Keep in mind that the TSA will be looking at the size/volume of the original packaging—so even if you only have a tiny bit of gel deodorant left, you won’t be able to bring it in your carry-on unless it’s in a package of less than 3.4 ounces (or 100 ml). The same applies to paste and cream deodorants.

The best way to avoid issues with bringing spray or gel deodorant in your carry-on is to simply pack travel-sized deodorants that are packaged with TSA rules in mind. And remember that you’ll need to place these containers in a resealable bag that’s no larger than one quart. “The total aggregate quantity per person cannot exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces). The capacity of each container must not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces).”

Considering how deodorants usually come in relatively small containers and the fact that you likely aren’t packing a 5-year supply means that this won’t apply to you.

Airline Restrictions for Deodorant

Whether your next flight is with United, Spirit, Southwest, Delta, American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, or any other airline, it doesn’t matter.

The same rules apply.

This means that spray, roll-on, gel, liquid, cream, and paste deodorant must not exceed 3.4 oz/100ml if packed in your carry-on.

Solid deodorants are not limited to the same restrictions.

Bringing Deodorant on International Flights

Again, it doesn’t matter if you’re flying domestically or internationally.

Worldwide, the same rules apply.

So, spray, roll-on, gel, liquid, cream, and paste deodorant must not exceed 3.4 oz/100ml in your carry-on, yet solid deodorants are fine.

How to Bring More Than 3.4 oz/100ml of Deodorant on a Plane

There are only two ways to bring more than 3.4 oz/100ml of spray, roll-on, gel, liquid, cream, or paste deodorant on a plane in your carry on bags.

• Obtain Prescription Deodorant

TSA allow larger amounts of medically necessary liquids and gels “ in reasonable quantities ”.

This can include deodorant if it has been prescribed.

The only thing to note is that a passenger must declare the item to TSA officers at the checkpoint for inspection.

• Buy Deodorant at the Duty-Free

Items bought at a duty-free store once you have passed through airport security do not have to stick to the 3-1-1 rule.

This is because these items qualify as STEB items (secure, tamper-evident bags purchased at the airport).

Buy Travel-Sized Deodorant for Air Travel

In our opinion, it’s a good idea to buy travel-sized items when flying, whether that be deodorant, toothpaste , hairspray or any other toiletries.

Travel-sized deodorant is readily available at many stores, and it gives you one less thing to think about when traveling.

As all the big brands make travel-sized deodorant, so you should have no problem finding your favorite brand.

Toiletries You Can’t Bring on a Plane

As long as you follow the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule, you can bring all of your toiletries on a plane in your carry on bags.

To reiterate, if the toiletry is a liquid, gel, or spray in a container that is less than or equal 3.4 oz/100ml, you will have no problem packing it in your carry on.

Some items can be confusing, though, which is what trips most people up.

The United States’ Transportation Security Administration ( TSA ) (along with other international aviation authorities) has established guidelines to ensure the safety of all passengers on board. 

Let’s explore the different types of deodorants and see how the rules apply to each.  

Liquid and gel restrictions 

The primary issue with deodorants is their form, whether liquid, aerosol, or gel. According to TSA regulations, passengers can carry liquids, gels, cream and aerosols in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in their carry-on bags. These containers must fit into a clear, quart-sized, resealable plastic bag. Each passenger is allowed only one such bag. 

Note: in case you still have concerns, contact your airline beforehand to ask about their policy on carrying deodorants and antiperspirants. 

Roll-on deodorants 

Roll-on deodorants come in a wide range of types and are typically available in liquid or gel form. Therefore, as above, they should be placed in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). 

Solid deodorants 

Solid deodorants, be they stick, powder or crystal variants, are designed to be applied in a dry form onto the skin. Thankfully, they are not subject to the same restrictions as liquid or gel-based variants. Solid deodorants are permitted in both carry-on and checked luggage without any size limitations. Therefore, passengers can freely pack their favorite solid deodorant without worrying about TSA regulations. 

Note: TSA nevertheless advises against carrying powdered deodorants exceeding 12 ounces in your carry-on, as this might necessitate additional screening during airport security checks.  

Gel or cream deodorants 

Gel or cream-based deodorants typically come in liquid or gel form. If you use a gel deodorant, you’ll need to ensure that it is in a container of 3.4 ounces or less and placed in a quart-sized plastic bag with other permitted liquid items. 

Aerosol and spray deodorants 

Aerosol deodorants, which come in spray form, are subject to the same rules as other liquids and gels, as mentioned above: they must be in containers of 3.4 ounces or less and be packed in a quart-sized plastic bag. 

Note: Certain airlines impose restrictions on specific types of aerosol sprays, whereas others have no limitations whatsoever, so please make sure to check with your specific airline.

Why might deodorant pose a security concern? 

Although you are allowed to carry deodorant (regulations permitting) while traveling, it’s essential to be aware that security measures can be strict. The rationale behind these guidelines is the potential risk of explosives being concealed within such products, potentially being used to smuggle dangerous items onto an airplane. 

So, when preparing for travel, it is prudent to be well-prepared for any security scrutiny. If you plan to carry deodorant in your luggage, it is advisable to adhere to the following recommendations and check the specific regulations of your airline: 

• Place the deodorant in a securely sealed container that is cool and kept away from light to prevent spoilage. 
• Ensure that you do not exceed the permitted quantity of liquid deodorants allowed in your hand luggage. 

Substitutes for carry-on deodorant 

Numerous alternatives to carry-on deodorant are available for you to bring onto your flight – for instance, body wash, shampoo, and antiperspirants. 

Exploring alternative approaches for carrying deodorant 

Let’s explore alternative strategies that can help you bring your deodorant on board without running into security-related hurdles. 

Obtain a medical authorization 

If your deodorant is prescribed by a doctor, you are permitted to carry larger quantities exceeding the standard 3.4 ounces. 

When you’re at the airport, ensure you have a copy of your prescription or a valid doctor’s note readily accessible. If you encounter a security check, present the note to a TSA official.  

Purchase deodorant just before your flight 

A commonly-used method is to buy your deodorant after successfully passing through the security checkpoint. This allows you to carry aerosol spray cans, gels, and any travel-sized liquids in your carry-on without undergoing additional screening. 

Opt for a travel-size deodorant 

To make air travel more convenient, many brands offer travel-sized deodorants that adhere to TSA guidelines. These mini-sized versions are perfect for carry-on bags, allowing passengers to stay fresh during their journey without worrying about security issues. 

By adopting these crafty methods, you can ensure a hassle-free experience at airport security while still keeping your travel essentials close. 

Understanding checked luggage rules 

For travelers who prefer larger deodorant containers or have liquids exceeding the carry-on restrictions, placing them in checked luggage is a useful option. In checked luggage, there are no specific size limits for deodorants, and they don’t need to be sealed in a plastic bag. 

Key points to take away 

• Liquid and g el r estrictions: TSA regulations stipulate that liquids, gels, creams, and aerosols can be carried in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less in your carry-on. These must fit within a quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag, with each passenger limited to one bag.

Can You Bring Deodorant on a Plane? (TSA Rules) [2024]

It’s always a good idea to keep deodorant on standby when traveling. This is especially the case when you are traveling through potentially warm environments like airport terminals, airplanes, and everywhere in-between.

The problem is that some types of deodorant are subject to special TSA rules and if you don’t know about those, you might have to throw out your deodorant. 

In this article, I will tell you everything you need to know about bringing deodorant on an airplane and the TSA rules that apply. I’ll also give you some tips for bringing other types of toiletries through TSA as well.

Can you bring deodorant on a plane?

Yes, you can bring certain types of deodorant on a plane but you want to take into consideration some TSA restrictions that I talk about in detail below before setting out on your travels.

Is your deodorant a liquid?

The biggest consideration is whether or not your deodorant will be classified as a liquid. If it is classified as a liquid, it will be subject to the TSA 3-1-1 liquids rule .

The rule limits you to containers of no larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 ml for your liquids. Keep in mind that TSA is only concerned with the size of the container and not how much material is inside.

So for example if you have a five ounce container with only one ounce of deodorant that is still not in compliance with the rule. Your container cannot be any larger than 3.4 ounces. 

You can bring along as many of these containers as can fit “comfortably” inside a quart size resealable bag. Typically, this will be a clear Ziploc bag and fitting “comfortably” just means that the bag is not bursting at the seams.

When you make your way through airport security, you will have to remove these containers from your carry-on luggage. (That’s why I always suggest for you to keep your liquids bag at the top of your backpack or carry-on bag for easy retrieval.) 

However, if you have a membership like TSA Pre-Check, then you can keep your bag in your luggage.

That program also allows you to access an expedited security lane and keep items on like your jacket, belt, and shoes. It definitely helps to expedite the security process and if you want to read more about that program click here .

It’s not just pure liquids that are subject to this rule either. Other types of liquid-like substances such as creams, pastes, and other types of gels are also subject to the 3-1-1 rule. 

The following types of deodorants will be subject to the liquids 3-1-1 rule:

• and Roll-On deodorants

So if you’re trying to bring in something like AXE Body Spray you’ll need to keep these limited to the very small containers that can fit inside of the clear plastic bag. Of course, you can always store these in your checked baggage where they won’t be subject to the same size requirements. 

Be careful because many spray on deodorants come in a standard 3.8 ounce or similar size which would be in violation of the liquids rule.

Solid deodorant

If you are bringing stick deodorant then you can bring in any size deodorant. Many popular brands make stick deodorants including: Old Spice, Right Guard, Gillette, Degree, Suave, Speed Stick, and Secret.

Also, if your deodorant consists of powders or crystals you should be able to bring in any size as well. 

Other toiletry items

Since you are asking about deodorant, you might also be wondering about other toiletry items that are commonly brought when traveling.

It’s actually pretty easy to figure out how TSA will view your items. If the objects are not 100% solid then they will likely be considered a liquid.

So again if you have items that consist of gels, creams, pastes, etc., those are going to be considered liquids. This means things like toothpaste , shaving cream, hair gel , mouthwash, sunscreen , etc., are all subject to the 3-1-1 rule. 

Solid chapstick/lip balm is not subject to the liquids rule. If you have the little containers that are full of gels like Carmex then in those cases those could be subject to the liquids rule.

However, I have brought Carmex through airports many times and never been required to put it in a liquids bag — perhaps because the containers are so small.

Also, anything that comes in an aerosol can is also subject to this rule. So if you are also traveling with things like hairspray that would be subject to the 3-1-1 rule. 

If you’re wondering about things like nail clippers, disposable razors, tweezers, and scissors, those should be fine as long as they are under 4 inches. ( Any sharp objects in checked baggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and inspectors.)

And when it comes to make-up, many of your liquid items will be subject to the 3-1-1 rule as well.

Overall, it’s not that difficult to figure out what is accepted through TSA. Basically, if what you were trying to bring is not in a purely solid form chances are it will be considered a liquid. And in that case it will be subject to the 3-1-1 rule. So be prepared to comply with that rule and you will have nothing to worry about.

If you’re getting ready to travel, you may have asked yourself: can I bring deodorant on a plane?

When you’re out traveling, you want to smell good and feel comfortable! Well, you’re in luck!

You are allowed to bring stick deodorant, crystal deodorant, and powder deodorant on a plane. Any quantity is allowed. For spray and liquid deodorant, you can only bring 3.4 ounces per 100 mL on a plane. Place them in a quart-size bag to make it through TSA security with no problems.

If your deodorant is medically necessary, you can bring more than 3.4 ounces on a plane. But it may be subject to additional screening.

This exception is typically for liquid medication, not deodorant. As you might expect, not many forms of deodorant are medically necessary. But it doesn’t hurt to ask the TSA agent. In fact, it’s encouraged. That way you don’t run into problems when they find out your deodorant wasn’t screened thoroughly.

Make sure you pack your deodorant in a clear bag so screening goes smoothly.

Stick deodorant

Stick deodorant is solid and it’s not considered dangerous or flammable. So it has no restrictions. You can bring any quantity of stick deodorant on a plane. It’s also allowed in checked luggage. I don’t recommend packing your stick deodorant in checked luggage though. If it gets too warm, it will melt.

You could tuck it under some jeans or another item in your bag that doesn’t conduct heat quickly.

Make sure to put your stick deodorant in a Ziploc bag before packing it in your suitcase or carry-on.

Crystal and powder deodorant

Crystal and powder deodorants, like stick deodorants, are solids. You can bring any quantity of crystal or powder deodorant on a plane, according to the TSA. It’s allowed both on a plane and in your checked baggage.

Are you wondering what crystal deodorant is? It’s made of minerals that stunt the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Unlike traditional stick deodorant, crystal deodorant doesn’t stop you from sweating. But it’s great at tackling body odor!

Powder deodorant, as the name suggests, is powder. You apply this powder to your underarms and other areas with body odor and it will help you smell great!

Spray deodorant

Spray deodorant has different restrictions than stick, powder, or crystal deodorant. Since it’s not a solid, spray deodorant is subject to the TSA’s 3:1:1 liquid rule.

The TSA allows 3.4 ounces of any liquid per 100 mL. It must fit in one quart-size bag. Spray deodorants are aerosols so they have some alcohol. This makes them highly flammable so they are not allowed to carry on a plane.

If you want to travel with spray deodorant, pack it in your checked luggage.

How To Pack Deodorant

Pack your deodorant in a clear plastic bag, whether in checked baggage or your carry-on bag. This makes security screening quick and easy. It also prevents spills or leaks in transit.

Gel deodorants expand at high altitudes, so be careful when traveling with them. Like with other deodorants, make sure to store it in a sealed Ziploc bag so it doesn’t leak onto the other items in your luggage.

Will aerosol cans explode in checked luggage?

No, aerosol cans typically will not explode in checked luggage. The cans are pressurized so if they are punctured, they could explode. Or if the pressure inside the can builds too much, it can explode. But this happens rarely. Aircraft cabins are pressurized and temperature regulated so the risk is pretty low.

When packing aerosol deodorant in your checked luggage, make sure the trigger is protected. The TSA wants to eliminate the risk of accidental release which can cause a fire.

Can I bring deodorant in my checked luggage?

You can bring stick, crystal, and powder deodorant in checked luggage. But spray deodorant has stricter restrictions.

In total, you can bring up to 2 kg (70 ounces) or 2 L (68 fluid ounces) of aerosols in your checked luggage. Each container must weigh less than 18 ounces or 500 mL (17 fluid ounces).

These totals are for all aerosols in your checked luggage, not just the spray deodorant.

Does deodorant count as a liquid?

Spray deodorant or liquid deodorant counts as a liquid. It follows the TSA’s 3:1:1 liquids rule. So you can bring 3.4 ounces or 100 mL or less on a plane.

Does deodorant go in a liquids bag?

Pack your deodorant in a clear plastic bag to ensure the screening process goes smoothly. You want to keep things moving and not cause trouble for the TSA agents, if possible.

If you’re stopped at the security checkpoint…

Give your deodorant to someone not traveling..

If you made it all the way to the security checkpoint with restricted deodorant, give it to someone who’s not traveling. Of course, that doesn’t solve the problem of having deodorant when you arrive at your destination. But it’s better than throwing it away!

Buy some deodorant at your destination.

You can leave your deodorant at the airport and buy more at your destination. This way you don’t have to worry about packing it correctly to make it through screening.

If your deodorant is medically necessary, explain that to the TSA agent.

The TSA will accommodate people with medically necessary items. You are allowed to bring more than 3.4 ounces of medically necessary liquids, but they may require additional screening.

Buy a travel-size deodorant after passing the security checkpoint.

You might be able to find a small store after your security checkpoint that sells travel-size deodorant. As long as it’s less than 3.4 ounces, it’s fair game.

Ship the deodorant (and any other toiletries) to your destination.

This is a great option if you have quite a few toiletries you want to ship. I don’t recommend it if you’re just looking to travel with deodorant. But, the decision is yours!

Is "all-body" deodorant necessary? Dermatologists weigh in on latest product trend.

You may have seen it in the drugstore deodorant aisle or in ads populating your social media feeds — a new type of deodorant that goes beyond your armpits and is meant for your whole body. The list of brands capitalizing on the trend keeps growing and already includes Lume, Secret, Dove, Old Spice and Native. Ads claim the products can be used from " head to toe " and even from " pits to bits ."

But should you reach for all-body deodorants? 

"It's not necessary at all," says Dr. Karan Lal , a double board certified dermatologist and member of the Society for Pediatric Dermatology, based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dr. Afton Cobb , a dermatologist with Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery in Jackson, Wyoming, says she doesn't recommend using deodorants all over your body. Instead, if you have any areas outside your armpits you want to target, you can try — with caution, she advises.

"That's a little bit more appropriate than just like all over the body," she says, acknowledging people may want a deodorant for feet or groin, for example. "I don't agree with just like spraying a deodorant all over your entire body. But in those specific areas, I think there is some merit."

Dr. Samer Jaber , a board-certified dermatologist at Washington Square Dermatology, in New York, agrees there is "certainly no need to use deodorants in areas where you don't have odor," explaining that deodorants are basically perfumes that are sprayed on the body to mask body odor.

In statements to CBS News, Dove and Secret said they saw a demand for a full-body product.

"While some may view whole body deodorants as unnecessary, we at Dove know there is demand for this product. Unilever research found that 15% of Americans were looking for a full-body solution," said Pranav Chandan, U.S. head of deodorants at Unilever. "Our research found that less than 1% of the sweat that our bodies produce comes from the underarm, so why not create a solution designed for use on all the other body parts that produce sweat?"

"We asked nearly 4000 people about their body odor and we found that: 50-60% of people are concerned about groin odor, 20-30% are concerned about chest or underbreast odor and 30-50% of people are concerned about foot odor," said Dr. Maiysha Jones, principal scientist for North America personal care at Procter & Gamble. "Secret Whole Body Deodorant consulted with hundreds of gynecologists and dermatologists to review our formulas and safety research, and we learned that 4 out of 5 of each specialty would recommend whole body deodorant."

CBS News has also reached out to Lume, which offers a range of whole-body deodorants, for comment. 

Is whole-body deodorant safe?

Dermatologists said to be aware of a few things when it comes to these products — first, fragrance. 

"Generally deodorants are very safe," Jaber says. "The biggest issue potentially with deodorants is, if you have sensitive skin, fragrance can result in redness, itch and irritation."

Lal says it's not just skin reactivity from fragrances, but also possible neurological reactivity, like migraines and headaches. 

"There's a lot of fragrance in these things and... a lot of people are more fragrance sensitive than you imagine," he says. "So you have to be very careful about using these types of products around certain people or yourself if you're someone that may be potentially fragrance sensitive." 

Other concerns include where it's being used, particularly in the groin area. 

"For women, for example, if you're using things around the vaginal area, you potentially run the risk of messing up the microbiome in the vagina," Lal says. "You have to be very careful with that, that you're not putting it too close and getting inside, which believe it or not, I'm sure people are doing."

With any skincare product that you apply to an area that has that fine, delicate skin and is subject to moisture, Cobb says you "run a higher risk of getting an irritant contact dermatitis," or  dry, itchy, irritated areas on the skin.

Secret, which is owned by Procter & Gamble, says it included gynecologists and dermatologists in safety testing to ensure its collection can be used on the skin around your "most sensitive areas," but notes it's "for external use only."

Why does my sweat smell?

It's actually a misconception that our sweat is what smells, dermatologists say. 

"Our sweat does not smell when it leaves the body, for the most part. Unless you're eating certain foods or spices, it does not smell," Lal explains. "When sweat comes out of your glands, there's certain bacteria on the skin that break the sweat down, which produces that type of odor."

How to make armpits smell better

So, what are the best ways to decrease odor in armpits and elsewhere? There are three options, Jaber says:

• Decrease sweat production — antiperspirants (not to be confused with deodorant) work by using mineral salts (aluminum salts, for example) to block the sweat glands and decrease sweat production, he explains.
• Decrease the bacteria that breaks down sweat and causes odor — Antibacterial products can help with this, Jaber says, noting some whole-body deodorant brands aim for this by including certain acids. 
• Mask the odor with a fragrance  — basically, how deodorant works

Dermatologists say you can combat odor at the source by decreasing bacteria. 

"For patients of mine with significant body odor, I recommend using (over-the-counter) antibacterial cleaning washes like Hibiclens or low-potency benzoyl peroxide washes in the shower, which can be very effective to decrease odor," Jaber says. 

Lal says you can also combat body odor in sensitive areas like the armpits, groin, buttock and feet by using bodywashes with salicylic acid or glycolic acid.

"That will, over time, reduce the amount of bacteria on the skin so you don't make that body odor," he explains. 

Topical antibiotics or medicines for certain malodorous conditions or excessive sweating can also be prescribed, Cobb says.

Beyond that, general behavioral measures can also help. 

"Try to shower and rinse off. Try to really pad the areas dry and let them air out a lot so that you're minimizing that moist, occlusive environment. Changing out your shoes, changing out your socks, changing out your clothes, those kinds of things," Cobb suggests.

Dove says its whole-body deodorants are "optimized to tackle odor at its source instead of just covering it up."

"Our product targets odor at its source using a proprietary deodorizing agent to manage bacteria," Chandan said. "Additionally, our creams and sticks help absorb unwanted moisture from sweat, further reducing the opportunity for odor to develop and helping to stop chafe."

Secret says its whole-body deodorant was also designed to prevent odor at the source. "Each form (spray, cream, stick) is made with a unique ingredient that fights odor-causing bacteria over time while being gentle on sensitive skin. The different forms give people flexibility in how and where to protect against body odor," Jones said. 

Still dealing with odor?

Cobb recommends determining where the odor is coming from, as it might not be a result of sweating.

For groin smell, for example, is it actually coming from the surrounding skin? 

"If you did have odor coming more vaginally, that might be a sign that you want to see a gynecologist to make sure there's nothing else going on," she says, warning that you "wouldn't want to use an all-body deodorant in the vagina or vaginal mucosa."

You could also be dealing with a different dermatological condition that causes odor, Lal explains, like hidradenitis suppurativa, where people get boils in their groin, armpits and under their breasts.

Other medical conditions can also be associated with certain odors, such as diabetes, liver disease and kidney disease, Cobb says, encouraging patients to seek professional help for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
