Along with your experienced guide you will paddle at a relaxing pace and explore the shallow, calm, blue-green waters of the back country of Key West. You will glide through the winding mangrove creeks and paddle through inches of water, where you can easily view and learn about the geological structure of the Keys along with its inhabitants, all from the comfort of your kayak. Your adventure will give you a chance to view the mangrove environment up close, along with its marine life including tropical fish, crabs, sea stars, jellyfish, sea cucumbers, sponges and various aquatic birds. A trip to Florida would not be complete without visiting this southernmost point in the continental United States. While you are here, you are actually closer to Havana, Cuba, than Miami, and Cuban food is featured prominently on many menus. Plan to try foods inspired by the flavors of the Caribbean, including conch fritters, pink shrimp, stone crab, hogfish. Be sure to leave room for dessert, as this is the home of the famous Key lime pie! Underwater enthusiasts come to visit the world's third-largest living coral reef. The reef extends as far as Miami to the north and the Dry Tortugas National Park to the west. Throughout the Keys, there is an abundant variety of sea life, including colorful fish, manatees, bottlenose dolphins, sea sponges, turtles and so much more. Visitors will enjoy the laid-back lifestyle. Activities include water sports, visiting historic sites and lounging on picturesque white-sand beaches. The unique architecture of the conch-style houses was first developed here in Key West.

What time does the kayaking tour start.

Is the tour guided or we go by ourselves?

All our tours are guided by trained professional tour guides. They make sure that you are safe and that you get the most out of the experience. For the kayaking adventure, the tour guide will even jump in the water and show you different critters, educate you about them.

Do you offer shuttle service to your location?

We do not offer shuttle service. We do offer complimentary garage parking for the duration of the tour.

Are there restrooms, changing rooms on your property?

There is a restroom facility located beside the pool on the Beachside Resort & Residences that our tour guests are welcome to use.

What is a minimum age for your kayaking tours?

Our tours are suitable for kids 4 years old and up riding a double kayak with a parent.

Are the night kayak tours private? How many people go on the tour?

Night Kayak is the group activity. Our fully booked tour will have 6 single kayaks and 6 double kayaks on it.

I am trying to book a single kayak but the reservation system doesn't let me, I only see doubles?

That would mean that all the singles are already booked. Please browse other dates or tour times. Our online booking system shows real-time availability - if it doesn't let you book - it means we don't have it available.

If all single kayaks are booked, can I book a double and ride solo?

It is possible for a single person to ride a double kayak solo but that person needs to be 190lbs or less because all the weight will be just on one end of the boat (without anything on the other end to counter-weight).

What is the weight limit of the kayaks?

Single kayak 250lbs Double kayak 350lbs for two people combined weight

Is there a big difference single vs double kayak? Do you see more in a single?

In our opinion the perception of the tour is about the same in single or double kayak.

What do you recommend we wear for the kayak tour? Are we going to get wet?

Shorts and t-shirts. Bring a hoodie for colder nights during winter time. You might get a little wet but you shouldn't get soaked. Shoes, water shoes and flip flops stay on the dock as they scratch the plexiglass bottom of the kayaks.

Is is buggy there at night, are there mosquitoes? Can we use the bug spray on the Kayaking tour?

It's not buggy at all despite what most people think. Please DO NOT use bug spray as the chemicals that are in it damage the clear coat of the plexiglass kayak bottoms.

For the Kayaking tour, do you have lockers where we can leave our valuables?

We have a dock-box that we lock for the duration of the tour. You're welcome to leave your things inside and your tour guide will unlock it after the tour.

Can we bring drinks? Is alcohol allowed?

Alcohol is not allowed on the kayaks, but it is on the boat. For kayaking, you can bring a bottle of water etc but alcohol is not allowed. You have to be 100% sober to do this tour. If you show signs of intoxication we will refuse service and you will not be refunded. Your safety is our priority. For boat trips, you're welcome to bring your own alcohol, and we have a cooler to keep it cool.

What are we going to see on the kayak tour?

You will see nocturnal marine life that becomes active at night but we can't promise any particular animals as every tour is different and we don't have residential critters that would always be waiting there for us :)

What is your cancellation policy?

Minimum 24hrs notice before scheduled tour to receive full refund - that gives us a chance to resell your tickets. We reserve the right to cancel the tour for safety reasons, fe. weather etc. If we cancel the tour - everybody receives full refund. Refunds usually take around 10 business days to process and reflect on your credit card.

Escape the ordinary - only 15 minutes from busy downtown Key West, Geiger Key is a pristine paradise. For easy paddling, we select the best route depending on weather, wind and tide conditions. Your expert nature guide takes you through sheltered winding mangrove trails, pointing out native marine life, plants and birds of the Florida Keys. Each tour is different as you explore nature’s touch tank and your guide looks for unusual sea creatures to pass around and touch. Learn about this tropical ecosystem and how the mangrove islands and sea grass beds serve as a marine nursery for Key West’s fish, animals and birds. See dolphins, turtles, rays and bright fish in the water, iguanas sunning in the trees and birds soaring overhead. Feel the tropical air kiss your skin, hear tropical bird calls around you.

No experience is necessary. Our expert guide provides you with paddling tips for both kayaks and paddle boards. We use high quality sea kayaks with comfortable back rests. Both single and tandem kayaks are available. On our 11AM and 3PM tours you may choose a paddle board instead of a kayak. We provide stable, easy-to-paddle, high tech touring boards. These boards are designed for riders up to 250 pounds with a contoured nose section to cut through chop with more forward speed and a comfortable paddling position. Children are welcome on kayaks. Guests must be 13 years of age or older for paddle boards.

Each tour is limited to a small group, making it easy to follow your guide as they point out the various marine life, plants and birds during the tour. We pride ourselves on having the most knowledgeable and friendly guides in Key West so you can ask lots of questions along the way. Or if you prefer, just glide along, enjoy the sounds of nature, and soak in the natural beauty surrounding you.

Key West Eco Tours is located in the Geiger Key Marina at the Geiger Key Paddle Hut, 5 Geiger Road (MM 10.5), Key West FL 33040.

For guests taking the tour, there is plenty of free parking in the Marina parking lot. Limited storage is available for small items at the Paddle Hut.

What To Bring

Polarized sun glasses, towel, sunscreen, and large brim hats. Don’t forget your camera! We ask that you not use aerosol sunscreen, it makes the kayak and paddleboard slippery and the chemicals harm our beautiful marine ecosystem. You will probably get wet on this tour - please dress appropriately. If you burn easily, consider sun protective clothing.

Get set for three great Key West adventures rolled into one day: a Key West schooner sail; a guided kayak tour of mangrove islands; and a snorkel tour of backcountry patch reefs. This is a diverse, awe-inspiring ecosystem in Key West’s backcountry, and we can’t wait for you to experience it for yourself.

This tour is limited to 20 passengers, to provide everyone with ample seating, room to spread out, and a truly personal experience. Your relaxing day on Key West’s tropical waters starts when our 65’ bugeye schooner, Appledore Star, departs the Historic Seaport. Our excursion to the backcountry begins when we unfurl her billowing sails for a truly authentic Key West maritime experience. Let your inner sailor come out to play on this singular tall masted wooden ship by helping to raise the sails, then take your turn at the wheel.

Then we start exploring the uninhabited—at least by humans—mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. And this is the perfect ship for your eco-adventure, as the shallow-drafted Appledore Star is a historic bugeye schooners that dragged for oysters in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. There is so much marine wildlife that call this refuge home, keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, stingrays and many other species. Our captains know where the dolphins prefer to play and will let you know if they spot any in the area.

Also, several hundred species of birds call these mangroves home and on any given day, you may see ospreys, frigates, blue herons, bald eagles and even roseate spoonbills. In the water, look for sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays and tropical fish.

Once we reach the mangrove islands, your crew will drop the schooner’s anchor and the in-water fun begins! Your day is divided between a guided kayaking tour and a guided snorkeling tour.

For kayaking, your crew will help you into your sea kayak and provide paddling instructions. Don’t worry if you aren’t used to paddling—the warm, shallow water is calm and sheltered by the mangroves which makes this some of the best kayaking in Key West.

While kayaking, the crew will tell you all about the mangroves and their important role as nurseries to the sea. Learn how mangrove trees survive in salt water and about the varied marine life that inhabit this unique, delicate ecosystem.

Ready to get in the water? Perfect! Now it’s time for a guided snorkel tour. Before getting started, you’ll receive professional instruction from our experienced crew along with information on the sponge gardens. Don’t worry if you’ve never snorkeled, our crew is here to answer all of your questions. Before you know it you’ll be snorkeling your way through the calm, shallow waters of the sponge gardens. Look around and you’ll see a lot of the different species that call the gardens home, including tropical fish, sponges, and marine wildlife. And if you’re new to the water, or would just prefer to float, grab a noodle, lean back and watch the clouds drift by.

It’s true that tide and weather conditions throughout the different areas of the mangrove islands can vary. At Sebago, we pride ourselves on providing our guests with the best experiences possible. Your captain will use his years of expertise to chart a course that will deliver you to the best possible kayaking and snorkeling locations.

After your tours, come back aboard and ditch the salt with our fresh water rinse. Find a comfortable spot to relax on deck and choose from plenty of complimentary cold drinks—frosty beers, wine, Sebago’s homemade sangria, chilled sodas and filtered water. When it comes to laid-back island living, we’re happy to show you how it’s done.

An all-you-can-eat, fresh lunch buffet feast is also served while you’re aboard. shrimp cocktail, pulled pork sliders, coleslaw, pasta salad, veggie & hummus wraps, and chocolate chip cookies. Available on the Appledore Star lunch only.

As the day begins to wind down, we pull up the anchor and say goodbye to the magical mangrove islands. This intimate nature tour is limited to only 20 passengers, providing you with ample seating and room to spread out for your relaxing day on the tropical water. Departing from Key West’s Historic Seaport, the Appledore Star’s sails are raised for an authentic sail experience on the way to Key West’s backcountry. If you always wanted to sail a tall ship, this is your chance to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. We encourage passenger participation!

Your day is spent exploring Key West’s uninhabited mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. The shallow-draft Appledore Star is the perfect design for your eco adventure, being a replica of historic bugeye schooners that dragged for oysters in the Chesapeake Bay. On your kayaking tour, the crew talks about the mangroves and their important role as nurseries to the sea. After your tours, come back aboard and wash off with our fresh water rinse. Find a comfortable spot to relax on deck. Choose from plenty of complimentary cold drinks – frosty cold beer, wine, homemade sangria, chilled sodas and filtered water. This is the best of laid-back island living.

Lunch is also served on the boat, an all-you-can-eat fresh buffet feast. Start with peel & eat shrimp and delicious fried chicken. Move on to a selection of deli meats and cheeses accompanied by assorted breads and condiments.

Once the day winds down, its time to raise anchor and leave the mangrove islands behind. Refresh yourself with another tasty beverage, including our tropical homemade sangria. Mangrove Maze

We offer tours of the mazes of mangroves within the southwest quadrant of the island of Key West. These tours are best for smaller groups, as the mangrove tunnels can be narrow enough for just a kayak or two in certain areas. Our guides will allow you to explore the protected forests in a way no other vessel can. Here you will learn about the unique properties of mangrove trees, salt ponds, and the creatures that live beneath the surface of our beautiful waters. This tour takes approximately 2.5-3 hours and is perfect for all experience levels. We always offer a 5 minute kayaking tutorial at the beginning of each tour for our beginners.

Gulf of Mexico Sunsets

Take in the Southernmost Sunset from the unobstructed views of the water. Our tour guides will take photos of you and your loved ones kayaking among the vast Keys marine life. Blue Moon Kayak Key West has adopted Cow Key Channel and is always looking for additional help to clean up our local waters. Here is your chance to help make an impact on your vacation by looking closely in the water, in the mangroves, and on the beaches. Everyone can make a difference by spending a little time of their day picking up one – two – three or more pieces of plastic.

We will educate you on the different types of debris we find, and how long each takes to decompose in our natural environment, and what impacts they have to our local flora and fauna.

Blue Moon Kayak Key West is part of a non-profit Paddle with a Purpose . Portions of this tour proceeds will go directly back to Paddle with a Purpose to help fund larger scale water way clean ups.

Our captains make sure to take our guests to the best sandbar location. We will be cruising through the Florida Marine Sanctuary to a back country adventure in the Gulf of Mexico. The whole excursion lasts approximately 5 hours.

Then, by headlamp (and starlight), view nocturnal animals such as moray eels, stone crabs, lobster, squid, octopus and stingrays as they appear only inches beneath you. Your venture through a red mangrove island at night is both eerie and surreal . Enjoy the magic of an underwater light show as your paddle excites bioluminescent plankton .

Because our tours are sheltered from the wind, we encounter no large waves which makes for the perfect marine-life experience! Dolphins and sea turtles can also be seen sometimes. Great for novice and experienced paddlers alike, your foray into the backcountry will leave you exhilarated and in awe of our blue planet and all the wonders she has to offer.

Please note: You will need to arrive at the meeting location 35 minutes prior to the start time of the tour. Also, we will provide plenty of mosquito repellent. (Yes, they do sometimes come out during sunset!)

Meeting Place and Check-In Time

If you have chosen hotel pickup, we will contact you before the tour to make arrangements. Otherwise, please meet your guide at the picnic area outside East Martello Museum, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd. , Key West, FL 33040, located near the Key West International Airport. Once you arrive, briefly park your car ( no bikes/walk-ups/taxis allowed ) while you check in with your guide. Wait in the lot and then follow your guide in your vehicle about 2.5 miles to the dock where the kayaks will be waiting! Lost? Please call 305-394-0280 .
Please arrive 35 minutes before your tour is scheduled to depart. We will leave right on time!
Feel free to bring your own beverages with you. You may even bring a small cooler that will fit in a tandem kayak
Dress appropriately for the day’s weather. If light rain is predicted, bring a rain jacket!
Wear a bathing suit and light clothing that you won’t mind getting wet. You may get splashed from time to time by paddle drip!
In the winter, consider bringing a sweater or a windbreaker, as it can get chilly out on the water
Bring extra cash (~$40) if you’d like to purchase any Blue Planet Kayak souvenirs and to tip your tour guide
Please do NOT bring your own kayak, as our dock does not allow personal kayaks
Gratuities for your hardworking guides are greatly appreciated
We provide dry bags and PFDs

What is not included?

Snorkeling or swimming are not included. The really cool stuff is seen in water only a few inches to a few feet deep!

Chevron down What should I bring on my kayak tour?

We encourage you to bring the following:

Water (preferably in a reusable water bottle)
Swimsuit/clothes that you don’t mind getting a little wet
Sunscreen/sunglasses/hat
Shoes that can get wet/sandals
Towel for after the trip
Any extra gear you’d like! Remember – the less gear, the more visibility through the kayak!

We will provide you with the following:

Dry bags to store your personal items
Safety equipment including lifejackets and whistles
A clear kayak with seats and paddles
A knowledgeable tour guide

Every tour is given on one of our 100% clear kayaks.
Our fleet is small (5 kayaks) so expect an exclusive experience (no more than 10 people at a time).
Private tours are available per request.
Our guides are always helpful and entertaining (and they love tips).
Chevron down Are children allowed on the tour?
Yes, children are welcome on our daytime tours! For our nighttime glow tours, we only allow teens ages 12 and older.
Children 6 and under are required by law to wear a life jacket at all times while on the water. We provide lifejackets for children that are above 30 pounds.
We require children 30 pounds or under to bring their own Coast Guard approved life jacket as the size is very specific and safety is of utmost importance.
We require one adult per each child under age 17
We require two adults per each child 3 years old and under.
Chevron down What skill level is needed for kayaking?

Our tours are made for any skill levels to participate, we will have basic tips and tricks to help you maneuver the waterways. Some paddling may be considered intermediate but we try our best to paddle at a pace that is convenient for every paddler! We do require all guests to stay with the group. We also ask that all guests have upper body mobility and capacity to walk up and down steps to enter/exit kayaks.

Chevron down Is it appropriate to give a tip/gratuity to our tour guide?

Tips are greatly appreciated. We like to say, “ If you enjoyed your ride, tip your guide !”

Standard US gratuity is 20%!

Chevron down Is there a weight limit for the kayaks?

YES! Our weight limit is no more than 250 pounds per person and no more than 425 pounds per 2 people that are in the same kayak. All of our kayaks are double kayaks. Unfortunately our kayak manufacturer has given us this strict limit of 250 pounds per person and we cannot exceed this limit.

Chevron down Are the kayaks tandem or solo?

Each of our kayaks are tandem (made for 2 paddlers). However, the seats are removable and if you have an odd number of paddlers in your party we are able to accommodate the kayak as a single.

Keep in mind, the same 250 pound PER person weight limit still applies even if taking a kayak out as a single.

Chevron down Are pets or alcohol allowed on tours?
If you’d like to bring a small dog, please note that they would be required to sit on a towel that you provide, to stay within the kayak, to have a floatation vest, and to be below the weight limit, which is that 2 humans plus 1 pet cannot exceed 425 lbs. Please add a comment to your booking if you are planning on bringing a pet.
Alcohol is prohibited on the tour.

These tours are best for smaller groups, as the mangrove tunnels can be narrow enough for just a kayak or two in certain areas. Our guides will allow you to explore the protected forests in a way no other vessel can.
