Jordan Tice - An Acoustic Guitar, A Ramblin’ Mind And A New Solo Sound

“With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson, and he might have been talking about Nashville guitarist and songwriter Jordan Tice. Over 15 years, the 33-year-old has released six albums as a solo artist or bandleader, and if you’re looking for predictable sounds, you’ve come to the wrong catalog. It’s all generally in acoustic roots, but the widely varied expressions suggest a restless mind.

“I would say that is constantly changing and expected to keep changing,” Tice told me in a December interview you can hear in full below. “I mean, it really comes down to radically changing interests and listening habits.”

As his newest, the Fall 2020 release Motivational Speakeasy came together, Tice’s ears were tuned to the greats of the solo acoustic guitar, from the early bluesmen like Mississippi John Hurt to English mystics such as Bert Jansch to Americana folk pioneers like John Fahey and Leo Kottke. He had been planning another string band record, a minor variation on the ideas laid down in 2016’s Horse County . But as he workshopped new songs, his producer, Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids, suggested something more terse and self-contained. 

“He pointed out that if I could really kind of tighten (my guitar parts) up and lean on those, they're actually quite full, you know, quite complete. And he really encouraged me to see what I could do solo. We went to see Leo Kottke together at the City Winery. And he was like, ‘You could do that, or your own version of that.’” 

For the unfamiliar, we’re talking about an approach to the guitar that brings technically complicated right and left hand technique to the emotional terrain of blues and folk. The picking thumb keeps a bass line moving, while the other fingers stay even busier, making spider webs of counterpoint, clutching and grabbing strings in percussive clusters, brushing strings with fingernails for shimmering sounds, and more. Tice says this school grew out of old ragtime approaches to the blues and into “lead line type things, like a lot of musical moves derived from piano. I would say maybe that's the type of playing that that I really appreciate.”

On Motivational Speakeasy , this six-string finger dance stands out on “Walkin’,” which ripples along at more of a jogging pace, while Tice chants a talking blues bearing witness to change, large and small. “It seems the whole world was created by a ramblin’ mind,” he observes, following a tour-de-force guitar solo. The instrumental “Ghost Story” has outstanding harmonic motion, floating in its approach between formal classical guitar and Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen. “Bad Little Idea” has a floating, cheerful quality that belies the sardonic, tongue-challenging verbiage about a relationship falling apart.

Tice grew up in Annapolis, MD with parents who were both bluegrass musicians. After dabbling in some rock bands, he got captivated by the acoustic scene at the festivals his folks attended, both the intensity of musicianship and the community that supported it. That context easily explains the Tony Rice-inspired flatpicking and newgrass tone of his first two discs in 2006 and 2008 respectively. At the same time, Tice studied jazz guitar and then majored in composition at Towson State University. That background is what led to the intimate, spell-casting neo-classical sound of his album The Secret History in 2011, an instrumental trio album featuring guitar, bass and hammered dulcimer. He’s also been an active sideman, supporting bluegrass searchers like Frank Wakefield and Tony Trischka and Americana stars including The Duhks and the Dave Rawlings Machine.

A move to Nashville in 2015 synched up with his growing partnership with that very bass player, Paul Kowert (of Punch Brothers), and fiddler Brittany Haas, which grew into the acclaimed instrumental quartet Hawktail, which has released two LPs and had a touring head of steam before Covid. While the solo Speakeasy release suggests the limits of self-quarantine in 2020, it was actually conceived and recorded in 2019, merely the next idea among many. We get into all this in the conversation below.

REVIEW: Jordan Tice’s “Motivational Speakeasy” Explores Spontaneity in Music

Jordan Tice – Motivational Speakeasy

An LP that is a solo simply sustained by vocals & a well-worn Collings acoustic guitar (a guitar also played by Emmylou Harris, Pete Townsend, John Fogerty, Joni Mitchell & Keith Richards). Jordan Tice explores the spontaneity in music, the process of invention & creativity.

Tice’s touchstones are all inventive masters such as the late country-blues legend Mississippi John Hurt, John Hartford & John Fahey. Along with Leo Kottke, David Bromberg, Norman Blake with the songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan & John Prine.

Tice is about expressing oneself through music & not simply by playing to impress. He injects eccentricity, humor & sardonic nostalgia. Quite a bill despite the stripped-back approach.

Motivational Speakeasy (released Sept 25 – Padiddle Records) is a collection of 11-cuts with authenticity & musical flavors prowling through vivid finger-style guitar playing. Applied to well-articulated melodies.

Admirers of Kottke & Fahey will instantly enjoy the construction of the music & fans of well-written lyrics sung in a classic John Hartford style will come way smiling. Tice has a warm deep voice itself is almost as powerful in tone & gratifying as folk legend Fred Neil. Many times, there are wonderful LPs by accomplished acoustic & electric guitarists whose only fault lies in their weak vocals (Roy Buchanan). Roy, however, had a style that made up for his thin voice.

Recorded in Nashville it lacks commercial & candy-coated pop ingredients that seem to be part of Nashville prominent today. It’s what grows out of the music dirt. Not so with Jordan Tice. His is firmly rooted in more traditional, genuine & musically exceptional soil. There are many tunes singularly catchy & with an element of evocative strains.

“Walkin’” is Hartford in tradition with its fast-talking blues & engaging singing. Hard to believe this came to Tice as he walked the streets of New York City. But that’s what inspiration is. Is this old hat? Yeah, a bit. But there are human ears that thrive on this mostly rural organic showcase. While the performance is stripped down it’s not spare. There’s substance. There’s no muscle but it has flexibility. It will appeal more to ears than feet.

Fortunately, nothing sounds redundant. Each is a piece unto itself. “Creation’s Done,” “Ready to Go,” & “Goin’ on Down,” all possess clarity & proficiency. Tice is a musician who’ll get lost in the fray of radio. If lucky some college radio will slip a Tice tune on late at night to the joy of listeners looking for something that has complexity based on beauty.

Maybe the only criticism I have is that Jordan should lay down some melodies of his own with a more vintage tinge: “Desperate Man Blues,” (John Fahey). Other than that, Tice is on the right track – encapsulating so many respected guitarists & songwriters.

Jordan Tice

Known by many as a guitarist, Jordan Tice is also a celebrated singer and songwriter.

Those who have heard Jordan Tice perform with the bluegrass supergroup, Hawktail, know him for his mad guitar skills. Jordan has been compared to Leo Kottke and is known for his flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar playing. In addition to Hawktail, Jordan has played with Dave Rawlings, Yola, Andrew Marlin, and comedian/musician Steve Martin.

Jordan is also an accomplished singer and songwriter who released his fifth album in September 2022. Motivational Speakeasy perfectly celebrates Jordan’s vocal, guitar, and songwriting skills. His songs are rife with humor and introspection and have been compared to those of Bob Dylan and John Prine.

Jordan is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and was raised in Annapolis, Maryland, by parents who played bluegrass music. Despite (or because of) the music he heard at home, Jordan started playing rock, moved on to jazz and classical, and earned a degree in music and composition from Towson University. Ultimately, he returned to bluegrass, and an article in American Songwriter has said that Jordan “is one of the prime movers of the modern newgrass movement.”

In 2023, Marlin and Frantz will celebrate the release of Watchhouse (Duo) with a short run of shows that will feature just the two of them, harkening back to their earliest days of performing.

We’re very excited to announce a unique duo tour coming up, featuring two exceptional roots music artists from the USA. We have been enjoying the music of Jordan Tice and Liv Greene for several years now, and had the great idea to bring these two Nashville-based artists together for a collaborative UK tour in July this year.

Jordan Tice is a guitarist, singer and songwriter celebrated for his exceptional mastery of both fingerstyle and flatpicking guitar styles and a wide range of acoustic genres. Probably best known as a member of acclaimed folk-bluegrass supergroup Hawktail , his stellar musicianship is complemented by witty, well-crafted songs. Jordan’s solo performances have been compared to those of legendary artists like John Hartford and David Bromberg, for their mix of virtuosity and playfulness. His fifth album, 2020’s Motivational Speakeasy , was produced by Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids and garnered rave reviews. The follow-up, his 2021 EP Yesteryears , features five original instrumentals that show off Jordan’s phenomenal skill, and range of styles from folk to blues and jazz. He is also an in-demand sideman, and in addition to his regular band and solo projects, has worked with celebrated artists including Dave Rawlings, Yola and banjo/comedy legend Steve Martin.

Born in Washington DC, Liv Greene is an award-winning young songwriter and performer now based in Nashville, Tennessee. Her 2020 debut album Every Bright Penny is packed with dreamy, evocative songs that feature Liv’s  gorgeous, distinctive voice front and centre, and her second album is due to be released in 2023. Liv took up guitar and songwriting at a young age and discovered Americana, bluegrass and old-time music in her teens, particularly inspired by attending Miles of Music camp. She attended Interlochen Arts Academy and the New England Conservatory in Boston, regularly teaches songwriting workshops via the legendary Club Passim venue and music school in Boston, and already has a clutch of songwriting awards to her credit. Liv won the Kerrville Folk Festival’s 2019 New Folk Competition and was a showcase artist at Folk Alliance International 2021. I’ve been keen to bring Liv to the UK ever since I first heard her exceptional music several years ago, and she featured in our S treaming Across the Sea online festival last year. A mesmerising and very special artist.

Elton John Adds 11 New U.S. Dates to Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour: 'I Cherish These Memories'

Elton John will now wrap things up in Los Angeles in November with his 2,000th U.S. show

The sun is finally going down on Elton John 's long-running farewell tour, but not before he adds a few more shows.

The "Tiny Dancer" singer, 75, announced an additional 11 dates have been added to his lineup of Farewell Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour stadium performances, which is due to kick off in Philadelphia in July.

Some of the shows are extra dates at locations already playing host to John, including Toronto and Los Angeles, while others are new locations, like in San Diego, Tacoma, Washington and Santa Clara, California.

John's new show at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles in November will be his third night at the venue, and will also mark his 2,000th U.S. concert.

Other new dates will take place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Foxborough, Massachusetts, Charleston, South Carolina, Vancouver and Phoenix.

"It's hard to believe that after tomorrow in St. Louis, I'll have just a handful of shows left before I wrap up my final arena performances in the United States," John said in a statement. "This year will see my grand finale in North America, playing stadiums all around the country, with the most spectacular production I've ever had. Thank you for sharing this journey with me. I cherish these memories we're making together. It has been nothing short of incredible and I look forward to seeing you very soon one last time, on my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour."

The Grammy winner has 15 arena shows left in the U.S. before he begins his stadium run. After wrapping things up in North America in November, he'll head elsewhere for stops in New Zealand, Australia and Europe, where he'll conclude the tour in Stockholm on July 8, 2023.

"After the tour pause during the pandemic, it's so wonderful to see Elton back out there electrifying audiences every night, but obviously with this announcement of the final North American dates it's bittersweet as well," AEG Presents' Chairman & CEO, Jay Marciano said in a statement. "It's really starting to feel like the end of this tour is in sight, four years after it began."

John announced the tour back in 2018, but it's faced various delays and setbacks due to both COVID-19 and injury.

The musician celebrated his 75th birthday last week, and marked the milestone with a heartfelt letter written to sons Zachary, 11, and Elijah, 9 , whom he shares with husband David Furnish.

"You're 11 and 9 years old now, and when I was your age, I could never have dreamed where life would take me," John said in the note, which was published in Time . "Looking back over the past 75 years, there is so much I am proud of, so much I have learned."

The legendary piano man continued, "When I was young, I was told to fit in, to do what others expected even when it didn't feel right. Now I realize I can only be me. Being true to myself is what gave me my voice, and helped me face my greatest fears."

As a result of his authenticity, John said he discovered "deep friends, found the love of my life and became your Daddy."

"Whoever you grow up to be, just be you — fully and completely you," he noted.

Jordan Spieth started slow at the Valero Texas Open, but his day shifted with one shot – with a brand-new 7-iron.

Spieth made a hole-in-one at the 199-yard, par-3 16th hole at TPC San Antonio, his fourth career ace on TOUR. His tee shot landed on the left side on the hole’s donut-shaped green – playing to a back-left hole location – the ball landing some 30 feet short and bouncing a few times before rolling into the center of the cup. The Texan shared high-fives with playing partners Hideki Matsuyama and Lucas Glover and their caddies before acknowledging the raucous fans. He followed the ace with a birdie-par finish for a 1-over 73; he’ll enter Friday one off the projected cut line.

Had he not changed 7-irons on Wednesday, Spieth believes, he wouldn’t have made the ace.

“I had to take some off of a 7-iron and so I lined up to hit like a 185 shot and hit a little fade with the wind that kind of was able to ride the slope then. I hit it and I picked up the tee because I did what I wanted to do,” Spieth said afterward.

“It's actually a brand new 7-iron this week, only the 7-iron. I like hitting my 7-iron and so I've got it to where, when I'm testing my gaps, it like goes 5 yards too far in the gap. I didn't know why. On Wednesday after the pro-am I was hitting on the back of the range; I had them just bring a brand new 7-iron for new grooves and it was up in the right spin window, so knocked 4, 5 yards off of it. If I didn't change 7-irons yesterday, then I wouldn't have made it. It's funny.”

Spieth stood 4-over through 15 holes Thursday, a less-than-promising start in his home state. He carded four bogeys against two birdies on the front nine, turning in 2-over 38. He rebounded from a bogey at No. 11 with a birdie at No. 12, but he fell back with a double bogey at the par-5 14th when he went OB off the tee.

Then he made magic on TPC San Antonio’s famed 16th, his first TOUR ace since the third round of the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (No. 2 at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge), en route to a T4 finish.

Spieth had previously recorded holes-in-one at the 2013 Puerto Rico Open (finishing tied for second) and 2015 BMW Championship (T13). It’s a strong correlation of aces and high finishes – that he’ll look to continue this week.

“Seems like kind of like a bad blackjack run; you can't get up from the table, and maybe the hole-in-one turns it around a bit,” said Spieth, who missed the cut in his previous two starts, THE PLAYERS Championship and Valspar Championship.

“Like my game feels fine and I'm just not getting much out of it. So it's extremely frustrating because I drove the living piss out of the ball today and I picked the wrong line on 14 and it's the one drive I missed honestly like 5, 6 yards right of where I was looking and then I don't find it. I was like, ‘See, now my driving stats don't look the way they actually feel and I'm 4-over.’ I'm like, ‘This is not a hard track this afternoon, what in the world is going on?’

“I got a couple nice breaks late that maybe make me feel like the game's not as hard as it's been feeling.”
