Holt is home to a collection of elegant 18th century Georgian buildings that enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal, making it one of the most attractive destinations in North Norfolk.

The lively town has no shortage of art galleries, antique and book shops, along with restaurants and cafés hidden away in the enchanting courtyards and alleys that characterise this Norfolk market town.

Things To Do in Holt Norfolk

Explore the holt owl trail.

Probably the best way to get to know one of the prettiest Norfolk towns is to follow the Holt Owl Trail, one of the best free things to do in Holt. The project was created in 2017 by the Holt Town Council, the Holt Chamber of Trade and the Holt Society to promote the rich and unique history of the town.

The trail of 24 pavement plaques meanders between key places in the town and reveals the fascinating history, interesting facts, and even some of Holt’s hidden locations. Visit the website to read the story behind each plaque and find out more about local figures and places.

From historic monuments and memorials dotted around the town, historic listed buildings and links with Admiral Lord Nelson, to the famous Gresham’s School, founded by Sir John Gresham, the Holt Owl Trail is a walk through the history of Holt.

You’ll also learn about the 1708 fire, which broke out amongst wooden market stalls and swept through the town, its wooden medieval half-timbered buildings and the church.

Over the next 100 years, Holt was rebuilt using local materials like stone and flint, and this is why the Market Place and High Street are predominantly Georgian in design and architecture, and the pretty back lanes, streets and flint stone yards are mainly Victorian, as they were added later.

Take a Ride on the North Norfolk Railway

The historic steam engines of the North Norfolk Railway chug to Holt station on their route across the gorgeous Norfolk countryside from Sheringham.

The ride between Sheringham and Holt is just eleven miles, and the landscape, coastal views and experience of being on a steam train make the Poppy Line a must-do attraction in North Norfolk.

The railway station at Holt, whilst not on the original site, is a faithful re-creation of a Midland and Great Northern country station in the early 20th century, and uses station buildings recovered from various locations around East Anglia.

There is lots to do and see at Holt station, so make sure to stop on your way to, or from, the train. There is a small buffet and gift shop near the ticket office where you can pick up a snack or a souvenir of your journey.

A model railway depicts Broad Sidlinch, a fictional town featured in Thomas Hardy’s short story The Grave . Also on site is the William Marriot Museum, housed in a recreated goods shed. The museum tells the story of M&GN, and beautifully restored goods vehicles can be viewed in the loading bay just outside the museum.

Holt town centre is approximately one mile from the station. It’s a 25 minute walk or a five minute trip on the regular bus service from the stop on the main road, at the entrance to the station site.

Visit the Church of St Andrew the Apostle

The parish church of St Andrew the Apostle was established in Holt before even the Doomsday book in 1086. Situated in the heart of town, the church can be found at the end of Church Street, behind the War Memorial, at the east end of what was the original Market Place.

Nothing of the original 11th century Norfolk church survives, with most of the present church dating back to the 14th century. During this time, churches in the nearby coastal ports were being built on a grand scale.

In those days, Holt did not share the prosperity bought by the sea, and the church was built to a modest design, although there was originally a small spire. The church was rebuilt in 1727, and further restored in the 1860s to the pretty flint church we see today.

Discover Baker & Larners Department Store

Bakers and Larners of Holt is not your run-of-the-mill department store, but rather a local treasure that’s been serving the people of Holt for over 250 years!

The property at 8 Market Place was built in 1631, the date set in brick amongst the flint pebbles of the west gable. There has been a shop in this location since 1730, with the involvement of the Baker family beginning in the mid-1760s. Before becoming a department store, the offer was eclectic through the ages and included a blacksmith, brewer, builders’ merchant, ironmonger, and plumber!

Having survived two world wars, by 1958 the company employed 29 staff and was heavily into agricultural supplies. The business went into decline after the death of the Managing Director, Jimmy Baker, and was almost sold, but the 1970s saw a turnaround with a new generation of family members joining the Board. A period of rebuilding, rebranding and acquisition saw the business flourish and become the stalwart of shopping in Holt that it remains today.

Stroll Around Spout Hills

Just a one minute walk from the pineapple-topped obelisk and Blind Sam is Spout Hills, fourteen acres of lush green space, often called Spouts Common by locals.

Rich in wildlife, its most significant feature, and the one from which it derives its name, is a spring-line around the valley which provided water for the town until the 1940s, and now sustains a diverse wetland flora of streams, ponds, marsh orchids and colourful wildflowers.

Spout Hills makes a perfect spot for picnicking, dog-friendly walks, playing games, and enjoying a quiet stroll. Just walk past Obelisk Plain and continue right leaving the High Street. Immediately opposite, you’ll see a wide entrance with houses and cars parked. Cross the road, walk straight ahead, and the beauty of Spout Hills will open up before you. You can also access Spout Hills from Letheringsett road, near the Old Rectory, or from the disused railway line.

Shop the Art Galleries

There are over ten art galleries in Holt, with pieces by local and international artists for sale and on display. Work ranges from the traditional to the contemporary, and includes paintings, photography and sculpture.

It’s very easy to spend an afternoon mooching from gallery to gallery, stopping for a coffee and browsing in the many bookshops, boutiques, antiques and interiors shops which can be found in Holt’s pretty flintstone yards.

Lees Yard and Hoppers Yard are particularly good examples, once home to Victorian cottages which now house a variety of interesting and independent shops and cafés.

If you love shopping, you’re looking to stock up on Norfolk gifts, or just enjoy browsing, then the shops in Holt will most definitely deliver!

Visit the Obelisk and Blind Sam

Obelisk Plain is home to two of Holt’s most interesting landmarks, both with their own stories to tell!

The pineapple-topped obelisk is one of a pair of gateposts which were relocated from Melton Constable Park in 1757. The matching obelisk was given to the town of East Dereham. Each stone panel depicts the distance to various locations in Norfolk, and although these are incorrect now, they would have been accurate when the gatepost originally stood at the entrance to  Melton Constable Hall .

The Queen Victoria Golden Jubilee Lantern was erected in 1887 in the centre of the Market Place, before being moved to its current position in Obelisk Plain, to make way for Holt’s War Memorial. The gas-powered light proved to be erratic and more off than on, earning it the nickname of Blind Sam.

Wander Holt Sunday Market

Sundays are the new Saturdays in Holt because that’s Holt market day! Holt’s vibrant and local Sunday market is well worth a visit for street entertainment, pop-up food stalls, local producers and a great atmosphere.

The idea was born during the pandemic, and as soon as it was safe to do so, a group of over 30 makers and producers came with their wares and stalls to Appleyard every Sunday during the summer of 2020. The market was praised for its authenticity and quality, and numbers steadily increased until it was decided that a more significant Sunday Market should be formed.

The Holt Sunday market is now held, fittingly, on the Market Place, where regional makers, food vendors and local buskers ply their wares and trade, and many of Holt’s independent shops are open, making Holt the place to be on Sundays!

Explore baconsthorpe castle.

The Heydon’s built, enlarged and modernised this castle over 200 years, before finally abandoning it in the mid-17th century.

The castle has a fascinating history which weaves through several hundred years of fortunes being made and squandered in the fabric trade, poor business decisions and lavish living, all of which led to the eventual downfall of the Heydon family.

During the 1940s, the castle was given to the Ministry of Public Works, and it was later opened to the general public. Today, it is a Grade I and Grade II listed building and is also a scheduled monument, managed by English Heritage.

Eight miles from Holt, Binham Priory is one of the most complete and impressive monastic ruins in Norfolk. This Benedictine priory was founded in 1091 by Peter des Valoines, a nephew of William the Conqueror.

Binham Priory’s history is one of almost continuous scandals. Many of its priors proved to be unscrupulous and irresponsible, and by the time of the priory’s suppression in 1539 the community had been reduced to just six monks.

The nave of the priory church, with its splendid 13th century west front and fine tiers of Norman arches, is now the parish church and displays the former rood screen with medieval saints overpainted with Protestant texts. The extensive ruins beyond emphasise the original size of the monastery.

Holt War Memorial

History of Holt

While much of what you see in Holt today is Georgian, the town dates back to Roman times. Peacock Lane was part of the Roman Road from Salthouse and Roman remains have been found in the area.

In the Domesday Book, Holt is mentioned as a settlement with 60 adult males, 90 sheep, 60 pigs, 1 carthorse, 5 mills, a port (Cley) and a market. It was a thriving community thanks to its location which was ideal for trading and close to natural springs.

Fast forward to 1st May 1708 when the Great Fire of Holt broke out in the market stalls. It destroyed the town and its wooden buildings in about three hours. Even the Church was left in ruin.

Over the next 100 years, the town was rebuilt using brick, stone and flint. This explains why the Market Place and High Street are predominantly Georgian.

The back lanes, streets and yards are mainly Victorian as they were built later. Many of the town’s flint stone yards, which were originally small Victorians homes, have been transformed to shops and offices. The original local fire station was converted into a shop.

The town celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Great Fire of Holt in 2008.

Things to Do in Holt

Holt has its own unique charm that makes it popular with tourists and locals alike. It has a lot to offer visitors including some of the best Christmas lights in Norfolk (don’t miss their Christmas Light Switch On ) during the holiday season.

#1 Walk the Owl Trail

The Holt Owl Trail takes you on a tour of the most historic sites in the town centre. It gets its name from the ancient legend about local men who caught an owl. They put it in the Town Pound for “safe-keeping” but the owl flew away.

There are 24 pavement plaques with the picture of an owl that were installed in December 2017 as a project with Holt Town Council, Holt Chamber of Trade and the Holt Society. They mark spots like the War Memorial, Old Post Office, and Hanworth House.

#3 Go Inside St. Andrews Church

view down a path through trees looking at st andrews church tower in holt

The parish church of St Andrew the Apostle was established in Holt in the 11th century making the site a place of worship for about 1,000 years. It is located at the end of Church Street, which is found behind the War Memorial, at the east end of what was the original Market Place.

The church suffered a lot of damage during the Great Fire of Holt. The whole roof was burned and all the lead melted. The lead fell on the stones and cracked them all in pieces. There were two bells which fell down.

Still, some medieval features did survive including the circular 12th-century font, decorated with unusual fleur-de-lys carvings, which is the oldest feature in the church. These medieval features mixed in with the Georgian and Victorian architecture make it worth stepping inside to explore.

#4 Check out the Bakers & Larners Food Hall

Foodies will be in heaven in this award winning food hall that has been described as the Fortnum and Mason of East Anglia. Bakers & Larners has over 5000 square feet of high quality foods to discover and it’s been a family run business in Holt for over 240 years.

The shop is more than just food as it has acquired the name of the ‘Exceptional Department Store.’ They aim to offer an extensive range of quality products (not just the best sellers), backed up with great customer service.

#5 Enjoy Afternoon Tea

Holt may be one of the best places to have afternoon tea in Norfolk. Just remember it’s best to book these at least 24 hours in advance to avoid disappointment.

Byford’s is a Holt institution that is a café, deli, pub, restaurant, ice cream parlour and boutique hotel all in one. Their afternoon tea includes all of the classics and you can add savoury treats to celebrate special occasions.

They also have a special afternoon tea buffet that they call the Afternoon Tea Extravaganza on the first Sunday of every month. Just outside the town of Holt there is the Holt Antiques & Interiors Centre which is the largest in North Norfolk. You can find a mix of antiques, interior decor, furniture, collectables, french, vintage and industrial items. They have convenient onsite parking.

#7 Have Fish & Chips

Just because Holt is not a seaside town doesn’t mean that you can’t find good fish & chips. You actually have a couple options to choose from. Our favourite is Holt Fish & Chips, but Eric’s Fish & Chips is also very popular.

#8 Check out the Boutique Shops

Holt is a shopper’s paradise, featuring numerous independent and boutique shops. You can discover a wide range of products, including fashion, accessories, home decor, artisanal crafts, and gourmet treats. It’s a refreshing change from the mass-produced items found in larger retail chains.

You can easily spend an afternoon wandering around the town centre, exploring the offerings of various shops. Some of the noteworthy favourites include Follyology, Emma’s Boutique, and Hidden Treasures of Holt. Each of these boutiques offers its own unique selection of items, ensuring an enjoyable shopping experience.

#9 Ride the North Norfolk Railway

About 1.5 miles from the town, you can catch the North Norfolk Railway. It’s like a trip back in time. The 5.25 mile-long route has some pretty nice views of the landscape too. It’s one of the  best things to do with kids in Norfolk .

The Poppy Line as it is affectionately known has been running between Holt and Sheringham since 1976. The track was originally part of the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway’s Melton Constable to Cromer Beach branch line.

The Midland & Great Northern Joint Railways Preservation Society formed in April 1959, initially hoping to do other longer sections of railway, but when that proved impossible, they focused their attention on the 3 miles between Sheringham and Weybourne. In 1963 the Society formed the North Norfolk Railways Limited, to preserve, restore, and operate the line.

The North Norfolk Railways provides daily steam and diesel train service during February half-term and from  April  to October. They also have some special events like the Norfolk Lights Express , dining trains, behind the scenes tours, signalling experience days, and more. Get more information about the schedule and special events  here .

The station in Holt has a small museum, and there is a shop and buffet selling souvenirs and light refreshments nearby. There is also an extensive miniature railway, run by North Norfolk Model Engineers.

If you don’t want to walk all the way to the Holt North Norfolk Railway Station from the town centre there is the 44 bus (towards Sheringham) that will take you pretty close.

places visit holt norfolk

One of the most attractive small towns in Norfolk, with elegant Georgian buildings.

The historic town of Holt owes its 21st Century charm to 18th Century disaster. In May 1708, a devastating fire started at Shirehall Plain and spread with such ferocity that it took only three hours to engulf the medieval town.

But from the ashes a new town rose, giving us the superbly preserved Georgian architectural legacy we enjoy today.

With this generous collection of fine buildings at its heart, and being surrounded by woodland and parkland areas, Holt is a haven for artists, photographers, walkers and riders. Bookshops, galleries, antique and bric-a-brac shops, restaurants and eating-places, nestle shoulder-to-shoulder in the many alleyways and courtyards that punctuate its 300-year-old townscape.

On the edge of town lies Holt Country Park, an area of more than 100 acres of woodland. With car parking, picnic areas, nature trails, an adventure playground for the children and a year-round programme of activities for all ages, it’s an ideal spot for families.

Holt is a town for all seasons, from the annual Christmas Festival early in December to the Summer Fair in July. This creative and committed community has earned a string of Anglia in Bloom Small Country Town category and Best Kept Village awards.

The Poppy Line heritage railway travels a picturesque route across heathland and along the coast to Sheringham, where passengers can pick up the Bittern Line for stations through to Norwich.

Holt Tourist Information

Holt Tourist Information

The charming Georgian market town of Holt lies just four miles inland from the picturesque coastline of North Norfolk, considered to be an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. The town is still, perhaps, the most popular tourist North Norfolk destination not to be found directly on the coast. Like a snapshot of a bygone time, Holt retains an old-fashioned, even unique allure, resulting in a high frequency of return visits.

Deriving the name Holt from the Saxon word for 'wood', the area is recorded as 'a market town' as early in history as 1086, and prospered for almost 900 years under this classification until the market was closed in the 1960s. The predominantly Georgian architecture of the Holt resulted from a widespread donations to rebuild the town after a fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1708.

Whilst the traditional market may have disappeared, Holt's reputation for retail has grown exponentially and the town is now considered a shopping Mecca for those seeking special gifts and homeware. The concentration of the retail district in Holt means that everything is within walking distance, and visitors can expect to find a range of fine stores selling antiques and artwork, books, clothing and jewellery and much more.

Holt has also become renown for the events that take place there throughout the year. The Holt Festival makes for a fantastic trip, with arts and musical entertainment taking place throughout the town during a week in summer. At Christmas, the town is illuminated by a sea of white fairy lights, with many people travelling across the county to attend the lighting ceremony and see the streets become an idyllic winter wonderland.

Feeling hungry? Holt possesses an abundance of quaint tea and coffee shops providing some of the best afternoon tea in Norfolk. Serving scones and cake, delicious sandwiches and light lunches, there are few nicer places to be on a sunny afternoon that sitting outside a Holt cafe. Evening dining is also well catered for; whether you are looking for a restaurant with a traditional English menu, or award winning seafood, the range and quality of cuisine in Holt is sure to leave you satisfied.

Visitors looking for an extended stay in the town have a number of accommodation options; staying in  Bed and Breakfasts in Holt  and Holt's self-catering properties are an extremely popular way of seeing local sights, in Holt and beyond.

Holt Park, situated to the west of Holt, is a one hundred acre heath and woodland park which provides beautiful walks, an observation tower, wildlife spotting and fantastic cycling routes on its many paths, and is a popular family day out in North Norfolk.

The North Norfolk Steam Railway – the Poppy Line - is located just outside the main thoroughfare, and can be easily accessed by foot or bus, allowing you to travel to the Norfolk Coast at Sheringham, via Weybourne, in the style of halcyon days.

Holt, Norfolk

The prettiest georgian town.

Holt, Norfolk is one of those towns that you can wander around for ages, just enjoying the small hidden yards which are full of little independent shops and cafes, or browsing in the galleries and antique shops, get completely carried away (if you’re like me) in Bakers and Larners or spend your time eating in one of the many tea rooms, cafes, wine bars or pubs.

It’s a really pretty Georgian town with so many beautiful flint stone buildings, hidden yards and Georgian facades for you to enjoy.

Holt Norfolk

The Great Fire of 1708 in Holt

Byfords in Holt

Whenever you read about Holt, you’ll read about The Great Fire.  So it has to be mentioned here for one reason; the fire destroyed most of Holt.  Why is that significant? Well it was then rebuilt with Georgian architecture and thus has become one of the best loved Georgian towns in Norfolk .

Other Norfolk Georgian towns and villages are:

Byfords, the café and deli in the middle of Holt survived the fire and is thought to be the oldest building in the town, and the Norman church of St Andrews managed to escape too, although its thatched roof caught fire, but was repaired and still stands today on the edge of the town.

Holt Church

Interestingly, it’s believed that if the fire hadn’t destroyed Holt, then it would now look like the Suffolk village of Lavenham, full of incredibly beautiful medieval timber houses.  However, Holt isn’t to be outdone, and the attractive and pretty Georgian architecture can easily be seen all over the town, along with some very typical Norfolk flint stone.

Independent Shops

Holt, Norfolk is one of the best towns to visit for shopping if you want something a little different. You won’t find many chain stores here, and this is one of the things that makes Holt such a lovely town to visit.

It’s full of wonderful independent shops, small and large.  I can’t name them all, there are just too many, but one I must mention is Bakers & Larners.  This is just a treat – it’s one of the larger shops in Holt, but it’s almost like a little mini Fortnum and Mason with its “food hall”, wonderful kitchen shop and lots of other lovely little things in store for you.

As you meander around the narrow streets, you’ll discover the “yards” hidden away.  Most of these are home to cafes, shops, galleries and antique shops.

Appleyard in Holt

If you’re after boutiques or bakeries, antique shops and galleries, you’ll be guaranteed to find it here in Holt.

Shopping in Holt is a completely different experience to shopping anywhere else (unlike Norwich!) .  But beware, most of the shops are shut on a Sunday.

The Hidden Yards of Holt

Hoppers Yard, Holt, Norfolk

Holt has 4 hidden pretty flint stone yards which you’ll come across as you walk around the town.  These apparently were originally Victorian houses, but now they accommodate shops and tea rooms, as I mentioned above.

You can actually find out much more about the yards and historic houses by following the Holt Owl Trail ( see more about this below ).

One of the flint stone yards in Holt

It’s well worth trying to find these yards as each one has something different to show you:

  • Chapel Yard in Albert Street
  • Hoppers Yard in Bull Street, a lovely narrow little street
  • Appleyard  off the High Street
  • Lees Yard just behind the main car park

The Holt Owl Trail

Holt Owl Trail

If you love all the old Yards and the Georgian architecture and you're interested in the history of the town, then you'll love to hear about one of the town's initiatives, the   Holt Owl Trail.

This trail is specifically designed for you to be able to wander around the town in a circular loop following 24 informative plaques on the history of each building, monument, sign, street, clock and so on.  To find out more detail about each plaque, click over to the Holt Owl Trail website here.

There are so many historic buildings and "Yards" in the town, this is a great way to become more familiar with this very special North Norfolk town.  You can download the map here .

These plaques were installed in December 2017 as a project associated with Holt Town Council, Holt Chamber of Trade and the Holt Society and make for a fascinating trip to the town.

Eating and sleeping in Holt

There are many places to eat in Holt.  Lots of cafes, tea rooms, wine bars, a few pubs and restaurants; you certainly won’t be stuck for choice when deciding where you want to eat.  Again, there are just too many to mention, and you’ll discover them all as you walk around.

Lots of tea rooms and cafes to eat in

The same goes for places to stay in Holt Norfolk ranging from B&B’s to pubs to hotels.

The Obelisk and Blind Sam

places visit holt norfolk

A bit like the Great Fire of Holt, I can’t talk about the town without also explaining the history of the obelisk which stands at the entrance to the town (where the A148 meets the High Street), and the gas lamp which stands right next to it.

Holt Memorial

The obelisk was one of a pair of gate posts that was moved from Melton Constable Park, a short distance from Holt Norfolk.  But if you go and have a look at it, it’s rather splendid, with a pineapple on the top and mileage written below for the surrounding towns.  But of course having been moved, all these distances are totally wrong!  Amusingly, the other gate post was given to Dereham , who didn’t want it and dumped it in a deep well where it still stands today (I’d love to know whereabouts!).

And placed right next door to the obelisk is Blind Sam, a Victorian gas lamp which was given to the town to celebrate the jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887.   It used to stand in the Market Place, at the other end of the town but was moved to make way for the memorial stone which now stands there.

It was named Blind Sam due to the fact that the gas light from the lamp was very temperamental.  It was powered by the gas supply from the town, which at the time was rather unreliable!

Both of these are on the Holt Owl Trail too!

The North Norfolk Railway

Holt is the stopping point for the North Norfolk Railway line, also called the Poppy Line , which is a heritage steam line running from Sheringham to Holt, stopping off at Weybourne on the way.    It's a fantastic experience to  have a ride on these steam trains, it really takes you back in time.

North Norfolk Railway at Holt

It was originally the Midland and Great Northern Railway line which opened in 1887, and closed in 1964.  But in 1965 the line was restored and the North Norfolk Railway was born.

If you take this train and arrive at Holt, you can then catch the special bus which will bring you into the town before you catch the train back again to Sheringham.  It’s a really lovely steam train line, and you can read much more about the North Norfolk Railway here .

Holt Country Park and Spout Hills

Holt Country Park

If you visit Holt and you feel like a bit of a walk, then I would suggest you head over to Holt Country Park which is about a 5 minute drive from the town.  It’s a lovely woodland and heathland area with colour coded walks to suit everyone, including cyclists and dogs! It also features in the 16 Coastal Dog Walks book (below).

You’ll find more about Holt Country Park here .

And even closer to Holt is Spout Hills which is 14 acres of common land maintained by Holt Town Council and is just 150 yards from the obelisk.

The Nearest Beach To Holt

The nearest North Norfolk beach to Holt is probably Weybourne, but this is a pebbly beach and not ideal for sunbathing on the soft sand!  Move a little bit further east along the coast you you'll reach Sheringham beach  which has a long promenade, and when the tide is low it leaves wonderful hard sand.  High tide, on the other hand, brings the water right up to the promenade.

Sheringham is also where the North Norfolk Railway starts.

So  Holt Norfolk is a real treasure of a Georgian town near the North Norfolk Coast  and one that is a bit of a treat to visit!

16 Dog Walks Around The Norfolk Coast

If you're holidaying with you dog then you'll definitely want to know about  some fabulous dog walks on the coast where your dog will hardly need to be on a lead.

Holt – a guide for visiting this Norfolk town in 2023

geograph-6707635-by-Adrian-S-Pye

A haven for independent shops and a hit with tourists, the town of Holt is beautifully compact and is well-known for its Georgian buildings and proximity to some of the best outdoor spaces in Norfolk. However, we still feel that as a place to visit in Norfolk, Holt is very underrated. For this reason, we wanted to write a guide about this town for 2023, with a breakdown of the best things to see and do there. Let's get into it:

Where is Holt?

We should start by specifying where Holt actually is - the town is about 22 miles north of Norwich and is within the North Norfolk council area. It's just under an hour from Holt to King's Lynn , a town we've written about previously. It's about a 10-minute drive from Holt to Salthouse Beach, which is part of what makes the town such a popular holiday destination.

What is there to see and do in Holt?
