Maroon 5 is one of the best-known pop rock bands out there. Its musical style vacillates between pop and pop rock with some indie rock and funk influences. The group has also experimented with new wave and disco sounds on several albums.

The band’s general tone and style shifts from one album to the next. Songs from Songs About Jane concentrated on frontman and vocalist Adam Levine’s former girlfriend. The material from It Won’t Be Soon Before Long is less personal and has a more electric sound with an overall synthesized, retro feel. With Hands All Over, the band returned to the theme of lost love from its first album. Regardless of the style it’s drawing on, Maroon 5’s knack for churning out catchy, jammable pop hits keeps it at the top of charts year after year.

The band is largely responsible for its own songwriting, with most of its most popular songs being written by various band members or in collaborative efforts among the members. Michael Jackson, The Police, Stevie Wonder, the Bee Gees, The Beatles, Tonic, Marvin Gaye, and Prince are all cited as significant influences on the band’s sound. Levine personally cites Billy Joel as a major influence, and guitarist James Valentine cites Queens of the Stone Age as his biggest influence.

Formed by high school friends Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick in Los Angeles, California in 1994, the band originally played under the name Kara’s Flowers. It changed its name to Maroon 5 after its musical direction matured while each member attended college and it added guitarist James Valentine.

The new urban edge and pop-soul sound their time at college had lent to the band’s music proved successful, and its 2002 debut album Songs About Jane sold 5 million albums in the US. Singles “Harder to Breathe” and “She Will Be Loved” quickly propelled the band to mega-stardom.

The success of Maroon 5’s debut album in 2002 caught the attention of John Mayer, The Rolling Stones, Sugar Ray, Gavin DeGraw, The Hives, and a number of other top performers, all of whom Maroon 5 has toured alongside. While three years of constant touring did wonders for the band’s popularity and fan base, it took its toll on drummer Ryan Dusick, who was forced to leave the band in 2006 due to an injury.

With Dusick replaced by Matt Flynn, the band soon released its 2007 album It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, which broke iTunes records by selling over 101,000 albums within the first week of its release. The single “Makes Me Wonder,” a sexy departure from the band’s sweeter tracks on Songs About Jane, took the US by storm, hitting the number one spot on the Billboard charts.

The band’s following albums, Hands All Over (2012) and Overexposed (2012), both performed similarly, with each hitting either the number one or number two spot in the US album chart. The band’s most successful single, though, is the 2011 megahit “Moves Like Jagger,” which featured Christina Aguilera and sold a staggering 15 million copies, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Carmichael left the group in 2012 before rejoining it again in 2014. The same year, the band signed a new recording contract with Interscope Records and Adam Levine’s vanity label 222 Records. The band returned to the studio to record its fifth album, V, which reached number one on the Billboard 200. The single “Sugar” from the album quickly climbed to number two on the Hot 100 chart. The song was immensely popular and was featured in several commercials.

2014 marked one of the most successful and active phases of the band’s career to date. Maroon 5 was highly visible on the music scene that year, performing at several large-scale events and festivals. Early in the year, Maroon 5 was part of the 2014 iTunes Festival at the Roundhouse in London, England. Later that year, the group performed at the iHeartRadio Jingle Ball Tour.

Chasing the success of V, the group released its sixth album, Red Pill Blues, in 2017. The successful single “Girls Like You” skyrocketed to the number one position on the Hot 100 chart.

With the addition of Sam Farrar on bass in 2020, the band’s lineup jumped to seven total members: Adam Levine (lead vocals), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards, lead and rhythm guitar), James Valentine (lead and rhythm guitar), Matt Flynn (drums), PJ Morton (keyboards, backing vocals), and Sam Farrar (bass).

In June 2021, the band’s seventh album, Jordi, was released to mixed critical reviews. Despite the lukewarm critical reception, the album was a commercial success and sold well. The highly popular singles “Memories,” “Beautiful Mistakes” and “Nobody’s Love” featuring Megan Thee Stallion appeared on the album.

Maroon 5 is the recipient of numerous music industry awards and honors. To date, the band has won three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, three People’s Choice Awards, and eight Billboard Music Awards.

Maroon 5 embarked on the Maroon 5 World Tour in 2022, and the North American leg of the tour will begin in 2023. Stay tuned to find out when you can catch it live!

Live reviews

Sometimes when you hear a band that you love perform live for the first time, you're a bit disappointed because they do not sound as great as they do in the recordings. Well, that is NOT the case with Maroon 5, what you hear on recording is what you get live.

Adam Levine has an amazing voice. He is super talented, and they made no mistake when they decided to make him a judge on the show, The Voice. I could watch him perform live with his band all day. Some of my very favorite songs by Maroon 5 are their old ones such as “Never Gonna Leave This Bed”, “Harder To Breathe”, and “Misery” but when they start singing “Payphone”, I go crazy. I absolutely love this song performed live!

Perhaps the best song to see them perform live is “Moves Like Jagger”. It makes you move when you hear it on the radio, but when you hear it live, you're dancing non stop. Maroon 5 concerts are mostly upbeat and fun, but there are times when it slows down and they perform those songs that make you want to call your ex. The atmosphere to their concerts is just right. Chill at times, but also upbeat and loud.

Put Maroon 5 on your list of bands to see live because you will not be disappointed.

Report as inappropriate

Maroon 5 have been constant and consistent in the charts over their long career which now spans almost fifteen years. The band, fronted by Adam Levine has come along way since the immediate success with 'Songs For Jane'. Now working on their sixth album, they obtain a consistency within their live show to match.

Armed with a plethora of hits, the band tear into 'One More Night' from the 2012 album 'Overexposed'. The audience singalong as Levine confidently struts around the stage commanding his loyal followers. A good mixture of material old and new make for a solid setlist where the band are able to show consistency through their recordings as the likes of 'Sunday Morning' and 'Maps' sit well together and achieve an equally positive reaction.

A real track of the 00's, 'She Will Be Loved' makes for perhaps the largest singalong of the evening as the crowd proudly attempt the high, long notes in the same way Adam does during the chorus. Evidently hitting their stride with latest album 'V', Maroon 5 impress crowds by remaining as relevant now as they were during their incarnation back in 2002.

This is my second show in the last 2 years and neither time was I disappointed in the least. This time I was fortunate enough to have the money I saved to purchase pretty good seats. I am now spoiled and can no longer sit in the stands. I am already saving my money for the next US tour in hopes to be even closer next show. No matter where your seats though....Adam is all over the stage in high energy, which is very infectious!! Anyone who did not enjoy that show, must not have been paying attention. They sounded awesome live...awesome!! Adam made the audience feel as though they were part of the show and VERY, VERY much appreciated! The lights were perfect, the set list was awesome as well. They played much longer than most people expected and the encore was just as great as the rest of the show, maybe even better. Maybe that is because I am partial to "Moves Like Jagger" and there it was....This was worth every dollar I paid, which was way more than I would pay to see anyone but maroon 5!! If you get a chance to see them sometime....make it a point....you will fall in love!!

IT WAS SOOOOOO AMAZING. they played all the songs i grew up listening to so all the memories just came flooding in and it was simply the best experience EVERR! seeing my favs live in concert was so LIT. What Lovers Do, Payphone, Maps, Cold, Sugar, Sunday Morning, Wait, Girls Like You, This Love AND MOVES LIKE JAGGER WOOO these are all my favourites and they played all of them AND MORE!!! i can’t barely describe how amazing this experience was. i was a bit upset that they didn’t perform an encore and some songs from the album that i really thought would be played like Help Me Out and Whiskey. from what my sister told me, Maroon 5 performed an encore last time round so i was quite let down when the concert ended without an one this time. nevertheless, it was a still a fantastic performance and i really hope to see them again soon!!!

No food allowed into the event, and the only food available from vendors was junk food (3-4 different pizza vendors, 2-3 sub vendors), not 1 single option for those wishing to eat healthy (not even a freaking salad was available anywhere).

Paid over $300 for "zone 1 seating", which was PACKED and there really was no "seating" as it was on the beach and turned into a free for all battle for a spot.

Lines into and out of "seating zones" were HORRIBLE throughout the ENTIRE event! The shitty food vendors were located past "zone 3" which meant that getting a bite to eat was about an hour process for those of us in zone 1!

Absolutely the last time I'm ever attending a concert at this venue!

As for the show itself, Maroon V was good, but for some reason decided to only play 3-4 songs from their new album.. Go figure.

I've been waiting to see Maroon 5 for 6 years and I'm so glad I finally did it.

I love that they didn't lose the essence of them as a pop rock band and a as a collective of musicians rather than just Adam Levine, especially since that's what it seems like in recent albums V and Red Pill Blues.

They started the show with videos and interacted a lot with the audience which made it a memorable show!

That said, Adam Levines voice was a little off... most of the time. He can't hit high notes and instead of really singing the lyrics sometimes it seemed like he was talking.

Still enjoyed the solos and appreciate that they played more "rock" songs like Harder To Breathe as well as their very recent pop music.

The band was really good at times, but Adam Levine did not seem to be at his best. Entire show including encore was 1:20. No real effects, which is ok, if the music is great, but no one was super impressed with the performance. Maybe an off day. If you are thinking about getting the VIP package- DON'T! Complete rip off and Maroon 5 and VIP Nations EU should be ashamed. Grocery bag with Maroon 5 on it, a lanyard, a silk screen pillow (seriously), and cheap sunglasses. No band photos, certainly no pictures with you and the band, no autographed anything. Complete and utter SH*T for your extra money. They also made us wait outside for 35 minutes, 28 degree heat, beyond their published entrance opening, no apology. Awful!

Maroon 5 to play July 1 show at MassMutual Center

  • Published: Jun. 25, 2024, 9:41 a.m.

  • Keith O'Connor | Special to The Republican

In advance of yet more dates for their popular Las Vegas residency at Park MGM, pop act Maroon 5 has set aside time to visit Springfield for a hit-filled concert with all new production and staging at the MassMutual Center on Monday, July 1.

Showtime is 8 p.m.

Maroon 5 is playing a limited series of performances on the East Coast this summer, coinciding with headline shows at Milwaukee’s Summerfest and the Ottawa Bluesfest supported on some dates by Grammy Award-winning singer Maren Morris.

“Having Maroon 5 perform at the MassMutual Center is a tremendous honor and an exciting milestone for Springfield. We’re looking forward to kicking off the week of July 4th and bringing the community together with some top-tier talent. This event showcases the MassMutual Center’s ability to provide world-class entertainment and highlights our partnership with MGM Springfield,” said Sean Dolan, general manager of the MassMutual Center.

Fans can expect to hear many of the group’s biggest hits during the concert, including “Moves Like Jagger,” which features Christina Aguilera; “Sugar,” “Girls Like You,” which features Cardi B; “She Will Be Loved, “What Lover Do,” which features SZA; “Memories,” “Payphone,” which features Wiz Khalifa, and many others.

The group, with Adam Levine as frontman, was formed in 1994 as Kara’s Flowers while its members were still in high school. In addition to Levine, today’s lineup includes rhythm guitarist and keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, lead guitarist James Valentine, drummer Matt Flynn, keyboardist PJ Morton and multi-instrumentalist and bassist Sam Farrar.

Levine has also distinguished himself as one of the four original coaches of NBC’s hit show “The Voice,” which made its debut in 2011. He coached for 16 consecutive seasons before departing in 2019. NBC in early June announced that Levine will return as a coach for Season 27 alongside Kelsea Ballerini, Michael Buble and John Legend.

Since they released their debut album in 2002, “Songs About Jane,” the Los Angeles band have achieved three Grammy Awards, as well as selling more than 96 million albums and over 660 million singles worldwide. Maroon 5 currently has more than 22 billion combined streams on Spotify. Thirty-two of their songs have charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including four No. 1 hits and 15 Top Ten entries.

Like many big-name artists today, Maroon 5 are also a popular Las Vegas act. They had their own residency last year, M5LV The Residency, at the Dolby Live at Park MGM theater which continued this year with dates in May and June as well as upcoming show in September and October.

The group released the single “Middle Ground” last year, but their last studio album called “Jordi” was released in 2021. Since “Middle Ground,” the band have worked on some new songs and Levine teased on air with Ryan Seacrest that the new project is the band’s “coolest” and most “different” work yet.

Ticket prices range from $79 to $299 and are available online.

Maroon 5 and Adam Levine rest on their laurels at Summerfest in Milwaukee

I t’s been over five years since the worst Super Bowl halftime performance of all time, and Maroon 5 fans at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater Friday night had apparently forgiven and/or forgotten.

The lights went down and Harry Belafonte's "Jump in the Line" blasted over the sound system. Although the lawn was sparsely populated, there were very few actual seats vacant as the band took the stage, and the sea of people commenced to sway and head-bob the night away.

Levine emerged in ripped jeans and, naturally, layers up top — though it should be noted he kept a shirt on for the entire performance. It could have been Def Leppard onstage for opener "Animals"; the lighting was dark and menacing, the hair-metal (sans hair) intensity reached a fever pitch …

Get daily updates on the Packers during the season.

Then the band suddenly downshifted into the faux-reggae of "One More Night." Transitions weren't always smooth or logical, but the beat rarely stopped.

More: Bryson Tiller, Lil Tecca, and the best and worst of Summerfest 2024's Day 8 in Milwaukee

The ensuing segue into "This Love" was more natural, and the crowd relished the early opportunity to belt this one out. Then Levine strapped on an electric guitar and brought this tune to another quick climax. It wasn't until the song was over that he finally took his jacket off. (Admittedly, it was chilly for July.)

The band, regardless of how many guitars were being played, leaned into an extra meaty arena-rock sound for most of the set, eschewing its latest album, 2021's "Jordi," almost entirely; “Memories” was the only tune from the current decade that the group played. It was a feel-good nostalgia night from a band that has contentedly watched pop culture begin to move on from it.

Not unlike Bono before him, Levine may have overindulged in rock-star hubris in the past, and the current tour may be a return-to-basics effort akin to U2's Elevation Tour in 2001, only without the crucial component of acclaimed new material. At least there was no giant disco-ball lemon?

Meanwhile, there'll probably be a new U2 album any day now; kudos to Maroon 5 for knowing when to rest on their laurels.

Also, any chance to put keyboardist PJ Morton in the spotlight was a win for the audience. Following a band-intro interlude atop David Bowie's "Let's Dance," Morton treated us to his own "Heavy," and his versatile work hopping between electric piano and various other synths stood out in an otherwise painfully generic sound.

Morton, like most of the six-piece ensemble, was stationed on his own luminous riser behind Levine; only guitarist James Valentine got to roam stage level with Levine, heightening the starkest difference between U2 and Maroon 5: The former is a band, while the latter is just Levine and five guys. If any of those five have their own personalities, they must not be allowed to reveal them onstage.

The songs obviously still connect with people, though, and if REO Speedwagon can still play Summerfest, Milwaukee can probably look forward to decades yet of Maroon 5 shows here.

Dasha opened for Maroon 5 at Summerfest

Thirty years ago, fans at a rock concert might have pitched a fit if the opening act strolled out and started playing country songs. Nowadays, though, everybody’s pivoting to country; if Beyoncé can do it, so can Dasha.

The California pop singer-songwriter scored her biggest hit with this year’s “Austin (Boots Stop Workin’),” and, based on her set Friday night, country’s the direction she’s heading.

The song boasts so many country clichés it came off as tourism if not downright parody; tiny pockets of the crowd burst into hoedowns all the same.

In 20 years, parody will become canon in the blink of an eye, and although Dasha didn’t play anything else remotely as catchy, “Austin” is probably as fine a start as any.

Adam Levine Wraps Summer Shows with Maroon 5 as Source Says He's 'Excited' to Be Back on  The Voice

Maroon 5 headed to the East Coast in late June and early July for a few select dates and will next be back onstage for their upcoming Las Vegas residency shows

Adam Levine  has a lot to look forward to!

After Maroon 5 wrapped their short East Coast tour and headlined Milwaukee and Ottawa festivals, Levine is preparing for his return to The Voice, which starts filming this summer.

"Adam is excited to be back on  The Voice  [set] this summer and looking forward to the new season," a source exclusively tells PEOPLE of the new season that is set to air in 2025.

In addition to The Voice , the Maroon 5 frontman — who performed fan-favorite hits like "This Love," "Moves Like Jagger" and "Sugar" with the band over the weekend — is also preparing for the second half of the band's Las Vegas residency , which kicks off Sept. 27.

"New music is also coming soon," the source tells PEOPLE of the group.

Maroon 5 kicked off their Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM in March 2023. The shows ran through August of that year, and in December, it was announced that the band was returning to Sin City for 16 more shows, beginning in May 2024.

“I’m really look forward to doing it again and honestly could never have told you that  before we started ,” Levine previously told PEOPLE , admitting he was initially “skeptical” of the residency. "I had no idea what to expect. Obviously I went into it with an open mind and a good attitude, but I was actually shocked at how much I enjoyed it.”

After the first half of their Vegas residency wrapped on June 1, Maroon 5 took a short break before traveling to the East Coast this summer for a few select dates through Michigan, Indiana, Toronto, North Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York. In early July, they headlined Milwaukee and Ottawa music festivals.

The second half of their Vegas residency picks back up on Sept. 27, and the band will play another eight shows before wrapping on Oct. 12.

Before returning to Vegas, Levine will start filming season 27 of The Voice beside fellow coaches  John Legend ,   Michael Bublé  and newcomer  Kelsea Ballerini . His return to the show, which was announced in early June, marks the first time he has come back since his departure in season 16.

At the time of his exit, Levine opened up about his decision to leave , penning a lengthy note on Instagram in May 2019.

“About 8 years ago, Mark Burnett convinced us to sign up for this show where you sit in a big red chair with your back turned away from the singers on the stage. First thank you must go to Mark. ❤️ We had no idea what we were doing or where it was going,” he wrote. “After the first day of shooting, I sat there, stunned. I said to myself 'there’s some magic here. Something is definitely happening.' It went on to be a life shaping experience that will be close to my heart forever.”

In his note, Levine also gave a shout-out to his best bud Blake Shelton , whom he coached alongside since the show's premiere. “Our friendship is and always will be one for the books. Whatever this whole surreal experience was, I’m just happy I got to experience it with you. You’re my brother for life," he wrote to the country star.

In May 2023, Levine  returned to  The Voice  stage  with Maroon 5 to perform their single "Middle Ground."

NBC has yet to announce a premiere date for season 27, but season 26 is set to air this fall.

Bryson Tiller, Lil Tecca, and the best and worst of Summerfest 2024's Day 8 in Milwaukee

On the penultimate day of Summerfest 2024, it rained again. And again. But the music continued on.

Here's the best and worst of what we saw and heard at the Big Gig on its final Friday.

More: Maroon 5 and Adam Levine rest on their laurels at Summerfest in Milwaukee

Bryson Tiller

It’ll almost certainly be bested by fast-rising regional Mexican phenomenon Ivan Cornejo Saturday, but R&B star Bryson Tiller on Friday night drew one of the largest crowds I’ve ever seen at the BMO Pavilion during Summerfest.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Huge clusters of people formed behind the bleachers so far back that the stage itself wasn’t even visible. And when Tiller did make his entrance, so many lit-up phones were pulled out in the lower bowl it was almost as if the house lights had been flicked on.

Tiller’s modest set-up — a couple of low-key dancers, bland visuals, no DJ — lacked the sharp visual components of his sold-out Eagles Ballroom tour stop last year. But this crowd was much, much larger, and dramatically more intense.

Standing on the folded seats in the lower bowl has been stopped at every pavilion show I’ve seen, but nearly everyone climbed onto a seat (and yes, some people tumbled), leaving security vastly outnumbered.

It helps that Tiller, a veteran at this point, has a lot of hits, and his style of trap-seasoned R&B has remained relevant through several trends, with likeminded peers like The Weeknd and fellow Summerfest headliner SZA firmly atop the A-list.

And when Tiller Friday strung together three signature songs back to back — “Exchange,” “Let 'Em Know” and his Rihanna and DJ Khaled collaboration “Wild Thoughts” — the deafening singalongs by the packed crowd, largely made up of women in their teens and early twenties, rivaled the volume of any audience singing I’ve heard in the American Family Insurance Amphitheater this year.

Could that be where Tiller plays the next time he’s in Milwaukee?

— Piet Levy, [email protected]

Once Bryson Tiller's show at the opposite end of Maier Festival Park came to a close, his entire audience sprinted to the UScellular Connection Stage to see hip-hop phenom Lil Tecca. It was exciting and terrifying to witness at the same time.

Although he was late, Tecca was welcomed with open arms by thousands of kids — my son included. While he does fit into the “mumble rap” category, Tecca is a force of his own. The energy was fierce on and off stage. He didn’t rap over his own vocals, which was crazy because this kid was jumping all over the stage. (I was out of breath just watching.) He used the wild-eyed teens as his hype man to fill in the gaps of dead air.

Tecca did perform with a live Auto-Tune effect on his voice to appear more melodic, but it worked for him. Mixed with his infectious and extremely bass-heavy beats, the Auto-Tune was almost called for.

At 21, Lil Tecca puts on an amazing show — lights, smoke and video screen included. Also, I learned that skinny jeans are out and baggy jeans are coming back, according to Tecca’s attire. I’m OK with that. My son, not so much.

— Damon Joy, Special to the Journal Sentinel

The Wallflowers

The rain stopped right before The Wallflowers placidly walked onto the Uline Warehouse stage. But the crowd was massive.

After a few sound glitches, the crew got Jakob Dylan’s voice just right — unintelligible, as it should be. The vibe was mellow with a bevy of head nods and a yelp every now and again. There was not much interaction with the audience, but the latter were satisfied as long as the band kept cranking the hits out, especially from their classic 1996 album “Bringing Down the Horse.”

Overall, the band sounded great. Dylan's voice is still gritty as ever. My personal highlight was his guitarist with a rack of at least eight string instruments. It seemed over the top, until I heard how each instrument melded into each song.

— Damon Joy

His band may be called Wage War, but closing out the Briggs & Stratton Big Backyard Friday, frontman Briton Bond offered a message of unity.

“There is no you, there is no me, there is only us,” the Florida metalcore band’s singer suggested to a smallish but mighty crowd via his signature doomsday growl.

Finding a mutual admiration over pummeling drums, dense guitar shredding, Bond’s blood-curdling screams and the occasional sweetness of Cody Quistad’s melodic, emo-dipped clean vocals, band and fans quickly formed a unified front. But it wasn’t just the music that bonded them but the messages, like the anguish of mental health struggles expressed during “Low” Friday.

Internal wars like those will continue, but for an evening at least, Wage War and their fans experienced some blissful, head-banging harmony together.

— Piet Levy

Paul Cauthen

Bryson Tiller may have drawn one of the biggest crowds I’ve ever seen at the BMO Pavilion on Friday night. But Paul Cauthen performed for one of the smallest headlining audiences I’ve ever seen at the Miller Lite Oasis at the same time. Nearly all of the benches were empty, and the people who were there (excluding stragglers on the outskirts) could have fit inside Turner Hall Ballroom, maybe even Shank Hall or Vivarium.

Then again, Summerfest’s largest (primarily) general-admission stage did seem like an odd place for such an oddball, even if he is an intriguing oddball. He's got the richest baritone to hit country music since Johnny Cash, and with Lana Del Rey making a guest appearance at his Stagecoach set in California this past April, he's got some cool points.

Cauthen Friday showed he’s got plenty more of them, his firecracker five-piece band kicking things off with a medley that flowed from Ennio Morricone’s theme from “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly” into Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2,” before he busted out his deep and smooth voice while twitching across the stage for “Hot Damn.” If some singing voices can be likened to butter, Cauthen’s voice is Alfredo.

But it’s definitely not a mainstream country voice, nor is a song like “Country as (Expletive),” performed for that scant Summerfest crowd Friday, a mainstream country song. No country song with an expletive in its title ever will be, and Cauthen, uncompromising to the core, is no doubt just fine with that. But when he extended his mic out to the crowd Friday so they could sing the song’s mic-drop line “Real cowboys don’t rock to Kenny Chesney,” Cauthen was greeted with complete silence.

“This is my first (expletive) Summerfest,” DC The Don screamed from the UScellular Connection Stage late Friday afternoon, emphasizing a few minutes later that Milwaukee was “my (expletive) city.”

But there were a few moments there that I worried this also would be DC The Don’s last Summerfest.

He shot onto the stage like a bullet, and hopped down into the security barricade, all in the first 10 seconds.

Not even five minutes later, the rapper — whose cinematic, emo-friendly sound made him one of the only Milwaukee natives ever named to XXL’s prestigious ones-to-watch Freshman Class list — hopped over the barricade to rage with fans in the front. I even saw one bro rip his tank top in half, Hulk Hogan style.

He was off the stage and among the people for most of the set after that, posing for selfies and accepting hugs the brief moments he caught his breath.

But about 23 minutes in, security had had enough. After a brief consultation with his DJ, DC told the fans, “They said I can’t go back in the crowd no more,” prompting angry chants of “(Expletive) that (expletive).” DC pleaded near set’s end to jump in the crowd one last time, but it was a firm no. So, raging behind the barricade was a sufficient compromise, judging by the energy from the rapper and the crowd.

“I’ve been waiting on this moment my whole (expletive) life,” DC said at one point. Despite the security scare, his crowd-thrilling set suggested it won’t take long for him to be asked back.

Reyna Tropical

The afternoon rain on Thursday proved to be fortuitous for Milwaukee alternative-pop band Reyna at the covered Aurora Pavilion — but the timing was slightly off for Reyna Tropical, playing the same time slot at the same stage Friday.

A heavy downpour roared through late Friday afternoon, only to leave clear skies and cool temps in its wake before the Mexico-born, Portland, Oregon-based Tropical (stage name for Fabi Reyna) started her Summerfest set. It was her second Milwaukee show since May. It wasn’t a massive crowd, but Reyna’s lush, dancefloor-suited sound — inspired by music from Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Congo and other Latin and African countries, and performed by a DJ and Reyna’s live vocals and occasional guitar — was a pretty irresistible draw.

And Reyna’s stage magnetism, an extension of her songs’ hippie-like perspectives, ensured that her crowd, many seemingly new fans, stayed put — whether she was grooving on guitar for “Niña,” dancing and waving her cowboy hat in the air for “Calor” or unleashing a boisterous grito for “La Madrugada.”

Reyna’s got star power, but she made it clear Friday, through her words and accompanying videos, that her set was “honoring the Afro and Afro-Indigenous people” that inspired her music. She also gave a shout-out to the LGBTQ + community, expressing excitement to learn that Milwaukee, as she put it Friday, was “gay as (expletive).”

PrideFest talent team, start making some calls to book Reyna Tropical for 2025 — although at this rate, Milwaukee may be lucky to see a few more shows before then.

The Baseball Project

Supergroups frequently disappoint — but maybe the term is all wrong.

It’s the word used to describe bands made up of famed musicians from other acts. But the trouble is supergroups rarely come close to reaching the peaks of those musicians’ primary projects.

And, technically, that’s the case for The Baseball Project, which performed for a modest crowd at Uline Warehouse Friday afternoon. The band’s Peter Buck and Mike Mills will always be most admired for their work in R.E.M. Scott McCaughey, too, is best known for his R.E.M. contributions and for leading the Minus 5 (which also features Buck), a band that also includes fellow Project player Steve Wynn, leader of the Dream Syndicate. Linda Pitmon, Wynn’s wife, rounds out the group on drums and vocals.

But the Baseball Project has no grand aspirations. It’s primarily an outlet for these accomplished musicians to hang out and play bar-ready rock songs they wrote about America’s national pastime. The freedom of low expectations allows for some fun curveballs like “Stuff,” a strange song about a pitcher putting a little extra juice on their throw, with Mills supplying quirky vocals and Wynn a feverish guitar solo at Summerfest.

And in addition to McCaughey’s nod to the Brewers with his baseball cap Friday, the band offered a little Milwaukee baseball history lesson via their song “Harvey Haddix,” recounting the tale of the under-heralded Pirates pitcher who, on May 26, 1959, threw 11 perfect innings against the Milwaukee Braves at County Stadium but wound up losing the game anyway. Maybe the Baseball Project can write "The Ballad of Craig Counsell" for their next album.
