South African National Museum of Military History

Exactly as its title states, the South African Museum of Military History traces the story of all the country's military conflicts. Highlights here include the World War II fighter planes and bombers, as well as exhibits of tanks, ammunition, arms, and medals.

Particularly interesting is the exhibit on medicine at war, which details the Zulu's use of traditional healing during the Anglo-Zulu war, as well as modern day treatments used on the battlefield. Another exhibit unveils life in the trenches during World War I.

Opened in 2012, this impressive museum hosts a superb collection of African art with many works from South Africa as well as West and Central Africa. The museum is part of the Wits University Cultural Precinct in the trendy area of Braamfontein , which buzzes with students and university professors. Frequent temporary exhibitions infuse a freshness to the exhibits in this modern, light-filled space.

Johannesburg – South Africa’s biggest city and commercial epicentre. Also known as Jozi, Joburg, or Egoli (City of Gold in Zulu), it began as a gold-mining settlement in the 19 th century.

There is more to this cosmopolitan city than shopping. If you are visiting Johannesburg, or just looking for things to do in the city, here is a list of family-friendly things to do in greater Johannesburg and the surrounding area. However even if you don’t have kids with you, you will still enjoy most of them. I have written about several of these places before – individually - but as lists are more concise and easier to access, I have compiled them below.

The hop-on hop-off bus is a great way to see the highlights of Johannesburg if you are visiting the city for the first time. However, even if you have stayed here all your life, you can see Joburg from a different perspective and learn things about the city you never knew. The bus will take you to the main attractions in Johannesburg included many of those listed here. It also has a Soweto extension , which I would highly recommend.

2. Liberate your inner child at Gold Reef City

A visit to Gold Reef City is one of the most fun things to do in Johannesburg. South Africa’s only theme park, it is located on an old gold mine and has over 30 rides catering for different age groups. You can also watch a 4D show, visit an underground mine, witness a gold pouring demonstration and much more.

3. Experiment with science at Sci-Bono

Sci-Bono is an interactive science centre where scientific concepts are explained with colourful and interactive gadgets, devices and experiments. Kids are encouraged to experiment to their heart’s content. Special exhibitions are often hosted at the museum.

4. Revel in nature at Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens

8. See Nelson Mandela's old house in Vilakazi Street, Soweto

Mandela House

Soweto is the biggest township in Johannesburg and Vilakazi Street is the only street in the world to have produced two Nobel Prize winners—Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. It is also where 13-year-old Hector Pieterson was shot dead, sparking the riots on 16 June 1976.

No 8115 Vilakazi Street in Soweto is one of the most important Mandela sites in South Africa . It was the house of Nelson and Winnie Mandela from 1946 until the 1990’s. The house is now a museum containing memorabilia belonging to the Mandela family. There are several other interesting places to visit in Soweto too, like the Hector Pietersen Museum.

9. Get your adrenalin pumping at Soweto Towers

Originally the cooling towers of a decommissioned coal-fired power station, the Soweto Towers are now an extreme sports adventure site. Attractions include the world’s first bungee jump between two cooling towers and the world’s highest Suspended Catch Air Device (SCAD) Freefall.

10. Experience the township vibe at the historic Alexandra Township

11. Visit a former prison at Constitution Hill

Constitution Hill is a former prison and military fort where world-renowned heroes including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi were imprisoned.

Although I am not a fan of animals in captivity, not everyone can afford to go on a safari . And zoos have some educational value, especially for children, as long as the animals are taken care of well. The Johannesburg Zoo is a fun and educational outing, especially with younger children.

Hiking may not be something one would expect in a busy city but Johannesburg does have one of the biggest man-made forests in the world. There are several reserves where one can hike in and around Johannesburg like Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, Cradle Moon Lakeside Game Lodge and Modderfontein Nature Reserve, which have natural springs, dams, grassland and hills. Most of these reserves also have wildlife so you can do some game-viewing while you hike.

14. Go on a boat ride at Zoo Lake

This is a popular picnic and recreation area surrounding a lake. You can row boats and feed the ducks. There are on-site restaurants and kids' playgrounds too.

15. Have a picnic at Johannesburg Botanical Gardens and Emmarentia Dam

These sprawling gardens border the Emmarentia Dam. Among its features are a rose garden, a Shakespeare-inspired garden and a Huguenot memorial. You can rent canoes, watch the ducks and have a picnic.

Acrobranch is a must for adrenalin junkies. Set in the James and Ethel Gray Park in Melrose, it is an aerial adventure consisting of zip lines, tightropes, ladders, swing bridges and other obstacles which take you from tree to tree. Honeydew Mazes is a great place for a family, friends, or teambuilding outing. They have a giant elemental maze made out of reeds and smaller mazes for young kids. In summer, they also have a maize maze. Teams are given a clipboard with riddles, which they have to answer by going through the maze and finding the randomly placed clues, as well as completing the tasks in the pretty secret gardens.

The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage site, located about 50 km (30 miles) from Jo’burg.

This was where the oldest hominid fossils that have ever been found were discovered, some dating as far back as 3.5 million years.

Venture underground to see the remarkable stalactite and stalagmite formations in the Sterkfontein Caves. You’ll get to step into these ancient caves where about 30% of existing early human fossils have been discovered.

There’s a fascinating world hidden beneath the surface. Learn about the significant archaeological discoveries made in this underground wonderland.

4. Bicycle the Cradle of Humankind Landscapes

Along with the fascinating historical finds, this area has some excellent mountain bike trails and road cycling tracks.

Dedicated bike lanes on the tarred roads into the area make the roads safe for cyclists. The Cradle itself is very cyclist friendly, too, and well-signed.

5. Gold Reef City :

Enjoy a day filled with excitement, entertainment, and a glimpse into Johannesburg’s gold mining history. And learn why Johannesburg is called the “City of Gold.”

See a different aspect of Johannesburg’s history with a visit to this impressive gold rush-themed amusement park. Gold Reef City was built on the site of a real gold mine that closed in 1971.

Along with experiencing the roller coasters and trying your luck at casino games, stop at the gold mining museum. See gold threading through rock, and learn how gold is processed.

6. Johannesburg Botanical Garden :

Covering a full 81 hectares, the botanical gardens are full of activity and flora. Take a leisurely stroll through the garden and admire the different special gardens as well as the main arboretum.

The gardens often host special events like kiting competitions and seasonal concerts. Other favourite activities include boating and canoeing on the large pond formed by the Emmarentia Dam.

Find a peaceful spot to sit, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you. This is a n ideal spot to relax during a busy trip.

7. Constitution Hill :

Constitution Hill is a former prison complex that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past. Today it’s a museum, and home to the country’s Constitutional Court.

Some well-known people have been imprisoned at Constitution Hill. These include Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Albertina Sisulu.

The site is a very powerful reminder of the struggle for freedom and democracy in South Africa.

Constitution Hill is located in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, and is another UNESCO World Heritage Site.

8. Montecasino :

Affectionately known as Monte, the casino was designed to resemble an ancient village in the Tuscany region of Italy. You can find it in Fourways, Sandton in northern Johannesburg.

Not just a casino, the venue can be a whole vacation in itself. It contains hotels, movie theatres, restaurants, shopping, and a lot more.

Or you can just enjoy a night of entertainment at Montecasino. Try your luck at the casino, catch a live show or musical performance, and indulge in a variety of dining options.

It also features a ton of family and children’s activities, as well as the childcare facility Bambini Crèche. Let the kids have fun while you spin the wheel in the casino.

11. Market Theater :

Feel a part of the vibrant arts scene at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre, located in the free-spirited area of Newton. This renowned performing arts complex was founded in 1976, during the apartheid era.

12. Origins Center Museum :

The museum, located on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand, tells the story of the evolution of humankind.

Here you’ll find a collection of fossils, artifacts, and interactive exhibits that explore the history of our evolution. The displays are fascinating, and take you on an engrossing journey through human evolutionary history.

The Origins Center exhibits are well-designed and super-informative, and they offer a fascinating glimpse into our collective past. The center also offers several educational programs and workshops.

This is the place to gain a deeper understanding of our shared human heritage.

13. Melville Koppies Nature Reserve :

This reserve is an urban oasis, perfect for a short and memorable hike in Johannesburg. The reserve is located in the suburb of Melville, and it’s easily accessible by public transport.

The Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is home to a variety of indigenous plants and wildlife. A few of the animals you could see include bushbuck, mongoose, and dassies.

There are a number of hiking trails to choose from, ranging from easy to challenging. There are also several idyllic picnic spots, so bring lunch!

You’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the city skyline from atop the koppies (hills) throughout the reserve.

14. Sci-Bono Discovery Center :

This Discovery Center is a science and technology museum. It really does have something to interest people of every age. It offers a variety of interactive exhibits that explore different scientific concepts on an every-man level.

You can take part in hands-on activities and displays. There are exhibits on everything from the human body to the solar system. You’ll be able to participate in hands-on activities like building a robot or coding games.

There’s also a planetarium in the center. This is a favourite of mine, as I love to see the differences between the southern hemisphere sky and the northern one that I grew up with!

15. Hector Pieterson Museum :

The Hector Pieterson Museum is located in Soweto, South Africa, and commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising.

The museum is located two blocks away from where Zolile Hector Pieterson was shot and killed by police. Hector was a 12-year-old South African schoolboy who was protesting during the uprising.

It tells the story of the uprising and its impact on South Africa. It also gives you the chance to learn about the pivotal role of youth in the struggle against apartheid.

The many exhibits include photographs, personal accounts, and films. There is also a memorial to Hector Pieterson and the other children who died in the uprising – at least 176.

The Hector Pieterson Museum is a powerful reminder of the fight for freedom and democracy in South Africa. It is a must for anyone interested in South African history and culture.

16. Maboneng Precinct :

For a more light-hearted experience, immerse yourself in the energetic Maboneng Precinct!

The name Maboneng means “place of light” in the local Sotho language, and it is a fitting name for this dynamic district. Maboneng is home to a number of art galleries, restaurants, bars, and shops.

There are also a lot of creative spaces in Maboneng, such as artist studios, co-working spaces, and performance venues.

Maboneng Precinct is the place to visit if you’re looking for a unique and interesting experience in Johannesburg. Everyone is bound to find something they love in Maboneng, from art lovers to foodies to night owls.

Be sure to take a daytime walk through the area. Maboneng is a great place to wander around and explore the alleyways. You’ll find hidden gems, like art installations and murals.

Experience the eclectic blend of street art, cultural events, and hip hangout spots. They combine to make this neighbourhood a hub of creativity and urban cool.

A great time to go is on Sundays from 10am – 3pm, for Market on Main. This urban neighbourhood market has regional food, a variety of vendors, and local clothing, with a background of live music. And it’s free!

17. Johannesburg Art Gallery :

The JAG is located in the heart of Johannesburg, and is host to an impressive collection of South African and international art.

The gallery was founded in 1915, and it has since become one of the most important art galleries in South Africa. The collection includes over 9,000 works of art, from the 17th century all the way to the present day.

The JAG is an outstanding place to see a variety of art, from traditional African to modern and contemporary. The gallery also hosts several special exhibitions throughout the year.

You’re sure to appreciate the diverse collection of local and international artwork at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

18. Bungee Jump or Zipline at Orlando Towers

Orlando Towers is a decommissioned power station in Soweto, South Africa. It has been converted into a vertical adventure facility and its paint job makes it hard to miss!

If you’re feeling fearless, you can bungee jump or zipline from the top of the 100-meter-tall towers. Bungee jumping is an exceptional way to experience the adrenaline rush of free-falling.

After being strapped to a bungee cord, you’ll plunge off the edge of the tower. The free-fall lasts for a few seconds, and then you will be gently swung back up to the tower.

Ziplining is another great way to experience the thrill of heights. You will be attached to a zipline and then zing through the air between the two towers.

The zipline ride lasts for about a minute, and it is a great way to see the sights of Soweto from a different perspective.

Or if you’d rather not, you can still have fun with other activities at Orlando Towers. Try scaling the climbing wall or work on your aim on the paintball course.

19. James Hall Museum of Transport :

Take a nostalgic journey through transportation history at the James Hall Museum of Transport. Located at Pioneer’s Park in Johannesburg’s La Rochelle, it’s home to a large collection of vehicles.

On display is everything from horse-drawn carriages and bicycles to modern cars and buses. There are even a few steam-powered vehicles for you to see.

The museum was founded in 1964 by Jimmie Hall, a local businessman who was passionate about transportation history. It has since grown to become the largest transport museum in Africa with over 300 vehicles on display.

The exhibits are arranged chronologically. They start with the earliest forms of transportation and end with the most modern vehicles.

There are also a number of interactive exhibits where you can learn about how vehicles work and how they have evolved over time.

This is one of the favourite things to do in Johannesburg for visitors who are interested in the history of transportation!

20. Soweto Bicycle Tour :

Soweto is an acronym, and comes from so uth we stern to wnships. It borders Johannesburg on its southwest side, naturally.

It was to this area that black people were removed when whites-only residential areas were established in Johannesburg.

It’s still a city divided. There is a vibrant affluent part of Soweto, and guided bicycle tours are led here by knowledgeable locals. You’ll hear stories of its rich history and culture that make the area come alive.

You can pedal through the buzzing streets, visit historic landmarks, and interact with the warm and welcoming community.

There is also the poor area of Soweto, where little change has been seen. The night and day difference in a single township is startling.

But wherever you go in Soweto, it’s the lovely, friendly people you’ll remember the most.

21. Pilanesberg

Last but not least, I highly recommend a safari at Pilanesberg National Park . It’s a bit of a drive, located about 160 km (100 miles) from Johannesburg.

But it’s so worth it – and one of my favourite thing to do in Johannesburg. A great plus – the park is considered to be malaria-free!

The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife , including the Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes. You could also see giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and many more iconic African animals.

There are all sorts of activities to enjoy when visiting Pilanesberg National Park. Game drives, bush walks, and bird watching are just a few.

I think that game drives are the best way to see the wildlife in the park. They’re conducted in open-top or open-sided vehicles, so you can get a great view of the animals and landscapes.

Bushwalks are another terrific way to see the wildlife and to learn about the local plants and trees. Bush walks are led by experienced guides who can help you identify the different plants and animal tracks.

They’ll also make sure you stay safe.

Even apart from the epic animal sightings, Pilanesberg is home to over 360 species of birds . There are a number of hides in the park where you can sit and watch the birds without disturbing them.

At the end of the day, you’ll most likely enjoy a sundowner. This is a South African tradition of sipping a decadent cocktail at sunset . It’s a great way to end a day in the bush.

There are also several lodges and camps in the park, so you can stay overnight and experience the bush in a more up-close and personal way. Trust me, you’ll never want to leave.

22. Nirox Sculpture Garden

This art installation is about 45 km (28 miles) from the city centre, but this too is very worth the trip. You’ll find it in the Cradle of Humankind site on Highway R540, a few minutes’ drive from the Maropeng Visitors Centre.

The setting is stunning – a lush green formal garden , with a different sculpture around every corner. The park features a collection of over 100 sculptures by both South African and international artists.

The sculptures are placed throughout the park’s rolling hills, forests, and waterways. They create a unique and immersive experience for visitors.

Each sculpture is unique; some are constructed of stone, others from acrylic. Some are colourful, others are not. I highly recommend this exhibit .

Nirox Sculpture park also offers a variety of other attractions, including a covered exhibition space, a restaurant, and a variety of educational programs.

The park is only open on weekends and public holidays when no special events, such as concerts, are scheduled. You can visit between the hours of 10am and 4pm

You may not recognize his name, but you may know of him. He captured the attention of the world and thereby highlighted the injustice of apartheid when his critically injured body was carried after he was shot. The Hector Pieterson Museum is two blocks from where he was shot and killed on 16 June 1976. (The Nelson Mandela Museum is nearby).

Hiking Trails in Johannesburg

Hennop Hiking Trail

A popular trail in the Gauteng area is the Hennop Hiking Trail, It is a two day hiking trail that can be started from either the Zebra Trail or the Krokodliberg Trail.

The trail itself passes the Hartbeespoort Dam, a busy watering hole for the indigenous wildlife, then meanders through the mountain.

Sugarbush Hiking Trail

If two days spent in the mountain is not your cup of tea there are day hike alternatives not too far from JHB city centre. The Sugarbush Trail is one of those. It is a 9km relatively easy walk that runs along the escarpment of the West Rand.

The land itself is protected by the Cradle Of Human Kind World Heritage and runs through both reserve and private land. The summit will find you at the top of the Magaliesburg mountains.

Starting point: Robert Broom Drive

Tips: The trail isn’t very shaded so be sure to have protection from the sun. A great family hike but keep a watchful eye on your children as the land was previously used for mining.

Often overlooked in favor of other more picturesque parts of South Africa, Johannesburg is often just a stopover for international tourists, being home to O.R. Tambo International Airport, the busiest airport on the African continent. Often the jumping-off point for a safari and mostly enjoyed on a quick layover, Johannesburg is a city of contrasts. On one hand, there’s the poverty and struggles of Soweto, and on the other, there are the glitzy skyscrapers and “super homes” of Sandton, which is often referred to as Africa’s richest square mile. Despite its complicated past, the City of Gold has a lot to offer tourists.

1. The City Center

A great way to start your Johannesburg experience is by heading into the city center, which is full of historic buildings. The city’s reputation can make it a bit intimidating for solo travel, so a good option for getting a feel for South Africa’s biggest and richest city is by joining the safety and security of a guided walking tour . Visit Chancellor House, where Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo set up South Africa’s first black-owned law firm. Get a 360-degree view of Johannesburg from the Carlton Centre, a 50-story skyscraper located in central Johannesburg. Admire heritage buildings on historic Main Street. Visit the Workers Museum and Museum Africa. Get a feel for the hustle and bustle of the people, lifestyle, and culture of this complex city.

2. Constitution Hill

If you’re visiting South Africa, spend some time learning about apartheid — a brutal period of national segregation that lasted 43 years. A visit to Constitution Hill will give you a better understanding of this troubled era.

Constitution Hill was once a notorious complex of prisons, known as “The Fort,” where political activists and ordinary citizens alike were incarcerated throughout the apartheid era. Thousands of men and women — of all races, ages, social statuses, and political beliefs, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi — were imprisoned and tortured here.

Constitution Hill overlooks the city and has been transformed into beautiful, thought-provoking museums focussing on the promotion of human rights. Some interesting exhibits include Number Four Museum (once male prisoner cells), the Old Fort Museum (where the whites-only prison was located), and the Women’s Gaol Museum. You’ll also have the opportunity to enter the still-functioning High Court, if no proceedings are in progress.

3. The Apartheid Museum

The Apartheid Museum will give you glimpses of apartheid, the laws of segregation according to racial groups, and South Africa’s painful journey to freedom.

On arrival, you’ll receive an entry ticket that will randomly classify you as white or non-white and you may only enter through the gate indicated for the race you have been allocated. That’s just to give you a taste of the reality of the past and set the atmosphere for the rest of your visit.

There are two main exhibitions in the Apartheid Museum , The Permanent Exhibition and The Mandela Exhibition, as well as rotating temporary exhibits that explore different aspects of the issue more in depth. The permanent exhibition takes you through some of the painful events of South Africa’s struggle for liberation. The Mandela Exhibition gives you an opportunity to learn about the leading statesman who was at the forefront of the country’s struggle against apartheid, including his time as a prisoner for 27 years.

About 12 miles from Jo’burg center, Soweto is the largest township in South Africa with around 1.3 million inhabitants. During the apartheid regime, Soweto was at the heart of the movement to end apartheid and was a no-go area for tourists. More recently, the South African government has focussed on developing tourism in Soweto, making it a safe, dynamic, and interesting place to visit with some wonderful historical areas to explore, as well as an up-and-coming adventure sports scene.

Apartheid Museum Apartheid Museum

For a thorough understanding of South Africa's appalling apartheid era, a visit to Johannesburg's Apartheid Museum is a must. The museum features a series of graphic yet informative exhibits, including an array of hanging nooses that represent the execution of 131 government opponents and a series of televisions that show footage of anti-apartheid residents being attacked and killed. The museum also features several interactive exhibits, such as a room where visitors are invited to move a stone from the right to a pile on the left to show their commitment to fighting discrimination and racism. There's also two museum entrances – one for whites and one for nonwhites – to denote the physical separations once apparent during apartheid.

Although several recent travelers warned that you will feel emotional while making your way through this attraction, many agreed that the Apartheid Museum's heartbreaking atmosphere is necessary to help you truly understand what occurred during this period. And remember to take your time here. With so much information to digest, at least a few hours (if not a full day) is recommended.

Mandela House Mandela House

Constructed in 1945 in the Orlando West section of Soweto, Johannesburg, the Mandela House became the home for Nelson Mandela (also known as Madiba) and his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase in 1946. Although the pair divorced shortly after, Mandela continued to live in this quaint brick structure. His second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, eventually joined him here in 1948, and together the couple resided at the property with their two daughters. However, due to Mandela's prominence in the anti-apartheid movement, he was forced to leave his family to try to evade government authorities. As a result, Madiba would not return to his home until 1990 when he was released from prison following his arrest in 1962. But after a mere 11 days in the home, Mandela permanently left this Soweto property in favor of a larger, more secure home in Jozi's Houghton neighborhood, where he resided until his death in 2013.

After Madiba left his Soweto home, the property was converted into a museum, which now includes family belongings, honorary degrees and awards given to the former president, original kitchen appliances and furniture, and photographs of Mandela and his family. Although small in size, most visitors appreciate the insight this structure gives into South Africa's most famous politician. Another noteworthy feature: In the home's exterior, bullet holes and fire damage left from petrol bombs used during police raids are still visible.

Constitution Hill Constitution Hill

Located in the city's Braampark neighborhood, Constitution Hill provides travelers with a mix of old and new Jo'burg. For those looking for historic Jozi, there's the Women's Gaol, the Old Fort and Number Four, three former prisons that were used to separately house female, white and black political prisoners until 1987. Famous inmates of Number Four include Mohandas Gandhi and Robert Sobukwe, while the Women's Gaol once held prominent female activists like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Fatima Meer and Albertina Sisulu. And iconic anti-apartheid leader Nelson "Madiba" Mandela holds the distinction of being the Old Fort's only black prisoner, kept here because of his status and escape concerns.

Also within steps of the former prisons is the Constitutional Court. Known as South Africa's highest court (much like the United States' Supreme Court), the Constitutional Court was founded after apartheid ended in 1994 and continues to serve as the highest court in important legal and constitutional matters. The property also features several noteworthy elements, such as a low-lying window that allows people to look into the court from outside (which represents the court's transparency) and an eye-level judges podium decorated with different Nguni cowhides (indicative of the diversity of the bench and equality between judges and lawyers).

Although many of the shops are open during the week, Maboneng is best experienced on the weekend, most notably Sunday. That's when the neighborhood's popular Market on Main is held, which locals and tourists alike flock to for its array of international fare, live music and fun atmosphere. Another popular time to visit is on the first Thursday of every month — excluding January and April — when the area offers a night market, complete with live music and lots of food and crafts.

One of Jo'burg's most popular family attractions, the Montecasino Bird Gardens – which sits about 19 miles northwest of downtown – houses an array of brightly colored birds, reptiles and smaller mammals within a lush garden setting. In addition to strolling through the property's grounds, visitors can feed more than 60 species of birds in the aviary or enjoy a 30-minute bird show at the on-site amphitheater.

Overall, past travelers raved about the Montecasino Bird Gardens. In particular, many appreciated the park's friendly staff, reasonable entrance fee and entertaining bird show. To truly make the most of your visit, reviewers suggested buying some food at the ticket office to feed to the birds.

Whether you're a history buff, a military enthusiast or just want a place to cool off on a hot South African day, odds are you'll enjoy the South African National Museum of Military History. With an array of military exhibits that include everything from military vehicles and service medals to Anglo-Boer War paraphernalia and a small arms display, there's plenty to peruse. But the standout here is the museum's military aircraft collection, which features iconic planes like a Messerschmitt Me 262 fighter jet, a Blackburn Buccaneer S Mk 50 carrier-borne strike airplane and a de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito combat plane made mostly of wood.

In addition to its informative, attention-grabbing displays, travelers rave about the museum's friendly staff and well-maintained grounds. What's more, thanks to its kid-appropriate exhibits and proximity to the Johannesburg Zoo, the South African National Museum of Military History is a convenient attraction for visitors traveling with children.

Gold Reef City Gold Reef City

For a bit of heart-pounding fun, families cannot pass up an opportunity to explore Gold Reef City. Influenced by the region's prominent gold mining industry, this Jozi amusement park includes attractions like Tower of Terror (a former gold mine head converted into a freefall ride), Jozi Express (a rollercoaster with sweeping city views and several mine dump drop-offs) and Anaconda (a high-speed coaster ideal for adrenaline junkies). A kids section, multiple water rides and tamer experiences like gold panning and mine tours are also offered.

While some past visitors said the park is merely a wannabe Disney World , others argued Gold Reef City offers plenty of fun for adults and kids of all ages. Additionally, many of the food offerings receive high praise. But if you aren't a fan of long wait times for rides, avoid the park during the holidays. Instead, consider visiting during the offseason on a Wednesday or Thursday when local students are in school.
