Of the new single, was written and produced by Gabriel, recorded at his Real World Studios in Wiltshire and The Beehive in London, and features Tom Cawley on piano. The orchestral arrangement, by Ed Shearmur, was recorded at British Grove Studios in London with a number of players who previously featured in the New Blood Orchestra.   ” ‘Playing For Time’ is a song that I have been working on for a long time and have performed live, without lyrics, so some people may be familiar with it. It’s been an important song for me. It’s about time, mortality and memories and the idea that each of us has a planet full of memories which get stashed inside the brain.   It is more of a personal song about how you assemble memories and whether we are prisoners of time or whether that is something that can actually free us. I do think it’s good to push yourself towards more bold or interesting experiences because then you will have richer memories to feed you when you get to my age. You also get taught by every meaningful experience that you go through.”

Peter Gabriel performing ‘So,’ his biggest-selling album, in Las Vegas concert

peter gabriel so tour

The tour that finally brings Peter Gabriel to Las Vegas is, almost ironically, something you would expect on the Strip: his biggest-selling and best-known album ("So") played start to finish, following a popular drift in the concert industry.

"I've never done a retro tour before," he concedes of today's show at Planet Hollywood Resort. "Robert Plant and I were always teasing each other (about) who would be the first to succumb to the reformed old band thing."

But Gabriel is rarely so predictable, and the forward-thinking musician always seemed only a degree or two removed from bigger things in Las Vegas. A proposed idea for a high-tech, adult theme park called Real World never got off the ground, but sounds in retrospect a lot like the Electric Daisy Carnival.

"The original Real World idea was a mixture of science and art, and that's still something that fascinates me," he says. "The idea of mixing some traditional handmade cultures with futuristic technology is something that I think is of the future. This handmade, high-tech approach is going to see a rebirth."

Robert Lepage, who helmed "Ka" for Cirque du Soleil, also staged two of Gabriel's tours ("Secret World" in 1993-94 and "Growing Up" in 2003-04). Mark Fisher, the set designer for Cirque's "Michael Jackson: The Immortal," was Gabriel's collaborator on a Cirque-like show at London's Millennium Dome in 2000.

During the boom years, was he ever invited to bring any of his big ideas to Las Vegas? "There've been a couple of very loose discussions but it's never really evolved," he said Sunday, while waiting to perform at the Red Rocks amphitheater near Denver.

"I am actually planning another show after this one," he added. "I'm trying to get a show that will travel without me, but will be quite an interesting and spectacular thing if I can pull it off. And if we can get some momentum behind it, Vegas might be a great first location to test it out."

Fans will have to wait for further details. "Well, it's all in my head yet, and I haven't yet unloaded it to my collaborators," he says, beyond the fact that it doesn't involve circus performance.

He's a little busy now anyway. The "So" tour celebrates the 25th anniversary (even if a year late) of the album that shook MTV and dragged Gabriel from "art rock" to mainstream popularity.

"I think we were pop stars for a couple of weeks," he says of the days immortalized by John Cusack holding his boom box aloft to play "In Your Eyes" to Ione Skye in "Say Anything."

"Then the casual listeners who come around for the hits sort of went off to the next hit maker, and we were left with the core of fans that have probably been there for the other stuff, and who don't get too bored when you're in the middle of 'The Family and the Fishing Net.' "

More devout fans have no fear that Gabriel's experimental nature is intact. He opens the show with a song-in-progress, part of "an acoustic starter," followed by "an electric main dish (including 'Fishing Net') and 'So' is served as the dessert."

Watching Brian Wilson perform the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" made Gabriel see the excitement of a classic album performed in its entirety from a fan's eye. As with so many tours with this hook, it boils down to a neglected song or two and preserving the original order of the tracks.

"That's something that I did think was interesting," Gabriel noted, admitting to a perfectionist's tendency of "spending hours, or days trying to get the sequence right, looking at rhythms and keys. In those days I would have cassettes of just the beginnings and endings of songs" so he could "try all the different permutations of one to the other."

"Sometimes I miss that about (today's marketplace) of 'just download this song or add it.' You often found that as a listener, some of the tracks I liked the least were some of the ones I grew to like best."

And while Gabriel's running joke with Plant obviously involved the bands Genesis and Led Zeppelin, Gabriel has in fact reunited with musicians who backed most of his solo work: bass wizard Tony Levin, guitarist David Rhodes, keyboardist David Sancious and drummer Manu Katche.

"It felt strange and very familiar at the same time when we started," he said. "It is strange the way relationships just carry on exactly the same way they were really, except maybe you hope you've mellowed and are a tiny bit wiser for having lived longer. But I wouldn't put a lot of money on it."

In that spirit, Gabriel says that having a second go-round as a family man - having children ages 4 and 11 with second wife Meabh Flynn - makes one "very conscious how privileged you are" and more determined to enjoy it.

He plans to follow the tour with a year's sabbatical, traveling the world with his family. "It's something I meant to do when I was 50, but I'm running 12 years behind."

Q&A: Peter Gabriel Reflects on His 1986 Landmark Album ‘So’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Peter Gabriel has never been one to look backward. He’s refused all offers to go on a highly lucrative Genesis reunion tour, and he has yet to write a memoir, release a box set or create a documentary about his long career. This fall, however, he has agreed to release a deluxe edition of his 1986 landmark album So . The disc transformed him from an art rocker with a cult following into one of the biggest pop stars in the world. MTV played his video “Sledgehammer” on what seemed like a never-ending loop, and radio fell in love with “In Your Eyes,” “Don’t Give Up” and “Big Time.” He’s about to launch a North American tour where he performs the disc “Back To Front” along with other cuts from his solo career.

Rolling Stone spoke to Gabriel about the legacy of So , plans for the tour and when fans can finally expect to hear a follow-up to his 2002 disc Up .

Peter Gabriel Hits the Big Time With ‘So’: Rolling Stone’s 1987 Cover Story

Why do you think So managed to reach a much broader audience than your previous albums?   There was less sort of esoteric songwriting. I think they were simpler songs in some ways, but I think we caught a wave. They were done with passion and we had a really good team working on them. Then, of course, we had things like the “Sledgehammer” video, which helped enormously. It got us a wider audience. Also, the one concession I agreed to was to place an actual photo of myself on the cover rather than the usual obscured stuff I had been doing.

You also gave this one an actual title. It was named, yeah. That was a reluctant choice. In the old days I would go through my vinyl and identity each record by the picture, not by the title. I always liked that. In some ways, I’m just a visual person. It was the idea to just do away with titles. Give the pictures space to breathe and speak for themselves. But, of course, it caused confusion in the marketplace. The American record company, Geffen, got so fed up with me that they said they weren’t going to release my fourth record unless I gave it some title. So, it was called Security in America and it had no title everywhere else in the world.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

The next time out I decided to go for the anti-title. There’s only two letters: So. It can be more a piece of graphic, if you like, as opposed to something with meaning and intention. And that’s what I’ve done ever since.

When you made So , did you try and make it more accessible, or that was just sort of a natural development? I think that was a bunch of songs that were there at the time. With “Sledgehammer,” everyone thinks, “Oh, he must have created that to get a hit.” And it wasn’t done that way. In fact, [bassist] Tony Levin reminded me that he was packing his bags to go home, and I called him back into the studio, saying “I’ve got this one idea that maybe we can fool around with for the next record – but I like the feel.” That was “Sledgehammer.” It was late in the day and we just fell into the groove, landed a beautiful drum track on it, a great bass line and it all came together.

I think the video really helped get it to a different audience. I’ve not had many intersections with mass culture, so that was one occasion where that happened.

Did you see “In Your Eyes” as a special song when you made it? I knew it had some heart in it, and I loved the Youssou N’Dour bit at the end. We should have put out the longer version, but we had to cut it ’cause of time constraints. But it felt so heartfelt and, yeah, I I felt it was a special song, the like of which I hadn’t heard before in the way it integrated the different influences and tried putting together this love lyric, which was, in part, based on this African idea of having an ambiguous love song that can be human love, man to woman, or man to God.

Do you think the famous John Cusack scene in Say Anything has played a big role in keeping that song alive over the past 20 years? I think it definitely gave it a second life, because now it’s so often parodied in comedy shows and it is one of the modern day Romeo and Juliet balcony clichés. I’ve talked to John Cusack about that. We’re sort of trapped together in a minuscule moment of contemporary culture.

There’s a great scene on South Park where one of the kids serenades a girl with a jukebox, but he plays “Shock the Monkey” instead. [Huge booming laugh] Yeah, that made me laugh too.

Hear Sheryl Crow Team Up With Peter Gabriel on New Rendition of 'Digging in the Dirt'

Peter gabriel's new song 'this is home' inspired by motown and…skrillex, billie eilish, peter gabriel, bootsy collins and other 'artist for action' raise voices to end gun violence.

At a certain point did you feel that the “Sledgehammer” video got too big? MTV played it just a ridiculous amount of times. Yeah, I think it was the most played video on MTV, and still is today. But I was trying to get some income from it, which is another battle, another story . . . I don’t know. At the time, I was still fighting the ex-Genesis label, so to have a new label that was bigger than ex-Genesis . . . I was quite pleased about that.

You didn’t release a follow-up to So for six years. Do you think that was a mistake? You sort of lost some momentum there. I’m sure commercially it wasn’t the smartest thing to do, but I’ve never really worried about that. And to be honest, I think one of the reasons I’m still lucky enough to put out records and have audiences come to shows is cause I haven’t played that game very well. I think that consumer culture tends to be very hungry. It can’t get enough of you for a very short time and then your taste gets boring and they spit you out and take the next new thrill. And so, while it was never a predetermined strategy, I would probably recommend it to artists now if they want a long career. If you got something worth saying, if you’ve got something to put out, don’t worry about what the record company tells you. Take your time.

Why are calling the tour “Front to Back?” It was just a title in the sense that it’s the first time I’ve gone retro. I was thinking of maybe doing some new stuff and old stuff, so that was the front bit . . . It was the fact that you’re pulling something back, because in a way you can never repeat history. You can sort of spiral back to it, but you’re standing at another point in time, even if you’re a observing as fully and as accurately as you can, you’re actually in a different space, time and certainly physical body then you were at that time.

It’s a different animal and I think the best thing is to sort of to acknowledge that and yet still work with some of the elements that you thought were good and strong and liked at that time. So, for example, the live show, I had this idea with camera booms; to replace the cameras with lights, but still have them have the freedom of movement. And at the time it was quite futuristic, now it’s quite retro. But because there are people operating it, it will have, I think, a different mood than if it was robots. So, we will be revisiting, but I think it will feel different.

How will the show be structured? Currently, I’m planning to do the other stuff in the first half. I don’t know if we’ll take a break or not. And then do the whole So record from start to finish.

Are there certain obscure songs you’re thinking about playing in the first half of the show that you haven’t done in a long time? I don’t think its just going to be sort of Gabriel-light, if you like. For example “The Family and the Fishing Net” is one that a lot of fans will never like really, but I want to play that. I’ve got an A, B and C list at the moment so were going to try them all in rehearsal next week and make some decisions.

What’s your plan when the tour ends? Will you take it to Europe? Well actually, what I am doing after this tour is something I meant to do a long time ago, which is a sabbatical year with my family. And we will be trying not to spend too much time in airports, at the same time visiting quite a few different countries and places of natural or scientific interest. We’re going to be following up on some of the interesting invitations I’ve had over the years and never had the time to follow through on. So I’m really excited about it and we’re looking forward to it.

Next month is the exact 10-year anniversary of your last studio album. Are you working toward a new one?   Well, I’m definitely going to have this sabbatical. There’s this piece of music I just did for this film Reluctant Fundamentalist which is a sort of this eight-minute piece. And I worked on that with this Pakistani buddy of mine Atif Aslam, who is actually a wonderful singer and has got one of the finest falsettos I’ve heard since Jeff Buckley.  That is the last thing I’ve just finished and really enjoyed.  But there’s been quite a few ideas in the can, but probably, it will take me another year when I do get back next September.

Is your next disc still going to be called I/O , or will it be a different project? Well that was the title. I mean the advantage, or disadvantage, of putting out the title out so early, as it turns out, before the record is done, I can see if I still like it when we’ve got the appropriate collection of songs attached. But I still quite like the title, but I think its been used in other things since, but that’s OK.

Peter Gabriel: SO, Back to Front Tour

pgso

The TD Garden arena in Boston hummed. It was quiet, as the fans filed into the stadium to wait for Peter Gabriel to commence the performance. Mumbled voices and music fans of all ages were present. There was a positive tension, an anticipation, as if we were waiting for the unveiling of an art piece. We were.

Peter's instrumentals from Passion Sources/Real World music were playing. The footage of apartheid was running. This tone of seriousness was highlighted with joy and respect for Peter Gabriel's music. "He's on my bucket list" said one fan. "I have the UP DVD" "I heard he does a great stage set." Even the event staff were talking about Mr. Gabriel's music history. "I loved Gabriel in Genesis, one of the best bands ever back then." A fan who's been to many concerts pointed out to me that often the crew wear the same color uniform scrubs so that Peter knows who they are against the crowd. This tour they were wearing purple. Last tour was bright orange. I've seen Peter Gabriel three times now. First, the original SO tour back when the record was released (NY), the Growing UP tour at the Meadowlands arena in NJ, and this SO anniversary tour in Boston. So much time in music and life has passed so quickly for all of us. Peter told Billboard and The Guardian that after this tour, he will take a holiday with his family, so these performances were special events in time to the listening audience, myself included.

"Change It" appeared on the video screen. Peter walked onto the stage without announcement to address the crowd. What is the first thing he said?

"Hi There!"

Did he mean to be reminiscent of the hit single, "Big Time"?

He explained to us that Ane Brun was sick and the talented Jennie Abrahamson was going to perform tonight. This performance brought a cello and high notes, with piano picking up the tempo while the vocals floated sweetly above the first song, "In This Life to Live". Excited to be here tonight, for the first time in Boston, Jennie introduced, Amy Abrahamson. A first single off their album hailed tribute songs to those who struggle for a chance. "Hard to Come By" were the leading lyrics in this track.  They mentioned that the vocals were done exclusively for this show. Their presence reminded me of Alyssa Graham, a soul singer that we reviewed on this site earlier this year.  A cover song by Thom Yorke, "Atoms For Peace" was announced, and as the cellist started playing, something was dropped on the floor. It took a while to find it, but the show stayed on track with applause at the resolve. They closed the set with "Falling" from their latest album. Some slow steady cello work with spare piano ensued, which made this song all about the timing.  They took their bow together. A beautiful and interesting performance, they later joined Peter Gabriel and the band for the rest of the set.

The intermission was an interesting mix of Peter Gabriel covers. "Big Time" in soul version that could almost be compared to Louis Armstrong, had a fan singing by himself in the stairwell. "Talk To Me' a capella came through, while Peter and his crew were walking around during the last of the set up. Fans were making mock row boats in the aisles during "Mercy Street, " which is what he did for a stage set on the UP tour. These were serious Gabriel fans with the history of past tours in their experience. The stadium was slowly filling up, but the event staff said it was not sold out. Monday nights are hard to get people out to the stadium shows, they remarked.

The performance at the TD Garden, Boston was recorded in full, and can be purchased for viewing at www.petergabriel.com .

Peter came out to the stage and announced there would be three parts to the show. 1. Unfinished, acoustics. 2. "The electric bit.". 3. The entire SO album, uninterrupted.

For the unfinished, acoustic piece, he commented, "The process of making something, is just as interesting as the finished product."

Peter Gabriel's "Back To Front" Tour Performance Review, TD Garden, Boston September 24, 2012

This is an unfinished new song played by Tony Levin and Peter Gabriel. It was a deeply soulful vocal from Gabriel with some traditional piano arrangements. A great opener, it helped the crowd settle in for what was to come, and was an honor to hear something new from Gabriel.

"Come Talk To Me"

From one of my favorite albums, US , the reaching out of the communicator, with stretched phone rings and cords, was tempered from the Secret World Live tour, to a bright rolling version with this Back To Front series. Although not as intense as the US recording, the Back To Front rendition yielded light and hope, a resolution of sorts.

Following Gabriel throughout his career, many fans know the US album was recorded during a very difficult time in his life. Written for his daughter, who later sang it with him during the UP tour, there is a sense of relief in the Back To Front performance, a joy in the passing of time with positive outcomes. The moment has broken out through the silence.

"Shock The Monkey"

The stage set showed a video of beginning life, "It began like this." The "evolution" speaks. A fan yells out "PETER!" and "Shock the Monkey" begins. This was a deep soul, almost jazz, version of the award winning block buster hit that swept the 1980's with song and video.

Mainstream fans know Peter Gabriel for this household iconic song, but cult fans find this just one chapter in his vast catalog. I'm a cult fan for sure. The backup vocalists did a great job of emitting "SHOCK" at the right times, with audience lead clapping, there was a standing ovation at the end.

"Family Snapshot"

This song is a masterpiece. This one track could be turned into a film. Peter Gabriel never turns away from real life content and his in depth exploration of the human condition brought him to explore the inner world of a political assassin. It is documented that Peter got the inspiration of the song by reading  Arthur Bremmer's book, "An Assassins Diary" ( www.songfacts.com ). His lyrics tell the thoughts of the killer moment by moment, including the motives which are not hate or political issues, but just to be noticed, famous, timed to be remembered - on the evening news. "I don't really hate you, I don't care what you do, we were made for each other, me and you ... I want to be somebody, you are like that too ... if you don't get given you learn to take, and I will take you." My favorite part of this song is when Peter bellows, "And I let the bullet fly ...." On the recorded track, Peter's voice is the launched bullet and the ping tonations of the music afterwards project the object into mid-air.

When Peter Gabriel played "Family Snapshot" on the Back To Front Tour, Tony Levin commanded a red bass and brown cloak, while Peter played the scene from his piano. I watched him do this on the UP tour as well. The song remains powerful this way, and although Peter's vocal range did not release that historic bullet, the performance was powerful nonetheless, and the target was hit, straight on.

"Digging In The Dirt"

This 'electric bit' started off as just that. Floating lights gave the arena space an eerie effect. As in the rest of the US album, the power is given to the people and they seemed to follow the lights as if in a trance. The set beckoned Gabriel every time he jumped, it changed. Tony Levin, the master, had full control over the pace of things, while strobes and angular lights continued to bend the visuals. This gave me an idea for another article, IMPACT. The IMPACT of Peter Gabriel, but that is for another post.

"For each one of us, there is a secret world." - Peter Gabriel at the TD Garden, Boston. So, Back To Front Tour.

"Secret World"

Imagine Tony Levin spinning with his brown cloak wrapped around him like a sage's dream-coat. Mandela lights are spinning and Peter joins him in a duet, the lights slow down into a pattern, then the moon tambourine comes out. The bass solo was so intense, it dominated as Levine hung low over the crowd from the stage. The Abrahamson's provided back-up, which added a lovely sound to the vocals.

"The Family And The Fishing Net"

"An interpretation of marriage" - Peter Gabriel at the TD Garden, Boston, So, Back To Front Tour.

With the lights pulsing like a raw heartbeat, this was all David Rhodes' guitar and Peter Gabriel's piano.  Rhodes scratched out the artful notes that provided the content for the framed pictures that Peter painted in his vocals. It was fragmented and intense, "the body and the flesh" was delivered in such a way that the stadium was a bit off guard, as should be, after the depth of un-nerving that this song brings.

"No Self Control"

pgstageweb

Glittering backgrounds and Peter at the piano set a fantasy mood as faces appeared and disappeared on the screen while Peter let out a progressive howl. Back into the Genesis and the days of 'melting'. Brilliant.

"Solsbury Hill"

During the UP tour, Peter was riding a bicycle around the circular stage for this song of joy. The crowd leads the chant of the heartbeat, 'Boom Boom Boom.' Here in Boston on the Back to Front SO tour, the circular theme remained, however, Mr. Gabriel seemed to be a storyteller this go around. He motioned, acted out many of the lyrics with his hands. "Which connection I should 'cut' ... he made a hand chop with his arm, 'liberty she pirouettes' and he spun around ... He seemed to be more focused on the message of the song this tour.

This made sense to me, given that the song was written as a declaration of independence and remains so, now that he is taking a break from touring. There was a determination of assertion in Peter's statement, 'You can KEEP my things, they've come to take me home ..." Circles seem to be a constant in the presentation, Peter walked in circles, the band caught on and he was joined by Tony Levin and David Rhodes, circling, engaging the crowd, as they played their instruments. There was joy in the ending, as the trio skipped in circular formation with the crowd cheering, light as air, with all intentions, back to front - independent.

Bravo, Mr. Gabriel!

"Solsbury Hill" was the first single that Peter Gabriel released after his break from Genesis. It is named after an area in Bath, England, where Peter used to walk, or jog and legend has it that a temple was built there to honor Apollo, the god of light, music, and poetry. The 7/4 rhythm with the addition of instruments by verse makes this classic build to an enormous crescendo both in recordings and especially live. (Sources: Songfacts, Allmusic and Peter Gabriel.com)

"The Washing of The Water"

The stadium went black. Imagine just Peter at his piano, "so deep so wide, will you take me on your back for a ride ..."  Tony Levin on the upright bass, with David Rhodes on guitar, accompained this amazing soul searching ballad. The plea for the river to heal starts the process of awareness, which puts the narrator in a position of strength already. Peter took his time to sing this properly, even when interrupted by cheers from the crowd. From the US album, beautiful.

Classic expectations were met with this hit number. "Red Rain" was beautifully represented with red flood lights and 'showers' of red and orange effects that really looked like red rain. The crowd went wild. The song escalated into a magnificent take on this familiar tune, by deepening the vocals and the guitar work was very astute.

"Sledgehammer"

Marching around with power and control, Peter lead everyone dancing to this inspiring classic. This hit is still as unique as it was in the 1980's. Making fists that slam together, people were actually doing 'the bump' in the audience!  During the lyric, "...kick the habit, shed my skin ..." a guy took off his shirt and tied up his head in it. Fans were just happy and being themselves! The trio formation of Gabriel, Rhodes and Levin, had some Mo-Town looking steps going on, while the backup vocals an dual drummers kept the time very well.

"Don't Give Up"

Sounding just like the recording, the depth of the instrumentation in this was superb, with even more interest given the live percussion by Manu Katche'. The crowd generously accepted Jennie Abrahamson for Kate Bush's part of the duet. A blue background was the scene, as Peter stood while Jennie slowly approached and Peter walked away. This told the true story of quiet strength. Peter's pensiveness and tentative stance, had a layer of hope, because he was willing to be vulnerable and strong, and accepted the support of his counterpart, even though he did not collapse into it. "That river flowing" had Peter walk to the top of the stage, hit the high note, 'We're proud of who we are" sang Jennie. In the end they stood at the edge of the crowd, holding hands, which lead the crowd singing, "don't give up, don't give up, don't give up ..." There was a reggae vibe at the close and some soulful scat vocals. The standing ovation on this song was well deserved.

"Hear That Voice Again"

You never know what to expect at a Peter Gabriel concert with any tour. UP had him bouncing around in a big clear ball on stage, while  New Blood  showcased orchestral pieces of his famous songs. "Hear That Voice Again" started off with Gabriel sitting at his piano, while his voice echoed over the crowd, The audience was again, quiet. The intro to this upbeat song had a different impact presented as a piano performance. Then it built up and stayed at its steady pace. All musicians were busy focused on their instruments, Levine, face to face with his bass, Rhodes, cut the edges of the phrasing in guitar work, while Katche' made the high sticking look effortless. Peter nailed the high note in the song's peak.

"What I carry in my heart, brings us so close or so far apart ... only love can make love ..." - Song lyric from "Hear That Voice Again," Peter Gabriel.

"Mercy Street"

"... all of the buildings, all of the cars, were once just a dream in somebody's head ... " - Song lyric from "Mercy Street," Peter Gabriel.

I was waiting to see what would be done with this song. I've seen it during the UP tour with a beautiful boat circling the stage. Gabriel took this deeper into the dream state by opening the song with an acapella piece and then laying on the floor. A set of huge cameras circled his head and he sung the rest of the song from this floor position. The cameras were programmed to scan his face and project it onto the video screens alongside the stage. The screens were a dizzying effect of black and white, like an old Twilight Zone clip and Peter's low groans and howls were perfect for this altered state depiction. This was ingenious and brought the masterpiece multi-instrumental toward the collective by taking it right out of any contact with reality. The audience were left to create their own reality. Brilliant.

"So much larger than life." - Song lyric, from "Big Time," Peter Gabriel.

Gabriel leaned sideways, got off the floor, drank a cup of water and moved on with the show. A fast running video with energy to spare gave the entire band a boost on this very popular number. The crowd were on their feet in an instant and it was joyous relief, highlighted with multi-colored lights, a straight shot of good 80's radio, the way that it should be. Peter found his way back to his piano and the tempo changes were fantastic.

"We Do What We're Told, Milgram's 37"

I was listening to the 1986 demo of this song before the show and the echo percussion stands out for me in the original rendition. Sharp guitar edges cut through the beat, and I was glad to have kept that in mind before I set out to see it live in Boston.

I felt the ground shake during the concert when this song was performed. Milgram's studies were chilling enough, and now to see them symbolized in song verse was intriguing, startling. This live version had a contemporary rock edge, thanks to David Rhodes. The whole band stood in a line like soldiers, singing monotone with one voice. Impact.

"Excellent Birds. This Is The Picture"

Written by Laurie Anderson and Peter Gabriel, this is a signature track for both of them, seeming to reflect their unique styles, but they have a lot in common. The use of percussion, creative sectional arrangements and mindful symbolism permeates.

As I said, core Gabriel fans were at the Boston show for the Back To Front tour. Once the initial beat started for this song, the crowd clapped and immediately rose. The band played in unison standing at the edge of the stage together, using choreographed steps, circle formations and marching in it's timeless rhythm. It was well done.

"In Your Eyes"

The song that rang throughout the 80's and is still so powerful today. This introduced Youssou N'Dour to the mainstream music scene and the world music projects that Peter Gabriel had been immersed in, became household talk. The iconic scene in "Say Anything" was captured on this very Back to Front Tour with the real John Cusack and Peter Gabriel exchanging boom boxes on stage. Read about that here: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2012/10/john-cusack-cameos-at-peter-gabriel-25th-anniversa.html

The live performance of this was everything you'd expect in Gabriel's channel of this euphoric occasion. The crowd sang every word, pausing for Peter to sing the second lines. The inspirational uplifting of the crowd that happens at most shows when this song is played was exactly right. We were filled with the light, the heat, of this great music. Peter and the band lifted their arms, the lights followed the atmosphere upwards and the fans raised their hands to the sky as well. Jennie Abrahamson and Peter did the improv and the response was positive. She seemed to relax by this point in the show and gave it all she had. Peter closed this with his velvet voice, strong and reassuring.

"The resolution, of all the fruitless searches..." - Song lyric from, "In Your Eyes" Peter Gabriel.

"Surprise, Suprise ... We're Back!" The band said. "Thank you very much, we had a very good night tonight!" says Peter Gabriel. "We love you Peter!" shouted a fan.

"The Tower That Ate People"

Electricity filled the room and strobes shocked the crowd. This is the type of performance that is signature Gabriel, to take a song, and make it a theatre art form. He was in his element, as was the band. Prior live shows have shown Gabriel's face melting, running through a bubble, riding a bicycle, climbing a tower and being pulled into a telephone booth. This number had a lighted circular disc slowly fall from the ceiling with running lights to encapsulate Peter, and then a white tower like sheet spun down from it covering him completely. Music as modern art, this is Peter Gabriel.

Tell it like it is (on this land, we cast our hope) Till there's no misunderstanding You make up what you like (we make our home) Man feed machine Machine eat man

-Song lyric from 'The Tower That Ate People," Peter Gabriel.

This song is from the album OVO and was played at the Millenium Concert at the O2 in London, 2000. There is a set of discs and DVD's from this show, but only a limited edition was available in the UK for a short time. Standard editions are still widely available in all countries. To preview or purchase this remarkable album through Amazon, click here .

The stage went red and Gabriel spoke to the audience inspiring them 'all over the world' to "stand up for what you believe in." "We feel the screams of Steven Biko." Everyone in the audience stood as if in salute during this always moving tribute. "You can blow out a candle, but you can't blow out a fire. Once the flames begin to catch, the wind will blow it higher."

What strikes me about Peter Gabriel's music, is what should be an ingredient in all music. When he writes any song, he gives the notes, the tones, the words, space - to let the listeners connect with the message. Using percussions sometimes so sparingly, there is a powerful sense of movement through the crowd. Other songs like 'Shaking The Tree" "In Your Eyes" "Sanicinto" and others, are arranged with the thoughtfulness to allow the audience to connect with the underpinnings in their own way. People are truly moved to the core of what they feel from Peter Gabriel's music. It's quite remarkable if you think about how he reaches people with different styles of music, yet in a similar way. Our writer, Deb Hebert remarked just last week that Peter Gabriel always sings of "love, hope and humanity."

How Peter Gabriel Conquered the World With ‘So’

Between his years as the freaky frontman for Genesis and his early solo outings, Peter Gabriel was already a rock star before making So . But the 1986 album transformed him into something entirely different and completely unexpected — a full-fledged pop star.

After leaving Genesis in 1975, Gabriel reinvented his art-rock approach in a new context, incorporating influences from the burgeoning New Wave and world music scenes over the course of four self-titled albums between 1977 and 1982. But while the funky single “Shock the Monkey” from his fourth album had made the Top 40, it still didn’t prepare him for the heights he would reach next time around.

So was the first album to which Gabriel had ever given an official title. But he gave people a lot more than that to hang onto. Gabriel’s fifth solo record turned out to be his most accessible and radio-friendly without sacrificing an ounce of the artistry he’d displayed on his earlier outings. It earned not only the admiration of the masses and the critics alike, but also four hit singles.

Gabriel had been a soul fan since his youth, but this was the first time he really brought an R&B influence to bear in his music in an overt way. “Sledgehammer,” the first single from So , is a sassy, soulful strut that finds Gabriel with tongue firmly in cheek delivering a series of not-so-subtle sexual metaphors. Heavily informed by his love of Otis Redding, Gabriel drafted erstwhile Redding trumpeter Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns to add some old-school soul cred to the track, which still managed to sound completely contemporary. Besides becoming an enormous hit, the song had a distinct Claymation video that became one of the most-played music clips on MTV.

“Big Time,” another ironic hit single, deals with the materialistic, acquisitive more-is-more philosophy so prevalent in the mid-‘80s. It’s less retro-minded than “Sledgehammer,” having more in common with Prince or Robert Palmer than anybody from the Stax stable. The churning, funky groove is driven by bassist Tony Levin ’s unconventional “drumstick bass” (a bass struck with sticks rather than plucked).

Watch Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' Video

During an exclusive interview with Ultimate Classic Rock, Levin talked about how Gabriel’s collaborators and his openness to new ideas informed the So sound. “"His bringing in Daniel Lanois to produce led to a more focused approach than we'd had before that, and bringing in Manu Katche on drums also gave a big change to the music," Levin noted. "Peter's always been breaking out into new musical areas, and this was one of his major steps.”

In addition to his band and co-producer, Gabriel brought in two important guest vocalists on So  whose contributions had a huge effect. Gabriel had long been a proponent of world music (in 1989 he would start Real World, one of the most prominent purveyors of international sounds), and for “In Your Eyes,” he had Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour add his passionate pipes to the tune’s epic romantic sweep.

Besides becoming another smash So single, the song became part of the collective pop culture consciousness when famously played by John Cusack’s character in 1989’s Say Anything … from a boombox held aloft outside his true love’s window.

Watch the Boombox Scene From 'Say Anything ...'

Gabriel’s U.K. art-rock peer Kate Bush was his singing partner for the moving ballad “Don’t Give Up.” Initially inspired by photographs of Americans struggling through the Dust Bowl era, the song was written in a manner general enough to resonate in Thatcher-era England as well, as a sweet-voiced Bush offers encouragement to Gabriel, who voices the travails of a downtrodden worker. In 2005, no less esteemed a duo than Bono and Alicia Keys would cover the song.

Though Gabriel would never reproduce the phenomenal success of So on any of his subsequent albums, the record turned him from a rather cultish thinking-man’s rock star into a bona fide celebrity. In addition to occupying the pages of music magazines, he started turning up in celeb gossip rags that dished out details about his romance with actress Rosanna Arquette. The media suddenly noticed that when he wasn’t hiding behind weird makeup and creepy album covers, Gabriel was quite the photogenic character.

In the end, none of the album’s commercial impact matters to anything outside of Gabriel’s bank balance. What makes So important is the way he seamlessly blended peerless pop savvy with an iconoclast’s adventurous artistic instincts. His slightly twisted pop songs packed enough emotional impact, sonic surprises and catchy melodies to make for one of the era’s most consistently rewarding records.

Peter Gabriel Announces 2023 Tour

by Tina Benitez-Eves November 8, 2022, 11:20 am

For the first time in nearly a decade, Peter Gabriel announces an official solo trek outside of North America. The singer returns to Europe and the U.K. in 2023 for his “i/o The Tour,” which supports his forthcoming album of the same name.

Videos by American Songwriter

The tour, which kicks off on May 18, in Krakow, Poland, and concludes on June 23, in Dublin, Ireland, consists of 22 shows across U.K. and Europe.

“It’s been awhile and I am now surrounded by a whole lot of new songs and am excited to be taking them out on the road,” Gabriel said in a statement. “Look forward to seeing you out there.”

Gabriel previously teamed with Sting on the road in 2016 for the pair’s “Rock Paper Scissors” trek. He last toured solo in 2014 with the “Back to Front Tour,” which commemorated the 25th anniversary of his fifth album,  So . He released his most recent album of new, original material in 2002 with Up . In 2010, Gabriel unveiled a covers albums Scratch My Back , followed by 2011’s New Blood , a collection of orchestral re-recordings of songs spanning his career.

Though a release date for  i/o  hasn’t been announced, more details of the album are forthcoming. Earlier in 2022,  Gabriel said he had a number of new songs he was “trying to get finished” and initially planned to release something by the end of 2022. In 2021, Gabriel posted a series of photos featuring himself with longtime drummer Manu Katché, guitarist David Rhodes and bassist Tony Levin, at his Real World Studios in Wiltshire, England.

Gabriel also shared that he and his band worked on 17 songs in 10 days.

“I’m excited by what is being cooked at the moment,”  said Gabriel when he first began teasing new music in 2020. “I have been slowed down quite a lot by lockdown. We’ve not been able to have Dickie [engineer Richard Chappell], but I have enough songs that I like, to make a record I’m proud of.”

The Deluxe Box Set edition of Peter Gabriel’s critically acclaimed new album i/o is released on 26 April, 2024. 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful – often thought-provoking – songs tackle life and the universe. Our connection to the world around us – ‘I’m just a part of everything’ Peter sings on title track i/o – is a recurring motif, but so too the passing of time, mortality and grief, alongside such themes as injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope.

The album features contributions from guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katché as well as Brian Eno, Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and keyboard player Don E. Peter’s daughter Melanie contributes warm backing vocals, as does Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath. Soweto Gospel Choir and Swedish all-male choir Oprhei Drängar lend harmonies and the New Blood Orchestra, led by John Metcalfe, both soothe and soar.
