LONDON — Maren Kroymann’s Berlin-based sales company M-Appeal has picked up world sales rights to “ Paradise Trips .” The film is the feature film debut of music-video and commercials director Raf Reyntjens, whose video for rapper Stromae’s track “ Papaoutai ” has attracted more than 270 million views on YouTube .
The movie centers on bus driver Mario, who has spent his life shuttling senior citizens to their holiday destinations. Today, he is stuck in retirement, bored with his wife and with life in general. He decides to accept one last trip. Only this time his passengers are not the elderly, but a motley crew of partygoers on their way to a music festival in Croatia. Mario takes an immediate dislike to the alternative youth and their loud music. His last journey soon turns into a mind-bending trip that not only confronts him with his prejudices, but also with his long-lost son.
Reyntjens wrote and directed two short films, both starring Matthias Schoenaerts. “A Message From Outer Space” was shown at several international film festivals, and “Tunnelrat” was made part of a exhibition at the MoMa in New York, “The Great War: A Cinematic Legacy.”
Popular on Variety
“Paradise Trips” receives its Belgium release on Aug. 19, and in the Netherlands on Sept. 24. Cineart handles distribution in both territories.
Reyntjens’ original story was developed into a screenplay at Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam. M-Appeal has been tracking the project since it was in the Works in Progress section at the Holland Film Meetings. The movie is produced by Frank Van Passel and Ivy Vanhaecke at Caviar.
Kroymann, CEO of M-Appeal, said: “We all fell in love with ‘Paradise Trips’ the moment we saw it. We have been looking for just such a charming film with a cross-over potential, appealing to both young and middle-aged audiences at the same time.”
Van Haecke said: “We believe M-Appeal has the right vibe that perfectly fits the spirit of our movie. We look forward working with them to bring ‘Paradise Trips’ to its audience worldwide.”

Paradise Trips is a 2015 movie directed by Raf Reyntjens. It stars Gene Bervoets, Noortje Herlaar, and Pascal Maetens in lead roles. The movie is a quirky, dark comedy that takes the audience on a surreal and psychedelic road trip. The film revolves around the life of Mario, played by Gene Bervoets, who is a bus driver for a Belgian tour company. He is a middle-aged man who is going through a midlife crisis. He is deeply dissatisfied with his monotonous routine and is struggling to find meaning in his life. Mario is assigned to take a group of seniors on a bus tour to a Croatian music festival. He looks forward to earning some extra money and perhaps having fun at the festival. However, things go awry as his passengers turn out to be a bunch of misfits who are more interested in partying and enjoying drugs than in sightseeing.
As the journey progresses, Mario is forced to confront his inner turmoil and question his beliefs. He is exposed to the eccentricities and idiosyncrasies of his passengers, which leads him to reflect on his own existence. He bonds with people who are vastly different from him and learns to appreciate life in a new way. Along the way, he also gets in touch with his hidden desires and rediscovers his passion for music.
The film is a commentary on the human condition, and the characters are an allegory for the societal norms and expectations that people are expected to conform to. Mario, the protagonist, is a symbol of the average person who is imprisoned by his/her mundane routine and is looking for a way to break free. The seniors on the bus trip represent the outliers of society who have chosen to embrace life in their own unique ways. The film celebrates individuality and challenges the viewers to re-examine their priorities in life.
The pace of the movie is slow, but deliberate. The cinematography beautifully captures the stunning landscapes of the Croatian countryside, and the psychedelic scenes add to the movie's surreal atmosphere. The film's score also deserves a special mention for its eclectic mix of the music of different genres, which successfully conveys the movie's underlying theme.
The acting is superb, with Gene Bervoets giving a standout performance as Mario. His portrayal of a man grappling with his inner demons is both heartwarming and poignant. The supporting cast is also excellent, with Noortje Herlaar delivering a standout performance as a free-spirited woman who befriends Mario.
In conclusion, Paradise Trips is a movie about self-discovery and the search for meaning in life. It is a refreshing departure from the conventional Hollywood fare and will appeal to fans of indie cinema. The film's surreal atmosphere and eccentric characters make for an immersive and thought-provoking experience. It is a must-watch for anyone who is looking for a movie that challenges the status quo and celebrates individuality.
Paradise Trips is a 2015 comedy with a runtime of 1 hour and 33 minutes. It has received moderate reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 6.3.

Paradise trips.
Feature film, 2015, 93 min.
Holiday bus driver Mario has spent his entire life shuttling old age pensioners to the sunny south. On the eve of his own retirement, the conservative man reluctantly takes a motley crew of young partygoers to a festival in Croatia. Dreadlocks, blowers, anarchists; he loathes them. In this tragicomic drama, his final trip obviously does not go as the surly Mario had planned. Conflicts with his passengers soon flare up. What is more, the driver is painfully confronted with his own prejudices - and his lost son.

Film Review: ‘Paradise Trips’
An estranged father and son are forced to interact at a Burning Man-like counterculture festival in music-video director Raf Reyntjens ’ astute feature debut, “ Paradise Trips .” Initially hobbled from full engagement by two leading characters who are all too convincingly unpleasant to be around, the pic earns their (and the viewers’) rapprochement by burying its fundamental generation-gapped, dysfunctional-family formulaics in low-key observation, plus a welcome late dose of druggy absurdism. Already released in home territories, it could pick up modest offshore sales in various formats while marking Reyntjens as a talent to watch.
Dutch tour-bus company owner/driver Mario (Gene Bervoets) is miserable in retirement, cranky and uncommunicative with wife Linda (Tania Van der Sanden) despite her valiant attempts to engage him. Rather than accept her proposal that they take a vacation together, he leaps at his former business partner’s emergency request that he take over a group rental trip to Croatia.
It’s an assignment, however, to which he could hardly be more ill-suited, personality-wise: He’s a culturally conservative control freak now stuck driving a busload of unkempt, disrespectful twentysomething ravers to a week-long electronica festival. The journey is bad enough; upon arriving, he’s even more disgusted by so much latter-day “dirty hippie”-dom, despite the efforts of Esmeralda (Marie Louise Steihns), an Earth Mother-ly woman his own age, to chill his hot-tempered vibes. A small bright spot is his sympathetic encounter with Sunny (Cedric Van Den Abbeele), the inaptly named young son of easygoing rental-group leader Miranda (Noortje Herlaar). Sunny is equally unhappy to be here, pronouncing Mario “the first normal person I’ve seen.”
As a result of this tentative paternal bond, Mario is even more horrified when he realizes Sunny’s father is in fact his own long-estranged son, Jim (Jeroen Perceval). (At this point the film rewinds for a few minutes to show how this unwelcome reunion accidentally came about, and how Jim had already been actively hiding from his father since the journey’s start.) There are years of bad blood between the two men, who, despite wildly different surfaces, are all too similarly angry, sulky and self-righteous, as well as bad parents. (The mutually goading dynamic between Sunny and Jim could hardly be worse.) After an ugly initial confrontation, Mario storms off, taking his bus with him. But he only gets so far before concern over the grandson he didn’t know he had draws him back.
“Paradise Trips” resists the sentimentality inherent in this kind of family-wound-healing exercise, almost going too far in making Jim and Mario such exasperating man-brats. But the refusal to hit easy emotional marks pays off in an eventual, fragile father-son reconciliation that is touching precisely for being so hard-won. The caustic humor and casual narrative feel also heighten the impact of an inventive, delightful late passage when Mario’s emotional constipation is loosened by an unwitting dose of recreational drugs — perhaps the best, most knowingly handled such sequence of hallucinogenic surrealism since Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock.”
Lacking funds to stage its own music festival, the pic was largely, stealthily shot amid actual attendees at the 2014 Lost Theory Festival in rural Gracac, Croatia. (The 2016 edition is moving to northern Spain, however.) The logistical challenges must have been considerable, but the results possess a shaggy authenticity that only enhances the fish-out-of-water concept. Natch, the fest’s sights and techno sounds add a great deal of color. But they’re always kept in service to the story, never used as a flashy foreground.
Making his feature debut after several shorts, as well as numerous commercials and some high-profile music videos, Reyntjens handles a very good cast and sometimes tricky tonal balance with impressive assurance. Tech and design elements are all first-rate, the most conspicuous (but still modestly scaled) being the digital f/x for Mario’s presumably lysergic “trip.”

Death in Paradise's Ralf Little issues 'explanation' amid fan concern over missed radio interview
The star stepped down from his role as di neville parker in series 13.
Death in Paradise star Ralf Little has taken to social media with an explanation for why he failed to appear for an interview on Radio X on Thursday.
The actor was due to sit down with host Toby Tarrant to chat about the final few live shows of his podcast tour, Two Pints With Will and Ralf 2024 April Fools Tour , but failed to show up.
During the broadcast, Toby, who was filling in for Chris Moyles on the breakfast show, told listeners: "All morning I've talked about how he's regarded as one of the nicest and loveliest men in the business, and he stood me up."
His co-host Dominic Byrne chimed in: "There's been a diary issue, hasn't there? I think," prompting Toby to speculate: "I mean, there's two options here. I reckon either we'll get a message saying, 'We thought it was tomorrow'."
In a video posted to Instagram on Thursday, Ralf explained it was an innocent mistake and reassured fans that "everything is fine".
MORE DEATH IN PARADISE
"Hi, just something to clear up because some people have been a little concerned," he began. "I was supposed to be on Radio X and Heart Radio this morning to talk about my podcast live show, which has its final few shows this weekend, but I wasn't on the radio.
"Both Heart Radio and Radio X said, 'We have Ralf Little coming in to talk later,' and I wasn't there, didn't turn up."
Sharing the reason for his absence, Ralf continued: "Now the reason for that is, I wish I had a funny anecdote to tell you but I don't, it's more rubbish than that. I have stupid, fat thumbs and typed the wrong date into my calendar. I thought it was tomorrow morning and it was in fact this morning.
"I was in the gym and when I came out, I had a lot of messages going, 'Are you ok? You were supposed to be on the radio this morning, is everything alright? Are you alive? '
"I am ok, everything is fine. I'm just a fool," he said, before apologising to both radio stations and fans who were expecting to hear from him. "Hopefully, we'll get to do it again sometime and I'll turn up," he added.
It comes just a month after Ralf announced his departure from Death in Paradise after four years of playing its lead detective, Neville Parker.
During an appearance on ITV's Lorraine earlier this month, Ralf shared the reason for his departure after four seasons. "This last series was always going to be my last series," explained the 44-year-old. "I spoke to the BBC and Red Planet, the production company, and we all agreed.
"I f it was just a heart decision I would have wanted to do it for 20 more years . But just for the show and for my character Neville it just sort of felt like his story was finished and his journey deserved to be completed. He deserved a happy ending and it just felt right."

The world's largest red deer stags are the prized attraction for international hunters visiting New ... [+] Zealand.
Long before Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy put New Zealand on everyone’s travel list, hunters and anglers long coveted the island nation’s riches of fish and game. It is a sportsman’s Jurassic Park, where beasts grow to near-mythic dimensions and the stunning landscape inspired the fictitious land of Middle-earth.
New Zealand’s temperate climate, rich volcanic soils, lack of apex predators, and lush pasturelands proved the perfect habitat on which to introduce all manner of the Old World’s famous game—especially red deer.
New Zealand's many mountain-framed lakes provide stunning backdrops for many adventures.
In the early 1900s, the red deer, chamois from the Alps, fallow deer, the large-bodied sambar deer, reclusive rusa stags, Himalayan tahr (a mountain goat-like animal), elk from North America, and wild boar were all brought to New Zealand, a country that originally had but one species of mammal—a bat.
Essentially, game keepers and biologists saw New Zealand as a blank canvas on which to create a wild game masterpiece, so they did. Without natural predators nor severe winters to slow the population growth of the country’s new cast of horned and antlered creatures populations of many of the introduced species exploded. So prolific were the red deer, for instance, that a few decades ago game managers were forced to conduct extensive culling operations to bring the deer numbers back to levels the habitat could support.

John Scurr poses with a pair of pukeko or swamphens, one of several indigenous game birds found in ... [+] New Zealand.
Today, these same red deer have become a popular draw for hunters from across the world—especially Americans. Thousands of U.S. hunters travel to New Zealand annually to partake in big game hunting.
“Most hunters know of New Zealand as the home of the world’s biggest stags,” says John Scurr , a Kiwi native and veteran hunting operator who specializes in arranging custom hunting and fishing experiences for all manner of the nation’s fish and game. “But we have many game species that are thriving here on both the North and South islands.”
Wine tours are just one of many diversions available to visiting sportsmen.
For Scurr, however, it’s about customizing diverse New Zealand tour packages that allow visiting hunters and anglers to immerse themselves in a wide range of attractions and activities that complement rod and gun adventures.
“New Zealand is a his and her (and family) destination, so if a hunter wants to bring a non-hunting spouse or friend here,” says Scurr, “we can arrange a wide assortment of activities from helicopter junkets to volcanos and glaciers, lake excursions, wine tours, glacier climbing, jet boating, hiking and biking, bungy jumping, parasailing, or drives through the countryside to explore any number of our inviting communities.”
New Zealand's wealth of breathtaking scenery is reason enough to visit.
Sportsmen’s dollars, then, are helping support the entire tourism economy, the nation’s second largest industry behind agriculture. In addition, hunting provides the financial incentive to keep lands wild, supporting myriad non-game species that depend on the same cover as deer and other game.
“Rather than sitting in a lodge for a week and then returning home,” says Scurr, “many of our sporting clients want to experience more of New Zealand before they go. And most of our hunting areas are conveniently located near other great attractions.”
The bustling and beautiful town of Wanaka with a population of some 12,000 is located on the shores of stunning Lake Wanaka, a 74-square-mile body of water, and is home base for Scurr’s South Island adventures.
Scurr poses with accomplished Oklahoma hunter Suzie Brewster and her giant stag.
“We put some of our hunters up in well-appointed lakeside condos,” he says, “and we dine in restaurants that are all within easy walking distance. And our hunting areas are located just a ten-minute drive from town. This has been a very popular package for us as non-hunting spouses can enjoy a wide range of amenities offered in Wanaka (spas, shops, restaurants, tours, art, and cultural opportunities) and then come together with their husbands after the hunt to share an evening on the town.”
Nearly as famous as its stag hunting, New Zealand is a celebrated fly-fishing destination for outsized rainbow and brown trout. The plethora of gin-clear rivers and lakes along with a handful of famous lodges, put the country high on most trout anglers’ must-visit list.
The inviting and bustling community of Wanaka is home base for Scurr's South Island offerings.
Adding some bird hunting to the menu is a simple proposition as well, for New Zealand has a mix of endemic and introduced game bird species including the highly prized (and striking) paradise duck.
For hunters who don’t want the hassle of flying with their own firearms, Scurr has a wide assortment of rifles and shotguns for rent. “We find that most hunters choose to use our guns because it saves a lot of headaches dealing with gun licensing and customs. But if a hunter would rather bring his favorite rifle, we’ll assist with the permit process as well.”
For Scurr, sharing the best of New Zealand is his life's passion.
For Scurr, it’s about sharing the wealth of sporting and recreational opportunities that his native New Zealand has to offer. “We have a unique landscape and with that comes special opportunities for visiting sportsmen and others,” he says. “And when someone books with us we want them to go home and share the experience with their friends as they plan their next adventure to New Zealand.”
