Exploring Passy: A Peaceful Walk in the Shade of the Eiffel Tower

A bit of history: the village of passy.

The area of Passy is located in the heart of the 16th arrondissement of Paris along the Seine River between the Trocadéro Gardens and the ‘Maison de la Radio’. It is a peaceful and smart area made charming thanks to its luxurious buildings Belle Epoque or Art Nouveau style, its cobbled alleys, high stairs and great views on the Eiffel Tower.

The Village of Passy was born when a community of monks attracted by the vineyards and the beautiful views on the Seine River settled there in 1493. The famous French writer Honoré de Balzac moved there in 1840 and one can still visit the house where he put the finishing touches to ‘La Comédie Humaine’. In 1860 the Village of Passy was annexed to the City of Paris and it has then been gradually modernized. Most of the beautiful buildings and houses one can see today were built in the early nineties and Passy is now a very chic and sought-after residential area thanks to its luxurious houses with magnificent views on the Eiffel Tower.

Departure of the walk: metro station Passy

I invite you to discover this picturesque and beautiful area through a peaceful walk and to start it at the metro station Passy (line 6). In this place the railway is elevated and offers nice views on the surrounding buildings… And if one has arrived from the south one has just crossed the Seine on the Bir Hakeim bridge and be able to admire the Eiffel Tower on the right side of the bridge.

After leaving the platform you have to choose between two stairs, one downward leading to the banks of the Seine and to the ‘Maison de la Radio’ and the other one upward leading to the rue Raynouard and to the ‘Maison de Balzac’. Get downstairs and reach the Square de l’Alboni. Before taking the rue des Eaux on your right I suggest that you walk straight ahead in the rue de l’Alboni under the elevated railway. At the end of it wooden stairs lead to a small platform from which the views on the Seine River and on the underside of the Bir Hakeim bridge are amazing!

1st stop: the rue des eaux and the Musée du vin

Then retrace your steps to the Square de l’Alboni and turn into the rue des Eaux (Waters street). You will see in the background the entrance of the Musée du Vin (Wine Museum) located on a small square, the Square Charles Dickens. I have not visited it but I have been told that it is worth seeing especially for its environment and atmosphere. Indeed the museum is located in underground galleries which were former limestone quarries and that the monks of the Couvent de Passy used as cellars in 15th century. A glass of wine can be added to the visit (at the extra cost of 5€) and the museum also offers a restaurant. What I find the most amusing is the location of this museum, so close to the ‘rue des Eaux’, whose name comes from the mineral springs which were discovered in this area in 17th and 18th centuries!

2nd stop: the Parc de Passy

Retrace your steps in the rue des Eaux and turn right towards the Parc de Passy. The buildings in the Avenue Fremiet on your left and in the surroundings streets are really beautiful! These Belle Epoque houses were built in 1913 and designed by the French architect Albert Veque. I love their elegant fronts and balconies!

Exploring Passy-Paris- The avenue Fremiet

The Parc de Passy is a haven of peace for the local people and one can meet there after school many families or nurses with children. It offers a playground for kids, many benches and lawns where to have a rest but also a free wifi hotspot… and contrary to appearances it is not a private garden but a public park. It is surrounded by elegant recent buildings behind which appears the top of the Eiffel Tower.

3rd stop: the rue Berton and the turkish Embassy

Get out of the park in the Avenue Marcel Proust and admire in front of you the big stairs which lead to the rue Raynouard. Do not climb them and turn left in the avenue. At the end of it one can see the only Hotel Particulier remaining in Passy, the Hôtel de Lamballe, which has been occupied by the Turkish Embassy since 1954. The country has also given the name of its capital to the nearby street, the rue d’Ankara.

At the corner of the rue d’Ankara starts one of the most charming and unsual streets of Paris: the rue Berton. This very narrow cobbled path runs between two high walls. I like to walk in this street which widens in its second part and leads to the very smart rue Raynouard! You can either walk to the end of the rue Berton or climb the stairs in its middle to reach the rue Raynouard.

4th stop: the Maison de Balzac

From the rue Raynouard one can take advantage of beautiful views on the surrounding buildings and monuments… including the Eiffel Tower! At number 47 of the street one cannot miss a lovely white house with green shutters surrounded by a charming garden and offering amazing views. This is the Maison de Balzac , where the famous French writer moved in 1840 under an assumed name so as to escape his creditors. He lived there seven years during which he completed his major work: ‘La Comédie Humaine’. The Maison de Balzac is really worth the visit: The entrance is free of charge and one can see there the study where Balzac used to write, a small intimate wooden room, and also a very interesting genealogy with all the characters of ‘La Comédie Humaine’. Guess how many characters Balzac created… 2500! Really impressive! And do not miss the garden around the house: so peaceful and inspirational! THE place where to read or write…

Exploring Passy-Paris- View from Balzac House

5th stop: the rue de l’annonciation

After visiting the Maison de Balazc I suggest that you take the rue de l’Annonciation which is immediately there on the opposite side of the rue Raynouard. The first part of this street is peaceful and quiet with smart shops and leads to a lovely square where the Church Notre Dame de la Grâce de Passy is located. I invite you to enter the Church, rather modern inside, and above all to walk around it in the rue Jean-Bologne. In the back of the Church one can enjoy another pleasant square where to have a gourmet break. I love the tearoom Thé Cool for a salad or a cup of tea with a piece of cake: Everything is good, the atmosphere is very relaxed and the decor whether sitting inside or on the terrace, is really pleasant!

Exploring Passy-Paris-notre dame de la grace

Then retrace your steps to the rue de l’Annonciation. The second part of this street, between the rue Jean-Bologne and the rue de Passy is pedestrian, much busier and more shopping, with restaurants, bakeries, greengrocers, wine or cheese merchants, … Do not miss the cake shop: Les Merveilleux: so beautiful, so appetizing… and so good! I have the same shop nearby my home and love their cakes, especially the assorted mini-cakes!

6th stop: impasse des carrières

The rue de l’Annonciation ends Place de Passy, a very busy circle. One will regret the peace and quiet of the beginning of the walk! Turn right in the rue de Passy. It is time for shopping if you wish as the rue de Passy is the main road of the area and offers a lot of fashion shops: All the fashion brands are present. But if you wish to enjoy some peace and quiet again I recommend you to turn in the third street on your left: Impasse des Carrières. The contrast with the rue de Passy is striking! No more traffic noise; one can hear the birds singing! The place is charming, looks a bit like countryside and houses a junk shop and a sake bar with a hushed atmosphere. It is in fact the head office of Foodex , a company specialized in the importation and distribution of Japanese products.

Exploring Passy-Paris-The impasse des carrieres

End of the walk: Back to the metro

In the rue Claude Chahu, which is the next street after the Impasse des Carrières, one can admire a beautiful Art Nouveau building which was designed in 1903 by the architect Charles Klein and the ceramist Emile Muller. The front side and the ceramics inside the hall are both worth seeing. This is our last stop. To go back to the metro Passy retrace your steps in the rue de Passy, turn left in the rue Chernovitz and left again in the rue Raynouard. At the level of 9 rue Raynouard do not miss the entrance of the Rue des eaux, long stairs going down to the departure of our walk!

Le Pont de Passy et la Tour Eiffel

Marc Chagall French

Not on view

Lines and planes converge at the center of this composition, the subject of which is the urbanization and modernization of the city of Paris. Chagall painted this picture in 1911, one year after he first saw the Eiffel Tower during his travels to Paris from Russia, his native country. The dynamic composition centers at the famous Parisian monument. A blood-red road leads the eye inward with a perspectival rush towards the focal point. Powerlines on the right create a sharp receding diagonal that are mirrored by the blue skyline on the left. Below, a brick-red wall creates a dynamic thrust into the painting and is interrupted on the left by the new Pont de Passy, above which travels the city’s new Métro line. For all of its linear energy, Chagall intensifies the composition with consciously jarring juxtapositions of color. A painting about transportation, communication, and speed is met with a contradictory sense of timelessness suggested by the presence of a horse, Chagall’s personal imagery reminiscent of home.

Where to shoot the best views of the Eiffel Tower?

Full Width Featured Image With Sidebar

Last Updated:  17 April 2024

If you are planning a trip to France and have a good camera, here are the places where to shoot the best views of the Eiffel Tower . They are listed in random order and this is not a ranking. I have been enjoying taking pictures in Paris for quite some time. Particularly since 2014 when we moved from Sydney, Australia to France. For the past few years, I truly enjoyed discovering incredible spots of the iron lady.

My Top 10 best views of the Eiffel Tower

There are many vantage points from where you can capture nice shots of the Eiffel Tower . There are zillions of great photos of the Eiffel Tower taken from the Trocadéro and the Champ-de-Mars. I did shoot a few photos from there too!

But there are so many beautiful photos from this area that they’ve become very familiar and not so exceptional… With a bit of research and while walking the streets of Paris, I discovered many fascinating ‘off the beaten path places. I’m telling you, I could spend hours shooting the City of Lights. Photographing Paris is definitely one of my favourite passions!

Ok, now let’s go to the 10 places where to shoot the best views of the Eiffel Tower.

Pont Alexandre III and the Eiffel Tower from Cours-la-Reine

One of my favourite spots where you can point the camera at a beautiful Parisian scene: the extravagant Pont Alexandre III with its lamp posts, the spire of the American church and the Eiffel Tower in the background. The best is to hang around at sunset you can shoot some stunning scenes at gold hour… and to stay on the site when the blue hour comes!

Avenue de Camoëns

The cul-de-sac street in the 16th arrondissement provides one of my favourite views of the Eiffel Tower. The monument is framed by grand Haussmannian buildings with their elegant balconies.

The place looks great at blue hour with the Eiffel Tower is all lit up and glitters.

You’ll enjoy popping over the picturesque street of rue Berton to get some fantastic shots of the Eiffel Tower. Situated in the 16th arrondissement, the street later becomes a narrow lane. Find out more about rue Berton .

Place de Mexico

So many tourists wander between the place du Trocadéro and the Champ-de-Mars to admire the Eiffel Tower… but how many of them trek over to the Place de Mexico for pictures that are worth a stop?

The perspective from there runs via the avenue d’Eylau and the Place du Trocadéro.

Avenue du Président Wilson/rue de la Manutention

From the top of the stairs of rue de la Manutention, you’ll reach the lively avenue du Président Wilson. There you’ll be able to grab a couple of interesting shots of the Eiffel Tower. I recommend shooting the rooftops scene in the afternoon with the light coming through the West.

Rue de l’Université

Rue de l’Université is a very long street spanning two arrondissements (6th and 7th). The spot where you get the view of the Eiffel Tower is situated at the corner with avenue de la Bourdonnais. I recommend shooting it at blue hour when the tower is lit up.

The Eiffel Tower from square Rapp

One of the most fascinating ‘off the beaten path’ places where to shot the Eiffel Tower. The secretive square Rapp is surrounded by interesting buildings.

Go there in the morning when the sunlight is still coming from the East or at the blue hour when the tower is lit up.

Rue Saint-Dominique

At the intersection with rue Saint-Dominique and boulevard de la Tour Maubourg (7th arrondissement), the Eiffel Tower dominates a typical Parisian street. Use your zoom for a better effect.

Place de Breteuil

Not many tourists know of this spot in the 7th arrondissement . In fact, you’ll enjoy two perspectives: one leading to the École Militaire and the Eiffel Tower and the other to the Invalids. There is so much magnificent Haussmannian buildings there and I recommend shooting in the morning to get beautiful light on the tower.

Boulevard Pasteur

There is a great view of the Eiffel Tower between the place des cinq martyrs du lycée Buffon and the corner with the boulevard de Vaugirard. The spot makes for some interesting shots.

Other best views of the Eiffel Tower from in and around Paris

10 spots to get the best views of the Eiffel Tower aren’t enough, bien sûr ! Here are a few other places you might not be familiar with…

From the Louvre and the Tuileries

From the Tuileries Garden:

From Place de la Concorde

From montmartre.

The Eiffel Tower from Square Nadar:

Henri Riviere - The Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower

Les Trente-Six Vues de la Tour Eiffel (original French title) Thirty-six lithograph printed in four tones on thick wove paper, 1888-1902. Reference: Fields pages 77-78. The series was conceived as a series of woodcuts at the time of the construction of the tower, circa 1888, but was finally made into a set of lithographs in 1902. Printed and published by Eugène Verneau, Paris. Plate: each circa 6 ½ x 8 ¼ inches.

This will be the first in a series of posts related to the works of Henri Rivière .  Despite the amount of attention given to this artist over the years by many, and deservedly so, an illustrated catalog raisonné still does not exist.  The simple list drafted by Armond Fields in his book in the early 1980s, is really the only complete reference we have to go on.  Below you will find an illustrated list of the works which are part of this set, which was published bound in book format.  All the way at the bottom of this list, you will also find a brief historical introduction about the relevance of this series of prints.

In the late 1880s, Henri Rivière had created several sketches of the Eiffel Tower as it appeared in the Parisian cityscape.  Since circa 1887 he had also been one of the pioneer artists to made use of photography for artistic purposes.  As a matter of fact it is likely that his photographic work prompted the illustrious Edgar Degas (1834-1917), who was a close friend of Rivière, to also take up photography later in life.

As the artist recollects in his memoirs ( Henri Rivière, Les détours du chemin, souvenirs, notes & croquis, 1864-1951 , Editions Equinoxe, Saint-Remy de Provence, 2004, p. 68-70) he and two friends who were active at the  Chat Noir  had gained access to the tower while it was being completed.  In these memoirs Rivière recounts the eventful ascent and descent, as his friend Jules Jouy, the famous Montmartre  chansonnier , suffered from vertigo, and had to be taken down by crane in a cloth bag!  During this visit Rivière had completed a photo reportage of the final stage of the Tower’s construction.  He gave a set of 27 photographs to the Eiffel archive (now at the  Musée d’Orsay ).  The 39 photographs of the Tower, out of about 350 known photographs by the artist, show his fascination for this metal age symbol (see:  Henri Rivière, graveur et photographe , Edition de la Réunion des musées nationeaux, Paris, 1988).

Henri Rivière is known mostly for his attention to soft landscapes, and it stands to reason that the angular Eiffel Tower would have disturbed his world vision.  The artist however showed with his interest in photography and in the Tower, that he was not averse to progress.  On the contrary; many of the images of the series of the Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower, show his fondness to this beacon of modern life in the Parisian landscape.  Chances are that this elegant landmark, visible from so many points of the French capital, appealed to him as a silhouette.  His activities for the  Chat Noir  cabaret, where he had been presenting elaborate shadow plays, made him acutely aware of the effects obtained in Japanese arts.  The flattening of the world into a single dimension, unconcerned with the depth of field, clearly appealed to him immensely.  This interest in simplifying perspective is profusely clear in many compositions of the  Views of the Eiffel Tower .  Circa 1900, after years of ever finer work in color lithography, he decided to translate these drawings and photographs into a series of prints:  Les Trente-Six Vues de la Tour Eiffel .  The ambitious project was a collaboration between fellow artists and friends: Asrène Alexandre, the famous art critic, wrote the prologue; Georges Auriol contributed design, and typography; and Eugène Verneau, of course, printed the works.  It is almost certain that the edition projected at 550 was never completed.  After extensive research, it seems likely that the edition was terminated around 300 or even a little bit before that point.  Obviously the production of such an elaborate publication was expensive.  It is likely that after the initial purchases from regular customers, it was decided that finishing the edition was to be ruinous.

The significance of this series cannot be overstated.  The sheer ambition of it has to be acknowledged.  As Armond Fields elegantly put it in is seminal book about the artist: “Rivière completed another important project, one which had occupied his time on and off since 1888: recording the building of the Eiffel Tower.  He had completed his sketches in the 1890’s, and had made two of the images into woodcuts, but had abandoned cutting the rest of the images.  There were thirty-six separate images, each to be printed in five colors with a total of 550 sets produced, 99,000 separate printings were required.  Rivière decided to translate the images into lithographs, and in 1902,  Les Trente-Six Vues de la Tour Eiffel appeared. […]  The work was loosely based on Hokusai’s  Thirty-Six Views of Fujiyama , and is one of the greatest examples of Japonisme.  The combination of a Japanese style depicting and urban, technological, Western object makes it a perfect example of how French artists synthesized their Japanese influences.” ( Henri Rivière , Armond Fields, Gibbs M Smith, Salt Lake City, 1983, p. 30).  And as Arsène Alexandre clearly states in his introduction, the Tower is only an excuse to depicting the beauty of Paris: “Here, it is a matter of telling the flabbergasting beauty of Paris, to tell it again to the ungrateful and undisturbed Parisian who always forget it, and to tell it in all its forms and all its colors.  To make of this album a memento of this beauty to the people of today and a testimonial for those who come after us.”.
