The ambitious ‘Journey To The Centre Of The Earth’ was recorded on January 18, 1974, as Rick Wakeman recorded live with a choir, an orchestra, and a rock group.

Ever since punk broke, Rick Wakeman ’s detractors have jeered at what they perceive to be his excessive virtuosity, yet it’s undeniable that the keyboard maestro has played a vital role in fashioning a swathe of prog rock’s most venerable releases . First coming to prominence after playing the Mellotron part on David Bowie ’s breakthrough 1969 hit “Space Oddity,” Wakeman then spent two years with respected English folk-rockers Strawbs before replacing Tony Kaye in nascent prog superstars Yes, prior to the recording of their multi-platinum-selling 1971 LP, Fragile . All this laid the groundwork for arguably his most ambitious work, the solo album Journey To The Centre Of The Earth .

The ceaselessly creative Rick Wakeman had embarked on a solo career in 1973 with The Six Wives Of Henry VIII , eventually selling 15 million copies worldwide. Even before that was released, however, he’d started work on a musical re-enactment of Jules Verne’s science fiction novel Journey To The Centre Of The Earth , yet regardless of The Six Wives ’ success and Yes’ massive-selling double-set Tales From Topographic Oceans , Wakeman’s record company, A&M, balked at bankrolling studio sessions involving a choir and a full orchestra as well as a rock band.

‘free hand’: behind gentle giant’s gripping seventh album, ‘banana moon’: rediscover daevid allen’s debut album.
Eventually, a compromise was struck. With Rick Wakeman himself reputedly partially funding the project himself, A&M agreed to record his epic project live at London’s Royal Festival Hall, on the night of January 18, 1974. For this much-anticipated sold-out event, Wakeman was joined by the English Chamber Choir, the London Symphony Orchestra, a rock ensemble (mostly hand-picked from pub musicians who frequented his local in rural Buckinghamshire), and Blow-Up star David Hemmings: the latter recruited to narrate Verne’s story, which centered around the fictitious trio of Professor Lidenbrok, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans, who – with dramatic consequences – follow a passage to the Earth’s core.
A&M invested in recording just the one night’s performance but, with the pressure on, Wakeman and his assembled cast duly rose to the occasion. Though their hour-long show was edited down to 40 minutes for vinyl-cutting purposes, the LP’s two, ever-morphing 20-minute movements (“The Journey”/“The Recollection” and “The Battle”/“The Forest”) are nonetheless captivating, with Hemmings’ commanding oration offset by ghostly contributions from the chamber choir, and the LSO’s occasional Wagnerian overload tempered by funk-flavored rock passages, with Wakeman’s Minimoog and/or clavinet mostly leading from the front.
Journey To The Centre Of The Earth was rapturously received on the night, but its long-term commercial success was by no means a given. A&M dithered until co-founder Jerry Moss personally agreed to its release, but Wakeman’s self-belief was vindicated when the LP finally hit the racks. Following its release, on May 3, 1974, the album entered the UK Top 40, topping the chart on May 25, while peaking at No.3 on the US Billboard 200. Long after yielding an Ivor Novello Award and over 14 million sales for its creator, it continues to beguile new generations of fans.

The Rock Making Two More Journey To The Center Of The Earth Sequels
Warner Bros. seems pretty serious about being in the Dwayne Johnson business. The rumors continue to circulate that he's getting involved in the world of DC with Shazam , but he's already attached to a WB franchise. A couple of years ago, he assumed the lead role in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island , bogarting the franchise from Brendan Fraser . Now the studio's interested in making another Journey , but they're going to have to adjust course: it looks like it's going to be TWO more Journeys .
The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Chad and Cary Hayes have been hired to write the third and fourth installments in the Journey series. The Hayes siblings recently earned their reputation from penning The Conjuring . Surely Johnson noticed, as he is starring in their most recent script, San Andreas 3D . The hiring of the Hayes siblings suggests an effort to appeal to Johnson more directly, particularly considering two more movies (apparently being shot back-to-back) is a major commitment for the busy superstar. It also means goodbye to another writing team, Brian and Mark Gunn, who wrote the second film and were previously enlisted to pen part three. What is up with this franchise and brothers?
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was a surprise hit in 2012, grossing $335 million worldwide. That was higher than the $241 million brought in by the Johnson-less Journey To The Center Of The Earth , which starred Brendan Fraser. Fraser was playing the uncle to Josh Hutcherson's character, while Johnson was the new stepfather – given that Hutcherson will be back for his third go-round, maybe Fraser, who has been out of the spotlight, can return? Surely that would excite someone, right? These movies are pretty popular, but people aren't exactly running around quoting lines of dialogue from the "saga." It's believed that Brad Peyton would return from directing the second one, particularly considering Peyton is also currently directing San Andreas 3D .
Johnson's a hard man to lock up, particularly considering several of the franchises of which he's involved are in flux. Technically he's set to return for G.I. Joe 3 , but that remains in the development stage. And there hasn't been a word about spinning off his character from the Fast And Furious movies, despite that being a hot rumor awhile back. THR also reports that he's attached to Seal Team 666 , again with the Hayes brothers writing. It might be the case that whomever finishes a script first is going to get him onboard. You're on the clock, Hayes brothers.

Who are the luckiest people in the world? At least for theater fans, the answer is “people who need people,” a line made famous well over half a century ago by Barbra Streisand in the original production of the musical “Funny Girl.”

WHERE: Pickard Theater, Bowdoin College Campus, Brunswick
REVIEWED: June 28 (matinee); continues through July 13

On the heels of the show’s recent Broadway revival, the Maine State Music Theatre has opened a spirited production of the classic musical on its home stage at the Pickard Theater on the campus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick.
The show primarily captures the rousing excitement of early musical theater while unavoidably making us think about how it launched the career of Streisand. At a lengthy but enjoyable two-and-one-half hours, plus intermission, it’s a show that still charms with its memorable songs, old-style comedy and bittersweet love story.
The impressive production, directed and choreographed by Kenny Ingram and with the time-honored music of Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and book by Isobel Lennart, tells the semi-fictionalized story of Fanny Brice, a real-life figure who rose from humble origins to showbiz stardom as a give-it-everything-you’ve-got performer in the early 20th century.
At first socially awkward and vulnerable, but with a unique talent and an admirable determination to succeed, Fanny gained the attention of famed impresario Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. and went on to star in many of his glitzy stage shows. At the same time, Fanny’s personal life was a bit of a rollercoaster ride.
Jenna Lea Rosen takes the lead role and scores comedically with her initially wide-eyed approach to Fanny’s personal and professional challenges. Armed with a feisty “New Yawk” accent, the actress easily takes charge of backstage, front stage and offstage scenes. Her vocals are compelling on both comic numbers (“Sadie, Sadie” and “Rat-Tat-Tat-Tat”) and in more intimate moments (“People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade”). Advertisement
Douglas Raymond Williams plays Fanny’s handsome rogue of a love interest who brings her to a fuller life but fails her in the end. His opera-trained vocals alongside Rosen (“I Want to be Seen With You” and “You are Woman, I am Man”) establish both the heat and uncertainties within their relationship.
Among the many standout secondary actors and choristers, Tyler Johnson-Campion is a tap-dancing whiz. His work with Sue Cella, who plays Fanny’s mom, is a treat on “Who Taught Her Everything.” Cella also has some fun moments squabbling with a competitive friend played by Maine State favorite Charis Leos.
Tommy Betz shines as a Tenor and David Girolmo returns to the Pickard stage as the stern but supportive Mr. Ziegfeld. Jeremiah Valentino Porter gets to toot a hot horn on “Cornet Man.”
The Maine State Music Theatre Orchestra, led by Jason Wetzel, mixes up the period flavors with a newer Broadway expansiveness. The costumes designed by J. Theresa Bush and scenic design by Jeffrey D. Kmiec take the audience back to a distant era when musical theater and its early stars were on the rise.
