The New York City punk rock band, The Julie Ruin, was formed in 2010 by former members of Bikini Kill and they have been cranking out high energy punk songs ever since their formation.
The Julie Ruin performs their songs in a fast paced and loose way, which sometimes conveys a sloppy style to their presentation, but this seems to be what they are going for. They are incredibly confortable on stage and are not afraid to experiment with loud sounds. Although individually each member may seem to be playing a disorganized sound, when they all combine their music together it blends into something incredibly interesting and unique. The true essence of punk radiates from their performance with their uncontrolled sounds and high driven angst creating a wave of inspirational music. Kathi Wilcox and Kathleen Hanna bring over a lot of the genius sounds and playful, erratic antics that they created in Bikini Kill over to The Julie Ruin.
Kathi Wilcoxâs bass playing is very powerful and creates a strong rhythmic drive for the band. Kathleen Hanna belts out her lyrics in a high pitched shrill that seems to be run through distortion, which creates an abrasive and gritty sound that perfectly accompanies the music. The guitars are played by using the typical punk rock power chords. Quick, wild guitar riffs often whirl through the music, as well as some surf rock elements that are created by running the guitar through heavy reverb. Kenny Mellman plays staccato, jaunty sounds on his synthesizers that add a quirky style to the music.
The Julie Ruin are always performing with top notch energy, and joking around with stage banter and antics. Their punk mentality seeps into their music and attitude, creating an authenticity to their performance. The bandâs first record was released through Ian MacKayeâs acclaimed Dischord Records and they have been touring around consistently to put on high energy performances.

Kathleen Hanna once again proved why she is one of the most important performers of the past 25 years.
At times inspiring, funny, serious she was always rocking.
A great show by a true legend. Awesome stuff.
Being this close to your hero is unreal, being press to this show was unreal, I would not work in music if Kathleen hadn't paved the way for girls like me. Thank you.

Kathleen Hanna Hits Reset on a Painful Past
The Julie Ruin frontwoman and punk icon overcomes childhood trauma and a debilitating illness to produce a powerful new album.
The Julie Ruin's upcoming album, Hit Reset , begins with the briefest of fake outs. Drumsticks count us into the title track, followed by a jaunty drumbeat that carries the promise of a party anthem. But the tone shifts as soon as Kathleen Hanna starts singing: "Deer hooves hanging on the wall / Shell casings in the closet hall / Drunk from a mug shaped like a breast / Punishing the people he loved best." Almost as chilling as the lyrics are Hanna's breathy vocals in those first few lines, simultaneously evoking trepidation and childhood innocence.
Like so much of the band's second album, due out July 8 via Hardly Art, "Hit Reset" comes straight out of Hanna's personal history, injecting disarming honesty into lighthearted melodies. The Julie Ruin frontwoman, feminist hero, and alum of the groundbreaking acts Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, says the song is about her fatherâbut there's more to it than fearful memories. "It's not just about being a kid and not knowing if you're gonna wake up the next day because you had a dad with an alcohol problem and a big gun collection," she explains in a recent phone interview. "Hit Reset" also captures abuse survivors' fear that the propensity to hurt others is encoded in their DNA. "That's one of the worst damages abuse can do to people: make them feel like they're destined to abuse other people," Hanna says. "That's your worst nightmare. When you've been abused, thinking of doing that to someone else, putting them through what you've been through? It's a horror show."
Hit Reset doesn't focus on Hanna's youth in isolation. It also deals with the long, excruciating process of recovering from late-stage Lyme disease and connects the pain of that experience to the scars of a traumatic upbringing. By the time Hanna was diagnosed with the illness in 2010, she'd already been suffering its devastating effects for half a decade, having quit Le Tigre five years earlier because she simply didn't feel well enough to front a touring band. "I was told by my body that I had to stop," she says in Sini Anderson's documentary The Punk Singer , which documents Hanna's struggle with Lyme in the course of tracing her life and work.
The Julie Ruin, who take their name from Hanna's lo-fi late-'90s solo project, released their first album nearly nine years after Le Tigre's final full-length, This Island . The exuberant Run Fast and Anderson's film, both out in 2013, heralded the return of an artist who had been sorely missed. But less than a year into her comeback, Hanna relapsed, suffering a Lyme complication called Babesia that's similar to malaria. She canceled a planned three-month tour and spent the summer of 2014 undergoing treatment.
Years of recovery and relative isolation gave 47-year-old Hanna new perspective on her history. "I've had the time to reflect on the relationship between my childhood and the illness," she says. As a kid, "I didn't learn how to take care of myself. I didn't learn how to speak up and say, 'I'm too sick to do this.' I had to learn through the illness to say, 'I can't do this tour. I need to put myself first.' It still wasn't worth being sick, but I did gain some information. I always knew life was short, and to just say whatever I wanted. But it's definitely embedded in my bones in a much firmer way now."

I'm gonna decide if I'm gonna hang out with this person anymore. Or I'm gonna decide if, today, I'm just gonna let this person's bullshit roll off my back so I can get what I want.
This heightened awareness of the need to protect her own time and health pervades Hit Reset , an album that brings introspection and cohesion to the energetic party-punk sound The Julie Ruin debuted on Run Fast . First single "I Decide," a march of self-determination underscored by Hanna's controlled monotone, is the perfect encapsulation of that ethos. "It was a response to feeling pressure to be a certain way," she says of the song. "At the end of the day, I have to decide. I'm gonna decide what I'm gonna wear at the photoshootâor if I'm even gonna show up. I'm gonna decide if I'm gonna hang out with this person anymore. Or I'm gonna decide if, today, I'm just gonna let this person's bullshit roll off my back so I can get what I want." These survival skills can be especially powerful for members of marginalized communities, she notes.
Other songs on the album call out very recognizable toxic personality types. "Mr. So and So" is a blistering read of condescending male fans who "love girl bands, how they take command." Complete with a purposely bratty callback chorus, the song responds to what Hanna calls the dominant culture's "fetishization of feminism," as well as her "years of being tokenized" as a feministâand just plain femaleâmusician.
New wave jump-rope jam "Planet You" concerns itself with a different kind of bloodsucker: the narcissist. Hanna sees a connection between her early life and her tendency to get involved with people like this. "I realized I was picking people who were like abusive members of my family of origin to be friends with," she says. "I've been really trying to extricate myself from those relationships because, without even trying, people tend to repeat [their past], hoping, 'Next time I'll get it right.'" She's learned to ignore the sinking feeling that, "Oh my god, the world's gonna explode if I stop being friends with this person." In reality, "I cut it off, and my life gets better."
Hit Reset makes for an emotional listening experience; Hanna says she'll have to work to avoid crying onstage when she performs some of the songs. But epiphanies like the ones in "Planet You" and "I Decide" make it a cathartic and liberating album, too, one that's sure to become a talisman for fans fighting to seize control of their own lives. People sometimes tell Hanna she's a brand, but here she asserts her freedom to be a constantly evolving person instead. She points out that some of her views have changed since her years on the frontlines of the early-'90s riot grrrl movement. Her aggressively sexualized stage persona in Bikini Kill was a reflection of "the rage of 19 years that had been stuffed down and stuffed down," she says. Now, she wouldn't necessarily scrawl "slut" on her stomach or incorporate dance moves she learned at her job as a stripper, which sustained Hanna in college and allowed her to making a living while devoting much of her time to Bikini Kill. With The Julie Ruin, she says, "I dance because I really, really enjoy playing with a live band after so long, and I'm having fucking fun."
I dance because I really, really enjoy playing with a live band after so long, and I'm having fucking fun.
Not that she has anything against the latest generation of pop stars who mix sex and feminism. In fact, she embraces them. "There's a lot of women who have a lot of power in pop cultureâpower that I've never experienced. And instead of resting on it and making the same album over and over, they're actually challenging themselves," Hanna says. "To have that kind of power and then do something, like BeyoncĂ© has, that is paying tribute to the Black Power movement or to feminismâshe didn't have to do that. It's not like putting the words 'Black Power' or 'feminism' anywhere near your own name is gonna make you sell a gazillion records." Though she realizes the language of social justice can feel diluted when it enters the pop sphere, she's "not so cynical as to think BeyoncĂ© didn't take a risk in bringing these political, historical, and relevant issues to the fore."
If it sounds like Hanna is feeling magnanimous these days, that could have something to do with how grateful she is to be making music again. "I've always wanted to be a performer, I've always wanted to be onstage, and I've always wanted to be heardâso I'm really lucky," she says. While she was sick, her bandmates were some of the only people she saw regularly. Julie Ruin guitarist Sara Landeau, drummer Carmine Covelli, keyboard player Kenny Mellman (aka Herb of cabaret icons Kiki & Herb), and former Bikini Kill bassist Kathi Wilcox "created a space outside of my illness for me to be myself," says Hanna. "When I'm with them, it's like I'm just another musician in the room and we're working on this project together." Now officially free of Lyme and slowly weaning off the harsh medications she took to treat itâa process that involved "Stevie Nicks doses of Klonopin"âshe's preparing for a tour following Hit Reset 's release.
Hanna's gratitude also comes through on the albumâparticularly on closing track "Calverton" (the name of the Maryland town where Hanna grew up), a surprisingly soft piano ballad following 12 songs that sound upbeat even when they're devastating. It honors her mother, who couldn't save her from abuse, but whose love helped her survive. "My mom always whispered in my ear that I could do whatever I wanted," Hanna recalls. She sees that support as a vital source of the confidence it took to pursue the life of art and activism she's led for the past three decades. "Having one person in your life who tells you that you can do it, especially when you're a little kid in a bad situationâit can change everything."

Compilations, about the julie ruin.
Originally dubbed a one-off experiment by ex-Bikini Kill lead singer Kathleen Hanna, Julie Ruin released their self-titled record on the Kill Rock Stars label in September 1998, following the breakup of Bikini Kill in February of that year. Described as Hanna's alter ego, Julie Ruin picked up where Bikini Kill left off, singing of feminism, violence, objectification, juxtaposition, and the Valley Girl Intelligentsia. Best described as lo-fi electronica, Hanna recorded and mixed the record in the closet of her Olympia, Washington apartment with Paul Schuster. Julie Ruin did not tour to promote the record. Hanna then formed the similar project Le Tigre in 1999, but returned to Julie Ruin in 2010 as a band project with Carmine Covelli, Sara Landeau, Kathi Wilcox, and Kenny Mellman. The group's first album, Run Fast, appeared in September 2013 via Dischord Records. The ensemble went on to tour the record but were forced to halt their plans as Hanna was battling Lyme disease. Despite ongoing difficulties, the band returned in 2016 with Hit Reset, a commanding record of jagged dance beats and spiky pop that Hanna described as being some of her most personal work to date. ~ Stacee Sledge

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.
Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldnÂŽt have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of todayÂŽs Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow is Russiaâs largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europeâs largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system â each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russiaâs Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.
Moscow Tours centering on Russian History
Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations â capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms â he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russiaâs largest and most vibrant city.
Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers
What is the best time to visit moscow.
Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide
How many days are enough in Moscow?
If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.
Do they speak English in Moscow?
As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.
Is it safe to travel to Moscow?
It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
