Staying in hand-picked Pousadas (inns), formerly a monastery, manor house and convent, this tour reveals the sights and psyche of Portugal, from regal splendour to religious heritage, from port-wine cellar to Fado show, from Porto to Coimbra and the capital, Lisbon
“Porto works, Coimbra studies, Lisbon plays.” This popular Portuguese adage is a deft precis of the trio of cities, complementing each other in character and all serving, historically, as riverside sentinels, on the Douro, Mondego and Tagus respectively. This fascinating tour visits all three, Porto straddling the Douro and the centuries with Baroque churches, beaux-art buildings, merchant houses and an ethos of industry; Coimbra, with 300,000 ancient tomes in the gilded library of its 13 th century, UNESCO listed university; and Lisbon, with fountains, Fado singers in Old Town cafés, and vintage trams, in sunshine yellow, climbing its steep streets. Three peacefully positioned Pousadas counterbalance the cities, all bringing modern amenities to old-world atmosphere, and each a refreshing retreat, serving regional food and wines; the Mosteiro set on a hillside above Guimarães, Conimbriga Hotel do Paco cushioned in large gardens in Condeixa-a-Nova, and Castelo crowning its Palmela hilltop with serene seclusion and splendid views. From these relaxing bases, varied tours take you to the religious hub of Braga, medieval Tomar, the walled town of Óbidos, Sintra’s royal summer palace and the scenic Arrábida Natural Park.

This was our first bike trip done without a guide and it went way smoother than my wife and I expected. No issues with nav or support, bikes good. Portugal is awesome. If you like biking, wine, really cool hotels, and amazing food this is the trip for you.
Tracey Milton-Humpheries
The Milton-Humpheries family gives this tour 5 STARS!!! This trip was much awaited after covid cancellations 2 times! We took our adult-aged children and their partners as a celebration for my husband’s 60th birthday. The accommodations were really nice and we felt that it was the perfect amount of biking for a family that cycles regularly. We aren’t bike snobs, but we do enjoy getting out there. What a great way to see Portugal. Only suggestion is an extra day in Evora. We will be back!
Jon Eriksen
Algarve is great! Loved the food, wine, and routes were enough of a challenge to feel like we earned all of those cals but not too exhausting, either! Hotels were really nice and we appreciated not having to sort out all of the details ourselves. We have taken two tours with Pure Adventures – this one and Catalonia. Excellent support with both bike tours but still enough freedom. Maybe next time France??
Kennedy Cardamome
My husband and I have traveled with many different companies for different types of self guided format trips, but we always come back to tours with Pure Adventures because they have the best customer service from start to finish – there is a real sense of pride and ownership that you only see with a small business. Highly recommend this bike tour – all of the small villages are perfectly situated along the route and the lodging is quite special. Local support in Portugal is top notch.
Fransisco was our orientation support; he was great. Overall the experience was fantastic but tweaks need to be made to the tour. First, the paper maps are necessary and must be updated to include more detailed instructions. For example, specific land marks and where to make turns, zoom out on overall daily routes, kilometer values from one point to another. Second, the GSP has two options for short and long days. Both options MUST START from the beginning of the route, not from the point where the short option can be taken.

8 Portuguese Pousadas Turned Luxury Hotels We’d Love to Spend the Night In
Every year, the Pestana Hotel Group converts historic properties in Portugal—known locally as pousadas —into places you can stay. From monasteries to convents, medieval castles to regal villas, fortresses to government buildings, here are eight unique places that help tell the story of Portugal’s past.
See recent posts by Jenna Scatena
Pousada de Lisboa, Lisbon
One of Portugal’s newest pousadas is also one of its most beautiful. The restored 200-year-old government building in the heart of the city is awash with dramatic archways, stained glass, and a classical arcade fronting the Praça do Comércio. Guest rooms are just as elegant, with parquet flooring, high ceilings, and some with views of the Tagus River. There’s even an indoor swimming pool on the top floor and a spa, but the coolest detail of all (IOHO) are the various pieces of national art scattered throughout the property—generous contributions from local museums.

Pousada Convento Arraiolos, Alentejo
This retreat, tucked in a bucolic pocket of Alentejo wine country, is as serene as it was during its former incarnation as a 16th-century convent. The property still retains a beautiful chapel adorned with traditional azulejo tiles, while newer additions include a modern spa and a contemporary pool overlooking the valley. Rooms are refurbished nun quarters, now outfitted with stylized wooden beds and alcove fireplaces—the perfect place to cozy up before bedtime.

Pousada Castelo de Óbidos
Talk about historic. In the fortified village of Óbidos, an hour north of Lisbon, you can sleep in a medieval castelo dating all the way back to the 8th century. Today, 17 guest rooms (including ones in the original castle tower) and romantic common areas are still filled with medieval art and artifacts. Time your visit during the summer and you’ll see locals parading around in traditional medieval garb for July’s Mercado Medieval festival. For even more culture, visit during the fall to attend the Fólio Festival of Literature.

Pousada Convento Évora
The museum-city of Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the perfect home for this equally historic pousada, housed in a former convent. Guest rooms—former monk cells—are smaller than average, with low doorways that inspire (er, force) guests to bow their way in, but what they lack in space they make up for in elegance with their heavy drapery, plush furniture, and ornately patterned rugs. Elsewhere, the hotel has retained its quiet meditative spaces and air of peacefulness while adding modern amenities like a posh outdoor swimming pool and Loios restaurant, which serves regional Alentejo specialties in a fine-dining setting.

Pousada Mosteiro Crato, Alentejo
Located almost as far east as Spain’s border, this countryside pousada is one of the country’s most regal: it’s comprised of a Gothic-style church-fortress, a castellated palace, and a 14th-century monastery built in the Moorish and Renaissance styles. After a treatment in the new spa, while away the rest of your day with a glass of vino on one of the outdoor couches lining the olive tree-shaded courtyard.

Pestana Palacio do Freixo Porto
This stunning 18th-century Porto palace—now a National Monument—was built by Nicolau Nasoni, one of the city’s most prominent architects. Among its swoon-worthy features is a sprawling garden, 87 elegant rooms dressed up in chestnut and gold hues, and frescoes at almost every turn. The perfect afternoon here involves ordering a glass of port at Bar Nasoni and watching the sunset over the Douro.

Pousada Sagres, Algarve
With its miles of idyllic, sun-soaked sands, the Algarve was made for beach lovers. That’s where you’ll find Pousada Sagres, perched on the Praia da Mareta cliffs just a five-minute walk from the Atlantic. One of Portugal’s more modern pousadas, Sagres is housed in an original midcentury villa, with clean lines and nautical touches that pay tribute to the Atlantic and Portugal’s Age of Discovery. Many rooms feature views of the ocean and mountains, so be sure to book one with a balcony.

Pousada de Angra do Heroísmo Sao Sebastiao, Azores
It doesn’t get more remote than this 16th-century former royal fortress, which clings to cliffs above the ocean in the distant Azores—a cluster of Portuguese islands in the mid-Atlantic. The suites and some of the guest rooms have balconies overlooking the ocean, but even if you can’t snag one yourself, the property’s two uniquely angular pools are just as worthy of a photo-op.

Portugal Discovery, Self-drive
The only problem was starting us with a car that was way too small. Would have appreciated a little more information about the places to see, and other possible options if we so wished. Otherwise a great trip
Discover Madeira, Self-drive
The hotels were very good. The car rental was a little inconvenient as it was offsite from the airport. The only improvement would be either to include GPS in the rental car or a proper detailed map. We arrived on a rainy, foggy night and it was almost impossible to find our guest house the first night.
Portugal North and South, Self-drive
It was a wonderful experience. The hotels are way above my expectations. Just one little thing not too important is that there is drop off fee at Faro airport. I totally recommend this tour to my friends.

We had a great time! The hotels picked for us were so great. The breakfast must have been awesome because when i came home weighed the same as when i left and we walked lots. The location of the hotels put us in the middle of the best areas. Very helpful with all our needs. Would book with them again.

Portugal road trip reviews.
The locations and hotels selected were excellent. At the last minute my husband ended up in a wheelchair for most of the trip. Once I mentioned it to the check-in staff they went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. Changing rooms so that he had a walk in shower, a room close to the elevator and assistance with luggage or whatever we needed. Thank you.
