Hiking Guide To Nethravathi Peak From Bangalore (INR 1779)

Spread the Word!

Mist-capped ridge lines ensconcing the peak make the hike to Nethravathi Peak a must. Crossing the multi-tiered Nethravathi waterfall and numerous small streams, hiking uphill onto open terrains with 360° views, and camouflaging yourself in the thickets of the Kudremukh National Park all while feasting on one-of-a-kind views, makes this one of the most rewarding journeys.

When we decided to hike the Nethravathi Peak, we did not find much information on Google. All it showed was group packages from Bangalore during weekends. For instance, we couldn’t find the starting place of the hike. So we decided to write this blog covering all the essential things you need to know to hike to the most beautiful Nethravathi Peak.

Nethravathi Hike Guide Contact

Due to the recent spike in the popularity of the hike, the locals and forest department have come together to assign guides in a circular fashion. You need not arrange for a guide in advance. Go to the hike starting point . The forest department will assign a guide for you.

How To Reach Nethravathi Peak From Bangalore?

There is only one unreserved direct train to reach Chikmagalur from Yeshwantpur junction, Bangalore on Fridays. From there, you are entirely dependent on roadways.

There are many state-run KSRTC and private buses from Bangalore to Chikmagalur. You can board a bus from the Chikmagalur bus stop to either Horanadu or Kalasa. From Kalasa, transit to another bus to reach Samse. There is no direct bus from Horanadu to Samse, you’ll have to change buses at Kalasa.

The Samse Circle is the starting point of the Nethravathi peak. From the Samse Circle, walk for about 2 Km by marking the map to the Nethravathi Trek parking point , from where the trek actually starts. You can also hire a jeep to reach the hike starting point. Auto or shared-auto drivers generally disagree with dropping you here as the path is a mix of road and muddy terrain.

Nethravathi peak hike starting place

Here is where you’ll find a forest official and a guide. Remember, until you reach this point you are on your own. Should you be confused or stumped on the way, we encourage you to ask for directions if needed.

You can find more on why we chose our accommodation at Horanadu below.

Network Availability

Along the trail, we were only able to find intermittent availability of Airtel and Jio with poor to moderate reception of the internet and cellular network. BSNL performed better in this region.

At the summit, all network operators offered good connectivity.

ATM Availability

No ATMs are available on this route. You can find reliable ATMs only in Kalasa and Samse. For guide and forest department entry, you’ll need cash. So, ensure to carry sufficient cash.

Languages Spoken

The regional language of Kannada is the only language spoken by the people in this region. Few guides are familiar with other languages.

Parking Availability

Park your vehicle in Samse and hire a jeep to arrive at the hike starting point . There is a limited parking space available yet it is best to park near the Samse circle. You’ll have to park your vehicles on the side of the road or in front of shops.

Restroom Facilities

No restroom is available at Samse. Come prepared as you will need to answer nature’s call with nature.

Best Time To Visit

Nethravathi peak ridge line

The Nethravathi fall that you encounter midway through the hike gushes with abundance during the monsoon months of July and August. Western ghats are worth hiking during the peak monsoon season, as it is bustling with spring energy.

The best time to visit Nethravathi Peak is during the post-monsoon months between September and December. At this ideal time, you get to see the majestic mountains in all their glory, in different shades of green, and with no obstruction from mist or bad climate.

We recommend going on weekdays as weekends as holidays are crowded.

Where To Eat?

There are restaurants and shops in Samse. You can buy energy bars and snacks before you start your hike from Samse.

Where To Stay?

There are numerous cozy homestays available in Samse that offer packages to hike Nethravathi Peak. The nearest homestay to the Nethravathi hike starting point is the Kalsanka Homestay (+91 9740360365 / +91 9900182092). They have dorm rooms with attached restrooms and tent stays for budget hikers, INR 1100 including 4 times food and refreshments.

We stayed in the Horanadu Devasthanam rooms as they were quite budget-friendly and cost about Rs. 250 per night for 2 people. We commuted from there by bus. If you are on a budget, we encourage you to do the same. Make sure to book in advance as weekends are usually crowded.

Things To Do In Nethravathi

Hiking the ever-green hill of Nethravathi is a popular activity in the region. People also do a short hike to the Netravati waterfalls located en route to the peak.

Registration: Prior registration or pre-online booking is required. You can register online from the official website .

Permission:

Since Nethravathi Peak is located in the Kudremukh National Park, permission is required to summit this peak.

Unlike the Kudremukh Peak Trek, the Nethravathi hiking route has no proper forest check-post office building. Forest officials can be found standing near the starting point of the hike collecting entry fees.

Timings: From 8 AM to 5 PM.

Duration: 3-4 hours for the ascend and 1:30 – 2 hours to descend.

Summit Height: 1520 m

Hike Distance: 16 Km one way approx.

Difficulty Level: Moderate – highly subjected to your fitness level.

Terrain: Grasslands, waterfall, valley, and stones.

Hiking Route:

Apply Dettol or any leech-repellent spray while you start as leeches are prevalent on this trail during monsoon seasons. For the first 2 Km, you’ll hike a forest trail frequented by humans. As you progress exploring this trail it feels almost as if the glory of the Kudremukh forest range cannot contain itself.

Nethravathi waterfall

After walking for a few more minutes, you will be within earshot of the thundering harmony of the waterfall. Step carefully on slippery stones, and the multi-tiered Nethravathi waterfall comes into full view. Crossing from here would lead you to a hiking path and subsequently to the viewpoint. You can rest for a while here, enjoy the waterfalls, and then resume your hike.

Nethravathi hiking trail and route

You’ll enjoy hiking in the abundantly green western ghats. The monsoon rains rejuvenate this entire experience. Crossing multiple small streams en route is evident in the forest trail of Nethravathi.

Stream crossing during monsoon

After a Km, the route is accompanied by the high screeches of insects and a huge stream that could be very easily mistaken for another waterfall. The stream is wide and powerful enough that bamboo stems were tied to 2 trees to aid the crossing of hikers. Be very mindful of your surroundings as the rocks are slippery and the water tide and flow are high during rains and monsoon season.

Fortunately, after crossing the stream, the leeches became less prevalent. It is a straight open uphill climb for 4 Kms, and trust us when we say, the view gets progressively beautiful with each step. The muddy terrain is slippery with dead leaves and water flowing to the very top.

Last summit push to Nethravathi peak

The last climb to the summit is slightly steep. Turn around and soak in the view from all directions. This is one of the few trails where stopping to soak in the sights happens to be very true. The last arduous push to the summit is truly rewarding. A pile of stones balanced atop the other marks the final summit.

The return is also the same route as you came through. So ensure you apply Dettol once more as you cross the river.

At The Nethravathi Summit:

At the Nethravathi peak

The green forest of Kudremukh National Park can be comprehensively admired from the peak. Spend as much time as you can to witness the beauty of this place.

View from the Nethravathi peak

Mist is accompanied by drizzles and crystal-clear views, this place of conundrums is guaranteed fun. We did enjoy every bit of nature’s drama.

The Travelling Slacker

Netravati Peak Trek: Serenity of the Shola

Finally, I did a trek in the Western Ghats ! After spending so much time in Bangalore on different occasions, I have finally managed to do a trek in the Ghats. Although I was not in my best shape, a few months in Bangalore had already taken its toll on my health, I almost reached the peak. Also, I did not do one of the more famous treks but I managed to do the Nethravathi Peak Trek is located somewhere in Chikmagalur area, in the same range as the more famous Kundremukh, but is lesser-known known and I have not seen any other account of this trek.

Samse Chikmagalur 7

One of the reasons I have never trekked in South India is that it lacks the carefreeness of the Himalayas. Most treks require some permission from authorities and information available is not detailed enough (Bangalore bloggers need to trek more). The closest I came to trekking in the Western Ghats was when I visited the Kas Plateau near Satara and walked along the highway giving up the bus… that was back in 2012.

Samse Chikmagalur 4

So, I contacted Vishwanath of Summiters, a trekking & adventure travel company, and he told me that he is taking a group to the Netravathi Trek and there is still a seat or two left. I opted in quickly and the trip started from Bangalore on a Friday night. Overnight bus rides are not something I enjoy as I can barely sleep and it leaves me sleepy for the next day. However, I had to do it this time. The bus slowly crossed towns like Hasan & Belur, to eventually leave the plains and enter hilly areas of Chikmagalur district. The first town we reached in the hills was Kalasa , a place I had heard of before, maybe because people pass through it for many other treks in this region. It was almost morning as we crossed this place and the roads also seemed to be a bit bumpy after this point.

We entered a stretch dominated by coffee and tea plantations and finally at around 6 AM, we reached our homestay in Samse, a small village right in the middle of a tea estate. Not sure about others but I at least fell asleep for an hour or so, before I was woken up for breakfast, which was a heavy, rice-based one necessary before a trek.

Samse Chikmagalur 2

The trek started at around 9 AM. We walked initially through tea gardens before taking a downward diversion till we reached the main village and I was immediately struck by a strange sense of Deja Vu. This neat village lined with betelnut trees looked too similar to some of those neat Khasi Villages such as Mawlynnong and Nongriat .

Nethravathy Trek

There was the hill on the left but on the right, I was seeing some excellent rice terraces. Some people will be reminded of SE Asia seeing these while I was reminded of Nagaland and Manipur.

Nethravathy Trek 18

After around an hour of walk along this road, which was actually motorable, we were suddenly told to abandon the road and hike upwards along a narrow trail. The upward hike lasted barely five minutes and then we started going downhill and quickly reached a small waterfall.

Netravathi Trek 2

After crossing the stream below the waterfall, we started upward hike again and very soon, the higher peaks made their appearance on the horizon. I was surprised by how similar they looked to the hillocks of Dzukou Valley and to some extent, even Shirui Hills , and even the trail here felt like the final stretch of Dzukou, with a straight path along the edge with clear view of the peaks in front of us.

Nethravathy Trek 3

This continued for a while till we reached another small stream and crossing it was a bit tricky. The rainy season was over already but the current was still strong and the stepping stones were slippery. Most people ended up slipping at least once and soaking their shoes.

Nethravathy Trek 8

After this crossing, suddenly we were staring at a steep green wall in front of us. It was the final stretch, a steep ascent to the Netravathi Peak! The trail was covered with long and thick grass, making the path rarely visible. It is also noteworthy that this is a new trail, frequented by very few people. This is why vegetation is rampant and the trail is faint. This is a classic Shola forest , exactly what I had imagined.

So, the next 30-40 minutes were spent gradually reaching the top and clicking the photographs. I actually gave up a few yards before the peak. The sleepless night was taking its toll. Apparently one can see Kundremukh and other major peaks of this region from the top. I simply clicked whatever I could and even I could see some peaks on the other side which no one could identify. But the best thing for me here was an endemic and seasonal purple blossoms dotting the grasslands. I don’t know the name of it. If someone knows, please drop a comment below.

Nethravathy Trek 12

Spent around an hour at this point. Some people went beyond the peak and tried to reach other peaks. Some others just relaxed and soaked in the view. Finally, we had our packed lunch and started our return hike. We were at the homestay by 4.30 PM and later that night, we enjoyed some good food.

Nethravathy Trek 13

The next morning we had a good breakfast of neer dosa and kadubu and started our return journey. But this was not before we stopped at a tea garden for buying local products and then at a place called Magundi for rafting on river Bhadra, although I did not participate in it. Nevertheless, the tea garden offered some of the most delightful frames and ended the trip on a satisfactory note. I think I will return next monsoon in this region, with more time in hand for slowly exploring the Western Ghats.

Nethravathi Peak Travel Guide

Where exactly is the netravati peak located.

  • Netravati Peak is a peak in the Chikmagalur District. As you know, the entire Western Ghat range spread over various parts of South India is a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its biodiversity and this area is a part of that too. It is not far from Kundremukha , a much more famous trek. However, this is a different route which is comparatively lesser known.

The Netravati River emerges from this range however, you don’t really come across that river during this trek.  I think the river emerges from the other side.

Attractions during Netravati Peak Trek?

You pass picturesque Waterfalls, streams, and Grasslands. You can view various peaks such as Kuduremukha, Gadayi Kallu, Attiberi, Kumbhala Khana, and Kallusanka once you reach the summit of the peak.

Can You Suggest a Tour Operator for this Trek?

I did it with and can recommend Vishwanath of Summiters Adventures for this trek.

Do we need permits for Netravathi Trek?

Well, this is a new development. There was no need for permits when I visited but now you have to get a permit and pay a fee. Yes, you need to pay the trekking permit fee. The fee and rules also keep fluctuating. The last I heard, it is INR 500 per person but that may change too anytime with notice. Apart from that, there has to be a mandatory local guide with any group that costs INR 1000 for a group of 10 members. Also, there are hefty camera fees. Your trek consultants like Summiters Adventures mentioned above can handle the formalities, and services, and get the permits for you.

Which is the trek Starting point?

The starting point is a small village called  Samse , located amidst tea plantations. While this is located in Chikmagalur district, you don’t really have to pass through the town of Chikmagalur (which is a popular hill station). The route from Bangalore generally passes through Hassan, Belur (known for the archaeological sites of  Halebidu & Belur ),  Kalasa, and finally to Samse.  From here reach a Place called  GaDi  3 Km. ( Border in the local dialect of Kannada Language  )

A steep uphill walk, on the muddy road about 3 km. Going by a local jeep to a point called Guthyadka top and further to Uppukallu by  4 * 4 Jeep is recommended for offroad travel, it saves time, and the local charge for it as per group size

Note – Don’t drive your vehicle or go on a bike, as it is not safe and make cause damage.

How to reach Samse?

From Bangalore, you should find overnight buses to Kalasa (310 KM/ 6-7 Hrs) which is a small town. Samse is around 10 KMs from Kalasa and you should find some local transport or buses from Kalasa. Of course, I was traveling with a group on a hired bus so I did not have to do any of that.

Also, in case you need to know, the nearest major train station is Hassan and from here you can find local buses to Kalasa and then reach Gadi ( The border ) en route Samse.

Accommodation for Nethravathi Peak?

Samse is the base for this trek as mentioned and we stayed in Maavina Kombe Homestay that was fixed by Summiters Adventures. They have their own homestays on a hilltop and midway or in-dome tent stay. Decide and Book your slot soon as it gets booked in advance. They provide Dome type tents/Carry mats/cozy blankets to get a feel of adventure for city-bred souls with authentic tasty  malenadu  cuisine at reasonable prices. However, I have seen small lodges in Kalasa town but will be a bit far and if you are going yourself, that can be the base for you.

How long is the Nethravathi Trek?

As per my estimates, from the homestay in Samse, we trekked for around 7 KMs till the peak one way and it took around 3 Hrs. The return took around 2.5 Hrs.

What is the maximum altitude?

Netravati Peak has an altitude of around 1500 meters.

What is the best season for Netravati Trek?

I did it on the last day of November and while it was still green, the landscape was beginning to dry up. On the other hand, during the peak rainy season (June-July-Aug), it may be difficult because you need to cross a couple of streams and during rains, they will flow at much higher levels. So, my best bet will be the post-monsoon season (September-October). Also, do note that leeches will always be there. I even got them in November. So, carry some salt.

I’m not sure how old this blog is and whether you find this. It seems there is forest permission fees and the flower name is Neelkurinji, which blooms once in 12 years.

Thanks. It was a few years ago… I got to know only recently. Will update the post.

Hello Trekkers!

Netravati is a stunning trek that falls in the Kudremukh range. Trekking to Netravati peak feels like a heaven on earth. It is a mesmerizing experience trekking through thick canopy of rain forest , encountering beautiful view points & passing through flowing streams and playing under gushing waterfalls.

Trekking to Netravati is little easier compared to it’s cousin Kudremukh. It’s about 12 km up and down when compared to Kudremukh which is 20+ km.

The initial part of the Netravati trek passes through dense forest  interspersed with flowing streams of crystal clear water. Crossing these streams is fun, with slippery rocks and chilling water wetting our shoes. This jungle is followed by green carpets of endless grasslands welcoming trekkers onto smooth hill slopes , one above another as if they are meticulously arranged by nature.

After a good night’s group fun activities at our homestay, we will visit extremely pretty Kodige waterfalls the next day.

Join Muddie Trails to experience the most beautiful side of Western Ghats in a relatively easier trek to Netravati Peak.

Highlights of Netravati Trek:

  • The rolling hills of Netravati range
  • Crossing streams enroute trek
  • Playing in the waterfalls
  • Western ghats at it’s very best during monsoons
  • Trip to beautiful Kodige Waterfalls

The trek to the waterfalls is a bit on the difficult side, as we have to go down a steep valley. This trek is different from other treks also in the way that it has no defined trek route. Amazing experience mostly.

Netravati Peak Trek, Chikmagalur

Netravathi peak trek, chikmagalur.

The Netravati Trek is a popular trek when it comes to the South Indian trekking circles. It is located in the Chikmagalur district between Samse and Beltangadi, at a distance of 330 km from Bangalore. Its named after the river Netravati which originates from the Bangrabalige Valley, Yelaneeru Ghat in Kudremukh.

There are many legendary narrations to the birth of the river Netravati. In one of the tales, it is believed that the Almighty who incarnated as Varaha Avatar in the Dasavatharam protected the land immersed in floods by raising it and relieved by this the ground in a state of bliss shed happy tears which is considered as the birth of Netravati. According to the localites of this place, the river was first discovered by the sages in the famous pilgrimage place Dharmasthala where they came to collect some holy water as the river flows through this place and is considered very sacred among the Indian rivers. Also the Bandaje falls here is formed by the tributary of the river Netravati.

This trek offers excellent views of rolling Shola grasslands on all sides and a bird’s eye view of the Beltangadi town. Netravati Peak is a lesser-known yet beautiful trek located in the Kudremukh Forest range, and the 12-km trek calls for a lot of adventure and excitement. The Netravathi trek has recently gained a good amount of recognition. The Netravati peak is 1250 metres high is a part of the Western Ghats range. The Netravati trek is nothing short of a paradise. The clouds seem to be playing hide and seek with the beautiful rolling hills. Hikers will get to see the Kudremukh Peak on the right and the Rani Jhari towards the left in case the clouds are clear. During monsoons, the shape and pattern of the clouds at Netravati keep changing almost very frequently. Netravati is probably one of the best places in Karnataka to exclusively view and enjoy the clouds. Hikers have to trek through the Shola forests that are filled with various species of flora and fauna. Along the way, one will encounter two water streams, numerous waterfalls(season-dependent), dense forests, vast grasslands, the melodious songs of the birds, and the bubbling streams that unfold before the eyes.

There are 3 main segments in the Netravati trail. The first segment emerges at the base and will traverse through two-tire waterfalls and a dense forest section until the sound of the river Netravati is heard. The first segment concludes here and in the second segment the hikers will follow the Netravati River to the grasslands leading to an open space. From here, the hikers will have to cross some false peaks and steep that brings about a feeling that they’ve already reached the Netravati peak, before they reach the actual peak. At this point, the entire panorama is breathtaking.

The best time for Netravati Peak trek is from June to February. During the monsoons, one can enjoy the abundant greenery of the Kudremukh region. During summer the trek offers clearer views when the landscape is a mixture of brown and green. Post-monsoon or winters are thus the best seasons for Netravati trekking.
