Alabama is a soft-rock/ bluegrass/ American country band from Fort Payne, Alabama. The lineup that the band held for most of its career consists of Mark Herndon, Jeff Cook, Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry.

Cousins Randy Owen (lead vocalist/ guitar), and Teddy Gentry (backing vocals/ bass) formed the band, and together they recruited their other cousin Jeff Cook (guitar/ fiddle/ keyboard) in 1969. In 1972 the band got a gig playing as the opening act for various other artists at Canyonland Theme Park, however it was not enough to make a living out of, so the three members pursued various other jobs, putting the band on the backburner.

In March 1973 the band decided to pursue music professionally and the trip moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and performed six nights a week at the Bowery. They also took out a loan in order to record and release their own album to sell at their shows, and to send out as demos to labels. In 1977 the band caught a break with GRT Records signing them, but when the label declared bankruptcy after releasing the one record in their contract, the band was also contractually forbidden to record with another label.

It wasn’t until 1979 when the band was able to self-record and release another album entitled “Alabama Band No. 3;” additionally, Mark Herndon stepped in as drummer to replace Rick Scott. They self-promoted their single “I Wanna Come Over” and eventually the band was able to grab the attention of Dallas based label, MDJ Records. Their second single “My House’s In Alabama” was extremely successful as well, reaching mainstream attention reaching the top 20. It also caught the attention of RCA records, with whom they signed a contract with in 1980.

While with RCA, Alabama had the luxury of creative freedom, and was able to tour extensively after the successful release of more singles. Their release of “Mountain Magic” in 1982 was found with HUGE success, going quadruple platinum with over 6 million copies sold, consequently launching the band into super stardom. By January 1986 the band had a number of hits, allowing RCA to release a Greatest Hits compilation.

Despite their albums still reaching gold and silver statuses, and selling millions of copies, the band’s popularity started to decline in the 1990s. Despite the decline, however, the band was still finding continued success with sales of their singles and shows. By May 2002 the band announced a farewell tour, collecting over $15 million in ticket sales alone.

Live reviews

There are many bands who have tried to make music that embodies the sense of a place. Whether it be the West coast of California, central New York or London's east end it is quite a feat to create a sound that sonically represents your surrounding. Alabama were clearly confident in doing this after taking their namesake from their home state way back in 1969.

It is fair to say that the bluegrass rock that the band creates really does seem to embody the oozing melting pot that is the deep south. Having enjoyed commercial and critical success during their heyday, the band continues to tour relentlessly so as to satisfy the huge demand to see the veterans.

Fans old and new gather to enjoy classics such as 'Tennessee River' and 'Song Of The South' performed in the anthemic manner of which is accustomed with Alabama. A wonderful sense of nostalgia prevails throughout and the band performs with skill and determination onstage encouraged by the baying masses. By the final singalong of 'Mountain Music' it is obvious Alabama could hope for better musical representation.

Alabama...no not Alabama Shakes, this is Alabama...just Alabama! But trust me ladies and gentlemen this classic band define Alabama so well. Formed in 1969 this American band are still rocking hard, who says grandads cant rock nowadays... It seems like you guys have been missing a bit of sing-a-long country music because these guys are bac touring again! They reel off some oldtime tunes which will get you into the Southern blues no problem! 'Song of the South' with its timeless guitar riff and sweet soothing vocals which anyone will sing to just 10 seconds of hearing it. Alabama rattle through their anthems with such ease, playing effortlessly it appears. Such feel good vibes from these country Gods, with material such as; 'Mountain Music' and lets not forget the heartbreaking 'American Pride'.

If you love American country music then you cant go wrong with Alabama! These oldies but goldies are worth witnessing live no doubt about it! I love blues music myself, but these guys are literaly swaying me to country music!

Fantastic Venue...little smaller than the big arenas so great seats no matter what. The show was absolutely amazing - they still rock after all these years! Full house and fun crowd ...what a great night! I will definitely be going back to Sioux Falls for more concerts. Even if it’s a 10 hour drive for us it was a true adventure! Would love to see Alabama again and again...we danced the entire show and was not left disappointed. They played all my favourites and more!

Enjoyable. The voice is weakening a bit. I think too much reacting with the crowd. I see it as filler so they can get their breath back. The song choice great and you can never doubt the strength of their legacy. If you are a true Alabama fan you loved it. If you are a music fan and not a loyalist it was just OK.

I saw Alabama in 1986 in Sacramento. They were fantastic. I have a pair of Randy Owens red wrist bands. I won't say how I got them!! It was all on the up and up. Alabama is one of the greatest country rock bands ever. Randy you are soooo easy on the eyes!!

Write your review of Alabama here.. The concert was outstanding. There is a reason Randy (great voice), Teddy (fantastic bassist), Jeff (talented musician) have lasted 40 years. ALABAMA is still a great band. No frills just great music. Thank you!!!

We so enjoyed seeing Alabama, they went all the way to make sure we all enjoyed the show. We have listened to Alabama's music for many years, and really hated it when they retired. We hope in the near future they will book more shows.

Outstanding show!!! Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry, and Jeff Cook still have it after 40 years. Their harmonies are still rock solid. They truly love their music and their fans. No wonder they are legends.

Alabama Extend 50th Anniversary Tour With Charlie Daniels, Exile

By Stephen L. Betts

Stephen L. Betts

Since 1969, pioneering country group Alabama have been delivering an influential brand of high-energy performances that have culminated in numerous Entertainer of the Year honors and membership in the Country Music Hall of Fame. Now, the trio of Randy Owen, Jeff Cook and Teddy Gentry have added nearly 30 additional stops on their current 50th Anniversary Tour, with shows just announced in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Bangor, Maine; Tallahassee, Florida; and Ottawa.

In addition to the Charlie Daniels Band, others appearing on the tour include the Marshall Tucker Band, John Anderson, Restless Heart, Exile, John Michael Montgomery, Scotty McCreery and Canadian artist Charlie Major. A date with the Beach Boys is also slated to be announced.

“We are very fortunate to have made many friends over the last 50 years,” bass player-vocalist Teddy Gentry said in a statement. “On this tour, we decided to ask some of them to come along and play with us. We have the best of the best. It’s a lot of fun to hang out and watch our special guests every night.”

Alabama launched their first Farewell Tour in 2002, which ran for two years, after which the members recorded solo projects, playing together again in 2005 to benefit Hurricane Katrina victims. Lead singer Randy Owen battled prostate cancer in 2010 and singer-guitarist Jeff Cook was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2017. By that time, they had reunited, without drummer Mark Herndon, for two lengthy tours and the release of Southern Drawl, their first new album in 14 years.

ABOUT ALABAMA

Over 50 years ago, Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry and Randy Owen left the cotton farms of Fort Payne, Alabama to spend the summer playing music in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina bar called The Bowery. It took them six long years of tip jars and word-of-mouth to earn the major label deal they'd been dreaming of. Then, seemingly no time at all to change the face of country music. ALABAMA, country music’s first band, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2005. The group is known for hit songs including “Mountain Music,” “Roll On,” “Dixieland Delight” and “If You're Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band).” From humble beginnings picking cotton in the fields to international stars, ALABAMA went on to sell 80 million albums and charted 43 No.1 hits, becoming the most successful band in the history of country music. In November 2022, ALABAMA co-founder Jeff Cook passed following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. With his prior encouragement and wishes, ALABAMA continues touring on a limited basis, keeping the iconic music they created alive for the current and future generation of fans.

ABOUT GARY ALLAN

With the allure of a modern day outlaw, Gary Allan has won over fans, peers, and critics with his signature blend of smoldering vocals, rebellious lyrics, and raucous live performances. While becoming a force on the country music scene, Allan has remained true to his artistic voice each step of the way. Allan’s most recent album, RUTHLESS , was released in June 2021.  The 13-song album features songs produced by Mark Wright, Tony Brown, Greg Droman, Jay Joyce, and Allan himself.  His previous album, SET YOU FREE , topped the Billboard 200 (Pop Chart), a career first for Allan.  The album also made its debut at the top of the Billboard Country Album chart (for the fourth time in a row), and produced his fifth #1 country radio chart topper with “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain).”  The California native has released eight additional studio albums selling over 8 million albums, been certified platinum on three back-to-back albums, and been certified gold five times.  Allan has five #1 hits at country radio, fourteen Top 10 hits to his credit and amassed over 2.8 billion total streams.

ABOUT DUSTY SLAY

Long hair, tobacco, over-sized glasses and a trucker hat, Dusty Slay is the self-effacing bourbon-voiced Southern comedian next door with a knack for observational, blue-collar humor and the nerve to say what everyone else is thinking. He grew up the son of a single mom in an Alabama trailer park and evokes laughs about everything from Cracker Barrel to his aversion to soap. The 40-year-old Nashville native is a mainstay on the country music scene, making his Grand Ole Opry debut in 2019 – the youngest at the time, and adding dozens of appearances in the historic Circle ever since. He has also appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live, has a Comedy Central special to his credit and just released his first hour-long Netflix special "Workin' Man" that he filmed about three hours from home, at the Bijou theater in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Multi-platinum selling country rock group ALABAMA has announced their “ROLL ON 2 NORTH AMERICA” tour will include a stop in Norfolk, VA at CHARTWAY ARENA on APRIL 25 featuring very special guest LEE GREENWOOD.

Over 50 years ago, cousins Teddy Gentry, Randy Owen and the late Jeff Cook left the cotton farms of Fort Payne, Alabama to spend the summer playing music in a Myrtle Beach, South Carolina bar called The Bowery. It's a classic American tale of rags to riches. From humble beginnings picking cotton in the fields to international stars, ALABAMA went on to sell 80 million albums and change the face and sound of country music.

Quality songs that have become the soundtrack for American life are the foundation for ALABAMA's stellar career. The group introduced rock style guitars, lights, pyrotechnics and sounds to the country audience that has inspired many of today's brightest country stars including Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan. While their music continues to stand the test of time, their numbers and stats are beyond compared.

Five decades since starting the band, ALABAMA has charted 43 #1 singles, including 21 #1 singles in a row, and have won dozens of CMA, GRAMMY®, and ACM Awards. They are members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Musicians Hall of Fame and have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition, they are world-class philanthropists who have raised millions of dollars for various charities.

ABOUT LEE GREENWOOD Throughout his expansive career, international country music icon Lee Greenwood has earned multiple CMA and ACM Awards, a Grammy Award for Top Male Vocal Performance on “I.O.U,” in 1985, and a multitude of other prestigious awards nominations. His discography includes twenty-two studio albums, seven compilation albums, seven No. 1 hits, and thirty-eight singles including songs like “It Turns Me Inside Out,” “Ring On Her Finger Time on Her Hands,” “She’s Lyin’,” “I Don’t Mind the Thorns if You’re the Rose,” “Dixie Road,” “Somebody’s Gonna Love You,” “Going Going Gone,” “You Got A Good Love Comin’,” among others. His stand-out hit “God Bless the U.S.A.” has been in the top five on the country singles charts three times (1991, 2001, and 2003), giving it the distinction of being the only song in any genre of music to achieve that feat. It reached the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart shortly after 9/11. Known for his stand-out patriotism and support of the U.S. military, Greenwood has been honored with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s National Patriot’s Award and entertained troops on more than 30 USO Tours.

The trek is presented by Kenworth

Alabama has revealed its 2024 Roll On II North America Tour, presented by Kenworth. The multi-award-winning country group will tour the countryside, performing in arenas, amphitheaters, and festivals in over 20 cities. Tour stops include Clearwater, FL; Norfolk, VA; Hershey, PA; Orange Beach, AL; Columbia, SC; Columbus, OH, and a stop in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada.

“I look forward to singing ‘Mountain Music,’ ‘Tennessee River,’ ‘Feels So Right’ and so many more,” says Alabama frontman Randy Owen. “It’s just a matter of getting up on stage and enjoying it. We can’t wait to see the fans who made it all possible.”

This year’s tour will feature special guest artists at select live concert dates. Special guest performers include The Marshall Tucker Band, Diamond Rio, Jamey Johnson, the Bellamy Brothers, Lee Greenwood, and more.

Earlier this year, Alabama also announced June Jam XVIII , set to place on June 1st at the VFW Fairgrounds in Fort Payne, AL. Owen and Teddy Gentry plan to unveil this year’s talent lineup in the coming weeks. Last year’s resurrection of the historic event drew nearly 11,000 fans and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity efforts throughout the state.

Additionally, CMT will honor the multi-platinum-selling band later this year with CMT Giants: Alabama .  The star-studded TV special will feature performances and appearances by Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Evander Holyfield, Jason Aldean, Jamey Johnson, Lionel Richie, Little Big Town, Lorrie Morgan, Luke Bryan, Martina McBride, Old Dominion, Pam Tillis, Riley Green, Sam Hunt and Vince Gill. Alabama Announce ‘Roll On II’ 2024 Tour Dates

Over the past several years, the members of Alabama have weathered their fair share of health challenges and other logistical difficulties, keeping them from the stage. So they never take the opportunity to tour for granted — and they're getting that chance once again in 2024.

On Thursday (March 21), the group announced a lineup of dates billed as the 2024 Roll On II North American Tour, a reprisal of their 2023 tour of the same name. It's a nod to the band's "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)," a hit from 1984, as well as a fitting name for a tour presented by Kenworth Trucking Company.

In a statement, frontman Randy Owen says fans who attend a show in 2024 can look forward to singing along to all their favorite Alabama hits.

"I look forward to singing 'Mountain Music,' 'Tennessee River,' 'Feels So Right' and so many more," Owen relates in a statement. "It's just a matter of getting up onstage and enjoying it. We can't wait to see the fans who made it all possible."

For many of the shows, the band will have some extra musical pals along to make the moment even more special. Diamond Rio , the Marshall Tucker Band, Jamey Johnson , Lee Greenwood and the Bellamy Brothers are all booked to perform on various dates on the tour.

In late 2023, Owen gave Taste of Country a positive update on his health , but he stopped short of committing to tour plans for 2024.

"I'm 73 years old. I just had my tests and everything, and everything came back really good. I had my flu shot. So I'm ready to go," he said at that time, but added that the health setbacks he's suffered in the past have left him cautious — and appreciative of every chance he gets to set foot onstage.

"I just never know. I enjoy every show and thank God I get to do one more show," Owen added.

For ticketing information for Alabama's upcoming tour dates, visit the band's website . More dates are expected to be announced at a later time.

BOYS IN THE  BAND THE  ALABAMA TRIBUTE

B o y s  i n  t h e  b a n d t h e  a l a b a m a  t r i b u t e.

In 1969 three cousins in Fort Payne, Alabama, joined their talents to create Down Home country music.  Young Country became Wild Country who played for seven years as the house band in Myrtle Beach, SC, at a beachside bar called The Bowery. There they would change their name to Alabama, hit it big with their first number one record "Tennessee River", and the rest is history. Boys in the Band also hail from Fort Payne, Alabama, and aim to give the Alabama experience to lifelong fans and introduce the younger generations to the magic of Alabama's timeless music. The Alabama Tribute show is a high energy show with note for note renditions of Alabama's live performances over their fifty year reign as the greatest country music group of all time.

There will never be another Alabama, but Boys in the Band aims to keep sharing the music and showmanship made famous by their small town heroes.

  • Iconic ‘90s rockers coming to Alabama, celebrating 25th anniversary of hit album

Get ready to be happy, if you love ‘90s rock. Everclear is going on tour this fall, and the band’s founder and prime mover, Art Alexakis , is promising a set list filled with hits.

Two Alabama dates are on the agenda: Oct. 24 at the WorkPlay soundstage in Birmingham, and Oct. 25 at The Plant in Dothan. Tickets for both shows go on sale Friday, April 26, via the venue websites. Prices for general admission tickets are TBA, but pre-sales are underway for VIP tickets and meet-and-greet packages at WorkPlay ($125 and $225, plus service charges) and The Plant ($149.51 and $267.06, fees included).

Everclear has announced 31 dates for its fall tour, Sept. 13 through Nov. 2, on a bill with Marcy Playground (who gave us “Sex and Candy”) and Jimmie’s Chicken Shack (MTV favorites with “High”). The tour is meant to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Everclear’s “Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile.”

The platinum-selling album, which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart, was released in 2000. If Alexakis is slightly ahead of schedule for the record’s silver jubilee, there’s a reason for that. “Songs from an American Movie Vol. One” was in the works in 1999, as Alexakis noted in a press release, and he’s pointing to that with the tour. Also, Everclear plans to release a vinyl edition of the album later this year on Intervention Records, date TBA.

“This will be a great time to celebrate our album ‘Songs From An American Movie Vol. One,’ which was created 25 years ago,” Alexakis said in the release. “A lot of these songs we haven’t played in a while or, in some cases, we’ve never played live before. We’ll of course be playing the hits and fan favorites too. It’s going to be a fun show for both old school and new fans alike.”

See the full list of Everclear tour dates here .

Everclear, formed in the early ‘90s, produced a slate of dynamic music throughout the decade and beyond. The band came to fame with albums such as 1995′s “Sparkle and Fade” and 1997′s “So Much for the Afterglow,” and produced hit singles such as “Everything to Everyone,” “Santa Monica,” “Heroin Girl,” “I Will Buy You a New Life” and “Wonderful.”

“Songs From An American Movie” actually has two volumes, both released in 2000 and spearheaded by Alexakis. The first volume, “Learning How to Smile,” is said to be heavily influenced by 1970s pop music. (It includes the hit single “Wonderful” and a cover of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.”) The second volume, subtitled “Good Time for a Bad Attitude,” has a darker hard rock emphasis, and was not as successful as its predecessor.

In an interview with eonmusic , a British website, Alexakis revealed that he initially intended to combine the two records into a double album, but the band’s management pushed for two separate releases. Alexakis said he reluctantly agreed, but later regretted the decision. He evidently prefers the first volume, hence his emphasis on that record on the fall tour.

“In retrospect, I would have ... taken all those songs and like gotten rid of six songs — including ‘Unemployed Boyfriend’ — and it makes a pretty good record, of just eighteen to twenty songs,” Alexakis told eonmusic . “It would have been a great double record, and it would have been double platinum, all that stuff. But, you know, it was an idea at the time, and we did something bold and different, and there are really good songs on both of them. But I think the first record is pretty great.”

Everclear has a significant history of concerts in the Birmingham area, including shows at the BJCC Arena, Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, WorkPlay theater, Jubilee Joe’s Crawfish Boil , the Schaeffer Eye Center Crawfish Boil and more. The band also has played at Gadsden Riverfest, Alabaster CityFest, the National Shrimp Festival in Gulf Shores, Mars Music Hall in Huntsville and more.

Alexakis, 61, has performed in Alabama as a solo artist, as well. He’s long been the face of Everclear, as the band’s founder, frontman and primary songwriter. Along with Alexakis, Everclear’s current lineup features guitarist Davey French, bassist Freddy Herrera and drummer Brian Nolan.
