Manchester United staff ‘dismayed’ as club scrap free travel and food for FA Cup final
Share this with
Manchester United staff have reportedly been left ‘dismayed’ after INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting saw the removal of employee perks for the upcoming FA Cup final.
Erik ten Hag ’s side threatened a historic collapse against Coventry City after squandering a 3-0 lead against the Championship side in normal time but eked through to next month’s final after a penalty shootout victory.
United will face rivals Manchester City in the showpiece event for a second successive season but the occasion will be markedly different for the club’s staff after a decision from the club’s new co-owners.
In the past, staff members had received multiple tickets for friends and family which also came with free transport to the game.
Club directors were also treated to a pre-match meal as well as a party and accommodation in London following the fixture.
However, according to The Times, those benefits have now been scrapped, with all staff members and directors now gifted just one ticket and required to pay for their own transport – a £20 return fare for a coach to Wembley.
It marks the latest in a number of cost-cutting measures from INEOS as they look to curb expenses and help United, who spent £183.5 million on new signings last summer , comply with profit and sustainability rules.
Earlier in the month, the club removed company credit cards for some senior figures while also scaling back the use of private chauffeurs for some of the backroom staff.
In an email announcing the latest changes, which has been seen by the Times, the club noted that this year’s Wembley trip would ‘be a little different’.
‘We will still provide you with a complimentary ticket to the game. However, we’ll ask you to contribute towards coach travel, and lunch will not be provided,’ the email continued.
‘While we appreciate this is a change from previous trips, you will all be aware of the need for us to spend the club’s money effectively, with a focus on performance and outcomes.
‘We hope that this year’s trip balances the opportunity for you to go to Wembley to support our players while also ensuring we can invest as much as possible into the club over the coming months to achieve our goal of returning Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football.’

Manchester United set up another FA Cup final against fierce rival Manchester City in a way no one could ever have imagined.
In a semifinal match on Sunday that will live long in the memory, United blew a three-goal lead against second-tier Coventry, was saved by the narrowest of offside calls by the VAR in stoppage time of extra time to keep the score at 3-3, then came from behind in a penalty shootout to advance to the May 25 title match back at Wembley Stadium.
United’s celebrations after Rasmus Hojlund converted the clinching spot kick for a 4-2 win in the shootout were as much of relief as joy. Indeed, United’s players looked sheepish — almost embarrassed — as they left the field at England’s national stadium compared to their Coventry counterparts, who received the adulation of their proud, flag-waving, blue-clad fans.
Advancing to the final in this manner will do nothing to quell the growing uncertainty around the position of United manager Erik ten Hag, whose job might not be saved even by beating City. United, the grandest club in England, is languishing in seventh place in the Premier League and the team’s late collapse against Coventry followed a trend of similar performances in recent weeks that will alarm its new co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who was in the crowd at Wembley after having run the London Marathon.
“The standard of the club is much higher than what we have been doing,” said United captain Bruno Fernandes, who could barely raise a smile despite his team getting to an FA Cup final.
City, which defeated Chelsea 1-0 in the first of the semifinals on Saturday, was a 2-1 winner over United in last year’s final on its way to claiming a Premier League-FA Cup-Champions League treble.
That was the first ever cup final between the fierce local rivals — and another has arrived 12 months later. Few will expect a different outcome in next month’s match, by which time City will hope to have been crowned Premier League champion again.
“It’s mixed feelings,” Ten Hag said of beating Coventry. “The way we did it isn’t OK.”
United has picked up a nasty habit of blowing leads and it happened again against an inspired Coventry team that is eighth in the Championship and managed by Mark Robins — a former Man United striker who might have saved Alex Ferguson from getting fired three years into his storied tenure as United manager.
Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes — with a shot that took a deflection before ricocheting into the net — scored to put United 3-0 up by the 58th minute.
Coventry, which was bidding to become the first non-Premier League club since Cardiff in 2008 to reach the final, fought back in remarkable fashion with goals from Ellis Sims in the 71st, Callum O’Hare in the 79th and then Haji Wright with an equalizing penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
Coventry was arguably the stronger of the teams in extra time, with Sims hitting the crossbar and Victor Torp having a goal in the first minute of second-half stoppage time ruled out because of a close offside call against Wright in the buildup.
“Had he cut his toe nail, it wouldn’t have gone to penalties,” Robins said.
United midfielder Casemiro, who played out of position at center back in the match, missed the first penalty of the shootout but United recovered, with Coventry failing twice from the spot.
LIVERPOOL WINS
Liverpool stayed competitive in the Premier League title race with a 3-1 win at Fulham that was illuminated by a stunning free kick by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota also scored for Liverpool, which moved level on points with leader Arsenal in the standings but has an inferior goal difference. They are one point ahead of Manchester City, which has a game in hand.
In other Premier League games, there were significant wins for Aston Villa and Everton, and a huge win for Crystal Palace .
Villa rallied to beat Bournemouth 3-1 and strengthen its bid for Champions League qualification. Unai Emery’s team stayed in fourth place but moved six points clear of fifth-place Tottenham, which has two games in hand.
Everton defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 to push five points clear of the relegation zone and boost its chances of extending its 70-year stay in the top flight. Forest published a social-media post after the game which appeared to question the integrity of a match official.
Palace scored four goals in the first 31 minutes on the way to a 5-2 win over West Ham.

What We Learned From Manchester United’s Trip To Moscow
Sadly, unlike 2008, Manchester United weren’t in Moscow to play a UEFA Champions League final. They’re still some way off that point yet but tonight Jose Mourinho’s men got three points as they push towards the last sixteen of the competition.
Winning away from home in Europe is always huge. It’s not easy travelling these distances (especially Russia) in-between important league games. The foreign clubs probably don’t feel it as much after Christmas when games in Europe lessen and they’ve endured a winter break whereas footballers in England can only dream.
CSKA were wretched, but United were very impressive in parts. The Russian outfit were torn to pieces.
Romelu Lukaku is a goal machine
Ten goals in nine games. Lukaku has been an incredible signing for Jose Mourinho and there has only been one game (Leicester City) this season that he’s not found the back of the net. What a record to take with you into the month of October with the Belgium international eyeing individual awards for his goalscoring.
Lukaku scored the opener tonight against CSKA Moscow after Anthony Martial’s cross found the United striker at the far post. He proved too much for the home side’s defence to deal with while Henrikh Mkhitaryan pulled the strings and Martial frightening them with pace.
Aside from scoring goals, which is Lukaku’s main priority, he was also back making tackles in the left-back position with his side 4-0 up. Mourinho really has this team playing with incredible intensity.
The fourth signing that never happened
It was no secret during the summer that Mourinho wanted a fourth signing to provide more natural width and ease crossing concerns. Now this team has scored 10 goals from crosses this season.
Martial provided two crosses that resulted in goals tonight but other than the former Monaco attacker, who else can United call upon when it comes to natural width? Ashley Young recently returned to the team and has offered exactly that.
Young captained United tonight and while none of his crosses will make the headlines like those of Martial, he’s a player that could aid Lukaku with an additional 10+ goals this season granted he stays fit.
United facing early qualification
I have seen nothing to suggest United will have a difficult night in Group B. Benfica haven’t even one point after two games, and they’ve beaten the other two teams (FC Basel & CSKA Moscow).
United could, without question, go through the entire group stage with a 100% record.
Mourinho’s side are beating teams in Europe without key players and are doing so convincingly. Tonight’s win especially had real substance.

Matchday: Man United v CSKA Moscow
- December 6th, 2017

They say at Old Trafford it’s all about product placement, matchday scarves and ticket touts. Outside on the night, the shadow of the Munich ’58 disaster pervades but in truth what is the most telling is the number of people heading out of the megastore with shopping bags. Milling around beside the shop and nearby towering stands there are legions of visiting students from as far-flung as Taiwan, Nigeria and Japan queuing up to get their photo taken outside the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand – iPhone in hand. Many of them most probably wondering where the statue of David Beckham stands.
That’s right, its UEFA Champions league night and Old Trafford is the land of the selfie – welcome to modern football .
This seasons Champions League has been like, well, just any other recent Champions League season. Apart from the arrival on the scene of Qarabag, Maribor and APOEL, Manchester United have played Benfica and FC Basel (again). Meanwhile, a host of the smaller qualifying clubs have taken almighty thumpings from the bigger sides.
The divide between the big boys and the smaller sides has never been more telling despite the riches on offer. Glasgow Celtic have conceded a massive 12 goals to PSG over just two games while the aforementioned Qarabag from Azerbaijan, Maribor and APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus have all been on the receiving end of 0-6 or 0-7 thumpings at home.
This the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League is the 63rd season of Europe’s premier club football tournament organised by UEFA. It is the 26th season since it was renamed from the former Champion Clubs’ Cup and turned into the heavily sponsored and media laden UEFA Champions League.
A total of 79 teams from 54 of the 55 UEFA member associations participate in this seasons tournament with the only exception being the absence of any team from Lichtenstein which does not organise a domestic football league. Since the minnows of Vikingur Gota of the Faroe Islands defeated Kosovans Trepca ’89 back in July a vast amount of football has been played with an even bigger money pot divided up amongst the competitors.
But with the participation cheques long since in the post for the early round exiting minnows, it is at this the ‘Group Stage’ of the Champions League that the serious income streams kick in. An announcement was made at the draw event at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco that the earning potential for successful clubs will go on even after the competition has ended. The winners of the 2017–18 UEFA Champions League will qualify as the UEFA representative at the 2018 FIFA Club World Cup to be held in the U.A.E and they will also earn the right to play against the Europa League winners in the 2018 Super Cup.
With the spectre of the Malcolm Glazer leveraged investment vehicle still hovering overhead (an ownership model that has spawned the growth of the alternative fan-focused FC United of Manchester ) the finances at United look positive in this post-Sir Alex Ferguson era at least on paper. Now with Jose Mourinho in charge of team affairs, the 2016-17 season saw the club win three trophies including the UEFA Europa League which secured a return to Champions League football.
Season (2016-17) was one that saw the club set record income revenue totals of over £581m for the Twelve months ended 30 June 2017. Amongst that figure includes startingly mind-boggling figures of sponsorship revenue (£162.3 million). Also Retail, Merchandising, Apparel & Product Licensing revenues (£104.0 million) that largely came thanks to a full year financial contribution from an Adidas match kit agreement.
Tellingly, broadcasting revenue income for the year ended June 2017 was totalled at £194.1 million, an increase of £53.7 million over the previous year. This primarily, it would seem, came due to the new improved Premier League broadcasting rights agreement plus progression to the UEFA Europa League final which was won against Ajax.
Curiously, despite a near on 80,000 seater stadium (that the club hopes to extend again with more seats) matchday revenue for the year came to only £111.6 million, an increase of £5.0 million, or 4.7%, over the prior year. This primarily only came thanks to playing two more home games in the year compared to the previous season.
So, bearing in mind the US-backed investment model that served to take on the club and the vast wage demands of the superstars who play for them (including Zlatan Ibrahimovic who is on a whopping £367,640 a week) what is going out money wise?
Again the latest financial documents show total operating expenses for the year at £511.3 million, with an increase of £74.7 million in expenses, or 17.1%, over the prior year.
Still in operating profit mind you.
What the fans make of the financial workings is all a bit unclear and many of the current fan-base will not care essentially as lots of them (whether they like it or not) are glory hunters seduced by success and the global brand. Some of the more traditional United fans expressed feelings towards the current Manchester United business model via the formation of the newer FC United of Manchester club . Moreover, a season or two ago the ‘green and yellow’ protest movement took root at Old Trafford. But in all truth, this protest movement (if it could be called that) seems to have faded into the background visually since Sir Alex Ferguson retired or as some would tell you – they have been forced out thanks to robust stewarding.
Amongst the media meanwhile questions have been raised about the state of Manchester United off the pitch. Old Trafford has fallen behind other stadia in England never mind Europe. Any efforts at further extending the seating capacity are made with revenue generation in mind rather than in the interests of long-term strategic planning.
Come match day Old Trafford is a stadium that can sell seats like cream cakes to fans. Do you want a match programme for £3.50? You got one. Throw in another special magazine and make it £6! Need a replica shirt – there are about 4 to choose from including Adidas originals retro shirts and training shirts. From impressionable youngsters sucked in by trophy success to the visiting foreign students who want to get a selfie with Ibrahimovic off the team coach, the stadium serves as a cash cow for so many people making Old Trafford more the Theatre of Schemes than the Theatre of Dreams .
You only have to walk around the stadium on match night to see countless catering outlets and numerous scarf sellers making a fortune from products whether burgers or knocked off replica merchandise. Ticket touts meanwhile linger outside the metro link and chip van owners are looking for another customer.
The city of Manchester had been grey for most the day and what is more, it was cold. Even the hundreds of Moscovites who had travelled to Manchester in order to support CSKA were wrapped up in scarves, jackets and hats. As it turned out Manchester United eventually got over the line and into the knockout stages with a slender 2-1 win. While player form at the club is good and confidence is high, it would appear that this is not a United side as strong as the clear favourites for this year’s tournament; namely PSG, Real Bayern and Barcelona.
On the night United had to come from behind to secure their place in the last 16 of the competition – the first time they have progressed this far since the ill-fated reign of David Moyes in 2014. The victory at Old Trafford also ensured Mourinho’s team finished above second-placed FC Basel in Group A with a haul of 15 points from six games.
The opening goal was somewhat controversial due to the offside rule. The powerful Russian side had taken the lead with a goal on the stroke of half-time as the Brazilian Vitinho’s shot was diverted into the net by Russian international forward Alan Dzagoev. Shaw had allowed Mario Fernandes burst into the box where he picked out Vitinho who then finished. United’s defenders had called for an offside flag to be raised but replays suggested the officials made the right decision because Daley Blind was deemed to be active (he left the field of play injured without the referees’ permission) and thus had played CSKA onside.
However, United’s reply to that shock opener after the half-time whistle was formidable. The Belgian Lukaku stretched out a long leg to poke home his 13th of the season from Pogba’s pass after 63 minutes. Marcus Rashford then stroked in the winner just 2 minutes later.
Only a number of saves from Akinfeev prevented another United goal.
Impressive for United were Lukaku and Shaw. Off the field, while it is easy to poke fun at the circus that is Manchester United’s all-pervading merchandising wing most impressive was the matchday ‘United Review’ programme on sale at only £3.50.
Across in the away area, it was the fans of CSKA who made most of the noise in the opening period. Many bare-chested and led by a vocal capo its travelling fan base had mingled in the city before the game with some fans of Spartak Moscow also in England thanks to a Champions League tie against Liverpool the next day.
CSKA Moscow , thanks to this defeat, will now play in the Europa League knockout stages. This is a competition they have previously won when a victorious team that included Vagner Love took the trophy back to Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin. Alongside the other recently departed teams from the Champions League tournament (which this season includes Atletico Madrid), the Russian side can rightly call themselves one of the favourites for UEFA’s secondary tournament thanks to a blend of experience and the best young Russian players.
And in the year of the 2018 Russian World Cup, who is to say that it won’t be CSKA who come May win the UEFA Europa League?

United will cover visa costs for fans travelling to Moscow
Reading time: minutes
The Premier League side will be travelling to Russia on September 27 and supporters have had to make quick arrangements to plan the trip, but United have promised to pay charges of up to £118.20 to cover fans' visas who are going to the game.
Jose Mourinho's side offered the same service for last season's Europa League last 16 clash with Rostov.
The Russian Embassy now has an office in Manchester, making it easy for fans to process their own documentation.
Fans have been told to supply the club with a receipt after completing the visa application, which will then be reimbursed.
"It is great to see Manchester United supporting our travelling fans in Europe by covering the costs of Russian visas for the CSKA Moscow away game.
"This comes following requests from M.U.S.T - the Manchester United Supporters Trust. M.U.S.T has consistently lobbied the club for greater support for our fans, both at home and away.
"Recent wins this season include more discounted youth season tickets being made available around the ground and also cheaper League Cup tickets.
"Previously our discussion have also resulted in visa fees being covered for the last Russian away match in Rostov as well as laying on free coaches at European away games and to domestic finals and semi-finals at Wembley too.
"We don't get everything we request, of course, but we do see this as welcome progress in building a co-operative relationship between the Club and the Supporters' Trust."
238 fans made the trip to Rostov in March for the 1-1, but the allocation for Moscow is not yet confirmed.
"As there is adequate time in advance of the game, this maximum includes a £70 single five-working day application fee, £38.40 5-working day service charge and £9.80 postage fee.
"To receive your passport back from the Visa Application Centre, we are aware that you must return your receipt.
"As we will require your receipt from the purchase of your visa in order to issue you with a refund, please make a copy of this before exchanging it for your passport."

The FA Cup final between Manchester City and Manchester United will kick off at the traditional time of 3 p.m. (1400 GMT) on May 25, the Football Association said Tuesday.
In a repeat of last year’s final, holder City will play rival United at Wembley Stadium.
The FA said the kickoff time had been agreed with both clubs, the local authority, safety advisory group and broadcasters.
It is the second straight year that the final will start at 3 p.m. In recent years it has had an early evening time slot.
City beat Chelsea 1-0 on Saturday to secure its place in the final, while United needed penalties to overcome second-tier Coventry on Sunday after blowing a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 through extra time.
As well as the Cup, the winner will receive around $2.5 million.

‘Real deal’ Robins relies on Sky Blues thinking for reunion with United
Coventry fans will travel in numbers for their FA Cup semi-final on Sunday – a reflection of their long-serving manager’s impact
W hen Jürgen Klopp announced in January he would leave Liverpool at the end of the season, it was not just the news itself that seemed strange. The shock, the communal widening of the eyes, was in part because, with the shelf life of managers shorter than ever, rarely does anyone go on their own terms.
Since Klopp informed the Liverpool hierarchy last November of his intention to step down, 27 managers in the top four divisions – almost one third of those employed – have been dismissed. At eight and a half years Klopp has worked unbroken in the Premier League or EFL for longer than any other current manager and the heir to that throne, Pep Guardiola, reached a similar untouchable point some time ago.
The same goes for Mark Robins, the 54-year-old who ranks third on the list. Last month Robins celebrated seven years in his second spell at Coventry City, marking the anniversary by teeing up Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against his former club Manchester United , and there is a reason why supporters speak of him, as they do Klopp and Guardiola, in a godly light. Robins’ staying power is even more admirable given the challenges he has overcome, the battles he has won.
His success is a victory for longevity and stability, two fingers to short-termism and the volatility that stalks the game. Last year Michael Doyle, whom Robins made his first signing and captain on his return in 2017, suggested the achievements were statue-worthy, but since then Robins has led the team to within a penalty shootout of the Premier League and now there is another Wembley trip to relish.
Coventry, again, will travel in numbers and a glance at their attendances captures the transformation under Robins. He led the club out of League Two at the first attempt and has restored pride in a club bruised by off-field trauma: despised owners, groundshares and broken relationships. Dave Boddy, the former chief executive who until leaving in January had been on the journey every step of the way, remembers when the visits of Carlisle and Cambridge in 2017-18 saw little more than 6,000 fans trickle into the vast stadium bowl.
In February that season they lost three in a row – Forest Green, Accrington and Colchester – and secured a playoff spot on the final day after a 0-0 draw against Morecambe. A fortnight ago, a record crowd of 30,232 filled the ground for victory over Leeds. “We are averaging 25,000 this season – the highest average attendance since 1971,” Boddy says. “That is the mountain we have climbed.”
In the undisputed era of the head coach, Robins is surely a dying breed. “He is totally in control of everything and rightly so, in the old-fashioned sense of a manager,” Boddy says. “He runs it from top to bottom. That is the way that he has probably been brought up, coming through Manchester United’s ranks. That was the way Sir Alex Ferguson ran Manchester United and while I’m not comparing the two, it is not dissimilar in the way that he goes about it. He is an excellent man-manager, a brilliant tactician. Adi [Viveash, Coventry’s assistant manager] is also extremely skilled as a coach and a player developer, that makes them the real deal and, in many ways, the complete package.”
On Robins’ first day back, he was dismayed when one player arrived on the training pitch eating toast a minute before the session was due to start at 10.30am. Those who work with Robins talk about how his professionalism and determination to drive standards underpin their rise. “There are no easy days,” says Liam Kelly, the Coventry captain who joined the club in the fourth tier in 2017.
“Training is such a high standard every single day. You have to work hard and that has been one of the key components to the success through all of the teams that have played the last few seasons. The bar is set so high. It’s not about being content with where we are but always wanting to push one step further.”
Coventry eye spirit of '87
Coventry make their first FA Cup return to Wembley since Brian Kilcline, Keith Houchen, Steve Ogrizovic et al pulled off that famous 3-2 win over Tottenham in the 1987 final (pictured). Looking for an omen? As in that famous run they have already overcome Sheffield Wednesday this season: Callum O’Hare scored twice in a 4-1 fourth-round replay win after a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough; in 1987 Houchen bagged a brace to add to Cyrille Regis’s goal in a 3-1 quarter-final win over the Owls in Sheffield. And on the way to glory John Sillett’s side faced a Manchester United team with an embattled manager in the dugout – Houchen netted the only goal as they beat Alex Ferguson’s side 1-0. One of the significant steps that helped Robins build bridges with an apathetic fanbase was to engage with supporters’ clubs set up in surrounding towns – and beyond – by partaking in monthly Q+A sessions. “We’ve got a London supporters’ group and we travelled down on the train after training to do one there on several occasions,” says Boddy, acknowledging they would not always have the answers. “We had to take the punches and remember actions speak louder than words. It has not all been roses and light but it is about putting in the hard yards, isn’t it?”

Coventry need a flawless finish to have a chance of making the playoffs for a second successive season and extending their run of year-on-year improvement under Robins, after finishing fifth last season. He rebuilt the team again last summer after absorbing the departures of Viktor Gyökeres, who Robins believes will excel at the peak of the game, and Gustavo Hamer, to Sporting and Sheffield United respectively. Off the pitch, they have also made strides. Their Ryton training base is being revamped, with medical facilities such as hyperbaric and cryotherapy chambers introduced, and staffing levels have multiplied since the days when Robins had to moonlight as an executive and peacemaker. Dr Claire-Marie Roberts began her role as performance director this year after almost a decade at the Premier League. “One of Mark’s strengths is that he always wants to drive it on,” Boddy says. “We knocked on the door last season and he has the ambition to be a Premier League manager.”
Sunderland came calling in 2019 – the only known attempt to prise Robins from Coventry – but he rejected the chance to speak to them and signed a new contract. Now he can look forward to a fourth Wembley trip in seven years, another outing for the supporters to savour. “We’ve given them a special occasion just being there; being in the national stadium against Manchester United, it doesn’t get much bigger than that,” Robins says. “We’ve also got to carry a threat because otherwise we’ll just be sat there [passively] for 90 minutes.”
Robins acknowledges his perception as a serious, measured character. “He is absolutely that, but he is also good fun and good company, a big family man,” Boddy says. Robins scored the goal that was widely thought to keep Ferguson in his job in 1990, against Nottingham Forest in this competition, but the chances of him replaying that moment over in his mind before Sunday are zero.
The manager is more concerned about trying to beat United, but stresses it is important his players are not duped by the negativity surrounding Erik ten Hag’s side. “Pundits, people in football talk in a derisory way about Manchester United, what they’re doing and how they’re performing,” Robins says. “But the truth of it is they have got top, top players. Manchester United are the biggest club in the world. If you cannot enjoy that, you shouldn’t be playing.”
