Guests will encounter an imposing giraffe, a striking King Cobra, a proud African lion, a powerful rhinoceros and more. Educational graphics will be displayed by each animal sculpture sharing detailed information and facts about the species along with statistics about the sculpture including how many bricks it contains.

“We’re thrilled to bring this awe-inspiring and educational experience to the Zoo,” said Dwight Lawson, OKC Zoo’s executive director/CEO. “Through innovation and creativity, BRICKLIVE emphasizes the importance of protecting and conserving our world’s vanishing wildlife and wild places a mission shared by the OKC Zoo.”

The Zoo is also offering a BRICKLIVE Animal Paradise Birthday Package while the exhibit is open through October. BRICKLIVE is returning to Knowsley Safari this July with a collection of Endangered Species.

27 hand-built brick animals will take up residency throughout Knowsley Safari’s Foot Safari, showcasing a range of wild and wonderful species all striving for survival.

Opening on Saturday 9 th  July, there’s no extra charge for the Safari’s visitors to enjoy the life-sized models, including a 7ft tall Bengal tiger sculpture that’s sure to tower over most guests this summer!

Standing amongst the Foot Safari’s real giraffes, meerkats, Amur tigers and bush dogs, visitors will also be able to spot brick models such as an orangutan, a giant panda, an African lion, an emperor penguin and a Tasmanian devil.

BRICKLIVE collection of Endangered Species opens at Knowsley Safari this July

Brick builders spent more than 5,064 hours creating the 27 models, which stacks up to 211 days and is about five-times as long as the six-week school summer holidays. Over 1.1million bricks were used during building, with 81,350 bricks alone used to construct the huge Bengal tiger.

Other large, eye-catching big brick cats include an African leopard made from 82,253 bricks and a panther built using 71,876 bricks.

Along with land animals, the Endangered Species collection also features sea creatures. Visitors will be able to look out for a blue fin tuna, a green sea turtle and a dolphin.

BRICKLIVE collection of Endangered Species opens at Knowsley Safari this July

Rachel Scott, Head of Marketing, Knowsley Safari, said:

“BRICKLIVE displays have been massively popular with Knowsley Safari visitors in recent years. They give guests something extra from their visit and perfectly combine enjoyment and excitement with a little bit of knowledge and learning. Children and adults learn interesting and fun facts about the real animals the bricks models are based on.
“The focus on Endangered Species fits well with the global and national conservation programmes that Knowsley Safari supports, as well as appealing to the curiosity of visitors. We’re seeing growing interest in sustainability and protecting the planet and activities such as the brick models allow visitors to more positively appreciate the progress being made to save endangered animals.”

The Endangered Species BRICKLIVE event runs from Saturday 9 th  July until 4 th  September 2022 to coincide with the school summer holidays. The collection follows Knowsley Safari’s first BRICKLIVE in 2019 – the Ultimate Brick Safari – and last year’s beneath the waves display, Ocean BRICKLIVE.

Visitors must book online. For further information and to book tickets, visit Knowsley Safari’s  website .

BRICKLIVE launches at Knowsley Safari highlighting the plight of 27 different endangered animals

BRICKLIVE launches at Knowsley Safari highlighting the plight of 27 different endangered animals

To highlight the plight of some of the world’s most Endangered Species, BRICKLIVE has arrived at  Knowsley Safari  just in time for the sunny weather and its summertime 2022 showcase.

The trail opens tomorrow – Saturday 9 th July – for eight weeks. Even better, entry is included within the standard  admission fee .

All 27 hand-built life-sized brick animals to arrive at the leading Merseyside tourist attraction feature on the Red List of Threatened Species, published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature ( IUCN ). It highlights where and what actions need to be taken to save the building blocks of nature from extinction. Currently, more than 40,000 species are believed to be under threat.

The models are already in position within  Knowsley Safari’s Foot Safari  – standing amongst the real giraffes, meerkats, Amur tigers and bush dogs who already reside there.

They include Bryn, a 7-foot-tall Bengal tiger, which took a team of three builders over 390 hours to create, using more than 81,000 bricks.Over the last 100 years, hunting and forest destruction have reduced tiger populations from hundreds of thousands of animals to fewer than 2,500.

Also included in the line-up is Oscar the Orangutang. He’s the handiwork of four modelmakers who spent 180 hours creating the masterpiece from 50,000 individual bricks. In the wild, Orangutangs need vast areas of connecting forest to live in, but between 1985 and 2007 these great apes lost 60% of their habitat due to deforestation and changes to land use, such as logging, palm oil production, mining and agricultural expansion.

Other brick models include a giant panda, green sea turtle, snow leopard and cheetah.

Each model is accompanied with an eye-catching and educational information board, which shares fun and interesting facts about each endangered species, as well as its level of threat, according to the IUCN’s Red List categorisation. These range from vulnerable to endangered, to critically endangered.

Brick builders spent more than 5,000 hours creating the 27 model animals – totalling 211 days, or 30 weeks – using over 1.1million bricks.

Rachel Scott, Head of Marketing, Knowsley Safari, said:

“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome back BRICKLIVE. These displays have been hugely popular with our visitors in the past and this summer’s installation, our third, is set to be even more popular. Not to mention, more important.

“Our focus, this time, on Endangered Species perfectly aligns with the global and national conservation programmes that Knowsley Safari supports, and we know that our visitors are also really interested and passionate about them.

“The amazing high-profile work undertaken by Sir David Attenborough – and many others – has brought conservation and how we can protect our planet to the masses, which is incredible. Now, activities such as our brick models can bring their plight event closer to home. It will enable visitors to Knowsley Safari to see them up close, learn a bit about them and appreciate the progress being made to protect them – as part of a fabulously fun family day out.”

Christina Anthony, from model builders BRICKLIVE, said:

“At BRICKLIVE we’re focused on creating an environment that encourages interactive play, fosters creativity, collaboration and physical experiences.

“By combining all of these fun factors with such an important and interesting design theme as endangered species, is a really powerful, enjoyable and engaging way to convey the importance of conservation to all ages.”

The Endangered Species BRICKLIVE event runs from 10am on Saturday 9 th July and throughout the school summer holidays until Sunday 4 th September 2022.

The collection follows Knowsley Safari’s hugely successful BRICKLIVE in 2019 – the Ultimate Brick Safari – and last year’s beneath the waves display, Ocean BRICKLIVE.

Visitors must  book online . For further information and to book tickets, visit Knowsley Safari’s  website .

Q: Will the event sell out?

A: Based on previous shows in 2014 and 2015, there is a strong possibility of selling out as our daily capacity is limited due to restrictions currently in place. BRICKLIVE in The Park is the largest event of its kind to take place in the UK this year, and we are expecting to sell out. We therefore advise that you purchase your tickets online before the event (and save money), but there may still be tickets available at the venue’s box office during the event.

Q: Will I have to queue to enter the show even though I’ve purchased my tickets online in advance?

A: If you have purchased advance tickets to BRICKLIVE in the Park, you will not have to queue at the Box Office to purchase tickets, but you may have to join the entrance queue… Don’t worry, we will try our hardest to get you in as soon as possible. If you and your family arrive before the start of the day, you will need to wait until the session starts. If you don’t buy your tickets in advance, we cannot guarantee there will be tickets available on the day.

Q: Is my ticket good for only one day or the whole weekend?

A: The ticket you purchase online is valid only for the date or session you purchase it for. For example, if you purchase tickets for Saturday Session 1, you will only be admitted for Saturday Session 1.

Q: Can I switch my tickets to another day or session?

A: While we cannot guarantee the option of switching days or session times, if you email us beforehand requesting a switch, we will assist you as best we can, pending availability.

Q: Do I need to print out my tickets?

A: Tickets purchased online can be either printed out and brought with you to the event, or shown on your phone at the door, though we advise printing your tickets before arriving at the venue to ensure a smooth entry. If you are unable to print your tickets before the event, please bring your order number to the venue Box Office.

Q: Do I have to buy a ticket for an adult that is not participating in the activities?

A: Yes. Anyone three years old and above entering the event must purchase a ticket. The event is designed to be interactive for attendees of all ages. Adults, children, and seniors are encouraged to participate in each of the activities. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Q: My name is on my confirmation, but I will not be the one attending the event. How do I change the name on the confirmation?

A: The name on the confirmation only refers to the individual that purchased the ticket. If the order is valid, entry will be fine.

Q: My ticket says I will need to bring a photo ID of the ticket purchaser and credit card used to purchase the tickets, what if I don’t have those?

A: These cards are not required. A photo ID and/or credit card make it easier to verify an order in our database. However, if you received the tickets as a gift and do not have these forms of identification, we will still be able to verify your tickets.

Q: Are toddlers allowed in for free?

A: Yes. Children three years-old and younger do not need a ticket.

Q: How is the show structured? Can I leave early? Will I be able to come back into the event if I leave?

A: Visitors may arrive and leave anytime within their booked session hours. If you decide to leave BRICKLIVE in the Park, you will be allowed to re-enter with a pass (we will be using ticket stubs and/or hand stamps to verify admission, so please ask before you leave the venue).

Q: Are there food stalls at the show?

There are many food options for you to choose from at Evolution London including restaurants and cafes. You are also allowed to bring your own refreshments into the show.

Q: Can I bring a pushchair to BRICKLIVE in the Park?

A: Yes, pushchairs are allowed at the event.

Q: Can I buy coffee?

A: There are many on-site cafes and restaurants to choose from, plus there will be tea and coffee concessions within the show.

Q: How accessible is the event for those with special needs?

A: BRICKLIVE in the Park offers an assortment of interactive activities that reach all learning styles and levels of interest. For those who need it, there is disabled parking close to the entrance of the venue, and the show is all on one level, making it easy for wheelchair access. Please consult the venue website for details.

Seating areas are located throughout the event space for your convenience. Guide dogs for the blind and service dogs for people with disabilities are welcome. All visitors, including those in wheelchairs and those with special needs, will find BRICKLIVE in the Park to be a fun, enriching and educational experience.

Q: May my child attend the event without an adult?

A: For everyone’s safety, children, and youth under the age of 16 must always be supervised by an accompanying adult during their visit.

Q: Can my child bring their own brick creations they built at home to BRICKLIVE in the Park?

A: We do not encourage children to bring homemade creations to BRICKLIVE in the Park. There are plenty of bricks at the event to build with.

Q: Can my child bring their creation(s) built at BRICKLIVE in the Park home with us?

A: The creations made at BRICKLIVE in the Park need to be left at the show for others to play with. At the end of each session, the creations are taken apart and sterilised so that they can be re-used for the next session attendees.

Ypsilanti elementary schoolers asked for a puppy, and the district said yes

  • Updated: Apr. 25, 2024, 2:49 a.m. |

Lincoln High School

MLive file photo of Lincoln High School MLive File Photo

WASHTENAW COUNTY – Ypsilanti-area elementary schoolers are getting a puppy after tireless fundraising through dances, bake sales and more.

Brick Elementary School students’ efforts paid off when the Lincoln Consolidated School Board unanimously approved Monday, April 22, a proposal to get the school its own therapy dog.

The school’s student council raised the majority of the $6,000 needed to purchase the dog and cover veterinary bills and insurance, with community members’ donations making up the remaining costs.

“These students are a thousand percent in to get this dog,” Principal Cassandra Coker said. “It’s been so incredible.”

The therapy dog would spend time in classrooms, calm emotionally distressed students and help children with special education needs in areas of communication, engagement and sensory issues among others.

“My background is in special education,” Coker said. “So it’s always been something very special to me. We are an at-risk building. So when you have students from trauma, and a high-needs population, I think the calmness, the relationship, the responsibility, the entire building having one goal to love this dog just really makes us more unified, makes us more of a community. And that’s really been my focus -- to make things in our building a true community.”

Coker will be the dog’s handler, meaning she will keep the dog at her home, undergo monthly training in how to care for it and take the dog to school.

The district will purchase the dog from Joshua Perry, a school resource officer in Adrian Public Schools who runs a side business training therapy dogs for schools, Coker said.

Training can take several months, and the dogs are building-specific, meaning the puppy will begin training at Brick Elementary as soon as possible, Coker said.

In a letter to the school board , Coker said that while the school has a variety of needs for a therapy dog, from students with special needs to those with trauma in their background, “this dog would be for everyone.”

Therapy dogs are shown to have a positive effect on students by providing emotional comfort and fostering a sense of calmness, according to research cited in the letter. The dogs can lower the release of cortisol, which causes stress and anxiety, and elicit the release of of endorphins and oxytocin – hormones associated with joy and happiness.

The dogs can also assist in promoting positive attitudes toward school, encourage kindness and foster a sense of safety, the letter said.

“It’s so exciting and I’m hoping that it makes it easier for all the other buildings to do it too,” Coker said.

Raiders NFL Draft grades 2024: Las Vegas takes Brock Bowers at No. 13 overall after 6 QBs go in first 12 picks

Here's what las vegas is getting in the former georgia te.

getty-brock-bowers-georgia.jpg

For the 13th straight pick, an offensive player has been chosen. The Las Vegas Raiders continued the historic run by selecting Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.

Bowers is a back-to-back John Mackey Award winner, an honor handed out to college football's most outstanding tight end. He's also the first player in its history to win the award twice. The Georgia product earned that accolade and then some as he proved to be the lifeblood of the Bulldogs offense throughout his tenure. The 21-year-old is a two-time national champion and a three-time All-American and All-SEC player.

Despite missing time due to an ankle injury last year, Bowers still led Georgia in receptions (56), receiving yards (714) and touchdowns (six). Throughout his collegiate career, Bowers was able to lead the Bulldogs in each of those categories. At the NFL level, he is poised to be the latest go-to tight end target that has engulfed the league in recent years.

Here's what the XXX are getting in Bowers, including his scouting report, pro comparison, career accolades, fantasy fit and overall NFL outlook.

NFL Draft grade: C

"He's a heck of a player, but didn't they draft Michael Mayer last year and signed Harrison Bryant this year? They have other needs. Don't really like this pick that much.. It's not like he's a good blocker for their run game. Strange pick with other needs."  -- Pete Prisco

Dynasty spin

Brock bowers  nfl draft prospect profile.

  • Age as of Week 1:  22 years old
  • Height:  6-foot-3 1/8
  • Weight:  243 pounds

Comparable body type:  Dustin Keller

CBS Sports prospect ranking

Position : No. 1 TE |  Overall : No. 14 |  Rating:  92.40 (All-Pro)

NFL comparison: George Kittle

With a build like George Kittle and an aggressive streak as a blocker and receiver like Kittle, it's easy to make the comparison even if Bowers has a lot of work to do to be as effective as Kittle on mid-range throws. But the gist is that if he get coached as well as Kittle did he can become as good -- and perhaps break out sooner than Kittle did.

Scouting report

Brock Bowers is a wiry strong athlete who is willing to contribute as a run blocker. His lack of ideal mass means he is more valuable as a blocker in space than inline. Bowers has soft hands and great range to go high or low. He has a good feel for pressing defenders at the route before making his cut. Bowers is incredibly effective creating yards after the catch.

  • Career: Only 2-time John Mackey Award winner (given to nation's best TE)
  • Most career rec yds (2,538) and rec TD (26) by TE in SEC history
  • Good top-end speed
  • Does a good job creating separation
  • Builds speed quickly
  • Does not tip off his breaks with his eyes, leans into the defender's body to create spce
  • Great hands and range to make catches outside of his frame
  • Lacks ideal height
  • Lighter frame makes it more difficult to hold up as an inline blocker

Flooding Inundates Kenya, Killing at Least 32 and Displacing Thousands

Heavy rains also pounded other nations in East Africa, including Tanzania, where at least 155 people were killed, according to the country’s prime minister.

Days of torrential rains have pummeled parts of Kenya, leaving at least 32 dead, 15 injured and more than 40,000 people displaced, according to officials. The flooding has killed nearly 1,000 farm animals and destroyed thousands of acres of crops, with more rain expected across the country in the coming days.

The rains began in March during what is known in the country as the “long rains,” but intensified over the past week, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department .

Heavy rains have also pounded other nations across East Africa. In Tanzania, at least 155 people were killed and 236 others injured from the relentless rain that has swept several parts of the country in recent days, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said on Thursday.

The rains affected some 200,000 people, Mr. Majaliwa added, and caused damage to farms, bridges, roads, schools and places of worship. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned that heavy rains and strong winds would continue to pummel several towns and cities, including the port city of Dar es Salaam.

In Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, where some of the country’s heaviest rain has fallen, more than 30,000 people have been displaced, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs . On Tuesday, 18 people there were stranded and later rescued, including seven children, the Kenya Red Cross Society said.

Edwin Sifuna, the Nairobi County senator, said on social media that the local government there was “clearly overwhelmed,” and he called on the federal government for help.

“The situation in Nairobi has escalated to extreme levels,” he wrote in a post that included a video of people stranded on rooftops surrounded by floodwaters.

Kithure Kindiki, cabinet secretary for the Interior Ministry, said in a social media post on Thursday that several government agencies were beginning a joint operation to assist the victims, conduct rescues and evacuate those who remain at risk.

The heavy rains on Wednesday forced Kenya Railways to suspend commuter train services. The Kenya Urban Roads Authority also partially closed four major roads in Nairobi and warned of heavy flooding along several major highways in the capital and in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The rains were not expected to subside over the next few days, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department, which had rain in the forecast for parts of the country, including Nairobi, through Monday. The agency also warned of a high likelihood of breakouts of diseases such as malaria and diarrhea in some areas.

The latest downpours come just months after torrential rains and floods killed dozens of people and displaced thousands more nationwide.

Here are photographs of the flooding in Kenya:

Where are the cicadas? Use this interactive map to find Brood XIX, Brood XIII in 2024

In a few weeks, over a dozen states will be abuzz as trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge from their yearslong underground stay.

Broods XIX and XIII will emerge in a combined 17 states, mostly in the Midwest and Southeast, in a rare, double brood event . These two broods last emerged together 221 years ago, and after this year are not predicted to do so again until 2245.

Once conditions are right, the two broods will emerge in massive numbers to feed, make noise, mate and die. Here's what to know about where to find the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII.

2024 double cicada broods: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX will emerge

The two cicada broods will emerge in a combined 17 states across the Southeast and Midwest, with an overlap in parts of Illinois and Iowa. They will emerge once soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in mid-May and lasting through late June.

The two broods last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a periodical cicada?

Both the 13-year Brood XIX and the 17-year Brood XIII are periodical cicadas, which emerge every 13 or 17 years across North America. They differ from annual cicadas, which emerge every year.

You may remember the last periodical brood to emerge in huge numbers: the 17-year Brood X that was found in 2021 throughout the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.

Annual cicadas, which are dark green to black with green wing veins, are  typically larger than periodical cicadas , which are recognizable for their red eyes, red legs and red wing veins, according to North Carolina State University Extension.

Periodical cicadas emerge earlier, usually in mid-to-late May as opposed to annual cicadas in July and August. According to North Carolina State University Extension, annual cicadas begin mating, " singing conspicuously " and lying eggs about two weeks after they emerge. Their first nymphs will fall to the ground and begin feeding on roots under the soil, and fully-developed nymphs will emerge two years later and molt into adults.

Above ground, periodical cicadas have a similar life cycle, appear in much larger numbers and are much louder. At the end of their season, the next generation of nymphs move underground and remain for either 13 or 17 years.

The Chicago Architecture Center: Facts No One Told You

Known as the birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago is a mecca for architecture enthusiasts.

This past weekend I had the chance to visit the Chicago Architecture Center during a family staycation .

It is a remarkable place dedicated to exploring the city's rich architectural legacy.

The Chicago Architecture Center

Located right in the heart of the Loop, the Center offers exhibits, tours, programs, and more for visitors looking to learn about Chicago's iconic buildings and urban design history.

As I approached the Center, I was wowed by its entrance with floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

I knew I was in for a one-of-a-kind experience that would provide unique perspectives on Chicago's architectural landscape.

In this blog post, I'll take you through highlights of my visit to this inspirational culture and this education hub that showcases our city's incredible architecture.

From historical insights to behind-the-scenes access, let me show you why the Chicago Architecture Center is a must-see attraction.

How to Get Tickets to the Chicago Architecture Center

Purchasing tickets to experience all that the Chicago Architecture Center is simple and convenient. As a tour partner, you can get your ticket (s) right away with the click of a button.

If you prefer to buy tickets on-site, head to one of the ticket counters on the main and lower levels once you arrive at the Center. Friendly and knowledgeable staff can provide guidance about the different Chicago architecture tours , exhibits, and 3D movie options and help you choose suitable tickets based on your interests.

The center accepts all major credit cards for ticket purchases. One money-saving tip is to look for special combo ticket deals on groupon.

With your tickets in hand, you'll be ready to start your architectural adventure in Chicago.

Inside the Chicago Architecture Center

Upon entry, I was tempted to see the first floor but wanted to save it for last. So, I immediately went to the second floor to see the exhibits.

The exhibits tell Chicago's architectural story from sustainable urban planning initiatives to innovative architectural designs.

After all these years, Chicago continues to evolve and adapt which enables them to stay at the forefront of urban development.

Famous Buildings and Architects

Chicago is home to some legendary architects who have helped shape the city's iconic skyline.

Daniel Burnham was an influential American architect behind prominent Chicago buildings like the Rookery, Monadnock Building, an

d Railway Exchange Building.

Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the most prolific architects of the 20th century, designed homes and structures in Oak Park and across Chicagoland including the Robie House.

Louis Sullivan was a pioneering modern architect and mentor to Wright, renowned for decorative Chicago works like the Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building, which is now a Target on State Street.

Jeanne Gang is a contemporary Chicago architect making her mark with creative buildings such as the Aqua Tower.

Additional famous Chicago architects through history include John Wellborn Root of the firm Burnham and Root, William Le Baron Jenney who is considered the father of the skyscraper, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe who designed modernist glass skyscrapers in the mid-1900s.

Chicago's landscape would not be what it is today without these iconic innovators. Here are some buildings that you may already be familiar with and are easy to recognize.

Monadnock Building

Chicago's Infrastructure

When I take the train into the Loop for work, the evolution and complexity of the city's foundation barely crosses my mind. However, this exhibit was an eye-opener.

On this visit I learned more about Chicago's building blocks, including the transportation system, road and bridges, green spaces, and waterways. The interactive displays engaged people of all ages.

Although I have always known the city's status as a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds. I still enjoyed hearing about the neighborhoods of Chicago, its population, and current projects within the city.

And even though I've heard the story of The Great Fire a dozen times, and it is always fascinating to see the fragility of man and the resilience of a city that rose from adversity.

Architectural Styles

There are several famous buildings you should know in Chicago . You will see some of them on the architectural river tour or when walking in the Loop. These architectural styles are most noteworthy, and most are located in the downtown area.
