Higher than the ever-famous Niagra Falls and just a few minutes from the outskirts of downtown Quebec City: a visit to Montmorency Falls is a guaranteed must on any visit to Quebec’s capital city. Here’s a guide to visiting Montmorency Falls, and a brief overview of the water feature’s history.

The falls themselves were named by Samuel de Champlain for the Duke of Montmorency in 1613. And the Battle of Beauport, which is also known as the Battle of Montmorency, was fought in the area between the British and the French in the mid-18th-century.

In more recent times, the Falls have been used as a filming location for the 1947 movie, Whispering City. Other parts of the film were shot in nearby old town Quebec. Today, the falls make for one of the best day trips from downtown Quebec and are well worth a visit for nature lovers and thrill seekers alike.

What are the Montmorency Falls (Chute Montmorency)?

Best time to visit montmorency falls, how to get to montmorency falls from quebec city or montreal, enjoyed reading this easy day trip guide to montmorency falls pin it now, read it again later:.

Located in the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency (Montmorency Falls Park), the waterfall is the highest in the Province of Quebec and the eighth highest in Canada. Though not as wide as Niagra Falls, the falls are 83 metres high, meaning that they’re some 30 metres higher than those of Niagra.

Part of the Montmorency River, the falls are the last stop before the water drains into the Saint Lawrence River. The St Lawrence itself is a historically important river which was once vital in the fur and fishing trades during the 16th-century.

Today, the falls are now home to a via ferrata, impressive suspension bridge, and plenty of nearby hiking trails. For those feeling a little more adventurous, a visit to the Falls gives the possibility of going on a 300-metre wire zip line and climbing one of three nearby via ferrata (iron way) routes.

Once there, there’s also a cable car offering panoramic views, as well as a restaurant and visitor centre. In the winter months, there’s snowshoeing, while at other times, hiking trails (which are often closed due to ice in the winter) and children’s playgrounds are open.

Although the falls can be visited year round, it’s worth noting that the best time to visit is probably just outside peak season; i.e. in the late spring or early autumn. This way, it’s possible to enjoy the warm, sunny weather, all the while enjoying the scenery.

After all, of all the reasons to visit Canada , the breathtaking landscapes rate among the top. Should you opt to visit the falls in the Summer, it’s worth noting that there’s an annual international fireworks competition held on an annual basis. In the warmer months, the iron content in the waterbed means that the water glows slightly yellow.

There are several ways to get to the falls from various locations across Quebec, including from the Southern city of Montreal. From downtown Quebec City, it’s around 9 miles to reach the falls, which roughly translates to a fifteen-minute drive. And once at the falls, there’s a paid car park.

In terms of public transportation, from Quebec city, there are several bus routes which run door to door and the total journey time is roughly 45 minutes. Otherwise, you can always consider booking a guided excursion to Montmorency Falls. For example,  this direct shuttle bus from Old Town Quebec  will take you straight to the falls.

At 272 feet (83 m), it is 30 meters higher than the iconic Niagara Falls but has less volume than Niagara. The falls and river are part of the Parc de la Chute-Montmorency. Water flows through the Montmorency River, over the waterfall, and into the St.Lawrence River. It is the only Quebec City waterfall.

When to Visit Montmorency Falls

Montmorency Falls Park is open year-round. The best time to visit the falls will depend on which season is your personal favourite for admiring nature. Depending on which season you choose to visit the falls, different activities will be available.

Summer activities in Parc de la Chute-Montmorency include hiking, biking, and ziplining. Whichever month you choose to visit, Montmorency Falls is a fun activity in Quebec City enjoyable in every season.

fall in quebec

The falls are especially beautiful in the autumn , with the fall colours taking over the trees. The tree leaves become vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow and is a beautiful sight to see. I chose to visit Quebec City in the fall , and enjoyed seeing the fall foliage beginning while breathing the crisp fall air.

And if you have extra time on your Quebec road trip, stop in Montreal for a few days to try some of Montreal’s must-eat restaurants .

Montmorency Falls in Winter

Montmorency Falls is open in winter and becomes a winter wonderland. Splashes from the waterfall freeze and form a natural ice cone at the base of the falls. The park remains open, but the staircase closes for safety purposes. The cable car operates weather-dependent during the winter months. When no facilities are available, the parking is free.

Snowshoes are available for rental and can be used to enjoy the upper trails and on the suspension bridge. For the more adventurous, there is ice climbing available. If you are looking for fun winter activities in Quebec City , visit Montmorency Falls.

How to Vi sit Montmorency Falls – The Best Ways to View the Falls

There are a variety of ways to experience Chute-Montmorency, including riding a cable car, walking over the suspension bridge, from the staircase lookout, the promenade at the waterfall’s base, or ziplining in front of the falls.

montmorency falls from quebec city - suspension bridge

Suspension Bridge

Along the top edge of the falls, the boardwalk will take you to a lookout and the suspension bridge. The suspension bridge crosses the river along the top of the falls, where you can be close to the waterfall’s edge. Walking across the suspension bridge is a must do at Montmorency Falls .  The bridge is very stable and not bouncy like some bridges. Besides the incredible view of the falls, the suspension bridge provides views of the St.Lawrence River and Quebec City.

montmorency falls cable car

Cable Car

There are cable car rides available to transport people between the top and bottom of the waterfall, offering a scenic view during the ride. Cable car tickets are single rides in one direction. During the ride, you will see the falls, in addition to beautiful views of Île d’Orléans, the St.Lawrence River, and Quebec City. The ride lasts for a few minutes.

If you do not wish to ride the cable car, you can use the stairs or drive between the top and bottom of Montmorency Falls. During my visit to the falls, I used the stairs and drove. I soon fell in love with cable cars in Lisbon , and wish I rode the one here, so I will definitely ride the cable car when I return for another visit to this beautiful waterfall.

stairs at montmorency falls park

Montmorency Falls Stair s

Within Montmorency Park is a staircase leading to the bottom of the falls, with an observation deck with a few different levels offering different views of the falls. The staircase was built along the cliffside and contains 487 steps. Be prepared to take breaks, and admire the falls from the various lookouts.

montmorency falls zipline quebec

Zipline Montmorency Falls

If you are looking for a unique way to experience Montmorency Falls, try zip lining! From the top of the cliff, you will zipline 300 m, crossing in front of the falls. The Montmorency Falls zipline takes approximately 30-45 minutes from start to finish, including the time to sign-up.

Unfortunately, during my visit in October, the ziplining was not open, so I could not zipline the falls. I’ve been wanting to go again since my first zipline in Costa Rica , so I was sad it was closed during my visit.

How Long to Spend at Montmorency Falls?

How much time you need at Montmorency Falls will depend on what you want to see and do while in the park. If time is tight or if you only want to see the falls from either the bottom or the top and take pictures, 45 minutes can work.

To fully experience this incredible Quebec waterfall and take your time, you should allow at least 1.5 – 2 hours to see both the top suspension bridge area and the bottom of the falls where the stairs and viewing platform is.

If you plan to zipline, add even more time. I took my time and spent 3 hours at Montmorency Falls Park.

Tips for Visiting Montmorency Falls

  • Make sure you see the falls from both the top and the bottom. They both provide very different views of the waterfall, and your visit is not complete if you don’t see both angles.
  • Visit the bottom of Montmorency Falls first. It is exciting to see the falls from afar first and slowly get closer and closer until you reach the top; I found it added to the experience.
  • If you plan to zipline, wear loose-fitting clothing and closed-toe shoes. They will provide you with the best ziplining experience.
  • Weekdays are less crowded , so visit the falls on a weekday if possible.
  • If you don’t want to take the stairs or cable car to get to the falls, drive your car up/down. The ticket you get by parking at Montmorency Falls allows you to enter from either parking lot. It will save you time and effort if you are short on time.
  • You do not need a full day at Montmorency Falls. Visit as a day trip or even a half-day. During my visit, I stayed 3 hours at the park.
  • Bring your camera and have fun , as there are plenty of fun photo opportunities within the park.

Sitting about 9 miles northeast of Old Québec along the St. Lawrence River, Montmorency Falls Park attracts nature lovers and sightseers alike with its 272-foot waterfall. In case you can't imagine that, Montmorency Falls is one-and-a-half times taller than Niagara Falls. Although warmer summertime temperatures make a Montmorency visit much more comfortable, some travelers recommend stopping by in the winter to take in the natural beauty without the crowds.

There are a variety of activities at the park, including hiking trails, playgrounds, bike paths and a double zip line. From the top of the cliff, the zip line allows two people to simultaneously cross the cove of the falls (nearly 1,000 feet) to the La Baronne viewpoint. In the winter, snowshoeing and ice climbing are popular activities here.

You can visit the falls year-round free of charge by climbing the staircase from the visitor center.

But many travelers warn that the stairs can be tough to navigate during the winter and that sometimes the stairs are closed due to ice. A cable car can take you to the top, but you'll have to pay roughly CA$14.95 (about $11) for an adult round-trip ticket and CA$7.48 (around $5.50) for a round-trip ticket for a child ages 6 to 17. Zip line rides cost CA$30 for adults (around $22) and CA$22.50 (about $16.50) for children ages 17 and younger. To avoid the thickest crowds, plan your visit before lunchtime – the park is quieter in the morning, according to recent visitors.

You can access the park by bus from the old city (route No. 800), or you can drive, but be prepared for parking fees. It costs about CA$4 (around $3) per vehicle.

The park itself is open 24/7 year-round, but the attractions and activities found within the park operate their own hours. If you’d like to walk around the park, you'll have to pay approximately CA$7.50 (around $5.50) per adult ages 18 and older; children can enter for free. For more information, including seasonal hours, visit the Montmorency Falls Park page on the Sépaq  website  (the government agency that manages parks and wildlife reserves).

#1 Old Québec (Vieux-Québec)

Clustered around the city's port on the banks of the St. Lawrence River are the quaint stone buildings and narrow, winding streets of Old Québec. This historic neighborhood (and UNESCO World Heritage Site) houses some of the city's most notable attractions, including the  Citadel , Quartier Petit-Champlain  and  Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral . Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time here: You'll find it difficult to resist popping into one of Old Québec's artisan shops or stopping to warm up with an aromatic cup of coffee at one of the many charming cafes.

Many Québec City visitors cite the neighborhood's atmosphere as the primary draw, with many saying it feels just like being in Europe thanks to its cobblestone streets, stunning architecture and friendly locals.
