Yash’s father, Chandarpal, was a fast bowler and played in the Vizzy Trophy in the late 80s and early 90s. “I never got any support from my father. In fact, my father always used to say there is no future in cricket, I am wasting my time, I should prepare for government examinations,” recalls Dayal, who works in the AG office.
His eyes lit up when Chandrapal saw his then six-year-old son playing cricket with their cousins outside their house. The training of Yash started back then under the watchful eyes of his father. [Read more]
“I have not got time to eat today. There are a lot of customers today,” Ram Pal, Kuldeep's father said between giving haircuts. “I have been doing this for the past 30 years. I am happy for my son. He has made me proud. I had never supported his passion for the game. I have scolded and even beaten him for playing cricket when he was in school. But he never gave up on his dreams,” Ram Pal, who makes Rs 8,000 a month, said. [Read more]

Chetan Sharma: Those who perform will always have a way back in the team. For him to come back into the team, he will have to score more runs. He knows that. He has been in constant touch with the selection committee. The middle order is so packed that even Hanuma Vihari has found a spot in the squad.
Chetan Sharma: It would be wrong for me to comment on any of the players during the middle of the World Cup. The team has been doing brilliantly.
Chetan Sharma: No player asked to be rested. We have taken the proactive initiative to rest players by getting in touch with the medical team and the team management.
Chetan Sharma: Middle of the tournament, we cannot have conversations on this matter. To have these players in the team is a big plus for the youngsters. If they feel something, they will approach themselves.
Chetan Sharma: He will definitely be part of the team for the Australia series. We do not want to rush things with him this time as we did before. So we've been cautious with him for the Bangladesh series.
Chetan Sharma: We are giving him the opportunities to him where we can. We opted for him in the India A squad. I've been speaking about him to the selectors as well. He will get an opportunity very soon.
Chetan Sharma: We spoke about him. If he hasn't been selected it isn't because there's a shortcoming in him. He was there and he will be back up shortly.

How many players from India's World Cup squad do you see featuring in the tour of New Zealand?
T20 World Cup squad: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami.

Till the end, the match continued to twist and turn as only a low-scoring thriller could. For India’s fans the Group 2 encounter against South Africa in Perth was a match they lost, won and lost again. The defeat-stamping moment came when David Miller gloved Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s third ball off the last over beyond the keeper’s head, reducing the required target to one from three balls. Ngidi, Nortje, Rabada and Parnell had produced sustained hostility as the Indian top order and middle order crumbled. [Read More]
The last time India toured New Zealand was in January-February 2020. Remember the world then? Before Covid-19 was yet to put a halt at everything including cricket, India sealed their first T20I series win in New Zealand, in some style. A 5-0 clean sweep that included two games that were decided by super over. The men in blue did lose the ODI series that followed 3-0.
With two wins in three matches, India are second in Group 2 of the Super 12. The men in blue trail one point behind South Africa and are level with Bangladesh, who they face next at the Adelaide Oval. Their final match would be against Zimababwe. Wins in the next two games should help India progress into the semifinals. And with New Zealand sitting on top of Group 1, it looks like the two may meet in the semifinal.

New Zealand Plans to Celebrate Centenary of 1926 Indian Army Hockey Team Tour to NZ: Envoy David Pine

According to New Zealand Indian Sports Association website, the touring 1926 Indian Army hockey team is "significant in both Indian and New Zealand sporting history because it was the first overseas tour by an Indian hockey team".
New Zealand has planned to mark the centenary of the 1926 tour of an Indian Army hockey team, which included a young Dhyan Chand, to that country as part of its vision to celebrate the “breadth of our sporting relationship”, its envoy said on Friday.
Outgoing New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India David Pine said 2026 will be a “special year of our relationship”.
He was speaking during an interaction hosted by think-tank Ananta Aspen Centre here.
Asked about his nation’s plan to mark the centenary of the historic tour, the envoy said, “Yes, we want to use it as a trigger to celebrate the breadth of our sporting relationship.”
He said an informal committee has shaped up and things will grow with time.
“In 2026, we are looking to celebrate that. In 1926, the Indian Army Hockey Team came to New Zealand with great Dhyan Chand. They stayed for three months,” Pine said, adding the touring team absolutely changed the way people engaged with it.
“So, we will celebrate all our sporting connections,” he said, adding that beyond cricket, weightlifting, judo, boxing and other sports connections will be celebrated.
New Zealand is also expecting visit of an Indian prime minister to that country in year 2026.
“It’s been a long-standing invitation,” he said.

The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was formed in 1925, one year after the formation of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), according to the official website of the Olympics.
“The IHF organised its first international tour in 1926 to New Zealand, where the Indian hockey men’s team played 21 matches and won 18. The tournament saw the emergence of a young Dhyan Chand, who would go on to become arguably the best hockey player the world has ever seen,” it said.
According to New Zealand Indian Sports Association website, the touring 1926 Indian Army hockey team is “significant in both Indian and New Zealand sporting history because it was the first overseas tour by an Indian hockey team”.
“The star player of this team was Dhyan Chand whose magical Indian dribble and goal scoring captured the imagination of the public wherever he played. He toured again in 1935 as captain of the all-India team and was a member of the victorious Indian teams at the 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games,” it said.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said there were already indications that the three matches against Brendon McCullum's team would attract the same sort of bumper attendances witnessed for the two home tests against Australia in February and March.
"In the past, there's often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers," he said.

The T20 World Cup takes place in the West Indies and United States in June, while England also have a five-match ODI series against Australia in September.
England are currently last in the World Test Championship table following a 4-1 series defeat to India at the start of the year.
Having won just three of their 10 matches since the 2023-25 edition of the competition began, England require a major turnaround to have a chance of reaching next year's final at Lord's.

"The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers. "We're looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well." Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.
Both Australia and Sri Lanka women's teams, alongside Sri Lanka and Pakistan men's teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer. The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later.
