Folk singer and songwriter King Creosote aka Kenneth Anderson from Fife, Scotland (born 1967) in his lengthy career has released over 40 studio albums and also been an integral member of the Scottish-Canadian band The Burns Unit.

In the early stages of his career, Anderson played in many local Scottish bands such as Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra and Khatoum Heroes and in 1995 he launched the record label Fence Collective with Johnny Lynch where he began producing and releasing material under the moniker King Creosote.

In 1998 King Creosote made his album debut with “Queen of Brush Country” featuring the tracks “Fell The Way Down, Leslie”, “Homeboy” and “Piano Crushing Back”.

On many occasions Anderson has collaborated with Domino Records and Warner music on several releases. As a huge advocate for vinyl only releases, Anderson actively seeks to keep the precious format alive.

In 2007 two of his tracks “The Someone Else” and “King Bubbles in Sand” featured on the soundtrack for the British drama film “Hallam Foe”.

In 2011 Anderson was invited to play a couple of shows at SXSW festival in Texas, U.S. and later that year his collaborative album “Diamond Mine” with Jon Hopkins was nominated for both the Mercury Prize Award and Scottish Album of the Year. For the 2014 Commonwealth Games Anderson created the official soundtrack for the tourist film “From Scotland With Love” which was later broadcast on the BBC.

Anderson can often be found collaborating on recordings and live performances with his siblings Ian (aka Pip Dylan) and Gordon (Lone Pigeon).

Live reviews

Kenny Anderson is an enigma. He is my favourite songwriter but not everyone will get him. I don't think that Kenny himself wants everyone to get him. A curio, a cult following, a musical life slightly off the radar. The Barbican last week was incredible, emotional and tear-jerking. A gorgeous room, with millions of pounds of wood, sound panels, a big screen and wonderful seats. The Thekla in Bristol, compact, dark, cramped, sweaty, more personal with regular opportunities to applaud, heckle and praise. I was lucky enough to speak to Kenny after both gigs. He seems shy and slightly uncomfortable with the adoration of his fans and I like that. His Thekla performance was peppered with inter-song banter that was sweet, funny and felt unscripted. His voice doesn't always hit the high falsetto notes and his contorted face admits that. His songs are not especially complex, often with a three or four chord sequence that is strummed and repeated for 3-4 minutes. Yet, he is fu*^ing wonderful. The voice is pure, yearning, touching, emotive, perfect for the songs.

The closing number, My Favourite Girl, is amongst his most popular and it is simplicity and brilliance in one. It captures exactly in 4 minutes the essence of King Creosote. I adore this man and you might too. The King is dead. Long live King Creosote.

King Creosote is the stage name of this Scottish native, Kenny Anderson who has really made a splash in the singer songwriting scene in Great Britain, performing a slew of his fantastic songs led by him on an acoustic guitar, holding the audience in a big way. These people watching him have been with him since the start of his journey as a singer songwriter. I have to be honest; in my opinion he sounds and looks like he can’t be bothered to sing these songs, looking like an uncomfortable person who’s been entered into a talent show by their mean friends, however, I can understand that with better production, this performance would definitely make a lot more sense and the stories would translate a little bit more effectively. “Favourite Girl” is one of the songs that works really well, in this set accompanied by a harmonium organ, providing some good counter melodies to his vocals.

Travelled from Fort William to see King Creosote in St Andrews. A three hundred mile round trip that was truly worth the effort.

The seven people on stage were each brilliant musicians and completely complimented each other. There was a clear rapor between them and from start to end their performance was fantastic.

Their new tracks as well as older material were played so well and a responsive audience seemed to feed back to the band.

It was a really friendly intemate gig and the hour and forty minutes seemed to fly by.

Musically and atmosphere wise this was one of the best concerts I have ever seen.

Kenny Anderson had a great sense of humour when introducing songs and you could feel the audience appreciated his personal touch throughout.

My partner and I have followed his music for many years and left the concert even bigger fans of his work.

A great night was had by all.

What a fantastic show!

We went with friends who had never seen King Creosote before and their description of the concert was “Sensational”

With the 9 piece band the range and impact of the music was superb.

Having seen King Creosote many times in small venues, he was in no way out of place in such a fantastic setting as the Concert Hall.

The background film was entertaining and nostalgic.

The spontaneous standing ovation from the audience just sealed it.

King Creosote

One of Scotland's most acclaimed and prolific singer-songwriters

If you build a fence then you have to treat it, as any DIY buff will tell you. You have to make it durable; to help it help us weather storms. Fife's Kenny Anderson realised this when forming micro-label, Fence, in 1994 – and so he treated it, then treated us, with an alt-pop alter-ego: King Creosote.

Anderson has become one of Scotland's most acclaimed and prolific, singer-songwriters: a squeezebox Casanova with a cosmic wordplay fetish, whose voice leaves gentle devastation in its wake. He was short-listed for 2011's Mercury Prize thanks to Diamond Mine, his sublime collaboration with Jon Hopkins.

Other key LPs in the KC canon include Kenny and Beth's Musakal Boat Rides (2003), Rocket DIY (2005), KC Rules OK (2005) Bombshell (2007), Flick the Vs (2009) and his live-only album, My Nth Bit of Strange.

In 2014, Anderson completed his first-ever film soundtrack for From Scotland With Love. The film weaves Scottish archive film footage with KC compositions. Meanwhile, Fence continues to thrive, thanks to home-grown live events like The World Tour of Crail and Yellae Deuks in nearby Anstruther, the DIY Scottish pop throne is his.

Most recent album, Astronaut Meets Appleman (Domino, 2017) has kept King Creosote firmly in the limelight and secured many glowing reviews and the KC audience continues to grow across the UK, Europe and beyond!

King Creosote - I DES

Available Formats

Latest release, king creosote i des, album | 3rd november 2023.

They say long live the king and all, but nothing’s ever set in stone. A quarter of a century since his self-inflicted coronation, and self-released debut solo album,  Kenny Anderson - DIY pop voyager, ancestral seaside home restorer, squeezebox lothario, Fife for lifer, diamond miner, hijacker of hearts, and the man also known as King Creosote - has released over 100 records (at a relatively conservative guess),  collaborated with the likes of Jon Hopkins, KT Tunstall, Beta Band’s Lone Pigeon, and had his songs covered and performed by artists including Patti Smith and Simple Minds.

Yet he’s still standing: fallible, doubtful, patched together, bloody-minded and unbowed. He’s got a new LP, despite or perhaps because of it all. It’s called I DES .

THIS EVENT HAS EXPIRED

A Celtic Connections stalwart, Kenny Anderson brings his DIY pop alter-ego King Creosote to Glasgow’s iconic Old Fruitmarket. 25 years on from his self-released debut solo album, KC returns with November 2023’s I DES, an album that “digs deep into his previous work and continues his quest to navigate mortality, ardour, stormy waters, the moon in the sky, and the East Neuk of Fife.”

Equally at home on stage or serenading fans in the fishing pubs of Crail and Anstruther, King Creosote marries guitar, banjo, accordion and modular synths with a singular voice and an array of roguish, roving, and ever-evolving songs.

This event will take place in EartH Theatre.

King Creosote, the alt-pop alter-ego of Fife's Kenny Anderson, has become one of Scotland's most acclaimed and prolific singer-songwriters: a squeezebox Casanova with a cosmic wordplay fetish, whose voice leaves gentle devastation in its wake. He was short-listed for 2011's Mercury Prize thanks to Diamond Mine, his sublime collaboration with Jon Hopkins.

“Unconventional king of Celtic folk-rock” - Evening Standard

“A beautiful voice from a man with self-deprecating charm and a natural way of capturing intimacy in a song” - The Times

King Creosote. If you build a fence then you have to treat it, as any DIY buff will tell you. You have to make it durable; to help it help us weather storms.
