Had a wonderful time in Alaska. A combination of the sights and sounds and what we saw as well as the CEO and other participants made it a great experience. A well balanced program with options to please all interests, it was a good time for all of us. Can't control the weather though, which would have made it a five star vacation. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Alaska Denali Expedition - 12 Days

Natalie and Dave go above and beyond to create the best experience possible! If you want luxury and pampering don’t do it! If you are prepared for simple but delicious food, sleeping in a sometimes wet or cold tent that you put up and take down, washing dishes and helping to load unload the bus, squatting in the brush/going days without a shower, and experiencing a variety of personalities, this will be the most memorable trip you ever take! The whole experience was amazing and certainly a bucket list adventure I wouldn’t have wanted to do any other way! Go with an open mind, a great attitude and you will laugh and gape in awe the whole way! I highly recommend!

Alaska Adventure - 20 Days

Words simply cannot express the magnitude of this trip! This tour has been the experience of a lifetime! Dave and Tory are exceptional human beings - deeply caring, passionate, always making sure we were all ok, always making adjustments, and with a great sense of humour. Dave’s food deserves a paragraph on its own - everything was delicious! We saw so much wildlife (sea otters are the cutest!), hiked, ice climbed, rafted, did scenic flights, had marshmallows around campfires, saw the Northern Lights, and made friends for life! I cannot thank you enough for this trip - I’ll never forget it!

Nature's Best: Alaska

We loved everything except the boat tour out of Seward. The seas were way too rough to go out. It was the final tour of the year on that boat. It should of been cancelled and refunded in full. We received $50 each back because the tour was shortened from 6 hours to 5 hours. I repeat again. Waste of time. I did not take a picture. People were throwing up (plenty of them). Did not see any whales. We were notified the day before that the seas could be rough. Globus should of taken the initiative and cancelled. Did not have a good time at all.

Spectacular Alaska!

The tour was fantastic. Alaska is big, and there was a lot of driving required. However, the tour included stops and videos to help pass the time. Great mix of activities.

Alaska: Ocean Wildlife to Interior Wilderness Adventure - 9 Days

Time flies when you're having fun. Me and my daughter had an excellent time on this trip. 11 days seems like a long time but with so much to do, it flew by. We were able to see parts of Alaska that few get the opportunity to see. There were plenty of wildlife encounters including the Brown Bears, Moose, Eagles, Caribou, fox, lynx, whales, and swans. Adam and Daniel were accommodating to be sure we got the full experience of what we wanted to do. The hotels and cabins were perfectly fine with no problems. The excursion started with us being picked up at the Anchorage Airport, settling into the hotel and a nice dinner overlooking the ship river. the next morning a drive down the Seward highway, a bush plane flight to Lake Clark Ntl Park to the Great Bear Lodge (great view of the volcano Mt Iliamna). Excursions to the beach to watch the brown bears dig clams, there are plenty of bears to see. After the flight out, it was 2 nights in Seward, we opted for deep sea fishing and caught 2 halibut, 4 rockfish each as well as breaching whales 100 yards from the boat. Next was a relaxing (napping) ferry ride to Val Dez. What happens in Val Dez, stays in Val Dez. The following morning was the drive to McCarthy where we toured the Kennicot mine and river rafted. Finally a drive to Denali and a bus tour through the park where we watched bear, moose, caribou, eagles and so on. Mt. Denali was shrouded in clouds so we did not see the peak this trip. This tour is great to be able to see the diverse areas of Alaska. If anything, I would have liked to spend another day in Seward, Val Dez, and Denali but there certainly are time restraints. We began our trip in Fairbanks for 3 days on our own, which is also a great area to visit. I would highly recommend this tour.

11 Day Alaska Interior Explorer Tour

Family Fun in Alaska First time to Alaska with the family - myself, my wife and our 3 kids. Super fun experience for everyone. A huge accolade to this company for the care put into the trip. We loved meeting travelers from all around the globe - we had a full group of 12 on this tour. Our "young adults" loved everything, especially the camping. This trip is definitely not a luxury experience - but way more fun than staying in fancy hotels! Setting up tents, cooking outside, hiking to glaciers, white water rafting in Denali, ice hiking in Kenniccott! Great explanation of the history - and great music in the van that went along with the places we visited. Mosquito bug net came in handy, and eye masks for sleeping - a plus! This was one of the last family trips before all the kids are all in college - so it was good to have the family all together and integrate them into traveling with others. Our guide, Charlie, did a great job at connecting with everyone, especially my boys. Thank you, Bindlestiff and Charlie, for this trip of a lifetime!

4 day Alaska Seward Camping Adventure from Anchorage

Amazing experience with Bindlestiff Tours! WOW - so much daylight! Especially in June!! We were a party of 4 - mom, dad and kids (teenage) traveling from Minnesota. This was our first trip to Alaska - and one of the first ""group"" trips we did in this style with the kids. We enjoyed integrating our kids into this way of travel, along with other travelers, in such a beautiful nature settings. It was really a hit - our kids LOVED the guide (Joe) - he was young (20's) and energetic and kept them entertained, and they loved helping with daily tasks around camp. About the tour - really inclusive and packs a big punch for 4 days! The daylight into midnight was really wild - we are happy we listened to the great packing list Bindlestiff provided (telling us to bring eye masks) - they really help! This tour company is awesome. They know what they are doing, and we always felt prepared from day 1 meeting the group and guide. Tons of sites on this tour - but our favorite was hiking to the Harding Icefield on day 1. We had good weather and had a clear shot of EXIT glacier - and even hiked in a little bit of snow! A big thank you to our guide and Bindlestiff for the organization and effort that goes into these trips. We are thinking about coming back next year for the 11-day Interior AK tour - it looks great!

The culture of Alaska is indelibly shaped by the environment. The harsh winter, connection to the Arctic Sea and permafrost means life in Alaska is not for the fainthearted. The remote and wild environment fosters both a spirit of independence and a strong community. When there are so few people in such a vast state, it makes sense to share resources and keep your friends close.

Nature-based hobbies like hiking, fishing and snow sports are all popular. The main city of Anchorage has a small but passionate arts scene including the well-curated Anchorage Museum and a number of Native arts and crafts galleries.

Around 18 per cent of Alaska’s population is indigenous, of either Alaskan Native or American Indian descent. Alaska’s Native people consist of dozens of nations and tribes including Aleut, Inupiat and Yupik people. While many indigenous Alaskans live in small rural communities, a growing number now live in urban areas like Anchorage. Climate change has proved particularly devastating for Alaska’s indigenous people and their traditional way of life. As rising temperatures change the landscape and affect animal migratory patterns, hunting and fishing have become more difficult.

History and government

It’s believed that humans first arrived in the area between 12,000 and 15,000 years ago after traveling from what is now known as Russian Siberia. This theory assumes that  Russia  and  North America  were once connected by a land bridge until rising sea levels caused the land between them to submerge and become the Bering Strait.

Pre-colonial

A detailed history of Alaska has been relatively difficult to uncover due to both the destructive nature of colonialism and the challenges the environment poses to researchers. It’s generally understood that most of the land’s inhabitants were somewhat nomadic until about 5000 years ago when evidence suggests some groups began to build permanent settlements.  

Colonization

Russian colonization of Alaska began in the early 18th century in pursuit of natural resources and to spread the gospel of Orthodox Christianity. Fur was of particular interest to Russia, and Alaskan Native people were often enslaved and forced to collect otter pelts for Russian companies. Brutal treatment, murder and disease killed an estimated 50 per cent of the pre-Russian population, despite the fact that very few Russians actually settled in the area permanently. 

Russia ‘sold’ Alaska to the  United States  in 1867. Indigenous Alaskans objected to the sale on the grounds that they had never given up the land to Russia in the first place, a fact that would become important in 20th-century legal stoushes. As part of the greater missionary goals of the United States, the systematic eradication of indigenous languages, culture and arts was practiced in Alaska – now a US territory – from the 1860s until the early 20th century.

The late 19th century saw the discovery of gold in  Canada’s  nearby Yukon Territory, known as the Klondike Gold Rush, which brought a wave of prospectors to Alaska because of its transport links to the Yukon. Gold was later discovered in Alaska itself and new cities, such as Fairbanks, were built to support the rush.

Alaska officially became a US state in 1959. In the late 1960s, the discovery of valuable oil reserves became entangled with the Native title movement, as a proposed oil pipeline would run through land that belonged to First Nations Alaskans. Richard Nixon signed the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act as a result of this tension, which granted over 44 million acres of Alaskan land to indigenous people, plus almost one billion dollars to be divided among numerous communities and groups. To this day, Alaska continues to be at the center of a battle between the conservation and exploitation of natural resources.

Geography and environment

Alaska is a massive state and its diverse and dramatic landscapes are a big draw for most tourists. It’s bordered by Canada to the south and a third of the state falls within the  Arctic  Circle.

There are rugged mountains throughout the state like the Brooks Range in the north, the highly volcanic Aleutian Range in the southwest, and the Alaska Range in the southcentral, which includes North America’s tallest peak in Denali (20,310 feet).

With over 6231 miles of coastline and a number of islands and inlets, plus a spiderweb of rivers that flow through the state, Alaska is as much a state of water as it is of mountains.

Eating and drinking

In keeping with a way of life that still revolves around hunting, fishing and nature, Alaskan cuisine is big on game, seafood and small amounts of locally grown produce. While traditional Alaskan fare tends to be simple, you’ll find a diverse selection of restaurants in larger towns. Fusion has been particularly popular of late, with plenty of chefs experimenting by marrying fresh Alaskan seafood with  Asian  spice and flavors. 

The food may not be the reason you’re holidaying in Alaska, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing worth sniffing out. Here’s our list of must-try dishes in Alaska:

Salmon Alaska’s wild salmon are iconic. An important part of indigenous diets pre-colonization, salmon today is both a vital part of the state’s economy and a source of pride and identity for locals. Of the five varieties – king, sockeye, coho, pink and keta – each person has their favorite and a preferred way of cooking it.

Reindeer hotdog These wieners aren’t just a novelty for tourists, they are plenty popular with locals too. Grab these strongly flavored sausages – actually a mix of lean caribou meat and pork or beef to bind it together – from food carts in bigger towns like Anchorage, or from supermarkets state-wide for a very Alaskan camp barbecue.

Berries Cold weather and a pristine environment make Alaska a haven for berry production. Late summer is best for blueberries and strawberries, while crowberries taste sweeter after they’ve been ‘burned’ with a little winter frost. While wild berry picking is a popular pastime in Alaska, remember that there are plenty of poisonous and lethal berries that grow in the state too, so be cautious.

Red king crab The king crab more than lives up to its name. It has a body the size of a dinner plate and the males weigh an average of three kilograms (6.6 pounds). You’ll see their spiky legs – which some say is the tastiest part – adorning menus throughout the state, often served with just a little lemon so the soft white meat can speak for itself.

Plant-based options

Vegetarians and vegans have no shortage of options in Anchorage, Alaska’s progressive hub. Vegetarians won’t have to look too hard for options in smaller towns like Homer and Seward either, though vegans may have to make do with fries and a salad. If you’re going truly wild and hitting the backcountry, it’s a good idea to stock up on food at the supermarket before you go. Many small lodges will have a small restaurant attached, but the offerings will likely be whatever the owners managed to bag on their most recent hunting or fishing trip.

Traveling with a local makes this all a lot easier. If you do travel with Intrepid, let your leader know your dietary requirements at the start of the trip and they can make sure you don’t go hungry.

Alaska is an outdoorsy state that’s big on experiences, so the best things to buy are activities. A glacier hike in Wrangell-St Elias or a marine safari on the  Kenai Peninsula  may not be cheap, but they’re sure worth saving for. If you do have some cash leftover, the best Alaskan gifts are still of the practical variety. Remember that it’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you can bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand have particularly strict quarantine laws.

Used by indigenous Alaskan women for thousands of years, this curved knife was perfect for tackling the many tasks associated with preparing freshly caught game and fish for dinner. Just remember to put it in your checked luggage.

Jams and preserves

Alaska’s famed berry harvest has led to a strong jam-making tradition. A jar of locally made preserve will travel well and makes a sweet gift in more ways than one.  

Qiviut items

Made from the underwool of musk oxen, qiviut is warmer and softer than wool and can be used to make everything from hats to sweaters. While some qiviut is produced on dedicated farms, it is possible to find collectives and cooperatives of indigenous craftspeople who still do things the old-fashioned way by picking the naturally shed wool from bushes in the spring and knitting it by hand.

Using weaving techniques perfected over thousands of years, craftspeople from the many different indigenous groups create baskets by hand. The Alutiiq people, for example, produce finely woven baskets (and all kinds of useful things) from the seagrass that grows in their ancestral homeland along the southcentral coast.

Festivals and events

The Alaskans may live, and thrive, in some pretty harsh conditions but that doesn't mean they don't know how to let their hair down.

Fur Rendezvous Festival

Affectionately called the ‘Rondy’, the Fur Rendezvous is a winter festival and celebration of all things Alaska. It takes place in Anchorage annually and the irreverent celebrations – which include dog sledding and a fur auction – began in 1935, when one local hero decided that surviving the winter would take one giant party. This 12-day festival is still one of the biggest events in Alaska, drawing folks from all over the state as well as the lower 48.

Alaskan wildlife

Part of the allure of an Alaskan adventure is the chance to see the diverse wildlife that roams the land and fills the waterways. With huge chunks of truly untamed wilderness, Alaska often has more in common with a safari than a walk through a nature reserve. You may just be lucky enough to see some of these:

A modern emblem of freedom in the US, the bald eagle has also traditionally been revered among numerous Native American groups. What’s so special about the bird? It’s a combination of size, speed and style. With females sporting a wingspan that can reach 240 centimeters (eight feet), a dive speed of up to 160 kilometers (99 miles) per hour and an iconic look, the baldie is bad to the bone.

See them:  Look up for a chance to see them in Denali National Park, Resurrection Bay and Anchorage, year-round.

Easily distinguished by their orange beaks, puffins in Alaska come in two varieties – tufted and horned. The tufted kind is all black with yellow feathers on either side of their head, while the horned ones have white bellies.

See them: Around Valdez, Homer and the waterways of Kenai Fjord National Park in summer. 

Grizzly   bears

These creatures are located throughout Alaska though they do tend to spread out, so spotting them is a rare treat. That being said, their impressive size makes them easy to see, even from a distance. Females can weigh up to 360 kilograms (800 pounds), but males really take the salmon-cake with top weights of 770 kilograms (1700 pounds).

See them: It’s possible to see grizzlies from March to September, depending on the area, but the peak time for viewing is generally June to July. The best spots are Kenai Fjords National Park, Denali National Park and Wrangell-St Elias National Park.

Black bears

It’s the face shape and nail length, rather than coat color, that will help you tell black bears from brown bears (like grizzlies). While they can be any color from black to brown, their longer, straighter face (some have called it Romanesque) and short claws make it relatively easy to tell the difference.

See them: Black bears, like grizzlies, hibernate during winter. The best times for spotting them are the warmer months from March to September when they hunt for fish in Kenai Fjords National Park and live in the forests of Denali National Park and Wrangell-St Elias National Park.

It’s the males that have the antlers, which they grow a fresh set of every year, giving new meaning to the phrase ‘grow a pair’. Male moose begin shedding the velvet coating on their antlers around September in preparation for dropping them in the winter months, a very gnarly process that is a real treat, albeit a gross one, to see in real life.    

See them :  Pretty much everywhere throughout the year, though the best spots are in Denali NP, Wrangell-St Elias NP and Anchorage.

You may know caribou by their more whimsical name – reindeer. Santa’s hoofed helpers have natural snowshoes and gorgeous, multi-pronged antlers adorn both males and females.

See them: There’s a fairly large herd that lives inside Denali National Park, and your best chance for catching these active animals is during the summer months.

Dall   sheep

These white sheep sport a wise expression and curved horns, though the males undeniably have a more impressive set. They have the distinct honor of being the northernmost wild sheep in the world and they will eat almost anything to survive, from grass and moss to soil.

See them: As they tend to live in rocky, mountainous areas, your best bet is near rugged environments. Be particularly alert on some of the hiking trails in Denali NP, like the Savage River Loop and the trails around Igloo Mountain.

Sea   otters

With a face that looks adorably stunned at all times, these beautiful weasels are playful and dextrous. Their amazing coats meant they were hunted to the brink of extinction by the 20th century and while numbers are improving, they remain a threatened species in Alaska.

See them: In the waterways around Valdez, Homer and Seward. 

Humpback whales

Humpbacks are big enough to be spotted from land, but there’s nothing quite like seeing one from the water by boat or kayak. Even the runts grow to around 12-metres (40-feet) long and a 10,000-strong pod heads to Alaska every summer.

See them: Resurrection Bay is a reliably great spot for whale watching in the summer months. You can also spot them in Prince William Sound and off the coast of Homer.

The ‘killer whale’ is technically part of the dolphin family. With their glossy black back and striking white bellies, there is little chance of missing these mammals if they are close by, and luckily for you, they tend to travel to Alaska’s waters in large pods.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to visit Alaska?

Stuck in a chilly latitude between 50 and 70 degrees north of the equator, Alaska is dark for a lot of the year. Really dark. The exception is from May to late June when the sun shines all day and most of the night. Peak season for Alaska tours is from mid-June to mid-August, when the daytime temperatures are a relatively warm 60–80°F and there’s plenty of daylight for exploring.

Shoulder seasons (April, May and September) are a good time to travel if you prefer to share the wild with fewer people, and May comes with very little rain. It’s generally best to holiday in Alaska with an open mind about the weather: Alaskans have learned that if they don’t like it, they need only wait five minutes.

How do I get to Alaska?

Perhaps fitting with its end-of-the-earth aesthetic, Alaska does have a reputation for being difficult when it comes to finding flights. Anchorage is the state’s main gateway, with flights coming in from other   US   cities like Chicago, Denver, LA, Vegas and Portland year-round. You can also find direct flights in the summer from   Frankfurt ,   Reykjavik   (how’s that for an epic itinerary) or   Vancouver . You can, of course, visit Alaska from anywhere, it’s just a question of stopovers and stamina.

If world-class mountain vistas are your thing you may prefer to drive. The Alaska Highway used to be a bumpy dirt road, but these days it’s a paved vein that pumps adventurers in through the border of   British Columbia . When you touch down and start your Alaska tour, we’ll handle all the internal transfers (in a private vehicle with heating).

Do I need a visa to travel to United States?

It depends on where you’re from. Many countries now operate under the United States Visa Waiver Program, meaning a visa isn’t required for stays of up to 90 days for travel purposes. There are 40 participating countries, including the United Kingdom , Australia , New Zealand, Germany and Spain.

If you're eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain a letter of authorization before you travel to the States. This can be obtained by submitting an application through the Electronic System for Travel Authorisation ( ESTA ).

If you’re a national from a non-participating country of the Visa Waiver Program, you must apply for a non-immigrant visa. Please see the Department of State website for more information.

If you have traveled to Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on or after 1 March 2011, you are ineligible and must apply for a non-immigrant visa instead.

People from a participating country who are also citizens of Cuba, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria or Sudan must also apply for a non-immigrant visa.

Is tipping customary in the US?

Tipping is very much a part of the culture in the United States. Tips are expected at restaurants, cafes and diners, as well as by taxi drivers, valet attendants, porters and hotel maids.

People working in the service industry generally receive low wages and therefore rely upon tips as a major source of income.

In general, leave 15 to 20% of the bill at places serving food and a few dollars to bartenders and hotel staff who provide a personal service like carrying bags or cleaning your room.

What is the internet access like in Alaska?

Internet access in urban areas of Alaska is usually good but download speeds will be slower than you are used to.

Internet access may not be available in rural areas and national parks.

We suggest talking the chance to unplug and immerse yourself in the wilderness, but remember to give your friends and family realistic expectations of how often you will be able to communicate with them.   

Can I use my cell phone in Alaska?

Cell phone coverage in Alaska is improving but still patchy. Expect to be able to use your cell phone in towns like Anchorage, Valdez and even in some parts of Denali National Park. Much of the state – including large parts of Wrangell-St Elias and the Kenai Peninsula – still has little or no coverage.

Global roaming can also be activated when traveling through Alaska, but be sure to check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur when using this option, as it can sometimes be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Alaska?

Western-style, flushable toilets are the norm in Alaska, though in remote areas and national parks there may be drop toilets outside the main building.

Can I drink the water in Alaska?

Drinking water from taps in Alaska is considered safe unless otherwise marked. For environmental reasons, try to use a refillable water bottle rather than buying bottled water.

What is the weather like in Alaska?

Weather in Alaska is highly variable depending on the region, so check out the guide below for the area/s you’re planning to travel in. Keep in mind that no matter your location or the time of year, the diverse environment and geography of Alaska means the weather can change very quickly.

Southcentral (Anchorage, Seward, Homer, Valdez)

A subarctic climate makes Alaska’s southcentral region cool to cold throughout the year. Even in high June, when the sun is out almost 19 hours a day, expect temperatures to top out at around 65°F and drop to around 50°F in the evening. August and September are the rainiest months of the year with an average of 14 days rainfall in both. In the winter months of December, January and February, expect temperatures to drop below freezing.

Interior (Fairbanks, Denali National Park)

The mountainous interior of Alaska is known for wild variations in temperature, though summers tend to feature average highs of about 70°F and average lows of 1°F in winter. May, June and July all experience over 18 hours a day of sunlight in Alaska’s interior. Summer (June, July and August) is the rainy season, experiencing between two and three inches a month on average.    

What should I wear in Alaska?

Don’t let the word ‘summer’ fool you into filling your suitcase with crop tops and short shorts. While Alaskan weather can be clear and beautiful in the warmer months, the nights still tend to be chilly and cool changes are known to come hard and fast.

The best way to dress for unpredictable weather is in layers. If you’re heading out for a day hike in Denali National Park, for example, think comfortable pants (preferably waterproof), a t-shirt and a lightweight waterproof jacket that can be tied around your shoulders and pulled on if it starts to rain, plus a bag packed with gloves and a beanie. 

Comfortable shoes are essential in Alaska. Most of the activities on our tours involve some level of physical activity, so we recommend worn-in hiking or walking shoes.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is Alaska a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Overall, Alaska is generally a safe destination for LBGTQIA+ travelers.

Same-sex relationships are legal, as is same-sex marriage. However, Alaska has no laws protecting LGBTQIA+ individuals from discrimination based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. While discrimination of employment and housing won’t affect LGBTQIA+ travelers, lack of legal protection can be indicative of higher levels of social bigotry.  

While Alaskans are known for being politically conservative, the majority of people follow a ‘live and let live’ philosophy with a heavy emphasis on freedom. Public attitudes towards LGBTQIA+ people are mixed.

If you identify as LGBTQIA+ and have any concerns about traveling in Alaska, we recommend contacting the   Alaska Pride Foundation , which is run by locals and provides support and information to LGBTQIA+ folks throughout the state.

In Anchorage you’ll find a handful of gay bars, including The Raven, which calls itself the northernmost gay bar in the USA. Outside of Alaska’s progressive capital, the queer scene isn’t particularly visible. Of course, in a vast state of disparate communities and low-population density, that’s not exactly surprising.     

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Travel Documents

Grand Alaska aboard Princess begins in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S., and ends in Vancouver, Canada.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey to enter Canada and for embarkation. Click here for more information on the U.S. Department of Customs and Border Patrol website. Passport Cards are not acceptable for air travel between Canada and the USA.

If you are a U.S. citizen, you do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation. If you are a frequent traveler to Canada from the U.S., you may benefit from the NEXUS program which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at certain airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada and of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation will be required. A passport is required for embarkation.

The White Pass & Yukon Route train excursion on day 11 from Skagway to British Columbia, Canada is a round trip journey that crosses the border into Canada but does not stop; therefore, there is no presentation of passports on this day.

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Deposits & Final Payment

The deposit and the fees for the optional Protection Plan or Cancel Fee Waiver [CFW] coverage are due at time of booking.

The deposit amount is $1,500 per person

Final Payment is due to Tauck  60  days before departure for lands trips, and  120  days before departure for cruises and rail journeys. If your deposit was made by credit card, final payment will be automatic unless you opted out at time of booking. Bookings without full payment at this time may be subject to cancellation without notice. Failure to make payment will be a considered a cancellation by the guest and all applicable cancellation fees will apply.

Tauck's Cruise & Event Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON and Tauck will  reduce the regular cancellation fees outlined herein, provided we are notified of cancellation before your cruise departs. Certain terms and restrictions apply (see below*).

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey. Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

• Trip Cancellation –  Should you cancel for covered reasons, the plan reimburses cancellation fees imposed, up to your total trip cost. 
• Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
• Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
• Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip. 
• Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.

Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Cruise Protection is  $699  per person.

This plan provides cancellation coverage for your trip and other insurance coverages that apply only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Cruise & Event Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included in initial payment. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your reservation. Cruise & Event Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit

Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees.

If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit

Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply for this tour.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Cruise Protection Plan:

120 days or more before departure: Loss of cost of Tauck's Cruise and Event Protection fee per person 119 – 60 days before departure: Loss of 25% of the cost of the cruise, not including air (if applicable), plus loss of Cruise and Event Protection fee, per person 59 – 1 days before departure: Loss of 50% of the cost of the cruise, not including air (if applicable), plus loss of Cruise and Event Protection fee, per person Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Cruise Protection Plan: 120 days or more before departure: $1500 per person 119 – 60 days before departure: Loss of 50% of the cost of cruise, not including air (if applicable), per person 59 - 1 days before departure: Loss of 100% of the cost of cruise, not including air (if applicable), per person Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

Tour Interruption Fees

If you have to interrupt your tour en route, you may be entitled to a refund for the unused land portion if it exceeds 24 hours; certain restrictions apply. Such refunds are based upon the number of overnights missed less a fee of $40 per person per day for unused transportation and other fixed expenses.

Partial Room Cancellation

A person who cancels or leaves a tour while a roommate remains constitutes a cancellation of one type of accommodation and rebooking of another type of accommodation. The price charged to the remaining person is the new, higher price for the new accommodation.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation and transfer terms outlined herein. Note: All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Cruise & Event Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

This itinerary is one of the more rigorous domestic itineraries we offer. To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. The adventurous journey includes several early morning starts, full-day excursions and many different modes of transportation, including airplane, railroad, cruise ship, boat tender, ferry, catamaran, jet boat, river raft and tram car.

There is a significant amount of walking in Denali National Park and other wilderness areas visited during your journey.

The Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge has two floors and no elevator. If you have difficulty walking, be sure to advise your Tauck Director at the beginning of the tour so that rooms close to the public areas can be requested when possible.

As this itinerary is designed for those who are interested in a faster-paced, adventure-filled experience, if you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

On board  Princess , smoking is not permitted in passenger state rooms or balconies. There are clearly marked "Designated Smoking Areas" available on board with a sufficient number of ashtrays which are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub and casino, as well as a portion of the open decks.

The medical center on the Princess ship is staffed by full-time British-registered doctors and nurses. In addition to daily office hours, they are available 24 hours a day in the event of an emergency. If you require medical services, charges for those services will be added to your shipboard account, and you will be provided with an itemized account to submit to your insurance company.

The Princess cruise ship is registered in Bermuda. Please check with your insurer to learn if coverage applies outside the United States, or purchase appropriate travel insurance. If you need to bring and use syringes or other medical equipment onboard, we request that you bring a sharps box and that you contact the shipboard medical infirmary for disposal instructions.

No vaccinations are currently required for travel to Alaska . For complete vaccination information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta. Although the assumption is that Alaska is a land of snow and sub-zero temperatures, the Alaskan climate is actually extremely varied, caused by the state's six different topographic regions. The far north is extremely dry and very cold, with Arctic conditions and temperatures average about -20 °F (-29 °C). Summer temperatures in the lowlands are surprisingly high, averaging in the 60's °F (16° C), and they have been known to reach 90 °F (32 °C), and up. The southeast tends to be fairly moderate, with damp, rainy and sometimes mild conditions, with temperatures in July averaging 56 °F (13 °C), and temperatures in January averaging 30 °F (-1 °C), and the south and central areas tend to be similar, with slightly colder winter temperatures. Western Alaska tends to be rainy, while the Aleutian Islands in winter are damp and rainy, with fog. Heavy snows are common in the north and central regions of the state.

What To Pack

The weather in Alaska is unpredictable. You will be visiting the warmer, dryer area of the interior and the cooler, wetter rainforest of the southeast coast. We suggest you pack clothing that can be layered for various weather conditions. Slacks, a sweater or fleece, a lightweight jacket and a rain coat are versatile clothes for touring, and comfortable "walking shoes" are a must!

We suggest that you dress for a cruise on the Princess ship the same way you would for any stylish land-based resort. Casual sportswear, including shorts, lightweight pants and jogging suits, is the order of the day. We recommend you bring a sweater, a jacket or an all-weather coat for cool evenings, and for shore excursions. Due to unpredictable weather, don't forget a hat or visor and a collapsible umbrella. You'll also want low-heeled, rubber-soled shoes for strolling on deck, as well as comfortable walking shoes or sandals to wear while on shore excursions.

There are two designations of evening wear aboard  Princess : Smart Casual and Formal.

Smart Casual Evenings:

Passengers dress as they would for a fine restaurant at home

Skirts/dresses, slacks, and sweaters for ladies

Pants and open-neck shirts for men

Formal Evenings: (one)

Evening gowns and cocktail dresses for ladies

Tie and jacket, or suits for men

In the dining room, items such as cutoff tee-shirts, shorts, halter tops, and jeans are not permitted and shoes must be worn at all times. Princess cruises require passengers to use cover-ups over bathing suits when entering the ship's public rooms.

Laundry and dry-cleaning services are available on board the Princess. Valet laundry is available at all hotels on this tour except for the McKinely Princess and Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge where you will find coin-operated facilities.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the cruise ship other than those prescribed and stocked by the ship's physician.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

• Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken in (very important!)
• Rain gear - rain coat and umbrella (very important!)
• Casual daytime wear – slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
• Jacket and tie for men 
• Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
• Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
• Fleece jacket or warm sweatshirt
• Warm hat, gloves and socks 
• Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
• Insect repellent
• Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
• Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
• Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
• Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
• Daypack for camera equipment
• Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
• Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your ship cabin while traveling

Experience a wonderful six day escorted tour including Fairbanks, a Riverboat cruise, the Alaska Pipeline, Denali National Park with Tundra Wilderness tour and Anchorage City which includes a visit to the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

Day 1 – Arrive Fairbanks

Fly into Fairbanks. Transfer via hotel courtesy shuttle and overnight in Fairbanks, the Heart of the Interior.

Day 2 – Fairbanks Sightseeing and Riverboat Cruise

Today learn how the gold rush affected Alaska’s interior on a sightseeing tour with an included visit to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Museum. Time is available for shopping, walking or dining on your own in the downtown area. This afternoon cruise on the Chena River aboard a sternwheeler and experience the thrill of river travel. Travel back to the time when traditional riverboats plied the waterways of Alaska’s interior during the late 1800’s. (Breakfast included)

Day 3 – Fairbanks to Denali National Park

Park through the Tanana River Valley. Travel through the river community of Nenana to learn about the Nenana Ice Classic, Alaska’s only legalized form of gambling.

Day 4 – Denali National Park

A continental breakfast is included at the hotel this morning.

Morning is free to explore Denali National Park

This morning the Tundra Wilderness tour will travel into Denali National Park along the Park Road. On tour, you may catch sight of Denali, North America’s highest mountain. Throughout your adventure, you’ll witness incredible scenery and enjoy a narrated history of the park road, keeping an eye out for animals that call this place home such as grizzly bear, moose, caribou, and Dall sheep. A small snack and beverage are included in the tour. Your Tour Director will inform you of the exact departure time.

Day 5 – Denali Park to Talkeetna to Anchorage

Board your luxury dome rail car for the trip from Denali to Talkeetna, a quaint historic village nestled at the confluence of three glacially fed rivers. The village’s name derives from the Athabaskan word for “river of plenty.” It is also the inspiration city for the community depicted in Northern Exposure, the television series.

In Talkeetna board a motorcoach for the journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage. Keep your eyes open for Alaska wildlife roaming the pristine landscape. Mountains, rivers, lakes, flora, and fauna make the trip scenic and enjoyable. The on-board guide will keep you informed of the local history and share tales of the north.

Upon arrival you are transferred to your hotel.

Tonight, share the favorite highlights of the trip with your fellow travelers as you join in a farewell dinner this evening.

Over three decades, the pan-like dredge extracted gold just outside downtown Fairbanks. Years after closing, it re-opened as a national historic district and is a popular attraction. You'll travel there aboard a replica narrow-gauge train whose conductor shares tales of the early prospectors. ALASKA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CENTER

Near the very end of the Turnagain Arm Waterway, along the scenic Seward Highway, this center provides a sanctuary for native Alaskan animals in need. Here you can get up close to the orphaned, injured or displaced animals, all under expert care in their natural habitats so that they can be reintroduced into the wild. The resident population varies by the season but can include caribou and moose calves, fawns, porcupines, birds, lynx, and brown and black bears.

ALYESKA AERIAL TRAM

Outside of a flightseeing tour, the Alyeska Aerial Tram in Girdwood delivers Alaska's best panoramic views in a matter of minutes. From the Alyeska Resort at the base of Mount Alyeska, you'll ascend 2,300 feet to the summit. From the tram, you can see for miles, with even more expansive vistas from the mountaintop observation deck. The panorama includes the seven hanging glaciers and the snow-capped peaks of the Chugach Mountains, the forested Chugach valley and out to the sparkling waters of the Turnagain Arm waterway. Be sure to look down, too, and you may see wildlife ambling across the mountain's slope.

Spring travel season is in full bloom for Alaskans looking to travel in state

Although the summertime cruise season officially started last week in Southeast Alaska, it’s a little early here on the Railbelt between Seward and Fairbanks. There’s still plenty of snow, and the tripod on the Nenana River is still standing tall.

Even so, spring specials are popping up all over for Alaskans who cannot wait to go exploring. Just be sure to bring your hat, some gloves and an extra jacket. Or two.

The sightseeing cruises in Seward started up last month. It’s always fun to sail in Resurrection Bay when the snow comes right down to the water. Watch for the critters on the shore and in the water, including the big gray whales and an occasional orca. Bring binoculars so you can see the otters and porpoises up close.

Kenai Fjords Tours offers cruises Thursday-Sunday, departing at noon. The four-hour Resurrection Bay cruises are available through May 16 for as little as $116 per adult. Kids under 12 years old sail free when accompanied by a paying adult (one free child per adult). Lunch is included (chicken burrito).

Major Marine Tours cruises seven days a week during the spring — and offers 25% off a hotel/cruise package through the end of April.

The cruise, which departs at 12:30 p.m. each day, costs $109 per adult. Hotel accommodations at the Harbor 360 are $169 per night, before the discount, port charges, fuel surcharge and local sales tax.

After everything is added on and the discount is applied, the cost for two adults to go on the cruise and stay overnight is $328.64, or $164.32 per person. I didn’t add up the cost for the kids, which is $54.50 per child (ages 2-11).

If you plan your cruise in May or early June (through June 15), Major Marine offers 20% off a hotel/cruise combo at the Gateway Hotel.

Overnight visitors have more time to see the Alaska SeaLife Center. Alaska residents typically can save about $5 off the cost of admission, from $25 to $30 per adult. Admission for kids who live here costs about $15. It’s important to book your tickets online, since the SeaLife Center offers staggered admission.

Alaska residents can trim 30% off the nightly rate at Alyeska Resort. Whether you’re going to ski or soak at the new Nordic Spa, the resort is well-situated. I plugged in some midweek dates to get the best rate: about $228 per room with the discount applied.

[ Here’s what I learned as a frequent flyer on my most recent trip ]

Up in Talkeetna, the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge sits on a bluff overlooking the runway and downtown Talkeetna. It’s got the best view of Denali for miles around. For a couple of years now, the lodge started opening in March for springtime travelers.

Between now and May 5, the lodge offers a 30% discount. Use the promo code “SPRING” when making reservations online at talkeetnalodge.com .

If you love the idea of cruising on the big ships, even when it’s a little chilly outside, there are some great spring rates departing Seward.

Nate Vallier with the Alaska Travel Desk in Juneau is a big cruise fan. He found some particularly good early-season specials, including:

1. Sail on the Norwegian Jewel on April 22 to Vancouver, B.C., in an inside cabin for $199 per person (based on double occupancy). In this case, the port taxes and fees cost more than the cruise: $301 per person. Still, $500 for a seven-day cruise through the Inside Passage is a good deal.

2. Get an outside cabin on the Jewel sailing on May 6 from Seward. The cost is a little more: $309 per person, plus $301 per person for taxes and fees, or $610 total per person, based on two people sharing a cabin.

3. If you want a balcony, Vallier recommends the Celebrity Summit, sailing from Seward on May 17. The cost is $399 per person, plus $383 in taxes and fees, or $782 per person, all in. Vallier picked this particular date because it’s much less than the other sailing dates on the Summit.

All of these cruises end in Vancouver, B.C. Travelers must have a passport. Travelers in May can fly back on Air Canada’s nonstop flight to Anchorage, starting on May 14. Early birds in April can fly via Seattle.

For a more intimate experience on a smaller ship, consider Alaskan Dream Cruises, which sails from Juneau and Sitka on seven- or eight-day itineraries through the Inside Passage.

Cruises between May 12 and June 14 are 49% off for Alaska residents, using the discount code “49FOR49″. You have to call for reservations, since the special prices are not listed on the website: 855-747-8100.
