Hike Mount Lam Lam in Guam [TRAIL GUIDE]
Boast to your friends that you hiked the tallest mountain in the world, and did it in sandals while getting a tan using this trail guide to hike mount lam lam in guam.
Just know that if you run around boasting that if you Hike Mount Lam Lam and call it the tallest mountain in the world on your instagram page, people are going to give you the look. You know the look.
Mount Lam lam is 1,332 ft above sea level at its highest point, but, since it rises from the Mariana Trench, it is technically the highest mountain on Earth. It isn’t the highest mountain above water, but if you dropped Mt Everest inside the Mariana Trench, there would still be about 6,000 feet of sea water above its peak!
Start Your Hike of Mount Lam Lam
Finding the trailhead is easy, but just keep in mind, most hiking references that are listed online mention a parking area along the east side of the road that is red – it is now white. The trailhead to Hike Mount Lam Lam is directly across the street, marked with a green sign. As with the majority of this hike, it starts off heading uphill at a nice steep and steady pace. Be sure to bring plenty of water and dress appropriately (sun screen, sunglasses, proper footwear, etc).
Welcome to the Jungle
The first switchback portion of the hike offers killer views of the rolling hills and coastline before dipping into the jungle-like foliage. You quickly come across a small nook and cave-like area that has a Virgin Mary shrine along with some other very interesting trinkets. Catch your breath, snap some photos, just do you, then get back on that trail.
From this area, the trail does a few more switchbacks, climbing steadily up until you reach a Y in the trail. If you head to the right, you will go to the plateau that is riddled with crosses – every year people Hike Mount Lam Lam to access this area – it is used for a tradition by local Catholics of stationing large crosses upon the secondary peak.
The Summit of Mount Lam Lam
For the actual summit, take a left at the Y intersection and enjoy the reprieve of uphill hiking while you meander along the plateau making your way back towards the water. The trail careens in and out of shaded, densely populated patches of Guam island beauty. Eventually, the trail tucks into the trees and heads directly uphill via some boulder scrambling before revealing the summit. At the summit of your Hike up Mount Lam Lam, the US flag marks the spot.
American Pride on the Summit
There are fantastic views from the summit in all directions. I had the opportunity to watch a quick rain storm cruise it’s away over the hills and all the way across the island. This hike should be a must for anyone visiting the island and looking to get some dirt on their toes.

The Secrets To Hiking Mount Lamlam
- Wednesday, June 3, 2020
- Category: Hiking
By Keisha Harrold
If you are visiting Guam and are looking for a beautifully unique experience, then you’ll love Mount Lamlam! The views are impressive, on one side looking over the lush hills of the island and on the other side gazing into the ocean’s horizon. This hike is fairly short, but in the end you’ll have bragging rights for climbing “The World’s Tallest Mountain.”
Mount Lamlam is the highest peak on the island of Guam. If you think about where this island is placed, rising 37,820 feet above the floor of the Marianas Trench, then measuring from the bottom of sea level to the tip of this peak — Mount Lamlam is the tallest mountain in the world! This submerged mountain is full of secrets waiting to be found.
WHAT TO BRING FOR HIKING MOUNT LAMLAM
Make sure to bring water. The hike is uphill and fairly windy, plus you can become dehydrated very quickly in Guam’s heat.
Apply sunscreen before you go. There’s really no escape from the sun on this hike, so be sure to protect your skin.
Don’t forget your camera. You’ll want to capture the breathtaking views.
It might be worth wearing longer pants to avoid scrapes and cuts from the sword grass in sections of the hike, or for if you get an urge to go off the path a bit.
Bring snacks to enjoy. Personally, I like the idea of doing some sort of simple picnic at the top of Lam Lam while watching the sunset with friends. Of course, that’s optional.
DIRECTIONS TO MOUNT LAMLAM
The mountain is located near the village of Agat, in the south-west of the island. The trailhead is pretty easy to find. Every year the trail is used for a tradition by local Catholics of stationing large crosses upon the secondary peak. The path is well worn and there shouldn’t be problems to finding your way up the mountain.
If you are coming from Tumon Bay, it will take approximately 40 minutes to reach the trailhead.
Turn right (south) onto Marine Corps Drive and continue on Route 1.
You will be forced to turn left before entering the Navy base. This will lead you onto Route 2A, continue onto Route 2.
You’ll reach Agat, drive through and continue approximately 3 miles.
You will see a red wall on the right side where you can park, the trailhead is on the left, across the street. There is a small green trail sign by the head.
If you reach Umatac you’ve gone too far and need to turn around.
Lamlam means “lightning” in the local language, Chamorro. On this evening, Mount Lamlam certainly lived up its name. From the top of the mountain we watched a cloud in the distance as the sun was setting. Every few minutes the cloud would flash with the beauty of lightning. It was extraordinary. Every time someone hikes to the top of Mount Lamlam they are sure to have a unique experience.
Whether you are with a group or by yourself, don’t miss out on hiking this mysterious mountain. Find out for yourself what is so spectacular and maybe it will share a secret with you.

No need for oxygen tanks and a trek to the Himalayas to climb what might be the tallest mountain in the world.
Mount Lamlam on Guam — just 1,332 feet above sea level — is another 36,070 feet from the bottom of the Marianas Trench, roughly 200 miles below. By contrast, the peak of Mount Everest — if placed at the bottom of the trench — would still be 6,000 feet under water.
Lamlam, which means lightning in the local Chamorro language, is the defining peak in Guam’s rugged, jungled southern tip near the oceanside village of Agat. It is the premiere mountain “boonie stomp” — the local term for hike — on the 210-square-mile island.
Lamlam is near Mount Jumullong Manglo, Guam’s second-highest peak. A small and necessary detour on the main hike, which is unique for its summit silhouetted with crosses, is a sight that can be seen for miles along the highway. Often mistaken for Lamlam, it’s a sacred spot for Guam’s Roman Catholic population who every Easter march up the path with crosses and plant them along the route and at the Jumullong Manglo summit.
Like many Guam hikes, Lamlam’s trailhead isn’t the most obvious, and the parking area isn’t, either. About 10 minutes south of Naval Base Guam along Route 2, there will be a turnoff and roadside parking for the Bakanan Cetti Overlook. Park there and walk across the road where you will see a sign identifying the way up Lamlam. You will see plenty of tourists at the overlook, but most likely you will be the only one hiking up the trail, giving yourself a serene, quiet hike in one of Guam’s more picturesque areas.
The route is well worn, but not well maintained. The red dirt quickly turns to red mud, and sword grass will infiltrate the walkway as you approach the summit. Some portions of the trail will require you to protect your face while navigating through the sharp grass. It’s not recommended to attempt it during rain.
The hike itself is a round trip of 2.5 miles to both summits. Portions of the trail are shaded, which allow for cooler places to rest and drink water; however, the majority of the trail is open to the sun, so skin protection is a must.
The trail is never incredibly steep, but it is a steady elevation climb of more than 600 feet. Give yourself about three hours to safely complete the hike, though it can easily be accomplished in a much shorter time.
Along the route up you are rewarded with impressive views of Cetti Bay and the island’s southern range. You can also see Route 2 zigzag through Guam’s hinterland. At the summit, you will finally be rewarded with sprawling views of Guam’s interior and north side — a site no other spot on this U.S. island territory can give you.

DIRECTIONS: From Tamuning, take Route 1 until you hit Naval Base Guam and turn left onto Route 2/2A. Ten minutes past the base, turn off right into Bakanan Cetti Overlook parking area, walk across the road and enter at the Mount Lamlam trailhead sign. TIMES: Open 24/7, but due to lack of maintenance don’t attempt in the rain. COSTS: Free FOOD: Bring your own food and plenty of water. Locals sometimes sell snacks at the overlook.
