Yes, the points earn rate may differ for each account if you have multiple accounts enrolled in the Value Program. This is because each account will be assessed individually to evaluate the number of eligible product categories you have associated with each account, which determines the rate at which your account(s) earn Avion points.

For example, if you have two personal deposit accounts enrolled in the Value Program and 5 eligible product categories:

  • One account would have 3 product categories, which means you would earn 1 Avion point for every $3 spent on debit in-store and online using the enrolled account.
  • The second account would have the remaining 2 product categories, which means you would earn 1 Avion point for every $5 spent on debit in-store and online using the enrolled account.

Only RBC Avion credit card holders are eligible to redeem their Avion points for flights on the Air Travel Redemption Schedule . Before booking, you should keep in mind:

  • Check the number of points needed for your destination in the Air Travel Redemption Schedule.
  • Destinations have a Maximum Ticket Price (All taxes and service fees are separate and are not part of the maximum ticket price). In the event that a ticket costs more than the allowed amount, the additional cost can be charged to your credit card or you can use your Avion points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD.

For example:

A flight from Toronto to Vancouver has a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. If the base fare of the flight you select is $825 CAD, you can charge the excess amount of $75 ($825-$750=$75), (plus taxes and fees) to your credit card or redeem points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD (75x100= 7500 points)

If the base ticket price exceeds the Maximum Ticket Price, the additional cost can either be charged to your credit card or you can use any remaining points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD to pay for the amount over the maximum ticket price. Terms and Conditions .

A flight from Toronto to Montreal requires 15,000 Avion points and has a Maximum Ticket Price of $350 CAD (all taxes and service fees are separate and are not part of the ticket price.)

The base fare of the flight you select is $400 CAD. This amount exceeds the maximum ticket price ($350 CAD) by $50.

You can either charge the excess amount of $50 (plus taxes and fees) to your credit card, or use any remaining points at a rate of 100 points = $1 CAD (50x100=5 000 points).

For RBC Avion credit card holders who do not want to redeem from the Air Travel Redemption schedule, there is no Maximum Ticket Price for airline tickets.

Yes, you can pay for your booking with a combination of points and credit card.

For ION or ION+ cardholders, Avion Rewards Core Product Accounts and Avion Select members, 172 points = $1 CAD. A minimum of 2,500 points must be redeemed and the remaining balance can be paid with a credit card.

Other Avion Rewards members can redeem travel at a rate of 100 points =$1 CAD. A minimum of 1,000 points must be redeemed and the remaining balance can be paid with a credit card.

RBC Avion Visa cardholders who are redeeming Avion points for flights from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule can use their credit card to pay for taxes and fees and any amount above the Maximum Ticket Price.

RBC Avion Visa cardholders can also purchase additional points to use towards flights on the Air Travel Redemption Schedule and must have at least half of the required points for their booking in order to purchase additional points. The minimum amount of points to purchase is 1,000 and maximum is 15,000, and every 1,000 points costs $40 CAD plus applicable taxes.

Yes. There are three ways to redeem Avion points for first or business class seats.

Select either first class or business class before searching for flights. Then, redeem the required number of Avion points for the destination of your choice, up to the Maximum Ticket Price as indicated in the Air Travel Redemption Schedule. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. Finally, pay for the price difference between the Maximum Ticket Price and the total price of your first or business class ticket by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $1.00 CAD.

Redeeming for a flight from Toronto to Vancouver from the Air Travel Redemption Schedule requires 35,000 points for a Maximum Ticket Price of $750 CAD. The Maximum Ticket Price excludes any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees. If the cost of the flight you select in business class is $1,000 CAD, you can pay for the price difference of $250 by redeeming 25,000 additional points (100 points = $1 CAD). In total, you would need to redeem 60,000 points.

If you are an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege for Private Banking, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege, RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business or RBC Commercial Avion Visa cardholder, you can pay for the entire price of a first or business class ticket (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees) by redeeming your points at the rate of 100 points = $2.00 CAD.

If a flight from Toronto to Vancouver in first class costs $3,200 CAD (including any applicable taxes, surcharges and fees), you would need to redeem 160,000 Avion points (100 points = $2 CAD)

Convert your Avion points to WestJet dollars or to British Airways Avios, American Airlines AAdvantage Miles or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles. Converting your Avion points gives you the flexibility to redeem for rewards and benefits these programs offer, including for first or business class seats. Once converted, points cannot be transferred or converted back to Avion points.

All travel reservations made over the phone will be subject to a $30 booking fee per ticket or hotel booking.

Avion Rewards members with an Avion Rewards Core Account can't make new bookings over the phone.

Yes. If the airline you have selected provides this service, you may pre-select your seat while booking travel online or after you have completed your redemption

Unfortunately, at this time, booking travel to Cuba or Iran is unavailable through the Avion Rewards website, mobile app and the Avion Rewards Travel call centre. If you want to travel to Cuba or Iran, please call 1-800-ROYAL-1- 2.

  • Sign in to the RBC Launch app. Select the transaction banner at the top, and redeem points towards your last purchase with Apple Pay.
  • Turn on push notifications for the RBC Launch app. We’ll let you know when your purchase is eligible to redeem points.
  • Get started by selecting the Samsung Pay app icon or by swiping up from the bottom of your screen.
  • Select Pay with Avion Rewards Points and choose how many points you’d like to use towards your purchase.
  • Tap to pay, and your purchase is complete.

The full purchase amount will be charged to your credit card for your purchase and a statement credit for the points redemption will be applied on your credit card account within 2-3 business days from the date of your purchase. Your statement credit will indicate which merchant your transaction was made with.

You will still continue to earn Avion points for the full purchase amount even when you redeem points for that purchase.

All redemptions are final and cannot be cancelled or reversed once submitted. The points redeemed will remain as a statement credit towards your account balance even when you return or refund your purchase. The number of points redeemed may vary during promotional campaigns.

Note: Push notifications may display account information, such as account balance and transaction information, on the screen of your device in a locked state and in your device notification center. You can disable push notifications in your notification settings.

3. From here, select “Pay Credit Card Now”

4. Choose the amount you wish to redeem

This benefit is only available to Avion Elite and Avion Premium members with an eligible RBC credit card.

Yes. If you’re an eligible Avion Rewards member and a member of the Hudson’s Bay Rewards program, you can:

  • Convert your Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards points.
  • Turn on auto-convert to have your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points automatically converted to Avion points.

With auto-convert, your current Hudson’s Bay Rewards points will automatically be converted to Avion points on an ongoing basis, until you turn it off. When auto-convert is turned on, you won’t be able to convert Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards points.

You must be a member of the Hudson’s Bay Rewards program in order to complete either of the conversions above, and the Hudson’s Bay Rewards account must be in the same name as your RBC Royal Bank credit card account.

For one-time conversions, a minimum of 500 Avion points must be converted and they can only be converted in increments of 2 Avion points thereafter. For auto-convert, your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points will be automatically converted to Avion points when you have a minimum of 40 points in your Hudson’s Bay Rewards account and in increments of 4 Hudson’s Bay Rewards points thereafter.

Note: At this time, RBC ION Visa and RBC ION+ Visa cardholders are not eligible to convert their Avion points to the Hudson Bay Rewards Program and vice versa.

To turn on auto-convert:

  • Sign in to Avion Rewards
  • Select Redeem in the top navigation or menu.
  • Select Hudson’s Bay Rewards from the Convert Points menu.
  • Select the tab, Auto-convert your Hudson’s Bay Rewards points, and follow the steps.

This benefit is only available to Avion Elite and Avion Premium members with an eligible RBC credit card. At this time, RBC ION Visa and RBC ION+ Visa cardholders are not eligible to convert their Avion points to the Hudson Bay Rewards Program and vice versa.

No, we don’t currently offer this option. You can only convert Avion points to Hudson’s Bay Rewards as a one-time conversion with a minimum of 500 Avion points.

Transfer points gives you the ability to consolidate your Avion points where you need them most. Through a simple set of steps, you can transfer Avion points from one points account to another. Check out the individual perks and benefits of your points-earning account to see where you can maximize the value of your points.

Note: Points are transferred on a 1:1 basis, meaning the number of points you transfer will not change from one points-earning product to another. In addition, there is no fee to transfer points.

If you have more than one Avion points account, you can transfer points between most accounts that appear on your profile. Transfers are only eligible between points accounts that you own. Points earned by an authorized credit card user, belong to the primary credit cardholder.

Yes, you can combine the Avion points you have earned using your eligible personal deposit account (by making in-store or online debit purchases) with the Avion points you have earned with your personal, and business credit card and vice versa.

Here’s how to combine your Avion points between points-earning products:

  • Log in to avionrewards.com and click the "Transfer" menu.
  • On the landing page, select "Transfer Now” in the “Transfer Points” option. You can transfer points between the products shown in the drop-down menu.
  • Within "Transfer Points", you can set up a one-time transfer or an auto-transfer so that all the points you earn with your points-earning product(s) can be pooled to one points account, making it easy to keep track of your points in one place and get you closer to your redemption goals.

No. There is no minimum or maximum. You can transfer Avion points between accounts as you need, with no limits. Also, if you realize that you have transferred too many points in a points account, or into the wrong points account, you can always transfer them back, with no fees.

When you transfer Avion points from your U.S. Dollar Visa Gold points account to another Avion points account (non U.S. dollar), the points will be transferred at a rate of 1:1.

No. Avion points transfers are final, and cannot be reversed or cancelled. However, if you choose the wrong points account for your transfer or need the points back into the account you transferred from, you can just set up another transfer. Don’t worry, you will not pay any fees, or experience any loss in the transfer.

Yes. If your business banking profile is linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points to or from your business rewards account online.

If your business banking profile is not linked to your personal banking profile, you can transfer points from or to your business rewards account by calling us at 1-800-769-2512 .

Avion points will be awarded based on how many points you have earned up until the day you opt out. As long as your personal deposit account remains open (and in good standing?), you will not lose the points you have previously earned when you opt out of the Value Program .

If you close a personal deposit account that is enrolled in the Value Program:

  • The monthly fee rebate 1 you receive will be based on the number of eligible product categories you had and the specific account activities you completed (pre-authorized payment, direct deposit, eligible bill payment) in the previous calendar month. If you close your account on a day other than the last day of the calendar month, your monthly fee rebate will be pro-rated and paid on your next statement cycle date.
  • Avion points are earned up until the day the account is closed and are based on debit purchases made from the first day of the calendar month through the date you close your account.

After closing your personal deposit account, you have 12 months to use your Avion points, which can be redeemed by calling the RBC Advice Centre at 1-800-769-2512 .

Yes you can. You will be able to redeem Avion points you have earned (based on the rates associated with the closed account) for up to 12 months after closure. You can also transfer your points to any active points account you have and redeem from there. If you are not ready to redeem your points, be sure to transfer them to an active account before your 12 months are up.

The Avion Rewards program has 2 membership levels, Avion Premium and Avion Elite.

  • If you have an RBC Avion credit card, you are an Avion Elite member and will receive benefits associated with that membership level.
  • All other Avion Rewards eligible products qualify for the Avion Premium level.

Note: Your membership level provides you with additional benefits such as offers, however the number of points required to make a redemption is tied to either your RBC card product or your Avion Rewards Core Product Account.

You can apply for an RBC Avion credit card and once you have been approved and have activated your card, you will automatically have access to all benefits associated with the Avion Elite membership level.

If you cancel your RBC Avion credit card, you will no longer have access to the benefits associated with the Avion Elite membership level since having an RBC Avion credit card is required in order to be part Avion Elite.

Avion Rewards provides members many ways to earn Avion points. Depending on the Avion Rewards eligible product you hold, eligible members are able to earn Avion points from:

  • Purchases made with an eligible RBC points-earning credit card
  • The Value Program. Simply enroll an eligible personal deposit account and start earning Avion points on qualifying debit purchases made online or in-store.
  • Offers available on the Avion Rewards Shop page. Simply load your available offers to earn bonus Avion points on qualifying purchases and follow the steps on how to claim your offer.
  • When acquiring a new eligible RBC product, with an associated welcome points offer.
  • With qualifying purchases using your eligible linked RBC card at our select merchant partners like Petro Canada. Eligible clients receive 20% more Avion points at Petro Canada when they pay with their linked RBC points-earning credit card.

Eligible personal RBC clients without an eligible rewards credit card and/or an eligible personal deposit account that is enrolled in the Value Program are able to access Avion Rewards and will be given an Avion Rewards Core Account upon enrollment into the Avion Rewards Program.

RBC Personal Deposit Accounts that have not enrolled in the Value Program:

RBC Personal Credit Cards

RBC Personal Investment Products

RBC Installment Loans, Lines of Credit and Home Equity Financing that are not tied to a business banking profile

Please visit the Avion Rewards Terms and Conditions to learn more about the Avion Rewards Core Product Account.

Yes, you can pay down your RBC points-earning credit card balance with Avion points using the RBC Mobile app. The redemption process works similarly to how it does through the Avion Rewards web site–just choose the RBC points-earning credit card you would like to pay, the dollar denomination and corresponding amount of points you wish to redeem. The RBC Mobile app is available for iOS and Android.

Eligible Avion Rewards members can use their Avion points to send an Interac e-Transfer by sending to a payee through RBC Online Banking or the RBC Mobile app.

RBC Commercial Avion Visa, RBC Avion Visa Business and RBC Avion Visa Infinite Business credit cards, select Avion Rewards Core Product Accounts and single credit card only clients are not eligible to send an Interac e-transfer with points.

This benefit is only available to Avion Elite and Avion Premium members with an eligible RBC credit card. Check eligibility, here

Through the Value Program , Avion points are reported monthly and take into account all in-store and online debit purchases from, and returns to, an enrolled personal deposit account.

For example, say you purchase a $300 blender with your debit card in December and received your Avion points. In January, you return the blender and get a $300 credit to your personal deposit account, but you also make $500 in debit purchases. For January, you would be awarded points for $200 of your debit spend ($500 in debit purchases minus the $300 return). Alternatively, if in January you do not make any debit purchases and only return the $300 blender, you would not be awarded any points for January and 300 points will be removed from your points account.

Download the Avion Rewards app or select “Join Now” on Avion Rewards. Sign up with your email address and you’re in!

Avion Select members enjoy early access to great deals and savings, including cash back offers from your favourite retailers.

Avion Select members will be able to earn and redeem points later in the year. For now, you can enjoy early access to our cash back offers.

To earn cash back as an Avion Select member, simply log into Avion Rewards on the app or the website and shop available offers.

You can also enable the Avion Rewards ShopPlus browser extension and the cash back offers will come to you while you shop and search online.

Log into the Avion Rewards app and select See Activity. You’ll be able to view your points, cash back and savings history.

Funds are added to your available cash back balance after you have completed your transaction and the return window for the retailer has passed. Check with the retailer for details, but this is usually within 120 days.

Once funds appear in your available cash back balance, you can withdraw them to your bank account using Interac e-Transfer. Simply log in to the Avion Rewards app to view your available cash back balance and follow the onscreen prompts to cash out.

Please note that you will need to have Interac e-Transfer and autodeposit set up in your bank account and a minimum balance of $15 in order to withdraw funds.

You will need to set up Interac e-Transfer for your bank account in order to take advantage of cash savings.

You will need to set up an autodeposit with your bank in order to cash out to your bank account. If you do not have autodeposit set up, please log in to the Avion Rewards app, click on the “More” menu and click “Contact an Advisor”, where an advisor will be able to help you.

No, your cash back does not expire as long as you have an active account with us. After 24 months of inactivity, your account will be closed and any cash back balance will be lost.

No. You can only transfer your available cash back balance to the Interac e-Transfer email address you originally registered with.

You need a balance of $15 or over in order to send an Interac e-Transfer from your available cash back balance.

Interac e-Transfer transactions are usually completed within 24 hours.

Once you submit your Interac e-Transfer request, the transaction should be available in your Cash Back transaction history on the Rewards Activity page.

If you do not see this transaction and are still seeing a positive available cash back balance, try submitting the request again.

For additional help, visit the “Contact an Advisor” page in the “More” menu of the Avion Rewards app and one of our advisors will be able to help.

If you have not received your cash back, it may be because:

  • Ad blockers have prevented the offer from loading. Check your browser to make sure ad blockers are disabled for Avion Rewards
  • You purchased an item that is not included in the retailer’s offer. Check carefully before making your purchase that the offer applies to that specific product
  • You made the purchase through another loyalty program. You can not receive cash back through two programs at once
  • You made the purchase directly on the retailer’s site without clicking on “Load Offer” in Avion Rewards first. Offers are only activated when you click through from Avion Rewards

If you have checked all of the above, you should receive your cash back once the merchant’s return window has passed. Check with the merchant for details, but this is usually within 120 days.

If you have not received your cash back within 120 days, log in to the Avion Rewards app, click on the “More” menu and click “Contact an Advisor”, where an advisor will be able to help you.

You can review our privacy policy here .

To reactivate your account, simply reinstall the Avion Rewards app and sign in with your previous username and password. You may need to reaccept the Terms & Conditions to become an active member of the program.

If your account has been inactive for 24 months, then it will be reactivated as a new account with no earning history.

No. For security reasons, you are not able to change the email address associated with your account.

The available cash back balance is the amount of cash back that can be withdrawn into your bank account.

In order to receive the offer, you need to shop through Avion Rewards. Simply select “Load Offer” and then click through the provided link.

No, not at this time. You must withdraw the full amount in your cash account, once it is $15 or over.

Cash back on eligible offers is issued in Canadian currency. For foreign currency transactions, the cash back earned may be subject to foreign exchange fees, foreign currency fluctuations or other factors that may influence the amount of cash back earned when calculating the Canadian dollar equivalent amount.

For cash back offers, there is a holding period before it is moved to an earned status and available to be cashed out by a member. This holding period varies by merchant as it is dependent upon each merchants return window plus associated processing time which can typically be up to 120 days after the original transaction date. During this period cash back will be reflected in your activity dashboard and can be found under the Pending tab. Once the holding period is complete it will move to the Earned tab within the activity dashboard.

As an Avion Select member, you can link and earn points and cash back at over 230 financial institutions.

Unfortunately, there are some financial institutions that don’t provide a consistent card connection experience, which could affect the ability to earn cash back and points. These financial institutions are not supported by Avion Rewards.

If you have an RBC product, you’re automatically an Elite or Premium member. Our great offers are available to Premium and Elite members when they shop with their RBC product–there is no need to link any cards.

Not a Premium or Elite member? Visit Become a Member to learn how you can elevate your current Avion Rewards membership.

Sometimes, your bank card(s) may become unlinked from your Avion Rewards profile due to an interrupted connection. This may be caused by factors such as multi-factor authentication (MFA), system outages or technical disruptions.

Don’t worry, it’s easy to fix! Simply log in and relink your bank card(s) using one of these three options:

  • Click the notification on the home screen
  • Visit the Manage Cards section of the More menu on the app
  • Visit the Profile & Settings menu on the desktop app

That way you can keep earning cash back on eligible purchases.

Yes! Once you successfully relink, we’ll honour all points or cash back earned on eligible purchases made up to 60 days prior.

Yes, you can remove individual cards or bank accounts from your Avion Rewards profile at any time by selecting the delete icon in the Manage Cards section. Once you’ve removed a card or bank account, you’ll no longer be eligible to earn points or cash back on transactions made using these cards.

To earn points or cash back on eligible purchases, Avion Rewards needs to be able to see that you’ve completed a transaction associated with an active offer. Rest assured; this is done with bank-level security practices to protect your privacy.

We use third-party account aggregation technology to match active offers with the purchases you make using the debit and/or credit card(s) you connect to your Avion Rewards profile. Our service provider uses masked login credentials to protect your privacy while providing us with transaction information from your connected accounts.

Please visit Avion Rewards Card Linking Terms & Conditions .

It’s easy! Simply open Avion Rewards on your mobile app or desktop and shop available offers. Make sure you read the offer details as you may need to load an offer or link a card before earning. You can also enable the Avion Rewards ShopPlus browser extension and cash back deals will be revealed as you shop online.

Avion Select members can redeem points for travel, gift cards, merchandise and charity donations– with more reward options coming soon. Keep shopping and look for offers to earn more points, faster, so you’re ready.

Missing cash back may be caused by one of these reasons:

  • You purchased an item that is not included in the merchant's offer. Check carefully before making your purchase that the offer applies to that specific product
  • You made the purchase through another loyalty program. You cannot receive cash back through two programs simultaneously
  • You made the purchase directly on the merchant’s site without clicking on “Load Offer” in Avion Rewards first. Offers are only activated when you click through from Avion Rewards
  • You made a purchase that required you to have a linked card when your card was actually unlinked. Relink your cards one of two ways: ○ Click the ntification on the home screen or visit the Manage Cards section of the More menu on the mobile app ○ Click the Profile & Settings menu on the desktop app. You're eligible to earn cash back for transactions made up to 60 days prior, as long as you relink.

If you’ve checked all of the above, you should receive your cash back once the merchant’s return window has passed. Check with the merchant for details, but this usually occurs within 120 days.

If you haven’t received your cash back within 120 days, visit the Avion Rewards More menu on the mobile app or Profile & Settings menu on the desktop app and click “Contact an Advisor,” where we’ll be able to help you.

Avion Rewards makes it easy to get rewarded. Here’s how:

Short points for travel? You can use your points AND credit card on the same purchase, so you never miss a deal on hotels, car rentals and more.

Merchandise, gift cards and charity donations can only be redeemed with Avion points but keep an eye out – we often have sales that allow you to redeem using fewer points than usual.

Still need more points? Keep shopping and look for bonus points offers from our retailers. They can help you earn more points, faster.

Maximizing the Canadian RBC Avion Redemption Schedule For Travel

Eric Rosen

In a previous post on RBC's Visa Infinite Avion, TPG contributor Ola briefly described the benefits of the Avion Redemption Schedule. In this post, he elaborates on how it works and how to maximize it. The Redemption Schedule is available exclusively to RBC's "Avion" brand card holders.

Air Travel Redemption Schedule

The Redemption Schedule above is taken directly from RBC Rewards, and is classified into different regions mostly based on distance. Each region is assigned a fixed number of points required to travel to it. Flights must originate either from Canada or the US . So you can't use this schedule to go from Europe to Asia for example. There is a maximum ticket price associated with each region and the required RBC Rewards point level. However, RBC Avion is a hybrid points program , so you can also redeem your points for a fixed value of 100 points per $1, if such a redemption makes more sense for your ticket.

Insider Tips For the most part the chart is pretty easy to read, but there are just some points to clarify:

1. The maximum amount of value you can pull from your points in terms of the redemption schedule's maximum ticket value amounts is 2.33 cents .

2. The maximum price in the schedule does not include taxes . Taxes can either be charged to your credit card or paid using 100 points per $1.

3. The schedule applies to roundtrip economy class flights . However, business class tickets can be booked using the maximum amount in the redemption schedule and the difference between the economy and the business class ticket fare paid by charging it to your credit card or using points at the fixed rate of 100 points per $1.

4. Travel to Bermuda, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, Central America, and Caribbean has two different "required points" levels depending on where the flight originates. These destinations require less points with a lower maximum price when traveling from Eastern Canada/U.S. and some require less when traveling from Western Canada/U.S. For instance, flying to the Caribbean from Eastern Canada would require 45,000 points, but getting to the same destination would require 55,000 points from Western Canada.

5. The maximum price does not mean that you cannot book a ticket that costs more than the maximum price using your points. If you find a flight that is higher in cost, you can redeem the maximum amount in the chart and pay the rest by credit card or at 100 points per $1 .

6. Make sure to calculate the value of each points redemption. If you find a ticket that costs less than the maximum amount, you want to check if it's less than the value of the required points. The way to do this is by dividing the required point amount by 100. So 15,000 points would equal $150. If the ticket you find costs less than $150, then you should not use the redemption schedule, instead you should redeem using RBC's 100 points per $1 rate.

Maximizing the Redemption Schedule If you're an Avion card holder and want to get the best value for your points for travel using the Redemption Schedule, you should keep three things in mind:

1. Book flights as close as possible to the maximum price level. The closer you get to the maximum amount, the more value each point has. For example, if you're redeeming 100,000 points with a maximum price limit of $2000, and you find a flight that costs $1000, each point will equal 1 cent in value. But if you find a flight that costs $2000, each point will equal 2 cents, that's double the value, quite a difference.

2. If a ticket to your final destination costs less than the maximum amount allowed under the redemption schedule limits, you can add as many stopovers as you want to boost the price until you reach the maximum price. Mind you though that the stopovers may affect the taxes you're paying.

3. Try to find flights with low taxes. Even though flights must be booked through RBC travel, always do your own research and call them at 1-877-636-2870 with the exact flights that you want. Look at different options on different days (if your schedule is flexible) and try to find flights with low taxes and fuel surcharges. One of TPG's answers to a Sunday Reader Question mentions some tips on different airlines and their surcharges. Just remember, your flights must originate from Canada or the US.

Booking Rules Here are the program's rules for booking, changes and cancellations, so keep them in mind because they will affect the cost and value of any awards you book through RBC Avion.

1. Booking has to be done through RBC Rewards travel . Booking by phone costs $30 per passenger per flight. Booking online is free.

2. Booking has to be done 14 days in advance of departure date . If you wish to book less than 14 days in advance, you can only book tickets using the fixed-value rate at 100 points per $1.

3. Tickets are non-refundable , meaning that you will not get a statement credit or points back if you end up having to cancel your trip. However, you will get the monetary value back if you buy cancellation and interruption insurance, if you want to have that option.

4. You can change or cancel tickets for a fee . RBC charges $25 per alteration, per airline ticket, on top of what the actual airline charges for the alteration. If you cancel a ticket without insurance you will get a credit on the airline for what the value of the ticket would have been if you had purchased it, minus the change/alteration fees, that you must use within a year.

5. If you wish to purchase points to reach a redemption threshold, you must have at least half the required amount of points for your destination. There is a minimum of 1,000 and maximum of 15,000 for purchasing points. Every 1,000 points cost $40 (2.5 cents each) plus applicable taxes, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you only need a few thousand to get to a particular award.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite Review 2024: A Flexible Travel Credit Card With No Blackout Dates

Updated: Mar 12, 2024, 3:44am

Fact Checked

A straightforward credit card with a flexible travel rewards redemption schedule, especially since you can use Avion points for travel with any airline around the world with no blackout dates. • Earn points on every dollar spent
  • Earn 1.25 points for every dollar spent on eligible travel purchases
  • No blackouts or seat restrictions when using points for flights
  • High annual fee
  • Requires a minimum personal income of $60,000  or a minimum household income of $100,000.
  • Imposes higher acceptance cost on merchants, so might not be accepted at their discretion.

On RBC’s Website

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite card is pretty basic in the grand scope of the Canadian travel credit card landscape. The regular earn rate is low (at 1 point for every dollar spent) and the only accelerated category is eligible travel, which will earn you 25% more. Perks and benefits are also limited to a few types of travel insurance. Considering the annual fee is $120 and you need a minimum personal income of $60,000 to qualify, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite is lacking compared to other travel credit cards at this price point.

That being said, it’s not a bad card. You can get some pretty decent deals from the flight redemption schedule. Plus, the fact that you can use Avion points for any airline in the world with no blackouts or seat restrictions is also beneficial.

  • Earn Avion points on every purchase at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent and 1.25 points per dollar spent on eligible travel.
  • Points do not expire and can be redeemed towards travel with any airline with no blackout periods or seat restrictions.
  • Cardholders can benefit from increased rewards with participating programs at Petro-Canada and Rexall when they link their card.

Earning rewards

Cardholders will earn Avion points on every dollar spent and at a slightly accelerated rate for eligible travel purchases. Aside from travel, there are no accelerated categories, however, there are also no earning caps or limits on how many points you can earn with this credit card.

Redeeming Rewards

Avion points can be redeemed online at avionrewards.com or via the RBC Avion app. As this is a travel credit card, your Avion points will have the best value when redeemed towards flights with the RBC Avion redemption schedule (a rate of $0.02-$0.0233). You can also redeem them through the RBC travel portal at a rate of $0.01 per point. You can also transfer Avion points to Westjet, British Airways and American Airlines. RBC Avion points can also be used for merchandise and gift cards, or they can be put towards your credit card statement or donated to charity.

Rewards Potential

While the flexible redemption schedule for RBC Avion points is great, the earn rates and rewards potential is lacking compared to similar credit cards with high accelerated rates and a strong earning schedule. This means earning points with the RBC Avion Visa Infinite will be slower. That being said, cardholders can still come out ahead. Based on average Canadian spending, Forbes Advisor estimates this card could earn $178.72 in rewards value per year after the annual fee.

  • $0 delivery fees from DoorDash for 12 months
  • Visa Infinite benefits
  • Earn 50 Be Well Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases at Rexall Pharmacies
  • RBC Visa Avion benefits

Interest Rates

  • Regular APR: 20.99%
  • Cash Advance:  22.99%
  • Balance Transfer: 22.99%
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: 2.5%
  • Balance Transfer Fee: 3% of transaction amount
  • Annual Fee: $120
  • Any Other Fees: additional card: $50, dishonoured payment: $45, overlimit fee: $29 (does not apply in Quebec)

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card comes with an $89 annual fee and also earns rewards at a rate of 1 point per dollar spent. While there are no accelerated categories, Aeroplan members can double dip and earn double the points at participating retailers. This card also comes with comprehensive insurance plus the Aeroplan program, which is one of the top rewards programs in Canada. With similar structures, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card is likely a better pick since it does have a lower annual rate.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. PC World Elite Mastercard

The PC World Elite Mastercard is a no-annual-fee credit card aimed at individuals who are more interested in earning free  groceries than redeeming points for travel or shopping rewards. Cardholders earn points at a rate of 30 to 45 points per dollar spent at participating PC Optimum rewards brands and 10 points per dollar spent elsewhere. While the PC World Elite Mastercard does come with travel insurance, it’s not a travel card. If you are in the market for a card where the rewards are best for travel, then the RBC Avion Visa Infinite is the better pick.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite vs. CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card

Another Aeroplan card to compare is the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. At $139 per year, it’s a little pricier than the RBC Avion Visa Infinite card, however, it also has higher earn rates of 1.5 points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, Air Canada travel and electric vehicle charging. All other purchases earn 1 point per dollar spent. Since it is an Aeroplan card, you can also double dip with Aeroplan partners allowing you to earn even faster. It is a little bit more expensive, but the earning and rewards potential is also much higher, meaning it is more lucrative as a travel credit card.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With rewards, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, reward rates and categories, fees, welcome bonuses, and other benefits and features. Keep in mind, what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite card is attractive thanks to the fact that you can earn points across all purchases and the redemption schedule for flights is incredibly flexible. That said, it will be slow going earning points with the majority of purchases at the lower earn rates for this credit card. Plus, perks and benefits outside of travel insurance are lacking. If you are a frequent traveller and are really looking to get into maximizing points and rewards, it may not be the best option for you.

How to book a flight with RBC Avion Rewards points

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

One of the options for redeeming Avion Rewards credit cards is to use your points towards airfare anywhere in the world. Here’s how this works for a fixed-point exchange .

RBC Avion Rewards Points

There are several RBC Avion Rewards credit cards. The one used for this example is the RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card .

With this exceptional offer for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card, you can earn up to 55,000 Avion points:

  • 35,000 Avion points on approval
  • 20,000 Avion bonus points when you spend $5,000 in your first 6 months

You can use your Avion Rewards points for travel or redeem them with other loyalty programs such as :

  • American Airlines AAdvantage
  • British Airways Executive Club (and Qatar Airways Privilege Club)
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles
  • WestJet Rewards

For example, with the current welcome offer, you can get 55,000 British Airways Avios Points or 550 WestJet Dollars .

With the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card, you earn 1 point per dollar and 1.25 points for travel purchases.

And you’ll benefit from a wide range of insurance coverage: Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance, Out-of-Province/Country Emergency Medical Insurance, Rental Vehicle Collision/Loss Damage Insurance, Mobile Device Insurance.

RBC Avion Rewards points can be used to travel anywhere in the world with a round-trip ticket. A one-way trip requires half as many Avion points. Here is the airfare table for a round-trip flight:

On average this equals about 2 cents per Avion point .

How to Book an Airline Ticket with RBC Avion Rewards Points

With 35,000 Avion points, I could afford a plane ticket to Canada or the United States.

From your RBC Online Banking profile, click on the blue Avion Rewards button.

Then, on the Trips page, click on Book a Trip .

Avion Rewards acts like a travel agency. Generally, the prices are the same as the ones found on the sites of the carriers and tour operators.

Its search tool allows you to use RBC Avion Rewards points to book :

  • A car rental
  • Hotel stays
  • Or Vacation Packages

After entering your desired dates and destinations, the results will be displayed. On the left, there is a filter for options.

In this example, the non-stop and no change fee options are selected.

35,000 points can be redeemed on a flight costing up to $750.

In this example, I have chosen a higher class. This exceeds the $750, the remaining balance is added to the taxes and fees.

In my case, the same flight cost about $1,000 on the Air Canada website. This equates to 2.14 cents per point , ($750 divided by 35,000 points) which is excellent!

On the checkout page, RBC shows the points required to book this airline ticket. Any remaining point balance can be used to reduce the tax and fee balance.

For example, 90 points were used to lower the balance by 90 cents. The rest is to be paid with a credit card.

Enter the traveler’s information and make the payment.

An email from RBC Avion Rewards will be sent moments later to confirm. A few minutes later (or a few hours for some), the airline will send confirmation in a separate email. All the details will be there, including the reservation number.

How to Manage an Airline Ticket Purchased with RBC Avion Rewards Points

The booked trip can be found in the My Trips section of the RBC Avion Rewards portal. A link redirects you to the airline’s website.

You will be able to link this reservation to your frequent flyer profile. Here I entered my Aeroplan membership number.

Since I had taken the Comfort fare on Air Canada, I was able to choose a Prefered seat at no charge. This must be done directly on the Air Canada website.

Please note that to change or cancel a flight purchased through the RBC Avion Rewards portal, you must call the RBC Travel Centre directly at 1-877-636-2870.

The airline will not be able to do anything on their end and they will refer you to RBC. Any changes have a cost of $25 for each ticket .

There is also the option to chat with a virtual agent on the RBC site in the Help section.

In addition, if you have eUpgrades with Air Canada, you have the option to apply them at check-in 24 hours prior to your flight.

When your flight is completed, points and qualifications are deposited into your account based on the fare booked.

For example, the Comfort rate booked through RBC gave :

  • Aeroplan Points

This counts towards your Aeroplan Status .

Here are other ways to use RBC Avion points .

Another way to redeem RBC Avion Rewards points for travel

Occasionally, the Avion Rewards site may experience technical difficulties or your flight may not appear in the search results.

At that time, call Avion Rewards Customer Service at 1-800-769-2512.

  • Get an authorization number to book the flight you want (mandatory);
  • Book your own flight directly on the desired airline’s website;
  • Send an e-mail to [email protected] with your authorization number obtained earlier from Customer Service, your name, the number of tickets reserved, proof of purchase and itinerary details.

Avion Rewards will then deduct the required points from your RBC Rewards points account to credit the cost of your airline tickets, according to their airfare table.

How to redeem RBC Avion points for travel

With RBC Rewards, you must book through their travel portal or via the phone, but RBC will charge you $30 for that privilege. While this will annoy many people since you may have specific travel sites you prefer, RBC Rewards is a full-service travel agency, and you can book any of the following:

  • Car rentals
  • Vacation packages

You can use your RBC Avion Rewards points for any seat on any flight, and there are no blackout periods or seat restrictions. Points can be used to pay the entire price of airfare, including taxes. If you don’t have enough points to pay for the whole redemption, you can use as few points as you wish since no minimum redemption is required. The remaining balance will be charged to your RBC Rewards credit card. Unfortunately, RBC Rewards can’t be applied to travel booked on your own.

RBC Avion Air Travel Redemption Schedule

If you have an RBC Avion card (not a RBC Rewards card), you can use your points on the  RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule , which allows you to book flights for fewer points. The catch is, that the redemption has a maximum ticket price and you can’t do a partial redemption. You must have all the points required to make a redemption. Even with the limit in place, you can get a greater value than 1 cent per point via the redemption schedule, which is why it’s appealing. Additionally, you book business or economy class tickets. Here’s the redemption chart and what you’ll get:

The chart may appear complicated but look strictly at the value. Depending on how you redeem your points, you could get a value of up to 2.33 cents per point which is more than double the regular redemption rate. Using the redemption schedule is handy whenever you need to book an expensive flight such as a long-haul. There has been more than one occasion where I’ve had to fly from Toronto to Ottawa at the last minute. Instead of paying the insane $500-600 that Air Canada and WestJet were charging, I redeemed RBC points to help offset my short-haul flight costs.

There are no blackout dates, and every seat is available on every carrier with the Redemption Schedule, so it can be easy to value. Quite often, I’ll compare the cost of a flight on  Aeroplan  to RBC before deciding which points I should use.

The RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule and the ability to convert your RBC Rewards points to other loyalty programs is why I rank RBC Rewards ranks #2 on my list of  Canada’s best bank travel rewards programs .

How to redeem Avion Rewards points for gift cards

RBC Rewards has a wide variety of merchants where you can use your RBC points for gift cards. Unfortunately, there are different values depending on the gift card you redeem. Here are some of the redemptions and merchants available.

  • 1,400 RBC Rewards points = $10 Amazon gift card
  • 3,500 RBC Rewards points = $25 Bath & Body Works gift card
  • 3,500 RBC Rewards points = $25 Beer Store gift card
  • 7,000 RBC Rewards points = $50 Best Buy gift card
  • 10,000 RBC Rewards points = $100 Air Canada gift card
  • 10,000 RBC Rewards points = $100 Fairmont Hotels & Resorts card
  • 14,000 RBC Rewards points = $100 Food Basics gift card
  • 35,000 RBC Rewards points = $250 Golf Town gift card

Since the value of each gift card is different, you need to calculate the value of one point so you know what you’re getting. To do that, you take the dollar value of the redemption and multiply it by 100. You then take that number and divide it by the points required. For example, with Food Basics, it would be $100 X 100 / 14,000 = .71 cents per point.

What you’ll quickly notice is that travel gift cards are usually worth 1 cent per point, whereas any other merchant is .71 cents each. RBC often has gift cards redemption bonuses (10% to 30% bonus) including travel related gift cards that make them an attractive option. There was a good promo on Petro Canada gift cards one summer, so I cashed in a bunch of points and gave the gift cards to my dad.

How to redeem Avion Rewards points for financial rewards

When logged into RBC Rewards, if you look under the Shop & Redeem menu, you’ll see there’s an option to use your points for RBC financial rewards. Assuming you have financial products with RBC, you can use your points for the following:

  • Add to your existing investments
  • Mortgage payments
  • Repayment to your line of credit.

It takes 12,000 RBC points to get $100 in financial products which gives you a value of .83 cents per point. At first glance that may seem like a lot, but think about the long term. With mortgage and line of credit payments, you’re basically paying off your loan earlier which you immediately save on the interest. If you’re adding to your investments, you can take advantage of  compound interest  which could make your redemption very valuable in the long run.

If you use your points for a financial reward that’s put towards your  RRSP , you could also get a tax break. Putting in your  TFSA  would allow you to invest with tax free gains. It’s a win-win situation, but you won’t see the reward for many many years.

Redeeming Avion Rewards points for merchandise, statement credits, and charitable donations

The final three redemption options for your RBC Rewards points are merchandise, statement credits, and charitable donations. Although the RBC Rewards merchandise catalogue is quite large and there are some quality products available, the number of additional points required for the value is not worth it at all. I would advise avoiding using your points for merchandise. That said, there are occasionally discounts on merchandise redemptions, so sometimes the transactions aren’t a terrible deal.

Using your points for a statement credit is an even lower value. It takes 17,200 points to get $100 off your statement. That means your points would be worth .58 cents per point. Unless you’re facing financial difficulties, you’re better off redeeming your points for anything else.

RBC Avion points   transfer partners

I love programs that let you convert points to other loyalty programs since it adds flexibility and value. Avion Rewards has one of the most extensive and valuable lists of conversion partners when it comes to Canada’s bank travel reward programs. American Express Membership Rewards is better, in my opinion, but RBC Rewards isn’t far behind.

Here is the list of programs you can convert Avion points to, but note that except WestJet Rewards, only Avion cardholders can transfer their points to the following partners:

  • WestJet Rewards : 1,000 RBC points = $10 WestJet dollars
  • Hudson’s Bay Rewards : 1,000 RBC points = 2,000 HBC Rewards points (worth $10 at Hudson’s Bay)

If you are an Avion cardholder you can also benefit from these conversion options:

  • American Airlines : 10,000 RBC points = 7,000 AAdvantage miles
  • Cathay Pacific Asia Miles : 10,000 RBC Points = 10,000 Asia Miles
  • British Airways : 10,000 RBC points = 10,000 Avios miles

It’s hard to put an exact value on airline miles since there are so many variables, but generally speaking, their value is around a minimum of 1.5¢ per mile for economy tickets. Often you can get double the value if you’re booking in business class. That said, WestJet Rewards uses a dollar system, so they have a fixed value.

It’s a good idea to log into RBC Rewards often since they have many redemption promotions throughout the year, which boost your points’ value. In addition, RBC Rewards had a few transfer bonuses (10% to 30% bonus points) for Westjet, Asia Miles, British Airways Avios Miles, and American Airlines AAdvantage Miles. That meant you got extra value when transferring your points to a partner.

Of particular interest is how you can transfer your points to WestJet dollars. Nothing stops you from holding an RBC Avion card and the RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard. Both cards come with good sign up bonuses so you could quickly rack up those WestJet dollars. For example, the RBC Avion card typically has a welcome bonus of 15,000 points which can be transferred to WestJet for $150 WestJet dollars. The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard’s standard bonus is $250 and a companion voucher. When you combine the two, you’ll have $400 in WestJet dollars without having to spend much. No purchase is required to get the bonus with the Avion card, and you only need one purchase with the WestJet Card.

Do RBC Rewards points expire?

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about when RBC Rewards points expire. I have confirmed that  RBC Avion points don’t expire  as long as you have an active eligible RBC Royal Bank credit card. If you cancel your card, you have 90 days to redeem them before losing them. The first-in, first-out rule you may have read about online is an old outdated article. RBC really needs to delete that page. If you’re unsure when your points expire, you could always call customer service to confirm.

How RBC Avion compares to others

RBC Avion Rewards is easily one of the best travel loyalty programs of Canada’s big five banks. There are many reasons why I rank RBC Rewards so high, including:

  • No blackout dates
  • No minimum number of points to redeem
  • A fixed points flight program
  • Many transfer partners to convert points to
  • Many promotions for redemptions
  • Value of points

In my opinion, RBC Rewards is only second to  American Express Membership Rewards . American Express holds the first place because RBC Rewards lacks an option to book travel on your own (you can only book through their portal) and because RBC Rewards credit cards don’t really have any increased earn rates which limit how fast you can earn points. You can also read my reviews of  CIBC Rewards ,  BMO Rewards ,  TD Rewards  and  Scene+  to see how RBC Rewards compares.

How to earn RBC Avion Rewards

To earn RBC Rewards, you must have a credit card account that earns you RBC Rewards. As you can imagine, the easiest ways to earn points are via credit card sign up bonuses and everyday purchases you make on your RBC Rewards credit card. Currently, there are six personal credit cards and two business credit cards that will earn you RBC Rewards points. To make things a bit complicated, RBC Rewards has two tiers of RBC Rewards points: regular and Avion RBC Rewards points. Points from an Avion account have more redemption options, and these options are the most valuable ones. With this in mind, the RBC Visa Infinite Avion card is arguably the best card to earn Avion points and is one of the  best RBC credit cards .

RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

  • $120 annual fee
  • 35,000 Avion points on approval
  • 20,000 Bonus points when you spend $5,000 in the first 6 months
  • Earn 1.25 Avion points for every $1 spent on travel purchases
  • Earn 1 Avion point per $1 on all other purchases
  • Comprehensive travel insurance
  • Mobile device insurance up to $1,500

The sign up bonus for new cardholders is typically 15,000 points which isn’t much compared to some of the  best travel credit cards in Canada . That said, the  RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card  often has promotions where the welcome bonus is 25,000 – 35,000 points, and the annual fee for the first year is waived. Whenever a promo like that comes around, it’s worth signing up for the card.

The earn rate of 1.25 points per $1 spent on travel is decent, while the 1 RBC Reward point earned per dollar spent on all other purchases, including bill payments, is pretty common. Here’s something that many people don’t realize. You don’t need to make any purchases to get the bonus. The terms and conditions say you get it after the first statement.

Another little-known trick is that you can  switch  from the RBC WestJet World Elite Mastercard to the RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card and vice versa. This is useful if you’re not able to maximize your points and want to try something new. That said, be sure to use up your points before you make any changes.

The RBC Visa Infinite Avion Card also provides good travel insurance when travelling outside Canada. Not only do you get travel medical, but you’ll also be covered for trip cancellation/interruption, delayed and lost baggage, hotel/motel burglary and more. Obviously, some exclusions apply, so read the certificate of insurance for complete terms.

Link to your Petro-Points card

RBC has a deal in place with Petro-Canada where you can save 3 cents per litre at Petr-Canada, 20% extra Petro-Points, and 20% extra RBC Rewards points.

To be eligible, you just need to add your Petro-Points number to your RBC online banking account. You would link your Petro-Points card to all of your eligible RBC debit or credit cards.

Final thoughts

Avion Rewards is one of the  best bank travel rewards programs . The RBC Visa Infinite Avion card may not give you the best signup bonus or have the highest earn rate, but there’s no denying that once you have the points, they’re easy to use. There are no blackout dates and no minimum points required to make a redemption, so you’ll never run into any issues using your points. Barry choi, What about outright flight cancellation by company with no booking possibility ? this happened to me 5 years ago and Avion card could not do anything!

When saying trip cancellation … talking from whom??

What do you mean by company with no booking possibility? With fight cancellation, it only applies to reasons that are outlined in your insurance policy.

When should I pay for a flight as opposed to redeeming points. I want to go to Vancouver – Honolulu -L.A. – Vancouver. Points 45000 plus $266 Cash $960 Plse advise and thx,Lawrence

45,000 Rewards points would be worth $450 + $266 for taxes = $716. Since the value of your redemption via the fixed travel program is $960, you come out ahead using the fixed program.

' src=

How much is 28906 rbcrewards point please

10,000 points = $100 so you have $289 at the base value. Your points are worth more if you use the RBC Rewards Air Travel Redemption Schedule

' src=

Hi. I have 10500 pts and I purchased my ticket for $2000 whose base fair is $1400. What’s the best way to go with the schedule?

You need 15,000 points to make a claim within or to an adjacent Province/Territory/U.S. State. That fare has a maximum base price of $350 so you can’t use the fixed redemption schedule.

you could just 10,000 points to redeem $100.

Sorry Barry. I have 105000 points. I missed a zero. Can you please update your response?

If you’ve already paid for your ticket, you can’t use the air redemption schedule. Assuming you didn’t 100K points gets you a flight from any major gateway in Canada/U.S. to destinations in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific, Middle East, Africa, South America

Hi Barry, thanks for the article and for all the Q&A work as well !!

I’m looking at making the switch to Amex. I have 160k reward points I’ve saved up over the years. Looking to cash out or use these points up somehow with the best value. Appears as tho 10,000 points for $100 value is about the best offer from RBC rewards? Also, do you know if these points expire if I got rid of my RBC Avion card?

Yup, 10K points for $100 is indeed the best value. You lose all your points if you cancel your card. Your best bet would be to transfer your points to WestJet Dollars or hotels.com giftcards as they have good value.

' src=

I product switched to the RBC British Airways Visa almost 4 months ago. My account has remained in good standing however, I haven’t received the welcome bonus of 15k points yet. I have called RBC multiple times and each time I have been told that BA awards the points but when I speak to BA, they say that RBC needs to award the points. Do you have any idea who should be awarding the points? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

In theory, it should be BA that actually issues the points but RBC would have to authorize it.

I would advise escalating the case with RBC first to see if that resolves anything.

' src=

If I wish to use my Avion Rewards points to pay off my credit card bill, is it straight 100 points/per every $1?

No, it takes 172 points to claim $1 in statement credit so you’re devaluing your points quite a bit if you were to go that route.

' src=

Is this card best to earn miles to book a points first class flight from Vancouver to Tokyo?

' src=

I just noticed RBC is offering 50% more points if converted to Avios, does the same offer ever happen with AA points?

The 50% bonus is quite rare. I’ve never seen it with AA.

' src=

Is it worth it to convert your Avion points to BA Avios given the 50% bonus on until Dec 15th? I live in Vancouver and typically fly to Hawaii in Winter and Europe in summer. Your insight is much appreciated.

If you plan on using those BA points, then yes, it’s a great deal. That said, I’m not sure which airlines you can use BA Avios points to get you from Vancouver to Hawaii.

' src=

Hi, is it worth buying the air Canada gift cards at a 10% discount? Are they easy to use and are there any hidden charges / rules to these we should know about?

Buying the gift cards gives you a guaranteed discount of 10%, but you might get better value if you used your points on the fixed travel program. It’s honestly a personal choice but I imagine you wouldn’t have any issues with using the gift cards. As far as I know there are no additional charges or rules, but read the fine print before you commit.

' src=

Do my RBC rewards expire at any point

Not as long as you have a credit card account that earns you RBC Rewards active with them that’s in good standing.

' src=

RBC Reward points expire after 3 years on a First In, First out basis.

That is incorrect. If you refer to handbook, the first page states that RBC points don’t expire.

https://www.rbcroyalbank.com/credit-cards/travel/rbc-visa-platinum-avion/rbc-visa-platinum-avion-benefits-guide.pdf

The reference to points expiring after 3 years is old and should have been removed from the website.

my mistake, you are correct. I believe my knowledge was outdated.

' src=

I just logged into my RBC Rewards and I see that I have a – 69K point balance. How is it possible to end up with a negative reward points balance?? I have never even used my rewards and forgot that it was even available. Any help would be appreciated.

You’d have to check with RBC about that

' src=

Do you think it is worth keeping the RBC Infinite Avion card beyond the first year? Is it worth the $120 per annum annual fee considering that I am also paying fees for amex gold card and BMO cash back card?

Thanks for your insight

Hi Viviene,

I personally wouldn’t keep three credit cards with annual fees. Of the three cards you mentioned, I’d probably drop the BMO cash back card but that’s because I prefer travel points. Who do you bank with? Do they waive the fee for any cards?

I bank with BMO but it’s a joint account and the waiver goes towards my partner’s BMO MC world elite card. I figure the cashback we get each year more than pays for the annual fee.

What does RBC Avion offer that justifies its fee? It seems as if it would take a long time to build up any significant number of points.

Well it’s really for you to decide based on your spending. E.g. if you moved all the spending from your cash back card to the RBC card, you could more in points for flights than what the annual fee would cost you. I think the RBC Rewards fixed flight travel chart offers good value especially if you’re looking at short haul flights. However, that may be redundant since you have the Amex Gold which also has a fixed points program.

How would you compared the two fixed points program? I tend to focus on transferring my Amex points to Avios and haven’t really looked at the Amex fixed points program. I also feel that the Amex Gold has more to offer than the RBC card in terms of travel insurance and flexibility on how to use points. But I may be wrong….

Both programs have their sweet spots. Amex is arguably better since you have more transfer partners. The Amex Gold has a slightly higher earn rate on travel. but RBC Rewards has occasional promos where if you transfer your points to BA, you get 25 or 50% more points.

I do agree that the Gold Amex is a better overall card.

' src=

Is there anyway I can browse through options for say a vacation package, that would be qualified for if I had 150000 points? For example my 150000 points would allow me to go to Cayo Largo Cuba, or Puerto Plata Dominican Republic or Cozumel Mexico…you get the idea.

It doesn’t give you an option to search for results based on X points. All really allows you to do is search by price from low to high after you’ve selected a country.

' src=

I have always been a fan of the RBC Avion program until today when I tried to change a departing flight and was told that all the flights I chose were “not available” although there were clearly seats for sale on both the airline website AND Expedia. RBC only offered a few very poor flight options. I thought “any flight” meant “any flight”. I have never encountered this before. We ended up buying new flights from the airline after spending over 30 minutes on hold, suffering through a painfully frustrating conversation with an agent and draining the battery on my phone.

' src=

I’m going to bail on Avion after learning that they recognize an Air Canada fuel surcharge of 570$ per ticket to europe in a time of extended, sustained low fuel prices. It was going to cost me 1100$= in fees when flights can be purchased outright for just over 1600$.

Value lost due to poor decisions at Avion….. adios!

That’s Air Canada’s fault, not Avion.

' src=

How long does it take to convert RBC points into Asia Miles? Is it instantaneous or do you have to wait 6-8weeks?

It usually takes 4-5 days for the transfer to Asia Miles

' src=

I have around 200k in avion points. I am trying to figure out the best option for using them as we are moving to Europe for a year. I looked into the flights but almost 1/2 goes to the taxes, etc. I was wondering if it was best to use them while we are there for short trips. So, what would be the best value? (ie rental car, hotels, ?), anything else?

Points for flights to Europe are typically of low value due to the fees. Using them within Europe is also not a good value since you wouldn’t be able to use the fixed travel program. You could use the RBC travel portal when you’re abroad and book points at 10,000 points = $100 in travel.

Alternatively, you could convert your points to WestJet dollars at a 1:1 ratio. On occasion, there are promos where you can convert to hotels.com giftcards which can be a good value.

' src=

Hi Barry, we have ~250,000 RBC Avion points and I’m trying to maximize getting to FCO (Rome) this summer from YYZ (Toronto.) We also have 90,000 in Aeroplan.

Traveling with a 15 month old so really wanted to optimize for lie-down seats. But they are pricey. ($8000 for two seats on AC’s direct flights.)

Can you suggest a way to optimize our points to make it work?

Flying from Toronto to Europe is one of the worst redemptions regardless of the program due to high airport taxes. With Aeroplan, you need 110K points for a return business flight so that won’t really work.

For RBC, I don’t think you can use your points for business so that doesn’t really help.

The best value I can think of right now and this is honestly not the greatest solution is to consider transferring your points to WJD. If you have the WestJet World Elite Mastercard, you can use the companion voucher for premium economy. I just booked two flights from YYZ to LGW for $2400. Of course, you would still need to get a flight to Rome and you’d only be redeeming your points at a 1% value.

IMO, you’re better off paying cash for this route and saving your points for later.

' src=

Help. We have 175000 Avion points. Looking to use them from YVR to LHR. If I use the points for 3 fares return it looks like another $700 each on top !!!! With Aur Canada. Flights in September are approximately $700 each return. Can you give any advice. I have not checked if BA charges the same.

Flights to Europe are a terrible value due to the high taxes. You’re better off saving your points for a different redemption.

' src=

Is it possible to use Avion points to pay for an upgrade on an already booked flight? Is it worth it? Looking at this for a flight from Houston to Auckland on Air New Zealand.

You’d have to call and ask. You definitely can’t do upgrades via the RBC Travel portal.

' src=

Is there a time limit to redeem accumulated points? And I wld like to purchase a gift card for electronics?

Your points don’t expire as long as you have an active RBC credit card that’s in good standing.

' src=

I am a bit lost with car rental points… if my rental was $800.00 how many points would I need

That falls under travel so it would cost you 80,000 points.

' src=

Barry, Can RBC Avion Visa Infinite cardholders redeem for a Premium Economy class seat instead of Economy class? Thanks!

RBC Rewards is a full service travel agency so you can book premium economy, but it’ll cost you more points. It’s unlikely you’d be able to book premium under the Air Travel Redemption Schedule since the price would exceed the maximum base price.

Barry, RBC Avion Visa Infinite redemption schedule From Canada to Hong Kong: 100,000 points. Maximum ticket price: $2,000.

Normally the Air Canada Premium Economy ticket from Canada to Hong Kong costs close to (less than) $2,000. It’s not worth to redeem Economy class, which is about $1,000 or less. That’s why I would like to know whether I can redeem Premium Economy class or not.

As long as the base ticket price is below $2,000, you should be able to redeem a premium economy flight using your RBC Rewards points.

' src=

Hi Barry, I’m totally torn between Scotia Passport and RBC AVion? Which one do you really prefer if we plan on going US visits and Asian Countries as well?

Both cards a bit different. The Scotiabank card is a good all-in-one card since it has no forex fees, but the RBC Avion has a fixed points travel chart which can be of good value. Since you’re based in Canada, Air Canada/Aeroplan cards are good for US travel thanks to the new Buddy Pass. WestJet companion vouchers can also be handy.

' src=

Barry, early thanks for answering my question. I am contemplating on utilizing approx. 111,000 Avion points for Best Western gift cards. I presume the gift cards are in Canadian funds? Travel contemplated is in the U.S. once the ban is lifted. How is the difference in currency handled by U.S. based Best Westerns?

The gift cards are only worth it if you’re getting an equal value to your RBC Avion points. E.g. 1,000 points = $10. Yes, the cards would come in CAD. If you use them outside of Canada, you would be subject to the exchange rate at the hotel which will definitely have a markup.

' src=

Avion $350 air fare fee for interprovincial travel is useless to many Canadians outside the Upper / Lower Canada belt. Many interprovincial one way tickets are $350 or more. I’ve amassed nearly a million dollars over the years on my Avion card, and travel with my family of 6, using the points. I always have to wait for airlines to post sale prices before I can use the points, because their reward amount is set too low. Its not a cheap card either. I’ve never complained, but its been the same price system for over 10 years. Hello! Inflation!

Paying the taxes on flights is also a bummer. I’ve often just bought sale priced flights with cash, because the Avion rewards taxes where close to half the flight cash amount. Didn’t see the point in wasting them.

' src=

How do I book a business class seat? We’d like to go back to Europe next year and want to fly business class. I have over 300,000 points with Avion.

Two years ago we booked two business class seats after transferring points to British Airlines, What a nightmare!

I swore that I’d move to another point card to get better service, connections, etc.

Please help.

RBC has a travel rewards portal where you’d book your flights and then redeem your points.

Aeroplan is a lot easier these days, it’s worth considering switching to a card that earns you Aeroplan points.

' src=

We have 215000 points with RBC and travel to Mexico, US and are thinking of going from Edmonton to Amsterdam and returning to Edmonton from Rome. What are the best way to use our points. Is transferring points to Westjet a better deal than buying Westjet gift cards .

To maximize your value, you should use the RBC Air Trave Redemption schedule – https://www.rbcrewards.com/#!/travel/redemptionSchedule

It’ll cost 65,000 points to get to Europe with a max ticket value of $1,300. That works out to 2 cents a point which is double the normal value.

Ad for WJD, it’s a better value to transfer your points directly instead of buying gift cards

' src=

Any luck with product switching lately and receiving the welcome bonus of 15,000 points for Avion Infinite?

Darn. Seems to still work for WJ MC. Perhaps makes sense to PS to a no AF card and then cycle back.

' src=

I recently “purchased” airline tickets using Avion points. Unfortunately I mistakenly selected the Flexible Points Pricing and as a result ended up using roughly twice as many points as would have been needed under the Fixed Points Pricing. The difference is somewhere around 35,000 points. I requested that Avion reverse this mistake but was advised that it was their policy to not allow such a change. I requested to talk to a manager, but they basically advised that this wasn’t going to happen (they told me it would take 6 weeks). Any advice.

Unfortunately, it’s unlikely they’ll reverse the charges. This happens with all points programs.

' src=

Hi Barry… I have over 1 Mil points… and on flight can I upgrade to Exec or 1st Class with my points ?? I don’t see it anywhere when i am looking at the booking … Any ideas. Thanks Mike

In the RBC Avion travel portal, you should be able to choose premium economy or business class seats for your flights.

' src=

What are the pros & cons of flex points vs flexible points booking w Avion? How do I know which we should use?

All rbc rewards and avion rewards points can be used on any travel purchase made through the RBC travel portal.

' src=

I have been reading your awesome feedback from Avion customers! I recently tried to receive information from the RBC Rewards program call centre and it was horrific – unprofessional and unknowledgeable agents, transferring me first to Expedia and then to Air Canada. They wore me down. I then went online and read reviews on the performance of the program – from what I saw, every customer who had to make a change on their travel booking experienced exactly the frustration I did.. Has this program gone down hill in recent years on their customer service assistance?

The program itself is fine, but I imagine every travel operator is experiencing customer service issues. I guess the real problem is knowing who to call. If you book travel through the Avion travel portal, technically speaking, you will go through them to make changes even if you booked an Air Canada flight.

Hi Barry, I’m unsure whether to use my avion infinite Visa card to pay a Europe bike tour purchase as the surcharge is 4 percent or pay with an e-transfer. The foreign currency rate I’m billed at was 1.49. I look forward to your response. Also, if I pay with an e-transfer will I have any travel protection? Thanks in advance! Barbara

Hey Barbara,

A 4% surcharge is quite a bit. That said, an e-transfer may come with fees too. I personally would just choose what’s cheaper. That said, if you don’t pay with your credit card, you don’t get any protection if you need to cancel your tour for a qualifying reason.

Hi Barry, Thank you for your responses. I really appreciate it! Barbara

Regarding financial rewards, more specifically applying a credit to an existing RBC mortgage: is the cash value going to be considered a lump sum payment or something else? I ask this because the options to pay down a mortgage faster are limited to double-up payments upon each scheduled payment, and one lump sum payment (aka prepayment) of up to 10% of the initial principal per year. I already used my yearly lump sum and I’m concerned that I wouldn’t be allowed to redeem my Avion points towards my mortgage or I may be allowed to do so, but I could be issued a penalty for not following the rules. I couldn’t find anything online about what the value of the points redeemed is considered to be.

Hey Stephanie,

If I had to guess, it would count as a prepayment. You’d have to call them to find out for sure.

Too old to travel. So thinking of using my Avion points to buy RBC merchandise. How can I see what is available if I don’t do any banking transactions on a computer?

You need to go to the RBC Avion website to see what items are available for redemption – https://www.avionrewards.com/index.html

On the web site that I see, the first thing that they want is your Visa number. And that is exactly why we don’t do money matters on line.

Avion Rewards is a credit card rewards program. Using your credit card number is how you log in.

Hello I redeemed 130,000 points for a flights to Barcelona from Toronto and had to cancel. What is the value of these points so that I can make a travel insurance claim

That’s a value of $1,300.

Hi Barry, Thought you might be interested in my experience being transitioned from HSBC World Elite MC to RBC Avion Visa. Since I don’t have anything that spells out the fees, conversion rate, etc. I called the RBC conversion team. They are waiving the $120 annual fee for the first year and that’s it. Although the HSBC card did not charge the 2.5% foreign conversion fee, the RBC card does. The extra points which HSBC gave for travel expenses are likewise not available with the RBC card. It seems to me that if I wanted this card I would be better off applying for it and getting the bonus. Very disappointing.

You should have received paperwork about the details of your new card. HSBC World Elite MC holders being switched the Avion Visa Infinite will still get no FX fees on their card.

You’re correct about losing the travel credit after the first year.

The Avion card is a clear downgrade, I mention a few other options in this article – https://www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/personal-finance/household-finances/article-hsbc-clients-may-not-love-their-new-rbc-credit-cards-but-rbcs-avion/

Thanks Barry. I don’t subscribe to the Globe but I assume you suggested the Scotiabank Passport Visa as an alternative. I don’t want to take up your time with all this but I applied for the Scotia card and it developed into a real mess. I’m still trying to find out what happened, currently waiting to hear back from their Escalated Customer Concern team.

I suggested a few.

The Amex Cobalt for high earn rate, Rogers Mastercard for Costco (if you use Rogers), and Platinum for high end travel benefits. If you want no FX, the Scotiabank card is indeed good, but I like the EQ Bank card cuz it has no fees.

I’ll def check into the EQ card, thanks again.

RBC’s Upcoming Transition of HSBC Rewards to RBC Avion Rewards

As first reported by Rewards Canada , there’s more information available about the upcoming transition from HSBC Rewards to RBC Avion Rewards . After publishing this article, we’ve received additional information from RBC, and have added it below.

While the exact conversion rates are still not known, we have more insight into what we might expect, which can help you decide what to do with your existing HSBC Rewards balance.

More Details Regarding the HSBC Rewards to RBC Avion Rewards Transition

RBC has provided more insight into what customers can expect in the upcoming transition from HSBC Rewards to RBC Avion Rewards .

As a reminder, your HSBC Rewards points will be converted to RBC Avion Rewards points as part of RBC’s acquisition of HSBC Canada . The acquisition is set to be completed by the end of March 2024.

Previously, RBC has stated that the transfer will be at a comparable ratio, but has remained mum on the exact transfer ratio. Without knowing the rate at which your HSBC Rewards will be converted to RBC Avion Rewards, it’s been difficult to make a decision whether to redeem them now or wait for the conversion.

However, we now have some more insight into what cardholders can expect, and if it turns out to be the case, it should be sufficient to guide your decisions on whether to redeem now or wait.

First off, HSBC Canada customers won’t receive confirmation of the conversion value until after it’s taken place.

Clients will receive a communication with more information about the conversion of their points within one week of migration.

We can infer that this is because some cardholders will be transitioned to products that earn RBC Avion points at the Elite tier, while others will be transitioned to products that earn RBC Avion points at the Premium tier. It seems that there won’t be blanket conversion rates that apply to everyone, and rather, it will be unique to each cardholder’s situation.

Despite not knowing exact conversion values, there’s now more information available that should help guide your decision on whether to redeem your HSBC Rewards points now or to wait for the conversion, which we’ll discuss in detail below.

RBC has shared that HSBC Canada clients will receive equal or greater value with their converted points based on flexible redemptions.

We can share that all HSBC Bank Canada clients migrated to RBC will receive an Avion points balance that will have equal or higher value in the flexible travel redemption category in the same way they book their travel today.

As a reminder, HSBC Rewards can be flexibly redeemed against travel at a rate of 0.5 cents per point, while RBC Avion points at the Elite tier can be flexibly redeemed against travel booked through the Avion Rewards platform at a rate of 1 cent per point.

Therefore, for those being transitioned from an HSBC product to an RBC Avion product, we project that the minimum conversion rate might be 2 HSBC Rewards points = 1 RBC Avion Elite point.

With HSBC Rewards earned on either the HSBC +Rewards Mastercard or the HSBC Travel Rewards Mastercard, you can also flexibly redeem points against travel at a rate of 0.5 cents per point.

Since you’ll be transitioned to the RBC ION Visa, which earns RBC Avion points at the Premium tier that can be flexibly redeemed against travel booked through the Avion Rewards platform at a rate of 0.58 cents per point, we project that the minimum conversion rate might be 1.16 HSBC Rewards = 1 RBC Avion Premium point.

It’s worth reiterating that the exact transfer ratios aren’t known, and won’t be known until after the conversion has taken place. However, if these ratios turn out to be true, or maybe even better, we have more guidance on whether it’s best to redeem now or wait.

There is no specified date for the conversion to take place; however, once it does, you’ll have full access to your new batch of RBC Avion Rewards points within a week.

Should You Redeem HSBC Rewards Points Now or Wait?

Assuming that the estimated minimum conversion rates are accurate, let’s take a look at whether it’s in your best interest to redeem now or wait until later.

However, keep in mind that the exact transfer ratio won’t be known until after the conversion, so if you’d rather lock in a redemption with 100% certainty, you’ll want to redeem your HSBC Rewards points now.

As a reminder, the last day to transfer HSBC Rewards to airline partners is February 29, 2024.

Customers being transitioned to the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†

If you’re being transitioned from the HSBC World Elite Mastercard, your options for redeeming HSBC Rewards currently include the following:

  • Redeem against travel purchases at a rate of 0.5 cents per point
  • Transfer to British Airways Executive Club at a 25:10 ratio
  • Transfer to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at a 25:9 ratio
  • Transfer to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles at a 25:8 ratio

After the transition, you’ll earn RBC Avion points at the Elite tier, which can be redeemed as follows:

  • Redeem against travel purchases at a rate of 1 cent per point
  • Redeem for flights on the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule for up to 2.33 cents per point
  • Transfer to British Airways Executive Club at a 1:1 ratio
  • Transfer to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles at a 1:1 ratio
  • Transfer to American Airlines AAdvantage at a 1:0.7 ratio
  • Transfer to WestJet Rewards at a 100:1 ratio

Depending on how you’d like to redeem your points, it should result in the same or better value if you choose to wait for the conversion.

To illustrate this, we’ll use an example of someone with 105,000 HSBC Rewards points who’s transitioning from the HSBC World Elite Mastercard to the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†. Plus, we’ll assume that their HSBC Rewards will be converted to RBC Avion points at the Elite tier at a 2:1 ratio.

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

If you tend to redeem points flexibly against travel purchases, then it makes no difference to redeem now or later.

105,000 HSBC Rewards points can be redeemed for $525 against travel purchases. If they’re converted at a 2:1 ratio, you’d be able to flexibly redeem 52,500 RBC Avion Elite points against $525 worth of travel.

However, it’s worth noting that with HSBC Rewards, you can book travel directly with any vendor, and then redeem points against charges posted to your statement. Booking this way ensures you’re eligible for earning points with airlines and hotels, and also makes you eligible for status qualifying activity.

On the other hand, to redeem RBC Avion points for travel, you must book through the Avion Rewards platform, which may limit your ability to earn points from airline and hotel programs, and could also make you ineligible for elite qualifying activity.

If you plan to make use of the RBC Air Travel Redemption Schedule for booking flights, it’s likely in your best interest to wait for the conversion, since you can unlock more value for your points by doing so.

That’s because you can redeem RBC Avion points at the Elite tier for up to 2.33 cents per point with the Air Travel Redemption Schedule.

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

If you planned on transferring your HSBC Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club or Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, it’s likely in your best interest to wait for the conversion.

105,000 HSBC Rewards points is equal to 42,000 British Airways Avios, or 33,600 Asia Miles.

Assuming that 105,000 HSBC Rewards will be converted to 52,500 RBC Avion points at the Elite tier, you could then convert them into 52,500 British Airways Avios or 52,500 Cathay Pacific Asia Miles.

However, if there’s a transfer bonus from RBC Avion to either program after the conversion has happened, you’d wind up with an even better rate.

It’s worth noting that 52,500 RBC Avion points at the Elite tier could also be transferred to 36,750 AAdvantage miles, or 525 WestJet dollars. AAdvantage is otherwise quite difficult to access, and there are some great redemption options available in the program, so be sure to consider it as an option, too.

If you have your eyes set on a Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer redemption, you’ll want to make your transfer before February 29, 2024. After that point, it will no longer be possible to transfer Canadian points currencies to KrisFlyer, aside from Marriott Bonvoy points, since RBC Avion Rewards doesn’t have it as a transfer partner.

Customers being transitioned to the RBC® ION Visa

If you’re being transitioned to an RBC® ION Visa , then your HSBC Rewards points will be converted to RBC Avion points at the Premium tier, which are less flexible than RBC Avion points at the Elite tier.

It shouldn’t make a difference whether you redeem your HSBC Rewards points against travel purchases now, or wait until later, since you’ll likely wind up with the same rate.

Plus, you can also choose to transfer your RBC Avion points at the Premium tier to WestJet Rewards, which could result in a higher redemption value.

However, keep in mind that if you eventually get an eligible RBC Avion credit card, such as the RBC® Avion Visa Platinum, RBC® Avion Visa Infinite†, or RBC® Avion Visa Infinite Privilege†, you can convert your RBC Avion points at the Premium tier into RBC Avion points at the Elite tier at a 1:1 ratio.

Therefore, if you find yourself in this position, it’s likely in your best interest to wait for the conversion, and then plan on adding an RBC Avion credit card product to your wallet in the future to unlock more value from your points.

Customers being transitioned to the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite Privilege†

Lastly, if you’re being transitioned to an RBC® Avion Visa Infinite Privilege† , you’ll also be moved to a card that earns RBC Avion points at the Elite tier.

However, one unique feature of the RBC® Avion Visa Infinite Privilege† is that you can redeem RBC Avion points for business class and First Class tickets at a rate of 2 cents per point.

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

If you plan on redeeming points this way, it’s in your best interest to wait for the conversion, since you’ll be able to unlock more value from your points by doing so.

For example, assuming 125,000 HSBC Rewards points are converted to 62,500 RBC Avion points at the Elite tier, you’d then be able to redeem them for up to $1,250 (CAD) worth of business class and First Class flights  at 2 cents per point.

Perhaps one great example of this would be to book a round-trip Emirates A380 First Class flights between Bangkok and Hong Kong, which routinely price out at around $1,225 (CAD).

We now have more insight into how RBC will convert existing balances of HSBC Rewards into various tiers of RBC Avion Rewards points.

Assuming the conversion estimates are accurate, you should get either the same or better value by waiting for the conversion, rather than redeeming your HSBC Rewards points prior to the conversion.

However, it’s worth reiterating that the exact conversion rate will be unique to each individual, and it won’t be announced until after the conversion has taken place.

Therefore, if you’d rather be 100% certain of the value you can get from your points, you can choose to redeem your points now, knowing that it could be possible to get better value once the conversion takes place.

RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card 55000 bonus points

It’s back! The best ever bonus of 55,000 points on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card

The best ever bonus of up to 55,000 Avion Rewards points on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite card has returned after a four month hiatus!  This is one of the easiest welcome bonuses to achieve in the market and is great for someone looking to get quick injection of a good amount of points that they can utilize sooner than later.

The 55,000 Avion Rewards Points Bonus

Here is how the 55,000 point welcome bonus is awarded:

  • 35,000 Welcome points on approval
  • 20,000 bonus point when you spend $5000 in the first 6 months
  • Must apply be November 27, 2023

As you can see the card retains the 35,000 points on approval that now seems to be the base offer for the card. What is best about the initial part of this welcome bonuses is that it is awarded on approval – no minimum spend. None of the spend this much each month over this many months as seen on other cards. You simply have to be approved for the card and the bonus is yours. It is awesome to see that RBC has kept this part but you can earn even more points with this offer.

The second part of the bonus does follow suit with most cards in the market and that is an additional bonus when you spend a certain amount within a certain amount of time. In the case of this offer it is 20,000 additional points when you spend $5,000 in the first 6 months for 55,000 points in total. I actually don’t mind this spend requirement at all – $5,000 over 6 months is less than $1,000 per month. That’s less than many of this card’s competitors which range from $6,000 to $24,000 in spending over a 3 to 15 month time period to get their respective bonus offers.

What can you get with the points?

Once you complete your $5,000 in spending to receive the entire 55,000 point welcome bonus you will actually be sitting on at least 60,000 points ($5,000 x 1 point per dollar in spending) if not more – it really comes down to how much you use your card for purchases.

So what can those 60,000 points get you? Let’s take a look:

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

  • Four economy class flights to a neighbouring province or state when redeeming via the RBC Avion Air Travel Redemption schedule. (Max. $350 per ticket / $1,400 total for four tickets) Taxes and fees are not included but you can redeem points towards them at 100 points to $1 rate or just pay for them with your credit card
  • One economy class flight anywhere in North America when redeeming via the RBC Avion Air Travel Redemption schedule. 35,000 points for Canada/Lower 48, 45,000 to 55,000 points for Hawaii, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America or Alaska. (Max. $700 to $1,100 per ticket) Taxes and fees are not included but you can redeem points towards them at 100 points to $1 rate or just pay for them with your credit card
  • $600 credit towards any other travel booked via RBC Rewards (100 points = $1)

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

  • $600 WestJet Dollars Convert the 60,000 points to WestJet Rewards at a 100 to 1 ratio. This means the offer provides 600 WestJet dollars. There are also times during the year where RBC  offers a bonus when you transfer to WestJet. That bonus tends to be 10% so these 60,000 points could be converted to 660 WestJet dollars or more if the bonus is highe r
  • Two Economy Class Tickets between Toronto to Dublin (Round trip): You can convert the 60,000 points to British Airways Executive Club at a 1:1 ratio. 60,000 Avios are more than enough to get you two economy class flights between Toronto and Dublin (as little as 26,000 Avios required) Recommended reading: RWRDS Availability Alert: Aer Lingus Business Class Toronto to Dublin

rbc avion travel redemption schedule

  •   One Economy Class Ticket between Vancouver and Hong Kong (Round Trip) You can convert the 60,000 points to Cathay Pacific Asia Miles  at a 1:1 ratio. 60,000 Asia Miles cover a round trip flight in economy class between Vancouver and Hong Kong (30,000 miles each way). NOTE: In October Cathay Pacific’s award charts are changing and while many business and first class redemptions will be going up, the economy class awards out of Canada are actually going down in price . As of October 1, 2023 it drops down to 27,000 Asia Miles each way or 54,000 round trip.

These are just a few of the economy class redemption examples that you could get. The points conversion partners like British Airways, Cathay Pacific and American Airlines also offer premium redemption options (Premium Economy, Business and First Class) where there is the potential to extract a lot of value out of your points.

RBC also offers transfer bonuses once or twice per year British Airways and those range from 30% to 50%. The transfer bonus to British Airways is the much heralded option for Avion cards and is in fact one of the main reasons the card continues to rank higher than many cards.

On top of the all the travel redemption options the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Card also has fairly extensive insurance coverage including out of province emergency medical coverage.  There are also partnerships with Petro-Canada whereby you can save at the pump plus earn extra Petro-Points and with Rexall where you can earn extra Be Well Points. Finally the card also has a partnership with DoorDash which sees all the Avion cards receive the following:

• Get $0 delivery fees for 12 months from DoorDash 17 – Add your eligible RBC credit card to your DoorDash account to: • Get a 12-month complimentary DashPass subscription 18 – a value of almost $120 • Enjoy unlimited deliveries with $0 delivery fees on orders of $12 or more when you pay with your eligible RBC credit card

Wrapping it up

This is a pretty amazing welcome bonus offer – sure we’ve seen higher on some other cards but it is great to see the best ever offer for this card return and is definitely worth a look. First off, you have a lower annual fee than a lot of the competitors at $120 vs. $139 to $150 or more and it has quite an easily achievable spend requirement to get the entire bonus. I know I come down hard on this card for how much you have to spend to utilize the RBC Avion award chart in the long run but with a bonus like this, it is a hard offer to pass by.
