Because life's too short to stay home …, on the rock river in illinois, from the town of oregon, visitors follow in black hawk's footsteps..

Black Hawk on the Rock River.

© Beth Gauper

In the northwest Illinois town of Oregon, a 48-foot concrete figure gazes over a river valley, arms folded.

Over the years, the valley has been home to many ambitious men. Abraham Lincoln joined the militia here. John Deere forged the first steel plow. Ronald Reagan got his first lifeguard job.

Chief Black Hawk, the man who inspired the gigantic blufftop statue, also had an ambition: to keep this beautiful valley for his own people.

In 1804, four Sauk men ceded it in exchange for $1,000 per year in goods, and in 1829, the government kicked out the Indians and sold the land to settlers.

In 1832, Black Hawk tried to reclaim the land, sparking a "war" that ended in the slaughter of his people.

The debacle made a romantic figure of the doomed Black Hawk.

"Rock River was a beautiful country," he said. "I loved my towns, my cornfields, and the home of my people. I fought for it."

Today, banners on Oregon street lights feature Black Hawk's face, and painted tipis can be found in and around town.

Across the river, the statue known as Black Hawk was created between 1908 and 1910 as the Eternal Indian by Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft. Now it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Visitors can walk through the town's entire history in Lowden State Park, on the blufftop where Lorado Taft founded the Eagle's Nest Art Colony in 1898. Today, it's a field campus for Northern Illinois University.

Oregon makes a fun getaway any time for the three state parks that surround it and for the Rock River, which flows from Wisconsin's Horicon Marsh to the Mississippi at Rock Island and has been named a national water trail.

Excursions on the Pride of Oregon paddlewheeler take tourists upstream. On the east side of the river, Black Hawk rises above the treetops, and on the west side, passenger see the stone turrets of a castle.

The courthouse in Oregon.

It's a Tudor-style manor with 25 rooms and four secret passages, built between 1928 and 1930 by Walter Strong, owner and publisher of the Chicago Daily News. Visits to another publisher's castle — William Randolph Hearst's famous estate in San Simeon, Calif. — inspired it.

Today, the Stronghold Center is a Presbyterian retreat complex, open to the public for tours or overnight group lodgings and at the annual Olde English Faire in October, a gathering of knights and ladies and jesters and jousters, with medieval music and games.

For excursions downstream, outfitters rent canoes and kayaks for visits to Castle Rock State Park or Grand Detour, home of the John Deere Historic Site .

In 1838, the Vermont-born blacksmith figured out how to make a plow that would cut through the dense Illinois soil. After a move to Moline in 1848, his business became the giant farm-equipment manufacturer, still named for John Deere.

Dixon is just around the bend from Grand Detour. It's the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan, who safeguarded swimmers from the banks of the Rock River. The Ronald Reagan Trail includes his first home in Dixon and stops in 12 other northwest Illinois towns.

A third state park is seven miles west of Oregon. White Pines Forest State Park is a lovely oasis of pine forest, creeks and rock outcroppings amid the rolling farm fields.

In spring, the park's trails are lined with wildflowers; in fall, the park is cloaked in bright reds, oranges and golds.

There are inns in Oregon, but the park's White Pines Inn is a special place to stay, with a log lodge and cabins built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Its inviting restaurant is famous for its Paul Bunyan buffet on Sundays and serves such classics as chicken pot pie, peach cobbler and apple dumplings. There's a dinner theater, too.

In town, visitors can follow the Trail of Painted Tipis, each created by a different artist, from late April to mid-November.

Stronghold Cente in Oregon.

There are a few antiques stores to visit downtown. Restaurants include the '50s-style Jay's Drive-In , which serves caramel-apple shakes and "the best butter bun burgers around."

Oregon is only two hours from Chicago, but bistros and boutiques haven't reached this town of 3,700. Just as well, because a down-home style suits such a historic place.

Trip Tips: Oregon, Illinois

Getting there: It's 25 miles south of Rockford and 100 miles west of Chicago.

Events: First weekend of October, Olde English Faire at the Stronghold Center and Autumn on Parade in town.

Black Hawk statue : This 48-foot concrete statue looms over the river. Visitors can drive into the park and walk to the overlook at the statue's feet. Admission is free.

During the War of 1832, the only place Black Hawk and his band attacked was a makeshift fort in the village of Elizabeth, near Galena. For more, see Black Hawk on the Apple River .

Abraham Lincoln was a captain in the militia pursuing Black Hawk but did not engage in combat.

For more about War of 1832 sites in Wisconsin, see Road trip: Black Hawk's trail .

Rock River cruises: The Pride of Oregon paddlewheeler offers daily cruises, some including lunch or dinner. It docks at Maxson Riverside Restaurant just north of Oregon on Illinois 2. Reserve at 815-732-4540.

Bison tours: Just east of Dixon, the Nature Conservancy's Nachusa Grasslands has a herd of more than 100 bison . Volunteers give free two-hour tours . Sign-ups are posted at 7 a.m. the first day of each month, and places fill quickly.

Accommodations: The 1927 White Pines Inn in White Pines Forest State Park west of Oregon rents 13 small log cabins and 12 cabin suites, each with gas fireplaces and mini-fridges. They're air-conditioned.

There are many packages, and watch for specials in winter, spring and late fall. The restaurant is open from March to Christmas.

Near the river in Oregon, the 1840s Patchwork Inn has nine rooms.

There's a camper cabin in Lowden State Park.

The Stronghold Center has accommodations for groups from 10 to 100 in lodges in the woods, dorm rooms in the Castle, the hotel-style Heritage Lodge, rustic cabins or camping. Meals can be arranged.

Camping: There's camping in the blufftop Lowden State Park across the river from downtown Oregon and White Pines Forest State Park west of Oregon.

Dining: The restaurant at the White Pines Inn serves home-style food, including a large Sunday buffet, in a very attractive setting. Reserve at 815-946-3817.

Stumble upon historic sites

John Deere Historic Site

John Deere Historic site

The world-famous company John Deere was first founded in Northern Illinois in the mid-1830s by blacksmith and repairman John Deere.

The company was revolutionary with not only the invention of the self-scouring steel plow but also the unique (for the time) business model of manufacturing products before sales.

The John Deere historic site commemorates this pioneer of the industry by preserving the original Deere family home, first built in 1836.

The house has been maintained with period household items to accurately portray how the family and their live-in apprentices would have lived.

There is also a working blacksmith shop on site. The site is an ode to pioneer living as well as the unique figure of John Deere.

There is also a gift shop for memorabilia available.

There are 5 different buildings, each displaying a different aspect of farm life.

15 Best Small Towns to Visit in Illinois (by a Local)

According to the most recent census, Chicago makes up about a quarter of the population of Illinois .  That’s a big city with a big draw. But the majority of the state is made up of cornfields, suburbs, rolling plains, and tight knit communities. And these are just as worthy of being high on your bucket-list.

I’m an Illinois local (born and raised) and have explored all that the state has to offer. The American Midwest is on full display in this list I created of the 15 best small towns to visit in Illinois:

Hiking around Galena

Consistently ranked as one of the best places to visit in the American Midwest, Galena is a big draw for honeymooners, foodies, and city dwellers who need a little rest and relaxation.  It used to be a mining community and now is one of the top two tourism stops in Illinois . Just about 3,500 people call Galena home and they know first-hand that there is plenty to do.

Visit the former home of U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant, spend an afternoon at one of ten nearby golf courses, or maybe a full day at one of the two wineries in town. On the Galena River you can boat, canoe, or kayak, and just 13 miles from town flows the mighty Mississippi.  If you really want to get out in nature I suggest you visit Apple River Canyon State Park and enjoy camping and fishing in the heart of the parks striking limestone cliffs. If you’re visiting in June, be sure to check out the annual Great Galena Balloon Race.

2. Elmhurst

At the windmill Elmhurst

Elmhurst’s most popular resident is undoubtedly Carl Sandburg, a Chicago poet who brought a lot of positive attention to the city and the state. I recommenda visit to Elmhurst Historical Museum to view some of the poets’ archives.

The town was founded in the 19th century and attracts a large number of artists – and their wealthy patrons. Elmhurst College has a reputation as a progressive liberal arts school, and the reputation spills over into town. If you’re looking for a sleepy town to get lost in, or maybe start the next great American novel, give Elmhurst a try.

3. Galesburg

Galesburg, Illinois

This is small town at its best.  Shaped by the rolling praires that surround it, Galesburg is a step back in time. No matter your age you’ll feel nostalgia and the beauty to be found in simple living when you visit.  For most of its history, it has been a railway centre for Illinois.

If you’re travelling with a family, you’ll love the Galesburg Railroad Museum and the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum.  The railway has shaped the town and you can see the influence today.  Visit Lake Storey Recreational Area for swimming and picnicking in the summer, and in winter try ice skating and cross country skiing. Each August there is a Civil War re-enactment during Heritage Days.

Nauvoo

If you’re into interesting history, it doesn’t get better than Nauvoo .  In the 1840’s it was home to the Mormon Church, when they sought refuge and a plot of land to live undisturbed by the United States government.  It was here that founder Joseph Smith was killed by an angry mob – an event that led to the migration of the church to present day Utah.

There are more than 60 restored historic buildings in Nauvoo including the Browning Home and Gunsmith Shop, several museums, the former home of Brigham Young, a working blacksmith shop, and a downtown area where you watch candle making, bread making, and a variety of other pioneer demonstrations.

5. Arlington Heights

View of Lake Terramere, Arlington Heights

The City of Good Neighbors is an historically agricultural town.  Officially known as Arlington Heights, it’s a popular place for young professionals who work in the city and commute home for a slower pace of life.

It’s also a family friendly place – be sure to check out Kids Adventure Hunts which lets parents and children explore the downtown area by following clues and taking pictures of their discoveries.  For nightlife, try the Metropolis Performing Arts Center which produces both theater and musical performance.

6. Mount Carroll

Carroll County Courthouse

Just ten miles from the Mississippi River is Mount Carrol.  Though firmly a Midwestern town, it’s often referred to as “the New England of the Midwest,’ thanks to its distinctive architecture.  The perfect place for walking or biking, it’s everything you want a small town to be.

They’ve got an active community playhouse, a wildly popular bowling alley, a historic (and beautiful) grain mill on the Wakarusa River, and a strong arts and music scene.  What’s incredible about Mount Carroll is that it looks basically the same as it did 50 years ago. Enjoy the eclectic atmosphere, fantastic coffee shops, and great local food during your visit.

7. Arthur/Arcola

Arcola, Illinois

The best places for intriguing shopping are the Amish towns of Arthur and Arcola. Send heirloom and handmade gifts home from your trip through Amish country, and you’re sure to be a hit.  The appeal of these towns is a simpler way of life.  Here, horse drawn buggies share the road with cars, the food is hearty, and tradition is everything.

Check out the Amish own coffee shop, followed by the Amish bakery, and then take a visit out to see the popular quilt shows at Rockome Gardens. There’s always a festival in Arcola – see if you can time your visit to attend the Horse Progress days, the Raggedy Ann Festival, the Amish Country Bicycle Tour, or Oktoberfest. Be sure to take home some Amish fudge.  You won’t be sorry.

Fulton

The heritage of Fulton comes from the Dutch, and the influence is evident all over town.  Each May the town hosts the Dutch Days festival and they are home to one of the only authentic Dutch windmills in the United States. It was manufactured in the Netherlands and then shipped to Fulton in 2000.

Quaint is the perfect word for Fulton, but then, so are charming and idyllic. You can see what pioneer living was like when you visit Heritage Canyon, see the history of the area at Martin House Museum, and check out everything else the town has on offer – Andresen Nature Centre, the historic downtown, two gorgeous national scenic by-ways, and the Great River Bike Trail.

9. Bishop Hill

Steeple Building, Bishop Hill

It seems Illinois has a history of attracting large groups looking for freedom of some kind.  Nauvoo attracted both the Mormons and then later a group of French communists, and Bishop Hill attracted a group of Swedes hoping to form a utopian society under the guidance of Erik Jansson.

The city was added to the National Register of Historic Places in the 1970’s and the town is home to artists, craftsmen, galleries, boutiques, and good restaurants. This country village is an ideal place to enjoy a mix of the old and the new.  Check out the Midsummer Music Festival if you’re travelling in June.

10. Greenville

Greenville

Greenville is one of the oldest communities in Illinois, and they take their heritage seriously.  Downtown is old-fashioned and unique.  Local artists have made murals around town as part of a restoration project.  There’s a large stone memorial that marks the exact spot where both Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln made speeches while they were running for president in 1858.

If you want a little more history, be sure to visit the American Farm Heritage Museum and Hills Fort, aimed at preserving agricultural history. Now, Greenville is a college town filled with festivals.  Here you can find the Graffiti Car Show, the county fair, the World Powered Parachute Championships, and the Agape Music Festival –  point of town pride for almost 40 years.

11. Alto Pass/Jonesboro

Alto Pass, Illinois

Ranked on the list of 100 Best Small Town Getaways are Alto Pass and Jonesboro.  Topping of the list of fabulous attractions are top notch outdoor activities, great wineries, and agri-tourism. The orchards there are famous for peaches and apples.  Nearby is Shawnee National Forest and many huntsmen come here in season for turkey, goose, and bear hunting.

There’s also rare bird watching available and an annual rattlesnake migration – which isn’t so much something you want to go and watch, but rather something to be fascinated by. If you want more outdoor activities there’s Giant City State Park, the Trail of Tears State Forest, the Ozark Hills, and Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge.  Recently several wineries have joined forces to create the Shawnee Hill Wine Trail, which I would recommend having a look at.

12. Woodstock

Woodstock

If you’re a fan of American movies, you might recognize Woodstock from movies like Planes, Trains and Automobiles as well as Groundhog Day. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was named a “Preserve America Community” by the White House.  There is great shopping alongside a nostalgic and yet buzzing atmosphere.

Spend the day walking about town and soaking up the relaxation. They’ve got phenomenal hand-crafted pottery, leather goods, handmade jewellery, fine art, antiques, and more.  The restaurants are eclectic and sure to leave you talking. At Christmastime come for Woodstock’s Victorian Christmas celebration complete with horse drawn carriages and carollers in period dress walking the streets.

Elsah

Almost impossible to find, Elsah is tucked away in a ravine, surrounded by thick woods.  On either side of the ravine are large bluffs with a view down to the Mississippi River. Simply put, it’s gorgeous.  And because of its location, it has remained a small town, been able to maintain most of its historic charm, and become known as an amazing place to observe the American Bald Eagle.

Native Americans once settled here and geologist love to study the pre-historic rock formations nearby. It’s really a rather dramatic oasis in the midst of the flat Midwestern plans.  Stroll tree shaded streets and enjoy the towns architecture and beauty.

14. Wheaton

Wheaton

Elmhurst is known as a fantastic place to receive a public liberal arts education.  Nearby Wheaton is known as a more conservative and traditional college town. Proud of its traditions and community covenant, the atmosphere here isn’t like your typical college town.  The community enjoys the Wheaton French Market that has a decidedly European feeling as opposed to Americana.

The civic pride is on full display during the Prairie Path Clean-up, when the entire town gathers to take care of a 61-mile stretch of highway through town. Free outdoor concerts, summer vintage car shows, and the Wine and Cultural Arts Festival, make Wheaton a small town cultural mecca.

15. Bartlett

Swaminarayan Temple in Bartlett

The area now known as the Village of Bartlett was once a settlement for Potawatomi, Ottawa, Miami, and Cherokee tribes.  Over the centuries, it’s also been claimed by the French, the English, and the Spanish. But it was a wealthy benefactor named Luther Bartlett who brought the railroad in and made modern day Bartlett what it is.

You can check out the 19th century Bartlett Depot Museum at the original railroad station.  Locals love baseball and the town has the distinction of having the largest Little League program in the country.

Chicago Northwest: The Ideal Weekend Excursion

From Local Experts

3 Days 56 Miles

Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Rolling Meadows, Roselle, Itasca

From the local experts at Meet Chicago Northwest

Whether you are visiting for a fun family weekend, a couple's retreat, or a friends getaway, the Chicago Northwest suburbs is a fantastic destination, bursting with exceptional restaurants, luxurious hotels, expansive outdoor adventures and warm Midwestern hospitality.

As you step inside the front doors of the  Hyatt Regency Schaumburg Chicago  you will be welcomed by the expansive lobby with plenty of seating areas to enjoy during your stay. Head over to check-in (hopefully you reserved one of the Hyatt’s Executive Suites!). On your way up, you’ll notice The Market for grab & go service and Gallagher’s Bar available for outside service. Your stay at the Hyatt is central to several walkable restaurants such as City Works Eatery & Pour House, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille (coming soon!), The Capital Grille and the Dining Pavilion at Woodfield Mall.

After an effortless check-in, swing over to  LEGOLAND Discovery Center . A perfect destination for children, or just general Lego lovers, LEGOLAND has something to offer to people of all ages. Try out The Great LEGO® Race VR Experience. With this virtual reality experience, you buckle up and ride inside the most incredible, exhilarating, and fun LEGO race ever created!

After working up an appetite, dine with style at  Chicago Prime Italian , a family-owned, high-quality Italian restaurant. Find your taste of Italy on their elegant menu and on weekends enjoy live entertainment on their beautiful outdoor patio. When looking for something fun to do in the Chicago Northwest region,  Topgolf  is always the top of the list. There's no pressure to have a good golf swing or score a lot of points. It's all about everyone having fun! Open year-round, Topgolf features dozens of climate-controlled hitting bays and has fantastic drink options! Round out the evening on the Hyatt’s Front Porch with their weekend music series.

Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Rolling Meadows, Roselle, Schaumburg

Be sure to get a good night's sleep, because  Busse Woods  is quite the hike. Sitting at just over 3,558-acres, the Ned Brown Preserve—popularly known as Busse Woods—is one of the largest and most diverse locations of the Cook County Forest Preserves. It contains ancient upland forests, nearly 13 miles of paved trail, 419 acres of water for fishing and boating, an elk pasture, and beautiful scenery.

Locals consider   Lynfred Winery   to be the historical anchor that keeps Roselle together. Founded by the father of the Illinois wine industry himself, Fred E. Koehler, Lynfred Winery is a Chicago Northwest staple. Boasting an extensive selection and variety, Lynfred Winery is the perfect destination to kick back and appreciate a quality glass of wine. There's also a tasting room and state-of-the-art production facility for all of Lynfred's varietals.

Arlington Alfresco   is an open-air dining and shopping zone in downtown Arlington Heights that enables restaurants, stores, and businesses to expand their capacity into designated zones within the Arlington Alfresco footprint. Boasting countless stores and shops, Arlington Alfresco is a must-visit destination. We recommend dining at   Hey Nonny , where American food pairs perfectly with great taste in music. With ticketed shows six nights a week, you can always count on this restaurant for a memorable and unique experience. Be sure to swing around the corner after your meal for an Instaworthy photo opp at Metropolis Performing Arts Centre’s new marquee.

Itasca & Schaumburg

If there is one thing the Chicago Northwest Region is known for, it's  Woodfield Mall . With more than 2 million square feet of retail shops, restaurants, and family-friendly amenities, Woodfield Mall is one of the largest shopping destinations in the United States! Peruse the many shops and stops that Woodfield has to offer — perhaps you'll walk out with something unique to remember your trip by.

Located in the peaceful town of Itasca,  Fox & Turtle  is a relaxed, upscale American pub that offers both carryout and patio dining options. They have a wide variety of salads, sliders, steaks, pasta, and diverse entrees. Just down the road is  Church Street Brewing Company , a family craft brewery created on the principle of serving traditional and unpretentious lagers and ales to local clientele. Church Street Brewing showcases European influenced beers along with a friendly, laid back environment. Since the brewery is in a warehouse, there's plenty of space for ping pong, darts, bags, and live music! At Church Street Brewing Company, expect quality beer, friendly service, and a fun atmosphere.

Sea Grant Illinois-Indiana Funding Opportunity

(Now Closed) $800,000 of Research Grants Available from the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program (IISG)

The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant College Program (IISG) anticipates having $800,000 to invest in promising research projects relevant to southern Lake Michigan and surrounding coastal communities in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. Work is to be completed in the 2024-25 biennium. Work can be conducted outside of the geographic area outlined above provided applicants make a compelling case for why their work is relevant to southern Lake Michigan and surrounding coastal communities.

Investigators from educational or research institutions including universities, museums, and NGOs, are eligible to serve as PI for these funds.  Priority will be given to Illinois- and Indiana-based researchers. Researchers from other states are welcome to apply but proposed work must demonstrate how it will benefit the mission of IISG and/or meet research priorities.

Projects should propose to answer a clear research question or set of related questions, and should demonstrate fit with the IISG strategic plan. Five areas are of special interest for the 2024-25 funding cycle:

  • Improving water safety, with a goal of reducing the number of drownings in Lake Michigan.
  • Adapting to changing lake levels in the southern Lake Michigan region in support of healthy coastal ecosystems and resilient communities and economies.
  • Better understanding contaminant levels in fish or shellfish that are or can be used for food. These may include Lake Michigan or tributary fish caught for subsistence fishing or Illinois- or Indiana-farm raised fish and shellfish. Contaminants to explore include but are not limited to legacy contaminants, contaminants of emerging concern, and toxic cyanobacteria from algal blooms (e.g., in nearshore regions; in ponds where fish or shellfish are raised).
  • Addressing environmental justice concerns associated with restoration of degraded southern Lake Michigan coastal sites (e.g., decommissioned power plants, industrial parks).
  • Exploring economic or legal barriers to production of Illinois- and/or Indiana-grown fish or shellfish (e.g., processing of organisms to be sold at restaurants, permitting or acquisition of resources to expand facilities, access to skilled laborers).

Additional topic areas of interest include broader aquaculture research, aquatic invasive species, community climate readiness, fisheries, healthy waters and pollution prevention, recreation and tourism, stormwater and green infrastructure, shoreline erosion, sustainable community planning, and water supply. All research projects should fit at least one of these topic areas.
