Great way to do Paris on your own - some museums not accurate

We just used these audioguides on a 3 day visit to Paris in January. They were a great addition to our trip that allowed us to see the important sights without having to pay for audioguides. We had a couple issues with the first part of the Louvre tour because the Greek Statues area was not in the same layout as the audioguide. Once we figured it out we were ok and the rest of the tour was very helpful. However the tour only covers one wing of the Louvre and there was much more to see. We also pretty much could not use the Orsay museum audioguide because much of the museum was under a large renovation and nothing was in the same places as the audioguide. After a lot of frustration trying to find things, we evenutally abandoned the guide and just perused the museum on our own. Otherwise the Versailles tour and the parts of the Historic Paris walk that we used were great and we plan on using the Italy guides on our trip this summer!
Love this. I listen from home when I wish I was in Paris :) I’ve learned a lot of interesting facts, and other things that I will remember for the next time I am in Paris.

Rick Steves Gave Me a Personal Tour of Paris — Here’s How You Can Get One, Too

This informative guided tour of Paris might just be Rick Steves Europe's best-kept secret.

Kelsey Fowler

As someone who doesn’t mind spending time alone on vacations, I find some of my favorite travel memories include walking around a city or exploring a museum on my own. On a recent trip to Paris, I wanted to experience the history and atmosphere more than the last time I had set foot in the City of Light, when I was focused on checking off the “must see” tourist attractions.

So, driven by the mindset of traversing the city more as a traveler and not a tourist this time around, I decided that, rather than hiring an expensive personal guide, or hopping along on a packed group walking tour, I would turn to one of the most trusted guides in European travel: Rick Steves . Steves is a renowned travel writer, synonymous with European travel and his philosophy of embracing local culture while abroad. The Rick Steves guidebooks are hugely popular — in fact, I picked up the pocket version of the Rick Steves Paris book specifically for this trip.

While I couldn’t book Steves to guide me personally through Paris, I did have the next-best-thing : his audio tour. As I set out to explore the Left Bank, I had the convenience — and added company — of hearing Steves directly in my ear as I started my walk. Great audio guides allow the listener to explore cities at their own pace without needing to map out an itinerary in advance. Simply download the audio tour, head to the first landmark, and hit play.

Steves spent a lot of his 2022 travels talking to himself, carefully noting updates and changes for his 60 self-guided audio tours. In April 2023, Rick Steves Europe republished updated versions of these tours , with guides in Athens, London, Salzburg, Paris, and more. The walking tours are excerpted from Rick Steves guidebooks, and the free Rick Steves Audio Europe app includes bonus features like a companion map, tips, and the full script of each tour.

I opted for the Historic Paris Walk audio tour , as it covered a lot of the neighborhood near my hotel . The tour is advertised as a three-mile journey, and Steves recommends two hours for walking, and another two hours if you choose to go inside the sights.

Zachary Scott/New York Times Magazine/Courtesy of Rick Steves' Europe

Starting out at Notre-Dame de Paris, I was instantly immersed in the story of Paris that Steves tells, building on the history of the city and religion that led to the construction of the cathedral. Even though the Gothic landmark is still undergoing repairs from the 2019 fire, I was able to listen to a good portion of the tour anyway, as Steves hits on a lot of the history and architecture on the outside.

One of the great things about the audio tour is each chapter of the narration has a separate title and picture, making it easy to navigate forward or backward in the audio to find the right location. Walking through the center of the city, I enjoyed having Steves as a companion, bringing me from spot to spot with enough insight to keep even my jet-lagged self interested. His style of narration is friendly and informative.

The tour also includes verbalized step-by-step directions, so, if you have a good sense of direction, you can easily follow the turns and head to the next landmark or street without missing a beat. (I did have to pause once or twice to look around and make sure I was headed in the right direction.) But it’s easiest to follow the tour in the order Steves has laid out, as I completed almost a full loop around Île de la Cité, from Notre-Dame, to Pont Neuf, the Left Bank, the Latin Quarter, and Place Saint-Michel.

Of course, when I got to the famous bookstore Shakespeare and Company , I had to pause the guide to go inside. And that wasn't the only time I deviated from the tour: when I reached Sainte-Chapelle, I decided to skip that section as well. Because of Notre-Dame’s closing, this nearby church is even more popular now, and the line was too long for me to wait that day. In the updated tour found in the Rick Steves Audio Europe app, Steves does point out this is the one place to get an advance ticket for.

But as I walked through Paris, it truly felt like I had a personal guide with me. I didn’t feel like a tourist at all — I never had to pull out a map or a guidebook, and it made me appreciate walking through the city while learning its history.

The next day, I went to the Musée d’Orsay , one of Paris’s most popular museums, perhaps best-known for its extensive Impressionist collection with works by Van Gogh and Monet, among many others. Here, I pulled out my pocket-sized Rick Steves Paris guidebook (and quietly read it aloud to a friend as we walked the vibrant maze of Manets and Picassos). Steves also has an audio tour of the museum, and others, like the Louvre, if you’re more inclined to listen rather than read.

If you — like me — are not an art student, but still want to appreciate these masterful works, Steves’s guides are helpful in pointing out which works are important to stop at, and what to look for once you’re there. I loved hearing more about the art world throughout history in Paris, and Steves is able to compare and contrast differing styles and movement, and build on that knowledge as you progress in time throughout the museum.

The Steves guides allowed me to explore landmarks and places I wouldn’t have otherwise known about, and get a great understanding of the city without any language barrier. Plus, self-guided tours offer flexibility and independence, while still offering a rewarding and informative experience.

The Rick Steves audio guides are all completely free. Interested travelers can install the Rick Steves Audio Europe app to download the latest versions of the tours.

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to give my thoughts on the Rick Stevens walking tours podcasts.

audio app for my iPhone.

We downloaded ones for Paris , Florence , and Rome .

Rome we downloaded 4 podcasts.. the Trastevere . The Pantheon, Colosseum , and the forum.

For Florence we did The Renaissance walking tour, and for Paris we did the Orsay Museum and historic

Paris walking tour. We also printed and downloaded the maps for all walking tours

For Rome the Pantheon, Colosseum and forum where great. They were informative and helped with the

history at everything. The Trastevere one was harder to follow since it was hard to

know what streets to turn and walk down.

The Florence walking tour was good. It was hard to listen to him when navigating through the busy streets but we did it.

Paris historic walking tour was great. Nice walk with great information. It was easier to follow since it involved

landmarks to navigate where to walk. The Orsay Museum tour/podcast was harder to

follow since the museums was under construction and they changed paintings and art

around. This is when my iphone app was better then the podcast download because it showed a picture of the painting when he discussed the painter/or painting.

Podcasts vs the iphone app with downloaded podcasts.

The app is much easier to use since there is pictures of what is being narrated.

This was very helpful when we where not sure what he was talking about and if we were in the right place.

You can also skip tracks like a CD unlike the regular podcast you can just fastfwd.

Overall I would recommend the iphone app. The information is great and it is FREE!

free is always a good price!

I too like his new app.

You can download all the podcasts for free to the app, and you get the pictures :-)

Depending on your device, the Metr0 app is wonderful for getting around the Metro. It also works offline (you download the data in advance with the app) so you don't have to use data to use it. Unfortunately, it isn't available for Android, though.

rick steves audio tours france

One of my favorite apps for Paris is Patrimap. It pinpoints your location and gives information about nearby sights. It comes in handy whenever someone asks me, "What is that?" and it's free.

My newest must have app is called Jibbigo English - French.

It's a translator that you speak into saying something in English and it says it back to you in French. No internet connection needed.

It's amazing. On sale for 5 bucks now (normally costs 30). I tried out the most ridiculous long sentence the other day and it got it right! Very easy to use.

I also highly recommend the Paris2Go app. Only 99 cents and it's got a zoomable map of the city, metro map, directions, etc. Does not need internet connection. Links to thousands of articles on all the sights... just tap the place on the map and you can get an article all about that bridge, fountain, street, museum, whatever.

The Louvre has one of the best apps too. Guides to tons of artwork. Videos to watch (in different languages including english) on the artwork. All kinds of information including where to find the artwork in the museum and the museum hours and such. They recently did an update so the app covers more than just the biggies at the museum. Some lesser known pieces as well.

New content now available on Rick Steves Audio Europe app

1

I have a lot of fun and rewarding projects on my desk – and one that I am particularly passionate about is our free app, “ Rick Steves Audio Europe™ .”

Why am I so in love with this thing? Because it’s p acked with practical information (both self-guided audio tours of Europe’s greatest cities, galleries, and museums, and the very best of our radio interviews organized in country-specific playlists) that will make people’s trips more meaningful. It’s free. And tens of thousands of travelers are using it. Any time I drop into the Pantheon in Rome, St. Mark’s in Venice, or Versailles outside of Paris, I see travelers using our app. They’re having a great time immersed in the cultural wonder of the sight…and I am literally in their ear (my voice is anyway).

Each year we add to the material already available with Rick Steves Audio Europe, and last week we spliced in 26 new radio interviews.

Learn how to download the app (it’s free and easy) at  www.ricksteves.com/audioeurope . It is such a treat for me to be able to interview such beautiful minds and inspirational travelers and an even bigger treat to be able to share these conversations (so beautifully edited by my radio production team) with you.

New radio interviews spliced into all the existing ones on the Rick Steves Audio Europe app include:

Britain (Beyond London): Isles of Britain, Scottish Hebrides, Scottish Secession: Before the Vote Eastern Europe: Adriatic Coast, Albania, Prague’s Coronation Way France (Beyond Paris): Discovery of France, French Riviera Highlights France (Paris): French Impressionism, How Paris Became Paris, Paris Day Trips General Europe: Class of 1500, European Education, European Media, Challenges for European Women Germany/Austria: Swiss Mix, Walking Vienna Greece/East Mediterranean: Greek Islands Ireland: Faeries of Ireland Italy: Italian Rails II, Italy – North vs. South II Netherlands/Belgium: Amsterdam by Bike, Amsterdam Update Portugal: Portugal’s Algarve Spain: Live Like a Spaniard Turkey: Cruising the Bosphorus

Around the World with Kids

Follow my family as we travel and learn with our children, why the rick steves audio europe app should be on your phone for your next european trip.

When you are coordinating a trip for seven people, you need to figure out how you are going to get everyone through the big sites, preferably as economically as possible. That is where Rick Steves came to the rescue. I had everyone in our group download the Rick Steve’s Audio Europe App . Using this app we had Rick Steve’s guide us through the Historic Paris, walk the Denon branch of the Louvre , understand impressionism in the Musee d’Orsay , and get the Pastel de Natas from the oldest bakery in Lisbon . And did I mention that all these audio tours were free?!?!  Check out why I now actively recommend everyone who is going to Europe download this free app.

How I Discovered the Rick Steve’s Audio Europe App

Back in 2008, My husband and I were traveling to Europe together for the first time. We had few days in Paris , and at this point I was super into budget travel and reading guidebooks (this is pre discovering Travel Blogs). Of course, that line of research led me to Rick Steves and his website. To my surprise, I found on his website that you can download FREE Mp3s that are audio walking tours. Since this is pre-everyone having a cell phone in their pocket, we downloaded these MP3s onto our iPods, and then using them to explore a few key locations in Paris . (I remember being mad when we were in Paris and I discovered one of the MP3s I downloaded was corrupted so we couldn’t listen to that tour.)  We found it so convenient and easy. When it came time to go back to Europe with our kids 13 years later, I immediately went to the Rick Steves website looking to see if they still had the free audio tours. Then I made an awesome discovery, not only were they still available, but there were also more and, in the time, they had developed an app making it easy for everyone.

A young couple in front of Cupid and Psyche in the Louvre

How to Use the App

On any Android or Apple device you can download the “ Rick Steves Audio Europe Travel App ”. Once downloaded, go into “Find Tours & Interviews” for all the good content. The audio files are sorted by country, with the most popular cities ( Paris , Rome , etc.) having their own section. Once in section of the Country/City of choice, you can browse the audio files. Titles with the walking man are walking tours. Those with the microphone are past podcast episodes. Click on the title you are interested in and hit download. You can download as many or as few as you wish. But anything you download will be added to your Playlist.

Screenshots of the Rick Steves Audio Europe Travel App

The Playlist feature lets you quickly get to the files you are most interested in when you are on the go. Once the file is downloaded, you do not need internet to access the audio tour, which is great if you want to save data charges. When you are doing an audio tour, there are three tabs. The first is the list of chapters, where you can listen to the tour. You can start at chapter 1 and follow the whole tour, or you can jump ahead to the chapters that interest you. The second tab is a map. Usually, the numbers of the chapters correspond to the numbers on the map. The last tab is the text! Didn’t hear something but don’t want to rewind and find out exactly what he said? Or want to look for something specific he said but don’t want to listen to the whole thing again? Then skim through the text to find it. I found myself referencing them again over and over.

Screenshots of the Rick Steves Audio Europe Travel App

With the apps downloaded on everyone’s phones, we made sure everyone had headphones with them, and then we were able to get “guided” tours through some of the biggest sites without paying for a guide. (For my son he used his Bluetooth headphones , my husband used his Bose Noise Canceling Headphones , and I used my Sports JBuds . My daughter had wired headphones but choose to use the earbuds she got off the plane) .

Why I Love the App

  • Rick Steves does a great job of explaining everything and sprinkling in jokes. He never drones on and keeps it moving. His explanation was always engaging. It worked for all the ages in our group.
  • The app is super easy and intuitive to use. Obviously, the Gen Z’s of the group caught on quickly. But even the technology challenged Boomers were able to figure it out and could listen and move along with it.
  • He covers all the major sites that you might want to see in Europe . Using the app, we were able to get a guided tour of the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay . We did walking tours of Historic Paris, Lisbon and The Heart of Rome.

Woman looking at Roman Ruins with earbuds in her ears

  • Did I mention it’s FREE!!!  Do you know how much guided tours for a group of 6 cost? This let us learn so much in all where we went without having to spend so much money.

What Tours We Used

We actually used the following tours:

  • Historic Paris
  • The Orsay Museum
  • Versailles Palace
  • Lisbon City Walk
  • Rome – Heart of Rome
  • Rome – Jewish Ghetto
  • Rome – Pantheon

Things to Look Out For

As with every app there are a few things to look out for and this one is no exception.

  • You have to download the files, there is no streaming option. You can’t listen until the file is fully downloaded. It would be better if the file was downloaded before you get to the location.
  • My kids were disappointed to find out that just because the audio file is 1.5 hours, we are not there for 1.5 hours. My son wanted to listen, and then move with the instructions as if he were one with them and not pause it at all. However, many in the group wanted to take some time, see things to the side, etc. Sometimes you don’t walk as fast as Rick Steves (either I’m really slow or he’s a speed walker) so you’ll need to do a lot of pausing. Set expectations with the group accordingly.
  • This is a free audio tour, so it does not go as deep as you may like. For the Louvre , it only covered one wing and the highlights. For my crew of tweens who were there because they had to be, it was perfect. For my art loving stepfather, it was not deep enough. If you feel you want a real in-depth look at a specific place, you may want to either purchase an audio guide from the location or go on a tour with a guide.

Two young children listening to audio tours in the Louvre

I am a history geek and in my top Gallup Strengths , I consistently have Learner. So it’s no surprise that I would love a free app that gives me history and context right at the moment. I love that it can be done on your time, and you aren’t tied to a timed guided tour. And it lets you go at your own pace, lets you and your family see things when you want, stop for breaks, and then keep going. Or continue the next day! When we were in Rome , we did a mix of both the audio walking tours, and getting a tour guide for some of the places we wanted more in-depth knowledge, and it was perfect. For most people school age and up, this is the perfect level of engaging information to help you learn about what you are visiting, but when you want to. If you are going with your kids or teens, I definitely recommend downloading this app and having it available for all!

If you want guided tours, which I recommend for locations where you want more in-depth information, checkout the options available on GetYourGuide

Tours, France

I'm thinking of renting an airbnb for a month in Tours, and attending CLE french school as a beginner. I've been to that region and like the proximity to Paris, however... Is it a nice little city?

Yes, I thought ti was a nice little city. Has a nice old town center, lots of restaurants, etc. And the fact that it's a transportation hub for the area makes it extremely convenient for getting to other places. I;d probably choose to stay there for a month if there was a specific reason to be in that area.

Thanks for your feedback, I appreciate it!

I am one of Rick's France-based tour guides and I live in Tours. Let me know if you have any questions about the city. I will be happy to help. Clé is an excellent school to study the French language. Tours makes a good home-base to explore the Loire Valley without a car. Most trains connect here anyway when coming from other towns. There are plenty of short-term apartment rentals to pick from. It's a safe town overall, much more peaceful and less crowded than Paris, but with enough things to do in town or in the area to keep you busy. It's also laidback, and a great way to experience French life outside the capital city. A bientôt.

Oh, yay!!! Your feedback is invaluable! I've also heard it has a very 'pure' accent:) I refuse to use a car in a country with such a good rail system. I've noticed how well-connected Tours is. I will formulate questions. Merci beaucoup

Also look at the Institut de Touraine. They're excellent. I studied there 2 times and have gone for teacher trainings as well. Tours is the perfect little city "à la taille humaine". Always something going on, beautiful, historic, and great food.

Thank you! The situation I'm currently experiencing is, that as a mature student and a complete beginner, I don't know where I can do an intensive (3+ hrs/ day) language class. Clé, although wonderful with very small classes, only offers one hr tutoring unless there happens to be other beginners. I admit to not noticing that...I will look into the school you suggest, I've heard it's very good, also .

We stayed in Tours for 4 nights in 2022 and enjoyed it very much. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

“France with Vero” on YouTube has several videos on Tours, showing you what a beautiful city it is. She has also done videos on the Loire Valley, which cover the highlights and hidden gems of the region.

Thank you! I'll start my day with it:)
