Review: MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

What is the line?  MSC

Name of ship?  MSC World Europa

Passenger occupancy?  6,762

Itinerary?  Doha, Qatar

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

European cruise line MSC might not yet have the brand recognition of some of its U.S.-based competitors—at least to the North American audience—but its large ships bring all the at-sea fun you’d come to expect from the big names. Where MSC stands apart is its international following. Onboard, it’s not uncommon to hear passengers speaking numerous languages, as they hail from all over the world.

Tell us about the ship in general

MSC World Europa, which launched in December 2022, is the cruise line’s largest ship to date, carrying nearly 7,000 passengers at maximum capacity. And it has plenty of amenities for all, from 33 bars and restaurants to a Formula 1 simulator to the world’s tallest dry slide at sea. So, yes, this ship very much feels like a floating city—but it marks a new era in MSC’s quest to achieve zero emissions.  MSC World Europa is the first ship in the fleet to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), an alternative fuel that has fewer carbon emissions than other fossil fuels. (It does, however, have high methane emissions.) But what’s more,  MSC World Europa is a testing ground for a new type of electrochemical fuel cell that’s 25 to 30 percent more efficient than combustion engines. If the trial succeeds, this low-emission cell could be used to power the ship’s electrical and heating systems. The ship is also notable for its futuristic design inside and out, from the LED “sky screens” on the ceiling of the main indoor promenade to a Y-shaped stern that creates an open-air promenade and more space for exterior cabins.

Who is onboard?

MSC is a family-friendly cruise line that caters to international guests—Europeans, primarily, but there’s a growing North American clientele, too. You might find couples and groups of friends onboard, too, as there are plenty of adult activities, like an onboard brewery.

Describe the cabins

There are 19 cabin types on  MSC World Europa . I stayed in a Deluxe Balcony Aurea cabin, a mid-tier room type that was on the smaller side, with a bed, sofa, and a balcony. The decor was minimal and a bit bland compared to the high-design public areas, with upholstery in shades of brown. I did, however, find the shower in the bathroom to be rather spacious. If I were to travel on the ship again, I’d book a cabin in the Yacht Club, MSC’s upscale ship-within-a-ship concept. Yacht Club guests reside in an exclusive area on the ship that includes a private pool deck, a restaurant, and a bar.

Tell us about the crew

There are more than 1,400 crew members onboard  MSC World Europa,  and while it's impossible to meet them all, I found service to be stellar across the board. Because the ship is so large, don’t expect extremely personalized service (except in the yacht club). But do expect friendly and knowledgeable staff all throughout the ship.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Dining is a highlight onboard MSC World Europa, which has a varied array of venues to cater to all palates. There are several buffets, including a 24-hour American-style fast-food spot for night owls, as well as three main dining rooms. But it’s the six specialty dining venues that deserve the accolades: a steakhouse, a cantina, a seafood grill, a teppanyaki grill, a sushi bar, and a farm-to-table eatery. As I was on a preview “sailing” for the ship’s naming ceremony—we remained docked in Doha, Qatar, for the duration of the trip—we didn’t have time to experience each restaurant in its entirety, but we did do an around-the-world tasting of bites, and I was impressed by each venue. I did have a full dinner at Chef’s Garden Kitchen, where onboard hydroponic gardens provide the microgreens for the Nordic-inspired menu, which was devised by chef Niklas Ekstedt, whose restaurant in Stockholm earned a Michelin star. My favorite dish here was dessert: a flavorful almond cake dusted with dehydrated mint sorbet.

I also found  MSC World Europa’s beverage scene to be rather impressive, catering to all palates just like the restaurants. Brewmaster Teo Musso uses seawater in the beers brewed onboard the ship and served in the British pub; the mixology bar has a remarkable resort-like outdoor seating area; and the gourmet coffee bar and South Asian–style tea house caters to those seeking an elegant caffeine fix. And that’s not to mention the other offerings like the gin bar, the Champagne bar, and the juice bar.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

Yes, and it’s a must-visit. The thermal circuit onboard  MSC World Europa might just be the finest at sea, between its plunge pools, salt room, and snow room, among many other amenities. I also enjoyed my Balinese massage, and you can also book standard salon treatments, too.

Activities and entertainment

You won’t be bored on this ship. With standard amenities like pools, hot tubs (14 of them!), a casino, and an arcade, as well as more unique ones, like the aforementioned world’s tallest dry slide at sea and Formula 1 simulator, a water park, bumper cars, and a roller rink, there’s plenty to do onboard. There are also numerous shows in the various performance venues, including the  Luna Park Arena, the World Theatre, and the Panorama Lounge—in the latter, I watched a sultry Latin dance show.

How was the experience for families?

The Family Zone takes up a significant portion of deck 18, and it comprises sections for different age groups, ranging from babies to teens. This is also where you’ll find the Formula 1 simulator, as well as an entire room dedicated to LEGO.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Though my experience on  MSC World Europa was limited to one port—Doha, Qatar—for a preview “sailing,” the ship is currently sailing itineraries in the Middle East, calling at ports like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Dammam, Saudi Arabia. I did take one excursion: a short half-day tour of Doha. It was a pretty typical cruise excursion that combined a bus ride with brief walking tours of tourist highlights.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

MSC Cruises’ Newest Ship Is the Brand’s Largest and Most Sustainable Ship to Date

The “ msc world europa ” runs on greener, alternative fuel. the mega-ship also features a hydroponic garden restaurant and a brewery where beers are made with desalinated water. here’s a first look..

Don’t judge a ship by its size. That’s the message from MSC Cruises’ newest cruise ship, the 6,774-passenger MSC World Europa , which at nearly 1,100 feet long, 21 decks high, and 205,7000 gross tons, is currently the sixth-largest cruise ship in the world.

It’s also a significant part of the cruise line’s plan to reach net zero emissions across the brand by 2050.

Historically, cruise ships haven’t been model citizens for sustainable travel, so it’s fair for people to raise an eyebrow when they hear a mega ship is striving to be more sustainable. MSC World Europa , however, is the first of four ships in MSC’s newest generation of vessels, which will run on greener, alternative forms of fuel.

The MSC World Europa’ s inaugural voyage kicked off in Doha in December 2022, shortly after the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (the ship served as a floating hotel for fans during the games). By April 2023, it will be circling the Mediterranean, where it will remain for the rest of the year. AFAR was able to get a first look at the ship in November—and these were our main takeaways.

Where to find the best cuisine, cocktails, and brews on board

The MSC World Europa has a whopping 13 restaurants and buffets, so it’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed by choice. The most memorable meal our group had during the inaugural celebration was at the Chef’s Garden Kitchen, where many of the herbs and vegetables used in the dishes are grown in a hydroponic garden in the middle of the dining room. It’s helmed by Niklas Ekstedt, a Swedish chef (whose restaurant Ekstedt garnered a Michelin star), TV personality, and author. He told us that the menu is meant to bridge traditional Nordic cuisine and modern techniques. If you go, do yourself a favor and get the scallop ceviche and the almond cake (the latter of which, Ekstedt said, is his mother’s recipe).

Another concept new to MSC is the seafood restaurant La Pescaderia, which evokes a Mediterranean fish market. Whole fish are on display, and guests can choose which they’d like to have prepared for them.

There are also 20 bars and lounges on the ship, including the Coffee Emporium, which offers cups of java made with different brewing styles (like Italian, Turkish, or Moroccan—I went with Turkish, because the barista said it would be the strongest). The Rajo Polo Tea House offers high tea (a great way to relax and unwind in the afternoon), while the Fizz-Champagne Bar has an extensive bottle selection. The Gin Project boasts more than 70 craft gins from around the world (served straight, with one of its myriad craft tonic waters, or as inventive cocktails such as tropical take on a Gin Fizz); and at the Elixir-Mixology Bar, you can order off the menu or give the bartender some flavor components (like “floral” or “fruity”) and they’ll craft something unique for you.

MSC World Europa is also home to the first brewery at sea where the beers are made with desalinated water. Brewmaster Teo Musso (who opened Baladin Farm Brewery in Italy in 1996) created three signature craft beers, which will be exclusively sold on the ship. They include a pilsner, a bitter, and a wheat beer. As a certified beer judge, I personally thought the pilsner was crisp, with delicate herbal notes and that it excelled above the others.

A mix of fun and relaxation

When planning the vessel, it was important to have a healthy balance of entertainment options as well amenities to help people relax, MSC CEO Gianni Onorato told AFAR during the maiden sailing.

With that in mind, MSC World Europa features different neighborhoods where similar amenities are grouped.

Most of the specialty restaurants, bars, and boutiques are found in an interior promenade called the World Galleria on decks six through eight. The ceiling is covered with a LED “sky screen,” which changes throughout the day—some displays show humpback whales swimming or the stars above. The aft of deck eight is home to an open-air quarter centered around the longest dry slide at sea—a corkscrewing, enclosed descent that travels down eleven decks—called Venom Drop @ The Spiral. (I didn’t have the chance to try it, as there was always a line, but my travel companions did and said it was surprisingly fun.)

There’s the Family Zone, which houses all kids facilities (with special areas for each age group), as well as bumper cars, a roller skating rink, an arcade, a Formula 1 simulator (a racecar game with hardware that mimics the movements of an F1 car with impressive realism), and a Lego Room (literally filled with million of Legos and sets).

On the top decks are six pools (including two that are adults only), 14 hot tubs (yes, 14—highly recommended are those by the Zen Pool with swapping views off the aft), and the kid-focused Aurora Borealis Aquapark, which includes a dedicated pool for toddlers.

For those looking for a bit of quiet, the ship’s 10,000-square-foot Balinese-style Aurea Spa is a zen-inducing retreat. Its treatment list includes all the essentials, like massages and facials. It also boasts a thermal area with a hydrotherapy circuit that includes saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, hot tubs, and even a room where guests can sit in snow (which feels like being inside an igloo).

A wide range of staterooms and suites

MSC World Europa has 17 classes of staterooms and suites. The most basic is an interior stateroom, which measures 160 square feet, contains a wardrobe and bathroom with shower, a double bed that can be converted into two singles, and a mini bar. The most opulent is the MSC Yacht Club Owner’s Suite, which is just over 1,076 square feet, has a balcony with a seating area and a private hot tub, dining and living room areas, a walk-in closet, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, a bar, and an espresso maker.

How “MSC World Europa” practices sustainability

When experiencing a ship of this size and scope, one has to wonder—how is this a greener vessel than its predecessors? First off, MSC World Europa is MSC’s first vessel powered by liquified natural gas (LNG).

Using LNG instead of diesel will help to reduce the ship’s total emissions by 25 percent, according to Linden Coppell, MSC’s vice president of sustainability and environmental social governance.

“LNG is a step forward; it is not the ultimate goal,” MSC CEO Onorato told AFAR. “It allows us to greatly reduce the consumption of fossil fuels and consequently the emissions.”

As a whole, the cruise industry is pushing for net zero emissions by 2050, though it’ll take significant advancements in technology and supply to meet that goal. MSC considers LNG a transitional fuel, Coppell said in a press briefing. It’s not going to get them to net zero alone. But it will “future-proof” MSC World Europa and her sister ships by enabling them to start using new fuels, like biofuel or synthetic fuel, as soon as they become readily available. Because MSC World Europa is already equipped with the appropriate infrastructure for alternative fuels, it will be able to switch more seamlessly—whereas ships that run on diesel would need to be retrofitted to accommodate greener fuels.

Another element on MSC’s road to emissions neutrality is the use of solid oxide fuel cells. It’s a technology that creates electricity to power and heat the ship not by combustion (how energy is typically created on cruise vessels) but by an electrochemical reaction, which Coppell said is somewhere between 25 and 30 percent more efficient.

Together, these and other sustainable technologies, like using shore power where possible (meaning the ship is able to plug into the local power grid at ports, allowing the vessel to turn off its engines), advanced wastewater treatment protocols, and an underwater radiated noise management system to minimize the sound impact on marine life, make World Europa MSC’s greenest ship.

Coppell said her team believes World Europa has the “lowest emissions per passenger of any ship currently sailing.”

Sailing the Middle East and the Mediterranean

From January through late March, World Europa is sailing around the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. At the end of March, it will start its repositioning sailing to the Mediterranean, making stops in Doha in Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai in the UAE, Muscat in Oman, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, before sailing through the Suez Canal and later arriving in Naples, Italy, on April 10. (Guests can get on the ship at any point in the itinerary.) For the rest of the year, it will run constant loops between ports in Malta (Valletta), Spain (Barcelona), France (Provence), and Italy (Genoa, Naples, and Taormina). Itineraries for 2024 and beyond haven’t been finalized. Pricing starts at $179 per person for a two-night cruise.

Our Surprising Experience Aboard the MSC World Europa | Cruise Review

We just got off a Mediterranean cruise on the MSC World Europa, and I’m excited to share our thoughts about our trip. This was our first experience with the MSC cruise line and, spoiler alert: We absolutely loved it.

Keep reading for more details about the MSC World Europa itinerary we went on, what we did at each port stop, and even some of the nitty-gritty things that we didn’t like (there weren’t that many).

msc world europa cruise review

This cruise was not sponsored in any way. We paid out of our own pocket, and everything mentioned below is our own opinion.

msc world europa cruise review

Our Overall Thoughts About the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

Overall, we genuinely enjoyed this cruise, which honestly surprised us. I’ve always assumed (and heard) that MSC was a few tiers down on the hierarchy of cruise ships, especially after cruising with Disney and Royal Caribbean , but everything we experienced proved that theory was incorrect.

The staff went out of their way to accommodate us, and speaking of accommodation, we loved our room. When we booked, the only room available for the five of us was an “Aurea” Premium Suite, and it was PERFECT. I’ll share more about it below, but if you have the opportunity to book an Aurea Experience room , DO IT.

It comes with extra benefits like free spa access (with reservation; we always got in when we wanted to go), a free bottle of prosecco, a smaller exclusive dining room, discounts on things on board, and more.

I didn’t have to cook for a week and they had pizza, hot dogs, and burgers any time you wanted it!; the kids loved the kid’s club and they even stayed on during a couple of port days (yes, it was open !!); the entertainment did its job and wowed us, the Mediterranean port stops were phenomenal, the spa onboard was top-notch, and the ship was fun for everyone!

The ship, y’all, was HUGE. It was built in 2022 and reminded us of pictures we’ve seen of the new Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas (but at more than half the price!). Apparently, it was at capacity (6,500+ passengers), but I promise it didn’t feel that way. There were a few times we’d have to wait a little while for an elevator, but that was to be expected. In most parts of the ship, it felt like everything was spread out. We found a place to sit almost every place we went.

We will 100% consider sailing with MSC again.

When We Sailed on the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

The five of us (kids ages 10, 9, and 6) sailed during Germany’s Carnivale break in the middle of February. We desperately needed some sunshine after a long wet and windy winter, and the itinerary looked too fantastic to pass up.

We booked this slightly last minute (in January) on a whim one night. The price was unbelievable (under $5,000 for five of us on a 7-night Mediterranean cruise), and the port stops checked off several places we wanted to visit.

I was slightly nervous about the weather in February and even leading up to our cruise it was looking like we might have wet weather, but things changed and we had great weather.

I’d imagine it would be very hot in the summer, though.

There were multiple (heated) pools, including a great indoor pool area with massive hot tubs. There’s also a splash pad for little kids and slides on the top deck for older kids. Even though two of them couldn’t ride the water slides, they still had fun at the pools.

The Not-So Fantastic Things

msc world europa cruise review

If we had to be nit-picky there were a few things we didn’t like. And seriously, this is us just being extra picky.

The dining room food was just okay.

There were more paid-for, specialty options on this ship than we realized, and MSC seems to cater to them. (Again, we booked this last minute so we didn’t have much time to research that part.) The dining room food just tasted like they were preparing it for thousands of people…so kind of bland and lukewarm, and it took a little while for dishes to come out.

We ate at the buffet most often because the turnaround for food was faster and we could all get a variety of whatever we wanted. It was the same food on the dining room menus (plus more!) at the buffets.

There Are a Lot of Specialty Places on Board .

I think if we planned for this it wouldn’t be in the negative column, but since we didn’t know/realize, we didn’t prepare for it. The specialty restaurants looked fantastic and at around 30 euros a meal (for adults), they weren’t that expensive. You had to pay extra for the fun, retro ice cream place and the coffee shop on board, too. If/when we sail with MSC again we’ll probably ask grandparents for on-board credit for the kids/us for a meal out or some fun treats.

*For what it’s worth we did treat ourselves to a couple of “fancy” meals and some ice cream. All I’m saying is that we just weren’t prepared for how many extra-paid options there were.

msc world europa cruise review

The height/age requirements for the slides.

There are several water slides on this ship, but you have to be at least 130 cm (my 9-year-old daughter was, like, 125cm and they wouldn’t let her slide – pun intended). For the “Venom,” the indoor dry slide you had to be 120 cm AND 8 or 9 years old. (Sorry, I don’t remember the specifics; my son (127cm is 6 and he was not allowed to ride it).

The Kid’s Club Entry/Exit Took FOREVER.

I’ll talk about the kid’s club more below because we loved it. But getting the kids in there and out of there TOOK FOREVER. Plain and simple: they need a better system set up, so plan extra time to drop off and pick up your kids.

There was also a cultural difference that we noticed. We’re used to standing and queuing in lines, but a lot of Europeans don’t stand in lines; they’ll just walk up to the front and “cut” in line. It’s a hard concept to get past for us, so it was frustrating when it happened (and it happened often until we finally just sucked it up and made sure we stayed in the very front when it was our turn.)

You can’t bring alcohol on board.

Some (most?) cruise liners will let you bring at least one bottle of wine with you, but—at the time we boarded—you couldn’t bring any on. We had a drink package (included in the price when we booked), so it was fine, but I did find that interesting.

I think that’s about it, and those things aren’t in any way a dealbreaker. When I say we liked sailing on the MSC World Europa, I mean it!

Our Port Stops on the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

The Mediterranean itinerary for the MSC World Europa is what sold us on this cruise. And here’s the cool thing about MSC: You can embark (begin your cruise) at any of the ports.

This ship basically does a loop on repeat (I think the itinerary changes a little bit in April). So if beginning/ending in one port is better than another, check into those dates.

For us, we wanted to start and end in Rome because we wanted a little more time in the city. Our cruise departed on a Monday evening (we had to be there by 2 pm), and we arrived in Rome the Saturday before, giving us all day Sunday and Monday morning to explore.

Except for a few places, we didn’t book things ahead of time. We also almost always opted to not do excursions with the cruise. They’re often way more expensive and we don’t like to just sit on a bus the whole time. However, MSC had a bike tour in almost every port city, and those looked great.

Here’s a very quick look at what we did in each Mediterranean MSC World Europa port:

Rome, Italy

msc world europa cruise review

On Sunday (the day before we embarked) we went on a Golf Car Tour of Rome . I highly recommend this tour, especially if you are short on time. It took us all over the city.

After the city tour, we just walked around and went back to the Forum and Colosseum area . It was a very low-key and enjoyable day.

On Monday we went to Vatican City. I bought entry tickets for the museum and Sistine Chapel the day we booked our cruise (absolutely do this because it will sell out!!). We chose not to do a guided tour so we could go at our own pace, but we did get the kid audio guides once we got inside.

After checking out the Vatican we walked over to see St. Paul’s Cathedral, but the line snaked around so much we just called it a day and decided to have lunch at the most delicious spot near where we stored our luggage.

We stored our luggage at a place right around the corner from the entrance to the museum before our tour, and then we took a taxi from there to the cruise port in Civitavecchia.

Palermo, Sicily

msc world europa cruise review

Our two younger kids stayed on the ship that day and our oldest went out with us. We’ve been to Sicily before , but on the other side of the island, so we were excited to see Palermo. I booked a Street Food Tour , so we ate our way around the city.

I highly recommend it if you like getting a literal taste of a place combined with some great historical info.

Valletta, Malta

msc world europa cruise review

This port stop on the MSC World Europe was a new country for all of us, so all the kids got off the ship and explored with us. We planned to just walk around, but then I found this scavenger hunt that was inexpensive, fun, and would take us all around Valletta.

If you want an easy day and want to see the city, I highly recommend it.

Barcelona, Spain

msc world europa cruise review

We LOVE Spain so we were thrilled to be back in the country.

Along with booking Vatican tickets, I also booked these tickets as soon as we booked the cruise because I heard they sell out fast. We took a taxi from the port to Park Güell and walked around for about an hour. (I’m going to write a longer post on this place; it was fun to see, but we didn’t enjoy it very much for various reasons. I think if we booked this ticket that included a guide we would have liked it more.)

We took another cab to Sagrada Familia — if you go to Barcelona you have to go inside the church. It’s magnificent. We did not do a guided tour but did use the audio guide on the Sagrada app.

My husband and girls went up the Nativity tower (but he said he might not recommend it. “Usually you get the high-altitude, vista panorama. But this one was just like you’re on a scaffolding in between the towers, so the view is limited. You can see the church a little more up close, but that’s the only benefit.”)

Marseille, France

msc world europa cruise review

All three kids stayed on the MSC World Europa this time, and my husband and I went off to explore Marseille.

We didn’t plan any excursions here; we just walked around and enjoyed the city. While we wish we took a taxi into Marseille, there is a free city bus that will take you into town. (We just had to wait a while for it; get off the ship and follow the green line on the ground until you get to the bus stop.) We took a taxi back when our day was over.

Genoa, Italy

msc world europa cruise review

The kids stayed in the kid’s club again for this port stop, so we had another day date! It was another port stop that we planned on just walking around and seeing the sights, but then we found a Rickshaw Tour .

As you walk out and go down the escalators there’s a little booth with someone selling tours and that’s where we bought it. (You can also book ahead of time; recommended if you’re going during peak travel time.)

There was a 1 or 2 hour option; we picked the one-hour tour and I’m so happy we did it! The guide was great and gave us insight into the city from a local’s perspective, plus it went to places without tourists. The Rickshaw tour will bring you back to the ship, but we asked him to drop us off at the cathedral. The walk back was easy.

Our Room on the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

We stayed in an Aurea Premium Suite, room number 12166, which fit all five of us with room to spare. We never felt cramped; in fact, it always felt like there was a decent amount of space if you’ve ever cruised before then you know that cruise rooms can feel like a shoebox! Not so with this room.

Here’s a walk-through video of our MSC World Europa Aurea room

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jess | family travel in europe + military wife (@jesstagirl)

There were bunk beds for the kids right when you walked in, and a pull-out double bed from the couch. We asked our steward not to turn it back into a couch every day (no need for all that extra work), and there was still enough room.

Let’s be honest, you’re not hanging out in your room that much, so you just need enough space to get ready in the morning and throw all your stuff when you get back.

There was plenty of room to store all of our things, and of course, I brought extra helpers like heavy-duty magnet hooks and our other favorite cruise essentials.

Having a balcony was a must for us, and this one was pretty large. It was great to see each city as we rolled into town every morning. I would’ve liked to have a table outside, but a place to prop my feet up was nice, too.

The Kid’s Club on the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

Truth be told…we (the parents) didn’t go into the kid’s club to see the space. We could have (they have open house times), but we always just let them go in on their own.

They were all in the Junior Club. (Logan was supposed to be in the “Mini Club,” but they graciously let him be in the one that his sisters were in.)

Here’s what my kids said about the kid’s club when I just asked them for their thoughts on it.

It was extremely fun. there’s a lego room and in the lego room there buckets of legos to play. You can just build anything you want, but then you need to destroy it before you leave. -Logan (6 years old)
There’s a lego room, a movie room where you play games and watch movies, and a home room where we wait until there’s an activity. They take you to lunch and dinner at the buffet. I liked it because there were games and drawing and anyone could play anything. Every night was also a different theme (we didn’t know about this), but you could bring costumes and dress up. If you didn’t have costume they could paint your face! Julia (10 years old)
I liked the kid’s club because every night after dinner there was a dance party with Do-Re-Me (the MSC mascot), and it was just awesome. I liked all the different people and I met four new friends. Going to dinner and lunch with them was fun and yummy. I liked watching movies in the movie room even if they were sometimes in another language. There was also a Master Chef at Sea competition and I won! You get to also go to the sportsplex every day to play inside a gym. And the leaders were really nice. There were lots of activities and I liked getting my face painted every night! There’s also a craft every day and the leaders would dress up, too! Madilyn (9 years old; she turned 9 on the ship!)

The Shows on the MSC World Europa

msc world europa cruise review

If you go into this not expecting a Broadway or West End performance , you’ll have a great time. There are multiple shows every evening and they have that “wow” factor. Everything we saw was entertaining with talented artists doing everything from aerobatics and fun dancing and singing to illusionists and themed nights. Sometimes the kids went with us and other times we enjoyed the shows alone.

You do have to reserve your spot ahead of time with their app, but it was pretty easy and we were able to get into almost every show we wanted to see. Our favorite lounge was the Panorama Lounge since you have a table to set your drink down.

Book Your MSC Cruise

I’m totally ready to book another MSC cruise, although I’ve gotta admit that it will have to be on one of their newer ships. This one impressed us so much that I’d be worried about how much we’d like one of their older ships. But the itineraries up to Northern Europe look so great.

If you’re interested in booking a cruise, I highly encourage you to get in touch with my travel advisor, Jennifer, at Endless Routes Travel ; she can help you every step of the way.

MSC World Europa Cruise Ship Review

Let's explore world europa.

MSC World Europa launched in 2022 and has a capacity of 6,000 guests. The ship offers state-of-the-art features, including an indoor promenade, an aquatic park, and the latest environmental technologies. The ship is known for her luxurious amenities, diverse dining options, and entertainment offerings. MSC World Europa is the first ship in the fleet to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG), an alternative fuel that has fewer carbon emissions than other fossil fuels.

MSC World Europa  offers an extensive range of accommodation options to satisfy every taste, from luxurious suites with stylish private facilities in the MSC Yacht Club to traditional, comfortable staterooms. What’s more?  MSC World Europa  brings brand new stateroom designs overlooking the outdoor promenade, where guests can soak up the vibrant atmosphere for a truly unique experience.

There are six main categories for cabins on  MSC World Europa: Interior , Oceanview, Balcony, Aurea Balcony, Suite, and MSC Yacht Club.

All cabins onboard  MSC World Europa  exhibit striking hues and richly textured wood finishes. The beds are sufficiently comfy with a slightly firm feel, and we particularly adore the exquisite toiletries bearing MSC’s branding, imbued with a captivating fragrance.

Each cabin on  MSC World Europa  is equipped with a private bathroom featuring a shower, toilet, and sink/vanity, as well as interactive on-demand television sets, mini-fridges, and in-room safes, along with ample storage space that increases in proportion to the size of the selected cabin. Several cabins across all categories are eligible for interconnection, while a few cabins of various grades are designated as Accessible. Premium bath products are standard in every room, along with 24-hour room service, hair dryers, mini-fridges, bathrobes, and more.

MSC World Europa’s Yacht Club staterooms and suites offer exceptional value on board. This exclusive enclave, which feels like a ship within a ship, boasts abundant additional amenities such as a private dining room, a lounge with free-flowing drinks, and expansive sun decks. The icing on the cake is access to butler service, inclusive mini-bars, and priority embarkation and disembarkation. Interestingly, one need not shell out for a suite to enjoy the benefits of MSC Yacht Club. Though there are multiple suite options- some extending over multiple decks with private balconies and whirlpool tubs, there are also more modest balcony suites. Upgrading to The Yacht Club Level unlocks additional perks such as a private balcony, a concierge, and butler service. Furthermore, suites offer an extensively luxurious experience with a personal butler, access to a private restaurant, and indoor/outdoor lounges complemented by breathtaking ocean views.

No matter which type of cabin you select, whether it’s a deluxe or cost-effective option, your journey on MSC World Europa will undoubtedly be an unforgettable one.

Anyone who has sailed aboard  MSC World Europa  would affirm that going hungry is next to impossible. Indulge in a world of culinary delights aboard  MSC World Europa  and explore brand new specialty dining concepts like the hydroponic garden at Chef’s Garden Kitchen, La Pescaderia for Mediterranean fish dishes, an on-board microbrewery, and a Gin bar that offers mixology classes. With 13 dining venues on board, including six specialty restaurants, guests can savor the farm-to-ocean ethos of Michelin-starred chef Niklas Ekstedt’s Chef’s Garden Kitchen. The ship also offers three distinct restaurant buffets, each with a unique ambiance, and a new location that remains open 24/7. MSC World Europa also boasts Butcher’s Cut for an American-style steakhouse, Hola! Tacos & Cantina for Latin American street food, Kaito Teppanyaki & Sushi bar, and renowned buffets that are among guests’ favorites.

Guests can enjoy their main dining experience aboard  MSC World Europa  in various restaurants like Bubbles, La Foglia, Esagono, and Hexagon. There are also Il Mercato Buffet and La Brasserie Buffet for buffet-style dining. Aurea guests can savor their meals exclusively at Les Dunes Restaurant.

Whether you are looking for a fresh juice bar, a quiet spot for tea, or a lively cocktail lounge,  MSC World Europa  has a variety of bars and cafes to suit any mood. With a focus on craft and artisanal products, guests will be pleasantly surprised. The ship is home to several bars and lounges, including the Champagne Bar, Dolce Vita, Coffee Emporium, Elixir Mixology Bar, Gin Bar, Juice Bar, Master of the Sea Pub, MSC Yacht Club Sundeck Bar, Raj Polo Tea House, Top Sail Lounge, and Zen Pool Bar.

Guests are spoiled for choices with thrilling entertainment possibilities such as innovative performances, immersive encounters, and unexpected experiences. Indulge in five captivating themed parties, two interactive big-screen game shows, cutting-edge attractions, and other advanced features in the ship’s high-tech venues.

From sunrise to sunset, an all-encompassing entertainment experience awaits guests of every age. Revel in three new concert-style performances at the versatile Luna Park Arena, five majestic theatrical productions at the World Theater, four immersive themed experiences at the Panorama Lounge, and unpredicted pop-up entertainment across the vessel.

Daytime will sparkle with exclusive features like the new VR Drone Academy, two interactive gameshows, and the Digital Dance Academy presenting three Dance with Flavia classes led by the Strictly Come Dancing champion Flavia Cacace-Mistry. Doremi’s Wake Up Rave will also provide the ship’s youngest visitors with an entertaining morning. Record-breaking challenges will be available during daytime events and a grand evening performance.

After hours, the Luna Park Arena will be illuminated with three interactive concerts with mind-blowing visual effects: Symphonic Ibiza, Supershow, and Crimson Club.

PANORAMA LOUNGE

The aft of the ship features the stunning Panorama Lounge. There are four immersive 90-minute music experiences showcasing dance styles, including samba, tango, waltz, disco, hip hop, and many more. Live bands, dancers, singers, aerialists, and acrobats will participate in: Let’s Get Loud, Ultimate Disco, Bandstand Boogie, and Rock Evolution.

MSC World Europa offers an extensive range of entertainment options that cater to every preference and taste. No matter what you choose, you can be assured of having an unforgettable entertainment experience that will make your voyage memorable.

MSC World Europa preview: This giant new cruise ship will have 22 decks, 6 pools and a record-breaking slide

Gene Sloan

Have you heard the buzz about the giant new cruise ship under construction for MSC Cruises ? If not, you will soon.

Scheduled to debut in December, this massive new vessel named MSC World Europa is an astounding 22 decks high — four decks higher than Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas , the current size leader in the cruise world.

It's also 1,093 feet long, which is longer than any other MSC Cruises ship ever built.

Still, despite its great height and length, MSC World Europa won't quite top Wonder of the Seas as the world's biggest cruise ship. Wonder of the Seas and its four sister vessels — Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas — will remain the queens of the megaship world when measured by total interior space.

After its debut, MSC World Europa will fall just behind them in the rankings of the world's largest cruise ships, at No. 6.

In all, MSC World Europa will measure about 205,000 tons — about 10% less than the five Royal Caribbean ships, known as the Oasis class . However, smaller is relative. At 205,000 tons, MSC World Europa still will be significantly bigger than any vessel currently operated by any line other than Royal Caribbean; this includes such cruising rivals as Carnival Cruise Line , Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises .

Like the Oasis-class ships, MSC World Europa will be able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762 to be exact.

In other words, this is going to be one serious megaship.

Here's a preview of what to expect from MSC World Europa when it begins sailing later this year.

What's the layout of MSC World Europa?

msc world europa cruise review

MSC Cruises is taking a page from Royal Caribbean's playbook by breaking down the ship's public areas into distinct districts.

MSC World Europa will have an adults-only "Zen district" and a separate "family district" that will house 10 new kids facilities. There will also be a central interior promenade called World Galleria complete with entertainment, shops and bars.

The public areas of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class ships are famously broken down into seven or eight separate districts, which Royal Caribbean calls neighborhoods.

msc world europa cruise review

Notably, the 341-foot promenade on MSC World Europa will be half-open to the sky and half-covered by an LED "sky screen"; the screen will light up with different displays throughout the day.

One of the signature features of the promenade will be The Venom Drop @ The Spiral, a record-breaking dry slide that plunges 11 decks and ends near the promenade area.

How many pools are there on MSC World Europa?

MSC World Europa will have six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea.

The watery offerings will include an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that MSC Cruises says will integrate virtual reality technology. There also will be a family sun deck.

How many restaurants does MSC World Europa have?

msc world europa cruise review

MSC World Europa will have 13 dining venues, including six specialty restaurants.

Two new-for-the-line venues will be Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens), and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating.

Restaurants that already exist on other MSC Cruises ships will also be featured on MSC World Europa. These include the American-style steakhouse Butcher's Cut, the Asian-inspired Kaito Teppanyaki and Sushi Bar, and the Latin American street food-inspired Hola! Tacos and Cantina.

In a twist, the ship will have three separate buffet restaurants, each with its own ambiance.

MSC World Europa will also feature a craft beer bar serving brews made on board — a first for MSC Cruises. Dubbed the Masters of the Sea Pub, it'll span two decks.

Related: Don't miss perks through the MSC Voyagers Club loyalty program

Other drinking venues will include a cocktail bar called Elixir – Mixology Bar and a South Asian-style tea room filled with perfumes from the East. There will also be a widely stocked Gin Bar.

What are the entertainment options?

msc world europa cruise review

As one would expect from one of the world's largest ships, MSC World Europa will be chock-full of entertainment venues both big and small, including — get this — a venue that will host roller disco parties and serve as a bumper cars pavilion (the latter is something we've seen only on Royal Caribbean ships).

These entertainment venues will include:

  • A multistory venue called the Panorama Lounge at the back of the ship, which will be home to "immersive" entertainment.
  • A main, 1,153-seat theater, dubbed the World Theatre, that'll be the place for big production shows.
  • A family-friendly multifunctional entertainment venue called Luna Park Arena, which will host movies, game shows, kids activities and themed parties.

MSC Cruises in September announced the Luna Park Arena would host three concert-style shows — all new for the line. They'll include a "Symphonic Ibiza" show that combines a big-screen orchestra, modern Euro dance music, three specialty artists, dancers, a DJ, two vocalists and a club-style atmosphere. Also planned is a "K Pop party" where partygoers will learn dance routines and sing along with K-pop hits, accompanied by street dancers, acrobats and vocalists.

In addition, MSC Cruises announced the World Theatre would be home to five full-scale theater productions — all also new for the line. One of them, to be called "Yellow Submarine," will feature circus elements based on Beatles songs.

The line also said the Panorama Lounge would be home to four 90-minute music experiences that offer a mix of live bands, dancers, singers, aerialists and acrobats. The dancing on display during these performances will range from samba and tango to waltz, disco and lindy hop.

Does MSC World Europa have a kids area?

Developed in collaboration with Lego and Chicco (and featuring play areas that include lots of their products), the children's area on MSC World Europa will spread over seven rooms and 8,200 square feet. This is more space than the children's areas on any other MSC Cruises ship.

Each of the seven rooms will be dedicated to a distinct age group ranging from infants to 17 years old.

What kind of cabins can you book on MSC World Europa?

MSC World Europa will offer 19 different types of cabins, seven of which are new for the line.

Among them: cabins and suites with balconies that overlook the ship's interior promenade and giant duplex MSC Yacht Club suites with living and dining room areas.

In addition, the ship will have the line's first "infinite ocean view" cabins with walls of glass facing the sea that open from the top down to create a balcony-like effect. It's a concept that first debuted on an ocean ship in 2018, on Celebrity Cruises' 2,908-passenger Celebrity Edge .

Where will MSC World Europa cruise?

MSC World Europa will debut in December in the Persian Gulf with sailings that include a visit to Saudi Arabia — a destination rarely visited by cruise ships.

The vessel will initially sail a four-night Persian Gulf voyage from Doha, Qatar, to Dubai on Dec. 20. Then, it will begin a series of seven-night voyages from Dubai. The seven-night voyages will feature calls at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Dammam, Saudi Arabia; Doha; and Sir Bani Yas Island. The latter is a beach and wildlife-viewing destination in the UAE that will be exclusive to MSC World Europa passengers during their visit.

In late March 2023, MSC World Europa will reposition to the Mediterranean for a series of seven-night voyages to ports in Italy , France , Malta and Spain .

Eventually, MSC World Europa (or a yet-to-be-built sister ship) is likely to operate sailings in the Caribbean out of Florida . However, such itineraries have yet to be set.

MSC World Europa will be the first of four sister ships scheduled to debut between 2022 and 2027 that will make up a new class for MSC Cruises called the World class.

The future of cruising – we step onboard new ship MSC World Europa

MSC Cruises’ newest venture comes in the form of mega-ship MSC World Europa – the ship offers you the chance to sail sustainably, powered by LNG, and hits the waters in December 2022 with a four-night sailing from Doha to Dubai. Lucy Abbott steps onboard for a first look at the ship.

What’s eco-friendly, future-ready and fun for everyone? That’s right, MSC World Europa .

Built with the future in mind, the newest ship in MSC Cruises ’ fleet is not only the first of the World Class series, but she also features state-of-the-art technology onboard, purely for your cruising pleasure. From the impressive entertainment venue, Luna Park Area, to the Kinetic Dome – it certainly impresses.

Getting down to the statistics, MSC World Europa features a 104-metre-long promenade, 19 different cabin categories with seven new designs, 13 dining venues, seven swimming pools, and, last but certainly not least, a record-breaking 11-deck high stainless-steel slide named The Venom Drop.

The sheer scale and size of the ship is something that can only be admired when you step onboard for the first time, it truly is an impressive feat. Yet, with the line stating that this ship is ‘the future of cruising’, we wouldn’t expect anything less.

MSC World Europa doesn’t stop at simply using the more sustainable fuel option of LNG, there is an added focus on waste management with the addition of advanced wastewater treatment.

In fact, every aspect onboard has been made more environmentally friendly, even to the extent of making all lightbulbs possible LED as well as making the exterior paint of the ship anti fouling which prevents ships from barnacles and algae, speeding up the ship and therefore reducing fuel consumption.

Made up of 58 mega blocks, exploring the ship is certainly a mega-adventure with something new at every turn. You can choose from a wide variety of stateroom options from the classic interior room at 10-15 square metres to the exclusively luxurious MSC Yacht Club owner’s suite with a whirlpool bath.

All cabins include a wardrobe, bathroom with shower and hairdryer, interactive TV, Wi-Fi (for a fee), mini-bar, safe and air conditioning. In essence, everything that one would need for a comfortable cruising experience is provided.

If you’re looking for something more, the ocean view stateroom offers that all-important glimpse to the next destination awaiting exploration – and the balcony stateroom provides a three-square metre balcony for ultimate sea views.

Alternatively, if you want to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle and always be in the know of what’s happening onboard, then the deluxe suite aurea looking over the promenade is the most unique option and one of MSC’s newest cabin options.

For the best of the best, opt for an MSC Yacht Club suite, where you can enjoy large balconies, multiple living rooms, a vanity area, a bar set up and much, much more – what’s more, MSC World Europa actually features the lines biggest Yacht Club with the addition of a dual deck sundeck.

Activities for all ages.

Whether you’re travelling as a family, couple, friends or even solos – we can guarantee you that there is a form of entertainment to please everyone.

All ages can enjoy the venom drop at the spiral –the only requirement being a stomach of steel. As the longest dry slide at sea made of stainless steel, it is a must-do.

Another one for the whole family is the Luna Park Arena. Made up of 300 seats this venue hosts a range of things, from game shows to kids’ activities.

Kids (and kids at heart) can enjoy the aurora borealis aquapark, boosted with VR technology with four water slides and even a special pool for toddlers.

To expand the mind, the MSC foundation centre offers both an educational interactive game experience for children to learn about the importance of caring for the environment as well as adult education.

More activities include bumper cars, rollerblading arena, video arcades and more – boredom will be a distant memory the moment one steps onboard.

Entertainment comes in the form of three new concert-style shows and five new full-scale theatre productions in the likes of the Panorama Lounge to witness the best of MSC Cruises – not one to miss.

A foodies paradise

It’s time to get serious about food – MSC World Europa brings guests on an immersive food journey that will knock your bog-standard pie and chips out of the water.

13 dining venues and six speciality restaurants include a classic American-style steakhouse Butcher’s Cut, sushi bar and Latin American street food-inspired Hola! Tacos & Cantina. The only problem you may encounter is where to start.

One thing is clear, MSC Cruises pride itself on attention to detail, in fact, MSC World Europa will have its own micro-greens and vegetables which have been grown onboard.

Now for the most important thing onboard – bars and lounges. Where else would you find a bar to suit any mood?

For a casual pint opt for the Masters of the Sea Pub for a refreshing glass of craft beer (expect the best as the ship has its own microbrewery onboard), or, for a crafted experience visit Elixir – Mixology Bar and sip on an elaborate cocktail or opt for one (or two or three) of the 30 varieties of gin onboard.

Those who aren’t big drinkers need not panic, there is a juice bar which makes fresh juices, an authentic Emporium coffee bar with a wide variety of coffee beans as well as a South Asian-style tea room that boats 25 different loose teas.

It’s safe to say that this is a ship that defines the future of the cruise industry – the perfect fusion of technology, sustainability and revolutionary onboard experiences.

MSC World Europa Itineraries

Msc world europa review, review of msc world europa.

The 2022-built MSC World Europa cruise ship (initially announced as "MSC Europa") is the first in a 4-unit "MSC WORLD Class" series of passenger liners designed and built for MSC Cruises . The first vessel (World Europa) is to be followed by the sistership World America (2025). The two optional vessels ( ordered in 2022) will be launched in 2026 ( World Asia ) and 2027 (MSC World tbn).

The vessel (IMO number 9837420) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 256070000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

MSC Cruises (MSC Crociere) is a passenger shipping company headquartered in Genoa and Naples . It was established in 1960. Today, MSC Crociere is a subsidiary of MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) - the world's 2nd largest containership company . MSC Crociere is the world's largest privately-owned cruise company.

By annual passenger shipping volumes, MSC is ranked the world's 3rd largest cruise shipowner - following only Carnival Corporation and RCG-Royal Caribbean Group .

As of 2021, MSC is ranked Europe's largest passenger shipping company. By the year 2026, MSC could become the world's 3rd largest cruise company (eventually surpassing NCLH by combined berth capacity) with a 29-vessel fleet that includes 15 newbuilds (2017-2027) and the unprecedented USD 13 billion budget for new shipbuilding projects.

MSC Cruises World-Class liners

On April 6, 2017, during MSC Meraviglia 's delivery ceremony at STX France Shipyard (Saint-Nazaire) , MSC signed a new shipbuilding MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with STX France for a new series of 2 vessels (World Class) at a total cost ~EUR 4,5 billion (~USD 4,8B). The ceremony was attended by Emmanuel Macron (France's President), Bruno Le Maire (France's Minister of Economy), Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Chairman) and Laurent Castaing (STX France's CEO). The first World-Class ship order was officially signed on May 31, 2017.

MSC World Europa cruise ship (MSC World Class liner)

The order for the two optional ships was announced in January 2020, making MSC the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard's largest customer - with a total of 21 units constructed there.

World Class MSC ships are with max passenger capacity 6782 (5079 lower berths). Building cost per ship is EUR 1,125 billion (USD 1,255B). The shipbuilder is Chantiers de l'Atlantique (fka STX France). The shipbuilding order includes 2 initial units, plus 2 optional. Each vessel has Gross Tonnage/volume 215,863 (GT tons), LOA length 333 m (1093 ft), waterline beam/width 41 m/135 ft (max width 54 m/177 ft), height 75 m (245 ft), draft 9,2 m (31 ft).

When was first announced by MSC (in April 2016), this ship design was planned with GT 205,000 tons, 2760 passenger staterooms, max passenger capacity 6850 (world's biggest by capacity). By GT tonnage/volume, MSC's World Class represents one of the world's largest passenger ships .

Reviewing the boat's design concepts (renderings and videos) was suggested a similar to the Oasis-Class interior structure with a Promenade (ship-long wraparound complex) with numerous dining and drink venues (on the ground floor - Aurea Restaurant, Raj Polo Tea House, Gin Bar, Zest-Juice Bar, Elixir-Mixology Bar, Fizz-Champagne Bar, Malt Lounge & Smoker's Bar, Emporium Coffee House), Promenade Cabins (interior-facing balcony rooms) and aft-located swimming pool (family pool deck).

The Lido Deck is dome-covered (by a retractable glass roof with solar panels) and with a large resort-style swimming pool, 6x Jacuzzis (4 cantilevered whirlpool hot tubs / porside and starboard), kids' Aquapark with 1x swimming pool and 3x waterslides (aft-located outdoor playground adjacent to the funnels/smokestacks) and aft-located adults-only Sundeck (with 2x swimming pools). Forward is the MSC Yacht Club (exclusive Sundeck with its own swimming pool, Spa pool, bar lounge).

World Europa's MSC Yacht Club is enhanced, with key highlights being:

  • The 2-deck sundeck is redesigned and provides 270-degree front views. The Lower Sundeck is fitted with dining and beverage venues (bar and grill). The Upper Sundeck has a large Jacuzzi/whirlpool and a swimming pool surrounded by a sunbathing area with padded loungers and private cabanas.
  • Two new Owner Suites (cat YC4) feature a double bedroom (walk-in closet), bathroom (with a full-size bathtub), a separate living-dining area (with floor-ceiling windows), two spacious sundecks (terraces with alfresco dining areas and Jacuzzies).
  • The 2-deck Duplex Suites have a lower level dedicated to the sundeck, lounge and dining areas, half bath. On the upper level is the master bedroom (with its own bathroom with bathtub). Duplex Suites have 2 sundecks, with the lower housing a jacuzzi/whirlpool bath and a lounge area, while the upper deck is for sunbathing (fitted with padded loungers).
  • MSC Yacht Club's passengers can visit exclusive treatment rooms for massages (part of MSC Aurea Spa) and also enjoy unlimited use of the thermal area.

MSC Yacht Club complex houses a total of 152 suites.

The large ship has 40,000+ m2 (430,000+ ft2) of public spaces, 15,000 m2 (161,000 ft2) outdoor deck space, 3440 m2 (37000 ft2) main pool deck area, 7x swimming pools, 13x Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpools/hot tubs), 760+ m2 (8200 ft2) of children's interior complex designed by Lego & Chicco (with 7x rooms dedicated to different age groups), multiple bars, lounges, retail shops, 13 dining venues (including 6x specialty restaurants), 21 bars and lounges, "Zen district" (adults-only complex with 2x swimming pools, solarium/sundeck, shaded outdoor bar lounge), "Family district" (with 10x kids facilities/pools, clubs, playgrounds), family sundeck (kids-friendly sunbathing area), Aquapark (fleet's largest, with playgrounds, splash pools, water cannons, waterslides with virtual reality experiences, High-Trail Ropes Course, Zip-Line. A teens-exclusive Sundeck has its own swimming pool and Jacuzzi. There are also several family-themed "villages" (open-air districts arranged similarly to RCI's neighborhoods) with their own venues and specific amenities.

The list of restaurants features 3x buffet-style (Luna Park Pizza, Il Mercato, La Brasserie) and 6x specialty, including Kaito Teppanyaki Restaurant & Sushi Bar (Asian), HOLA! Tacos & Cantina (Latin American and Mexican food), Marketplace/Il Mercato Buffet (20-hours-a-day-open Lido Restaurant), Eataly Restaurant (Eataly Food Chain designed food store), La Piazzetta (self-service buffet and pizzeria/Afternoon tea service, midnight buffet, seafood), Butcher's Cut (American steakhouse with an open kitchen), Jean-Philippe Maury Chocolaterie (patisserie and creperie by pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury, also offers homemade gelato/gourmet ice creams).

MSC World Europa features a futuristic design with an arrow-shaped (90-degree/vertically positioned) G-bow and a Y-shaped stern that opens onto the World Europa Promenade. World Promenade spans 7 decks (total length 104 m / 341 ft) and continues indoors (to the World Galleria/sized 300 m2 / 3200 ft2) as it is partially covered by a kinetic dome ceiling with a LED screen on which are projected UHD images and videos throughout the day and night. World Galleria is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and boutiques.

On the Promenade ends "The Spiral" (aka The Venom Drop) - a stainless-steel "dry slide". Spanning 11 decks (length 76 m / 250 ft), the slide is the quickest (and most fun) way to get from Deck 22 down to Promenade Deck (deck 8).

The liner's largest entertainment venue is The World Theatre (capacity 1153 seats) hosting original large-scale show productions in the evenings and daily activities like lectures, bingo, trivia games, dance classes. Other signature fun facilities and activities include bumper cars, roller disco, Cinema/Luna Park Arena (300-seat multifunctional complex housing game shows, movies, themed parties, kids' activities, game shows), botanic garden pool (with a retractable glass roof, lounge area, tropical bar).

The ship's interactive entertainment programming features newly designed shows presented at Luna Park Arena (3x concert-style), The World Theatre (5x grand-scale productions), and in Panorama Lounge (4x themed). Also new for the fleet are the surprise exhibits (popping up throughout the boat.

  • During the day, Luna Park Arena also hosts VR Drone Academy (virtual reality experience), Digital Dance Academy (3x "Dance with Flavia" classes by Flavia Cacace-Mistry/1980-born professional dancer), "Wake Up Rave" (by MSC's Doremi kids program), 2x new interactive gameshow, also fun challenges (for breaking Guinness world records). In the evenings, the Arena hosts a large-scale show, followed by 3x interactive musical concerts.
  • The World Theatre stages 5x new large-scale shows, custom-designed and featuring modern technologies (LED visuals, UHD media), unique scenery and props, talented actors, a total of 350 custom-made costumes. The shows are named "Eko" (sustainability-themed, all costumes are made from recycled materials), "Amelia Earhart" (sea-themed, with an E-Bike Stunt Wheel), "Cadmo The Landwalker" (exploration-themed), "Yellow Submarine" (circus show with elements based on The Beatles songs) and "A Night on Broadway" (classic theatrical production).
  • The aft-located (on decks 6-7) Panorama Lounge features an interactive floor and LED screens reflecting the night's theme. On the floor are projected drawings made by the guests onto interactive screens. Nightly, Panorama Lounge hosts 4x 90-minute music-themed experiences themed on different dance styles (waltz, tango, samba, disco) with performances by aerialists, acrobats, singers and dancers, live bands.
  • During the voyage, surprise pop-ups (throughout different parts of the ship) include 2x living exhibitions themed "Earth and Ocean". The surprise experiences are provided by professional actors, artists, and musicians.

The powerplant is based on 5x Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 14V46DF) with combined output 80 MW (107280 hp). The propulsion is based on 2x aft 5-blade propellers and 7x azimuth thrusters (4x bow + 2x stern) with combined output 44 mw (59000 hp). The registered shipowner is COMPANIA NAVIERA WORLD 1 SA, while the registered manager is MSC CROCIERE SPA.

The vessel's construction officially started with the steel-cutting ceremony held on October 31, 2019, at Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard/STX France in St Nazaire . During the ceremony was also officially announced the newbuild's name ("MSC Europa") by Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC Cruises' Executive Chairman).

MSC World Class cruise ship

The vessel's keel-laying / coin ceremony was held on June 29, 2020. During the special event, the ship was presented under the name "MSC World Europa". The ceremony was attended by two "godmothers - Zoe Africa Vago (daughter of Pierfrancesco Vago / shipowner) and Aurore Bezard (shipbuilder employee / in the shipyard's HR / human-resources department). The godmothers placed two specially minted coins under the keel (hull's first block) for good fortune - shipbuilding's historic maritime tradition. At the keel-laying ceremony were also present Pierfrancesco Vago (MSC's Executive Chairman) and Laurent Castaing (Chantiers de l'Atlantique Shipyard's General Manager).

MSC World Europa cruise ship (MSC World Class liner)

The vessel was launched/floated out from drydock on December 2, 2021. On the same day at the French shipyard was held the keel-laying ceremony for the fleetmate MSC Euribia . Both ceremonies were attended by Pierfrancesco Vago and Laurent Castaing. MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia were, respectively, the 15th and 16th boats constructed by Chantiers de l'Atlantique for MSC.

The ship's christening was on November 13, 2022, held at Port Doha's new "Grand Cruise Terminal". The naming ceremony was in partnership with Qatar Airways and led by godmother Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani (1984-born Qatari royal, as well as Qatar Foundation's CEO and Vice Chairperson). The event made World Europa MSC's first cruise ship not to be named by Sophia Loren. The ceremony was attended by Pierfrancesco Vago, Captain Marco Massa (ship's Master), Diego Aponte MSC Cargo's President), Akbar Al Baker (Qatar Tourism's Chairman and Qatar Airways Group's CEO), Hassan Al Thawadi (Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy's secretary general). The ship naming ceremony featured a drone show, a fireworks show, gala dinner, live musical performances (by Qatar Youth Choir and Matteo Bocelli).

The ship's laundry and catering equipment was delivered and installed by ALMACO (contracted by STX France in January 2021). The catering area (~5000 m2 / 53820 ft2) was fitted with 12x galleys/kitchens and 58x pantries (storage rooms for food, crockery, cutlery). ALMACO also provided the ship with 46 provision stores (total area ~2150 m2 / 23140 ft2). The ALMACO-installed laundry equipment is by Girbau Group (1960-founded, Barcelona-based manufacturer) and the laundry system is integrated with the onboard water recycling plant purifying the wastewater.

Ship technology

In mid-January 2020, MSC and the French shipbuilder unveiled the revolutionary R&D (research and development) project PACBOAT that focuses on integrating the new fuel cell technology (SOFC) on LNG-powered cruise ships . PACBOAT allows the generation of power/electricity using as fuel LNG.

  • PACBOAT project's partners are France's CEA (Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission / government-funded research organization) and ADEME (Environment and Energy Management Agency / under the joint authority of country's Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Higher Education and Research), also ENTREPOSE Group (product design and manufacturing), BUREAU VERITAS SA (marine safety certification agency), CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE (as shipbuilder, integrator, project coordinator / subsidiary of STX Europe AS) and MSC CRUISES (as shipowner, subsidiary of MSC -Mediterranean Shipping Company SA).
  • SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) operates at very high temperatures (~750 Celsius / 1382 Fahrenheit). The new technology is ~60% more efficient than the Hydrogen-based PEMFC (Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). PEMFC (aka polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells) is a low-temperature technology developed mainly for transport, stationary and portable applications. The LNG-fueled SOFC technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by ~30% in comparison to the standard Wartsila dual-fuel marine engines (LNG-diesel).
  • In 2022, MSC's SOFC project joined GE (General Electric Company), LR (Lloyd's Register Group Ltd), Ceres (nonprofit organization). GE developed a collaborative design for multi-megawatt (max 10 MW) shipboard SOFC system - powerful enough to provide electricity for large ships, and able to replace the conventional diesel generators.

Among "MSC World Class" key features are the new generation LNG-powerplant , new wastewater treatment plants, ultra-modern marine architecture with a Y-shaped superstructure (better panoramic views, significantly increased number of balcony staterooms), G-bow hull (vertically positioned / at 90-degree angle) improving the vessel's stability and hydrodynamics / fuel efficiency).

In January 2020, the Finnish company Wartsila was contracted to supply the engines, fuel systems, and propulsion systems (thrusters, propellers) for both "MSC World" ships (2022 and 2024). Each boat has 5x Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines (14-cylinder, running on MDO/marine diesel oil, each is fitted with NOx reduction units), 2x Wartsila LNGPac (gas supply system/fuel storage), 7x Wartsila thrusters (steerable/4x bow, 2x stern), 2x Wartsila FPPs (fixed pitch propellers/5-blade). The machinery was scheduled for delivery in mid-2020 (World Europa) and mid-2022 (World America).

This MSC ship class is also the industry's first to introduce LNG-powered SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) to produce all the electricity and heat needed for onboard services without combustion. The technology further reduces (by ~1/3) greenhouse gas emissions in comparison to conventional LNG-powered cruise ships.

  • SOFC is an electrochemical conversion device using solid oxide electrolytes to produce electric power directly from oxidizing a fuel (in this case LNG/liquified natural gas).
  • SOFCs are best known for having relatively fuel flexibility, low cost, low greenhouse gas emissions, high heat and power efficiency, long-term stability.
  • SOFCs operate at very high temperatures (500-1000 C) and thus don't require platinum catalyst material and are not vulnerable to CO catalyst poisoning. IT-SOFCs operate at "intermediate temperatures" (600-800 C). LT-SOFCs operate at "low temperatures" (350-650 C). SOFC-GT is a system that combines a SOFC and a gas turbine.
  • SOFCs are often used in stationary generators (with max power outputs 2 MW). The higher operating temperatures allow SOFCs to be used in the marine industry (engine heat recovery systems), which further increases the ships' overall fuel efficiency.

MSC World Europa's two LNG-based SOFCs (fuel cells by Bloom Energy) are with capacity 75 kW per unit (total output 150 kW). While the liner is in port, Bloom Energy Server shows ~60% efficiency and ~30% reduction of CO emissions without methane slippage.

MSC WORLD-class units are fitted with the latest and most environmentally efficient BWTS (ballast water treatment system) model BIO-SEA B02 0300 (by BIO-UV Group). The technology combines mechanical water filtration with UV disinfection. It is chemical-free and meets the IMO's requirement of 300 m3 per hour water flow rate.

On February 1, 2019, MSC officially revealed the in-cabin digital assistant ZOE. The technology ("cruise industry first") was developed by Harman International (USA-based company, fully-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics) which has developed digital audio solutions for major corporations like Google, Microsoft, Amazon.

  • ZOE is an artificial intelligence device (voice-enabled, with advanced voice recognition software) available in all passenger staterooms.
  • ZOE speaks 7 languages, answer cruise-related questions, provides info on shipboard services-activities-facilities, makes reservations and bookings.
  • The digital device features far-field microphones, top-quality speaker, quad-core processor (for fast response times), direct phone connection (through Bluetooth). The system can also upgrade its own database to answer previously unanswerable questions.
  • Passenger data (including itinerary/tour and shipboard preferences) is stored in the Cloud Storage system and used on the next scheduled voyage.

The device (sized ~15 cm) can be activated whenever passengers choose. A waiver must be signed to agree for their personal data to be stored.

Starting with MSC Bellissima (2019), ZOE is planned for a fleetwide introduction (over the period 2019-2024) and available on all MSC newbuilds.
