My partner and I spent the day with A Grape View Tours and it was a truly magical experience. Our guide was just an all-around great person to spend time with and really knew the area inside and out. The van was clean and comfortable, the scenery was out of this world, and every destination was a treasure. One of our stops was Roo winery (named after a ROOster :D), which I understand had recently opened and was beautiful inside and out. We also stopped at a dairy farm for ice cream and a roadside farmers market. One of my favorite stops was a gentle hike to a waterfall - stunning!! This was not our first wine tour but I have to say it was one of the nicest. It just felt so personal, like we were visiting an old friend who was treating us to all the local flavors and colors. Highly recommended!

Katlin K., GA

We had an absolute blast celebrating my sister this weekend! Huge thank you to @a_grape_view_tours 🎉 thank you for helping make her bachelorette such an amazing and special time! I cannot recommend them enough! Patrick and Cliff are the absolute best! Please, if you are interested in booking a wine tour they are hands down the best around. They have so many options for different wineries and could not have been more accommodating
If you are seeking a fabulous wine tour, look no further - I wish we could give A Grape View ten stars! Cliff & Patrick were so wonderful. Our group of five really enjoyed seeing the best of Ellijay on this tour.

Curious about North Dakota-made wines, ciders, and meads? Grab a Red River Winery Trek passport and visit each of the locations to earn a prize!

Here’s how we would tackle the Red River Winery trek, keep in mind this may take a couple of days, and to always have a sober driver:

Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center

We recommend starting and ending at the  Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center , that way you can grab the passport and hit the road!

2001 44th St S, Fargo | (701) 282-3653

Cottonwood Cider House

45 Minutes North West of the Visitors Center.

Although not a traditional winery, the  Cottonwood Cider House  serves up some great North Dakota-grown ciders. This is a great stop to start your tour because their ciders are light and easy to drink.

> Must try

Their Ayr Mule is a wonderful take on the Moscow Mule.

14481 25th St SE, Ayr, ND | (701) 866-9913

Red Trail Vineyard

20 minutes South of Cottonwood.

Next up is this  charming red barn  within the vineyards which is a great spot for tasting some North Dakota wine!

Red Trail hosts Friday Night suppers throughout the summer, make a reservation for one and enjoy some local wines alongside NDSU Beef Tenderloins, steak dinners, and even Lobster Boils.

3510 142nd Ave SE, Buffalo, ND | (701) 238-3337

Rookery Rock Winery

Just 10 minutes from Red Trail.

This  penguin-themed winery  is on an enormous amount of land, hop into the tasting room to taste their varieties, if you’re lucky, the owner might take you on a walk through the crops and vines to show you where your beverages came from.

Frontenac Gris is a very North Dakota wine, Rookery Rock does a great job with this grape. Give it a try!

3660 147th Ave SE, Wheatland, ND | (701) 280-2470

Maple River Winery

12 minutes East from Rookery Rock Winery

One of the first wineries in the area,  Maple River Winery  is located in Downtown Casselton. They have mostly fruit-based wines along with many North Dakota-made products.

Their Strawberry Rhubarb wine is a sweet, fruit variety.

630 Front St, Casselton, ND | (701) 347-5900

Just over a 5-minute drive from Maple River Winery

Located just West of Fargo in Mapleton, ND,  4e winery  has a beautiful tasting room overlooking the vineyard. Enjoy a high-quality wine while you sit back and enjoy the views.

> Must try

The folks at 4e make a mean Sangria, try the red or white options made with their own wines. They even have a winter variety that’s warm and perfect for a chilly day.

3766 156th Ave SE, Mapleton, ND | (701) 936-9693

Prairie Rose Meadery

Just over 20 minutes East from 4e Winery will get you back into Fargo to Prairie Rose.

Prairie Rose  makes Mead which is honey wine, they make a whole bunch of flavors to choose from ranging from super sweet to really spicy or sour.

The Chokecherry mead is made from North Dakota’s state fruit. It has a cherry flavor that finishes semi-sweet.

3101 39th St S, Fargo | (701) 371-3690

Bear Creek Winery

Head South for a little over 10 minutes and it will bring you to Bear Creek!

Expansive vineyards and incredible views await at  Bear Creek Winery . This experimental winery has fantastic wines that range from sweet to very dry. They have mastered the art of using the cold climate, hardy grapes to create one heck of a bottle of wine.

Their Petite Pearl variety is a wonderfully dry red wine for even the biggest wine connoisseur.

8800 25th St S, Fargo | (701) 306-4709

Dakota Vines Winery

Go South for another 20 minutes to find Dakota Vines Vineyard.

This beautiful,  modern farmhouse  is perfect for tasting some of North Dakota’s best wines.

Their wine tasting flight is only $6 so you’re able to try six different wines. New in 2020, they have a rosé called Sundown which is perfect for a hot day.

17355 Co Rd 4, Colfax, ND | (701) 553-8807

You’ve completed the trek! Turn in your passport to the Travel Ambassadors at the Visitors Center for a free t-shirt to commemorate the trip. While you’re there, grab some information about the city or a Crafts and Drafts passport to do the same thing, just in the breweries.

Top-10 Red Wine Destinations to visit in 2024

Written By Francesca Lamantea

Top-10 red wine regions to visit in 2024

Who’s already planning their 2023 summer holidays like us? We’re sure that many of you are browsing the internet to get ideas for your next trip so we’re here to help, especially those of you who are looking for a holiday destination that can provide also incredible wine experiences.

The quest for the world's finest red wine can take one on a global journey, spanning multiple continents and regions. Renowned regions such as Bordeaux in France, Tuscany and Barolo in Italy, and Rioja in Spain produce some of the world's most revered red wines. Other notable regions include the Napa Valley in the USA, Barossa Valley in Australia, and Mendoza in Argentina. Each region boasts its own distinctive red wine styles, from the elegant and complex Pinot Noir of Burgundy to the robust and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon of Napa Valley, promising a captivating experience for every palate.

In this article, we are going to quickly explore the 10 best wine regions to visit if you love red wine. If you are a certified red wine lover, you probably already know about several of these regions, but we know you still have so many great wineries to try.

Don’t forget to also check out our blog about the 10 best wine regions to visit if you prefer white wine!

Let’s go!

French red wine regions

1. bordeaux.

Bordeaux is, together with Piedmont, one of the best-known red wine-producing regions in the whole world and one you really shouldn’t miss. Discover the incredible châteaux on both sides of the Gironde River and learn about how much the terroir affects the wines produced on the right or the left banks. Indeed, vineyards on both sides profit from slightly different climatic conditions, resulting in different wine styles.

Red wines from the left bank, where the appellations of Médoc and Graves are located, present bolder tannins and more peppery notes. Whereas wines from appellations like Saint Emilion and Pomerol, both located on the right bank, are fruitier and more elegant.

2. Beaujolais

The Beaujolais wine region is a gem that all red wine enthusiasts should discover between the Burgundy wine region and the Rhone Valley. The Nizerand River naturally divides the Beaujolais wine region into the Crus and Beaujolais Villages to the North of the river and Beaujolais Nouveau to the South.

Beaujolais winemakers mostly produce their delicious red wines using the Gamay grape variety, which gives red wines from this unique French wine region a fruity and vibrant character.

All the 10 Crus of Beaujolais are in the northern part of the wine region, and that’s where you might want to start your tour. All the appellations in the Beaujolais wine region are very interesting because they all produce red wines using one grape, Gamay, but the results can present slight differences depending on the soil and climatic conditions.

3. Rhône Valley

The Rhône Valley is a French wine region that you might want to check for your next wine tasting trip if you love red wine. The vineyards of the region are divided into two separate areas, the Northern vineyards, located on steep mountain ranges and hillsides, and the Southern vineyards, located at the foothills of mountains and hills.

In Northern Rhône, the only allowed grape is Syrah, which makes the red wines bold and spicy wines with rigid tannic construction.

The Southern Rhône wine region benefits from a modern Mediterranean climate. It has warmer summers and milder winters. The south region boasts an amazing variety of grapes. Red wines from this part of the Rhone wine region are fruitier and rounder.

Italian red wine regions

4. piedmont.

If you know that Barolo is the king of all wines, you know that Piedmont is the number 1 destination for any red wine lover. This north-western Italian region is known for producing an infinite number of elegant and delicious red wines; to name a few: Barolo , Barbaresco , Barbera d’Alba , Barbera d’Asti , Dolcetto, and so on and so forth.  We suggest starting your exploration of the Piedmont wine region from the province of Cuneo, more precisely from the 11 municipalities that are part of the Barolo DOCG appellation (one of them is called Barolo, you can’t go wrong there). Piedmont is also the perfect destination if you love any food with truffles, which of course perfectly pairs with the wines from the region, that you will mostly find in the city of Alba.

Dreamy landscapes, beautiful cities, and the number one destination in Italy for foodies and Instagrammer.

For all you who love red wine, the two appellations you can’t miss are Chianti (and the even more renowned Chianti Classico) and Brunello di Montalcino.

Let’s start with Chianti, one of Italy’s best-known wine-producing areas. Its diverse terroir gives winemakers the possibility to produce diverse types of Chianti red wine, that’s why you will never taste two identical Chiantis. Chianti wines are mostly produced using Sangiovese grapes, which gives Chianti its characteristic ruby colour and tartness.

6. Brunello di Montalcino

Situated just below the area of Chianti, Montalcino is another incredible wine-producing area of Tuscany. The most famous grape variety from the Montalcino wine region is Sangiovese Grosso, which is used to produce the exceptionally bold, tannic and fruity wines under the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG appellation.

One of the best holiday destinations in Italy, especially for beach holidays thanks to its crystal-clear waters, is also one of the best wine regions in the country where to taste red wines. Indeed, there are three main red wines produced in the stunning region of Puglia : Primitivo, Negramaro and Nero di Troia.

Fun fact: Primitivo is also known as Zinfandel, one of the main grapes grown in California. Primitivo is a wine high in alcohol, low in acidity and tannins and characterised by very clear aromas of strawberries and dark fruit.

If you’re looking for an even more curious wine, then try a glass of Negramaro in one of the many wineries scattered around the Salento area. Negramaro is entirely made using the Negramaro grape and it results in a strong and intense wine, that presents hints of liquorice.

Spanish red wine regions

Rioja is without any doubt the number one destination for any red wine enthusiast in Spain. There is nothing like a glass of red Rioja wine paired with delicious Spanish tapas. Red wines from the Rioja wine region are predominately made from the Tempranillo grape. This grape gives Rioja wines dark berry aromas, and spice on the palate, which is also obtained after a long period of ageing in barrels. The region’s vineyards follow the route of the Ebro River for roughly 100 km between the towns of Haro and Alfaro.

What’s interesting to know about the Rioja wine region is its classification system. All high-quality Rioja red wines are matured in new oak barrels. American oak has been the preference historically, but many wineries now use a mix of American and French oak.

9. Priorat

Priorat is a wine region located in the region of Catalonia , close to the Mediterranean city of Tarragona. This wine region is perfect for people who love red wines, want to engage in unique wine tasting and tours, and relax at the beach and take advantage of the warm Spanish weather.

Priorat wines are produced under the DOCa classification, awarded to wines produced in only two wine regions of Spain: Priorat and Rioja. The two main grapes cultivated in the Priorat wine region are Garnacha and Cariñena. Red wines produced with Garnacha are high in alcohol, low in tannins and present a full body. Notes of red fruit like raspberry, strawberry, red cherry, plus spices are clearly recognizable. Cariñena gives red wines a deep colour, higher tannin and high acidity. It brings notes of black fruits such as blackberry, black plum, and bramble to the blend, along with chocolate and spice.

10. napa valley.

Known worldwide for being one of the chicest and most exclusive wine regions in the world, Napa Valley is home to some incredible red wines. The number one grape in Napa Valley is Cabernet Sauvignon, which results in fruity-forward, floral, and elegant red wines. In a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Napa Valley wine region, you will find aromas of black fruits together with spicy notes and a subtle minerality.

Cabernet Sauvignon isn’t the only red wine you should taste while on your unforgettable holiday in Napa Valley, as the region’s Merlot is also worth a taste. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience some of the world’s best wine experiences in the gorgeous and sunny wine region of Napa Valley, where winemakers are involved in making tourists feel at home at their wineries as much as they are involved in delivering the best possible red wines.

Testimonials

In between winery stops, we very much enjoyed the information on winemaking as well as the history and local lore provided by our enthusiastic guide. The vehicle was quite clean and comfortable. We were very impressed with the quality of the wines in this region. A lovely day with a total of four people on the tour–we highly recommend it. 938patriciaw
Our driver, Jorge, made this wine tour an amazing one. We loved each location and was able to have the party we wanted on the bus. Will highly recommend this tour to anyone! Stephanie C
We toured four different wineries with our wonderful tour guide Jorge! He was wonderful!!! We went for my birthday as a couple and 5 other women were in our group also celebrating birthdays! Jorge does an amazing job and totally worth it! Mary C
We (myself & my 2 sisters) joined a group of 2 ladies, and some youngsters from Australia…we made new friends and had a blast together. Jorge was our driver/organizer. We toured 4 wineries and had an absolutely amazing time! With so many other folks on tours and self touring, Jorge was fantastic at getting us in and making us comfortable at each stop as it was a cold and windy day. There was a certain amount of juggling to accommodate us and Jorge handled everything as a professional, he was also very knowledgeable and courteous. Not to mention the fact that he knew just how to add to our merriment! I highly recommend this company for a lovely and diverting day tasting wine in the beautiful Verde Valley!! The wines here are wonderful too! Judy K
It was our first time at a vineyard and the driver (sadly I cannot remember his name) was so awesome and knew so much about wine! He made this trip so much fun and I’m definitely coming back! It was for a bachelorette trip and words can’t explain how perfect everything was! Lizbeth H
Our group loved the wine tour. Jorge by far is the best!!! Very knowledgeable, and very funny. Kept our group entertained the entire trip. Larry S

Explore the Delights of Wine Tours in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York

The Finger Lakes region is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, serene lakes, and, most notably, its world-class wineries. With over 100 wineries dotting the region, a custom wine tour in the Finger Lakes promises an unforgettable experience for both wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts.

From vineyard-hopping to tasting award-winning wines, here’s a glimpse into the allure of wine tours in the Finger Lakes region, and its rich history, breathtaking scenery, and diverse wine offerings.  This is a must-visit for wine lovers.

  • The Region’s Wine Heritage: The Finger Lakes region boasts a winemaking tradition that dates back to the early 19th century when European immigrants recognized the region’s unique microclimate and soil composition. Today, the region is primarily known for its production of cool-climate wines, with Riesling being the flagship varietal. However, the area also cultivates other grape varieties, including Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir, resulting in a diverse selection of wines to suit all palates.
  • Exploring the Wine Trails: The Finger Lakes region is home to several wine trails, each offering a delightful journey through picturesque vineyards and charming wineries. The most prominent wine trails include the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, Keuka Lake Wine Trail, and Canandaigua Lake Wine Trail. These trails showcase the region’s best wineries and provide an opportunity to taste a wide range of wines while enjoying the stunning views of the lakes and rolling hills.
  • Winery Visits and Tastings: A wine tour in the Finger Lakes is a gateway to exceptional wineries that combine natural beauty with a commitment to producing high-quality wines. Many wineries offer guided tours that provide insights into the winemaking process, from vine to bottle. Visitors can explore vineyards, learn about grape cultivation, and witness the cellar operations. Tastings are typically available at each winery, allowing guests to savor a variety of wines, discover their favorite flavors, and engage with knowledgeable staff who are passionate about their craft.
  • Food and Wine Pairings: In addition to the exceptional wines, the Finger Lakes region also excels in culinary experiences. Several wineries feature on-site restaurants or partner with local eateries to offer delectable food and wine pairings. From farm-to-table cuisine to gourmet cheese platters, visitors can indulge in a range of culinary delights that perfectly complement the region’s wines. The combination of exquisite food, stunning views, and exquisite wines creates a sensory experience like no other.
  • Wine Festivals and Events: The Finger Lakes region hosts various wine festivals and events throughout the year, attracting wine enthusiasts from near and far. The Finger Lakes Wine Festival, held annually in Watkins Glen, brings together over 80 wineries for a weekend of tastings, live music, and culinary delights. Other events include the Finger Lakes Riesling Festival, the Harvest Wine Festival, and the Ice Wine Festival. These events provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate the region’s wines, meet winemakers, and immerse oneself in the vibrant wine culture.

Embarking on a wine tour in the Finger Lakes is an enchanting journey through stunning landscapes, rich history, and exceptional wines. Whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or just beginning to explore the world of wine, the Finger Lakes region offers an unparalleled experience.

From the vineyard-dotted hillsides to the award-winning wineries and the warm hospitality of the winemakers, this region is a true haven for wine lovers.

So with the aid of our website and decades of experience touring the Finger Lakes, go ahead and plan your visit , raise a glass, and savor the distinct flavors and breathtaking beauty that make the Finger Lakes wine tours an unforgettable adventure.
