Charlotte Duck

The Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot gets our vote as the best travel cot of all those we tested.

Charlotte Clarke and her 20-month-old daughter Adelaide tested out the Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot to see if it deserves its place in our buying guide.

Read on for our Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot review to see if this is the best travel cot for you and your baby.

The Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot has been cleverly designed so that it’s also a playpen and co-sleeper with a newborn insert. It weighs just under 9kg so it's not the lightest cot to carry, although it does fit in the boot of a modest-sized car. ‘It wouldn’t be my first choice for a long-haul trip abroad but for an excursion to Grandma’s, this is the perfect travel cot,' said our tester Charlotte.

It’s sturdy and stylish, coming in a light grey colour, and, most importantly, it’s easy to assemble. ‘Anyone familiar with a classic travel cot will easily be able to put this up in 20 seconds flat,’ adds Charlotte. It offers a comfortable night’s sleep with a surprisingly soft and squashy mattress. ‘My daughter settled down and slept with no interruptions.’

The Joie Kubbie Sleep Travel Cot

  • VIEW NOW AT VERY | £99.99

Weight: 8.79kg | Age range: From birth until your child weighs 15kg

The Joie Kubbie Sleep is a standard travel cot when it comes to assembly, with a central foot that pushes the corners of the cot out. ‘Putting this up was super easy with buttons telling you where to press,’ says our tester Charlotte. ‘The only bit I was initially confused about was the poles that sit underneath the mattress.’ These need to be slipped into the pouches and then locked together. ‘It’s not the lightest cot I’ve seen but it is very sturdy and you’d feel confident putting your baby in there, whatever their age,’ said Charlotte.

The mattress can be used at two heights - lower down, which is suitable for older babies (to prevent them from climbing out) or when you are using it as a playpen, and with the newborn insert attached, which sits higher up on the frame. ‘The insert would have been brilliant for my daughter (and my back!) when she was younger, as it’s really simple to attach with a zip and saves you from bending to the floor to reach your child.’

Comfort and features

The Joie Kubbie Travel Cot has all manner of clever innovations built-in. ‘My current travel cot is eight years old and testing out the Kubbie Sleep made me realise that technology has really moved on in that time,’ says Charlotte.

As well as a newborn insert, it has a clever co-sleeping mode, whereby one side of the cot drops down a few centimetres and the cot can be attached to a bed with straps that are included. ‘We didn't test the co-sleeping element as I have a toddler but she slept well in this cot on a weekend away,’ adds Charlotte. ‘The mattress felt really spongy and soft – much more comfortable than the hard mattresses I’m used to with travel cots.’

Adelaide also made use of the playpen which has a zipped opening. ‘I liked that it doubles up as a playpen too, as it saves on space and means you can make use of it at home as well as when you are away. My only little criticism is that I think the zip should go right down to the base – there’s a panel of fabric that doesn’t zip down and I was worried she might trip or fall over this,’ said Charlotte.

Value for money

The Joie Kubbie Sleep comes with a price tag of just under £100, making it an affordable, mid-range travel cot. ‘I think this offers amazing value for money,’ says Charlotte. ‘Not only are you getting three products for the price of one, but the Kubbie Sleep feels really well made and has clearly been carefully thought out in terms of design and functionality.

It's ideal for parents who co-sleep with their babies at home and who want to continue doing so on holiday or away from home overnight.

Our Consumer Editor, Heidi Scrimgeour, says: 'Based on our parent reviews of all the travel cots on our shortlist, we named the Joie Kubbie Sleep our best travel cot overall because it's so affordable yet the multifunctional design means you get lots of extra value from it. We also rate the quality of the fabric and materials used. And the overall design and multi-functionality as a co-sleeper and playpen mean this bit of kit gives more expensive premium travel cots a serious run for their money.'

Joie Baby Kubbie Sleep review

Joie Baby Kubbie Sleep

The Joie Baby Kubbie Sleep is designed to keep your little one comfortable for a good night's sleep and close to you in the night. You can also lower one of the sides to reach them in the night.

We spoke to these real mum testers to get their review...

How did this product make your life easier?

Heidi Gately says: "I loved the idea of being able to use it as a playpen when away in a hotel. It is great to be able to get ready without worrying if my baby has his hands in sockets or wriggled under the bed! The mesh sides meant he didn’t feel as trapped because he could see me whilst he played. This aspect was the best part of the crib for an older baby."

Lucy Gumise says: "It’s a stylish compact design which is brilliant having the drop sides- great as a breastfeeding mum although not completely flush to my bed it worked well for us The cot feels sturdy and robust, the mesh sides are great for keeping an eye on baby and vice versa and the colour is neutral and in fashion currently."

Sophie Leadbeater says: "I love how compact and light the travel cot is. It's super easy to pack away and put up. It took me only a few a minutes to put it up the first time I used it and I only had to glance over the instructions to be able to do it. It has great features like being able to pull the side down to check on your little one whilst they are asleep and the two levels for a newborn baby and for an older baby who can sit up or stand."

Would you recommend this product to other parents?

Christy McKenzie says: "I'd recommend this product to a fellow mum if it was their first travel cot purchase. If bought when your little one was tiny you'd get the full benefit of the bassinet depth and, later, full depth and potentially get a lot of use out of it. - Overall the quality of the product is lovely - as nice as I've seen - It feels like it would be the only travel cot you'd need in their first year. - The styling is very smart and the fabric feels high quality and luxe yet practical - The build quality is top notch and the fold and erect mechanism easy to operate - The packed cot is as small as you could expect - The mesh sides are generous, sturdy not flimsy and offer good all round visibility."

Victoria Rowat says: "The small size of this cot is a massive pro as it would fit next to most beds, even in a hotel, and the raised newborn aspect is so nice. The cot also has the option of removing the newborn raised platform and the baby can then be put down to the bottom, super useful for when they can stand and climb. The box says it is from birth to 15kg. However, my 15 month old son is 12kg and he is too big for it. He has no space to move around at all. So if I were to recommend this product, I would also want to point out that it’s usefulness declines rapidly as the baby grows; Perfect for 0-6 months, then you’d need a new travel cot."

Heidi Gately says: "I would recommend this crib over others mainly due to it’s size and raised newborn platform. Most other travel cots on the market are large and the baby is essentially lying on a caged mat on the floor. This raised newborn platform allows the baby to be next to you and at your level which is so important in those early days. The small size also means that it can be put next to mum in most situations. However such advantage becomes disadvantage as the baby grows. There is a very limited lifespan to this product and the compact size means that the baby grows out of it very quickly! By the time you’re ready to remove the newborn platform, I expect your baby will be close to growing out of the cot anyway!"

Would you choose this product above all others on the market?

Lucy Gumise says: "I personally would choose one that sits flusher to my bed side so I didn’t actually have to get up to feed my baby - especially when at newborn stage I’d also look for one with a comfier looking mattress as the mattress/mat supplied feels thin - my baby is big so I’m unsure just how comfortable it would be to use frequently - odd mattress size it was so hard to find a suitable sheet !"

Sophie Leadbeater says: "It's the smallest travel cot when folded away that I have seen, and I have used a few! it feels strong and sturdy so you can feel confident that your baby is safe and cosy. I loved the side material so you can see through but it also wasn't too transparent that your baby could be distracted to go to sleep. I also loved the pull down side so you can check on them easily or feed them without lifting them over the top."

Christy McKenzie says: "I love a lot about this travel cot but for me personally it doesn't warrant Best Cot Crib or Moses Basket - The build quality suggests to me more than an occasional cot, but it feels more 'travel' than being THE bedside bassinet you'd use as your 0-6month option for when little one is still sharing your room. So I'm a little confused on where this product is aiming. - To get max value for money you'd be someone who travels with it frequently - not keep it under the grandparent's spare bed for the odd visit - which may not be everyone - The specs say suitable for up to 15kg but I feels it's definitely too small for this, unless your baby is a very immobile sleeper. My 10kg little one already moves far too much for this to be the travel cot of choice for us for anything other than the odd night. - The lowering cot side didn't hit the mark for me, being hard to operate and not sliding far enough down."

What changes would you make to this product?

Victoria Rowat says: "The carry handle can only be used when the zip of the travel bag is not fully fastened since the carry handle is actually located on the underside of the mattress, the bag itself has no straps. A shoulder strap would have been very useful, since this is not a lightweight product. The wheels seem incredibly useless. They can’t be used when it’s folded up, and when it’s erected, it has to be practically 90 degrees before the wheels will roll. I’m not really sure what the point of them is! There is a zip on one side of the mesh. My son loved this escape route. I did not."

Heidi Gately says: "The main disadvantage was the weight of the thing, it was not an easy item to transport! The carry bag didn’t have any straps so it was a bulky and heavy piece of baby paraphernalia! If a rucksack style travel bag was available for it, I would definitely have to buy one to go with it. Also there we straps and poles that had no specific place to put them other than in the top of the bag. I feel sure that I would lose these very easily and the newborn platform is very dependant on the addition of these poles"

Lucy Gumise says: "The mattress - it’s thin and there are support rods underneath that I’m sure baby may feel although he did stay asleep all night In the cot- dropping the side seems to tilt this too so I’d want that design element Reviewing if I had a choice myself. Other than that I do like the Kubbie a lot for it’s price point."

First off, the Commuter is a great size. It easily held the seven-month-old who tested it; our tester even said she would have used the Commuter as her standard cot because of how convenient it was. This would have the added advantage of getting your baby used to the cot, so if you're also looking for a standard solution, this might be something to consider.

The changing table was a big hit with our tester’s baby, who was happy to lie back and looked very comfortable. Attaching the changing table is easy, as Joie’s CustomClick attachers mean it simply clicks into place.

The bassinet uses this system too, so all you have to do is clip it onto the frame and put the mattress in. After testing a number of complicated set-ups, it was a relief to find something so straightforward.

The cot itself unfolds by raising the arms until they click, then pushing down in the centre to make it flat. Once up, the cot looks really smart, and we loved the contrast of the pale grey netting with white top rail.

To collapse, there are plastic buttons on the side, making folding quick and easy. Overall we were impressed with the fold; although not groundbreaking, it does what it sets out to do very effectively.

There are several designs to choose from with the Commuter, but all of them look smart and efficient, which is always a good look on something for a baby.

Day-to-day use

The one downside of the Commuter is that the attachments don't fit into the bag that it comes with. If you want to travel with everything, you’ll have to drag it all with you, changer, bassinet and all.

If you use public transport to get around, this would be a real problem, and we’d recommend looking at some more compact options like the Little Life Arc 2 . If you have a car, the Commuter is pretty manageable. If you're planning to leave it at the grandparents’? Ideal.

The Commuter is also fab once your child can sit up – in some ways it's even more convenient, as you don’t have to carry the bassinet around separately. It's great as a playpen, and its larger size gives your child lots of room to crawl, roll over, or throw things (no judgement!).

Manoeuvrability

The Commuter has wheels for easy moving once assembled, a cool feature which we found especially nice on sunny days – depending on your access, you can even wheel the cot out into the garden, although if you want a sun shade or an insect net you'll have to buy them separately (Joie doesn't do its own, but a universal net from Amazon costs around £8 ).

Final verdict?

Overall, we think you'd be hard-pressed to find a travel cot that offers as much as the Commuter Change. Despite its slightly unwieldy method of transport, this cot does everything you could ask for, and its size means it will last for years.
