UAE & Oman: Culture & Contrast in the Middle East

Mosques to markets & skyscrapers to sand dunes.

Welcome to the United Arab Emirates and Oman—neighboring countries of the eastern Arabian Peninsula where deeply rooted traditional culture and futuristic splendor exist in remarkable, sometimes surreal harmony. This tour starts with the opulence and bravado of Dubai, a city bent on having the biggest and best of everything, and then introduces you to the region’s more time-honored attractions, from the charming port city of Muscat to the brilliant night sky over Wahiba Sands. Along the way you’ll get to know the region’s gregarious people and have one-of-a-kind experiences—from sharing a meal with an expert in Emirati culture, to meeting a Bedouin family in the dunes of Oman, to exploring remote villages and forts in the Al Hajar Mountains.

Extend your adventure with an optional small group post-tour to the Dhofar Governate of Oman. The regional capital Salalah sits along the coast of the Arabian Sea with Dhofar Mountains rising behind. These mountains trap fog and drizzle during the summer monsoons, creating a unique microclimate.

Travels to: UAE , Oman

Touch down in Dubai and begin exploring this city of superlatives. Spend time in the Al Fahidi Historical District, home to Persian-inspired windcatchers. Enjoy lunch and learn from an expert on local culture at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Head across the Dubai Creek on an abra boat and stroll through the souqs on the opposite side. You’ll ascend to the observation deck of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Finally, a day trip to Sharjah, the UNESCO Cultural Capital of the Arab World, provides a deep dive into traditional culture on the Arabian Peninsula.

  • Cross the historic Dubai Creek in a local abra boat
  • Have lunch in the Al Fahidi Historical Neighborhood at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding, where locals share traditional food and provide insights into Emirati culture
  • Take the 2,717-foot elevator ride to the Burj Khalifa observation deck and then step out to spectacular 360-degree views
  • Explore the traditional gold, spice, and produce markets ( souqs ) of Dubai and Sharjah

Like Dubai, Abu Dhabi—the UAE’s capital—has transformed itself over the past half-century into a thriving, cosmopolitan city. Touring here includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, and the Qasr Al Watan Presidential Palace. You’ll refuel with a 24-carat-gold-sprinkled cappuccino at a luxurious hotel, the Emirates Palace. Heading out of the UAE and into Oman, stop off at the historic oasis city of Al Ain, home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

  • Enjoy the exceptional art of the Louvre Abu Dhabi, including pieces on loan from Paris’s Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou, as well as works from the museum’s own collection
  • Marvel at the striking mix of modern and traditional design at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in the UAE and the only one in Abu Dhabi open to non-Muslims
  • Drink a cappuccino sprinkled with 24-carat-gold dust at the luxurious Emirates Palace
  • Stroll the picturesque “Garden City” of Al Ain, a former caravan oasis and birthplace of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyan, whose palace is now a museum

Muscat, the capital of Oman, is a major port city that has long been a conduit between the Arabian Peninsula to the rest of the world. Less glitzy but more charming than Dubai, Muscat is known for its historic bazaars, traditional whitewashed architecture, and old-school Arabian hospitality. Among your stops here are the Mutrah Souq, the National Museum of Oman, and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Learn more about the role of women in modern Omani society at a local sewing cooperative. A drive along the water takes you to Wadi Tiwi, a deep gorge that’s among Oman’s most beautiful natural sights, and the coastal town of Sur, from where you’ll go on a turtle-watching expedition at Ras Al Jinz Reserve.

  • Take in the timeless Arabian vistas of old Muscat and the handicraft-filled Mutrah souq
  • Explore the history and heritage of Oman at the well-curated National Museum, with exhibits focusing on the country’s maritime history, currency, irrigation systems, Islam, and much more
  • Learn about the role of women in modern Omani society at the Sidab Women’s Sewing Cooperative
  • Drive past spectacular wadis (gorges) and pristine beaches en route to Sur
  • Watch sea turtles serenely emerge from the Arabian Sea to nest at the Ras al Jinz Reserve

Finish off the coastal section of the tour by watching traditional dhows being built in the Sur shipyard, followed by a visit to the Sur Maritime Museum. Then head inland for an exhilarating drive into Wahiba Sands, where you’ll meet Bedouins who call the desert home. The next day, travel into the Al Hajar Mountains to Jebel Akhdar, which means “Green Mountain” in Arabic. Take in spectacular views, meet locals, and hike through timeless villages.

  • See how traditional Omani dhows are constructed at Sur’s shipyard, and learn more about the maritime history of the area at a local museum
  • Chat with a Bedouin family and learn about their culture and traditions amidst the stark and boundless Wahiba Sand Dunes
  • Experiencing the vast beauty and limitless stars of the desert at night, while bedding down in a well-appointed, air-conditioned chalet
  • Hike between villages on the slopes of Jebel Akhdar in the Al Hajar Mountains, one of the most rugged and spectacular landscapes on the Arabian Peninsula

From Jebel Akhdar continue your exploration of Oman’s interior, settling in for two nights in Al Hamra, a date palm-studded village near history-rich Nizwa. This welcoming and traditional area is as dedicated to heritage as Dubai is to modernity. Explore forts and castles and wander the souq and livestock market in Nizwa. Eschewing the highway, return to Muscat by way of a scenic and very remote stretch of mountains, including some time on unpaved roads. Enjoy a final night in the city before departure the following morning.

  • Learn about the history of the Nizwa Imamate as you explore its historical capital
  • Wander the ramparts and corridors of the Ya’rubid Jibreen Castle, surrounded by date palms in the desert near Bahla and Nizwa
  • Marvel at the hustle and bustle of the souq and Friday livestock market in Nizwa
  • Get a taste of Oman before the oil boom on remote mountain backroads linking the Al Hamra with the capital Muscat

Activity Level

Level 3: Medium

This small group tour features long days walking and standing while touring, several long days of overland travel (some on poor quality roads), lengthy foot traverses of two border points while carrying/rolling your own luggage, unpaved sidewalks and streets, uneven surfaces and steps, absent handrails, significant stair-climbing, and absence of elevators. Only those fit to travel and who are willing to accept local standards of amenities and services, and the physical challenges, should consider joining this program.

Travelers must be able to walk at least two miles a day, keeping up with fellow travelers. A few drives on poor-quality roads may last as long as 8-10 hours driving time (with comfort stops). Some border crossings may require walking up to about a half-mile while managing your own baggage; and in some cases, bags may need to be carried during these crossings rather than rolled, as the road/sidewalk surface is not always paved or smooth.

There are overall shortcomings in the tourism infrastructure of these developing destinations, including some that can cause walking challenges such as unpaved sidewalks, uneven surfaces and steps, packed-dirt streets, broken pavement (streets or sidewalks), and a general absence of handrails or ramps. Some attractions are only accessible via steep staircases with tall uneven steps – these can also be spiral staircases and/or in narrow passages with limited light. Elevators are not available at touring sights, nor at a few of the hotels.

Past travelers have also encountered challenges with plumbing, bureaucratic service, variety of locally available foods, and availability and quality of public restrooms.

Accommodations vary from four and five star properties to relatively basic and simple hotels in the more remote cities.

Chicago, USA

Perfect Musandam tour, saw a pod of dolphins feeding, then two of them swam alongside us for a good 5 mins or so. Friendly and helpful crew, plenty of soft drinks, fruit and lunch (curry) on board. Stopped for a swim at Telegraph Island, they had towels for us to use too.

Such a lovely and comfortable Musandam trip, even worked really well with a baby and we saw many many dolphins. The one downside I guess is that I thought the snorkeling bit would be better, the water had poor visibility. However, overall quite a nice tour and the dolphins alone made it well worth it.

Adeel Qamar Mirza

I went first time to Musandam Oman and made a journey to Telegraph Island, did swimming and saw the fjords. It was a great journey with Gulf Musandam Tours. Would recommend everyone to visit this beautiful place.

It was an amazing whole day at the sea. The banana boat ride was fantastic! The blue water will make you jumped and swim!!! It’s a wonderful experienced with the gang!

Khasab Tour

The Musandam Khasab peninsula is renowned for its dramatic mountains, crystal-clear waters, and picturesque fjords. This peninsula is often called “Norway of Arabia” because it reminds me of the Norwegian fjords. Dolphins, turtles, whales, and colorful fish inhabit the area. Khasab tours from Dubai are the most convenient way to discover this hidden splendor of the Middle East.

Full-day Khasab Musandam Dhow cruise is an excellent opportunity  to enjoy dolphin watching and admiring scenes of the Musandam Fjords . The old-fashioned Dhow cruises of Khasab are a good choice for those who wish to see the majority of the sights of the region on a day cruise. With beautifully decorated Musandam Dhow cruises and traditional Omani culture, you’ll enjoy traditional and delicious Omani food, including vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

The Khasab Dhow cruise trip, unlike the Musandam Dibba tour, does NOT include activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, or a banana boat ride. You can book a SEPARATE snorkeling and scuba diving excursion or even go on a fishing boat tour if you are an adventurous tourist. Taking a separate snorkeling trip in Khasab will allow you to see the beautiful coral reef and swim if you like.

We also offer hiking and trekking activities in Musandam Khasab, so visitors can interact with guides to learn more about local culture.

History buffs should book a Khasab city tour as the guides are locals, so they can provide a fascinating narrative about the history of the ancient buildings and antiques in the area. You will also find out about the mysterious legends surrounding the sites.

Previously known as 'Oman and Etihad Rail Company', Hafeet Rail was unveiled on Tuesday, April 23, as the new brand identity of the joint venture company that will be running the railway. Here are some key facts you should know about the project.

What is the route for Hafeet Rail?

The railway track will extend for 303km from the port in Sohar city, Oman to the Al Wathba area in Abu Dhabi. It will be connected to the UAE National Rail Network and its stations across the country.

The Hafeet Rail extends from the existing Etihad Rail in the UAE .

Hafeet Rail - A scenic journey awaits

The route winds through diverse landscapes, moving from vast deserts to mountains and valleys, and running along Jebel Hafeet, the mountain that lends its name to the joint venture.

About Hafeet Rail

• Passenger Trains: Up to 200 km/h • Freight Trains: Up to 120 km/h

Passenger capacity - up to 400 passengers per train

Travel time reductions - Hafeet Rail will significantly cut travel times between major cities: • UAE to Oman via Abu Dhabi, Al Ain to Sohar – 1 hour and 40 minutes . The current travel time is three hours and 25 minutes. • Sohar to Al Ain - 47 minutes , compared to current travel times that can take one hour and 27 minutes.

DUBAI — Schools and businesses have been closed across the United Arab Emirates after the country experienced about year's worth of rain in one day.

The flooding also disrupted travel at Dubai International Airport, which is the world's busiest for international travel.

Videos posted online showed residents sweeping rainwater out of their homes and luxury cars stranded in Dubai's flooded streets, after a storm unleashed the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the country since the start of data collection 75 years ago. That was well before the country was founded.

Dubai's high-end stores weren't spared either, as rainwater gushed through the ceilings of shopping malls. At Dubai's main airport, the runway flooded and flagship carrier Emirates suspended all departing flights on Wednesday. The local Gulf News reported more than 1,200 flights were canceled due to Tuesday's storms. The airport is expected to return to fully operational by Friday.

The city, known for its year-round sunny weather and beaches, saw sunshine later in the week, but schools remained remote due to road closures.

Despite some damage to cars, homes and roads, the UAE's state news agency says the rainfall boosts the country's groundwater reserves.

Rainfall in nearby Oman is blamed for more than 20 deaths this week, including 10 children swept away in a car on their way home from school Monday, according to state-owned media there.

Hot Oceans Worsened Dubai’s Dramatic Flooding, Scientists Say

An international team of researchers found that heavy rains had intensified in the region, though they couldn’t say for sure how much climate change was responsible.

Scenes of flood-ravaged neighborhoods in one of the planet’s driest regions stunned the world this month. Heavy rains in the United Arab Emirates and Oman submerged cars, clogged highways and killed at least 21 people. Flights out of Dubai’s airport, a major global hub, were severely disrupted.

The downpours weren’t a total surprise — forecasters had anticipated the storms several days earlier and issued warnings. But they were certainly unusual.

Here’s what to know.

Heavy rain there is rare, but not unheard-of.

On average, the Arabian Peninsula receives a scant few inches of rain a year, although scientists have found that a sizable chunk of that precipitation falls in infrequent but severe bursts, not as periodic showers. These rains often come during El Niño conditions like the ones the world is experiencing now.

U.A.E. officials said the 24-hour rain total on April 16 was the country’s largest since records there began in 1949 . And parts of the nation had already experienced an earlier round of thunderstorms in March.

Oman, with its coastline on the Arabian Sea, is also vulnerable to tropical cyclones. Past storms there have brought torrential rain, powerful winds and mudslides, causing extensive damage.

Global warming is projected to intensify downpours.

Stronger storms are a key consequence of human-caused global warming. As the atmosphere gets hotter, it can hold more moisture, which can eventually make its way down to the earth as rain or snow.

But that doesn’t mean rainfall patterns are changing in precisely the same way across every part of the globe.

In their latest assessment of climate research , scientists convened by the United Nations found there wasn’t enough data to have firm conclusions about rainfall trends in the Arabian Peninsula and how climate change was affecting them. The researchers said, however, that if global warming were to be allowed to continue worsening in the coming decades, extreme downpours in the region would quite likely become more intense and more frequent.

Hot oceans are a big factor.

An international team of scientists has made a first attempt at estimating the extent to which climate change may have contributed to April’s storms. The researchers didn’t manage to pin down the connection precisely, though in their analysis, they did highlight one known driver of heavy rain in the region: above-normal ocean temperatures.

Large parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans have been hotter than usual recently, in part because of El Niño and other natural weather cycles, and in part because of human-induced warming .

When looking only at El Niño years, the scientists estimated that storm events as infrequent as this month’s delivered 10 percent to 40 percent more rain to the region than they would in a world that hadn’t been warmed by human activities. They cautioned, however, that these estimates were highly uncertain.

“Rainfall, in general, is getting more extreme,” said Mansour Almazroui, a climate scientist at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and one of the researchers who contributed to the analysis.

The analysis was conducted by scientists affiliated with World Weather Attribution, a research collaboration that studies extreme weather events shortly after they occur. Their findings about this month’s rains haven’t yet been peer reviewed, but are based on standardized methods .

The role of cloud seeding isn’t clear.

The U.A.E. has for decades worked to increase rainfall and boost water supplies by seeding clouds. Essentially, this involves shooting particles into clouds to encourage the moisture to gather into larger, heavier droplets, ones that are more likely to fall as rain or snow.

Cloud seeding and other rain-enhancement methods have been tried around the world, including in Australia, China, India, Israel, South Africa and the United States. Studies have found that these operations can, at best, affect precipitation modestly — enough to turn a downpour into a bigger downpour, but probably not a drizzle into a deluge.

Still, experts said pinning down how much seeding might have contributed to this month’s storms would require detailed study.

“In general, it is quite a challenge to assess the impact of seeding,” said Luca Delle Monache, a climate scientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. Dr. Delle Monache has been leading efforts to use artificial intelligence to improve the U.A.E.’s rain-enhancement program.

An official with the U.A.E.’s National Center of Meteorology, Omar Al Yazeedi, told news outlets that the agency didn’t conduct any seeding during the latest storms. His statements didn’t make clear, however, whether that was also true in the hours or days before.

Mr. Al Yazeedi didn’t respond to emailed questions from The New York Times, and Adel Kamal, a spokesman for the center, didn’t have further comment.

Cities in dry places just aren’t designed for floods.

Wherever it happens, flooding isn’t just a matter of how much rain comes down. It’s also about what happens to all that water once it’s on the ground — most critically, in the places people live.

Cities in arid regions often aren’t designed to drain very effectively. In these areas, paved surfaces block rain from seeping into the earth below, forcing it into drainage systems that can easily become overwhelmed.

One recent study of Sharjah , the capital of the third-largest emirate in the U.A.E., found that the city’s rapid growth over the past half-century had made it vulnerable to flooding at far lower levels of rain than before.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Arab Emirates tried to wring itself out Thursday after the heaviest recorded rainfall ever to hit the desert nation , with its main airport allowing more flights even as floodwater still covered portions of major highways and communities.

Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel , allowed global carriers on Thursday morning to again fly into Terminal 1 at the airfield. And long-haul carrier Emirates, crucial to East-West travel, began allowing local passengers to arrive at Terminal 3, their base of operations.

However, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said in an interview with The Associated Press that the airfield needed at least another 24 hours to resume operations close to its usual schedule. Meanwhile, one desert community in Dubai saw floodwaters continue to rise Thursday to as much as 1 meter (3 feet) as civil defense officials struggled to pump out the water.

“We were looking at the radar thinking, ‘Goodness, if this hits, then it’s going to be cataclysmic,’” Griffiths said of the storm. “And indeed it was.”

The airport ended up needing 22 tankers with vacuum pumps to get water off its grounds. Griffiths acknowledged that taxiways flooded during the rains, though the airport’s runways remained free of water to safely operate. Online videos of a FlyDubai flight landing with its reverse thrust spraying out water caught the world’s attention.

“It looks dramatic, but it actually isn’t that dramatic,” Griffiths said.

Emirates, whose operations had been struggling since the storm Tuesday, had stopped travelers flying out of the UAE from checking into their flights as they tried to move out connecting passengers. Pilots and flight crews also had a hard time reaching the airport given the water on roadways.

But on Thursday, Emirates lifted that order to allow customers into the airport. That saw some 2,000 people come into Terminal 3, again sparking long lines, Griffiths said.

Others who arrived at the airport described hourslong waits to get their baggage, with some just giving up to head home or to whatever hotel would have them.

The UAE, a hereditarily ruled, autocratic nation on the Arabian Peninsula, typically sees little rainfall in its arid desert climate. However, a massive storm forecasters had been warning about for days blew through the country’s seven sheikhdoms.

By the end of Tuesday, more than 142 millimeters (5.59 inches) of rainfall had soaked Dubai over 24 hours. An average year sees 94.7 millimeters (3.73 inches) of rain at Dubai International Airport. Other areas of the country saw even more precipitation.

Meanwhile, intense floods also have struck neighboring Oman in recent days. Authorities on Thursday raised the death toll from those storms to at least 21 killed.

The UAE’s drainage systems quickly became overwhelmed Tuesday, flooding out neighborhoods, business districts and even portions of the 12-lane Sheikh Zayed Road highway running through Dubai.

The state-run WAM news agency called the rain “a historic weather event” that surpassed “anything documented since the start of data collection in 1949.”

In a message to the nation late Wednesday, Emirati leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, said authorities would “quickly work on studying the condition of infrastructure throughout the UAE and to limit the damage caused.”

On Thursday, people waded through oil-slicked floodwater to reach cars earlier abandoned, checking to see if their engines still ran. Tanker trucks with vacuums began reaching some areas outside of Dubai’s downtown core for the first time as well. Schools remain closed until next week.

Authorities have offered no overall damage or injury information from the floods, which killed at least one person.

However, at least one community saw the effects of the rainfall only get worse Thursday. Mudon, a development by the state-owned Dubai Properties, saw flooding in one neighborhood reach as much as 1 meter. Civil defense workers tried to pump the water out, but it was a struggle as people waded through the floodwater.

Residents of Mudon, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity given the UAE’s strict laws governing speech, described putting together the equivalent of nearly $2,000 to get a tanker to the community Wednesday. They alleged the developers did nothing to help prior to that, even as they called and emailed. They also said a nearby sewage processing facility failed, bringing more water into their homes.

“A lot of people were in denial of how bad it was,” one homeowner said as civil defense officials waded through the water, bringing bottled water on a raft.

Dubai Holding, a state-owned company that has Dubai Properties as an arm, did not respond to questions. It’s part of a wider nexus that U.S. diplomats have called “Dubai Inc.” — all properties overseen by the city-state’s ruling family.

The flooding sparked speculation that the UAE’s aggressive campaign of cloud seeding — flying small planes through clouds dispersing chemicals aimed at getting rain to fall — may have contributed to the deluge. But experts said the storm systems that produced the rain were forecast well in advance and that cloud seeding alone would not have caused such flooding.

Scientists also say climate change is responsible for more intense and more frequent extreme storms, droughts, floods and wildfires around the world. Dubai hosted the United Nations’ COP28 climate talks just last year.

Abu Dhabi’s state-linked newspaper The National in an editorial Thursday described the heavy rains as a warning to countries in the wider Persian Gulf region to “climate-proof their futures.”

“The scale of this task is more daunting than it appears even at first glance, because such changes involve changing the urban environment of a region that for as long as it has been inhabited, has experienced little but heat and sand,” the newspaper said.

Heavy rains lash Middle East, disrupting flights in Dubai after killing 20 in region

Authorities and communities across the United Arab Emirates were clearing debris on Wednesday after heavy rain subsided late on Tuesday.

Dubai, the Middle East's financial centre, has been paralysed by torrential rain that has caused floods across the UAE and Bahrain, leaving 19 dead in Oman and at least one in the UAE.

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest air hub for international passengers, diverted scores of incoming flights amid the flooding. DBX was expecting more than 100 flight arrivals on Tuesday evening.

But the airport announced a halt to arrivals before announcing a "gradual resumption" more than two hours later.

Videos on social media showed planes taxiing across an apron flooded with standing water.

Departure flights remained in operation during the evening but were plagued with delays and cancellations. Roads to the airport were also badly flooded.

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Year's worth of rain in 24 hours

Flagship shopping centres Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding.

Water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.

Some roads collapsed, residential communities were hit by heavy flooding and many householders reported leaks from roofs, doors and windows.

Schools were shut across the UAE and were expected to remain closed on Wednesday, when further storms are forecast. Dubai's government also extended remote working for its employees into Wednesday.

Some inland areas of the UAE recorded more than 80 millimetres of rain over the 24 hours to 8am, approaching the annual average of about 100mm.

An SUV splashes through standing water on a road with the Burj Al Arab luxury hotel seen in the background in Dubai.

The National Center for Meteorology "urged residents to take all the precautions … and to stay away from areas of flooding and water accumulation".

The Asian Champions League football semifinal between the UAE's Al Ain and Saudi side Al Hilal, due to be hosted in Al Ain, was postponed for 24 hours because of the weather.

Climate-fuelled flooding

Bahrain, to the UAE's north-west, was also hit by heavy rain and flooding after being pummelled by thunder and lightning overnight.

"I like to play in the rain but for the first time it scares me," said nine-year-old Ali Hassan, as he helped his mother clear water from outside their house in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

The storms descended on the UAE, Bahrain and parts of Qatar after hitting Oman, where they caused deadly floods and left dozens stranded.

A child's body was recovered on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 18 with two people missing, emergency authorities told the official Oman News Agency.

Nine schoolchildren and three adults died when their vehicles were swept away in flash floods, the news agency reported on Sunday.

Both Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year's COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

Friederike Otto, a leader in the field of assessing the role of climate change on specific extreme weather events, said it was likely that global warming played a part in this week's rain.

"It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change," said Ms Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London.

At least 20 people are now known to have died in a wild storm that swept across The Gulf.

Parts of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw a year and half’s rainfall in one day.

Air travel remains in chaos, particularly in hard hit Dubai, with the emirate’s airport – the world’s second busiest air hub – declaring it was facing “very challenging conditions”.

Startling images have emerged from Dubai including of the immense rains and wind bringing down structures, sports cars driving through flooded roads and even the rescue of a cat that was clinging onto a car door on a water logged street.

At least 20 deaths

Oman, which neighbours the UAE, has recorded 19 deaths including a girl whose body was found in the city of Saham on the country’s Gulf coast.

In the UAE itself, a man in his seventies died when his vehicle was swept away in flash floods in the Ras al Khaimah emirate, north of Dubai.

Local news outlet The National said he was attempting to travel through a flooded waterway as heavy rain hit.

Worst rain for 75 years

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) said 255mm of rain came down in 24 hours near Al Ain, on the Oman border.

With the UAE averaging between 140mm and 200mm of rain each year, that amount far exceeds the annual usual total.

Cat rescued from floods

Dubai police did countless rescues on Tuesday but one was notable.

The force released a video to Twitter, now known as X, of officers spotting a black and white cat clinging to the handle on a car door on a flooded street.

The cat, with some protest and several growls, was brought onto a police boat and taken to safety.

Airport remains in chaos

Dubai International Airport, the home of Emirates and the world’s second busiest airport, is under particular pressure.

Over the last 24 hours it has diverted 21 flights to nearby Abu Dhabi Airport which is faring far better.

Other flights have seen severe delays with passengers unable to get to the airport or to leave it.

“We advise you NOT to come to the airport, unless absolutely necessary,” said the airport on social media.

“Flights continue to be delayed and diverted. We are working hard to recover operations as quickly as possible in very challenging conditions.”

Footage circulating on social media showed the airport completely flooded at times on Tuesday.

Emirates flight attendant seen trudging through flood water

Clips show the tarmac drowning in water as planes try to navigate their way through what now looks like a marina.

Footage of an Emirates plane at its gate could be seen completely surrounded by water.

Emirates suspended all check in for passengers until Wednesday morning to battle the backlog.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. Emirates is working hard to restore our scheduled operations, and our teams will provide all possible support to affected customers,” it said in a statement.

One video shared to Instagram by digital creator Jay Robert showed an Emirates flight attendant dragging her luggage through knee-high waters as the footage cuts to inside what appears to be the airport – also flooded.

“Proof nothing will stand between crew and sleep, Emirates crew wade flood waters in Dubai in efforts to get home after long flights,” the caption read.

“Several Emirates crew wrote in to say this is the worst flooding they’ve seen in the city in nearly 20 years.”

Similar scenes were repeated across Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE as the oil-rich Gulf state, better known for its arid climate and intense summer heat, reeled from the storm.

Both the Oman and the UAE, which hosted last year’s COP28 UN climate talks, have previously warned that global warming is likely to lead to more flooding.

“It is highly likely that the deadly and destructive rain in Oman and Dubai was made heavier by human-caused climate change,” Otto, of the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London, said.

Meanwhile, Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates both suffered flooding and water was ankle-deep in at least one Dubai Metro station, according to images posted on social media.
