KOCHI: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Sri Adi Shankara Janma Bhoomi Kshetram at Kalady on Thursday, the BJP will be taking one more step towards its plan to project Sankaracharya as an icon of cultural integration of Bharat.

The BJP sees Sankaracharya as someone who had united the Hindus and it was former BJP president Amit Shah who gave momentum to the process by describing him as someone who “successfully united Hindus’’ in 2020. Following this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had unveiled a 12-foot-high statue of Sri Sankaracharya at Kedarnath, the samadhi sthal of the seer, on November 5, 2021. Union ministers and BJP leaders had offered prayers at the 100 sacred sites located along the route taken by Adi Sankaracharya during his Bharat parikrama during that occasion.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had launched his campaign for the 2018 assembly elections from Kalady on December 29, 2017. The Madhya Pradesh cabinet has also approved a Rs 2,141-crore project to install a 108-foot-tall statue of Adi Sankaracharya at Omkareshwar on February 9, 2022. As part of this larger plan, National monuments authority chairman Tarun Vijay had approached Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan in June this year seeking support to develop the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya in Kalady as a national monument. Raj Bhavan has sought the opinion of the state government in this regard.

The PM’s visit has increased the possibility of a declaration in this regard. “Sri Adi Sankaracharya is the symbol of Indian intellectual tradition. He was the great unifier of Bharat and he integrated the whole nation. The spiritual foundation laid down by Adi Sankaracharya helped Bharat to survive a series of brutal invasions. Hence, the PM’s visit to Adi Sankara’s birthplace at Kalady during Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav has a historical relevance,” said J Nandakumar, RSS ideologue and national convenor of Prajna Pravah, a Sangh think tank.

Sankaracharya, known for consolidating the Advaita Vedanta school of philosophy had established four mutts -- at Badrinath Jyothir Peeta in the north, Dwarka’s Shardha peeth in the west, Govardhan Peeth at Puri in the east and Sharada Peeth at Sringeri in the south. “Sankaracharya kindled the real Indian renaissance which still lives on. His philosophy negates caste-based discrimination. He professed that even a mere thought of casteism prevents one from attaining Moksha. Those who ran a smear campaign against him for decades seem to have accepted him now. It’s time for Kerala to reclaim his great legacy and identity itself as Adi Shankara’s land,” Nandakumar added.

Retired professor of Sree Sankara College PV Peethambaran also shared similar views. “The four mutts established by Adi Sankara have served as pillars of cultural integration of Bharat. He propounded the philosophy of Advaita establishing the theory that Jeevatma and Paramatma are one. Through the Shanmatham system of worship. he established that the myriad deities of Hinduism are one and the same. He fought against social evils and reformed the rituals at major temples including Guruvayur. By giving the post of chief priest at Badrinath temple to a Kerala Brahmin, he ensured cultural integrity between north and south,” said Peethambaran.

Political critic J Prabhash felt that PM Modi’s visit to Kalady “won’t have any resonance in Kerala politics per se’’. Prabhash, however, added that the events cannot be viewed in isolation. “The Sangh Parivar is trying to mobilise people from various social classes and appropriate social icons like Sreenarayana Guru to Swami Vivekananda… What the RSS has been doing is part of a grand narrative to build bridges between themselves and different social and community groups. But whether the BJP would end up benefiting from this plan, only time will tell,” added Prabhash.

PM Modi’s visit to birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya, “an attempt to rekindle spiritualism” in Kerala

  • The PM will lay the foundation stone for the new building of Veda Padashala at the Sree Shankaracharya Janmabhoomi Temple
  • "Why didn't Congress Prime Ministers visit Sankara's soil," asks Kerala BJP spokesperson

BJP Kerala chief K Surendran said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ‘s visit to Kalady , the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya , will emphasise and showcase the real history and culture of Kerala. “The real legacy of Kerala is that of Jagatguru Sankaracharya,” he added.

Though commissioning of indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant is one of the major events on the itinerary of PM Modi’s visit in Kerala, BJP leaders in the state are excited over his arrival in Kalady near Kochi, the birthplace of one of the greatest philosophers Adi Sankara. Though born in Kerala and is believed to have attained Samadhi by the age of 32, Sankaracharya had travelled across the country to spread the teaching of Vedas and established ashrams in various corners of the country.

Last year, the PM had inaugurated Shri Adi Sankaracharya Samadhi at the premises of the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand, which was damaged in the 2013 flood, and also unveiled the statue of Shri Adi Sankaracharya at the Samadhi.

At Kalady, the PM will lay the foundation stone for the new building of Veda Padhashala at the Sree Sankaracharya Janmabhoomi Temple where he is expected to arrive at 6 pm on Thursday. Sringeri Mutt manager Subramanya Iyer and Kanchi Mutt manager KS Venkateswaran will receive the Prime Minister with ‘poornakumbham’.

Political scientist G Gopakumar said the PM’s visit should not be seen through the eyes of petty politics. “It is rather a symbolic visit. It should be seen as an attempt to rekindle spiritualism. Without spirituality, all religions are communal. It is important for our country to revive its spiritual history,” he said.

Senior journalist and political commentator NP Chekkutty said that Sankaracharya was one of the pioneers who laid the foundation for an organised Hindu community at a time the country was divided into numerous small kingdoms.

“It is unimaginable to learn that he had travelled to far away places like Kashmir and Gujarat and established ashrams in various corners of the country at that age. He was instrumental in reviving vedic Hinduism at a time when it was facing a threat from Buddhism and Jainism. More than establishing ashrams across the country, Sankaracharya was the pioneer in laying a philosophical foundation. BJP which is relying on the principles of Hindutva, will definitely pay tributes to Shankaracharya, a philosopher of unparalleled stature. I think even other political parties like LDF and UDF too have recognised his importance and that is why we have Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kerala,” Chekkutty said.

State unit of BJP, however, is likely to see Modi’s visit as a political statement. Hailing PM Modi for visiting Kalady, BJP Kerala spokesperson B Gopalakrishnan said he was the first PM to visit the birthplace of Sankaracharya after Morarji Desai. “Let me ask, why didn’t Congress Prime Ministers visit Sankara’s soil?,” he tweeted.

Kalady: Adi Shankaracharyas Birthplace

Table of Contents

History of Kalady

Kalady is a small town located in the state of Kerala, in southern India. It is renowned as the birthplace of Adi Shankaracharya, one of the most influential philosophers and theologians in Hinduism. The town holds immense historical and religious significance, attracting devotees and spiritual seekers from all over the world.

The origins of Kalady

Kalady has a rich and ancient history that dates back over many centuries. According to folklore and religious scriptures, the town has been associated with mythological tales and the presence of divine beings.

Legend has it that Kalady was once known as “Brindavan,” a place dedicated to Lord Krishna’s divine play. The area was believed to be a lush and serene landscape, full of beauty and tranquility. Over time, the town came to be known as “Kalady,” which means “footprint” in the local Malayalam language, owing to the footprints of Lord Krishna that were believed to be embedded in the region’s soil.

Significance of Kalady in Hinduism

Kalady holds immense significance in Hinduism due to its association with Adi Shankaracharya. Adi Shankaracharya was a philosopher and theologian who lived during the 8th century CE and is widely recognized for his contributions to the Advaita Vedanta philosophy.

According to Hindu mythology, Adi Shankaracharya was born in Kalady to devout Brahmin parents. His birth in this holy town is believed to have been divinely ordained, as he was destined to become one of the most important figures in Hindu philosophy.

Adi Shankaracharya’s connection to Kalady

Adi Shankaracharya’s connection to Kalady goes beyond just being his birthplace. He spent his early years in the town and received his initial spiritual education here. It was in Kalady that Adi Shankaracharya’s spiritual journey began, laying the foundation for his later contributions to Hinduism.

Adi Shankaracharya is associated with the establishment of Advaita Vedanta, a non-dualistic philosophical system that emphasizes the unity of the individual soul (Atman) with the ultimate reality (Brahman). His teachings and philosophical works have had a profound impact on Hinduism and continue to influence spiritual seekers and scholars to this day.

Adi Shankaracharya and His Contributions

Brief biography of adi shankaracharya.

Adi Shankaracharya, also known as Shankara Bhagavatpada, was born in the town of Kalady in the 8th century CE. He was a brilliant scholar from a young age and quickly garnered a reputation for his exceptional intellect and spiritual insights.

At the tender age of eight, Adi Shankaracharya left his home to become a student under the tutelage of his guru, Govindapada. Under his guidance, Adi Shankaracharya studied various religious texts and philosophical treatises.

Adi Shankaracharya’s teachings and philosophy

Adi Shankaracharya’s teachings and philosophy are predominantly based on the principles of Advaita Vedanta. He posited that the ultimate reality is non-dualistic, emphasizing the oneness of all existence. According to him, the individual soul (Atman) and the supreme reality (Brahman) are essentially one and the same.

Modi Calls Muslims ‘Infiltrators’ Who Would Take India’s Wealth

The direct language used against the country’s largest minority was a contrast to the image Prime Minister Narendra Modi presents on the world stage.

Narendra Modi waves from a stage, as several people stand behind him.

By Alex Travelli and Suhasini Raj

Reporting from New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Muslims “infiltrators” who would take India’s wealth if his opponents gained power — unusually direct and divisive language from a leader who normally lets others do the dirtiest work of polarizing Hindus against Muslims.

Mr. Modi, addressing voters in the state of Rajasthan, referred to a remark once made by Manmohan Singh, his predecessor from the opposition Indian National Congress Party. Mr. Singh, Mr. Modi claimed, had “said that Muslims have the first right to the wealth of the nation. This means they will distribute this wealth to those who have more children, to infiltrators.”

Mr. Modi aimed his emotional appeal at women, addressing “my mothers and sisters” to say that his Congress opponents would take their gold and give it to Muslims.

Modi Calls Muslims ‘Infiltrators’ in Speech During India Elections

Prime minister narendra modi of india was criticized by the opposition for remarks he made during a speech to voters in rajasthan state..

I’m sorry, this is a very disgraceful speech made by the prime minister. But, you know, the fact is that people realize that when he says the Congress Party is going to take all your wealth and give it to the Muslims, that this is just a nakedly communal appeal which normally any civilized election commission would disallow and warn the candidate for speaking like this.

Video player loading

Implications like these — that Muslims have too many babies, that they are coming for Hindus’ wives and daughters, that their nationality as Indian is itself in doubt — are often made by representatives of Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P.

Mr. Modi’s use of such language himself, as he campaigns for a third term in office, raised alarm that it could inflame right-wing vigilantes who target Muslims , and brought up questions about what had prompted his shift in communication style. Usually, Mr. Modi avoids even using the word “Muslims,” coyly finding ways to refer indirectly to India’s largest minority group, of 200 million people.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress party, called Mr. Modi’s remarks “hate speech.” Asaduddin Owaisi, who represents the only national party for Muslims, lamented how “common Hindus are made to fear Muslims while their wealth is being used to enrich others.”

Tom Vadakkan, a spokesman for the B.J.P., said that Mr. Modi’s speech was being misinterpreted. “This is not about our compatriots, the Muslims,” he said. Mr. Modi was talking only about “infiltrators,” according to Mr. Vadakkan.

The prime minister’s fiery oration, delivered in 100-degree heat in the town of Banswara in arid Rajasthan, marked a contrast to the image he presents in international contexts.

During a visit to the White House in June, Mr. Modi said there was “no question of discrimination” in India. When he played host to the Group of 20 summit in New Delhi three months later, he chose the theme “the world is one family”(in Sanskrit, the primary liturgical language of orthodox Hinduism).

He put his own face on soft-power outreach programs like World Yoga Day, broadcast to Times Square, using it to present a Hindu-centric India as a benign “teacher to the world.”

Campaigns that divide Hindus and Muslims can be useful in animating the hard-right Hindu base of Mr. Modi’s otherwise broad-based electorate, especially in places like Banswara, where Hindus outnumber Muslims by three to one.

With his remarks, Mr. Modi may have been trying to close a divide that has opened among Hindus in Rajasthan over whether to support the B.J.P., with one prominent group holding protests over comments made by a party official.

But the prime minister’s speech was also clearly intended for a wider audience; he shared a clip on his official social media channels.

The B.J.P. remains the favorite to win another parliamentary majority when six weeks of voting concludes on June 1 and ballots are counted three days later. Mr. Kharge, the Congress party president, called Mr. Modi’s speech — perhaps hopefully — a sign of desperation, adding that opposition candidates must be faring well in the early stages of balloting.

Neerja Chowdhury, a columnist and the author of “How Prime Ministers Decide,” echoed Mr. Kharge, saying that, in her view, “voters are expressing their dissatisfaction much more openly this time.” The B.J.P. is capable of a swift course correction, she added, because “they get feedback very quickly.”

Rahul Gandhi, the public face of the Congress party , said that Mr. Modi’s comments had been intended as a diversion from subjects that trouble ordinary voters, like joblessness and inflation.

That the prime minister alluded to religion at all in his speech drew complaints that he may have violated India’s election rules.

Candidates are supposed to be barred from asking for votes in the name of religion or caste. But B.J.P. leaders regularly invoke Hindu deities during campaign rallies. The country’s Election Commission, which enforces the rules, has taken little action against the party, even as it has moved against members of other parties in similar cases.

Uddhav Thackeray, a former ally of Mr. Modi’s who is now running against the B.J.P., declared that he would now ignore an Election Commission order to remove the word “Hindu” from his own party’s campaign song.

The basis for Mr. Modi’s attack was a 22-second excerpt from a statement that Mr. Singh, a Sikh economist who was the prime minister before Mr. Modi, made in 2006. Mr. Singh had been listing many of the traditionally disadvantaged groups in India, including lower-caste Hindus and tribal populations, and “in particular the Muslim community,” and said that all should share equitably in the nation’s wealth.

Since Mr. Modi took office in 2014, Muslims haven’t had a proportional share of India’s steady economic and social development . Just one of the 430 candidates the B.J.P. is fielding in the current election is Muslim.

Mr. Singh’s speech from 2006 seems old now, but it was made just four years after riots in the state of Gujarat under the watch of Mr. Modi. Hindus and Muslims hacked and burned one another and at least 1,000 died, most of them Muslims.

An earlier version of this article misstated the number of Muslim candidates that the B.J.P. is fielding in India’s current election. It is one, not zero.

Modi accused of hate speech for calling Muslims 'infiltrators' at a rally days into India's election

COP28 In Dubai High Level Segment

NEW DELHI — India ’s main opposition party is accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of hate speech after he called Muslims “infiltrators” and used some of his most incendiary rhetoric to date about the minority faith in an election rally days after the country began its weekslong general election .

At the rally on Sunday in the western state of Rajasthan, Modi said that when the Congress party was in government, “they said Muslims have the first right over the country’s resources.” If it returns to power, the party “will gather all your wealth and distribute it among those who have more children,” he said as the crowd applauded.

“They will distribute it among infiltrators,” he continued, saying, “Do you think your hard-earned money should be given to infiltrators?”

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a spokesperson for Congress, called the prime minister’s remarks “deeply, deeply objectionable” and said the party on Monday had sought action from the Election Commission of India, which oversees the six-week voting period, which began Friday.

The remarks drew fierce criticism for peddling anti-Muslim tropes, and for breaking election rules that bar candidates from engaging in any activity that aggravates religious tensions. The Election Commission of India’s model code of conduct forbids candidates to “appeal to caste or communal feelings” to secure votes.

Asaduddin Owaidi, a Muslim lawmaker and president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen party, said on Sunday: “Modi today called Muslims infiltrators and people with many children. Since 2002 till this day, the only Modi guarantee has been to abuse Muslims and get votes.”

Critics of Modi, an avowed Hindu nationalist, say India’s tradition of diversity and secularism has come under attack since his party won power in 2014 and returned for a second term in 2019. They accuse Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party of fostering religious intolerance and sometimes even violence. The party denies the accusation and says its policies benefit all Indians.

But rights groups say that attacks against minorities have become more brazen under Modi. Scores of Muslims have been lynched by Hindu mobs over allegations of eating beef or smuggling cows, an animal considered holy to Hindus. Muslim businesses have been boycotted, their homes and businesses have been bulldozed and places of worship set on fire. Some open calls have been made for their genocide .

Modi’s remarks on Sunday were based on a 2006 statement by then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of the Congress party. Singh said that India’s lower castes, tribes, women and, “in particular the Muslim minority” were empowered to share in the country’s development equally.

“They must have the first claim on resources,” Singh had said. A day later, his office clarified that Singh was referring to all of the disadvantaged groups.

Modi and his party are expected to win the election, according to most surveys. The results come out on June 4.

The Congress party’s president, Mallikarjun Kharge, described Modi’s comments as “hate speech.” “In the history of India, no prime minister has lowered the dignity of his post as much as Modi has,” Kharge wrote on social media platform X.

In its petition to the election commission, the party said that Modi and the BJP have repeatedly used religion, religious symbols and sentiments in their election campaign with impunity. “These actions have been further bolstered by the commission’s inaction in penalizing the prime minister and the BJP for their blatant violations of electoral laws,” it said.

The commission’s code of conduct is not legally binding on its own, but it can issue notices and suspend campaigners for a certain amount of time over violations.

“We decline comment,” a spokesperson for the commission told the Press Trust of India news agency on Monday.

In his speech, Modi also referred to a Hindu nationalist myth that Muslims were overtaking the Hindu population by having more children. Hindus make up 80% of India’s 1.4 billion population, while the country’s 200 million Muslims make up 14%. Official data shows that fertility rates among Muslims have dropped the fastest among religious groups in recent decades, from 4.4 in 1992-93 to 2.3 between 2019-21, just a bit higher than Hindus at 1.94.

Modi’s BJP has previously referred to Muslims as infiltrators and cast them as illegal migrants who crossed into India from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Several states run by the BJP have also made laws that restrict interfaith marriage, citing the myth of “love jihad,” an unproven conspiracy theory used by Hindu hard-line groups to accuse Muslim men of converting Hindu women by marriage.

Through it all, Modi has maintained a conspicuous silence, which critics say has emboldened some of his most extreme supporters and enabled more hate speech against Muslims.

Musk delays India visit and meeting with Modi as Tesla, SpaceX eye huge market

Elon Musk waves

Elon Musk postponed a visit to India which would have included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he must tend to pressing issues at Tesla Inc.

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” the billionaire said in a post on X . He had been scheduled to visit for two days — April 21 and 22 — to  announce plans  to enter the Indian market.

The decision to postpone comes after a hectic week at Tesla. Early Sunday, Musk announced in a memo to the company’s more than 140,000 employees that he was reducing headcount by more than 10% globally. Two top executives also departed.

On Wednesday, the company said it will ask shareholders to vote again on a $56 billion compensation package for Musk that was voided by a Delaware court in January. And on Friday, Tesla recalled almost 3,900 Cybertruck pickups and cut the price of most of its cars in the US by $2,000 as sales slow and inventories rise.

The company will also report first-quarter earnings on April 23, having already reported vehicle deliveries that  missed estimates  by a wide margin. The stock has fallen more than 40% this year, dropping the automaker’s market value to less than $470 billion.

Musk’s planned India visit was critical in terms of timing for both him and Modi. India has kicked off voting for its national elections where Modi is seeking a third term, citing the nation’s economic rise. Investments from billionaires like Musk would burnish his appeal among voters.

Musk is seeking permission for SpaceX’s Starlink to operate in what will be by far its biggest market. Starlink has already received assurances from India’s government that it will be able to start operating in the country as soon as the third quarter of this year, Bloomberg reported  earlier .

Tesla has also been trying to break into India for years, but high import taxes were a deterrent — something Musk has pointed out repeatedly. India last month lowered import taxes on EVs from foreign carmakers that pledge to invest at least 41.5 billion rupees ($497 million) and start EV production from a local factory within three years.

A sizable investment by Tesla would enable Musk to tap into India’s burgeoning electric-vehicle market and counter slowing demand for EVs elsewhere. Tesla watchers, however, would want to see action on the ground after witnessing delays in previously announced projects such as constructing a massive plant in Mexico.
