Thank you for putting together such an interesting and varied programme. We had the pleasure of being shown the sights by some marvellous guides. All very passionate about their interests, and very interesting. Their English was extremely fluent, and their knowledge, second to none. An Alternative One Week Itinerary in Europe: Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga

I have this thing with overland travel. I just think you can see so much more of the country you’re exploring by travelling by car, train, boat or bus instead of hopping on a flight. So last summer, instead of opting for a simple city break in Europe, I decided I wanted an overland adventure between 3 cities on my bucketlist.

It was perfect for a week’s annual leave and combined city exploring with a bit of rural love. Plus, the three cities I chose were quite low key. I mean they’re big cities, not exactly off the beaten track, but I’d seen less about them online so it felt like more of an adventure than say going to somewhere like Barcelona or Rome.

I flew into Finland’s capital, Helsinki, for a bit of the Scandinavian vibe, then took the famous ferry to Tallinn in Estonia. I explored medieval Tallinn for a few days, then travelled overland to Riga, Latvia.

It was such a cool trip. Admittedly, dampened a little by the morning sickness I was experiencing at the time! But otherwise I really enjoyed it and thought it was worth jotting down my itinerary in case you fancied doing something similar yourself, pal.

Kohtuotsa viewing platform, Tallinn

One Week Itinerary in Europe

Day 1: fly into helsinki.

Today is your day to arrive in Helsinki to start your overland adventure. I always struggle with iteneraries for the first day as really it’s dependant on what time you get there. But if you have a few hours in the afternoon, try to check out Suomenolinna , a large island a 15 minute ferry away. There’s a fortress to explore and you get lovely views of the city.

If you’re after a cheap dinner, try Fafa’s or Friends & Brgrs . (Check out my post on Helsinki cheap eats over here ).

Day 2: Helsinki

Ok, it’s your full day in Helsinki and there’s lots to see!

Start off at the Helsinki Cathedral in Senate Square. If you want to see a lot today, try the Hop On Hop Off bus or jump on trams to get around.

A sauna in Finland is a must and the best place for it is Löyly Sauna , looking over the water. Once you’re fully relaxed, head to Regatta Cafe for lunch and obligatory Insta pics (it’s so pretty!). Head to Linnanmäki amusement park in the afternoon for fun rides and gorge views of Helsinki from the free Panoramic Tower.

Finally take a sunset boat ride around the islands, checking out the icebreaker fleet and Degerö Canal. Although remember to take a jacket even in summer, it gets chilly!

It’s a lot to pack into one day so pick and choose if you want a slower pace. But it’s totally possible to cover it all, I promise. (Read more: 24 Hours In Helsinki )

Helsinki Cathedral

Day 3: Helsinki – Tallinn

Today it’s time to get the ferry to Tallinn ! I have a whole post on the ferry ride over here if you fancy a read. But it’s a really easy journey and I’d recommend booking an early ferry to make the most of your time in Tallinn.

Once you’ve arrived and left your bags at your hotel/AirBnb, this afternoon is dedicated to exploring the alternative side of Tallinn – the Kalamaja area. Head to Telliskivi to explore the boutiques and check out the street art, and stop at Revel Cafe for a cute coffee stop.

Have dinner at the very cool F-Hoone and go for drinks at Peatus . It’s in nearby DEPOO , a collection of shipping containers that have been converted into cool things. And Peatus is a former train that’s now a bar and club!

Day 4: Tallinn

Today’s itinerary is all about the medieval Old Town of Tallinn. Pretty much every building is incredible so it’s just worth going for a wander in this part of the city. Head up to Kohtuotsa viewing platform for awesome views of Tallinn, which you’ve probably seen on Insta. This is also where you can explore Alexander Nevsky Cathedral for A+ Russian architecture.

For lunch try out Olde Hansa for the ultimate medieval experience. They only serve food that would be in the medieval times and the whole place is lit by candlelight. It’s a bit cheesey but I liked it.

If you want to do something a bit different this afternoon, check out Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour . It’s essentially a plane museum which does not sound fun, but it’s really quirky and interactive so I thought it was pretty cool!

Old Town, Tallinn

Day 5: Tallinn – Riga

Today is the overland road trip from Tallinn to Riga. To make life easier, I took the Traveller Tours Tallinn to Riga minibus which stops at a few interesting parts of the Estonian and Latvian countryside. I’d recommend it, it was quite fun.

But if you’d rather hire a car, I recommend stopping at Valga to see the Estonian history and military museum , which also has laser tag. Because why not. And also, the Bob Sled Track in Sigulda is worth a stop too.

But to be honest if you’re exploring by car I think part of the fun is just stopping at random towns and seeing what’s there!

Day 6: Riga

Start off your itinerary in Riga with some darn delicious bagels from Big Bad Bagels . Then take your time strolling through Esplanade Park and checking out the golden Nativity Cathedral .

Riga is another city that’s full of pretty buildings to just wander and take in. Three Brothers and House of the Blackheads are good’uns to take a peek at. Stop by Parunasim Cafe for a coffe and cake and check out the al fresco restaurants in Livu Square for lunch. There are a lot of options and it’s just a nice, bustling spot to be in.

For dinner and drinks, check out Folkklubs , a traditional underground tavern with folky vibes and hearty food.

Day 7: Fly Home From Riga

The week of European adventure is over! Depending on your flight home, you might have some time free today. If so check out Riga Castle or one of the museums in the city!

Livu Square, Riga

What do you think of this one week itinerary in Europe?

I actually did an extra day in Tallinn so it’s flexible if you want to spend more time in Helsinki, Tallinn or Riga. But it’s a fab little itinerary if you only have a week’s holiday and want to see as much as possible of three awesome cities.

Would you do a trip like this?

Head over to my Instagram or Twitter accounts for regular updates on my travels, motherhood and life in general.

Kohtuotsa viewing platform, Tallinn

Great itinerary! I have 5 days at the end of May and struggling to decide on whether to spend more time in Tallinn or Riga, which one did you prefer?

I’d definitely choose more time in Tallinn. Feels like there’s more to do there than Riga 🙂 Enjoy!

Helsinki is a beautiful, bustling capital city – an idyllic archipelago nestled on the Gulf of Finland and boasting over 300 islands. Surrounded by lush forests and vast, picturesque parks, both Central Park and Kaivopuisto Park offer stunning views overlooking the sea, just two of the city’s tranquil spots that provide us with an uplifting breath of fresh air. Our morning tour takes us around many of Helsinki’s highlights, including its striking Railway Station and the sculptural Sibelius Monument, resembling organ pipes. During the afternoon, we’re free to explore the city’s vastly varied sights Signature Experience Perhaps there is no better way to fully appreciate the heritage of Finland than through the music of Jean Sibelius. With its perfect acoustics, the Baroque-style ballroom of the Balder Hall is the perfect venue for a magical live performance in these beautiful and historic surroundings.

Today, prepare to be transported back in time as we take a short ferry ride from the mainland to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Suomenlinna Fortress. Despite a tumultuous history, the fortress is now the epitome of peace and tranquillity. Our expert guide will bring the fort’s history back to life as we explore Suomenlinna’s four bastions, as well as a wealth of other attractions within the fortress walls, including deep and eerie connecting tunnels, a turquoise-topped dual use church/lighthouse, the ominous canons, lakes, gardens and even a beach. Outside of the crumbling fortress walls, we meander through the cobbled streets, across connecting bridges and in between old wooden buildings now home to quaint restaurants and artists’ workshops. In the afternoon you’ll have some free time where you may choose to head back to Helsinki or stay on Suomenlinna.

Today, we leave Finland in our wake and cross the Gulf from Scandinavia to Estonia. We dock in the port of Tallinn and drive east along the coast until we arrive at picturesque Kadriorg Palace. Built in the 18th century by Russian Emperor Peter the Great as a gift to his wife Catherine, this sweeping confection of a building now houses one of the country’s best art collections. Here, we take a guided tour of its intricate interior, taking in the exquisite and mesmerising ceiling in the main hall, as well as the impressive manicured gardens and fountains that the palace overlooks. After this most regal outing we continue to Tallinn to settle into our hotel before heading out for dinner in a local restaurant. You will stay for two nights at the four-star Nordic Forum Hotel.

Estonia’s capital Tallinn is, quite simply, a time warp. Its fairy tale UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town, a rabbit-warren of atmospheric streets neatly situated below an impressive hilltop Upper Town, offers endless discovery: an ancient castle, a pastel-coloured baroque Parliament building, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. As you enter Tallinn’s Old Town through its landmark 14th century Viru Gate, you’re immediately struck by the heady fragrance of fresh blooms from the plethora of flower shops that line the road ahead. Sitting in the shadows of the church steeples, castle walls and grand cathedrals you’ll happen across a hotchpotch of winding streets and alleyways, colourful buildings and traditional traders. Stroll through Catherine’s Passage, an atmospheric hidden alleyway lined with all manner of artists’ workshops. Once we’ve enjoyed our morning walking tour of the upper and lower Old Town with a local guide, there’s time to seek out various local treasures, wander through the shadows of the city walls, or maybe just a short stop to sip a coffee and watch the world go by. Signature Experiences: As you wander mingle with the locals and sample a selection of local delicacies, what better way to experience to experience the aromas and distinctive flavours which are typical to Estonia.  The craft beers of Tallinn are gaining in popularity and later this afternoon you’ll visit a local brewery for tasting. In these unique surroundings discover secrets of the brewing process which date back to the 16th century and later enjoy a delicious selection of the finest local beers as you reflect on an entertaining and insightful visit.

After breakfast we continue our tour to Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city and its cultural capital, home to the country’s most renowned university. On our arrival we’ll have time to enjoy lunch and explore the picturesque city centre. The Old Town Square is the perfect place to people watch and take in the views of the Emajogi River, the Kissing Students Fountain, the pretty pink Town Hall and the curious Leaning House – home to the Tartu Art Museum. Not only has that, but the medieval St John’s Church, boasted some of the best views over the Old Town from its belfry. We set off again mid-afternoon on our journey to Riga, capital of Latvia, where we’ll settle into our hotel before heading out for the evening to sample some local cuisine in a nearby restaurant.  You will stay in either the four-star Radisson Blu Elizabete or the four-star Wellton Hotel and Spa.

Today, we visit beautiful Riga, largest of the Baltic State cities. Situated at the mouth of the River Daugava, this charming, cosmopolitan city offers a real mix of architectural styles. Spires of dark, gothic churches tower above the shadowy cobblestone streets below. During our morning walking tour, we explore these hidden delights and the medieval maze that makes up the Old Town, including the striking foliage-covered Powder Tower - home to the Latvian War Museum, and the central Dome Square - the heart of seven atmospheric streets. Stand on the marked spot on the square and you can see all three golden cockerels on top of the Old Town church spires. During the afternoon, you’re free to explore the city as you wish, a stroll through Riga’s famously vast Central Market, five pavilions of old Zeppelin hangars so iconic that it’s included on the UNESCO World Heritage list, along with the city’s Old Town.

After breakfast it’s time to bid a fond farewell to the beauty of the Baltics and take the transfer for the flight home.

  • Day 3 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day Today, prepare to be transported back in time as we take a short ferry ride from the mainland to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Suomenlinna Fortress.
  • Day 4 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day Today, we leave Finland in our wake and cross the Gulf from Scandinavia to Estonia.
  • Day 5 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day Estonia’s capital Tallinn is, quite simply, a time warp.
  • Day 6 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day After breakfast we continue our tour to Tartu, Estonia’s second largest city and its cultural capital, home to the country’s most renowned university. You will stay in the four-star Radisson Blu Elizabete for two nights on a bed and breakfast basis.
  • Day 7 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day Today, we visit beautiful Riga, largest of the Baltic State cities.
  • Day 8 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day After breakfast it’s time to bid a fond farewell to the beauty of the Baltics and take the transfer for the flight home.

I'm not suggesting that you buy two one way tickets, that will indeed be expensive. You should buy an open jaw-ticket: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-jaw_ticket

Just spotted an error in my earlier post. It should be "Why NOT book an open jaw ticket and fly home direct from Riga?"

Once we’ve enjoyed our morning walking tour of the upper and lower Old Town with a local guide, there’s time to seek out various local treasures, wander through the shadows of the city walls, or maybe just a short stop to sip a coffee and watch the world go by.

You will stay in either the four-star Radisson Blu Ridzene or the four-star Wellton Hotel & Spa.

A leafy landscape that’s typical of Scandinavia plus the modern development that began for the 1952 Olympic Games creates a lively hub of culture, education and industry thriving at the centre of Helsinki today.

It's hardly surprising that most Finns have visited Estonia when you see how simple the Tallink Ferry makes hopping across the Gulf seem. With Helsinki being in the south of Finland, and Tallinn, the Estonian capital, in the north of the country, the two cities essentially face each other, although they are very much of a contrast.

South of Tallinn we find the city known as Estonia’s cultural capital – Tartu. A perfect pit stop when travelling through the forests towards Latvia. This pretty city is firmly focused on the intellectual, as home to the National University of Estonia and a variety of important museums.

From Helsinki just north of the Baltics to Riga, our southernmost stop, this tour rakes in four cities across a trio of countries on the cusp of where Russia and Europe collide. Accompanied by an expert guide, you will discover the very best on offer from this hidden gem corner of Europe made up of Finland, Estonia and Latvia.

Helsinki, Tallinn & Riga Itinerary

Fly to Helsinki and transfer to your hotel, where you'll stay in the four-star Scandic Grand Marina or the four-star Scandic Park.

During the afternoon, we’re free to explore the city’s vastly varied sights
