Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30L Backpack Review

' src=

Venturing into the backcountry demands reliable gear that can seamlessly blend functionality, durability, and comfort. The Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 Backpack is that ideal companion for small and mid-range tours, offering both a sleek design and fit with just the right amount of room to carry all of your essentials.

30L Capacity

Inside Ortovox Touring Backpack

With a generous 30-liter capacity, the Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 strikes a balance between spaciousness and practicality. The backpack’s dimensions (approx. 55 x 30 x 20 cm) provide ample room for essential gear without compromising on the sleek and streamlined profile. In the areas that need it most, the material is reinforced to ward against abrasion, adding an extra layer of resilience.

If you are a conscious consumer, you’ll appreciate knowing that Ortovox assures the product was manufactured under fair working conditions in conformity with the Fair Wear Foundation, the backpack contains no environmentally harmful per- or polyfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), and it was produced in the most environmentally friendly way possible. With any unavoidable CO2 emissions being offset, the backpack is rated climate neutral.

Safety + Accessibility

Ortovox Snow Safety Pocket

I’m always a fan of backpacks having a separate compartment for my avalanche gear strategically placed for quick access if I ever need it. The TOUR RIDER 30’s dedicated compartment fits my shovel and probe snuggly, with loops to hold the probe and shovel handle.

Intuitive Design

Crista Valentino Ski Touring

One standout feature is the backpack’s design. The TOUR RIDER 30 boasts a well-thought-out layout with multiple compartments, making organization a breeze. The main compartment is accessible from both the front and back panel. This gains major points because I hate digging through my backpack to access what’s fallen to the bottom or pulling out my water just to have to shove it (unsuccessfully) back in at the top of my pack where it sloshes around.

A mid-size zippered compartment at the top lets me store my ski straps, an extra buff, and sunscreen. I’ve tried using it for sunglasses or goggles and they  fit, but I’m not sold on it. More on that below. A vertical front pocket is slim, but I’ve found it’s a great place to store extra ski straps, a thin pair of gloves, and some not-crushable snacks.

Comfortable Carry System

Women Carrying Skis on Backpack

The backpack incorporates an ergonomic and adjustable carry system that ensures comfort during extended tours. Padded shoulder straps, a breathable back panel, and a hip belt contribute to an ergonomic fit. I have a tiny waist and the waist belt on backpacks are typically impossible for me to get tight enough for them to actually be useful.

This pack’s design fit my body much better than others (although you’ll see in the photo that I still have it pulled as tight as possible and there’s a significant amount of extra strap looped up. I’ll usually just trim those down to a manageable size). I like that I have two ways to carry my skis: A Frame or Diagonal. There is also a snowboard and snowshoe carry set up plus loops for hiking poles or an ice axe.

  • 7 compartments
  • Access to the main compartment from the front and back panel
  • Separate avalanche gear compartment
  • Two option ski carry (A-Frame or diagonal)
  • Snowboard and snowshoe attachment
  • Ice ax and hiking pole loops
  • Chest strap with signal whistle
  • Integrated helmet net
  • Map compartment
  • Hydration system compatible
  • Polyester 600D 100% recycled material

What Can Be Improved?

I only have one main gripe about the Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30: the goggle compartment. The mid-size zipper on the top of the pack seems like it wants to be a goggle or sunglass compartment, but it feels a bit too tight and isn’t fleece lined. I would have preferred to see this pocket be better designed.

Overall Impression

Women Hiking Teton Pass with Skis

The Ortovox TOUR RIDER 30 ($160.00) is a great option for short to medium length backcountry tours. The under-designed goggle compartment isn’t detrimental enough for me to not recommend this pack, and it’s currently my go-to for those half-day adventures. The backpack’s durability, avalanche safety integration, and thoughtful design make it a compelling choice for those who prioritize performance and functionality in their winter adventures.

Northeast Alpine Start

Gear reviews, trip reports, and how-to articles for northeast adventures, gear review- ortovox tour rider 30 backpack.

For the majority of the winter I have been touring in the Ortovox Tour Rider 30 . Ultimately it’s a well thought out design that rides well but it did have a couple small quirks I’ll share in my review.

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

As always let’s start with the manufacture description and specs before digging into the details.

Description

The Tour Rider 30 is the ideal backpack for long day tours. In addition to a separate safety compartment, the backpack is also equipped with ski and snowboard fastenings, front and rear access to the main compartment and an ice axe and hiking pole fastening. As with all ORTOVOX backpacks, the Tour Rider 30 has an integrated signal whistle and chest strap. The body-hugging cut, the load control cords in combination with the foam back and ergonomic straps make this the perfect backpack.

  • Chest strap with signal whistle
  • Ice axe and hiking pole loops
  • Bright Inside
  • Water-resistant zipper
  • Separate safety compartment
  • Access to main compartment: front
  • Compression strap
  • Hydration system compatible
  • Access to main compartment: back

MATERIAL 450D Polyester + 600D Polyester

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

What I love

This pack has a front panel that allows almost complete access to every nook and cranny in the main compartment but if what you are looking for is tucked away at the very bottom the whole back panel zips open for total access.

The foam panels in the back panel and the gel-like closed cell foam used in both the shoulder straps and waist belt is the perfect material for helping this pack carry well on long up tracks. The pack rides a little high on me which worked well when I was using it with a ski mountaineering harness.

Lightweight and Streamlined

Weighing only 2 pounds and having tapered sides and bottom this pack has that “bullet” feel to it and is unlikely to get caught while bushwhacking your way into the next drainage in search of fresh lines.

Ortovox Tour Rider 30 Backpack Review

What I would change

There is a small zippered pocket on the top that at first appears to be a goggle pocket but isn’t fleece lined or quite big enough for a pair of goggles. I used it to keep my headlamp, knife, and a few snacks handy but I’d like the option to stow my goggles in that area. The avalanche gear storage is a bit interesting on this pack. The probe and shovel handle have dedicated slots inside on the back panel while the shovel blade fits best in a zippered pocket on the outside of the pack. I prefer to keep my tools all in one spot and generally lean towards external avalanche safety gear pockets (like on the Ortovox Haute Route that I am also reviewing) that do not require accessing the main compartment to remove or stow.

For short to medium length back-country ski tours this is a really nice option. Small enough to be useful for side-country touring and big enough to stretch into a full day tour this is a solid choice in a line up of well designed Ortovox packs and one you should consider taking a look at!

Test Ortovox Tour rider 30 2019

2 tests ortovox tour rider 30..

nantraldam

Pratique, bien accessoirisé, très bien fini.

Points forts, points faibles.

Long Term Test: Ortovox Avabag Litric Tour 30

Six testers spent three months checking out the coolest new airbag tech to hit the market. spoiler: it lives up to the hype..

Update December 16, 2022: Ortovox is voluntarily recalling all Avabag Litric models, including the Avabag Litric Tour, Avabag Litric Freeride, and Avabag Litric Zero, due to an unspecified technical problem. Both Arc’teryx and Ortovox have ceased selling all bags with Litric technology this season, and hope to have them available next season.

From Ortovox:  “Unfortunately, we recently became aware of a technical issue. In rare cases, this issue impacts the airbag’s inflation system and reduces its protective effect. There is no risk from the LiTRIC system itself…FOR SAFETY REASONS, WE ASK THAT YOU STOP USING YOUR AVABAG LITRIC IN TERRAIN AT RISK OF AN AVALANCHE AND RETURN IT TO US…Mechanical AVABAG airbag backpacks with cartridge systems are not affected.”

Price: from $1,300 Weight: 5.3 lbs Size range: 30L, 40L, 28L (S), 36L (S)

In the winter of 2017, Swiss company Alpride launched their E1 electronic airbag system. It was built around a supercapacitor that stored electrical energy without any chemical reaction, and which was not sensitive to environmental temperature—a groundbreaking feature for a ski pack used in cold weather (a supercapacitor is an engine, not a battery, that delivers a quick and powerful transfer of energy to the fan that inflates the airbag). It was also lighter than existing electronic and canister airbag systems and rechargeable in the field with two AA batteries.

Alpride has continued to streamline the system into the new E2, which can be found in BCA, Deuter, Osprey, and Scott packs. But this year, there’s a new supercapacitor airbag design in town. Litric, a collaboration between Ortovox and Arc’teryx, boasts an even lighter and more compact fan system. It also uses a lithium-ion battery, instead of disposable and leak-prone AAs, as a secondary power source to recharge the supercapacitor after deployments. Another impressive feature: the trigger handle twists 180 degrees to lock it and unlock it, so you don’t accidentally deploy the balloon in a crowded tram or in the back of a snowcat.

Related: The best backcountry skiing and touring backpacks

Like the E1 and E2, the Litric inflates at least twice per charge. However, when fully charged, the Litric lasts at least 60 hours with the system turned on. Translation: Finally, there’s an airbag pack that you can use on multi-day ski tours without needing to plug it in. “One splitboarder put this to the test on an 11-day expedition in Alaska’s Tordrillo Range. “The Litric barely lost any charge on the whole trip,” he said. “Even with temperatures getting down to -10 degrees fahrenheit°F at night.” And, when the pack runs out of juice, it’s quick to power back up. It takes just 25 minutes to fully charge the Litric (about half the time of Alpride). Litric also claims that its lithium-ion system delivers a more reliable secondary charge because that external battery has an indicator light to tell you exactly when you’ve reached full power (the E2 does now have a small LCD screen with a battery meter on it).

Skier with Ortovox Avabag in Greenland

Thankfully, we never had to deploy the Litric in any real-world situations, but when we tested the mechanism at the end of our expedition, it performed seamlessly. The handle requires a mere 50 newtons of force (Europe’s minimum standard), making it easier to deploy. And unlike with most other airbags, you don’t have to meticulously origami fold this one to repack after inflation—just stuff it back in there and zip it up.

The system is also a joy to carry because the compact airbag/battery system only weighs 2.4 pounds. That’s about four ounces lighter than Alpride’s new E2 system and nine ounces lighter than the previous E1 system. Two former gear editors brought this on a fjord skiing trip to Greenland, and both agreed that the Litric was the first airbag pack they’ve tested that wasn’t infuriatingly clunky, difficult to pack, bulky, or heavy thanks to the reduced battery and airbag size. On the flip side, the E2 system airbag is nearly 10 percent larger, which in theory, provides more float. But, the Litric airbag system has a double wall design—an internal welded bladder with a high tenacity ripstop shell—which translates to more durability. Plus, at 150 liters in volume versus the E2’s 162 liters, Litric still complies with the norm.

Also read: Are new safety gadgets keeping us safer in the backcountry, or giving us false confidence?

Since Litric was a joint effort between Ortovox and Arc’teryx, both brands are launching their own pack with the system. What’s the difference between the two? The Ortovox packs come in 500 dollars less than the Arc’teryx Litric version, and the Ortovox Zip-On System gives you more pack volume options to swap out on the same base than the Arc’teryx’s set 16-, 32-, and 42-liter choices.

Skier with Ortovox Avabag

Ortovox’s German engineering makes all the difference in this pack, keeping it simple with no unnecessary buckles or loops but maintaining key features like big, mitten-friendly zipper pulls, an avy tool compartment, a deep external accessory pocket, comfortably low-profile, not-too-thick shoulder straps— and removable straps for every accessory you could want to carry, including trekking poles and ice tools. The pack splays completely open, suitcase-style, with a smooth zipper that makes it easy to access, reorganize, and close without loading the zipper teeth. Perhaps the coolest feature: the entire main compartment zips off so you can interchange with different sizes.

Testers liked how the crotch strap attaches to a fixed webbing loop on the hip belt instead of directly to the hip belt strap, eliminating the requirement for a cumbersome metal buckle. The Litric system itself is fairly easy to remove, so you could also use the pack for other activities like ice climbing and in-bounds skiing. The only downside: testers wished there was at least one hip belt pocket for quick-access items like chapstick and a scraper.

If you ski in the backcountry more than a few days a year with any chance of finding yourself in avalanche terrain, the Avabag Litric Tour is your top choice for a lightweight, travel-friendly, and well-designed airbag that’s worth the price tag, just like your life.

*What – Ortovox Tour Rider 28 S , Aqua (28 L, short back length, 890 g overall weight)

ortovox tour rider 30 test

*Where – I have been looking for a backcountry pack to take with me on split boarding missions. This search was half-hearted last year, but after attending the 2016 SAFE AS Clinic at Squaw Valley in December and seeing the forecast for a big winter, I re-engaged my mindset for backcountry travel, and decided to finally pull the trigger on getting a pack. Since getting the Ortovox Tour Rider 28 S , I have used it for backcountry split boarding near Tamarack Peak, Castle Peak, and Donner Summit. I have taken this pack on short 2-3 hour excursions, as well as longer, full-day trips. I have also used this pack for a weekend trip to the Lost Trail Lodge , which was home base for all day adventures around Cold Stream Canyon.

ortovox tour rider 30 test

When skinning out to the Lost Trail Lodge (4 miles from the trail head), I had this pack filled with food, a few toiletries, and extra clothing, and there was plenty of room. I was even able to bring my slippers, which is ALWAYS a nice touch at the end of a long day in the snow! J The extra weight wasn’t that comfortable (is it ever?), but the foam back helped make it a little more manageable. If I were traveling to a more rustic hut, which would have required bringing sleeping and cooking gear, this pack would be too small, but for a couple nights of glamping, it was perfect.

Initially, the most apparent feature of the Ortovox Tour Rider 28 S is the vibrant color. In general, I like bright colors, but I am especially a fan of being seen in the backcountry. I loved the fact that there is a separate space for my shovel handle and probe, and that the rear zipper allows easy access to this relevant safety equipment – this was a necessary feature for me when shopping for a pack. I am also a giant fan of zippered pockets in the hip straps, and am stoked that the Ortovox Tour Rider 28 S incorporated this feature. Sometimes I start bonking suddenly, and having quick access to snacks is a life saver that allows me to keep trudging along the skin track without slowing down the group…or getting hungry and grouchy!

ortovox tour rider 30 test

The external snowshoe/snowboard fastener is a nice touch; although I have a split board and hope to be skinning more than hiking, it’s good to know that if I have to take the board off, there’s a place to put it securely.

Ortovox seems to have put a lot of thought into the needs of backcountry users, and the Tour Rider 28 S has many great features based on this perspective including: ice axe and hiking pole attachment, ski fix (either to the side or diagonally), signal whistle on the chest strap, rope attachment, and a bright inside to better see your gear.

ortovox tour rider 30 test

The strap that is meant to hold the shovel blade didn’t work well for me, even though I’m using an Ortovox shovel. The strap kept slipping down the shovel blade and didn’t remotely work to hold it in place.

ortovox tour rider 30 test

Both sides of the pack include upper and lower straps, but it would be great if one of the sides had a lower pocket that could fit the base of a water bottle or thermos in. A minor issue I ran into was when I clipped a water bottle to the side of the pack and attempted to secure it with the bottom strap, it kept swinging freely at the bottom, which was slightly annoying.

*Suggestions –

Features I would love to see added and/or changed in the next iteration of the Ortovox Tour Rider 28 S include:

  • Incorporated hard case for sunglasses; it’s nice to know my shades will be protected for the skin up the next ridge!
  • Separate pocket for my shovel blade, in order to keep my gear better organized and more accessible.
  • Another pocket inside the main body of the pack would be nice for gear organization.
  • It would be great if BOTH hip straps had a zippered pocket – I would use one for snacks and the other for my multi-tool. Have I mentioned how much I LOVE hip pockets?! :-)

So far so great! This pack is really comfortable, especially for a petite woman. I like the size as well; I tend to get cold and need lots of layers with me, so the 28 L of space provides enough room for all the gear I need (extra gloves and socks, first aid kit, skins, snacks, layers, etc.). I am excited about many future days in the backcountry, and I know that this pack will facilitate those adventures. See you in the mountains!

Skitourenrucksack: Die 7 besten Modelle 2024?

ortovox tour rider 30 test

1. Bester Skitourenrucksack für eine Tagestour

Salomon Trailblazer 20 Unisex Rucksack

2. Bester Skitourenrucksack für Damen

SALEWA Damen WINTER TRAIN Rucksack

  • Gewicht: 745g
  • Maße: 47 x 27 x 22cm
  • Volumen: 22l

3. Bester Skitourenrucksack aus nachhaltiger Produktion

Mammut Herren Rucksack Lithium

4. Bester Skitourenrucksack mit Helmhalterung

ORTOVOX Mens Tour Rider 30 Backpack

6. Bester Skitourenrucksack in verschiedenen Farben

Nitro Rover 14 Snowboardrucksack
