- The keys to praying silently so you can hear God's voice
- The three ways Mary works to convert sinners
- How specifically to pray for the healing of a broken heart
- Why and how you should pray the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows of Mary
- How a Marian apparition is judged to be worthy of belief
- What Mary teaches us about praying for the dead
- And, finally, Our Lady's wise and consoling words for persons with debilitating diseases, for families struggling to conceive, and for couples struggling to heal their marriages.

Journeying with Mary Through Lent
A review of A Lenten Journey with Mother Mary by Fr. Edward Looney
+JMJ+ Growing up, I had a very deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. Some of my fondest memories are of First Saturday Fatima devotions at our church, May crownings, and our nightly family Rosaries. I hate to admit it but my brothers and I looked forward to nights when we prayed the Chaplet instead - it's much shorter. Whenever a family friend went on pilgrimage and offered to bring our prayer requests, I always had a page full of special intentions to send along. As I got older (and busier), my prayers became much less frequent. After my rape, I resented the Rosary and pretty much every part of the Catholic faith. Honestly, the only reason I kept going to mass was because it was expected of me by my parents. Though I struggled, a part of me just couldn't give up the faith that had always been so dear to me. Now an adult, I have slowly been finding Mary again and it's been wonderful and refreshing. When I heard about Fr. Looney's new book, A Lenten Journey with Mother Mary, I was intrigued. After all, what better person to journey through Lent with than the person closest to Jesus on earth, Mary His mother?
This book is designed to be used over the course of the Lenten season and into the Easter season. There is one reflection for each day beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending on Divine Mercy Sunday. For the sake of getting a feel for what this book was all about, I read it over a span of a few days. However, I plan to read through it again (starting on Ash Wednesday) and reflect more deeply on each devotion.
Each week introduces a particular theme and each reflection that follows over the course of that week mirrors that theme. Fr. Looney talks about prayer, conversion, healing, he provides information about various Marian apparitions as well as how the Church determines which ones are worthy of devotion, and offers some practical advice in regards to prayer and other matters. Over the course of the book you are (in essence) taking a spiritual pilgrimage to the places where Mary has appeared.
One of the most important points sticking out to me after reading this is that Mary is our intercessor in Heaven. Honestly, I often forget that! The Blessed Mother prays for us when we struggle. She never forgets us, her children. Over and over again through various apparitions across the world, she invites us to her Son. She doesn't replace Him or try to "take over." Rather, Mary helps pave the way for us so that we may develop a closer relationship with Jesus. Time and time again Mary has come to spread messages of peace, strength, and renewal; always encouraging us to live holier lives and always asking us to come back to her Son. Time and time again, the Blessed Mother speaks to our hearts and shows us her motherly concern. Of course Mary's faith is discussed at length and no wonder. Such a persistent faith she had!
Never once did she give up; never once did she doubt. Her only desire was to do God's will. Her "yes" to God changed everything. It forever changed the course of history and forever changed our very existence. Her "yes" came at a price, however. She suffered greatly but willingly. One of the devotions Fr. Looney explains is that of the 7 Sorrows of Mary and he encourages us to pray this devotion, not only during Lent, but beyond. When you reflect on Mary's 7 Sorrows and all the hardships she went through, it's hard to fathom just how much trust she had in God. But she did trust and, in doing so, she encourages the rest of us to put our trust in him as well.
Throughout the book we are asked to examine our prayer lives just as Mary has asked us to do whenever she has appeared. Prayer is, of course, one of the ways we come to trust in God – it helps to lead us there. Believe me, I know how tough trusting can be! When you've suffered various trials and disappointments, your trust can sometimes falter. On a side note, I want to remind you that struggling to trust doesn't make you any “less” of a person or any less a child of God. In any event, Mary reminds us to trust and to pray. We learn of a story about Juan Diego to whom Our Lady appeared in Guadalupe, Mexico. Instead of going to see Mary as he had promised, Juan Diego was rushing to his sick uncle. He avoided the place where she had appeared many times previously. She found him and asked, "Where are you headed?" "It was as if Mary was saying, 'Why are you avoiding me?'"
Fr. Looney asks, "Could Our Lady say the same thing to us? Could Jesus ask us the same question?" He entreats us to examine our prayer lives. Do we pray often or minimally? Do we turn to prayer only when we are in need? Is it mechanical or more thoughtfully done? Questions like these help the reader to delve deep into their life as a Catholic Christian and help us to examine our lives and reflect on what we can do better in order to reach greater holiness.
At her apparitions, Mary speaks to us, her precious children, with tender, loving care and encourages us to ask for her intercession. Our Lady of Guadalupe asked, "Am I not here, I who am your Mother? Are you not under my shadow and protection? Am I not the source of your joy? Are you not in the hollow of my mantle, in the crossing of my arms? Do you need something more?"
Such a comfort it is to know that we are not alone! Even in our suffering and pain, even in dark times, Our Lord and the Blessed Mother are with us. Fr. Looney reminds us that, just as Mary journeyed with her Son on the long road to Calvary, she offers us consolation on our journeys and as we carry our own crosses. Mary offers us comfort and hope. She helps us to unite our sufferings to that of her Son's. Mary is a mother - to Jesus and to all of us. On the cross, Jesus gave her to us . Wow! Think about that for a moment: the Son of God gave us His mother! Should we not, then, follow her example? Is that not what Jesus asks us to do?
Most of us probably recognize that this world is in need of healing - physical, spiritual, emotional, and psychological. In her apparitions, Mary always brings a message of healing for us. We are reminded that Mary seeks to bring healing to us, especially that which is needed as a result of personal sin. She encourages us to examine our consciences and to delve deep into whatever things might be holding us back from following Jesus. Fr. Looney tells us that, like a good mother, she tells us things that challenge us – things we may not want to hear – and she does it for our own good. There is no better time to listen and to cleanse our souls than during the Lenten season.
Jesus gives us His mother so that we may follow her example and be led to greater holiness. Remember, Mary never replaces her Son and Fr. Looney is very clear about this. Some of you may be asking, “Why do we have devotion to the Blessed Mother anyway? Can't we just go directly to God with our love, praise, devotion, and prayers?” Personally I look at this this way: we ask our friends and family to pray for us sometimes, don't we? If you ask the people around you to pray for you, why not ask the Mother of God to pray for you and with you? Jesus should be our best friend. Mary is our best friend's mother! Why wouldn't we want a relationship with her?
I'm always a little surprised when people underestimate Mary's role in, not only the life of Jesus, but in the life of the Church. I mean, out of every person to have ever been created, God chose her to be the mother of our Redeemer. She carried Jesus, gave birth to Him, raised Him, taught Him, and followed Him. That's got to count for something! If Mary is "good enough" for the Son of God then she's good enough for you and me! We are right to look up to her with love, respect, and devotion.
This is a beautiful devotional and I highly recommend it! Thank you, Fr. Looney, for gracing us with such a remarkable and eye-opening book! I truly felt as though I was being led through Mary's life and into the messages of her apparitions and, in doing so, I was led closer to her and to Jesus. Whether you are someone who has a relationship with Mary already or someone looking to develop a relationship with her, this book is full of rich tidbits of information and powerful reminders of how Mary brings us closer to her Son.
May we all strive to follow Mary and learn from her example so that one day we can say without hesitation (as she said at the Annunciation), "May it be done unto me according to your will." This Lent, I encourage you to journey through lent with Mary the mother of Jesus. A Lenten Journey with Mary is a perfect way to do just that. Just as she journeyed with Jesus through His life, she also wants to accompany us. She gives us the grace to say "yes" to God just as she said "yes" so long ago. Mary desires that we find peace. Invite her into your life and into your areas of brokenness, and she will help lead you to greater peace and healing.
Suggested practice: if you're not already doing so, try praying the Rosary. The lives of Jesus and Mary are intertwined and you see this especially through the prayers and mysteries of the Rosary. Make it a goal to say the Rosary (5 decades) daily for a week, reflecting on each mystery and each prayer as best as you can. I know it's tough for those of us who are parents with little ones running around or those of us who have busy minds, but just do your best! Invite the Blessed Mother (and even a favorite saint) to pray with you. Through the power of the Rosary, God will do great things in your life! Try it and see where it leads you.

Find healing in Lent with Mother Mary
Hans Memling | Public Domain
We are all in need of healing. Often our lives are a mess and the mistakes that we have made are difficult to overcome.
However, the good news is that God can heal our wounds, and who better to intercede for us than our heavenly Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary? Just like any mother, her heart aches at the sight of our wounds and wants to do all she can to help us bandage them and move forward, renewed and in full spiritual health.
Parish priest and mariologist Fr. Edward Looney has provided such a pathway to healing with his new book, A Lenten Journey with Mother Mary . In it, he provides short meditations for each day of Lent.
Each meditation reflects both on the interior life and prayer, while using the messages of various approved Marian apparitions to help drive the point home.
The first week is aimed at “ Examining Your Conscience ,” which focuses on opening up your own soul to see where you need to grow this Lenten season.
The second and third weeks of reflections look at the importance of “ Praying for Others ,” and how frequently Mary wants us to intercede for our brothers and sisters in the world.
During the fourth week, “ Mary Teaches Us Methods of Prayer ,” and Fr. Looney highlights the different ways Mary has taught us to pray through her apparitions.
The fifth week is focused on “ Healing ,” and looks to Mary for a path of renewal in our lives and in the world.
Holy Week is aimed at accompanying Mary during this most sacred week of Jesus’ Passion, and Fr. Looney ends his book with one last set of reflections during the Easter Octave, focusing in particular on Mary and the message of Divine Mercy.
The book provides a fresh perspective for Lent and not only facilitates spiritual renewal , but also gives you a glimpse of Marian apparitions that you may not know very well.
If you are looking to deepen your spiritual life, find healing and grow in your relationship with Mary, pick up A Lenten Journey with Mother Mary !

Walking With Mary in Lent: 10 Little Steps
In the wee hours of the morning, shivering from the cold , damp interior of the darkened Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, I lingered in prayer at the rock of Calvary. Resting my hand on the cold rock where the noble cross of Jesus Christ stood upright on the first Good Friday, I prayed. Oh, how I poured my heart out! I was in a spiritual place of desolation when I arrived on retreat in the Holy Land having just gone through a big upheaval in my life. Doors closed, paths turned, and the future seemed unclear to me. I was searching and completely open, available and docile to the next phase of God’s plan for my life.
In the exalted atmosphere of Calvary, now in the spiritual state of freedom, I set my heart on Christ’s passion and death. Placing my hand on Calvary’s surface, I contrasted the cold, hard rock with the warmth of the Sacred Heart aflame with love’s passion. In the pangs of death by crucifixion, his heart was entirely kindled with the fire that he longed to start on earth. He was ready to offer his heart to be pierced, desirous of opening his sacred side to be the portal for the saving water and blood that would gush over humanity to redeem it. In the words of Augustine, “What sacrifice can I offer to God worthy of his mercy?”
In the silent hours I remained in prayer, I could almost hear the cacophony of the murderous crowd at Calvary and the contrasting peaceful, steady rhythm of the heart of Jesus. How very perfect is his sacrifice! It became incredibly personal: I crucified him and it was for me that he suffered and died. I pondered if I would have remained near the cross with Mary, and John the beloved, Magdalene and the other holy women? Would I have run away in fear with the first Apostles?
The mystery remains, but of this I became certain. If I had remained at the foot of the cross at Calvary, it would have been because of Mary’s maternal solicitude. I would have looked into her eyes for a sign, a cue of sorts. I can’t imagine that I would run away in fear if I had looked into the eyes of the Mother of the Crucified One, ever faithful and courageous! One faith-filled look from Mary would have helped to plant my feet in a steadfast manner at the foot of the cross. Gazing into Mary’s eyes mirroring the Lord, I would have known that the abyss between heaven and earth was about to be bridged by the cross upon which hung Jesus.
Looking at Mary so full of love, and knowing that she is looking back at me, coaching me in virtue, protecting me from cowardice, I would have believed and hoped against all appearances of failure. I would have taken my mind off myself and focused on what was really happening here: the redemption of the world! Mary’s loving gaze would have reminded me of her Son’s words, “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy” (John 16:22). Mary, the perfect Mother of Grace, would urge me to join in her hymn of praise, the Magnificat . Though her holy face would be wet with tears and her heart seven times pierced with sorrow, Mary is the perfect icon of fidelity, courage and love in the midst of the unfathomable sacrifice of Jesus, bone of her bone, flesh of her flesh. Here hangs Mary’s Son, the God-Man so disfigured by the brutality of sin, urging the Father to forgive his executioners. Here stands Mary, in unspeakable pain, full of grace, without fear or shame, full of hope. Her feet firmly planted on the rock of Calvary, she knows the time of salvation has come. Was she relieved when Jesus said to Abba, “It is finished”? Perhaps. But in her maternal heart of wisdom, she must have known, that it was only beginning for her and the Church.
I’ve been praying about how to best live this Lenten season. It has become clear that the Lord is inviting me to keep company with Mary on the way of the cross. Mary can aid us to peer into the mystery of the passion and death of Jesus to discover a love we need to know. She will protect us from countless temptations in the desert of Lent when the devil would like to sift us like sand. He fears Mary and would rather flee than be near the Woman who is the New Eve: obedient and full of grace!
The Lenten desert can be a place of decrease where the false self and unrealistic expectations are put to death for good. Passages from death to new life are not always easy. Mary can accompany us and help us to discern what we need to let go of in order to receive the greater gift of God.
Mothers are adept at helping us to clean up, get ready, and put things in proper order again. Mothers are skillful at applying healing salves to the wounds of children. Mary excels at holding us close to her heart in an embrace that brings peace and strength. Mary never tires of repeating the truth that we are beloved of God. She can help break the chains that bind us from true freedom such as the pesky addictions (alcohol, food, TV, Internet), the compromises (missing times of prayer and the sacraments, illicit relationships, numbing laziness, or frenzied busyness). If we invite Mary into our brokenness, her holiness will take over and help to sever whatever binds us from authentic freedom, love and joy. She doesn’t invade our lives; we need to invite her.
Mary enriches our spiritual journey always. Perhaps we can consider living the Lenten season with Mary as fulfilling our Marian consecration also.
How do we walk with Mary during Lent? Here are 10 little steps.
- Take up Mary’s spiritual practices, which likely included, praying the Psalms, meditating on the Scriptures, offering hymns of praise and gratitude to God such as her Magnificat.
- Imitate Mary’s courageous “yes” more intentionally as you walk the Stations of the Cross with her.
- Imitate Mary’s forgiveness and mercy at the foot of the cross where she also forgave her Son’s executioners.
- Imitate Mary’s complete focus on her Son Jesus during all the phases of his suffering; and her intercessory prayer for everyone involved.
- Strive to live Mary’s faith, hope and love, simplicity, sacrifice, service and obedience—even in the face of such terrorizing agony.
- With Mary, sit at the feet of Jesus, choosing the better part—perhaps attend Eucharistic Adoration more frequently and read John’s Gospel, Chapter 19.
- Take up Mary’s “beads”. Intentionally, live Mary’s memories! Linger in contemplation of the Sorrowful Mysteries, asking Mary to help you encounter Jesus in His Passion that you may love him more.
- Consider when Jesus breathed his last and Mary did as he said, “Behold your son”—John the Beloved. She took him into her heart and brought forth the best of his Priesthood. Consider the vocation of spiritual motherhood or fatherhood of priests.
- With Mary, receive Holy Communion more often, mindful that Mary helps you to encounter Jesus more intimately.
- Console the Sorrowful Mother along the Via Dolorosa, perhaps offering to share in her pierced heart for love of God and neighbor.
Julian of Norwich wrote about Mary, “Our Lord showed me our Lady, Saint Mary, to teach us this: that it was the wisdom and truth in her, when she beheld her Maker, that enabled her to know him as so great, so holy, so mighty, and so good. His greatness and his nobleness overwhelmed her. She saw herself so little and low, so simple and poor compared to God that she was filled with humility. And so from this humble state she was lifted up to grace and all manner of virtues, and stands above all. This above all causes the soul to seem small in its own sight, to see and love its Maker. And this is what fills it with reverence and humility, and with generous love to our fellow-Christians. The seeking, with faith, hope and love, pleases our Lord, and the finding pleases the soul and fills it with joy.” ( Enfolded in Love ).

An Introduction to a Lenten Journey with Mother Mary
- January 8, 2020
Charlie McKinney
Lourdes, a village in the Pyrenees Mountains of France, is one of my favorite places in the world to pray. It was there, in 1858, that the Blessed Virgin appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous, transforming a garbage dump into a beautiful grotto for Our Lady. Every time I sit in front of the grotto and pray, I sense the love of Mary. Gazing up at the Madonna of the grotto, I am caught up in the beauty of the Blessed Virgin, the Immaculate Conception.
On the last day of one of my many visits to Lourdes, I found myself at one of my favorite restaurants in town. I had just finished my meal when another American walked in to dine. While in Lourdes, whenever I hear someone speak English, my ears perk up, and typically I start a conversation with the person. This was true for the American who just walked in. Let’s call her Anna.
I was wearing my Green Bay Packers fleece jacket with pride. As Anna passed by my table, she shared that she was from Chicago, whose football team is one of the archrivals of the Green Bay Packers. I asked her if this was her first time in Lourdes, and it was. She joined me at my table and ordered her meal and I began to tell her what she must do during her three days there. Whenever I talk to someone in Lourdes, I ask the person, “What brought you here?” It is a place known for healing. And the stories of people find a way into my heart and my prayer. What Anna shared was a beautiful spiritual story detailing her European journey. She traveled alone, as I do, and Lourdes was neither her first destination nor her last.
Anna had been in a difficult marriage , and after only a short while, she and her husband separated. This led her on a spiritual journey of prayer, retreat, pilgrimage, and healing. She traveled a lot for work and had amassed frequent-flyer miles and hotel points, and at some point, she decided she needed to make a religious pilgrimage to Europe. It was not going to be like any pilgrimage you or I have ever taken. She wanted to spend a few months on this journey. She had a plan and a reason for all of it, and she also relied on divine providence to guide her.
The first leg of her trip was to complete what is called El Camino de Santiago , or the Way of St. James. This is a pilgrim’s journey on foot, beginning in Spain, France, or Portugal, to the town of Compostela, in Spain. During these days of walking, a person experiences a lot — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Anna wanted to walk the Way of St. James so she could let go of a lot of anger and hurt. A person walks the Camino with all his belongings in a backpack. Along the way, he might have to let go of something to make the bag lighter and easier to carry.
After she completed the Camino , Anna headed to Fatima, Portugal, the site of a series of Marian apparitions received by three children in 1917. Our Lady, in her messages there, encouraged the recitation of the Rosary and taught the children some additional prayers, one being what is called the Fatima prayer, often added to the end of each decade of the Rosary: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell; lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of Your mercy.” Anna said she went to Fatima because she was looking for forgiveness. It seemed like a natural progression: after she spent some time letting go of her emotional and spiritual baggage, she wanted to seek the Lord’s mercy. She believed Fatima was the place for that.
From Fatima, she headed to Lourdes, where she sat across from me in the restaurant. Many physical healings have happened at Lourdes, but spiritual and emotional healings happen as well. In Lourdes, people immerse themselves in the piscines , or baths, and wash themselves in the healing water discovered by St. Bernadette in 1858. Anna was seeking the healing of her soul, her heart, and also seeking healing from a physical infirmity from which she suffered.
Anna told me that she planned to visit Poland next, especially the Shrine of Divine Mercy. In the 1920s, Jesus began appearing and speaking to St. Faustina. These experiences are recorded in her diary, Divine Mercy in My Soul . The popular image of Divine Mercy, of Jesus with red and white rays coming forth from His heart, has the words “Jesus, I Trust in You” at the bottom. For Anna, after she let everything go, sought forgiveness, and prayed for healing, she wanted to develop a greater trust in God.
I share Anna’s story because I was privileged to be a part of it and to share in it. Her sharing her faith in God, manifested through pilgrimage, touched my soul. I hope and pray that Anna received what she sought on her European pilgrimage. I also share her story because I think it is the movement of our hearts and spiritual lives during Lent. Our meditations in these pages, spanning the season of Lent, will be a journey similar to Anna’s.
In the first week, we will let go of our sins as we examine ours and later seek forgiveness through the sacrament of Reconciliation. In weeks two and three, we will respond to Our Lady’s request to pray for specific intentions, focusing on one each day. In our fourth week, we will learn different methods of prayer and give each a try, and in the fifth, we will focus on the need for in our lives and in our world. During the Triduum — Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday — we will move to a reflection about Mary in those days of Jesus’ life. During the Easter Octave, we will continue with a postlude to our Lenten journey and turn our focus to St. Faustina, just as Anna ended her pilgrimage to Poland and the Shrine of Divine Mercy. During these days we will focus on developing greater trust in God.

For the 40 days of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday ( Feb. 14) and goes right up to Easter ( March 31 ), we are called to penance by means of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. If there is one person we can ask to help and accompany us on our Lenten journey, it would be the one who was closest to Jesus, and that would be His mother, Mary.

A review of A Lenten Journey with Mother Mary by Fr. Edward Looney +JMJ+ Growing up, I had a very deep devotion to the Blessed Mother. I hate to admit it but my brothers and I looked forward to nights when we prayed the Chaplet instead - it's much shorter. Whenever ...
