Put-in-Bay Tour Train – All Aboard For Island Fun!

Learn about Put-in-Bay with the Put-in-Bay Tour Train. This bright and modern tour train cruises throughout South Bass Island with a narrated tour and stops at several popular Put-in-Bay attractions along the way. The open-air tour train makes it easy to relax and take in some lake breezes and summer days on this one-hour-long guided island tour.

How To Board The Tour Train

First, you will purchase your tickets at the bus terminal at the corner of Toledo Avenue and Delaware. This is in the heart of downtown near DJ’s Ice Cream, making it easy to have a meal before departing at one of the many Put-in-Bay Restaurants . Nearby options include The Boathouse Bar and Grille , The Village Bakery , and Pasquale’s .

The train is led by a Jeep manufactured in nearby Toledo Ohio. The knowledgeable local driver will share their wealth of information thru a speaker system mounted in each car of the train. You will learn all about the history of Put-in-Bay as you pass by various points of interest. This is the perfect way for first-time island visitors to learn where everything is!

Scheduled Stops

The tour train stops at several popular

attractions during the tour, including:

• Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center • Heineman’s Winery • Perry’s Victory and International Peace Monument • Lake Erie Island Nature and Wildlife Area

It’s all about the journey, not the destination, or so they say. The tour train guide gives detailed information about Put-in-Bay’s important role in the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry and his small squadron of troops sailed from Put-in-Bay harbor to defeat the British troops during this battle.

This was a true turning point for the War of 1812. Prior to Perry’s victory, national morale was at an all-time low. Thanks to his and his troop’s bravery, the American people had hope again, and we went on to ultimately defeat the British.

Tour Train Guide Attractions

Heineman’s Winery is the oldest winery in Put-in-Bay. It is also the only island winery to practice “vine to wine” practices. This means they only sell wine they make using grapes in their vineyard. Purchase wine at their gift shop to enjoy with dinner after the tour. Heineman’s is unique in the fact that they were the only winery to survive Prohibition. This was due to the Crystal Cave on their property. Home of the largest geode in the world, the winery switched from winemaking to tour guides and rode out that pesky problem of Prohibition.

Put-in-Bay really is an ecological wonder. The Lake Erie Island Nature and Wildlife Area hosts a full schedule of special programs devoted to the natural beauty of this island. Topics include Tree Identification, Frog Pond Search, and Monarch Butterflies.

Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center contains so many fun things to do under one roof it is positively mind-boggling! From mini golf to a rock wall, it is easy to spend the whole day here. Make sure to visit Perry’s Cave, another indication of the fascinating landscape of the island.

Perry’s Victory and International Peace Monument is both a testament to peace between nations and a landmark for Put-in-Bay. This 352 feet Doric Column is the first thing people see while journeying to the island. Just one more thing that makes this island so special!

Rhode Island Train Rides: A Scenic Journey To Remember

logoad1.jpg

Last revised: December 14, 2023

By:  Adam Burns

Despite the state's size, there are Rhode Island scenic train rides open to the public which are not associated with Amtrak or the state's other commuter rail services.

Our country's smallest state, at only 1,212 square miles, enjoys a long and fascinating history with the iron horse due to its location within the heart of New England.

Railroading was born here when the Granite Railway opened for service in Massachusetts on October 7, 1826 according to  Trains Magazine  article, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," published in its January, 2007 issue.

Elsewhere in New England trains got their start in Maine in 1836, New Hampshire in 1835, Vermont in 1848, and Connecticut in 1838.

Rhode Island's history will be discussed in more detail below.   Today, you can ride the rails on the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad based in Newport.

Please note!   The guide here pertains only to Rhode Island scenic train rides and museums pertaining to vacation and tourism.  If you are interested in intercity/long distance rail travel please visit  Amtrak's website .

State Rail History

Rhode Island has always played a minor role within the national rail network.  In his book,  " The Routledge Historical Atlas Of The American Railroads , " author and historian John F. Stover notes its mileage peaked at just 211 in 1920.

-  It gained a mere 1 mile after 1880, a decade that witnessed the greatest railroad construction in American history.  Between 1880 and 1889, some 70,400 miles of new lines were completed. -

Despite this, the Ocean State's involvement was not completely irrelevant.  Following mergers and acquisitions during the 19th century it was served almost exclusively by one railroad; the New York, New Haven & Hartford.

This company's very busy New York-Boston main line, still used by Amtrak today, passed through Westerly, curved northward to the reach the state capital at Providence, and finally continued on to Attleboro, Massachusetts.

It also maintained several secondary lines throughout the state to reach such points as Pontiac, Bristol, Arkwright, Pascoag, and Slatersville.

The New Haven even boasted a secondary main line linking Providence with New Haven, running via Willimantic and Middletown, Connecticut.  This corridor was once known as the New York & New England, before its acquisition by the New Haven.

A complete corporate history of the New York, New Haven & Hartford (New Haven) would require many books. As Mike Schafer notes in, " More Classic American Railroads ," more than 200 railroads came together in creating the modern New Haven.

Its two primary components included the Hartford & New Haven (H&NH) and New York & New Haven.  The former was completed between its namesake towns in 1839 while the latter opened between Woodlawn in the Bronx (New York City) and New Haven in January,  1849.

Other noteworthy predecessors included the:

  • Shore Line Railway (New Haven-New London); New Haven, Middletown & Willimantic (New Haven-Willimantic)
  • New York & New England (a longtime New Haven competitor)
  • Central New England Railway ( while much of this system was abandoned during the first half of the 20 century, it provided the New Haven a very important western interchange at Maybrook, New York ); Old Colony Railroad ( This system comprised the entirety of its eastern network running across southern and eastern Massachusetts from Providence, Rhode Island to Boston, Fitchburg, Lowell, Newport, New Bedford, and Plymouth.  It also served Cape Cod. )
  •  New York, Providence & Boston

The NYP&B was better known as the "Stonington Line" ( a company in which the legendary Cornelius Vanderbilt once held the presidency, prior to his involvement with the New York City railroads that went on to form the modern New York Central ), which offered the New Haven access to Providence, Rhode Island.

According to  Trains Magazine's  article, " Great Railroading: State-By-State ," published in its January, 2007 the NYP&B opened its main line from Stonington, Connecticut to South Providence, Rhode Island on November 17, 1837.

Another of the state's early systems was the Boston & Providence, incorporated on June 21, 1831 and chartered the following day.  Its goal was to link Boston with Providence, Rhode Island and the 41-mile line was completed on July 28, 1835.

Its keynote feature was the 615-foot, 70-foot tall Canton Viaduct in Canton, Massachusetts.

This stone-arch structure was the world's tallest and longest upon its completion in 1835.  Today, it remains in use by current owner Amtrak.  To read more about the  New Haven's history please click here .

  • Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad

Located in Newport, the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad (created in 2014 through the merger of the Newport Dinner Train and Old Colony & Newport Scenic Railway) offers excursions along a short stretch of track along the Narragansett Bay.

The trips are hosted on a pair of preserved and operational Rail Diesel Cars (RDC for short), which were manufactured by the Budd Company in the 1950's.

These self-propelled machines are streamlined in sleek stainless steel.  The group currently maintains two such units; BC-30 an RDC-3 built in 1956 for the Pacific Great Eastern of British Columbia, Canada and BC-15, built as RDC-1 #6102 for the Canadian National in 1957.

The former's interior layout includes a baggage area, kitchenette, and seating area while the latter features only coaches (Budd manufactured a number of RDC variants and equipped them with whatever interior configuration the buyer requested).

The trips include full service meals on-board while special events are hosted throughout the year.  There are also murder mysteries hosted.

  • Rhode Island Railroad Museum

Located in West Kingston, this museum is housed within the restored New York, Providence & Boston depot built in 1875.

It is maintained by the Friends of the Kingston Station, which formed in 1974 to preserve the building and prevent its demolition.

The group was eventually successful in stabilizing the structure and, working in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, secured $3.5 million dollar restore and modernize the building.

The project was completed in 1998.  Today, part of the depot is used by Amtrak as a station stop while the group utilizes another section as the Rhode Island Railroad Museum that features artifacts and displays related to the area's railroad history.

Unfortunately, there is no rolling stock to view and Rhode Island as a state is home to no preserved locomotives.

SteamLocomotive.com

Wes Barris's SteamLocomotive.com is simply the best web resource on the study of steam locomotives.

It is difficult to truly articulate just how much material can be found at this website.

It is quite staggering and a must visit!

Lovingly restored by the Barker Family, the Castle and surrounding grounds are at the heart of the Dunedin visitor experience. Arrive in time for refreshing high tea in the Ballroom Café followed by a guided garden tour.

Dunedin - Oamaru - Aoraki Mt Cook

Departing from Dunedin by rail, we continue to hug the coast towards Oamaru. We then detour inland by luxury coach via Omarama and Pukaki towards the spectacular Aoraki Mt Cook. Here, we find the home of the tallest mountain in New Zealand, which helped Sir Edmund Hillary to develop his climbing skills in preparation for the conquest of Mt Everest. Recognised as part of the Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage Area, the National Park is a breath-taking environment of glaciers, terminal lakes, turbulent rivers and Australasia’s tallest peak, the mighty Aoraki Mt Cook soaring above at 3,724 metres. Aoraki/Mt Cook - Geraldine - Christchurch

A morning departure from the hotel leaving Aoraki Mt Cook by coach, we journey back to the coast via Tekapo and Fairlie on the way to Christchurch. On arrival in Christchurch, explore modern day Antarctica at the International Antarctic Centre and experience a taste of this unique and breath-taking continent – just like the explorers before you.

Passengers will stay at The Commodore Hotel in Christchurch.

Christchurch - Kaikoura

“Where the mountains meet the sea”

Departing Christchurch on the Coastal Pacific Scenic Train, our destination is Kaikoura, home of resident whales, where the guardians of the seas – the mountains of the Southern Alps – rise majestically from the deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean. Several different species of whale can be seen off the coast of Kaikoura at different times of the year, and most of the time, the huge resident Sperm Whales can be sighted. The ocean trench just off the coast means sperm whales are often seen close to shore.

Passengers will stay at the newly opened Sudima Hotel (or equivalent) taking in spectacular views of the Kaikoura Esplanade.

Kaikoura - Marlborough

This morning we introduce you to a true “rockstar of rail” and a grand finale of epic proportions, as the train is then hauled under a full head of steam by the glorious Marlborough Flyer. It is “all aboard” and we continue to take in the spectacular coastal journey as we depart Kaikoura. Onwards north via the Dashwood Pass and Awatere Valley to Marlborough, the famous wine region boasting over 100 vineyards.

This historic WW1 memorial steam locomotive Ab608 Passchendaele, named in honour of our fallen soldiers at The Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Having hauled royal trains on two previous royal visits in the early 1900’s, this is a journey fit for a king.

Passengers to stay at the Picton Yacht Club (or equivalent), which is the premier hotel in Picton located on the stunning waterfront.

Marlborough - Wellington

On the final day of the tour, one of the most picturesque ferry crossings in the world awaits. We weave our way through the Queen Charlotte Sound and cruise across the Cook Strait to the harbour city of Wellington. Tour ends in Wellington.

There is the option for post-tour accommodation at the James Cook Grand Chancellor.

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk travel guide.

  • 1. Architecture
  • 2. Attractions
  • 3. Cultural life
  • 4. Souvenirs

Khabarovsk, Russia fascinates visitors with its unusual heritage and fabulous untouched nature. Tourists are drawn to the native culture, eclectic architecture and mesmerizing waters in this off-the-beaten-track destination, which promises a unique and memorable vacation.

As the center of Russia’s far eastern region of Khabarovsk Krai, the city offers celebrations throughout the year which are sure to give added flair to your trip, from traditional culture days to large-scale food fests. It is easy to keep a full itinerary during your stay thanks to its many theaters, museums, restaurants, workshops and quest rooms. Guests who want a more relaxed holiday can venture into the serenity of Khabarovsk nature, including the coast of the Sea of Japan or one of the region’s many picturesque lakes .

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

Taking the train in Ireland – what you need to know

Apr 19, 2024 • 11 min read

A train travels along the Rosslare, Wexford to Dublin line in Ireland © Irish Rail

Traveling by train is one of Ireland ’s great, if under-appreciated, pleasures.

It’s a small island and the rail network is limited, so no journey is especially long – but riding the rails across the country is one of the loveliest ways to enjoy the rolling countryside.

Compared to its European counterparts, Irish trains aren’t especially spectacular, but this is a country that doesn’t need high-speed or sleeper trains: you roll along at a maximum of 160km/h (99mph) and before you know it you’re on the other side of the island.

The particular nature of Irish demographics has shaped train travel in Ireland: with around a quarter of the population clustered in the greater Dublin region, it makes sense that most train journeys begin or end in the capital. In Northern Ireland the same is true of Belfast .

Irish trains might not be especially quick or super luxurious, but they’re an efficient and eco-friendly way of exploring the island – so long as your explorations are focused on the major cities and towns. Here is our essential guide to train travel in Ireland.

Overhead shot of trains on rails at a depot

The lowdown on rail travel in Ireland

Irish trains are efficient, relatively frequent and usually on time.  Irish Rail/Iarnród Éireann operates the entire network of trains in the Republic, from intercity trains linking the major urban centers to the busy commuter network that services the greater Dublin region.

There are two main lines into the west and three into the south and southwest; spurs off the main lines connect to a host of smaller towns throughout the country. There’s also a line to Belfast, from where  Translink services connect the city with the Antrim Coast and Derry (Londonderry) .

Within the greater Dublin region, a network of commuter services connects the capital with a host of suburbs and dormitory towns in the surrounding counties. Dublin’s coastline between the northside suburbs of Howth and Malahide, and Greystones in County Wicklow is served by DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transport) trains.

There are some notable gaps in the country’s rail network, with no services in counties Donegal , Monaghan and Cavan , and no trains into West Cork . Some towns – like Buttevant in Cork or Annacotty in Limerick – are on the rail line but they’re bypassed as they have no functioning station.

Ireland’s bigger train stations – including Cork , Limerick , Galway , Sligo, Belfast and the two in Dublin – are all pretty well stocked when it comes to picking up supplies and other assorted sundries for your journey. Most other stations will have a small shop.

A train crosses a viaduct below a dramatic cloudy sky

Train tickets are relatively good value

The good news about traveling by train in Ireland is that it is relatively inexpensive compared to train travel in some places, such as the UK, for example. If you buy it online, a standard one-way fare between Dublin Heuston and Kent Station in Cork costs €30–35, and around €55 in first class.

Online is the best place to buy your tickets for train travel in the Irish Republic. Not only do you get the best fares (with savings of up to 50% compared to buying the ticket at the station), but you can purchase your ticket up to 90 days in advance and reserve a seat when you do.

You have the option of collecting your bought ticket from a machine at the station as you’re boarding, or downloading a QR code at the point of purchase. If you wait to buy your ticket at the station, you’ll pay significantly more and have to get there early to queue up at the ticket kiosk.

For travel in Northern Ireland, you’re better off buying the ticket at the station as only a limited number of tickets are available online. Show up a short time before your intended departure time and just buy your ticket there.

Only a handful of services offer first class, but upgrading is relatively inexpensive. On average, expect to pay around €20–25 more to sit in first. There are three kinds of first class service on Irish trains. CityGold is on direct Dublin to Cork services, and includes an onboard host and a complimentary newspaper on selected early morning services. The Enterprise service between Dublin and Belfast offers the same, plus a fine breakfast. Premier Class is similar, but is only available on direct services between Dublin and Tralee and some Dublin to Cork trains.

A train runs through a village near the edge of the sea

Some discounts and offers apply

There are discounted fares for children and young adults aged between 19 and 25, as long as they have a valid discount card. Under fives and those aged 66 and over travel for free.

The commuter network in the Greater Dublin area has a fare cap of €6 for travel between the capital and a host of towns in the surrounding counties.

There are two rail passes aimed at visitors. The Trekker Four Day (€88) offers unlimited travel for adults on all Irish Rail services on four consecutive days from the date of issue. The Explorer (adult/child €128/64) provides five days of travel on all services in a 15-day window.

However, before investing in either, be sure that you plan on making the most out of it. The limited rail network means that connections are limited and traveling between some destinations involves backtracking: Cork and Waterford are both on the south coast, but to get from one to the other means travelling to Limerick, while Sligo and Westport are only 140km (87 miles) apart along the west coast, but to go between them by train you’ll have to travel through Dublin – which is on the other side of the country.

In Northern Ireland, the Sunday Fun Day Tracker ticket gives passengers unlimited train travel on a Sunday for £9 (£4.50 for children). Tickets are available from all ticket offices, the mLink ticketing app and from the conductor on the train.

A busy train platform in the evening

These are the busiest times to travel by train

Unsurprisingly, peak times for train travel coincide with busy rush hour periods. Early morning services to Dublin from cities including Cork, Galway and Limerick can be busy, especially if the train is due to arrive in Dublin around the start of the working day. Friday evening trains departing Dublin can also be quite busy. However, as online bookings also include the option of booking a seat, you’ll never have to stand.

The commuter network is busiest on weekdays from 7am to 9am and from 4:30pm to 6:30pm as thousands of people travel in and out of work. You can’t prebook seats on these services, so plenty of people do end up standing. Keep an eye out on changing schedules, especially for weekend and holiday travel, as frequencies diminish.

The train network is limited, but it has some benefits over road travel

There are no rail links to any Irish airport, which means you’re relying on taxis, private cars or buses once you arrive in the country. Irish ferry ports are better connected to rail lines, however, and you can catch trains in Rosslare, Dublin and Larne; there is no rail link to Belfast Port.

If you want to reach the more remote corners of the island, then the Irish rail network is quite limited, and a car will give you the flexibility you need. However, rental fees can be very expensive and fuel is another considerable cost, with the price of unleaded and diesel hovering between €1.75 and €2 a liter. Parking is also pricey in all urban centers, especially Dublin.

Traveling by bus is the cheapest way to get around, but it can be a slow business, as most make lots of stops along the way. There are some direct express services, but they are at the mercy of traffic, which can also add considerable time to a journey compared to traveling by train. Plus, buses don’t have bathrooms, with those traveling longer distances relying entirely on rest stops.

A train passes through autumnal countryside

On board facilities vary depending on the type of train

There are two kinds of Irish trains: InterCity and commuter. InterCity trains are all the same – relatively modern with comfortable seats in standard class and fancier recliners in first – and they travel at speeds of up to 160km/h (99mph). There’s no journey in Ireland that is longer than 2½ to 3 hours. Commuter trains are slightly older, with less comfortable seats; older trains are used on some small-distance spur lines in rural areas and are very basic (facilities include seats and a toilet).

While Ireland’s flagship service is the one between Dublin and Cork, the fanciest train is the Enterprise service between Dublin Connolly and Belfast Lanyon Place, which is a joint venture between Irish Rail and Translink. This train is on a par with most services you’ll find in mainland Europe and first class is the most luxurious of any in the country.

All InterCity trains have three-pin sockets at every row where you can plug in a charger or a laptop. Most commuter trains in the greater Dublin area also have sockets. All trains have toilets and there is a cross-network wi-fi service operated by Irish Rail, but it is patchy and inconsistent. Translink has its own wi-fi network, which is accessible on all bus and rail services in the north, but, like in the Republic, you’re at the mercy of signal strength and contention levels.

Food options are pretty limited. There is a trolley service on the Dublin to Cork service, while the Enterprise between Dublin and Belfast operates a full service menu in a dedicated dining car; first class passengers also get a pretty good breakfast as part of their ticket.

Some trains on the Dublin to Cork route have a “quiet carriage” (usually Carriage G, marked in purple when booking) where the use of phones is prohibited and passengers are encouraged to keep noise levels down.

You can bring a bike on any Irish Rail train for free, although there are some restrictions during busy periods (such as sporting fixtures and concerts). The Dublin to Cork line is the only one to have a dedicated bike storage area; all other InterCity trains have (very) limited bicycle spaces within the passenger compartment – it’s not unusual for only two bikes to be allowed into the compartment, so be sure to book in advance. Bikes are not allowed on commuter and DART services during peak hours – before 10am and from 3:30pm to 7pm Monday to Friday.

A train follows a scenic route by the sea

There are many scenic train routes: here are the best

No matter where you are in Ireland you’re going to find a beautiful landscape or two, but some journeys are worth keeping your eyes wide open for.

Dublin to Sligo

Once you’ve gone past the huge suburban sprawl of the greater Dublin area, the landscapes get quite gentle; beyond Mullingar the train skirts alongside the edge of beautiful Lough Owel. For the best views, sit on the left-hand side of the train.

Dublin to Belfast

The Enterprise service is the best in the country, with the most comfortable seats and the best food options – especially in first class. The train skirts alongside the Irish Sea between Malahide and Balbriggan, so be sure to sit on that side as you travel (on the right-hand side if you’re traveling to Belfast).

Derry (Londonderry) to Coleraine

The Translink service between Northern Ireland’s second city and Coleraine is a stunner, a 40-minute journey along the Causeway Coast that comes with beautiful beaches, huge cliffs and unimpeded views out over the North Sea.

Downpatrick to Inch Abbey

It’s only a 10-minute journey, but the trip from Downpatrick in County Down to the monastic ruins of Inch Abbey takes place in a vintage steam train (or a 1960s diesel train) that chugs its way along the line, over the River Quoile and past the drumlin-specked landscape.

Cork to Cobh

One of Ireland’s most scenic trips is the 25-minute trip from Cork City to the seaside town of Cobh , which takes you along the river (sit on the right for the best views), past marshy Harper’s Island and over the bridges on Lough Mahon and the Slatty Water. You can always stop off at Fota and visit the  wildlife park  there.

Book in advance for wheelchair access to trains

All InterCity services are nominally accessible, but if you do need assistance you will need to book it in advance so that suitable arrangements can be made. This usually means that a conductor will have a ramp ready for wheelchair access, but we have also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence of staff simply lifting a wheelchair onto a train, which depending on the individual can either be a help or an annoying hindrance. Whatever you do, make sure to communicate your requirements before you travel as assistance is not guaranteed otherwise.

For passengers with learning difficulties or any issue where there may be a challenge with communication (such as autism) Irish Rail staff are trained to recognize visual cue cards such as the  JAM card , which inform the interlocutor of the holder’s condition. JAM cards are available online or at mainline train stations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford and Sligo.
