First Flex Rate stage delivers a comfortable ride with the ability to flex/expand during full articulation as the suspension drops (full droop). This keeps the coil springs seated in the upper coil mount\bucket and the tires in contact with the terrain. Second Ride Rate stage only engages after compression past Flex Rate.

Front and Rear Lower Control Arm Relocation Brackets make room for Long Arm Value Flex Lower Links. Value Flex Longer Lower Links adjustability allows proper caster settings to improve handling. Formed from 2-inch OD x 0.250 wall DOM tubing with pressed-in OEM style steel encased rubber bushings at the frame and the axle mount has Rock Jock’s 1-1/4-inch forged Johnny Joints. These Johnny Joints provide over 30 degrees of unrestricted Flex movement in any direction.

Front and Rear Adjustable Upper Control Arms keep in phase with lower links. Replacement Front Adjustable Track Bar includes Skyjacker installed pressed-in HD OEM style rubber bushing and an adjustable 3/4-inch Heavy-Duty Rod End, Jam Nut and Alignment Bushings.

Front and Rear Bump Stop Spacers bolt onto the axle bump pads and keep the suspension travel safely in check. Rear Extended Length Sway Bar End Links allow full articulation as the suspension drops (full droop).

Rear Track Bar Lower Axle Mount Bracket mounts directly to the rear axle housing to correct the track bar angle. Dana 44 Rear Track Bar Mount Brace strengthens the factory mount that is prone to failure. The track bar bracket and brace create better handling with less side-to-side sway.

Shocks are a key link in-between the chassis and your suspension. Front and rear damper capacity enhanced with ADX 2.0 Adventure Series Remote Reservoir Aluminum Monotube Shocks. ADX 2.0 has a race-inspired full-displaced valving system. Nitrogen charged with Internal Floating Piston Technology = Quickest Shock Reaction Time Ever.

Complete kit maintains OEM geometry angles, alignment specifications and structural strength.

Front and Rear Replacement Drive Shafts are Required.

I Wore This Viral Lululemon Belt Bag Across Italy for 10 Days, and Now I'll Never Vacation Without It

It has so much space that I could easily fit my passport, wallet, sunglasses, and more.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Back in 2022 I embarked on a 10-day trek across Italy, and if there was one thing I knew I needed to pick up before the journey, it was the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag . At the time, the popular bag — the one you’ve likely seen all over the Internet — was sold out online as well as in most of the other stores across Manhattan, but the very morning of my flight I made a last ditch call to the location near my apartment and was met with nine thrilling words: “We just got them back in stock — but hurry.”

After traveling with my new bag through an airport in Norway on an unexpected layover, to the city streets of Rome, I knew that I would never go on another vacation without my belt bag — and two years later that remains to be true. Plus, right now you don’t have to search high and low for these bags like I did, because the $38 pack is currently fully in stock in 14 stunning colors on the Lululemon site, including new shades like the spring-ready Paradise Green.

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag

This versatile bag is everything you could possibly need in a functional travel pack: At 7.5 inches by 2 inches by 5 inches and with a capacity of 1L, it’s spacious enough for my sunglasses, wallet, passport, keys, and phone, and is easily adjustable to fit across my body when wearing just a tank top and even when I'm tucked away in my winter coat. The primary pocket features mesh pouches on either side, which I usually pack my keys and a lip balm into, and an additional slim pocket on the back of the pouch is my favorite way to ensure my passport stays safe and protected.

Water-repellent nylon fabric makes this bag perfect for both rainy days and sweaty adventures, and unlike most bags with adjustable straps that leave one long piece left hanging, this pack is made with a thin piece of elastic that evens out the loop for a more streamlined appearance. It can even be worn as a traditional fanny pack (which I use for running outside), as well as across your body for easy access to your essentials while hurrying through the airport. Thanks to its functional and versatile design, the Everywhere Belt Bag made it onto our list of favorite fanny packs to take hiking .

Travel + Leisure / Merrell Readman

I can get overwhelmed if I have too much to carry while I’m traveling, and this bag has shown me the joys of a hands-free vacation experience. It made it much easier to get through TSA and boarding my flight because my passport was always just a short reach away, and even on outings in Florence and Rome, I was happy to not worry about my purse getting snatched off my shoulder if I were to let my guard down.

I’m not the only shopper that swears by this versatile fanny pack for travel now, and other Lululemon customers can’t help but rave about this sleek and functional bag. One shopper noted that they “travel a lot” and admitted that the bag is now “indispensable,” adding that it is the “perfect size with convenient compartments to keep well organized without the heavy bulk of a traditional purse.”

Another shopper raved that this pack is “nice if you’re traveling or just doing errands” because “if you have to pull your phone out or your wallet, [they’re] right there instead of digging through your purse to find whatever you need.”

It’s very rare that an item is actually worth the hype that it has garnered, but in this case the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag has earned every ounce of praise it has received. Not only can it fit a frankly impressive amount of essentials (I’m an overpacker), but it’s also comfortable to wear, sleek, and has quickly become one of the most-used bags in my collection.

Right now, the shopper-loved belt bag is available at Lululemon starting at $38, and is currently in stock in 14 stylish shades. Just don’t wait too long — it’s notorious for selling out quickly.

And if you're looking to elevate your travel style with other comfy and functional essentials, keep reading to find more must-have items to shop at Lululemon.

News | Rich Archbold: Nate Jones, Grand Prix of Long Beach head wrangler, keeps his dream alive

long travel wrangler

Nate Jones, a fixture at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach for almost half a century as its operations director, loves the roar of engines and the squeal of tires.

Wearing his weathered cowboy hat, Jones, who calls himself the Grand Prix’s head wrangler, will spend this week roaming the paddock area, where IndyCars and equipment are housed. It’s a critical job to make sure that drivers and their teams meet deadlines for the multiple races during the 49th Grand Prix of Long Beach, which will take place in the city’s downtown from Friday to Sunday, April 19-21.

Jim Michaelian, president and CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, called Jones “our jack-of-all-trades who fixes any operational problem we have.”

“He has to keep track of a million things,” Michaelian said, “and he’s great at it.”

Jones fell in love with hot rod cars in high school. And in his 20s, Jones built his own tire company in Signal Hill, which has had some big-name clients, including Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld. He has become a recognized expert on wheel balancing and tire truing — a process to make tires perfectly round — so cars run better.

He took on the job of operations director starting during the first race of the Grand Prix of Long Beach in 1975. Jones also invested $5,000 to help get the race started.

“It was risky back then,” Jones said this week, “but it sure has paid off.”

Jones, who just turned 80, was born at Seaside Hospital (now MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center) in 1943.

He has oil and rubber in his veins — but kids in his heart.

While he built his legendary tire and Grand Prix career, he has also had a dream of helping young people use their brains in solving problems.

“Young people today spend too much time on cell phones and video stuff,” Jones told me. “They are afraid to get their hands dirty.”

Over the years, Jones has started some projects with names like “Kids, Hands and Minds Together” and “Kids Motorsports Education,” programs dedicated to teaching young people how to build go-karts so they can develop skills using math, science, art and design.

“We had some success,” Jones said, “but we were using volunteers and never could get enough financial help to keep things going.”

But he has not given up.

He still dreams of acquiring land to build a go-kart race track and have kids build the tiny cars with the help of adults.

“I have a couple of sites in mind that would be good for a track,” Jones said. “Now, I need to find sponsors and donors to purchase a site and build the educational program.”

Jones has the moral support of Michaelian and Don Rodriguez, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach.

“Nate has a great idea in helping kids and we support it,” Rodriguez said. “I hope he can get the financial backing to make it a reality.”

Cars and kids aren’t his only passions, though.

Jones also loves horseback riding.

For years, in fact, he had annually herded horses from the grass prairies of Northern Arizona to Sprucedale, a guest ranch in the White Mountains of Eastern Arizona. Until 2014. That year, he rode 100 miles in three days but got worn out. He had a heart attack and needed surgery.

That wasn’t his only health scare. Last year, he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Thankfully, Jones said, he has recovered from that after chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Those health issues have caused Jones to slow down a little — but not much.

“I feel very strongly about helping kids,”Jones said, “and I want to make another push to make it happen while I am still able.”

Jones is a fighter. So if anyone can get that job done, it’s him.

And speaking of getting the job done, Jones is preparing for his other passion: His 49th year as head wrangler in Long Beach, herding IndyCars and other racing vehicles to the starting line.

“Cars and kids,” he said. “I love ‘em.”

News | Thunder Thursday to give a taste of what Grand Prix of Long Beach has to offer

long travel wrangler

Southern California’s high-speed weekend is about to kick off — but before the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach gets officially underway, Thunder Thursday will rev up the party.

The community event, as its name suggests, will take place on the eve of the Grand Prix, offering a free taste of what the city’s “200-mph beach party” has to offer.

Thunder Thursday — organized by Visit Long Beach, otherwise known as the city’s Convention & Visitors Bureau — will take place at the Pike Outlets. The four-hour evening event will feature an NTT IndyCar Series pit stop competition along Shoreline Drive, with four drivers competing for a $10,000 prize, according to a recent news release from the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach.

Those drivers are Penske Chevrolet’s Josef Newgarden, Marcus Armstrong with Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, Santino Ferucci with Foyt Racing Chevrolet and Andretti Global Honda’s Marcus Ericsson.

“The first round will pit Newgarden’s team against Armstrong’s and Ferucci’s team versus Ericsson’s team,” the news release said. “The winners of that round will move on to the finals.”

Thunder Thursday will also delight with two extravagant motocross demonstrations by the Freestyle Kings. There will be a brief show at 6:30 p.m. and a full performance at 7:45 p.m.

The Best Compression Socks For Travel, According To A Podiatrist

The best travel compression socks, also known as flight socks, decrease swelling in your feet and legs to help improve your circulation—and comfort—most effectively during long trips. After analyzing the different options and speaking with New York podiatrist Dr. Nelya Lobkova , DPM, we selected Trtl Compression Socks as the best compression socks for travel overall. For wide calves, we like LevSox Wide Calf Compression Socks and for an affordable pair you can stock up on (and buy on Amazon), Charmking Compression Socks are your best bet.

The best travel compression socks decrease swelling in your feet and legs to help improve your ... [+] comfort during long trips.

Air travel does bring to mind certain health concerns. The changes in pressure create “a higher risk of developing a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs, called a DVT—deep venous thrombosis,” says Lobkova. “Wearing compression socks helps compress the veins and decreases the chance of clot occurring during flight travel.” Ahead, you’ll find our top picks, all approved by Lobkova and broken out with important specs (quick tip: compression socks are measured in mmHg, the same unit as blood pressure) plus buying advice and answers to frequently asked questions at the end.

Lycra adds stretchiness and bounce-back shape retention, and this pair comes in a selection of prints—from chevron to colorful stripes—all while preventing swelling. Sizes: M to XL | Materials: 77% nylon, 23% spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

With a 360-degree woven construction, LevSox’s compression socks are designed to fit wide calves specifically with targeted support, graduated compression and long-lasting comfort, whether you slip them on for a long flight or if you’re standing all day at museums. The nylon blend is lightweight, durable and breathable, and the sizing is specifically designed to prevent that dreaded “too-tight” feeling at the top of the sock. Just be sure to reference their size chart for the best fit.

Best Bamboo Compression Socks For Travel

Soft fabric with naturally breathable comfort.

Ostrichpillow

Ostrichpillow Bamboo Compression Socks

Sizes: S to L | Materials: 50% bamboo, 25% recycled polyester, 10% recycled nylon, 15% spandex Oeko-Tex | Compression level: 8 to 15 mmHg

Ostrichpillow, best known for its inventive travel pillows , stands out from the pack with these light support, bamboo-blend compression socks. With a fabric that naturally encourages air flow—not to mention has antibacterial and odor-resistant qualities—these socks are designed to relieve muscle soreness, improve blood flow and reduce leg and ankle swelling during travel. They have a lighter compression that’s suitable for everyday wear, and with its extra cushioned sole and reinforced heel and toe, you might end up wearing them even when you’re not on a trip.

Best Antimicrobial Compression Socks For Travel

Copper-infused fabric for ultimate protection.

Copper Compression

Copper Compression Powerknit Knee High Socks

Sizes: S to L | Materials: 85% copper-infused nylon, 15% spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

Copper Compression embraces the natural antimicrobial and antibacterial benefits of copper, infusing it into nylon threads, for toe-to-knee protection. These knee-high socks have the ideal compression level for flying, but are also comfortable enough for high-performance activities like running or hiking, without the sweaty feet feeling that can come with strenuous activity. Expect reduced inflammation, extra arch and ankle support (the brand has other arch support products for foot pain and plantar-fasciitis-sufferers, too) and lower lactic acid in your muscles, reducing the chance of stiffness during travel and beyond.

Best Compression Slipper-Socks For Travel

Cozy to wear for long periods and move around in, comrad cozygrip compression slipper socks.

Sizes: S to L | Materials: 82% polyester, 16% nylon, 2% spandex 81% | Compression level: 10 to 15 mmHg

These slipper-socks from Comrad combine a light compression with cozy comfort. The dual-layer design is ideal for times when you want to take your shoes off on the plane or for relaxing in your hotel room after a long day. They provide light support up the leg while silicone grips on the soles protect against sliding on smooth surfaces or slippery floors. This pair is on the lower end of the compression scale, so they might not deliver the same health benefits as some of the higher compression level picks on our list, especially if you have circulation issues.

Best Stylish Compression Socks For Travel

Sleek pair that's effective and good-looking, sockwell moderate graduated compression sock.

Sizes: S/M to M/L | Materials: 32% merino wool, 31% rayon, 32% stretch nylon, 5% spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

Sockwell’s lifestyle compression socks, available in both men’s and women’s sizing, are a far cry from the bland compression stockings of the past. This pair has four strategic zones of graduated compression to minimize swelling during travel and other prolonged sitting activities and a sleek design that comes in beautiful shades. The high-performance merino wool-blend is naturally moisture-wicking, thermoregulating and odor-resistant, too.

Best Ankle Length Compression Socks For Travel

Gentle compression with added foot support, paplus ankle compression socks.

Sizes: S/M to L/XL | Materials: Nylon, spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

For times when full-length compression socks feel too restrictive, a shorter height compression style still offers extra support focused in the ankle and foot area (some reviewers say it even helps with their plantar fasciitis symptoms). Expect a moderate improvement of circulation, reduced swelling and a breathable, moisture-wicking feel, even after a long day of travel. Fit note: Some say these socks run large, especially for those who wear up to a women’s size 7.

Best Open Toe Compression Sock For Travel

No more overheating toes, doc miller open toe compression socks.

Sizes: S to 3XLT | Materials: Nylon, spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

If you like compression socks but don’t enjoy the feeling of constricted toes, consider an open-toe style. Doc Miller’s have graduated compression that extends up to the knee, a smoothing, stretchy nylon-blend fabric that’s thin and easy to pull on, plus an exposed toe for breathable comfort. The inclusive range fits a variety of calf measurements and their tall sizes add an impressive two inches to the length to the standard fit, ensuring a proper fit for just about everyone. If your toes feel cold or you want protection while wearing shoes, simply slip on regular cotton ankle socks for a soft layer that won’t change the compression benefits.

Best Travel Compression Socks Bundle

For bringing multiple pairs on your trip, comrad 3-pack knee high compression socks with packing cube.

Sizes: S to XL, includes wide sizes | Materials: 91% nylon, 9% spandex | Compression level: 15 to 20 mmHg

Comrad created this kit with travelers in mind. It features three pairs of easy-on-off compression socks—with fun ombré designs—and a handy packing cube that fits into your luggage or carry-on. Your feet and legs will feel energizing relief during a flight, and since you can pack multiple pairs, you can still have compression socks left over for sight-seeing and exploring without having to do laundry. FYI: the ripstop nylon packing cube expands to hold up to 10 pairs of compression socks or other undergarments and accessories, as a convenient bonus.

How We Choose Best Compression Socks For Travel

When researching the best compression socks for travel, we considered both large and small brands that specialize in compression products and travel gear. We read through hundreds of real customer reviews, tested some products ourselves and tapped the expertise of board-certified podiatrist Dr. Nelya Lobkova, DPM of Step Up Footcare in New York City about health benefits, sizing and the do’s and don’ts of wearing compression socks for travel. Most of the socks featured here have a compression level of 15 to 20 mmHg, which is the recommended grade for travel.

What To Consider When Shopping For Best Compression Socks For Travel

Not all travel compression socks are alike. There are different styles, levels of compression and sizes. Here’s what to consider as you shop:

  • Fit: The key to compression socks working correctly is a proper fit. If they’re too tight,”they can cause a constriction in circulation to the feet and toes,” says Dr. Lobkova. “This will cause the toes or feet to feel numb and you’ll have the urge to remove them.” Likewise, if your socks are too loose, they won’t provide ideal compression benefits. Pay attention to sizing guides—some socks have gendered sizing or a shoe size equivalency—and calf width. Dr. Lobkova recommends trying on socks or measuring your calf at the end of the day, when swelling is at its highest point. If you have diabetes or peripheral artery disease, your calf circumference can actually vary throughout the day, so Dr. Lobkova suggests “measuring [your calf] when the swelling is the highest, usually with the leg suspended or while standing” to ensure the most accurate measurement for your compression socks.
  • Compression Level: Most compression socks for travel have graduated compression, meaning they’re tighter in the foot, gradually easing up at the top of the sock. Average wearers without any vein issues should aim for a low level of compression for travel, usually in the 15 to 20 mmHg range. “For those with venous insufficiency, a high level of compression—30 to 40 mmHg—is advised,” says Dr. Lobkova.
  • Height: Most compression socks for travel are knee-highs, but there are also quarter- and ankle-length styles available. Shorter socks have focused compression in the foot and ankle areas while the longer styles’ graduated compression extends to right below the knee. Both lengths are designed to help improve circulation during travel, but different wearers might have different preferences for comfort and ease of use. It might be helpful to test a few styles to find the most comfortable and effective height.

Are Flight Socks The Same As Compression Socks?

Yes, flight socks are simply another term for compression socks that are worn during a plane trip. According to Dr. Lobkova, flight socks usually have an average grade of compression in the 15 to 20 mmHg range.

What’s The Best Level Of Compression Socks For Travel?

Experts recommend wearing socks with a compression level of 15 to 20 mmHg during a flight if you don’t have venous insufficiency or varicose veins. For travelers who suffer from those issues, Dr. Lobkova says 30 to 40 mmHg is recommended “in order to deliver effective compression.”

How Long Can You Wear Compression Socks During A Flight?

Compression socks can be worn during any flight, regardless if it’s an intercontinental long-haul or just a couple hours long. It might be easiest to put on your compression socks at the airport gate, before you board the plane, as wrangling into a pair of tight-fitting socks in the cabin could prove to be difficult and disruptive to your neighbors. If your seat has a lay-flat option, however, take off your compression socks before your power nap. “Lying down can constrict blood flow going to the feet and toes,” says Dr. Lobkoba. The goal of wearing compression socks for travel is to improve circulation in your feet and legs, and laying down can have an adverse constriction effect.

How long do tornadoes last? Answering Iowans' common questions about twisters.

long travel wrangler

Iowans are no strangers to tornadoes, and when the threat is present, we understand what our responsibilities are.

Stay informed and stay safe.

But what else do we know about tornadoes?

Severe weather triggered tornadoes in parts of Iowa on April 16, just weeks before May, the month that will have the highest risk for tornadoes in Iowa this year due to a change in weather patterns.

Despite the activity Iowa may see soon, AccuWeather predicts between 1,250 to 1,375 tornadoes across the country this year, less than in 2023.

As tornado season continues, here are common questions about twisters, answered.

How long do tornadoes last?

The average time a tornado is on the ground for is about five minutes, according to NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory , but the time can range from an instant to several hours.

Where do tornadoes occur?

They can occur anywhere in the U.S., according to the National Weather Service . Tornadoes are “most common in the central plains east of the Rocky Mountains and west of the Appalachians.”

Tornado Alley, which covers portions of the Great Plains and Midwest, experiences “a higher propensity for tornadic development” because all the key ingredients to form one are found there, said Justin Glisan, state climatologist of Iowa in an email to the Register

“These include the meeting of cold, drier air from Canada and warm, moist air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico,” he said.

Why don’t tornadoes hit major cities?

Actually, they can and have. In fact, tornadoes can hit anywhere, and it’s a misconception that metropolitan areas are not impacted by it, Glisan said.

It’s all about probability, according to the Weather Channel . A majority of Iowa’s counties are considered rural or micropolitan , according to a 2023 report from Iowa State University’s Extension and Outreach. Rural counties are those without a city of 10,000 or more while micropolitan counties have a city of at least 10,000 people, but less than 50,000.

How many tornadoes occurred in Iowa in 2023?

In 2023, Iowa experienced 72 tornadoes, NWS meteorologist Allan Curtis confirmed with the Des Moines Register in an email.

  • In 2022, Iowa experienced 42 tornadoes
  • In 2021, Iowa experienced 114 tornadoes

Database: See the tornadoes in Iowa since 1950

How fast can tornadoes travel?

A typical tornado travels at around 10-20 miles per hour, according to NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory. Tornadoes can be almost stationary to moving more than 60 mph.

Can tornadoes happen at night?

Yes. Tornadoes can occur at any time of day, but most occur from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., USA TODAY reported in 2022.

Malibu’s Most Exclusive, Butt-Kicking Spa Is Coming East

The Ranch, which specializes in long hikes, communal vegan meals and snacks of precisely six almonds, is opening an outpost in the Hudson Valley.

Seen from the air, a large stone manor house sits on a lawn bordered by large trees with a lake in the background and mountains beyond.

By Danielle Pergament

You will wake up at 5:30 a.m. and stretch for 30 minutes. You will eat something vegan and organic for breakfast followed by an hourslong hike on which you will hear words like “verticality.” If you need a snack, you will get six almonds. Not seven — don’t be gluttonous.

In the afternoon, you will take a cold plunge, dunking yourself in water cooled to a painful 55 degrees. The throbbing in your body is not a hangover — there is no alcohol — it’s from the 10 miles you hiked yesterday, or it could be the 12 you hiked the day before. Or maybe it’s the 1,400 calories a day allotted. For all this, you will pay thousands of dollars.

This is luxury wellness in 2024. Some destination spas and high-end retreats are more akin to Navy SEAL prep — or at the very least, basic training — than five-star resorts.

The standard-bearer of this group is the Ranch, 200 acres of nature and trails in the Santa Monica Mountains of Malibu, Calif. For 14 years, the Ranch has been helping 25 people at a time destress, detox and generally rid themselves of the anxieties of life.

“It’s not like any other place,” said Gillian Steel, 69, who sits on the board of the New-York Historical Society and has been to the Ranch nine times. The Ranch, she said, “isn’t just a week-away experience. They manage to be both stylish while pushing you. You meet the most interesting people and get a week to yourself at the same time.”

In late April, the Ranch will open a second property, this time in the Hudson Valley of New York.

“For years, our guests kept saying, ‘Please open something on the East Coast,’” said Sue Glasscock, who owns the Ranch with her husband, Alex, both 60. “We kicked the idea around for a long time.”

They eventually found a lakeside estate on 200 acres of forests and trails flanked by state parks near the New Jersey border in the town of Sloatsburg, N.Y. The house, a 40,000-square-foot stone mansion previously known as Table Rock estate, was built in 1902 by J.P. Morgan. (It was a wedding present to his daughter and new son-in-law, the great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton, and was later owned by an order of nuns .)

“It’s an hour from Manhattan, which is just crazy to me,” said Ms. Glasscock.

To the mountains

I met the Glasscocks for lunch at their home at the Ranch Malibu. In the foreground, three bowls of warm cabbage soup, topped with crispy kale and microgreens. In the background was the entirety of the Santa Monica Mountains, and just beyond, a glimmering streak of the Pacific. It was hard not to feel healthier, calmer and more sustainable just being there.

“We don’t think of ourselves as a spa — we never have,” said Mr. Glasscock. “To be honest, I don’t like the word wellness.” Before opening the Ranch, the couple bought and remodeled houses and designed gardens.

The natural world — both in Southern California and the Hudson Valley — is the most important amenity at the Ranch. “Nothing we do is trendy,” said Ms. Glasscock. “The point is that you’re in nature. You’re eating food from the garden, you’re drinking more water, you’re sleeping more, you’re taking time off your devices. And you’re playing.”

Play, she said, is a proven aid to longevity and something adults don’t do enough. At the new location, a hill in the backyard will give guests a chance to go sledding in the winter. “The Ranch is basically like camp for grown-ups,” she said.

But grown-up camp doesn’t come cheap. The Ranch Malibu has a six-night, seven-day minimum and can cost more than $9,000 a week, depending on the package. The price of a stay at the Ranch Hudson Valley will range from $2,575 per person (three nights, double occupancy, low season) to $6,900 per person (four nights, single occupancy, high season). With high prices comes exclusivity.

“It’s hard,” said Mr. Glasscock. Part of the impetus for opening in the Hudson Valley, he said, was to give people the option to come for three days. “Obviously, that lowers the cost, and still gives people time to reconnect to nature.”

From weight loss to longevity

As wellness has gone mainstream, places like the Ranch have played a pivotal role in changing the definition of destination spas.

“In the U.S. in the last 10 or 20 years, destination spas were focused on weight loss and fixing bad habits like alcohol, coffee, smoking and eating too much meat and sugar,” said Linda Wells, the founding editor of Allure magazine and the editor of Air Mail Look , a beauty and wellness newsletter (to which I have contributed). “But the experience boiled down to getting weighed and measured on Day 1 and again on departure day, with a report card of pounds and inches lost at the end. Weight loss and flat abs were the goal, not health — and definitely not longevity.”

But wellness evolved. Even in light of recent controversies , one of the most popular podcasts on Spotify is still “Huberman Lab,” in which a Stanford University neurobiologist discusses cold exposure, sleep hygiene and circadian rhythms. And an increasing number of spas offer an array of high-tech, often medicalized programs .

Other pricey destination spas also take the boot camp approach. There is Golden Door in California, Mii Amo in Arizona, and Miraval and Canyon Ranch , both of which have several outposts. All of these combine spa treatments, exercise programs, special diets and the promise of resetting to a healthier lifestyle. But the Ranch is singular in its simplicity. There are vegan cooking classes, energy healing sessions and infrared saunas, but don’t expect Botox or filler injections.

“I’m not against those things,” said Ms. Glasscock. “It’s just not in our ethos.”

The Ranch is also extremely luxurious and deliberately communal. Arrival and departure dates are set according to weekly packages, so guests see the same faces for a week. Activities — including the daily hikes — are done as a group. And there is only one dining table, so you eat all meals with the rest of the guests.

“I was expecting meditation, heads down, keep to yourself, but it’s not that at all,” said Jillian Spaak, the director of a real estate investment company who lives in Southern California and first went to the Ranch 10 years ago when she was getting divorced. “You’re communing with other people, you’re hiking together, and you’re all eating meals at the same table. You go through peaks and valleys — literally — and you’re all there for the same reason: to feel better, to look better, to be better. ”

“We want to take what we consider the important aspects of health, wellness and longevity and immerse everyone in all of them for a week or three days,” said Ms. Glasscock. “Most people want a silver bullet, but there is no such thing.”

FAA lifts temporary ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after technical issue is resolved

Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 airliners sit on the tarmac

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights Wednesday after grounding the planes earlier as a result of a computer problem at the carrier.

The Seattle-based airline said in a statement that an issue arose “while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance.”

The FAA initially approved a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights starting at approximately 10:50 a.m. ET.

It was lifted just before 11:45 a.m. ET.

It wasn't immediately clear how many flights were affected. An Alaska spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Want to work remotely in Italy? The country just launched its new digital nomad visa.

long travel wrangler

Remote workers with dreams of working from the rolling hills of Tuscany or the cliffs of Positano are now one step closer to making that reality. Italy launched a new digital nomad visa.

Two years after its announcement, the highly anticipated digital nomad visa officially became available for those eligible on April 4.

“Italian-style, everything happens slowly,” said Nick Metta, a lawyer for the law firm Studio Legale Metta, which has helped Americans relocate to Italy for decades. “Now there is a pipeline of people waiting just to file the application. It's been a long-awaited visa.”

Most of Metta’s clients would previously apply for a student visa, which allowed them to work part-time in Italy.

Under the new visa, people will be able to work from Italy for one year, with the option to renew once their visa is due for expiration. Without a visa, U.S. travelers could only stay in Italy for up to 90 days without the ability to work.

The launch makes Italy the latest European country to offer a digital nomad visa , which has already been available in Greece and Hungary.

Here’s everything we know about the digital nomad visa for Italy.

Destinations behind a paywall? What to know about the increasing tourist fees worldwide.

Who can apply for a digital nomad visa in Italy?

According to the official decree , the visa is meant for those who “carry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow you to work remotely.”

The regulations define eligible applicants as “digital nomads,” self-employed freelancers, “remote workers,” or those employed by a company outside of Italy and can work from anywhere, according to Studio Legale Metta.

To qualify for the visa, the applicant has to meet certain requirements:

  • A university or college degree or an accredited professional license
  • Six months of work experience in the industry, or five years for applicants without a university degree
  • An existing employment contract
  • A criminal record check
  • Proof of an annual income of €28,000 (about $29,880.06)
  • Evidence of housing in Italy
  • Evidence of health insurance coverage

Applicants can also apply to have family members join them on their Italian move, but the government has to give the final approval.

How do I apply for the digital nomad visa in Italy?

Thankfully, Metta said the paperwork for the digital nomad visa isn’t “too complicated.”

The first stop for interested applicants will be the Italian Consulate for their area. “Consulates are basically the front of the government to receive the applications,” Metta said. Interested applicants can book an appointment with the consulate and start gathering their necessary documents. People can also apply by mailing in their application. (However, Metta did mention consulate websites are often confusing and outdated, so working with a relocation service can make things easier.)

To apply, applicants will also need a passport with an expiration date at least three months after the end of the visa period and two passport-sized photos.

Relocation services can also help people navigate the sometimes complicated process of applying for a visa, such as negotiating early termination penalties with landlords in Italy.

These services also help people with state and tax planning, especially if people own assets in the U.S., like a house. Once in Italy, people need to register their residency with the town hall, which will determine what sort of taxes they’ll pay. People can speak to an international tax specialist to figure out their future taxes as well.

How much will the visa cost?

According to Metta Studio Legale, the application fee is €116 (about $123.78) per person.

How long will the application process take?

Not too long, actually. Metta estimates the process could take just three weeks if applicants are “well-organized and have all your tax documents filed.”
