Between the hype surrounding the cruise industry's restart and the fanfare given to new ships that are finally having their moment in the spotlight -- uhem Celebrity Apex , uhem Scarlet Lady -- we sometimes forget that there are existing ships just as worthy of a mention.

One of those is Majestic Princess , a vessel that debuted in Shanghai in 2017 as part of Princess Cruises ' Royal Class. It was built explicitly for the Chinese market and later shifted to sail from Australia. But with both countries currently closed to cruising, the ship has relocated to North America, sailing a series of Alaska summer voyages and California coastal and Mexican Riviera cruises in winter through 2023.

What's interesting about the ship -- besides the fact that it's finally offering often-overlooked passengers on the U.S. West Coast a new-hardware option -- is that it retains several of the onboard offerings initially intended for the Asian market. Here, I'll tell you all about them and call out a few of the features that have been removed since the ship left China.

Fun features on Majestic Princess

Hollywood Conservatory: Instead of the extra-charge, adults-only Serenity sun deck found on other Princess ships, Majestic Princess is home to the complimentary Hollywood Conservatory. This is a light and airy but shaded observation deck at the very front of Deck 17. From its perch, it offers sweeping sea views with plenty of seating, including private alcoves.

The space also features whimsical faux topiaries of chess pieces (complemented by a giant chessboard) and a dancing family (ironic, as children aren't allowed there). There are also several large xylophones scattered throughout for passengers to play. Their purpose isn't entirely clear, but they do create an air of mystery.

Harmony: This $29-per-person Chinese restaurant originally offered items like jellyfish, abalone and beef tendon. It has since been tweaked for North American palates and now includes items like gourmet crab rangoons, shrimp spring rolls and General Tso's chicken. I ate there for dinner, and it was one of the best meals I had onboard.

The restaurant takes up real estate occupied by Sabatini's Italian eatery on other vessels in the fleet, but fear not: You can get your Italian carb fix at Alfredo's, which serves up delicious free pizza.

VIP Gaming: Because the Chinese market tends toward casino play, there are two casinos onboard. The secondary one, dubbed VIP Gaming, has a small selection of tables for gambling. However, I never actually saw it in use on my sailing, and the space mainly functioned as a bar and lounge area.

Outfitted with comfy seating and a wall full of TVs, the area, adjacent to the Grand Casino, is the ideal outpost for taking advantage of the line's recently announced live sports betting offerings. (Passengers can play casino games and place sports match wagers via the MedallionClass app.)

Additional shopping: All Princess ships have onboard shops, where passengers can buy everything from sundries and logo items to jewelry and purses. But to cater to the Chinese market, Majestic Princess was outfitted with additional retail therapy locations.

Big names abound, including Coach, Bulgari and Cartier -- all of which have dedicated stores -- as well as shops that sell Burberry, Gucci, Lacoste, Ferragamo, Ray-Ban, Prada and more.

Fun features removed from Majestic Princess

Sing on the Sea: A series of dedicated private karaoke suites, collectively called Sing on the Sea, was designed specifically for Chinese passengers.

Since Majestic Princess relocated, they have been replaced; the rooms have been converted into extra spa treatment rooms.

Gong Cha Cafe: Gong Cha Cafe -- located next to entertainment venue Princess Live!, which frequently hosts game shows and trivia -- was a bar that specialized in bubble tea through a partnership with China's land-based Gong Cha.

The enclave is still there, but following the ship's relocation, the cafe was renamed the Princess Live! Cafe, in line with other ships in the fleet. It now serves a variety of coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages. Bubble tea is no longer on the menu.

Tea library: Next to the Deck 5 Piazza's International Cafe, passengers will spot a couple of wooden towers that look like card catalogs from a library. In the vessel's former life, these kiosks held an impressive selection of tea from which passengers were able to choose.

Although they still stand proud, they're empty, and Princess currently has no plans to refill them.

Comprehensive Photo Tour of the Majestic Princess

I just finished a week onboard princess cruises majestic princess. here’s my comprehensive tour of her..

I recently spent a week on the Majestic Princess and I took this opportunity to document the ship. The Majestic is a member of the Royal class of ships for Princess Cruises. These are a unique design that is only shared with their sibling company P&O. Other ships of this design are the Royal Princess, Regal Princess, Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess, Discovery Princess, and P&O’s Britannia. All of these are built at Fincantieri with the Majestic Princess being delivered in 2017. What makes the Majestic unique was that it was designed specifically for cruising year-round in China. Throughout the photos below, pay attention to the signage in rooms as there are Chinese characters below each sign. Also as the demographic in Asia is quite different, there were some changes that I’ll note throughout our tour of the vessel.

As per usual, we start with the obligatory photos to give us an idea of the ship.

Now let’s begin the tour.

Deck 4 contains the boarding areas for the tenders as well as the medical center.

Deck 5 is where the public areas start. At the forward end of the deck is the Lotus Spa, and beauty salon. When the ship sailed in Asia, there were also several Karaoke booths here.

Walking past that is the passenger services desk as well as the Shore Excursion desk.

Off of this area is where the Harmony Chinese restaurant is located. This is a venue that unique to only Majestic. On other Royal-class ships, this would be where Sabatini’s is (there’s currently no Sabatini’s on Majestic.)

Walking aft of there you emerge at the bottom floor of the three-deck tall Piazza. This is the central focus point of the vessel with many public areas branching off of here.

On the bottom level, there are Vines the wine bar, and shops just past it. At the end of the shops is the future cruise center.

On the port side, there’s the international café where you can get complimentary pastries, cookies, and sandwiches. You can also purchase gourmet coffees here. (As I type this I am having an espresso from there.)

Past the Piazza is one of the three main dining rooms onboard. Here it’s the Symphony Dining Room.

Deck 6 starts with the bottom floor of the Princess Theater.

Past that is the casino. This was split into two areas with a VIP section separate on port. However, now it’s been converted to the Double Down sports bar.

Just past that you emerge at the second deck to the Piazza. The bar in this area has been renamed to the Good Spirits bar (deck plans show Bellini’s). During the evenings they have an interactive segment where they highlight some of the specialty drinks and go into how it’s made.

On the starboard side is Alfredo’s Pizzeria (which has much more than just pizza.)

On the port side is the photo gallery as well as the internet café. There is also the fine art gallery just past that.

Then past that is the second dining room, Concerto Dining Room.

At the very end of the desk is the last dining room, Allegro Dining Room. This is also where the Chef’s Table Lumiere is located. This area is only accessible from the deck above via the third (aft) stairwell

Deck 7 has the upper level of the Princess Theater. Though in reality, there’s not a balcony or anything. It’s just one long gradual slope.

Past the theater is the Shops of Princess. Once again as this was designed for the Asian market, it features extremely high-end boutiques.

Past that you emerge at the top level of the Piazza. At the front section is the Ocean Terrace bar. This has gone through several venue changes starting out as a sushi bar originally, then going to a Juice bar. Now it’s the best Martini bar onboard.

On the port side is the La Mer French Bistro.

The deck continues down the starboard side. There’s an area where you can purchase accessories for your Princess Medallion. (I picked up a wrist strap. That way I can wear it just like a watch). There’s also the Princess Live bar. This was once a tea bar.

Right next to it is the Princess Live! Theater.

Past that you enter Crown Grill and Bar. This dark wood area resembles a classic, high-end steakhouse. The bar here is your best bet on Whiskeys and Scotches.

Past that is the Library which also serves as the location for the loyalty concierge.

At the very end is the Vista lounge with is the alternate lounge.

A quick note on Deck 7. There are several outdoor areas here. This is the closest you can get to the water. I recommend the aft sections as they’re wider and have these amazing chairs. Be mindful though, it tends to be a smokers area.

Majestic Princess cabins with balconies are 1438 (80% of all staterooms). Wheelchair accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) are 36 (of which 29 balconies, 7 insides). The number of all cabin categories is 38. Just like the sister ships and NCL Epic , the Majestic Princess ship lacks Oceanview cabins (has no outside staterooms with Picture- or Porthole windows).

All Majestic Princess Suites are with a private balcony, walk-in closet (ample storage space), living room (sofa bed, desk, vanity, table, armchairs), bathroom (WC, shower, whirlpool bathtub, double sinks, marble countertops and floors). Club Class Dining includes a separate area part of the MDR (main dining room) reserved for Club Suite guests only. Club Class Dining is available for breakfast and dinner every day, and also for lunch on sea days only. The new suites replaced some existing mini-suites.
