Your guide to Cunard’s newest luxury ship Queen Anne

Cunard, synonymous with traditional and luxurious cruising, harks back to the golden age of travel. Now Cunard’s new ship Queen Anne has sailed onto the scene – this is what you need to know.

In association with:

Iglu Cruise

Cunard’s Queen Anne cruise ship will celebrate her maiden voyage on a sailing to Lisbon on May 3, 2024.

The much-anticipated vessel – the line’s 249th! – will join fellow Cunard cruise ships Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth on the high seas.

We’ve rounded up everything you need to know about the ship and how to get your hands on the best Cunard cruise deals.

Cunard Queen Anne ship exterior

Where is Queen Anne being built?

Queen Anne was built in Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice, Italy. The Cunard cruises vessel celebrated its momentous keel laying in September 2022, its funnel lifting in April 2023 and on May 3, 2023, Queen Anne was floated out for the first time – an important milestone that sees the floating hotel touching the water for the very first time.

When will Queen Anne sail?

The Queen Anne maiden voyage will take place on May 3, 2024, and last for seven nights. The (now sold-out) Cunard cruise from Southampton will sail to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon via La Coruña. It will arrive back in the UK on May 10.

Guests on the Queen Anne maiden voyage – the first of many Cunard cruises in 2024 – will enjoy a spectacular sail away party, a Queen Anne Celebration Ball, Maiden Voyage Gala Dinner and nightly Royal Court Theatre performances.

How big is Queen Anne?

Cunard’s Queen Anne has a gross registered tonnage of 113,000. There are 14 decks, two swimming pools and 15 restaurants onboard.

On Cunard Queen Anne cruises, as onboard the rest of the fleet, guests can enjoy a dedicated restaurant corresponding to each accommodation category all plating up breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Elsewhere cuisines include Mediterranean, Pan-Asian, pub grub, tapas and steak plus plenty of healthy options, and of course, Cunard’s famous afternoon tea.

Is Queen Anne bigger than Queen Mary 2?

Queen Anne is smaller than Queen Mary 2 which has a tonnage of 150,000. However, the latter only has 13 decks and six restaurants but it does have four swimming pools.

How many passengers on Cunard Queen Anne?

Queen Anne has capacity for 3,000 passengers and 1,225 crew.

Despite her smaller size, Queen Anne will carry around 300 more passengers than Queen Mary 2 on Cunard 2024 and beyond (the latter having capacity for 2,691).

Is Cunard’s Queen Anne an ocean liner?

Queen Anne is not an ocean liner. The only remaining ocean liner in the world is Queen Mary 2.

Ocean liners were built with the primary purpose of transporting travellers between continents and were built for speed in a pre-air travel age, they also carried cargo, such as mail. However contemporary cruise ships cater for the modern, leisure traveller and are more like hotels at sea, offering a wealth of entertainment and covering shorter distances in one stretch.

How much do Cunard cruises cost?

There are three types of Cunard Fares: Early Saver Fares, Saver Fares and the Cunard Fare.

Early Saver Fares

Early Saver Fares are designed for travellers who prefer to plan their Cunard cruises well in advance and generally offer the lowest prices available, making them attractive to budget-conscious cruisers.

However, Early Saver Fares come with some restrictions, such as charges for changes or cancellations, limited availability, no choice of individual stateroom, second priority for upgrades and no shuttle bus inclusions.

Saver Fares

Similar to Early Saver Fares, Saver Fares tend to be priced competitively and may have specific restrictions and conditions that passengers need to be aware of. While they generally offer good value for money, passengers have less flexibility when it comes to modifying their bookings or may face charges for cancellations or changes. They also require full payment at the time of booking.

Cunard Fare

Cunard Fare is a more flexible fare option and typically offers a range of additional benefits compared to the Early Saver and Saver Fares. Advantages include such benefits as the ability to choose stateroom location and category, a shuttle bus, priority in selecting dining times and seating, and flexibility in changing or cancelling bookings with reduced fees or penalties.

Ahoy there!

Cunard to name new cruise ship Queen Anne; debut set for 2024

Ashley Kosciolek

Cunard Line's 249th ship -- its first in more than a decade -- will be named Queen Anne, the line revealed during a brief broadcast on YouTube Tuesday.

"The name 'Queen Anne' celebrates Cunard 's rich heritage, royal history and refined status -- joining a luxury contemporary fleet now honoring the names of each Queen Regnant over the last millennium," the line said in a statement.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

"It is so exciting that the fourth ship of the fleet will be named after Queen Anne ," said Kate Williams, a British historian, author and television presenter who assisted the line with the decision. "[Queen Anne] has a fascinating tale to tell -- one of queenship, unity of developing constitutional monarchy, a golden age of the arts. She was an inspiring woman, wildly popular with her people. She should be celebrated."

The 113,000-ton vessel, which is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy, is the line's first new ship since Cunard introduced Queen Elizabeth in 2010. Set to carry 3,000 passengers, Queen Anne will not only be the newest in the fleet; it will also become the largest when it debuts.

Although it offered no specifics, the line said the new ship will be a mix of "tradition and contemporary luxury," including reimagined signature spaces, as well as some new dining, entertainment and cultural options -- all presented with Cunard's White Star Service. The ship will feature an updated livery, as well.

cunard cruises queen anne 2024

"I am absolutely delighted to welcome Queen Anne, the fourth ship to Cunard's fleet," said Sture Myrmell, president of Carnival U.K., which operates Cunard Line. "This marks a very special moment in Cunard's 182-year history and showcases Cunard's exciting global plans for the future."

The vessel, which was originally slated to launch this year, will instead debut in early 2024, following COVID-19-related shipyard delays. Voyages will go on sale in May 2022; itinerary details have not been released.

Cunard has also not yet named a godmother, but in keeping with the tradition, it will likely be a member of The Royal Family. Of the line's three other current vessels, two -- Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth -- were christened by HRM Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Victoria's godmother is HRH Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

HRM Queen Mary (wife of HRM King George V) and Queen Elizabeth II, respectively, served as godmothers to iconic ships Queen Mary, which is docked as a floating hotel in Long Beach (and recently received $5 million from the port for critical repairs to save the structure), and Queen Elizabeth 2, now a floating hotel and nightclub in Dubai .

Cunard officially welcomes new ship queen anne with ceremony at fincantieri shipyard.

VALENCIA, Calif. , April 19, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- She's the next in a fine line for Cunard, and today ( April 19 ), Queen Anne officially joined the luxury cruise line's iconic fleet during a historic handover ceremony in Italy .

Cunard took ownership of their stunning 3,000-guest ship during a traditional handover ceremony at the Fincantieri Marghera shipyard in Venice – where master shipbuilders have been constructing the luxurious vessel.

The event was attended by Italian Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy , Adolfo Urso , and Italian Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani .

Katie McAlister , President of Cunard; Paul Ludlow , President of Carnival UK; Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri; Luigi Matarazzo , General Manager of the Fincantieri Merchant Ships Division; and Marco Lunardi , Fincantieri Shipyard Director, were also present.

Queen Anne , the 249th ship to sail under the Cunard flag – and the third built by Fincantieri – will now set sail for Southampton ahead of her seven-night maiden voyage to Lisbon on May 3 .

As the newest addition to the Cunard fleet, Queen Anne's design concepts have been founded on heritage, craftsmanship, style, storytelling, and innovation, and the 114,000-ton ship, which spans 14 decks, will offer travelers several breath-taking experiences, and more choices of entertainment, dining, and bars than ever before.

Cunard has previously announced a series of partnerships for Queen Anne , including Le Gavroche at Sea residencies hosted by two Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux , wellness packages curated by Harper's Bazaar UK's beauty experts, and exclusive British Film Institute screenings in The Pavilion.

She will also boast the widest selection of fitness, beauty, thermal, and spa facilities so far seen on a Cunard ship, with her reimagined Mareel Wellness & Beauty proposition heralding a new era of wellbeing at sea.

Katie McAlister , President of Cunard, said: "We are so excited to welcome Queen Anne to our fleet as she completes a remarkable quartet alongside Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth , and Queen Victoria – marking the first time since 1999 that Cunard will have four ships in simultaneous service. We are now fully focused on readying her to welcome guests for her maiden voyage on May 3 before she embarks on a historic British Isles Festival Voyage, including a momentous Naming Ceremony in Cunard's spiritual home of Liverpool on June 3 ."

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, added: "We are very pleased and eager to deliver Queen Anne to Cunard, a pioneering figure in luxury sea travel, renowned for setting new standards in oceanic voyages for over 180 years. This beautiful and iconic ship testifies the longstanding partnership between our two companies, underscoring our shared commitment to excellence and tradition in the maritime industry. Queen Anne , as Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth , the other two ships we built for Cunard, proudly bear Fincantieri's signature, embodying our enduring expertise, reliability, and craftsmanship in shipbuilding. Constructing a liner for such a distinguished shipowner not only reconnects us to our origins but propels us towards the future with a determination to blend tradition and innovation. Fincantieri thus confirms its leadership in the cruise shipbuilding sector, a fundamental pillar of the company's business project, as both the Group's Business Plan and the vitality of the post-pandemic cruise sector clearly show."

While the Traditional Afternoon Tea is complimentary, at additional cost are offered Champagne Afternoon Tea (premium desserts and fresh fruits served with Laurent-Perrier Champagne) and Godiva Chocolate Afternoon Tea (2x cakes and 2x white chocolate scones served with lime marmalade, clotted cream, Tea Forte, Godiva pralines).

In August 2023, Cunard signed an exclusive partnership deal with Michel Albert Roux (1960-born, 2-star Michelin chef) to create Queens Grill Restaurant's Dala Dinner menu as well as a new menu for the Golden Lion Pub. Golden Lion's new menu was slated to be rolled out fleetwide in 2024.

There are four new/exclusive to the Queen Anne ship alternative dining venues/dinner-only restaurants - Aji Wa (Japanese cuisine, with menus reflecting the ship's current itinerary/seasonal deployment), Aranya (traditional Indian cuisine), Tramonto (authentic Mediterranean dishes with African and Arabic influences), and Sir Samuel's (premium seafood and steakhouse restaurant named after Cunard Line's founder Sir Samuel Cunard, 1st Baronet/1787-1865). These are specialty restaurants (reservations are required) with 3-course menus.

Aranya Rstaurant's menu was developed by Cunard Line’s Culinary Development Department (led by Gareth Bowen) in collaboration with master chef Surjan Singh "Jolly" (CEO and Director of the UK-based company Jolly Good Hospitality Ltd and Corporate Culinary Director of the company Speciality Hospitality UK Ltd). The menu features appetizers (Smoked Chilli Pork Belly, Sweet Potato Oats Tikki, Sweet Mini Pea, Mint & Goat's Cheese Quiche), main dishes (Roasted Wild Turbot, Caramelized Slow Roast Asian Beef Short Rib, Cauliflower Mushroom Masala, pot-sealed Welsh Lamb Biryani) and gourmet desserts (Gulab jamun, Passionfruit Hazelnut Nougat Mascarpone Cake; a Malai Kulfi with Lychee, Chaat Masala).

Itineraries

Bookings on Cunard Queen Anne cruises were initially to open in May but were eventually postponed for December 2022. Queen Anne's inaugural season went on sale on Dec 6th (for Cunard World Club/loyalty program members) and on Dec 7th (for general customers).

On May 4, 2022, Cunard announced Queen Anne's inaugural season based on ex-UK roundtrips and homeporting in Southampton England .

The Maiden Voyage (7-night from Southampton to Lisbon/without call ports) was initially scheduled for January 4, 2024. However, in November 2022 Cunard postponed the inaugural cruise to May 3rd (2024) citing supply chain issues affecting the vessel's construction. The new maiden voyage (7-day itinerary from Southampton to Lisbon/Cunard booking code H411N) visits only La Coruna (Spain) .

The liner's original 2024 itinerary program included 32 seaports (visited on departures from Southampton) in Europe (Mediterranean, Baltic) and the Caribbean (via an ex-UK Transatlantic crossing).

  • Between January and March 2024 were scheduled voyages to Iberia and the Canary Islands.
  • In January 2024 had to start a 35-night roundtrip Transatlantic crossing (UK to the Caribbean) visiting the islands Barbados, St Lucia, St Maarten, St Thomas USVI.
  • In March-April 2024 was the 13-night Norwegian Fjords voyage visiting 5 ports in Norway, including Haugesund, Olden, Stavanger.
  • Mediterranean roundtrips from Southampton in 2024 visit ports in Italy (Civitavecchia-Rome), Spain (Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca), Portugal (Lisbon), France (Ajaccio Corsica).

One-way Transatlantic crossings between the UK and Florida USA (Southampton-Fort Lauderdale) were also offered, including a 12-night westbound (with Ponta Delgada Azores) and a 10-night eastbound (with Hamilton Bermuda).

Queen Anne's first World Voyage (108-day Southampton roundtrip) was scheduled for January 2025.

In September 2017 was officially announced the planned addition of a 4th vessel to Cunard's fleet. The investment (EUR 540 million / USD 600 million) was part of the shipowner's/ Carnival Corporation 's fleet expansion program, adding newbuilds to the fleets of its subsidiary companies and travel brands AIDA , Costa , Princess , P&O UK .

Cunard's shipbuilding contract (MoA/memorandum of agreement) with Fincantieri was signed on Sept 25, 2017.

In October 2018, Cunard contracted the company Tihany Design (led by Adam D Tihany) to oversee the interior design works on the newbuild, which back then was planned for inauguration in 2022. Adam Tihany's latest project started with the layouts of the onboard dining venues, including Cunard's traditional "class restaurants" Queens Grill and Princess Grill. Besides Tihany Design, other companies currently involved in this project include the London UK-based David Collins Studio (led by Simon Rawlings) and Richmond International (by Terry McGillicuddy) as well as the Paris France-based SM Desing (by Sybille de Margerie).

The vessel's construction (Marghera yard/hull number 6274) officially started on October 11, 2019, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at Fincantieri's production yard in Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples ). The special event was attended by Simon Palethorpe (Cunard's President), Gilberto Tobaldi (Fincantieri Castellammare Shipyard's Director) and Sam Shendi (British sculptor).

  • Sam Shendi was commissioned to create a unique artwork using as a core element the ship's ever-first piece of metal (the steel-cut) integrated into a sculpture that will be displayed in the Atrium. The Egypt-born Sam Shendi will create the sculpture using contemporary industrial materials, metals (steel and aluminum) and fiberglass.
  • The special ceremony was celebrated with a Grand Dinner held in Naples.

For choosing the cruise liner's name Cunard asked for assistance/research the British historian Kate Williams (1974-born). She is also an author of several British Royal Family-related books, as well as a TV presenter (at BBC Two and BBC4 series) and expert historian who specializes in social, constitutional and royal history. Kate Williams often appears in documentaries and TV and radio discussions themed on British history, literature and culture.

On April 29, 2022, at Castellammare di Stabia shipyard was launched the troncone (hull's forward lower/bow section) with which for the first time the vessel touched the water. The troncone (length 165 m/541 ft, width 35,6 m/117 ft, weight 12402 tons) was then towed by tugboats to Fincantieri's Marghera shipyard ( Venice ) where the boat will be completed.

The vessel's physical construction started on September 8, 2022, with the keel-laying ceremony at Marghera Yard. The ceremony was attended by Carnival UK's management team, as well as Fincantieri and Marghera yard employees. During the special event, into the hull's first keel block, the ship's Master (Captain Inger Klein Thorhauge) welded a unique/newly-minted ceremonial coin, together with an original Queen Anne crown coin.

The ship is powered by four MAK marine diesel engines (model 12V43C) with combined power output 50,4 MW. The propulsion system is based on two ABB Azipods (azimuth thrusters) with combined output 28 MW.

The name (Queen Anne) was officially announced by Cunard in February 2022. The boat's Master (Inger Klein Thorhauge) and some of the public areas were announced in March. Captain Thorhauge is Cunard Line's first female Captain and joined the company in 1997 as Second Officer on MS Vistafjord (1973-built/2017-scrapped as "Oasia", aka "MS Caronia" and "Saga Ruby"). Born in the Faroes, Thorhauge became MS Queen Victoria 's Captain in 2010. Queen Anne's Second Captain is David Hudson (with Cunard since 2006).

Cunard's newest liner (the 249th vessel under Cunard) is named after Anne (1665-1714) - The Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland (1702-1707) and The Queen of Great Britain (1707-1714). During her reign (on May 1, 1707) the kingdoms of England and Scotland were united into Great Britain. In 1714, Queen Anne was succeeded by her second cousin - King George I (1660-1727).

On April 14, 2023, on the superstructure was mounted the funnel, traditionally for Cunard painted in red and black.

The ship was launched/floated out from drydock on May 3, 2023 - exactly 365 days before the Maiden Voyage (May 3rd, 2024, out of Southampton). The special event was attended by Sture Myrmell (Carnival UK's President) and Luigi Matarazzo (Fincantieri's General Manager of the Merchant Ships Division).

In September 2023, Cunard announced Queen Anne's senior officers for the maiden voyage - Inger Klein Thorhauge (Master Captain), Yuliyan Kostov (Deputy Captain), Jon Cammish (Chief Engineer), Robert Howie (Hotel General Manager), and Stuart Smart (Human Resources Manager).

The 16-day North Sea trials were conducted in February 2024, under Captain Inger Thorhauge. The first sea trials included checking, extreme testing, assessing and calibrating all systems (power/engines, propulsion, stabilizers).

MS Queen Anne was officially delivered to Cunard on April 19, 2024, at Fincantieri Marghera. The special ceremony was attended by VIP guests including Adolfo Urso (Italy's Minister for Business and Made in Italy), Luca Ciriani (Italy's Minister for Parliamentary Relations), Katie McAlister (Cunard's President), Paul Ludlow (Carnival UK's President), Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri's CEO) and Luigi Matarazzo.

MS Queen Anne ship's christening ceremony is currently scheduled for June 3, 2024, to be held dockside in during the celebratory "The British Isles Festival Voyage". The special event will take place short after sunrise and will be hosted by Mathew James Willis (1983-born English musician/singer/songwriter, TV personality, actor, co-founder and co-vocalist of Busted/pop-punk band) and Emma Louise Willis (1976-born English TV broadcaster).

The next image is the July 2023-released by Cunard Queen Anne ship's cutaway made by Dominik Bulka (Wroclaw Poland-born illustrator and graphic designer). The image showcases many of the ship's signature venues and public spaces.

In September 2023, Cunard signed a 3-year partnership with BFI UK for MS Queen Anne. By the deal, in the period 2024-2027, in all passengers' staterooms and at The Pavilion (top-deck outdoor Cinema/LED screen) will be shown short films and blockbuster movies (10 every month). The Queen Anne-exclusive partnership deal was signed by Katie McAlister (Cunard's President) and Francesca Vinti (BFI's Director of Fundraising and Enterprise). BFI (British Film Institute) is a 1933-founded charitable organization promoting and preserving the UK's film production and distribution. BFI is funded by the National Lottery (1994-established) and is also sponsored by DCMS (UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport).

Here’s how major cities may look in the future

cunard cruises queen anne 2024

No one knows exactly what major cities will look like in the future, but it is SUPER fun to imagine.

Personally, we still like to think it will be EXACTLY how the Jetsons promised. We’ve already named our robot maid and chosen the colour of our flying car.

As for travelling BACK in time, you can do that in a city just by checking out the architecture of some of its iconic buildings.

From London’s royal residences and Rio’s favelas to New York’s skyscrapers and Bangkok’s superstructures, the history of our urban centres is writ large in bricks and mortar, glass and steel.

Budget Direct   has combined the two, visualising six of the world most iconic cities, showcasing what it would look like if all their most ambitious architectural projects had become a reality.

And the results are fascinating.

New York City

“The skyline of New York is a monument of a splendour that no pyramids or palaces will ever equal or approach.” So said Ayn Rand in her classic 1943 novel,  The Fountainhead .

Most would agree that Manhattan’s silhouette is something special, and the city’s architectural ambition shows no signs of letting up – it’s already the  second-tallest overall after Hong Kong . And should projects like the U-shaped  Big Bend and the jaw-dropping  Times Squared 3015  come to light, the results will be something to behold.

In Bangkok, life is lived in the streets. The city’s vernacular architecture, most iconically represented by the shophouse, is small-scale. Even its older statement-making structures – from the Royal Grand Palace complex to various beautiful temples ( wat ) – tend to be low-rise.

But since the unregulated building frenzy of the 1980s, the city now has nearly 600 skyscrapers. While the future will inevitably see more high-rises,  cycle lanes cantilevered from Skytrain tracks , green spaces beneath highways and  communities elevated above rising water levels  all might have a place in the new ‘Venice of the East.’

Dubai practically  is  its skyline. This city-state seems to be as much about visible impact as it is about liveability. But the notion that Dubai emerged in the desert out of nothing isn’t quite right. Its older fabric includes the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, which dates back to the 1890s.

Since the start of its urban expansion nearly a century later, Dubai has gone stratospheric; projects that would be architectural pie-in-the-sky elsewhere have come true here. And the Burj Khalifa is really just the start. Perhaps the most stunning of Dubai’s potential future developments are the 75km  Arabian Canal  and the  Dynamic Tower , all 420m of which will rotate.

The Moscow skyline broods. At least, its older elements do, with the likes of onion-domed St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Kremlin, so familiar from spy movies and Cold War thrillers. But Moscow has moved on – or up.

The Soviet-era Seven Sisters were supposedly constructed by Stalin to compete with New York, and in 1992 work commenced on the Moscow City International Business Center project, which includes three of Europe’s tallest buildings. But even they would be dwarfed by Norman Foster’s outrageously ambitious  Crystal Island project , which will be the largest structure on earth – if it’s ever built.

Rio de Janeiro

Between Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer, Rio is one of those instantly recognisable cities. And with classic buildings like the Copacabana Palace Hotel juxtaposed with modern masterpieces like the Museum of Modern Art, the city isn’t lacking for architectural variety.

The future of Rio sees it making use of its coastal location for marine farms and other  island-based developments , while urban planners reckon that  futuristic favela re-designs  can provide healthy, walkable and self-organised living environments.

London is royal, London is religious and London is righteous – at least, that’s the story told by such iconic landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. But the capital city has also become a haven for contemporary architecture.

You can give them quirky nicknames, but skyscrapers such as 30 St. Mary Axe (‘The Gherkin’) and 20 Fenchurch Street (‘The Walkie Talkie’) mean business. While the future is bound to hold a bevy of new, modern skyscrapers like  Spire London , we’d like to see the  Endless Vertical City  come to life.

The Eiffel Tower, built for the 1889 World Fair, might be the most recognisable symbol of Paris, but it’s far from the only one. The city’s incredible pre-war architecture is on display, from Notre Dame and the Arc de Triomphe to the gorgeous buildings of Montmartre.

And while more contemporary developments like the Centre Pompidou can hold their own, will ‘ farmscrapers’ and ‘smart’ green buildings  dominate this iconic skyline in the future?

With historic buildings planted squarely alongside impossible-sounding new developments, our cities are about to get a lot more interesting. What might the future of your city look like?
