The Nothing but Love World Tour was Whitney's ninth and final concert tour. It was her first tour in over a decade and was used to promote her seventh studio album, 2009's "I Look to You".

Prior to Houston performing two dates in Russia in mid-December 2009, the official tour started on February 6, 2010 in Asia and also visited Australia and Europe. The tour was the 34th highest-earning of 2010, grossing over $36 million with 46 shows.

The tour was announced on October 12, 2009 on Houston's official website. By way of introduction, she stated:

“This is my first full tour since the My Love Is Your Love tour and I am so excited to be performing for my fans around the world after all this time. I am putting together a great show and cannot wait to perform the songs from my new album 'I Look To You', along with some of your favorites.”

The tour began with two rehearsal dates in Russia, under an unadvertised title. At the end of the rehearsal, the tour's title was changed to "Nothing But Love World Tour" with an "official" commencement in February 2010. Houston explained the meaning behind her tour's title is how she overcame her tough times. "I chose this title because what I had under any circumstance was love […] I wouldn't have overcome tough time without my mom and my daughter. My daughter is especially like a friend who supported me and stayed with me at the studio when I was working on the album."

On February 22, the opening night of the Australian leg of the tour suffered bad reviews from critics. Her performance in the Brisbane Entertainment Centre was poorly received, and some fans reportedly left. Houston's vocal condition was described as hoarse. Another action which came under fire from fans was when she paused from singing her song "I Will Always Love You" for many moments while she took a drink of water.

Houston's promoter commented that Houston smokes cigarettes and stated "It is what it is. She's comfortable with the show she's performing. She knows she's not hitting every note like she used to. But it's value for money; it's Whitney Houston warts and all." Houston received a similar response during her concert at the Forum Copenhagen. Some spectators stated the performance was not up to par on what they had expected; others stated that the singer is a legend, has been on the music scene for 25 years at the time, and considering what she had been through, the performance was fine. Having grossed over $36 million, the tour itself was a financial success; however, the promoter, Andrew McManus, lost $2 million bringing her to Australia.

Despite upsets from spectators, the tour received mixed to negative reviews from critics for the Australian and European legs of the tour.

Kathy McCabe (The Daily Telegraph) was not impressed with Houston's performance at the Acer Arena. She states, "Her acoustic set of old favourites unfortunately could not hide the very obvious problems with her voice, the strain and those coughs that punctuated the Brisbane show were back. By the time she got to the gospel section of the show a steady stream of disappointed, saddened and angry fans started streaming out the doors."

Cameron Adams (Herald Sun) gave Houston's performance at the Rod Laver Arena a positive review, despite media upset from her performance in Brisbane. He writes, "Houston is just a more human superstar in 2010, now with added flaws that give her character. She hits all the right notes in I Look to You, the new song about what she calls her 'down times'. Indeed every time she hits a huge note her devoted audience break into applause."

Candice Keller (The Advertiser) states that Houston still has "it" after viewing her performance at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. She continues to write, "She knows how to engage a crowd and keep the fans eating from the palm of her hand. She'll tease with a knowing and tuneful hum, or tell a story about what brought her to today."[39] Kim Dawson (Daily Star) found the performance at the LG Arena "forgettable" stating, Boos and jeers of: 'Where are you' filled the arena. When Whitney returned in a much wiser choice of black sparkly frock she said: 'I heard you got a little pissed off while I changed my clothes and dried off. But I'm here now.'

Morwenna Ferrier (The Observer) applauds Houston's concert at the Trent FM Arena Nottingham. She further writes, "She kicks off successfully with two ballads from her 2009 album, I Look to You, 'For the Lovers' and 'Nothin' But Love' (love really is a theme with Houston.) The crowd, now warmed up, begins rattling with joy as she struts around all finger-clicky, black and proud during 'It's Not Right'. The songs include moments of genuine bonkersness."

John Meagher (The Independent) praised Houston's backing vocalist and her brother, Gary Houston for the performance at The O2 in Dublin. He continues to write, "She spends more time chatting to the audience than singing in the early stages, although her conversation rarely strays beyond the 'I love you, Dublin' type. At one point she fixates on a young girl in the front row, but what initially is charming tries the patience of the audience and eventually becomes tedious. Even the more tolerable songs -- 'My Love is Your Love', for instance -- are carried by the strength of her backing vocalists and the enthusiastic singing of the crowd. There are slivers of the super-talented young Whitney -- a high note here, a spine-tingling pause there on 'I Will Always Love You' -- but they arrive so infrequently it hardly matters. Instead, you are left with the memory of her botched attempts to wring some magic from 'I Wanna Dance with Somebody' and 'How Will I Know?'"

John Aizlewood (Evening Standard) gave her performance at The O2 Arena one out of five stars, stating "Where once she soared, now she wheezes and croaks, bludgeoning her perfect pop single I Wanna Dance (With Somebody Who Loves Me) into karaoke submission; stripping the moving My Love Is Your Love of all emotion and inflicting grisly carnage on I Will Always Love You (if she is late-period Judy Garland, this is her Over The Rainbow)."

Fiona Shepherd (The Scotsman) gave the show at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre two out of four stars. She writes, "It was obvious from this performance that she has lost her vocal agility, her stamina, her poise and her wits – or so it seemed from her nervous laughter, repetitive thank yous and rambling personal tributes. Her band were practiced at covering for her while she took time out to pat away the sweat, re-apply her make-up, impart another nugget of eccentric insight and generally procrastinate."

Nothing but Love World Tour explained

The Nothing but Love World Tour was the ninth and final concert tour by American recording artist, Whitney Houston. [1] It was her first major tour in almost a decade and was used to promote her seventh studio album I Look to You released in 2009.

Prior to Houston performing two dates in Russia mid-December 2009, the official tour started on February 6, 2010 in Asia; also visiting Australia and Europe. The tour was the 34th highest-earning of 2010, grossing over $36 million with 48 to 50 shows performed. [2]

The tour was announced on October 12, 2009 on Houston's official website. [3] By way of introduction, she stated:

The tour began with two rehearsal dates in Russia, under an unadvertised title. [4] At the end of the rehearsal, the tour's title was changed to "Nothing But Love World Tour" with an "official" commencement in February 2010. Houston explained the meaning behind her tour's title is how she overcame her tough times. "I chose this title because what I had under any circumstance was love […] I wouldn't have overcome tough time without my mom and my daughter. My daughter is especially like a friend who supported me and stayed with me at the studio when I was working on the album." [5]

Public criticism

On February 22, the opening night of the Australian leg of the tour suffered negative reviews from critics. Another action which came under fire from fans was when she paused from singing her song "I Will Always Love You" for many moments while she took a drink of water. [7] [8]

Houston's promoter commented that Houston smokes cigarettes and stated "It is what it is. She's comfortable with the show she's performing. She knows she's not hitting every note like she used to. But it's value for money; it's Whitney Houston warts and all." [9] Houston received a similar response during her concert at the Forum Copenhagen . Some spectators stated the performance was not up to par on what they had expected; others stated that the singer is a legend, has been on the music scene for 25 years at the time, and considering what she had been through, the performance was fine. [10] Having grossed over $36 million, the tour itself was a financial success; however, the promoter, Andrew McManus , lost $2 million bringing her to Australia. [11]

The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour is a tacky reproduction of the singer's work: Review

The audience isn't here to be reduced to a hushed awe. They're here to sing and dance and recover the smiling, unpained vision of Whitney they have crystallized in their memories.

SHEFFIELD — In 2010, two years before her death, Whitney Houston took to the stage for the Nothing but Love World Tour, which served to promote her seventh album as well as the beginning of a general comeback. While the 38-city trek brought in $36 million in ticket sales, according to PollStar , it was still deemed a flop. Critics lambasted her for her hoarseness and fans departed as she coughed between and during songs. The world could only allow themselves a flawless and unharmed vision of Whitney.

At An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour, which opened here on Tuesday evening, that’s exactly what they got. Fans paid upwards of 93 dollars (and an optional 25 dollars extra for a show program) to see Houston projected onto a screen, courtesy of a military-grade digital laser, and the cutting-edge technology of VFX company Base Hologram, which recently treated Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly to a similar kind of resurrection. While those shows received middling sales, Whitney’s could be the company’s greatest success so far. “They understand how important it is to produce a phenomenal hologram,” Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and CEO of the Whitney E. Houston estate said of Base Hologram in a press release. “They also know that engaging her fans with an authentic Whitney experience would resonate worldwide because of the iconic status that she created over three decades.”

But the atmosphere and audience dynamic on a hologram tour is obviously different than one you’d usually find at a live show. The agonizing anticipation of a pre-curtain call — knowing that a huge presence is about to share the same space with you; wondering what they’re doing in their dressing room until then — is gone. In Houston’s case, particularly in the latter part of her career, that sense of anxiety before her live sets was heightened. As her voice threatened to strain, it felt like coming to see a once-confident tightrope walker who’d lost their balance. On this tour, there’s no chance of a fall, nor is there any relief in the not-falling. The focal point of danger has shifted; the onus is now on the technology. The audience isn’t here to be reduced to a hushed awe, they’re here to sing and dance and recover the smiling, unpained vision of Whitney they have crystallized in their memories.

When Houston’s hologram first showed up onstage at Sheffield City Hall, she looked golden, like a vision of a memory. Gone were any signs of age, wear, or deterioration. She opened with a cover of Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love,” the previously unreleased track that was sampled by Kygo for the producer’s 2019 hit single. But despite the hologram’s three-dimensional technology, this was a 2D duplicate of Whitney in every other sense. While Houston appeared in a few different costumes, and covered the hits from her debut (“How Will I Know?,” “Saving All My Love For You”) up to her movie days (“I Have Nothing”) in a doggerel, non-chronological order — one audience member told her to “get on with it” when the hologram assured it would cover the Bodyguard fanbase — this Whitney never aged past her straight-haired My Love Is Your Love era.

Though the show’s audio is lifted from previously digitally remastered recordings, Houston was accompanied by a live band and real backup dancers (as choreographed by Fatima Robinson, who previously worked with Whitney). But that only made the hologram seem more flat in comparison. Some clever tricks, including pouring rain and her toying around with the real-life microphone stand helped to temporarily suspend disbelief. Yet this could never be mistaken for a live Whitney Houston show. With tacky and outdated graphics — blue smoke, clouds, thunder, flames — the design and production value was more befitting of a cruise ship singer than one of the greatest performers of all time.

While the hologram has some of the visual cues of Houston — flailing her handkerchief around, tapping at her hips with a syncopated rhythm — it wasn’t as visibly possessed by her own music as she was. During her live shows, Whitney was enraptured. Her eyes were often closed as though she was in communion with God. None of that spiritual ecstasy was present during the Sheffield set. Meanwhile, scattered applause from the audience accompanied the end of each song, while one man jokingly screamed “Get off the stage!” to the unresponsive hologram just before her rendition of “I Will Always Love You.”

That’s not to say the audience didn’t love it, only that they intuited a new way to interact with something that couldn’t interact back. Of all the audience members I spoke to after the show, none of them had any serious criticisms. “I wanted to go up there and shake her hand. It was faultless,” said one. Another wished the hologram was “fatter,” adding that “surely she was never that skinny.”

In that way, An Evening with Whitney Houston is a successful misremembering of the late Grammy winner. The hologram projected a fantasy of a woman unmarred by fame, abuse, drugs, the pressure to uphold an unstable vision of perfection. It was everything we wanted Whitney to be, as we temporarily allowed ourselves to forget the consequences of such eulogistic thinking.

Unfortunately, the singer once praised for her exceptional vocal talent was still struggling with singing live Monday when she opened her “Nothing But Love” world tour in Australia.

Some Used to Dread Readings. Now They Sell Out.

These days, literary events in New York City can require tickets and be just as hard to get into as the hottest restaurant.

A woman wearing a white jacket stands in front of a seated audience, holding a booklet and a microphone.

By Kate Dwyer

When the writer and professor Amitava Kumar invited the book scout Erin Edmison to his reading at McNally Jackson Books’ Seaport location in February, Ms. Edmison penciled it into her calendar and “didn’t think twice about it,” she said, “because I am old, and that’s the way things used to work.”

On the night of the reading, she arrived at the bookstore to discover that she needed a $5 ticket to the event, which was sold out. “It didn’t even occur to me,” Ms. Edmison, 48, said.

She got in eventually. After a brief wait near the cash register with the other walk-ins, Ms. Edmison was able to stand in the back of the room. “It wasn’t a big deal,” she said. She was happy to see that Mr. Kumar , who is a friend, had a packed house.

In the New York of the recent past, readings were events one could wander into, perhaps as a recent college graduate aspiring to be a published writer or simply looking for something to do. But these days, McNally Jackson and a handful of other independent bookstores across the city have begun requiring people to buy tickets or R.S.V.P. to attend readings. Tickets can cost anywhere from a few bucks to some $30, depending on whether you buy the book, too, sometimes rolled into the price.

New Yorkers may have gotten used to the idea that nothing in the city is ever really free and that everything is hard to get into. Nonetheless, some have begun to wonder: What changed?

“Recently, attendance has been extremely up,” said Mikaela Dery, the director of programming at McNally Jackson, which has multiple locations around the city. “At least half of our events sell out. Often, we have weeks where every single event is sold out. And we have three or four events a week.”

The bookstore started its reservation system when it reopened as pandemic pandemic lockdowns eased — as the staff was careful not to overcrowd the room. But McNally Jackson, as well as other bookstores including Books Are Magic and the newer P&T Knitwear, adopted it as a long-term policy as a way to prevent no-shows.

Crowded rooms, though, are still a consideration. Readings — and not just at bookstores, but at bars, galleries and parties, too — seem to be more popular than ever.

On a Tuesday night in late March, the poet and essayist Hanif Abdurraqib drew 350 people for a 10 p.m. reading and Q. and A. at the Bell House, a performance venue in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, to promote his new book “There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension.” (The late-night event was added after an earlier 350-person reading with the critic Wesley Morris sold out in a matter of hours.)

But you don’t need to be a big name to fill a room. Over the years, less established writers have found large audiences at readings hosted by upstart magazines like The Drift and Cake Zine , which typically ask a few of their contributors to read in the earlier hours of their raucous parties.

Some of these readings cost money, too: Drift parties are free for subscribers, but otherwise tickets are $20 at the door and include the latest print issue. Cake Zine’s events were free until recently; at its issue party last summer, at Public Records, the space quickly reached its 500-person capacity, and people lined up down the block, said Aliza Abarbanel, a founding editor at the magazine. For the launch of the magazine’s winter issue, she and her co-editor, Tanya Bush, charged $15 for tickets.

Readings became a way “for people to ease back into social life” as Covid began to recede, said Whitney Mallett, the founder of The Whitney Review of New Writing, a biannual print magazine with shortform criticism and essays. And for a younger generation especially they can play a large role in social life.

“I’m sure kids still go to shows at Baby’s All Right and places like that,” Ms. Mallett said, though that Williamsburg concert hall has also hosted a few literary magazine parties recently. “Maybe readings have replaced that to some degree — it seems more contemporary. To go see someone’s indie rock band play doesn’t feel as of this era.”

It used to be that readings were a source of some grumbling, not because people couldn’t get in, but because they didn’t want to go. “You dread going to readings — they can be so boring,” the memoirist Priscilla Gilman, a child of literary New York , said. Lately, she noted, events have been more inventive, with things like food and cocktail pairings.

Bars like Pete’s Candy Store, Franklin Park and KGB have hosted readings for years. But chefs and restaurateurs have brought the events to new, upscale spaces, too. Tables of Contents, a reading series founded by the chef Evan Hanczor more than a decade ago, has become a mainstay on the literary event circuit and takes place each month at rotating venues such as the Ace Hotel in Brooklyn. The series’s upcoming 60-seat event — with dishes inspired by each reading — sold out within an hour of being announced, Mr. Hanczor said.

The fashion world has taken notice, too. Rachel Comey hosted a reading with The New York Review of Books last year. And in February, Ms. Mallett hosted a Whitney Review reading at the Comme des Garçons store in Chelsea.

Mr. Abdurraqib said he wanted to treat his book launch more like an “album release show or a concert,” and for it to feel for the audience “as though you’re settling into the end of a night hanging at your friend’s house, when a party kind of winds down and people aren’t leaving.” And in fact no one wanted to: The author signed books past midnight.

When literary events become trendy scenes, there are usually at least a few people who bemoan the loss of a seemingly bygone serious reading culture. (Some writers reading their work aloud are “not necessarily in it to publish books,” Ms. Mallett said, “or books are just another part of selling a persona — there’s a lot of social media stars.”)

But the landscape of readings in New York has always been varied, encapsulating both underground, D.I.Y.-ish performances and more professionalized gatherings.

The writer Lucy Sante remembered participating in poetry readings inside church basements and coffee houses as a high school student in the early 1970s. “When I was writing my first book, ‘Low Life,’ I tried out bits reading them at Mona’s bar on Avenue B,” Ms. Sante said.

Downtown bars like Sophie’s, Chumley’s and Phebe’s had reading series, as did CBGB, around the same time (on Sunday nights). There were also readings in art galleries, and “readings given under the auspices of downtown magazines like Between C&D,” Ms. Sante said, noting that Between C&D, which was on the Lower East Side, was “like two people operating out of their apartment,” similar to today’s indie publications run by twenty-somethings.

In a more cash-flush era of book publishing, in the 1980s and ’90s, releasing a book often involved parties uptown where authors would be feted at editors’ and agents’ apartments, Ms. Gilman, the memoirist, said. (Those gatherings did not usually include a reading.)

Today, most readings are not so ritzy, and what draws people to them is not the promise of a fancy cocktail or an hors d’oeuvre.

For many writers, they’re “an outlet to share this thing that might otherwise be seen as nerdy or a solitary pursuit,” said Leah Abrams, 25 who with a fellow writer, Heather Akumiah, 29, runs a series called Limousine Readings.

At a night of readings on Thursday in celebration of Cake Zine’s second anniversary, Ms. Abarbanel said a few people approached her to say they were inspired to go home and write immediately after the event.

“That’s probably the best feedback I could hear,” she said.
