JASON DEVORE - “The Road To Clarity" ALBUM REVIEW

jason devore authority zero

Jason Devore, frontman of the Arizona punk rock band Authority Zero has launched a run of Florida tour dates in support of his first solo record in 9 years, 'The Road To Clarity: Conviction Vol 3.'

Authority Zero was formed in 1994 and DeVore took on the role of the band's guitarist/lead singer. DeVore brings high energy and authentic rawness talent to every song and live show making him an ideal frontman. I recently chatted with Authority Zero when their last forthcoming album "Persona Non Grata" dropped in late 2018. You can check out that full interview HERE.

DeVore's first solo album, "Conviction Volume I: The Smoke House Sessions" came after writing a series of solo/acoustic demos and being approached by good friend Bryan Sandell with the tracks. In 2007, DeVore had approached Sandell once again with new songs and was eager to record his second solo album. With touring conflicts and busy scheduling the second album "Conviction Volume II The Crooked Path” wasn't released until 2010. Nearly 9 years later DeVore is back with his third installment “Conviction Volume III: The Road To Clarity” which is out now.

The Road To Clarity is beautifully hand-crafted love letter about life on the road, perseverance and at times, whiskey. The American country-punk rock album is reminiscent of bands like Lucero and Social Distortion, (mostly Mike Ness' solo music) with the familiar hints and grapplings of Authority Zero's AZ desert rawness.

Tunes like opening track I HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, CHOKE, and BLACK AND BLUE have an almost celtic punk melodic drone that make you want to drink alone all night singing along while tunes like title track THE ROAD TO CLARITY, WHISKEY AND ROSES and WHO'S SIDE ARE YOU ON are rooted in an acoustic outlaw country similar to the classics of Cash and Williams.

The Pier: Would you say one of the things you like about doing the solo stuff is it allows for a more intimate vibe between you and your listeners, both in the album format and, especially, when playing live? Devore: Definitely, and that’s what’s so cool about it. It’s raw and stripped down and we don’t do real big shows with the acoustic stuff. It’s more of a coffeehouse-type setting or a small club deal with the audience right there. So, I can actually interact with them without screaming at ‘em or yelling at an entire crowd. We kind of talk back and forth and it is a totally cool, different outlet.

The Pier: The lyrics on Crooked Path are very expressive. What were you trying to communicate with this album as far as the lyrical content? Devore: A lot of the songs are just stories. Like “Carefree Highway” is about when I was working my day job when I wasn’t touring with Authority and I’d drive all around the city for the job, like 130 miles each day. It had already caused my car to break down and I was borrowing a friend’s car when the same thing happened out by Carefree Highway in Phoenix. So, it was kind of a cheesy way for the title to come about, but I was stuck out there for five hours with my acoustic waiting for a tow truck. So, I actually wrote the song to kill time and it ended up being more of a life story, but it came from being broken down on the side of the road. So, it’s just about the cool timing, observing what’s going on around me and, I realized, I can use the written word to pair things in my life and to express those things in a more melodic way – it’s kind of hard to explain (laughs).

jason devore tour

The Pier: Tell me a little about the title track as far as what it’s about and how it shows where you are now as a musician, compared to five or so years ago with Conviction 1, The Smokehouse Sessions. Devore: The idea behind Crooked Path is my choosing to do music for more than half my life now, since the whole thing got started up back in the day with Authority, and all the ups and downs. It’s about the things a lot of people hope to do, and want to take the certain steps to do, but the reality is sometimes you can’t. You have to work, you can’t afford it, you have a family and all these different things, which are sometimes an obstacle to the aspirations you had as a kid. So, mine is just a different path than a lot of people would take. It’s a path with a lot of different lifestyle things involved with it, like all the traveling and being away from family . It’s just not the straight and narrow path. People are always telling others, “you need to go to college and you need to get this kind of job,” and I’ve done completely the opposite of all that. I’ve woven in and out of things and I’m still alive, able to follow my dreams and have a lot of crazy adventures along the way. The album kind of affirms how I’ve gone through this pretty cool leap of faith.

The Pier: So, you were just in Europe with Authority Zero, correct? Where did you guys go? Any memorable shows you can tell me about? Devore: Yea, we just did our first European and UK tour. We went to Belgium, France, Luxemburg and United Kingdom. It was insane and really cool. Obviously, some of the shows were a thin crowd because they didn’t know who we were. There were some shows with like 20 kids and we would play like there were 1,000, because hopefully next time they’ll bring 20 more kids. One of my favorite shows we played was the first one in Belgium. It was amazing. There were probably a couple hundred people and they just went freakin’ ape-shit — flyin’ all over the stage and on top on each other from start to finish. It was a really cool entry into the tour, but it also set the bar really high. Still, it’s really refreshing to go over and do shows out of your normal element, so you don’t feel like you’re just going in circles, playing for the same group of kids. And it just opens up the world a little bit and I think we’re headed back in July again to do a couple festivals.

The Pier: Anything else you would like to let fans know about? Perhaps what you’ll be up to in the coming months of twenty-eleven? Devore: I’ll be out supporting the new album and then I’m headed out in April with Authority for two weeks, touring with Unwritten Law, who also has a new album coming out. Then we might do another Canadian tour in May leading into June and, other than that, I’m just writing already for the new record and trying to get things in motion so it won’t be another three year period before getting out new music again.

There’s no way you’ve been into melodic punk rock, skate punk, or ska-punk and somehow missed Authority Zero . This legendary Mesa, Arizona melodic punk rock group goes strong for more than two and half decades, toured the world several times, and released countless full-lengths, EPs, and singles. Authority Zero is famous for tirelessly spreading the positive message even in these troubling times. The group recently released a brand new material called Ollie Ollie Oxen Free, so I sat with Jason DeVore and discussed this material, the recording process, the new guitar player, and all other cool stuff. Enjoy!

Hello, thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. How are you doing?

Jason: I’m doing well thank you for asking.

Your new album is called Ollie Ollie Oxen Free. Could you please elaborate on the name for those readers who’re not familiar with the phrase?

Jason: The album title stems for the old game “Come out come out wherever you are” and dates back with the actual title many many years. It seemed fitting with how congested, locked away, sacred, and separated the world has been over the past couple of years. It’s almost a cry out to everyone to hopefully feel something positive and safe to break out of the shells they’ve been trapped both in their actual houses and within themselves.

It is your eleventh full-length album, besides several singles and EPs. Lots of artists and musicians lose inspiration over the years, but your new album sounds fresh. What’s the key for the band to keep vital and relevant after decades of performing, recording, spending time on the road? Where do you get your inspiration for the new material?

Jason: We just simply love playing music and love your fans and family around the world. That in itself in extremely driving and inspiring. We try and keep it fun even as hard and grouling as it can get sometimes. There’s always going to be something to write about with life’s ups and downs and changes in life. This past year was certainly no different and if anything brought new inspiration trying to seek out the good in all the bad.

How you usually write compositions? Is there any proven formula for each recording, or you tend to experiment whenever you record new material?

Jason: Really we just start writing and whatever comes out domes out! We never really plan for any given song to turn out a certain way and that also helps to keep it motivating and fun for us. We just go for it and before we know it there is a completed song for the most part. Each typically starts out super simple and by the end has morphed into something totally different. Pretty cool how music works!

Your recordings almost always call out the crowd to stay positive, focused, and make the best of life as much as possible. Is it hard for you to keep things positive sometimes?

Jason: Oh absolutely. I’m only human as well so when times get tough I will lyrically end up writing to myself to help me get out of a funk. With that I’m always hopeful someone can also relate and that it can make them not feel alone.

Where are you getting your daily/weekly dosages of positivity? Could you share your secrets for a happier/healthier life?

Jason: I just try and stay focused but not take everything overly serious at the same time. That can cause a lot of unnecessary stress in your life which isn’t good for you nor the people around you. One day at a time and being thankful for all the good things in life rather than focusing and being eaten away and consumed by the bad.

Can you reveal some of the themes of your latest material? Are there any tunes you could already set as your favorite ones?

Jason: Thematically there seems to be an inner woven thread, although it was unintentional. It mostly ended up focused on the highs and lows of recent times as a human being and as a band in trying times. Some of my favorites are “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free”, “Fire Off Another” Seas and Serpents” and “Fully Operational”.

What are your favorite tunes to play live anyway? Also, what are your favorite works? Any particular Authority Zero album that stands out above the rest?

Jason: This album is really one of my favorites over the years. Not sure if that’s just because it’s fresh and new or because of the song writing itself. A combination of both I’m sure. Favorite live songs would probably be “A Passage In Time”, “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free”, and 12:34.

Cameron Webb produced your brand new album. How was it working with him?

Jason: man Cameron is just awesome. Great person and a killer producer. I call him the mad Scientist of production. Right when you think things are stagnant or moving in one direction, he’ll sudden break out and that’s when shit gets really cool haha. He’s just all around a killer and well rounded producer.

Eric Walsh is the latest addition to your band? How’s the new guy fitting in, and does his playing style differs from the old guitar player?

Jason: Eric fits RIGHT in. He’s an old friend of ours as well as touring buddy and he absolutely shreds. An amazing guitar player with an infectious positive attitude and personality. He brings it all to the table as far as guitarists go and we’re lucky to have him as part of the team. No real comparison between guitarists as everyone who has been in the group has brought something very unique throughout the years. In turn I suppose that would also be another thing that keeps us motivated and keeps things exciting, fun, and interesting.

You guys have a lot in common, and Walsh is not a complete stranger. Could you please tell me something more about it and how you decided to pick him as your new guitar player?

Jason: To myself, Mike, and Dalley, he was instantly a personality we thought would mesh well along with his playing abilities and diversity. This is the first time ever we’d actually promoted the band looking for a new guitarist so it was a bit out of my personal comfort zone. That to me always seemed to end up possibly shell shocking our fan base, although collectively we felt it best to take that road to find “the right guy” and see if we were somehow missing something that we’d not payed attention to with an outside talent. We had over 150+submissions from around the world which blew our minds and almost from the beginning to the final call to him it just felt natural and right. We all knew each other, had seen each’s work ethic and stage presence on the road, and all in all we were just stoked on him so it seemed like a no brainer.

Recording processes are always full of anecdotes, just like touring. Any funny stories you would like to share from these recording sessions?

Jason: The recording actually was done as a three piece before the entrance of Walsh to be the glue and forward motion as a four piece. Our bassist Mike Spero ended up doing (and writing) a good 3/4 of the end all guitars along with myself and Dalley on Drums. That in itself was funny but in a cool way as I had never done a Zero record like that so it was oddly exciting given our written content. Honestly aside from that it was just naturally fun and grinding it out. We all had a blast and it was super laid back and simple which I think helped shine through the record. I suppose me eating Pick Up Stix literally almost every day for lunch and leftovers for dinner would be my highlight besides recording with my buds lol.

You recently played some live shows? How was it for you to get back on the stage and play after a while?

Jason: It was very exciting. Was great seeing people out again and getting along so happily. Everyone was smiling ear to ear, singing along  like they hadn’t sang in years, and just loving life. The comradary of it all made me feel so full and grateful.

You also announced the North American tour, could you tell me something more about it? Any plans for touring Europe in the nearest future?

Jason: Yes and we’re stoked! We’ll be hitting the Weat Coast of North America in December and The East Coast and South in mid January. Huge talks of doing our European tour that has been on hold this coming Summer in 2020 so we’ll see how things roll. All around as with most bands, we are ecstatic to get back.

Here’s the last one. Any tunes/artists/bands/writers you could recommend to our readers? Anything that comes up to your mind at the moment.

Jason: I personally have been loving a lot of our friends bands new music that has been banging out. Some killer groups I would highly recommend to anyone reading is In The Whale, Counterpunch, Chaser, Fayuca, Rubedo, if looking for “new and upcoming bands with slayer new records out this year as well.

That’s it. Thank you so much for your time. Anything you would like to say to your fans and readers of this interview?

Jason: I and we love you. Words can’t show our gratitude foe your support. More to come!

Be the change you wish to see in the world

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

2024 Zurich Classic odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions by model that's nailed 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the zurich classic of new orleans 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks.

rory-mcilroy-pga-golf-getty-images.jpg

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay look to reclaim some team magic when they pair back up for the 2024 Zurich Classic. The PGA Tour's yearly team event tees off Thursday at TPC Louisiana in New Orleans, and 80 two-man teams will be in attendance for tee off on Thursday. Schauffele and Cantlay were the winning duo back in 2022 and they are the 5-1 favorites on the 2024 Zurich Classic odds board. Should you back this pair of California natives with your 2024 Zurich Classic picks? Or should you back Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry at 8-1 odds?

Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala are listed at 11-1 in the lastest 2024 Zurich Classic odds, and Collin Morkiawa and Kurt Kitayama follow at 16-1. Defending Zurich Classic champions Nick Hardy and David Riley are 80-1 longshots to have repeat success. Before making any 2024 Zurich Classic picks, be sure t o see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up more than $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, and the RBC Heritage this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Zurich Classic 2024 field is finalized, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Zurich Classic predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Zurich Classic 2024: McIlroy and Lowry, who've combined for 26 wins on the PGA Tour, barely crack the top five. McIlroy is set to play in his fourth consecutive event when he tees off at TPC Louisiana. He's failed to crack the top-10 in seven of his eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, while Lowry has finished T-19 or worse in six of his past eight events.

Both players have struggled mightily on the green this season. McIlroy enters the 2024 Zurich Classic ranked 78th in strokes gained: putting (0.119) and 72nd in putting average (1.758), a big reason why he ranks 98th in scoring average (70.44). Lowry, meanwhile, ranks 99th in strokes gained: putting (-0.012) and 143rd in putts per round (29.38), which doesn't bode well for their chances to finish on top of the leaderboard this week.

Another surprise: Rasmus Højgaard and Nicolai Højgaard, 35-1 longshots, make a strong run at the title. The twin brothers have a much better chance to win it all than their odds imply, so they're a target for anyone looking for a huge payday.

The Danish twosome has been making headlines abroad for years now, becoming the first brothers to ever win events in consecutive weeks on the European Tour back in 2021. They are now making noise on the PGA Tour as Nicolai finished second at the Farmers Insurance Open back in January and finished T16 in his first ever Masters appearance earlier this month. Nicolai also played this event last year, so his experience makes the duo an under-the-radar competitor at the 2024 Zurich Classic.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Zurich Classic picks

The model is also targeting three other teams with odds of 35-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Zurich Classic, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Zurich Classic 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Zurich Classic leaderboard , all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters.

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band co-founder and legendary guitarist, dies at 80

Updated on: April 18, 2024 / 8:38 PM EDT / AP

Guitar legend Dickey Betts, who co-founded the Allman Brothers Band and wrote their biggest hit, "Ramblin' Man," has died. He was 80.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer died at his home in Osprey, Florida, David Spero, Betts' manager of 20 years, confirmed. Betts had been battling cancer for more than a year and had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Spero said.

"He was surrounded by his whole family and he passed peacefully. They didn't think he was in any pain," Spero said by phone.

Betts shared lead guitar duties with Duane Allman in the original Allman Brothers Band to help give the group its distinctive sound and create a new genre — Southern rock. Acts ranging from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Kid Rock were influenced by the Allmans' music, which combined the blues, country, R&B and jazz with '60s rock.

DICKEY BETTS-DECESO

Founded in 1969, the Allmans were a pioneering jam band, trampling the traditional notion of three-minute pop songs by performing lengthy compositions in concert and on record. The band was also notable as a biracial group from the Deep South.

Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident in 1971, and founding member Berry Oakley was killed in a motorcycle crash a year later. That left Betts and Allman's younger brother Gregg as the band's leaders, but they frequently clashed, and substance abuse caused further dysfunction. The band broke up at least twice before reforming, and has had more than a dozen lineups.

The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2012. Betts left the group for good in 2000, and also played solo and with his own band Great Southern, which included his son, guitarist Duane Betts.

Forrest Richard Betts was born Dec. 12, 1943, and was raised in the Bradenton, Florida, area, near the highway 41 he sang about in "Ramblin' Man." His family had lived in area since the mid-19th century.

Betts grew up listening to country, bluegrass and Western swing, and played the ukulele and banjo before focusing on the electric guitar because it impressed girls. At 16 he left home for his first road trip, joining the circus to play in a band.

He returned home, and with bassist Oakley joined a group that became the Jacksonville, Florida-based band Second Coming. One night in 1969 Betts and Oakley jammed with Duane Allman, already a successful session musician, and his younger brother, and together they formed the Allman Brothers Band.

The group moved to Macon, Georgia, and released a self-titled debut album in 1969. A year later came the album "Idlewild South," highlighted by Betts' instrumental composition "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed," which soon became a concert staple.

The 1971 double album "At Fillmore East," now considered among the greatest live albums of the classic rock era, was the Allmans' commercial breakthrough and cemented their performing reputation by showcasing the unique guitar interplay between Allman and Betts. Their styles contrasted, with Allman playing bluesy slide guitar, while Betts' solos and singing tugged the band toward country. When layered in harmony, their playing was especially distinctive.

The group also had two drummers — "Jaimoe" Johanson, who is Black, and Butch Trucks.

Duane Allman died four days after "Fillmore" was certified as a gold record, but the band carried on and crowds continued to grow. The 1973 album "Brothers and Sisters" rose to No. 1 on the charts and featured "Ramblin' Man," with Betts singing the lead and bringing twang to the Top 40. The song reached No. 2 on the singles charts and was kept out of the No. 1 spot by "Half Breed" by Cher, who later married Gregg Allman.

The soaring sound of Betts' guitar on "Ramblin' Man" reverberated in neighborhood bars around the country for decades, and the song underscored his knack for melodic hooks. "Ramblin' Man" was the Allmans' only Top Ten hit, but Betts' catchy 7½-minute instrumental composition "Jessica," recorded in 1972, became an FM radio staple.

Betts also wrote or co-wrote some of the band's other best-loved songs, including "Blue Sky" and "Southbound." In later years the group remained a successful touring act with Betts and Warren Haynes on guitar. Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks died in 2017.

After leaving the Allmans for good, Betts continued to play with his own group and lived in the Bradenton area with his wife, Donna.
