Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology
ISSN : 1757-9880
Article publication date: 25 June 2021
Issue publication date: 5 August 2021
Research on service innovation management of online travel agencies (OTAs) remains relatively scarce. This study aims to illuminate the detailed components of managing service innovations at OTAs.
Design/methodology/approach
An in-depth case study is conducted at Trip, the largest OTA in China. A coherent framework of managing service innovations at OTAs is proposed through refining an existing framework from new service development (NSD), and concerning the success factors of service innovation. Based on theoretical synthesis and empirical analysis, the NSD framework is adapted, restructured and refined for service innovation management at OTAs.
The proposed framework contains three facets and associated managerial elements: (1) resources, including stakeholders, technologies and systems; (2) contexts, including innovation strategy, structure and culture; and (3) ideation, including idea generation and idea application. Different success factors are attached to the managerial elements. The facets, managerial elements and success factors serve as the components in the framework.
Research limitations/implications
This study provides academia with an analytical framework to understand and interpret service innovation management at OTAs, which can be used as a point of departure for future research.
Practical implications
The analytical framework inspires OTA managers to adopt a structured approach in service innovation management, and policymakers to design related interventions.
Originality/value
This study offers a first step toward the investigation of service innovation management at OTAs, specifically in China. The proposed framework is potentially applicable to other industries.

The basic parameters of comparative tests of UO 2 fuel pellets produced by the technology of powder metallurgy for aftersinterability using their repeated thermal treatment (aftersintering) in different gas media, namely, with and without humidification, are presented. The results of an evaluation of the level of aftersinterability of these pellets by different procedures is presented, they are analyzed, and a substantiation of the expediency of using this operation manual for evaluating afersintering without the humidification of the gas medium developed at the OAO Machine Building Works (MSZ), Elektrostal’, Moscow oblast, is presented.

Russia Rounds Up Thousands of Migrants to Send to Ukraine War: Reports
Russian authorities rounded up thousands of suspected illegal migrants on New Year's Eve , and some outlets have reported many of the detained migrants were forced to enlist in the war against Ukraine.
The Kremlin-controlled news agency RIA Novosti reported that around 3,000 migrants were detained in St. Petersburg alone. The Kyiv Post said migrant-related raids also took place in Moscow, Chelyabinsk and other cities on New Year's Eve.
Following the start of Russian President Vladimir Putin 's war in Ukraine on February 2022, Russia has introduced multiple pieces of legislation that encourage migrants with Russian passports to serve in the military. One of the most notable examples of such legislation was a decree Putin signed in March that makes the path to citizenship easier for foreign nationals if they sign a one-year contract for military service during the war in Ukraine.
Russia has also been accused of forcing detained migrants to enlist in the military in the past. In August, police in St. Petersburg detained more than 100 people during a raid at a large food warehouse . Russian business news outlet RBC said law enforcement officers had enacted a new procedure that can be used in migration raids of bringing migrants who are now Russian citizens to an enlistment office.
The Kyiv Post wrote that reports emerged last year of similar raids on New Year's Eve. The outlet said the "roundups targeted those with recently acquired Russian citizenship who had failed to register for compulsory military service."
During this year's raids, one suspected illegal migrant detained in Moscow was dressed as Santa Claus, the Kyiv Post said the Russian online news outlet SOTA reported.
Newsweek reached out to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs via email on Wednesday for comment.
The Moscow Times cited reports from the local news websites Fontanka and Bumaga in its coverage of the recent New Year's migrant round-ups.
"Some of the migrants, who are predominantly from Central Asian countries, have been handed military summons on the spot, while others are forcibly taken to military enlistment offices, according to reports," The Moscow Times wrote.

Writing about the New Year's raids, Reuters noted that many migrants from neighboring Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia come to Russia seeking work.
During his annual press conference in December, Putin said there are more than 10 million labor migrants in Russia according to Reuters.
"This is not an easy problem," the Russian leader said.

Waupun prison staffers resigned or fired amid federal probe into alleged smuggling
Five prison employees have resigned or been fired since the U.S. Department of Justice launched a probe into a suspected smuggling conspiracy within Waupun Correctional Institution, according to the state Department of Corrections.
The federal investigation came at the request of Gov. Tony Evers and the state correctional agency after a DOC sweep of multiple housing units at Waupun last summer uncovered banned items, including cell phones, drugs and other contraband.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice worked with the governor's office and corrections officials in referring the matter to federal authorities, a department spokesperson said.
The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment this week on whether charges have been filed in the case.
As a result of the probe, the Department of Corrections placed 11 employees at Waupun on administrative leave — some with pay and some without — between May 2023 and March. As of this week, six employees remained on administrative leave. No information has been released about the type of positions the employees held at the prison.
No other staff members have been placed on administrative leave related to the probe, according to the agency.
The smuggling allegations came at a time when the state's correctional system was under fierce scrutiny from families of Waupun prisoners after a series of in-custody deaths and an extended locked-down period that lasted for nearly all of last year.
Dean Hoffmann , 60, died by suicide last June. His family has filed a lawsuit alleging prison staff were deliberately indifferent to Hoffmann's serious mental health needs. The lawsuit says prison workers failed to give him his bipolar and antidepressant medications as prescribed more than three-quarters of the time.
In October, 30-year-old Tyshun Lemons died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl. In March, Cameron Williams , 24, died of a rare stroke and fellow prisoners have accused prison workers of ignoring his pleas for help before his death.
The Department of Corrections also is facing a class action lawsuit , alleging “cruel and unusual” conditions at Waupun.
