The Pro Tour

The PDC Pro Tour is the bread and butter of any player in the PDC. Floor tournaments played behind closed doors that the ranking are build from.

The PDC Pro Tour is a series of darts tournaments organised annually by the PDC. The Pro Tour events are unique in that they are non-televised events and they comprise Professional Dart Players Association (PDPA) Players Championships, UK Open qualifiers and European Tour events.

The PDC began operating a Tour Card system in 2011, with there being a total of 128 players awarded Tour Cards every year. These allow players to participate in all Players Championship and UK Open qualifiers. There has been a particular increase of Players Championship events over recent years, all of which see players aim to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. These events are known within the sport as floor tournaments, with multiple boards featuring games taking place at one time.

The PDC Pro Tour

As of today, the PDC awards players Tour Cards through the following requirements:

  • Top 64 players from the PDC Order of Merit after the World Championship (having competed in at least ten events)
  • Tour Card holders from previous year’s Qualifying School
  • Four tour card holders from previous year’s invitations (PDC Challenge Tour & PDC Development Tour)
  • Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Challenge Tour, a series of tournaments for non-Tour Card holders
  • Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Development Tour, a series of tournaments for youth players
  • At least 16 qualifiers from a four-day Qualifying School (more places will be awarded via this method if not all the above spaces are filled)

PDPA (Professional Dart Players Association) players can only enter Pro Tour tournaments through the PDC’s online entry system. Those who are not a PDPA player must submit their entries through the local event organiser.

UK Players Championship events feature a 128-player draw, but those events which feature fewer than 128 entries will see byes awarded to players via their seeding. Seedings for these events are decided by the one-year rolling Players Championship Order of Merit, which is determined by the prize money won in Players Championships events over the 12 months before that event. Tour Card holders must pay a £100 entry fee to all Players Championship events.

Prize money won by players in the Pro Tour also contributes directly to their overall ranking in the PDC Order of Merit, which decides seedings in a number of PDC ranking tournaments . Players can also earn automatic qualifying places in major tournaments such as the World Championship, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix through their prize money earned. As such, players performances in events on the Pro Tour can have a direct correlation on their success in the televised ranking events.

Players win the following amount of prize money for their success in Pro Tour events:

  • Winner – £10,000
  • Runner-Up – £6,000
  • Semi-Finals – £3,000
  • Quarter-Finals – £2,250
  • Last 16 – £1,500
  • Last 32 – £1,000
  • Last 64 – £500

In the history of PDC Pro Tour events, no player has won more titles than Michael van Gerwen, who has 75 to his name. He sits just above Phil Taylor in the list of Pro Tour victories, who won 70 Pro Tour tournaments during his esteemed career, while Gary Anderson sits in third place with 30 victories.

Prize money [ ]

On 21 November 2022, it was announced that the prize money for the Women's Series will be doubled in 2023. [2]

The following day, it was announced that the prize money for Challenge/Development Tour events would also increase, with the prize fund going up from £10,000 to £15,000 per event. [3]

On 15 February 2023, it was announced that the prize money for the PDC European Tour events was to increase by 25% with prize funds increasing from £140,000 to £175,000 per event. [4]

This is how the prize money is divided:

  • ↑ Last 64 prize money will only be paid out, if a minimum of 128 participants take part in a Women's Series event.

PDC Tour Card [ ]

128 players are granted Tour Cards, which enables them to participate in all Players Championships events, the UK Open and qualifiers for all European Tour and select televised events. [5]

Tour cards [ ]

The 2023 Tour Cards were awarded to: [5]

  • (64) The top 64 players from the PDC Order of Merit after the 2023 World Championship .
  • (30) 30 qualifiers from 2022 Q-School not ranked in the top 64 of the PDC Order of Merit following the World Championship.
  • Jim Williams was also in the top 64 of the PDC Order of Merit, and therefore, one extra Tour Card was awarded to a Q-School qualifier.
  • (1) The winner of the 2021 European Challenge Tour ( Matt Campbell ).
  • (1) The winner of the 2021 UK Development Tour ( Bradley Brooks ).
  • (1) The winner of the 2021 European Development Tour ( Rusty-Jake Rodriguez ).
  • (2) Two highest qualifiers from 2022 Challenge Tour ( Robert Owen and Danny van Trijp ).
  • (2) Two highest qualifiers from 2022 Development Tour ( Geert Nentjes and Jurjen van der Velde ).
  • (8) The daily winners from the 2023 Q-Schools.

Afterwards, the playing field was complemented by the highest qualified players from the Q-School Order of Merit until the maximum number of 128 Pro Tour Card players has been reached. In 2023, that means that a total of 19 additional players qualified this way.

Q-School [ ]

The PDC Pro Tour Qualifying School (or Q-School) was split into a UK and European Q-School. Players that are not from Europe could choose which Q-School to compete in.

Q-School was once again split into two stages; with all players who lost their tour cards after the 2023 World Championship and the players who finished from third to sixteenth in the 2022 Challenge Tour and Development Tour Orders of Merit exempted to the final stage. The first stage consisted a block of three days, with the last eight players on each day qualifying into the final stage. A ranking of other players will also be produced with players qualifying via that ranking to produce a full list of 128 players for each final stage. [6]

Stage One took place between 9–11 January; with the Final Stage being held between 12–15 January. The winner of each day's play in the Final Stage will be given a PDC Tour Card.

The UK Q-School was held at the Marshall Arena , Milton Keynes , England; with the European Q-School held at Wunderland Kalkar in Kalkar , Germany.

An Order of Merit was created for each Q School. For every win after the Last 64, the players will be awarded 1 point.

To complete the field of 128 Tour Card Holders, places will be allocated down the final Q-School Order of Merits in proportion to the number of participants, with 9 cards going to the UK Q-School and 10 going to the European Q-School.

The following players picked up Tour Cards as a result:

Players Championships [ ]

There were 30 Players Championship events in 2023.

PDC European Tour [ ]

The PDC European Tour remained at 13 events for 2023, although there was no event in Gibraltar , ending 10 years of darts on the peninsula.

PDC Challenge Tour [ ]

The 2023 Challenge Tour will once again consist of 4 weekends of 5 events, and 1 weekend of 4 events. The top 2 players on the Order of Merit get a PDC Tour Card and a place at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship , meanwhile the winner of the Order of Merit gets a spot at the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts as well. The Challenge Tour rankings are additionally used to top up Players Championship events should not all 128 Tour Card holders choose to enter. Furthermore the eight highest ranked players from the 2024 Challenge Tour without a tour card for the 2024 season qualified for the first round of the 2024 UK Open .

PDC Development Tour [ ]

The 2023 Development Tour once again consisted of 4 weekends of 5 events, and 1 weekend of 4 events. The top 2 players on the Order of Merit got a PDC Tour Card and a place at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship , meanwhile the winner of the Order of Merit got a spot at the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts as well. Gian van Veen finished top of the rankings, earning him the Grand Slam place, but as he already had a Tour Card, the 2nd and 3rd place players ( Luke Littler and Wessel Nijman ) won Tour Cards.

The Development Tour rankings additionally form a large part of qualification for the 2023 PDC World Youth Championship . Furthermore the top 8 ranked players from the 2023 Development Tour Order of Merit, who do not manage to earn a Tour Card for the 2024 season, will qualify for the first round of the 2024 UK Open .

PDC Women's Series [ ]

The PDC Women's Series will be expanded from 20 to 24 events held over six weekends. The top 8 ranked players from money earned from the last 8 Women's Series events of 2022 and the first 12 events of 2023 will qualify for the 2023 Women's World Matchplay in Blackpool . The top two players from the series will qualify for the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship .

The winner, Beau Greaves , had qualified for the World Championship by winning the Women's World Matchplay, but she declined her invite by deciding to take part in the 2023 WDF World Darts Championship instead, so the players who finished 2nd and 3rd will take part in the World Championship instead.

Koronadal darter hits mark in PH history, first-ever Filipino into Euro Tour second round

At a glance.

Perez became the first-ever Filipino to win in the European Darts Grand Prix after beating Dutch Niels Zonneveld, 6-4, on Friday, April 19 in Sindelfingen, Germany.

Koronadal City’s very own Christian Perez hit his mark in the annals of Philippine dart history.

The 42-year-old displayed his feathery touch and poise in the face of immense pressure as he clawed back from a 4-3 deficit, closing it out with three consecutive racks to outlast his Dutch rival.

He set up a second round match against former two-time PDC world champion Gary Anderson of Scotland on Saturday, April 20 in hopes to sustain the historic run.

The South Cotabato’s marksman went toe-to-toe against his Dutch rival until they saw themselves tie at 3-3. Zonneveld put up a 12-darter to gain a 4-3 lead.

Not to be deterred, Perez pulled himself together and banked on his experience to list an 11-darter that  proved to be the dagger to the heart of his much younger rival.

Perez also became the first and only Filipino darter to obtain a Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) Pro Tour card in the United Kingdom.

Last year, the pride of Koronadal made his debut in Hildesheim, Germany where he advanced to the quarters of Event 13.

In that tournament, Perez turned heads as he downed formidable foes in the likes of Czech Karel Sedlacek, former world champ Rob Cross, Luke Woodhouse and Jamie Hughes of England.

However, his remarkable winning ways were spoiled by English Connor Scutt.

Perez and Lourence Ilagan reached the quarterfinals as well in the MyDiesel Claim 2023 World Cup Darts (WCD) in Frankfurt, Germany last June.

Anderson hails 'good fortune' after Euro Tour success in Sindelfingen

Gary Anderson (Jonas Hunold/PDC Europe)

Gary Anderson claimed he’s ‘never been so lucky’ after ending his ten-year wait for a European Tour title in Sindelfingen on Sunday. Anderson returned to winning ways on the big stage with victory in the NEO.bet European Darts Grand Prix, courtesy of an 8-6 success against Ross Smith in Sunday’s showpiece. The two-time World Champion produced a clutch 121 checkout in the penultimate leg to seize the initiative, before capitalising on seven missed darts from Smith in leg 14 to complete a landmark win at the Glaspalast. “I don’t know how I won it,” reflected Anderson, who won his previous European Tour title at the German Darts Championship in February 2014. “In my last three games I was so lucky. I have never been so lucky in my life playing darts! “It’s been a long time, a very long time [since last winning a stage title].  “Many years ago when I played on the European Tour, the crowd was starting to grow, and it’s just got bigger and bigger. “Whether it’s Germany, Holland or wherever – everyone now wants to play darts, and why not, because these crowds are fantastic.” Competing in just his fourth European Tour event since bringing a seven-year hiatus from the circuit to an end in 2023, Anderson continued his resurgence to scoop the £30,000 top prize. The Scot registered a stunning 110.23 average in his second round win over former PDC Asian Champion Christian Perez, landing a brace of 11-darters on his way to victory. The 53-year-old then recorded another ton-topping average to sink Gerwyn Price, before edging past Josh Rock and reigning champion Rob Cross in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively. “I played well in my first game and I think it went right downhill since,” joked Anderson, who rises three places to 21st on the PDC Order of Merit. “I should have never beaten Josh Rock, I should have never beaten Rob Cross, and I shouldn’t have beaten Ross Smith either. “It’s not very often I win a game being lucky, but we will pinch that one, and hopefully the next time I might win it outright by playing properly!” Smith, meanwhile, survived ten match darts in advancing to his first European Tour final, winning through deciding-leg encounters against Ritchie Edhouse, Damon Heta & Michael van Gerwen. “To be fair I’ve rode my luck throughout this tournament, so I can’t complain,” claimed Smith, a European Championship winner in October 2022. “I don’t know if I’m learning to dig deep and win games or if I’m just lucky to be honest, but at the end of the day I was in the final. “Obviously I’m gutted to lose, but it is what it is. I’ll be back on the practice board and will just keep working hard. “I will take this into Graz next weekend and hopefully go one better, but congratulations to Gary, he was absolutely brilliant.”

Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries withdraw from Austrian Darts Open

Gary Anderson and Luke Humphries will not be in action this weekend at the Austrian Darts Open in Graz. The PDC reports that the two World Darts Championship winners have withdrawn due to personal reasons.

Anderson just last weekend won the European Darts Grand Prix in Sindelfingen, while Humphries managed to win the German Darts Grand Prix in Munich in early April. Both players are already certain of qualifying for the European Darts Championship later this year, so they can safely skip a Euro Tour tournament.

Draw revealed for Austrian Darts Open 2024: Luke Littler opens vs host nation qualifier

Due to the cancellation of these players, Krzysztof Ratajski and Joe Cullen have gained seeded status, and will enter from the second round. The two vacant spots will be filled by Ricky Evans and Richard Veenstra, the two highest-ranked players on the reserve list.

The Austrian Darts Open 2024 will be played from April 26 to 28. It will be the tenth edition of this tournament, which was held for the first time back in 2012. The Austrian Darts Open in 2012 was also the first ever Euro Tour tournament. Justin Pipe won the tournament. After that, Michael van Gerwen (2013, 2017, 2019 and 2022), Vincent van der Voort (2014), Phil Taylor (2016) and Jonny Clayton (2018 and 2023) also managed to capture this title.
