Tour Background [ ]

Due to the fact that A&M Records had chosen not to invest in promoting a concert tour for Janet's 1986 album, "Control", the the Rhythm Nation World Tour 1990 became Janet's first in support of a studio album.

A&M announced plans for Janet's global tour in the fall of 1989; she was assisted by a team of eleven musicians, back-up singers, and six dancers.

Anthony Thomas was selected as chief choreographer for the tour.

Thomas stated: "Janet was looking for dancers with a hybrid of street and technical training ... I'd say the cast is half and half between those two, which is what makes it so interesting. I'm not a trained dancer—and Janet is not, either. She just looks like it because she's a natural. She picks up dance steps very quickly."

According to Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle: "Thomas and Jackson also collaborated on the dance sequences for Janet's half-hour video—a telemusical her publicists call it—that accompanied the release of her 'Rhythm Nation' album in October."

Musician and record producer Chuckii Booker was hired as Janet's musical director; his band became the tour's opening act. Booker explained that he was approached by Janet after a recommendation from her producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

In an interview, he stated: "I had known Janet for four to five years, but it was pretty much on a hi-and-goodbye basis until last September when she invited me to a 'Rhythm Nation' party in Los Angeles. I attended and told her I was very excited for her. She said, 'Yes, and I'd like you to be musical director.' I turned around, thinking she was talking to somebody else. I couldn't believe it. But then I found out she had talked to Jimmy and Terry and they had recommended me."

Reporter Doug Adrianson wrote: "Because of the inevitable comparisons with brother Michael, 32, expectations for the Rhythm Nation Tour are higher than a moonwalk. To make sure the show is suitably spectacular, Jackson and musical director Chuckii Booker rehearsed with a sizable crew for two weeks at the Pensacola Civic Centre ... the same place Michael fine-tuned his Bad tour."

Janet's tour was managed by Roger Davies, stage designer Mark Fisher and Benny Collins. The total production cost was an estimated $2 million.

Promotion [ ]

On June 9, 1990, MTV aired a four-hour special entitled "Janet Jackson Saturday" featuring interviews and music videos by Janet, as well as live coverage of her tour.

The full "Rhythm Nation 1814 World Tour" concert from the tour's second date at the Tokyo Dome in Japan was filmed and aired on Japanese television.

Commerical Reception [ ]

The majority of all of the tour's concert dates became instant sell-outs.==

The tour's dress rehearsal at the Pensacola Civic Center issued 7,600 tickets to the public as a benefit to local charity, which had sold-out in less than an hour.

The first international concert (which took place in Tokyo, Japan) sold out the Tokyo Dome within seven minutes, a record for the fastest sellout in the history of the Dome.

Lori Buttars of The Salt Lake Tribune reported: "In May, Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation Tour became the fastest sell-out in Salt Palace history. Tickets for the June 18 concert were gone in a record 1 hour and 20 minutes after the box office opened."

In June of 1990, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Janet's tour had become one of the most commercially successful box office attractions for a recording artist.

In addition, "of those women soloists who regularly reach the top of the record charts, only Madonna is doing similar arena business."

Grossing $28.1 million in the United States alone, the tour ranked number five among the best-selling of 1990 within the US, making Janet Jackson the only female artist to place within the top ten.

The Rhythm Nation World Tour, with an attendance of over 2 million patrons, remains the most successful debut tour by any recording artist.

Critical Reception [ ]

Music writer Troy Moon, who viewed the tour's dress rehearsal, called the show "spontaneous, very loose and limber. It came off as nightclub funk, more Prince than (Michael)."

He also noted the emphasis on the show's dance routines, stating "[t]he singing almost comes as an afterthought. The debut concert in Miami, Florida on March 1, 1990 sold out prior to the performance.

Music Critic Deborah Wilker remarked that "[Janet] does not present a serious threat to brother Michael, though she has proven beyond any doubt she is a formidable force in her own right."

She reported the concert showcased the fact that "Jackson is an accomplished dancer whose choreography has set trends worldwide. The music, though extremely engaging, is secondary."

Wilker also reported on the media attention surrounding the opening concert, stating, "[t]he kick-off of this tour was a media event, with reporters and film crews from across the country on hand. In the audience was Janet's brother Jackie and mother Katherine, as well as singer Whitney Houston and producers Jam and Lewis."

While reviewing her concert at Madison Square Garden, Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared Janet's showmanship to that of her brother Michael, and Prince.

However, he states that she could not sing and dance simultaneously as well as either and suspected some of her performance was lip-synced.

In her defense, he adds: "Yet in a video-era pop event like Miss Jackson's concert, old-fashioned musicianship matters less than the overall package—and Miss Jackson turns out to be an endearing performer despite all the calculation. Her songs are not just catchy, but full of worthwhile messages about independence and tolerance as well."

Commenting on Janet's performance at the Capital Centre in Washington, Richard Harrington of The Washington Post noted that the growing trend of video screen use in concert had both advantages and drawbacks, such as [l]iving up to the very expectations engendered by those incessantly played video images."

In reference to Janet's showmanship, he stated that "[s]he doesn't quite command the stage yet, but she has little problem commanding attention, thanks to her spectacular dancing and the wonderfully aggressive choreography that informs the 90-minute show."

In his opinion, the most "engaging" aspects of the concert were Jackson's ballads such as "Let's Wait Awhile" and "Come Back to Me."

Harrington adds that "[a]lthough the focus was clearly on Jackson's dynamic dancing and her apparently boundless energy, she acquitted herself well on the vocal front. The singing seemed mostly note-perfect recaps of the records, and there is less range and dynamics here than in her dancing, but overall, it was effective enough."

Los Angeles Times critic Chris Willman, who reviewed her opening southern California concert at The Forum expressed:

"If the dancing in Janet's tour is even more enthralling than that of brother Michael (who can still best her in pure technical proficiency), it's because she spends so much of her stage time working with six other dancers as part of a hip-hop chorus line. It represents the pinnacle of what can be done in the popping 'n' locking style-a rapid-fire mixture of rigidly jerky and gracefully fluid movements."

He complimented Janet's endurance for her 80-minute-plus show and downplayed criticism of lip-syncing by saying "[e]ven a classically trained vocalist would be hard-pressed to maintain any sort of level of volume—or, more appropriately, 'Control'—while bounding up and down stairs and whipping limbs in unnatural directions at impeccable, breakneck speed."

The first international concert took place in Tokyo, Japan at the Tokyo Dome on May 17, 1990. Los Angeles Times reported that "Japan became a 'Rhythm Nation' as Janet Jackson opened her tour at the Tokyo Dome, cascading thunderous waves of funk and choreography over 50,000 people ... The choreography, a cross between break-dancing and military maneuvers, sent some spectators dancing into the aisles."

Janet also performed in Osaka and Yokohama before returning to the North America and then traveled to Europe for the final leg of her tour.

Helen Metella of the Edmonton Journal praised Janet's elaborate stage show, calling her socially conscious message of unity a "noble quest."

In reference of the comparisons between her and brother Michael, Metella comments that "the 23-year-old Jackson throws herself into an orgy of non-stop dancing and extravagant theatrics that clearly express her talent and her personal philosophies. She may not have surpassed Michael yet, but she's closing in on him fast—using many of his own tricks, yet."

In reviewing her performance at Northlands Coliseum in Edmonton, Canada, Metella reports that the use of lighting and sound effects made for an excellent routine in addition to the well received vocalization of songs like "Control", "Nasty" and "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "[b]ut it was the dancing that was most electrifying ...witnessing the astonishing pace and physical commitment of Jackson during the dance numbers could and did galvanize us into action of our own, which is exactly what the show was about.

With Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 —or, simply, Rhythm Nation , if ya nasty—the youngest Jackson sibling wasn't merely content to reunite with newfound collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis , the two men who'd help shape the sound of Control , her third album and the first to have both excluded father Joe Jackson from the process entirely and , perhaps not coincidentally, hit No. 1 on the Billboard. She'd already broken away from her family, found her new sound, and gotten her big fat hit record in the process. Now she wanted more.

And over the course of 12 songs and eight interludes, introducing the sort of album composition that would go on to become something of a trademark in her career, Janet not only delivered a mix of songs both socially conscious and eminently danceable, but she invented her own damn musical utopia.

"We are a nation with no geographic boundaries, bound together through our beliefs," she explains in the album's spoken intro. "We are like-minded individuals, sharing a common vision, pushing toward a world rid of color lines."

While Rhythm Nation may not have changed the world as she'd hoped—if you hadn't noticed, it's still pretty grim out there—the album did change the course of her career. Its staggering performance during the cycle of its life on the charts kickstarted what would be three decades of the icon breaking records and making history. And, while she didn't rid the world of all the ills she sings about, she did prove that you can make thoughtful pop music that also fills the dance floor without effort. And that's not nothing.

In honor of 30 years of this groundbreaking, game-changing album, join us on an escapade as we look back on all the ways Janet's gone on to make history since its release.

With the release of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 , her fourth studio album, on September 19, 1989, Janet delivered the only album in history to ever produce No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in three separate calendar years, beginning with "Miss You Much" that year. In 1990, both "Escapade" and "Black Cat" topped the chart, followed by "Love Will Never Do (Without You)" in 1991.

Despite being released in 1989, Rhythm Nation would go on to become the best-selling album of 1990. Since it's release, it has been estimate to have sold over 12 million copies worldwide.

To this day, Rhythm Nation also remains the only album to have seven commercial singles peak within the top five of the Hot 100. The only one.

When Janet embarked on the Rhythm Nation World Tour 1990 , her first headlining tour, it became the most successful debut tour by any recording artist, a title it still holds. Grossing $28.1 million in the U.S. alone, it ranked No. 5 of the best-selling tours that year, making her the only female to place in the top 10.

Having fulfilled her initial recording contract with A&M Records in 1991, she signed a multi-million dollar deal with Virgin Records, estimated to be between $32 and $50 million dollars, making her the highest paid recording artist at the time.

When Janet , her fifth studio album, was released in May 1993, it opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, making her the first female artist in the Nielsen SoundScan era to do so.

Teaming with her brother Michael Jackson for "Scream," the lead single from his 1995 album HIStory, the siblings delivered the first song to ever debut within the top five on the Hot 100. (It debuted at No. 5.) The music video, directed by Mark Romanek , cost $7 million to make and was listed in the Guinness World Records as the most expensive music video ever made.

With the release of "Runaway," a new track recorded for her first greatest hits album, Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 , the same year as "Scream," she became the first female artist in Billboard 's history to debut in the top 10 of the Hot 100, entering at No. 6.

In 1996, Janet renewed her contract with Virgin Records for a reported $80 million, making her the then-highest-paid recording artist in history, surpassing her brother Michael and Madonna 's then-unparalleled $60 million contracts.

When "I Get Lonely," the third single off her sixth studio album The Velvet Rope , debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100 in February 1998, it became her 18th consecutive top-10 hit on the chart, setting a record as the only female artist to have done such a thing. To this day, she is surpassed only by Elvis Presley and The Beatles .

While her wardrobe malfunction during the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show in 2004 nearly derailed her career completely (and rather unfairly, we might add), the incident in question became the most recorded and replayed moment in TiVo history and went on to inspire the creation of YouTube.

Despite the Super Bowl debacle, she wasn't done making history just yet. With the release of "Make Me," the lead single from her second greatest hits compilation Number Ones , in September 2009, she became the first artist to have No. 1 singles in four separate decades. (It became her 19th No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart in 2010.)

With a performance under the iconic I.M Pei glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 2011, part of the museum's biannual fundraiser, Liasons au Louvre, she became the first female pop star to ever do so. "Janet Jackson is one of the world's greatest artistic treasures," Louvre President-Director Henri Loyrette said in a statement at the time. "Accordingly, we are profoundly honored, and believe it most fitting, that her performance in the Louvre Museum will be yet another masterpiece captured under our glorious glass pyramid."

Janet Jackson Reveals She Almost Played Halle Berry's X-Men Role but Had to Tour Instead

Janet Jackson said she was offered the part of Storm in the ‘X-Men’ franchise

20th Century Fox;Getty

Janet Jackson almost took Hollywood by storm.

The Grammy-winning singer revealed she was once offered the role of superhero Storm in the big-screen adaptations of Marvel’s X-Men comics, as a preview clip from the Friday, April 26, episode of The Drew Barrymore Show indicates.

“I can’t remember the film but —  Halle Berry played Storm,” Jackson, 57, told hosts Drew Barrymore and Ross Matthews in response to being asked if she was almost cast in 1999’s The Matrix .

“But I couldn’t” accept the part, she added, “because I was just embarking on the Janet tour.”

Barrymore, 49, and Matthews, 44, were asking Jackson about a picture of her circa 1999 in which she wore an all-black ensemble including a leather trench coat. But it was 2000’s X-Men rather than The Matrix that she almost joined instead.

Berry, 57, played the iconic superhero in the comics-to-movie adaptations X-Men , 2003’s X2 , 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past .

The franchise also starred Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Famke Janssen as Jean Grey, James Marsden as Cyclops, Anna Paquin as Rogue, and more.

“ X-Men !” exclaimed Barrymore, who then revealed another missed casting connection, that she herself was in contention for a role in 1997’s Mark Wahlberg and Julianne Moore movie Boogie Nights . “I think it’s when I went and did Ever After . I went in a very different direction.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

In a 2021 interview with Vanity Fair , Berry revealed that she would “absolutely” revisit playing her X-Men character.

“I loved playing Storm, and people love Storm,” she said at the time. “If we could find a version that would make sense, or a storyline that would make sense, I would absolutely do that, for sure.”

While Jackson is known primarily for her music, the “Rhythm Nation” singer has starred as an actress in Poetic Justice, The Nutty Professor: The Klumps , and the Why Did I Get Married films, as well as the sitcom Good Times .

“I love you in movies,” Matthews told Jackson in the preview clip. “Would you ever do another one?”

Jackson smiled and responded, “Sure, I would. For sure.”

Her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show follows her stopping by The Tonight Show on April 12 to crash host Jimmy Fallon ’s opening monologue. Jackson confirmed on the show that she’s in rehearsals for the upcoming dates of her global Together Again Tour .

Rock trailblazer Heart reunites for a world tour and a new song

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”
