Blue Lagoon Guide

Blue lagoon - the cyan dot on efate's coastline.

Just half an hour out of Port Vila, the gorgeous Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular spots for visitors to head. Beyond being incredibly Instagrammable, the Blue Lagoon will be hours of fun for the young and young at heart.

Getting There

The Blue Lagoon's just a half hour drive from the centre of Port Vila. It's on the east coast of Efate and can be accessed in a range of ways.

Many tour companies , on their round-island half or full day tours, will stop in to the Blue Lagoon for an hour or two.

If you have your own wheels , it's a fairly easy drive along sealed road and picturesque coastline. If you'd rather someone else does the driving, your accommodation will be able to set you up with a driver who can drive you out and back, and will wait while you splash about. Give the driver an indication of approximately how long you plan to stay at the lagoon for an accurate quote.

If you prefer to go under your own steam, it's a fairly flat (though long) cycle ride.

If you prefer to travel like the locals, the B Bus  (approx. VT400) will get you out there with no worries!

You'll need to bring cash with you to the Blue Lagoon. It's 500 vatu for adults, and 300 vatu for kids, so be sure to bring some coins with you to pay the entry fee. This money goes to the locals who own the land where the lagoon is located. The fee gives you access to the facilities around the lagoon.

What's There & What To Bring

The Blue Lagoon is in a stunning setting. Fringed by trees and bushes, it's secluded from the bustle of Port Vila and Efate's main road, and makes for a great backdrop for your inevitable Instagram shot. There are nice grassy areas for picnics, as well as toilets and change rooms (so you can get into your bathers before launching off the rope swing!) Note that there aren't lockers, though it is a safe environment.

Beyond a sense of fun and adventure, we suggest you bring your swimming gear (towels and bathers), and water or snacks you may want (there aren't any food outlets) and sunscreen. You may also like to bring any flotation devices or snorkels/goggles to add to your Blue Lagoon experience.

What To Do There

You could easily spend hours at the Blue Lagoon, whether you're after doing a little or a lot! Jump into the lapis-hued waters off the wooden platforms, swing in off the rope swings, or jump in off the trees. You'll certainly see the local kids showing off their rope swing skills, and they love a bit of friendly competition for who can do the best jump. Around the Blue Lagoon, you'll find benches and grass where you can sit back and watch everything unfold, perhaps with a picnic lunch.

Visiting The Port Vila Blue Lagoon: A Vanuatu Must Do

Whether you are visiting for a day or lucky enough to be staying here while on holiday you cannot miss exploring the Blue Lagoon in Port Vila.

I will let you know all there is about visiting, including entry fees , tours, how to get there, what to expect, and more.

If you’re looking for a place to swim, snorkel, or just have fun in the water, you can’t go wrong with the Port Vila Blue Lagoon.

Sue, there are quite a few of these blue holes around the island, however, this is one of the most popular, and for good reason. This natural wonder is located on the east coast of Efate, the main island of Vanuatu .

The crystal blue lagoon Port Vila is a stunning turquoise color, and it’s surrounded by lush greenery and coconut trees. You can jump into the water from rope swings or tree branches, or just relax on the shore and enjoy the view.

The lagoon also has some facilities, such as toilets, change rooms, and picnic areas, so you can spend a whole day there just relaxing.

I was lucky enough to visit Vanuatu as part of a South Pacific cruise from Sydney. During our day in port, I was lucky enough to explore some of Efate’s highlights, including the Vanuatu Port Vila Blue Lagoon.

So lets get into all you need to know including Blue Lagoon Port Vila tickets, how to get there, why its worth visiting and so much more!

Why Visit The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a perfect spot for families, couples, and adventurers who want to enjoy a refreshing and fun-filled day in nature. No doubt this was a highlight for me during my time in Port Vila.

The main attraction is the water itself, which is a stunning shade of blue that changes with the sunlight and the tide. The water is calm and clear, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

You can also have fun jumping off the wooden platforms, swinging from the ropes, or climbing up the trees that overhang the lagoon. The local kids are often there to show off their skills and challenge you to join them.

The Blue Lagoon is not only a great place to cool off and have fun, but also a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty and culture of Vanuatu.

You can admire the tropical plants and flowers, listen to the birds and insects, and interact with the friendly and welcoming locals who share their land with you.

You can also learn more about the history and legends of the Blue Lagoon from your guide or from the signs that are posted around the area.

No doubt this is a beautiful spot in Port Vila and a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.

How To Get To The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

The Port Vila Blue Lagoon is located on the east coast of Efate, about a 35 minute drive from the capital city of Port Vila.

There are several ways to get there, depending on your preference and budget.

Hire a car : You can rent a car from one of the many car rental companies in Port Vila and drive yourself to the lagoon. The road is sealed and well-signposted, and you can enjoy the scenic views along the way. Renting a car for a day may cost you about $60,00.

Book a tour bus or driver : You can also join an organized tour that includes a stop at the lagoon, or hire a private driver who can take you there and back.

This option may be more convenient and comfortable, as you don’t have to worry about driving or parking, and you can also learn more about the local culture and history from your guide. A tour or a driver may cost you around $40.00 per person.

Take a public bus : If you want to travel like a local, you can hop on a public bus that goes to the lagoon. The bus is marked with a letter B and costs about 400 vatu / $3.50 per person.

However, be aware that the bus may not run on a regular schedule, and you may have to wait for a while before it arrives.

Entry Fee To The Blue Lagoon

Once you arrive at the lagoon, you will need to pay an entry fee of 500 vatu / $4.00 for adults and 300 vatu / $2.50 for children.

This fee goes to the local landowners who maintain the lagoon and its facilities. There are toilets, changing rooms, benches, and grassy areas where you can relax and enjoy your picnic lunch.

How Can Cruise Ship Passengers Visit The Blue Lagoon

If you are a cruise ship passenger who wants to visit The Blue Lagoon this is definitely possible! It is exactly what I did when visiting Port Vila by cruise ship, and it turned out to be a great day.

Personally, I recommend booking a tour with a local operator that includes The Blue Lagoon as one of the stops. These tours will pick you up from the cruise terminal and take you to various attractions around Port Vila, including The Blue Lagoon.

You will have some time to explore the lagoon and go for a swim. These tours also include lunch and refreshments.

If this sounds like something you would be interested reach out to the following tour operators:

  • Vila Hope Tours
  • Sammy’s Port Vila Tours & Transfers
  • Yumi Tours & Transfers

Alternatively, for more of a private experience where you don’t have to share a car with numerous other people, you can hire a taxi to take you to The Blue Lagoon.

You can arrange for your driver to wait for you, or to come back later to pick you up.

When Is The Best Time To Visit The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

So, when is the best time to visit the Port Vila Blue Lagoon? Well, that depends on what you’re looking for.

Vanuatu has a tropical climate, which means it’s warm and humid all year round. However, there are some differences between the seasons that may affect your experience at the lagoon.

If you want to avoid the heat and the crowds, you may want to visit the lagoon during the dry season, which runs from May to October. This is when the weather is cooler, less humid, and less rainy.

It’s also the low season for tourism, so you may find fewer people at the lagoon. However, the water temperature may be slightly lower, and the lagoon may not be as vibrant as in the wet season.

If you want to enjoy the warmer water and the lush vegetation, you may want to visit the lagoon during the wet season, which runs from November to April.

This is when the weather is hotter, more humid, and more rainy. It’s also when the lagoon is at its most colorful, as the rain brings out the contrast between the blue water and the green plants. However, you may also encounter more tourists, as this is the high season for tourism.

Plus, you may have to deal with tropical storms or cyclones that can occur during this period.

For more space and privacy, you may want to visit the lagoon on weekdays, when there are fewer visitors and more room to enjoy the lagoon.

Avoid visiting the lagoon on weekends or public holidays, when there may be more locals and tourists who come to relax or have fun at the lagoon.

What To Do At The Blue Lagoon

This natural swimming spot is one of the most popular attractions in Vanuatu and for good reasons.

Swim in the crystal-clear water

The Blue Lagoon is fed by a freshwater spring that creates a stunning contrast with the turquoise ocean. The water is calm and refreshing, perfect for cooling off on a hot day. You can swim around the lagoon, or just float and enjoy the scenery.

Jump off the rope swings and trees

If you are feeling adventurous, you can try out the rope swings and trees that are set up around the lagoon. You can swing into the water like Tarzan, or climb up a tree and dive in.

The local kids will show you how it’s done, and they might even challenge you to a friendly competition.

Have a picnic on the grass

The Blue Lagoon has some nice grassy areas where you can spread out a blanket and have a picnic. There are no food outlets at the lagoon, so make sure to bring your own snacks and drinks.

You can also use the toilets and change rooms that are available for visitors.

My Experience At The Port Vila Blue Lagoon

So as I said earlier I visited the Vanuatu Port Vila Blue Lagoon as part of a tour from my cruise ship, the Carnival Spirit. This was just a tour I had found on Facebook, and in all honesty wasn’t too sure what to expect.

Unfortunately, the day didn’t start too well as the shared van we were meant to be a part of departed without us. However, our first stop at Rarru Cascades was a success, so it was on to the next, the Blue Lagoon.

Arriving in the car park we pay our entry fee, then it is straight down to the waters. As this was a cruise day this place was no doubt the busiest spot which we visited.

With crowds covering the Blue Lagoon, we make our way into the little wooden dock and jump down into the milky blue waters.

There is a great atmosphere with music blasting and everyone in the best mood. Locals are jumping off platforms and swings into the lagoon, doing impressive flips and dives on the way down.

This was the perfect place to hangout for a couple of hours and just enjoy the refreshing water. It is an absolutely gorgeous spot, though I do recommend visiting on a day without the cruise ship in port if you have that option!

What To Pack For The Blue Lagoon In Port Vila

Packing for a trip to the Blue Lagoon in Port Vila, Vanuatu, requires consideration to ensure you have a comfortable and enjoyable experience in this stunning natural wonder

Here’s a comprehensive packing list to help you prepare for your trip:

Swimwear : The Blue Lagoon is all about swimming and enjoying crystal-clear waters, so make sure to pack your swimsuits, swim trunks, and bikinis.

Sun Protection : The South Pacific sun can be intense, so pack sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and a rash guard or cover-up to protect your skin from the sun’s rays.

Footwear : Water shoes or sturdy sandals with good traction are essential for walking on uneven surfaces, as the Blue Lagoon may have rocks and slippery areas. You might also need flip-flops for when you’re not in the water.

Waterproof Bag : To keep your valuables like your phone, wallet, and camera safe from splashes or unexpected rain, consider bringing a waterproof bag or pouch.

Towels : While some tour operators may provide towels, it’s a good idea to bring your own quick-dry towel to ensure you have one readily available.

Snorkeling Gear : If you’re interested in exploring the underwater world of the Blue Lagoon, pack your own snorkel, mask, and fins. While some tour operators may provide gear, bringing your own can ensure a better fit and comfort.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen : When snorkeling or swimming, use reef-safe sunscreen to protect the delicate marine environment. Regular sunscreen can harm the coral reefs.

Insect Repellent : Depending on the time of year, mosquitoes and other insects can be active. Pack some insect repellent to avoid uncomfortable bites.

Reusable Water Bottle : Staying hydrated is crucial, so bring a reusable water bottle to refill and help reduce plastic waste.

Cash : While there may be some facilities that accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to have some local currency (Vanuatu vatu) for small purchases and tips.

Like most of the South Pacific nations, Vanuatu consists of a number of islands. One of the most visited of these islands is Efate Island.

Efate Island is not only home to the country’s capital, Port Vila, but also home to one of the best blue lagoons in the world.

So as a visitor to this scenic nation, it only makes sense to leave, even for a day, the bustling city of Port Vila and take a trip to the spectacular Vanuatu Blue Lagoon, which is just an hour-and-a-half drive from the city.

Blue Lagoon Vanuatu Travel Guide

Find everything that you need to know to help you plan your trip to the Vanuatu Blue Lagoon.

1. More About the Famous Blue Lagoon

Port Vila Blue Lagoon

Situated on the eastern part of Efate Island, the Blue Lagoon Vanuatu is a large swimming hole measuring about 60-70 meters long and 30 meters wide.

The Blue Lagoon is located next to the sea making it uniquely salty at high tide and fresh at low tide.

Better still, the lagoon is surrounded by lush natural gardens and can be best enjoyed when the sun is shining as the clearness of the water enables you to see virtually everything to the bottom, which is approximately 6 meters deep.

2. How to Get to the Blue Lagoon, Efate Island

As the capital city of Vanuatu, Port Vila is home to the nation’s international airport, as well as where all large cruise ships dock.

So once you land or dock in Port Villa, it’s advisable that you set aside half-a-day and plan to visit the stunning Blue Lagoon.

If you are staying on Efate Island you might like to hire a car so that you can drive around the island – and make a stop at the Blue Lagoon.  You can find our blog post on a one-day around-the-island road trip itinerary here .

However, if you are stopping by on a cruise, we highly recommend that you simply head off on a tour instead.

1. Hire a Car

There are many car rental companies in Port Vila.

Renting a car for a day may cost you about $60 (80 AUD), but it’s certainly worth it. The drive will take you around 1.5 hours.

2. Book a Tour Bus or Driver

Important to note that there is no public bus on Vanuatu that you can take you to the Blue Lagoon.

So you will need to negotiate and organize your own driver for the day, or alternatively join an organized tour.

a) Book a Driver or Minibus

An option is to book a driver for the day.  The drivers are great as they also act as your unofficial tour guide. You can also save costs by booking a minivan with some other travelers.

Be aware though that most cars/vans in Vanuatu are not really in the best condition and you won’t normally find aircon in the cars, so make sure to have a look at the driver’s vehicle before you settle on a deal.

b) Sign up for Tour

You can also sign up for a tour, which in most cases involve an around-the-island day tour. The only problem with this arrangement is that you may not get the time to enjoy the Blue Lagoon as much as you’d want because the tour isn’t exclusively meant for the Blue Lagoon.

There are two popular tours:

– The Round the Island Tour : A very popular 8-hour tour. This tour includes a stop to see some traditional dance and fire walking in Iarofa Village, a swim in the Blue Lagoon, a buffet lunch, as well as a visit the Survivor Beach, Gideon’s Landing, Pangpang, and Eton Village. Click here to check prices .

– Visit a Cultural Village and see the Blue Lagoon Tour : A 6-hour tour that includes a visit to the Balihai Custom Village, the swim in the Blue Lagoon as well as some sea turtles spotting at Naiwe Beach.  Click here to check prices .

3. Efate Island Blue Lagoon Admission Costs

Vanuatu Bue Lagoon on Efate Island

It’s very fair that locals own the lagoon and will charge about 500 Vatu (about $7) per adults and 300 Vatu (about $4) for children below the age of 12 for the entire day.

Try to have the exact amount ready as change might not be available.

4. What to Take with You

Opposite side at Vanuatu Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is so enticing and you’d probably want to swim even in winter! You should therefore, bring swimming togs and swimming towels . You should also bring floating devices for young kids as the lagoon itself is pretty deep.

Blue Lagoon Efate Island Vanuatu

And because you’ll likely want to explore underwater and meet some local fish, you should bring snorkeling gear , as well as a Go Pro or an underwater camera to capture the memories.

Keep in mind that there are no facilities offering food or snacks anywhere near the Blue Lagoon and because you’ll obviously want to refuel, it would be recommended that you bring your own lunch, snacks and water .

You should also remember that Vanuatu is a tropical destination and there are likely to be lots of sun and mosquitoes. Therefore, carry sunscreen and insect repellents just to be on the safe side.

5. What to Expect

There are two sides of the lagoon as they sides are owned by different families.

Essential they both have swings.

We prefer to head into the first entrance as you drive from Port Vila to the Lagoon. We found that it has a better atmosphere, it has good facilities, picnic tables, changing rooms, toilet facilities, kayaks for hire and better swings.

Swing at Blue Lagoon Vanuatu

We also found that the water was pretty cold and got deep pretty quickly.

The locals have built a staircase that leads up into the tree.  So if you want to try the swing, it is pretty easy to reach and you could choose to swing into the lagoon from a lower or higher level.

Also do expect crowds in and around the Lagoon, especially on cruise days.

It cannot be doubted that the Blue Lagoon Swimming Hole in the island of Efate is one of the best places in Vanuatu. It’s a magical place where solo travelers, families of all sizes and people of all ages. I think the photo on our faces below says it all!

Happy at Blue Lagoon Vanuatu

There’s arguably no other place in the world as amazing as the Blue Lagoon of Efate Island: an amazing place to relax, have fun and recharge by spending time in the crystal clear waters.

We highly recommend that you set aside at least a half-a-day to enjoy this little paradise on Efate Island.  It might even be our favorite place on the whole entire island.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Wow that does look enticing. We are heading to Vanuatu this year and planning to see as much as we can. The blue lagoon now has us thinking we should definitely look that up during the stay. Looks like you had a wonderful time with the family. Thanks for sharing.

If you go to Efate Island, do make sure that you do the round-the-island trip. Not sure how long you will be staying in Vanuatu, but my favourite island was Santo Island, so make sure you only spend a few days on Efate and then move on to Santo instead 😉

Jolene – many thanks for your details. Sounds like you all had a great time. Nine of us (family/fiancés/friend will be heading there in November. Dankie 🙂 Jackie (originally from Zimbabwe now living in Sydney)

Hi Jackie – Jy is welkom 😉 Have a brilliant time. Are you guys going via a cruise or will you be flying over?

Jolene – we are flying over. Just trying to organise a tour guide – for an island tour – as feel it will a lot cheaper with all of us. How do you get to the islands?

Hi Jackie, thanks for your comment. We always travel independently as we have a toddler and it is just easier to do what we want, when we want it 🙂 We flew from one island to the next. Hope you find a great tour for the islands 🙂

Hi there, is there a turtle place near the blue lagoon? If so, do you know roughly what the price is per adult/child?

Hi there, yes there is! 🙂 We didn’t stop there though so not sure on the pricing sorry.

HI there, just wondering do we need international driving licence if we hire a car? If so, is it better to hire car from rental companies or hire car from port with a driver? Thanks

Hi, We always have an international drivers licence, but I don’t remember if it was needed or not. I think I also depends on where you hire. On Efate we went through a rental company so we could get a child car seat for our toddler. On Santo, we hired through a private person at our hotel, so it wasn’t as ‘official’. I doubt anyone will pull you over in Vanuatu, so best to ask the rental company if they require one for their paperwork process or not.

The lagoon is more for the young, and very busy, but they did have a quiet end for swimming. We also stopped at the city markets and duty free which was a bonus I didn’t expect. Nice tour guide. It seems the local tour operator only notified the guide the night prior and he had to skip his normal work to take us. The trip was supposed to include entry fees but the local guide had insufficient cash to cover it. Also no complementary fruit was supplied. An expensive trip that could have been done for less than half the price by booking once we got there. Read more Written 28 February 2024
  • sstayner 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Asking for refund. Tour had not started 1 hour and 15 minutes past the start time. My 5 year old twins were tired. We returne Below is an email I sent to Atmosphere Tours outlining a request for refund for our excursion. Summary - we (me, my wife and 5 year old twin boys) arrived promptly at the designated time for the tour - getting up at 6 am so we were sure to be on time. However, 1 hour and 15 minutes had passed and the tour had not started. My children were tired and asked to return to the ship. Details are below, but I am asking for a refund of our $390 because we did not take the tour. My family and I have been planning a trip to Vanuatu for 2 years.  We originally booked this excursion in February 2023, but our ship was diverted from Port Vila due to cyclones.  We were looking forward to the excursion! Per the email below, your instructions specifically state that me, my wife and 2 5 year old children should arrive 45 minutes after the ship berths.   The ship was scheduled to berth at 7:00 am, so I paid an extra fee with our ship to get someone to escort us off the ship early so we would be on time.  I got my children out of bed at 6:15 am to get on the first tender and arrive at the Port Vila wharf by 7:45 am.   Once we arrived at the wharf, we were instructed to wait inside the wharf near some shipping containers.  Other tour operators had representatives in the area, but since no one from Atmosphere Tours had arrived by 8:06 am, I called to confirm we were waiting in the correct location.  I was told someone was at the gate and would come to get us. At 8:23, no one had yet arrived from Atmosphere Tours, so I called again and was again told to wait.  At about 8:35 Jerome (sp?) arrived with two others.  We were told to follow Jerome to a van.  We followed Jerome to a him to van marked Atmosphere Tours, but were instructed to wait outside the van.  Other passengers were loaded in the van while my family was instructed to wait outside the van. At about 8:45 am,  the van was full with other passengers.  Jerome's colleague told us to go back to the shipping containers, where we originally had waited, and William would then pick us up.  Then, Jerome and his colleague had a discussion and instructed us to pack into the van for a short drive to meet William.   The van did not have enough seat belts for me and my family, but we piled in around 8:55 am.  It had been an 1 hour and 10 minutes since we arrived at the wharf when we started driving.   We finally met up with William at 9:00 am, but he had other passengers in his car.   Jerome, seemed confused and called the home office.  My children were tired and asking to go back to the ship. My wife was not confident in the tour as things had been so disorganized up to that point.  Our new driver, William, told us the wharf does not open for the private tour groups until 9 am so he did not understand why we had been instructed to be at the wharf so early.   At 9:02 am 1 hour and 17 minutes after our tour was to have started, I called Atmosphere Tours and talked with Annie Boe.  Annie had sent me the original email instructing us to arrive at 7:45 am.  I told her since so much time had passed since the tour was supposed to start, my children were tired and wanted to go back to the ship.  I asked that a refund be sent for the tour.  She said she would talk with the "Director", George, and call me back. I called Annie at 9:19 am and again at 9:36 am.  Annie told me to write the email and provided me with the Director, George's, phone number. Our driver, George, took us back to the wharf.  I have William $50 cash for his time taking us back to the wharf. I tried calling Director George at the number Annie provided me: +67751520.  However, the number is disconnected.  I tried calling Annie (+67827870) again to reconfirm George's number, but that number now goes directly to voicemail. We are very disappointed that the experience was not as we expected and appreciate your efforts on our behalf.  As instructed by Annie, I am formally requesting a full refund of the $390 for your we did not take.  I paid our driver, William, $50 cash for taking us back to the wharf. Thank you, Richard  Read more Written 26 February 2024

The timing at each place gave plenty of time. The blue lagoon was refreshing, as was the fruit morning tea. Leave your bag with the guides, we didn’t and almost lost it! • chrisbR5470CN 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Just for me! I made an 11th hour decision to book this trip; half expecting that it may not proceed due to low patronage. Low patronage it was.....just me! How considerate of Atmosphere Tours to continue with the trip when probably running at a loss due to my sole patronage. That's really delivering on a promise! Blue Lagoon is terrific. Take a snorkel and venture out towards the sea mouth...there's a couple of deeper holes and some nice fish to be seen. Eden on the River was a nice side trip. No staff were present (3.30 pm) but I was accompanied on my wanderings by two lovely resident dogs that seemed trained for the task! Warning...don't get into that water unless a qualified supervisor is around. Spectacular but potentially quite dangerous. The only negative on my trip was my driver's obvious tiredness at the wheel on the outward journey, after completing a lengthy hotel-airport transfer beforehand. A nap at Blue Lagoon was just the tonic to freshen him up! Thank you Atmosphere Tours. Read more Written 25 January 2024

Our guide John made it all the more better We chose this trip as a non-cruise ship option for our day in Port Vila and it was great. Our tour guide John provided a bit of personal insight into local lifestyles and included a final stop before we returned to the port so we could do some souvenir shopping. Both stops on the tour were amazing and we were the only group at Eden on the river for most of our time there. He was on time at the cruise terminal and maximised every moment we had, even stopping off at a roadside stall to buy us some of the best pineapple we have ever tasted The cost of the trip was excellent value for money too!! Carlos was the driver and did a great job ! and Justin was our very enthusiastic guide ! Gave us all kinds of information about his country and eagerly answered all our questions . The stops at the Cultural Village and Blue Lagoon were great . It was very interesting to learn how the people tradionally hunted , trapped and fished as well as how they took care of wounds using native plants . The Blue Lagoon was refreshing and beautiful ! Next we stopped at a beachside hotel for a lovely lunch . Then a stop at a small museum of World War 2 artifacts where the chap who runs it gave us a brief account of how he and his Grandfather accumulated the artifacts . Lastly we went to a converted church that is now a coffee production facility where we had a brief tour and then time for refreshments before returning to the terminal . We loved every minute of this day ! Thank you Tumas to Justin and Carlos !! Read more Written 14 January 2024

The guide really look out for us….even to the point he paid for my toilet entry so that I wouldn’t get ripped off. He had a mission to look after our welfare and make sure we got back on that cruise boat. If you take out the entries and the yum lunch it only left $100 for the vehicle and guide. I’d recommend this to anyone. But book before you go. Read more Written 12 January 2024
  • loganr87 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see the island in a day My husband and I did the round island full day tour and it was great. We really enjoyed the experience and our guide, Justin, was really good too. He provided so much commentary as we drove along, was always friendly and upbeat and answered all questions we had throughout. I really appreciated the small tour group size - only 6 guests and pick up and drop off from our resort was smooth. The itinerary did change slightly from what is advertised, but I had anticipated this and had no issue. Our tour includes a visit to a local school, but since the children are on summer holidays from the end of November to early February, this of course couldn't be included. Instead we visited Tanna Coffee which I enjoyed as well, so no issue there. As long as you go in to this tour not being too uptight about the itinerary or timing etc I think you'll enjoy it. Stops were a cultural village, Blue Lagoon, impromptu stop at a roadside stand to buy fruit for morning tea (the pineapple was delicious! And a good chance to meet some locals), lunch at a beautiful remote resort on the beachside, WWII memorabilia collection stop at Havannah Harbour, Tanna Coffee. We also drove through and past several various villages and were told by the guide about the locals and how they live plus got to see Banyan trees and learn a bit about them - these both were done from the car without stopping but we were happy with that. Top Things To Do in Port Vila Vanuatu

Vanuatu was a destination I had always dreamed of visiting. From stunning waterfalls to underwater wonders, Port Vila, the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, had much to offer.

It was tricky to narrow down, but these are my top 8 things to do in Port Vila.

Discover the Mele Cascades

The Mele Cascades are a series of stunning waterfalls in a rainforest. A visit here offers you the chance to hike through Vanuatu’s pristine nature, swim in crystal-clear pools, and bask in the refreshing mist of the falls.

The entrance fee when I visited was 2,000 vatu ($25 AUD)per person. This is one of the most expensive entry fees in Vanuatu so I would recommend skipping if you’re on a tight budget.

Dive into the Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is an incredible natural wonder, it’s no wonder it’s on the top of travellers’ bucket lists. It’s a breathtaking bright blue lagoon surrounded by lush vegetation and offers excellent snorkelling opportunities.

Remember to bring cash, it’s 500 vatu ($6 AUD) for adults, and 300 vatu for kids, so be sure to bring some coins with you to pay the entry fee.

Explore Port Vila Markets

For a taste of local culture, head to the Port Vila Markets. Here, you can sample fresh tropical fruits, indulge in local cuisine, and shop for handmade crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. I found it to be a bustling place that provides a glimpse into the daily life of the Vanuatu people.

Visit the Ekasup Cultural Village

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Vanuatu by visiting the Ekasup Cultural Village. Local guides will take you on a journey through traditional village life, where you’ll learn about customs, rituals, and artistry, including traditional dance performances.

Enjoy a Day at Hideaway Island

Just a short boat ride from Port Vila, Hideaway Island is a gorgeous marine sanctuary offering some of the best snorkelling and diving experiences in the South Pacific. Explore the underwater post office, where you can send a waterproof postcard (yes you read the right) and relax on the pristine beaches.

Going on a Buggy Tour

An exhilarating buggy tour of Port Vila is one of the most fun things you can do. Explore off-the-beaten-path areas that are inaccessible by other means. Ride your buggy through forests and along scenic coastlines, it’s a thrilling adventure!

Discover the History at the National Museum of Vanuatu

To learn more about Vanuatu’s history and culture, a visit to the National Museum is a must. The museum showcases a great collection of artifacts, including traditional art, tools, and ceremonial objects, providing valuable insights into the country’s past.

Where to Stay in Port Vila

These are my recommended stays in Port Vila.

I loved my stay at Breakas beach resort, it was a beautiful beachfront resort with wonderful bungalows.

BREAKAS BEACH RESORT

I loved my stay at  Breakas beach resort,  it was a beautiful beachfront resort with wonderful bungalows.

Breakas is located just south of Port Vila on a 500m private beach. It’s a short drive to shops and restaurants although you won’t really need to leave the resort as it has it all.

Free breaky is included plus there is a range of delicious Italian options for lunch and dinner.

The resort also offers daily activities including cooking classes, live music, fire dancing, and more.

You don’t need to go far to access some great snorkeling at Breakas. I spent the day exploring the reef located on the private beach and it was magical.

Garden View Bungalow cost around  $262 AUD  and include free breakfast.

➡️ Book your stay at Breakas Resort now

Melanesian hotel is a great value stay in Port Vila

MELANESIAN HOTEL

I unexpectly stayed at the Melanisian Hotel as my flight was delayed by a day and I needed a nights accommodation.

I opted for the Melanisian hotel as it is affordable yet very comfortable. Plus it has air conditioning and a pool which is essential in the Vanuatu heat!

Buffet breaky is included which is a great spread of pastries, toasts, cereal, juices and fruit.

For Vanuatu the Wi-Fi was decent and the rooms come equipped with a tv which is great to pop on as you fall asleep in the comfy beds.

It’s a short walk to get into the heart of Port Vila’s city including the Port Vila markets which are a must for exploring.

Overall, I loved my stay at the Melanisian Hotel and would recommend you check it out.

Exploring the streets of Port Vila in Vanuatu on a day tour

FAQs: Best Port Vila Tours & Things to Do

Moving onto some commonly asked questions about the best Port Vila tours and things to do.

What to do in Port Vila in one day?

In one day in Port Vila, you can tick off quite a few attractions that showcase the best of this tropical paradise.

Start your morning with a visit to the Port Vila Markets, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture, sample fresh tropical fruits, and shop for unique handicrafts.

From there, head to the incredible Blue Lagoon to swim in the gorgeous bright blue waters. Visiting a blue hole in Vanuatu is one of the most incredible experiences and although the Blue Lagoon isn’t as incredible as the blue holes in Espiritu Santo it is still well worth the visit.

Alternatively, you can head west of Port Vila to Mele Cascades, a waterfall just a short drive from the city. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear pools and hike the nature trails.

Afterwards, fuel up with a delicious seafood lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants along Port Vila Harbor.

In the afternoon, explore the rich history and culture of Vanuatu at the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and the National Museum. Finally, wind down your day with a relaxing sunset cruise around the harbour, enjoying the breathtaking views and maybe even a traditional kava ceremony.

This is just one of the many itineraries you can craft, I also highly recommend a day trip to Hideaway Island for snorkelling or diving.

Getting around Vanuatu isn’t the easiest, so I highly recommend you join a guided tour or rent a car.

How many days do you need in Vanuatu?

For a basic introduction to the main attractions of Port Vila and a couple of nearby excursions, a stay of 3 to 4 days is sufficient.

However, to truly appreciate the diverse beauty and culture of Vanuatu and to explore multiple islands such as Efate, Tanna, Espiritu Santo, or the more remote outer islands, a stay of at least 7 to 10 days is recommended.

This allows you to organize a variety of activities, from volcano hikes and diving adventures to cultural encounters with local communities.

I booked a 7-day trip to Vanuatu which was great on paper however I ran into quite a few flight cancellations and delays on AirVanuatu which is apparently pretty common.

My advice, factor in extra time for travel delays and things going wrong. Vanuatu is quite slow-paced and they are quite behind the times so don’t expect the same level of service as you receive in Western countries you visit.

Can cruise ships go to Port Vila?

Yes, cruise ships can visit Port Vila, which is a popular stop on many cruise itineraries in the South Pacific.

Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, has a well-equipped cruise port that can accommodate various cruise ships of different sizes.

Cruise passengers arriving in Port Vila have the opportunity to explore the city’s attractions, go on tours and excursions to nearby natural wonders like Mele Cascades and Hideaway Island, and experience the local culture and cuisine.

The city offers a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere to cruise visitors, making it a great destination for those exploring the beautiful islands of Vanuatu.

How long does it take to drive around Port Vila?

Driving around Port Vila itself doesn’t take very long, as the city is relatively small and compact.

It typically takes around 3 hours to drive around Port Vila, depending on the specific route you take.

The main road that encircles the city is the Ring Road, and it provides access to most of the city’s attractions and accommodations.

If you plan to explore the surrounding areas or visit natural attractions like Mele Cascades or the Blue Lagoon, you should budget additional time for those trips, as they usually require longer drives.

How do I get to the Blue Lagoon in Vanuatu?

To get to the Blue Lagoon in Vanuatu, you’ll typically need to travel to Efate Island, where the Blue Lagoon is located.

Most travellers to Vanuatu arrive at Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu, on Efate Island.

From Port Vila, head to the Blue Lagoon by one of the following options:

Guided Tours

Many tour operators in Port Vila offer guided day trips to the Blue Lagoon. These tours often include transport, lunch and opportunities for snorkelling and swimming.

Renting a car is another option. You can drive to the Blue Lagoon, but driving in Vanuatu can be tricky as one they drive on the right-hand side of the road and two some of the roads are unpaved or less maintained with potholes to dodge.

You can also hire a taxi to take you to the Blue Lagoon. Negotiate the fare with the driver beforehand and ask them to stick around to take you back to Port Vila. Expect to pay similar rates to taxis in Australia, they aren’t cheap.

The journey from Port Vila to the Blue Lagoon takes around 30 to 45 minutes by car.

Once you get there get your camera ready and prepare to be amazed and the stunning turquoise swimming hole.

Remember to check the opening hours and bring some cash for the entrance fee (500 vatu).

Consider joining a guided tour if you prefer a hassle-free experience with additional information about the area’s natural wonders and cultural significance.

  • D8685UUheatherl 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful swimming Eden is really beautiful and not too cold for swimming. The lagoon is more for the young, and very busy, but they did have a quiet end for swimming. We also stopped at the city markets and duty free which was a bonus I didn’t expect. Nice tour guide. • warren_winkler 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Nice guides but expensive for what we got We enjoyed this tour but the tour operator was late and we had to chase them up on the telephone.

Eden by the River was invigorating and lunch was great. The cultural village was so informative as was Alfred. Thank you Yumi for making our day in Vanuatu so special. We loved your friendly welcome to Vanuatu, your local knowledge and insight. We were delighted to be your first guests in your beautiful new air-conditioned bus. The Blue Lagoon was very scenic and Eden on the River perfect for the adventurous and the Duty Free was great value. Please be aware if you are travelling to Port Villa via Royal Caribbean cruises it can take up to 1.5hrs to disembark via tenders to the port first thing in the morning and they don't care if you miss your tour.
  • GeorgeMel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This was a fantastic tour option for our cruise ship day in Port Vila. • Brenda H 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Day ! We were travelling by cruise ship and our driver and guide were waiting for us at the appointed time when we disembarked the ship .
  • draw4u_sydney 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Go the East side of Vanuatu You gotta remember that the whole country ain’t Europe..It’s 3rd world…but they are trying the best they can.
I was the only one on the tour and loved the whole trip. We stopped at blue lagoon first and then eden. Both stunning places to swim and take in the views. William waited each time and talked about the cyclone damage from the past on the trip there. Half a day was just perfect when you have a lot of other things on during the day. You get to spend enough time in the locations and still have a great time. Today was great. Thankyou! Read more Written 10 January 2024
