24 apr usatf foundation releases $20,000 to mark springer youth travel grant program.
INDIANAPOLIS – The USA Track & Field Foundation has released $20,000 to support the Mark Springer Youth Travel Grant program, Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman Bob Greifeld announced today.
Named after the former USATF Director of Grass Roots Programs & Planning, and program originator, the program offers travel assistance grants to eligible youth clubs across the country for their athletes who qualify to compete at national youth and junior championship events.
Since 2006, the USATF Foundation has contributed more than $120,000 to the Springer program. Clubs awarded a grant must participate in USATF’s Win With Integrity program by having their athletes complete the Win With Integrity Pledge Form , which will be provided upon receipt of the grant. 2012 Mark Springer Travel Grant award recipients will be announced in early May.
In support of youth clubs nationwide, the Foundation encourage youth track clubs and programs from all areas of the United States to apply for financial assistance. The Foundation favors the use of grant money to expand existing youth programs/clubs, to provide additional competitive opportunities for children and to enhance the experience for all participants. Preference is given to clubs that are based in low-income areas. It also favors programs that have a history of solid financial management, multiple funding sources and community support. Allowable expenses include equipment, uniforms, meet fees, travel, facility rental, staff and volunteer training, and outreach.
The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging and experienced elite athletes, along with guidance on future career paths. The Foundation depends upon donations from its Board of Directors, major gifts, and from generous fans of track & field.
Elite athletes are supported by the Foundation via monetary grants, career counseling (mentoring and jobs) and participation in Run With US!. Youth athletes are supported via monetary grants to youth clubs.

EDITORS NOTE:
Mark Springer was a young man who on the way home from working at the USATF National Office was in a fatal car accident. I'm happy that the USATF Foundation named this Youth Travel Fund after Mark. There are lots of teams and athletes that qualify for Nationals that need this travel money. His job was over the Youth part of the USATF. I'm proud to say that Mark was a good friend.

Establishing grassroots programs, such as the Junior Olympics, to help develop the future stars of the sport.
Promoting programs of training and competition for men and women and boys and girls of all ages.
Establishing and enforcing the rules and regulations of our sport.
Sanctioning more than 8,000 events each year.
Providing administrative and financial sponsorship support in connection with certain USATF national championships events, including the Mark Springer Travel Grant .
Providing insurance to sanctioned events, member clubs, and member athletes.
Certifying race courses for accuracy and validating records .
Conducting Coaching Education courses to educate coaches of all levels across the country.
More than 130,000 Americans are members of USATF. Our member organizations include the NCAA, NAIA, Road Runners Club of America, Running USA, and the National Federation of State High School Associations. Fifty-six USATF Associations oversee the sport and its more than 3,000 clubs at the local level, with thousands of volunteers keeping track and field vibrant on the local and national levels. From an organizational perspective, USATF has been one of the greatest financial success stories in sport. In 2017, USATF reached a record annual budget of more than $35 million, and in 2016 USATF instituted a groundbreaking elite athlete revenue distribution plan to provide millions of dollars in additional financial support to Team USATF athletes. This surge in revenue has coincided with a hefty increase in the number of track meets broadcast on television and in TV ratings. In 2016, USATF announced a long-term broadcasting partnership with NBC Sports, ensuring broadcasting consistency on the world’s premier Olympic-sport network.

USATF Annual Meeting
Traditionally held the week following Thanksgiving, our Annual Meeting brings together more than 1,300 of the sport's officials, coaches, administrators, athletes, and supporters. The yearly gathering serves as a forum to chart the future of our sport by considering policy changes, selecting national team staffs and Championship meet sites, and electing national officers. But it is not all business. The Annual Meeting also gives us the opportunity to recognize the achievements of our sport's volunteers and athletes. Each year, USATF inducts a new class into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame and makes presentations for year-end award winners, including the Jesse Owens Award for the top American athletes. Members attending the Annual Meeting have the opportunity to meet the sport's top stars, and USATF offers various social and recreational opportunities for attendees throughout the five-day event.

The twenty-first century is the era when populations of cities will exceed rural communities for the first time in human history. The population growth of cities in many countries, including those in transition from planned to market economies, is putting considerable strain on ecological and natural resources. This paper examines four central issues: (a) the challenges and opportunities presented through working in jurisdictions where there are no official or established methods in place to guide regional, ecological and landscape planning and design; (b) the experience of the author’s practice—Gillespies LLP—in addressing these challenges using techniques and methods inspired by McHarg in Design with Nature in the Russian Federation in the first decade of the twenty-first century; (c) the augmentation of methods derived from Design with Nature in reference to innovations in technology since its publication and the contribution that the art of landscape painters can make to landscape analysis and interpretation; and (d) the application of this experience to the international competition and colloquium for the expansion of Moscow. The text concludes with a comment on how the application of this learning and methodological development to landscape and ecological planning and design was judged to be a central tenant of the winning design. Finally, a concluding section reflects on lessons learned and conclusions drawn.
