Police Unity Tour Chapter 10

IMG_7087.JPG

Why We Ride

The Police Unity Tour was founded in 1997 when 18 riders, led by Pat Montuore, pedaled over 300 miles to the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington DC with the hope of bringing public awareness of Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and to honor their sacrifices. As the years progressed, the Police Unity Tour grew so additional chapters were created to address the growing number of riders that wanted to participate in the Police Unity Tour. Chapter II was created to represent the riders from South Jersey.  As Chapter II’s membership started to grow almost beyond its capacity, several board members saw the need to expand into a Chapter which represented central New Jersey.  In 2014, those members approached the National Board of the Police Unity Tour and asked to form a Chapter representing Central New Jersey.  The National Board Members, including Pat Montoure and Harry Philips, agreed that there was a need to expand, granted our request and Chapter 10 was created.  Chapter II continues to represent South Jersey and Chapter 10 joins them on their ride through Delaware en route to Washington DC, as we both continue to grow and expand.  We look forward to your help and support.  If you are a member of the Law Enforcement Community, we hope you will consider participating in our annual Police Unity Tour Chapter 10 ride which will depart on May 9th every year.

Remember our motto “We Ride for Those Who Died”

Officers from all over the country rode to the memorial, where a ceremony was held on Thursday, May 12. The ride is to commemorate officers killed in the line of duty or, as the slogan goes, “They Ride For Those Who Died.” The 2024 tour runs from Thursday, May 9 through Sunday, May 12, and the officers are again participating, along with Officer John Simonetti.

Annual Police Unity Tour earns kudos from Mt. Olive dais

  • May 5, 2024
  • May 5, 2024 Updated 15 hrs ago

MOUNT OLIVE TWP. - It's not unusual for someone on the Township Council dais to have a resolution pulled from the "consent" pile - resolutions that can be approved all in one motion - especially if they have an issue with it.

But that wasn't the case when Township Council President Alex Roman asked that one be pulled from the packet  during the council's Tuesday, April 30 meeting.

The resolution was to ensure  that police and Flanders Rescue Squad members participating in the annual Police Unity Tour on Thursday, May 9 would be covered as though they were on duty in the township, per the collective bargaining agreement.

And Roman only wanted to praise the department and put the spotlight on the event, saying it was "one of the big highlights of the Police Department every year."

On Sunday, Lt. Eric Anthony said four township officers will participate in this year's ride: Corporals Chad Rossy and George Jadue and Officers Chris Saunders and John Simonetti. Rossy, Jadue and Saunders participated in 2022.

Anthony also said officers raised $8,600 for this year's benefit. Since the department first participated in 2004, it has raised a total of $150,000, he said.

The tour, started in 1997by then Florham Park Police Chief Pat Montuore, is a 300-mile bicycle ride from New Jersey to Washington D.C., which raises awareness for and honors those law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

This year's ride starts in Fairfield and finishes up in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, May 12. More than 550 police officers from around the state are expected to set off from Fairfield, said Tour Communications Manager Erik Heller, a former Harding Township Police Chief.

All told, the tour, since its founding in 1997, has raised nearly $23 million.

ABOUT CHAPTER II

The Police Unity Tour Inc.

Welcome to the home page for Chapter II of the Police Unity Tour! Chapter II is based in Southern New Jersey.

In May 1997 Florham Park (NJ) Police Officer Pat Montuore had a simple idea: organize a four day bicycle ride from New Jersey to Washington, DC to raise public awareness about law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and to ensure that their sacrifice is never forgotten. With that, the Police Unity Tour was formed.

Twenty-six years later, the Police Unity Tour will arrive at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC, on May 12th, 2022 with more than 2,600 Police Unity Tour participants including riders, motorcycles and support personnel. These individuals are comprised from nine Police Unity Tour Chapters representing more than 40 states and several countries.

The journey is long and challenging. But for the Police Unity Tour participants, it is what they strive for throughout the year. Through fundraising and physical training, they know that their efforts raise awareness of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many law enforcement officers.

The last leg of the journey ends at the Memorial, where the participants are greeted by friends, family and survivors. Once there, many Police Unity Tour members present remembrance bracelets worn on their wrists throughout the journey to the families of the fallen.

This past May, The Police Unity Tour was proud to donate more than $2.05 million to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, bringing their total donations to more than $30 million over their history.

Inspired by our commitment and our Motto, "WE RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED"®,The Police Unity Tour is the sponsor of the National Law Enforcement Museum's Hall of Remembrance, the design and installation of electronic directories at the Memorial, the Memorial Fund's Officer of the Month Award and Recently Fallen Alert program.

In 1999, 22 members from Southern New Jersey began Chapter II seeing the need to expand the Unity Tour Family. Since then we have grown from 22 to over 200+ members.

Each year we depart from a southern New Jersey town and continue on with stops in Delaware and Maryland.  On the last day we merge with Chapter I (North Jersey) and renew our partnership by riding together to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Chapter II starts each year by completing a memorial ride in honor of a fallen brother or sister. In 2022 we will continue that tradition by riding from NJ to Washington, DC.

We are all proud to be part of the Police Unity Tour and we are humbled by the opportunity to "RIDE FOR THOSE WHO DIED"®

Pendrith wins CJ Cup Byron Nelson, his first PGA Tour title

McKINNEY, Texas -- Taylor Pendrith tried his best to ignore Ben Kohles ' final-hole meltdown, focusing on the eagle putt that the Canadian thought he might have to make even to force a playoff as he walked toward the 18th green.

Several stunning minutes later, a 3-footer for birdie gave Pendrith his first PGA Tour victory.

Kohles overtook Pendrith with birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 for a 1-shot lead, then bogeyed the 18th after hitting his second shot into greenside rough. Already in shock following two chips from the rough -- the second with his feet in a bunker -- Kohles missed a 6-foot putt that would have forced a playoff.

"Wasn't really trying to pay attention to what they were doing, although it really mattered, obviously," Pendrith said. "I feel for Ben. He played really, really good today, especially down the stretch. I've been on the other side of it a couple times, and it sucks. But it's golf. It's a hard game."

Pendrith shot 4-under 67 for a 23-under 261 total at the TPC Craig Ranch. The 32-year-old won in his 74th career PGA Tour start.

Playing just north of his birthplace of Dallas, Kohles shot 66 to finish a stroke back. The 34-year-old, who plays out of North Carolina and is winless in 68 starts, was the only player to bogey the 18th Sunday.

"Honestly, hadn't seen any rough like that all week," said Kohles, who moved to North Carolina when he was 10. "Just needed a little bit more umph on it. Did so many good things this week, and I'm just going to keep reminding myself of that and try to get myself back in this position."

Alex Noren , a Swedish player also seeking a first PGA Tour victory, was another stroke back. He wowed the crowd on the stadium hole at the par-3 17th with a tee shot to 2½ feet, but followed that birdie with a par knowing he probably needed an eagle on 18. Noren shot 65 and was alone in third at 21 under.

Aaron Rai and first-round leader Matt Wallace of England were at 20 under along with the South Korean pair of S.H. Kim and Byeong Hun An . Rai and Kim shot 64, An 65 and Wallace 68.

Pendrith, the third-round leader, and Kohles were separated by just 1 shot or tied most of the day. After Kohles made a 20-footer to take the lead on 17, Pendrith's par putt rolled all the way around the cup and went in.

"It just curled in, that putt, on the last second there, which was unreal just to give me a chance," said Pendrith. He had set it up with a chip from an awkward stance, with his heels hanging over the lip of a bunker, after saving par with another testy putt at the par-4 16th.

The victory qualified Pendrith for the PGA Championship in two weeks and next year's Masters. He's also in the next three $20 million signature events, starting next week with the Wells Fargo championship. Kohles and Noren also played their way into Wells Fargo with their Nelson showings.

With Wells Fargo and the PGA coming in the next two weeks, just three of the top 30 in the world ranking were in the field.

Jordan Spieth , the highest at No. 20, missed the cut for just the second time in 12 appearances at his hometown event. Defending champion Jason Day (22nd) and Tom Kim (23rd) didn't contend, with Day finishing 1 shot behind Kim at 9 under.

Jake Knapp , the second-round leader who three years ago was working as a security guard in his home state of California, shot 70 to finish at 19 under. Knapp and Wallace were the only players in the top eight with a previous PGA Tour win.

The start of the final round was pushed back 2½ hours because of overnight rain, and pairings turned into threesomes going off both tees with the players allowed to lift, clean and place shots in the fairway.

Wallace appeared to start a charge by chipping in for birdie at 12, the toughest hole of the week, and getting another birdie at the par-4 13th. A three-putt bogey on the par-3 15th stalled him out.

Rafael Campos , a 13-year journeyman from Puerto Rico who has spent most of his career on satellite tours, birdied five of the first six holes starting on the back nine to make the turn at 29.

The 36-year-old cooled off on his second nine before making a 48-foot putt from off the green for eagle on the par-5 ninth for a 63 that put him at 18 under.

Taiga Semikawa , a 23-year-old from Japan playing on a sponsor exemption, also finished at 18 after a 64.

Kris Kim , a 16-year old amateur making his PGA Tour debut, had a rough finish as the youngest to play a final round on tour in 10 years.

Playing his final nine on the front, the son of South Korean-born former LPGA Tour player Ji-Hyun Suh had four bogeys and shot 73 to finish 6 under.

Kim, who is from England, played on a sponsor exemption from the South Korean company and tournament title sponsor CJ Group.

Nigeria Police operatives

Why we raided Enugu community — Police

The latest development is happening less than a week after suspected herders invaded nimbo, a community in the same uzo-uwani local government area, killing at least four persons..

The police in Enugu State, South-east Nigeria, have defended their raid on Igga Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of the state.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how personnel of the Nigerian army and Nigeria Police Force invaded the community at about 10 p.m. on Saturday, burning several houses and other properties.

This newspaper also reported that one of the residents, identified as Richard Okoye, about 70-years-old, died during the invasion.

‘They killed two police, three vigilante operatives.’

In a statement on Sunday night, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, claimed “criminal members” of the community, on Friday, murdered two police operatives and three members of a Neighbourhood Watch Group in the area.

‘How the operatives were murdered’

Mr Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, said a combined security team comprising three police operatives and four members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group provided security for a team of visiting investors from Lagos State on a tour of a proposed agricultural investment site in the area.

Yahaya Bello vs EFCC

The police spokesperson claimed the team was ambushed and attacked by a large group of criminals, who opened fire on them.

“Upon the unprovoked sudden attack, members of the team scampered for safety, while an assistant superintendent of police, who led the team, one Neighbourhood Watch Group personnel, and the three-member team of investors were later rescued by a police team that immediately mobilised to the crime scene,” he said.

Mr Ndukwe said the two police operatives and three members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group initially went missing after the attack.

“However, in the course of a full-scale investigation and a search and search operation launched after that, three males suspected to have masterminded the attack were arrested.

“Their revelations during interrogation led to the discovery and recovery of bodies of the slain policemen and Neighbourhood Watch Group members in the forest on May 4, 2024,” he said.

The police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Kanayo Uzuegbu, ordered further deployment of the intelligence and operational resources of the police to sustain an ongoing “manhunt of the fleeing criminals” who carried out the attack.

Mr Uzuegbu, he said, has maintained that the police will not stop the operation in the area until they “fish out” and prosecute killers of the security operatives.

The police commissioner urged “criminal members” of the community who allegedly participated in the killing of the security operatives to surrender immediately.

Invasion: burning and looting of houses

Responding to the allegations of invasion of the community and burning of houses, the police chief said those pushing the narrative were attempting “to misinform and mislead” Nigerians.

He added that those circulating video clips and accusing the combined security operatives of burning and looting houses in the community should “desist forthwith,” but did not deny or confirm the allegation against the operatives.

‘ESN, not community members, carried out the attack.’

Meanwhile, a leader in the community, Festus Okonkwo, told PREMIUM TIMES that some gunmen, suspected to be members of the Eastern Security Network(ESN), the militant wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), attacked the security operatives.

IPOB is a group seeking the independent state of Biafra, which it wants to be carved out of the South-east and some parts of South-south Nigeria.

“The attack (on the security operatives) happened at Ada Rice Production Nigeria Limited, a farm settlement about five miles away from the Igga Community. The people that usually stay at the farm settlement to fight invading Fulani herdsmen are ESN members,” Mr Okonkwo, a former councillor for the community, said.
