Best Patagonia Wine Tour for Wine Lovers

patagonia wine tours

Our love for wine was the reason behind creating this Best Patagonia Wine Tour for Wine Lovers Guide. We’ve always found ourselves in wine country during our travels. Sure, it’s not whitewater rafting or sky diving, but wine exploration is one of our favorite types of adventure. Things can get a bit complicated down in this region so it’s important to come prepared and have tours proactively set up!

Something is amazing about sitting among beautiful vineyards while enjoying a nice glass of wine. While Malbec will always play an important role in Patagonian wine, it is the production of Pinot Noir that got us interested in exploring the region. If you ever come across a Pinot Noir from Neuquén or the Río Negro we encourage you to give it a try.

We were inspired by the wine route map on this bottle to venture into Patagonia Wine Country

Learning about the new, up-and-coming wine region of Patagonia Wine Country, we took it upon ourselves to be the pioneers of this region and conquer this very much unexplored route. Also, it was a great opportunity to break up the 18-hour bus ride from Bariloche to Mendoza .

Where We Stayed

We made reservations for the new year at Nando Hotel Apartments in Cipolletti. Below are a few other great options for staying in the area.

Budget: Edificio Nikemen (well-equipped apt.) or Patagonia Suites (clean with river views) Mid-Range: Limay Bed&Breakfast (kitchenette) or Howard Johnson (amazing pool!) Luxury: Hotel Casino Magic (spa, casino, pool, best in the area)

Below are the pictures of the pool area at Nando Hotel Apartments .

Researching Options

To prepare, we emailed, Tweeted, and Facebook messaged almost every single bodega in the area. We had two negatives going against us. First, we don’t own cell phones to call to make reservations. Second, it was the New Year holiday.

The results? Not good. We only received one email back from an owner stating that they will be out of the area on holiday. Gee, thanks . It started to make sense why most travelers head straight to Mendoza and ignore this part of Argentina.

Travelers who focus on budget travel often suggest, “Hire a taxi and do it yourself.” Here’s why that is just plain bad advice in this particular area:

Unless you are fluent in Spanish, you will not get much out of the tour as the majority of them, especially the boutique wineries will not be in English. Unfortunately, the bodegas are not very good at securing reservations.

Considering that our local guide knew these people personally, had a cell phone, made reservations, and STILL had difficulty with someone consistently being present upon our arrival. Also, d uring the busy harvest time, from mid-February through March, it may be difficult to secure a tour and tasting at a family-run boutique bodega.

There’s often a great distance between wineries. There are no bike tours in this area. You’ll probably spend a lot on taxi fare by hiring one for the whole day. In this area, you are better off going with a guide that can easily transport you from one bodega to another, taking care of all the logistics, especially when you arrive at a closed gated entrance!

Best Guided Wine Tours in Patagonia

Harry luckily connected with a local guide that helped us make our time here more productive. She specialized in wine tours and also offered a paleontology tour. Many private guided tours will combine wine and the paleontological circuit.

Unfortunately, since our visit, our guide has gone incognito and there don’t seem to be many organized tours occurring in this area. For this reason, if you’re intent on visiting this area plan on renting a car and working out the logistics with the wineries on your own.

Our Guided Tours

How much? We went on two outings with María José. The first day focused on the Río Negro area and the second day, we ventured to the San Patricio del Chañar region.

The first day’s tour was private and cost about USD 105, and the second day’s tour was with two other people (a group of four) and cost about USD 70. Considering that private tours in Mendoza run about USD 170-200 per person per day, we felt that this was a good value for a whole-day tour.

Unfortunately, our first day out was New Year’s Eve, so we only made it to two wineries. The larger Humberto Canale and then the smaller, family-run Agrestis.

The outdoor tasting area at Huberto Canale

For an extra USD 7, we received an in-depth tour of Humberto Canale with a tasting of three wines and a plate of cheese to accompany it. The grounds were lovely and the tasting area was outside and right next to the vines!

patagonia wine tours

At Agrestis, the owner came out to greet us and we chatted about his wines and snapped a few photos near the vines, after purchasing a bottle for our New Year’s celebration. There was no additional cost.

We also had a tour of the Río Negro area and a stop at a local fruit orchard, which creates fruit-inspired chocolates.

Neuquén/San Patricio Del Chañar

Along with another couple, we ventured to three bodegas; Bodega Secreto Patagónico , Familia Schroeder , and NQN . Bodega Secreto Patagónico was a newer, up-and-coming bodega, while Familia Schroeder and NQN are larger and more established.

The only additional fee was at Familia Schroeder where we were charged 60 pesos for the tasting, but we were allowed to use the tasting fee as a credit to purchase a bottle, which we did of course! The SAURUS Malbec was the same price.

patagonia wine tours

We continued to lunch at NQN’s Malma Resto Bar , where we were slightly disappointed that they did not receive our guide’s reservation email. These things tend to happen in this part of the world and you just need to be extra patient.

Although the food was great, service was greatly lacking as we waited at a dirty table for over 30 minutes to even place an order. It was slow even by Argentine standards. The Argentine couple we were touring with was even getting frustrated!

How fantastic to have visited a bodega in Patagonian Wine country that had discovered a new species of dinosaurs while constructing the building. Hence, the name…”SAURUS.” There’s a mini-museum on the site at Familia Schroeder Bodega.

Budget Tips

The larger wineries are more established and commercial. Even though they have some perks, (e.g., English tours, restaurants with vineyard views on site, promotions, etc.), there are so many tourists that you start feeling like you’re just another number.

Don’t be afraid to request more outings to the smaller, boutique bodegas to get a more personal, unique experience. Our favorite bodega was at Secreto Patagónico, in which the tour host was not to be found despite our reservation. So Josè, the Agricultural Technician, graciously led our tour. We ended up with a lovely, intimate tasting and we left with the leftover wine…all for no cost!

Although much of this area is very “flighty” (pun intended!), and at times unorganized, overall we enjoyed exploring the Patagonia wine region. It feels fresh, and unvisited, and is a more intimate wine experience than touring with the masses in the more costly Mendoza.

patagonia wine tours

Wine has always played a big role in our travels both near and far. Our favorite wine regions to visit? Hands down…the Franschhoek Valley in South Africa, Mendoza, and Patagonia!

Patagonia Wine

Extreme, windy, healthy terroir.

Patagonian wine is a special animal and we recommend spending at least three nights on our wine tours Patagonia to enjoy two full days of tours and tastings at the most southerly vineyards in the world. Also, with this being the land of massive landscapes and dinosaurs we can find some great non-wine things for you to do, so maybe you will need a bit more time?

You may have heard of some of the bodegas we mention below, others you will not have heard of before. We combine well-established names such as the Schroeder Family and Fin del Mundo with some old-school, traditional bodegas such as Humberto Canale so you can compare and contrast Patagonia wine style, quality, and infrastructure.

Finding a Dinosaur on your winery is a little unusual

Day 1 | San Patricio de Chañar | Stylish + Cutting Edge

Along with our high-altitude wine tours in the extreme North of Argentina, this is the country´s newest wine region. Wineries here are new builds and have only been producing vintages since 2002. These wineries are custom-designed, modern, and use high-tech to ensure efficiency and get the best from this challenging environment. They appear to be doing so very well judging by the many plaudits they have already garnered.

Our wine tours Patagonia start when we pick you up after breakfast and drive you through the oasis that the rivers have produced in this arid landscape, and after 45 or 50 minutes we will arrive at by far the largest winery in the far south, Bodega Fin del Mundo (World´s End Winery). This winery is huge, very well run (flying winemaker Michel Rolland jets in occasionally), and has a capacity of nine million liters of our favorite beverage. We will have a quick tour of the facility and then enjoy a tasting of a range of wines to get our day off to a great start.

“The Special Blend is where global consultant, Michel Rolland, has the greatest influence. It’s a blend of equal parts Malbec and Merlot with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, ripe, fleshy fruit, attractive oak integration, and cassis and blueberry fruit. Stylish winemaking from Patagonia.” 92 Points, Tim Atkin, MW

Not many wineries find a buried Dinosaur when they are building their facility

Then it is off to the sister winery of Malma (same owners, previously NQN) a short drive away. The design of this winery is kind on the eye, the lines of the building, the way it sits in the landscape, the sculptures in the gardens, and the beautiful views from the restaurant. There is a nice cellar area where tastings are made, there is plenty to like about this winery and its well-balanced wine.

We will have a VIP tasting here after we have had a look around the installations, this tasting will cover the whole range of wine, with a number of varieties and vintages. You will get a great overview of the Patagonia terroir during this tasting and we will provide some tapas to keep you on track while you taste. If the option presents itself we will also taste work in progress from the tanks.

After saying goodbye to Malma we will drive a short distance to the Schroeder Family winery. This again is a new build and a fantastic job they have made of it too. However, while they were doing it they dug up a huge dinosaur!

Pinot Noir really benefits from the terroir and climate conditions in Patagonia

Depending on how our wine tours Patagonia schedule looks, and how hungry you are, we will either launch straight into lunch or take a tour and tasting beforehand. Your lunch spot has nice views over the vines and the four-course menu will come with wine pairings from the vineyards surrounding you. Your tour of this winery will show you the production and aging areas with a final tasting of the day down in the cellar. Plus you will have the history of the dinosaur discovery explained to you, see the exhibit, and some of the bones in the small museum.

Day 2 | Rio Negro | “Old School” Traditions

Today is a chance to see the opposite side of the same coin, traveling East from the city we will visit the traditional heart of winemaking in northern Patagonia. The Rio Negro area is home to the historic, old-school wineries, lacking high levels of new investment and modern equipment, and producing on a much smaller scale than their San Patricio counterparts. However, there are also some new projects that have taken over old wineries with innovative plans to improve infrastructure and wine quality. Miras  Winery is a clear example of this.

Marcelo Miras entered the Patagonia wine industry working for Humberto Canales (which you will visit later today) and later moved to Fin del Mundo where he spent 14 years as a winemaker. The Miras family has been involved in producing wine since 2001, but only in small quantities and only for family and friends to drink. But then from 2005 they started producing more seriously and selling commercially, the track was laid for the Miras brand.

There is more than oeway to visit Patagonia wineries - take it easy on the tasting beforehand!

When we visit we will tour the small bodega with Mr. Miras senior or junior, now that his son Pablo is also a winemaker and is hands-on in the winery. Miras specializes in Pinot Noir and Merlot which grow well in this extreme climate. You will get the chance to try a number of glasses here before we move to our second winery, Humberto Canales.

This bodega is the oldest in the Patagonia wine region, with vineyards planted way back in 1912 by Humberto Canale who worked as an engineer on the first railroads of Argentina. The 200 hectares purchased back then are now 500 in number, of which 145 hectares are planted with vines.

Canale produces a wide range of our favorite liquid and you are able to taste a good number of them during a premium tasting. You will tour the old and new facilities and get an overview of the history of the area. After we are fully topped-up here we will head off to Bodega Agrestis where we will eat lunch and enjoy a tasting.

Delivery transport from years past at Humberto Canale

We can squeeze in one more winery in the Rio Negro area, and assuming we are on schedule we will end the day at Bodega Chacras. The Chacras Winery is owned by the Italian family Incisa Della Rocchetta, famous for the Super-Tuscan Bordeaux-style Sassicaia, so there is plenty of history and know-how behind these wines – we will try some together. The team at Chacras is very enthusiastic about biodynamics and the list of methods is fascinating – click here to learn more as they describe the processes better than we would.

By this stage, you will have enjoyed many glasses of Patagonia wine and a good lunch so it will be the perfect moment to drive you back to your hotel in Neuquen. Tomorrow we will probably be delivering you to the airport to fly to another part of Argentina .

Why Visit Patagonia?

Visiting Patagonia for many is a dream come true. This large and breathtaking region spreads across two South American countries - Argentina and Chile. The majestic Andes Mountains acts as a natural border between these two picturesque countries. If you’re lucky enough to embark on any wine travel adventures in Southern Patagonia, prepare to be completely blown away by the entrancing landscapes of deserts, rich grasslands, glacial fjords and the ancient Valvadian temperate rainforest.

Patagonia in Argentina alone is massive. It consists of 5 provinces such as Chubut, Río Negro, Tierra del Fuego, Neuquén and Santa Cruz. Aside from Argentina’s popular Los Glaciares National Park, dramatic landscapes and wildlife, Patagonia is also one of Argentina’s wine growing regions with its viticultural zone spanning up to 300 km. Produced here are impeccable varieties of wine including the likes of Pinot Noir, Merlot, Malbec, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.

When it comes to the food and wines of Patagonia you will be in for a treat as you tuck into flavour-driven cuisine such as asado (mixed grill), trucha (trout) or of course milanesa (breaded and fried meat). Everything cooked in Patagonia is made with love, care and passion, and pairs well with many of the elegant red and white wines of the region. Book your wine holidays to Patagonia - you'll see for yourself just how much there is to be explored.

Patagonia & Wineries

Over the past few decades, Argentina wines have emerged as some of the world's best. While friends back home are going next door to tour the Napa Valley, you'll be worlds away, tasting your way through Argentine vineyards, sampling Malbec and other fine varietals with the Andes in view. If not everyone in your party cares to focus on tastings during your stay in the Argentina wine country, we offer optional, equally memorable, excursions to natural sights. You'll spend the remainder of your Argentina tour exploring the top attractions of both Northern and Southern Patagonia, visiting two of the country's most famous national parks, Nahuel Huapi, prized by hikers for its pristine lakes and breathtaking scenery, and Los Glaciares where the immense turquoise Perito Moreno Glacier is found. For the gourmet hiker with an appreciation for world-class wine, this Argentina Patagonia tour is tops.

The entire bar including the drink cups, tables and chairs are made entirely of ice.

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your El Calafate hotel. An hour long bus ride takes you to the Bajo de las Sombras port on the shore of Lake Argentino. From there, you will board a comfortable boat for a 20 minute navigation across the lake. The cruise offers incredible views of the Perito Moreno glacier with its massive front wall of blue ice and surrounding field of icebergs. Following a beach landing, you’ll stop at a small shelter where the trekkers will be divided into groups of less than twenty. A short walk along an ancient beech forest takes you to the edge of the glacier, a prime location for photographing this spectacular natural wonder. You will be fitted with crampons and receive a safety briefing from your guides before beginning an unforgettable two hour trek on the glacier, with time for photos and a lunch break. This moderate trek will take you past small streams, lagoons, crevasses, and other ice formations as you explore the fascinating landscape of the Perito Moreno glacier. After completing the trek, you will embark on the boat for the return trip across the lake. A short bus ride brings you to an elaborate boardwalk system located across the lake from the glacier. From here you will be able to view and photograph the glacier from many angles, and possibly witness icebergs calving thunderously into the lake. In the late afternoon, you will return to your hotel for another comfortable night's rest. (B,L) **The upper age limit for the mini-trek portion of this trip is 65, regardless of fitness level.  Click here for the alternative tours available.**

Your tour of Patagonia ends with a transfer to the El Calafate airport in time to connect with your flight to Buenos Aires. Upon arrival transfer to the international airport. (B)

Due to the country's geography and location, Argentina & Patagonia offers a wide variety of climates. The Argentine mainland is mostly temperate, with seasons reversed from those in the northern hemisphere. The northern areas of Salta and around Iguazú are tropical, while southern Patagonia's weather is often cold and windy and always unpredictable. Winter (from the end of June to the beginning of October) may be cold with some rain in certain areas of Argentina, while the Northwest enjoys sunny days and warm temperatures. Summer (from December to March) is hot and sometimes humid in Buenos Aires; warm and dry in the Northwest with intermittent summer rains; and cold but sunny and sometimes windy in Patagonia.

*Temperatures in °F, Rainfall in Inches

Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

These are the basics you will need to bring for an active adventure in Patagonia:

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)

Rucksack and day bag

Reusable water bottle

Thermal base layers

Hiking clothing

Waterproof/windproof jacket

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

World-Famous Wines in the Colchagua Valley

Colchagua Valley - Montgras Vineyards

Set out for the Colchagua Valley, one of the most important wine regions in South America. This area is known for its top-quality reds, particularly Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Malbec.

The Colchagua Valley is a great place to explore by bike or by vehicle. Start at Viña Estampa, the first winery in Chile dedicated to assemblage (blend) wines. After a tour and tasting you’ll enjoy a leisurely ride to the family-run Viu Manent Winery, home to several award-winning vintages, including their Gran Reserva Malbec (2010) and Secreto de Viu Manent Syrah (2010). Following your tour and tasting, you will enjoy lunch at the winery. After lunch you will visit Neyen de Apalta Winery, which focuses all its production on one Bordeaux-style blend from 115 year-old Carménère vines.

For those who like a more relaxed ride, we offer e-bikes, which have a small motion-powered motor that lets you expend as much or as little effort as you like on your bike. If you prefer not to bike, we can also arrange this day with vehicle transport, or as a combination of biking and car transport.

Accommodations: Noi Blend

Located in the Colchagua Valley in the heart of Chilean wine country, the Noi Blend was constructed in a vintage vineyard dating back to 1875. The hotel maintains the traditional architecture and historical charm of the original structure, while emphasizing modern comfort and amenities. The 13-room hotel offers a swimming pool and a restaurant featuring local ingredients and local wines.

More Great Small Chilean Wineries in the Casablanca Valley

Casablanca Wine Valley

Visit the Casablanca Valley, an area characterized by the cool coastal breezes that create an ideal climate for growing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Pinot Noir. Start with a tour and tasting at renowned Matetic Vineyards, particularly known for their Syrah. Travel by bike or car to Kingston Vineyards, a winery pioneering the production of cool climate, artisan-style reds. Wines from the 300-acre family ranch are handcrafted and bottled on site. You will enjoy a tour and private tasting of Kingston’s distinctive wines followed by a picnic lunch. Return in the afternoon to La Casona boutique hotel, located on the property of Matetic Vineyards; a beautiful small hotel with one of the region’s best restaurants.

All bookings include a visit to the family wine cellar and production facilities, located a few miles away.

The Windswept Strait of Magellan and Last Hope Sound

Puerto Natales

Fly south to Punta Arenas and enjoy a scenic private transfer to your hotel, set just outside of the Torres del Paine National Park Entrance.
