The Return of Corporate Travel in 2022
As COVID-19 began to spread around the world and air travel ground to a halt as people all over the world stayed home under different levels of lockdown, corporate travel nearly shut down. Companies restricted travel to only those trips deemed absolutely essential and wrapped in several layers of executive approval. Client meetings, pitch meetings, and even board meetings were conducted over Zoom and Microsoft Teams resulting in company travel expenses declining 71% in 2020 . It also left the entire ecosystem built on business travel, from hotels and airlines to transportation services in shambles.
The lockdown on travel also saw companies realize not only the financial impact of travel on their bottom lines but also on the environment. The availability, low-cost, and ubiquitous adoption of tools for online meetings, conferences, and even virtual get-togethers has woken businesses up to easily being able to axe off a huge cost while improving their carbon credentials.
In 2022, as social and travel restrictions have been lifted around the world, travel itself has bounced back even as it has changed significantly . Business travel too has returned with over 50% of respondents in an April Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) member survey stating that they are developing a timeline for the resumption of travel while Deloitte projects business travel spend to reach 80% of 2019 levels at the end of 2022. Despite the visible growth and growing confidence however, the rebound in corporate travel is proving to be slower than leisure. This follows travel patterns following catastrophic events such as the 2008 financial crisis and September 11 terrorist attacks. The uncertainties brought on by the war in Ukraine, the continuing lockdown in some parts of China, rising inflation, and fears of new COVID variants will mean a slow recovery to reach previous highs. On the other hand, the easing of any or all of these worries can lead to a faster recovery.
GBTA, in its annual outlook , predicts global business travel to make a full recovery by the end of 2024, reaching $1.48 trillion to end above 2019 (pre-pandemic) spend of $1.4 trillion. Despite setbacks, it expects a year-on-year surge of 38% in 2022 with spending reaching over $1 trillion, and a year-over-year growth of 23% in 2023. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) echoes this with a forecasted growth of 34% in 2022. The Asia-Pacific is expected to lead the recovery in 2022 with a growth in spend of 41%, followed closely by America with 35% and the Middle East with 32%.
7 Corporate Travel Trends for 2022
As corporate travel rebounds, making a slower but steady recovery, pandemic-led effects like the digitization of business interactions and the slow return to the workplace, corporate fiscal tightening, increased concern for sustainability impacts and changes in perspective and behavior on the part of employees have all resulted in a business travel landscape that looks quite different to the contours of the pre-pandemic terrain. Here are the top 7 business travel trends for 2022.
1. End of the One-Day Trip
The old days of travelling for just one meeting are gone. Over the past two years not only has the full impact of corporate travel on the bottom line hit home for companies but employees have also shown themselves to be able to function just as well if not better without having to travel a lot. Together with the greater focus on fiscal conservatism in the post-pandemic era, travelling one whole day for just any one meeting is now a thing of the past.
Businesses have also learned which meetings absolutely require travel and which can be conducted just as well virtually. According to Deloitte’s corporate travel survey , respondents believe travelling to help establish and foster client relationships as the most important and least replaceable by technology.
2. Vacation Rentals Gain a Bigger Foothold
Traditionally, corporate travelers have stayed at hotels , preferring the ease of checking in and out, standardized rooms and amenities, business centers, relative anonymity, and the ability to stay in the heart of the city. The period of remote work brought on by pandemic lockdowns however saw employees choosing to stay for long periods of time in vacation rentals with their families whilst working, opening up new prospects for private rentals. In summer 2021, 28% of rental travelers stayed at one for the first time during the pandemic, rising to 43% by the holiday season. By the 2021 holiday season, 3 in 4 new rental travelers said they would continue to opt for the accommodation type even after the pandemic. Some corporates also got in on the action. Salesforce introduced its Success from Anywhere program during the pandemic, allowing employees to travel to an offsite or another office location and stay at an Airbnb they chose.
Hotels are likely to fight back by reconfiguring offerings, providing a live-in coworking experience including spacious rooms and improving wi-fi speeds. The Great Resignation however can leave at least some hotels struggling to cope as staffing challenges lead to less service on an already pandemic induced reduced offering. The US hotel industry had 300,000 fewer worker s as of October 2021 compared to 2019 while in the UK , 58% of employees identified pandemic-induced industry staff shortages as the biggest challenge .
3. Mixing Business and Leisure
Blending business and leisure, ‘bleisure’ continues to buzz in the corporate travel market. As the lines between work, travel and personal life blurred, many people chose to enjoy a long working holiday with their families and pets in tow at rural locations . While employees begin to return to offices however hybrid and flexible work options continue for many, making long term rentals and bleisure trips a continuing trend. In response, Airbnb, the largest online travel company, recently unveiled Airbnb Split Stays and Airbnb Categories , the biggest update to the platform in the past decade.
According to Morning Consult’s February 2022 report , the share of former frequent travelers who plan on taking a bleisure trip this year is almost equal to those who will travel only for business. Meanwhile, the American Hotel & Lodging Association’s (AHLA) 2022 State of the Hotel Industry report found that 89% of global corporate travelers hoped to add a private holiday to their business trips over the next 12 months.
4. Returning to Base
A fresh trend in the business travel world, ‘return to base’ is the reverse of the old model of employees flying out of corporate headquarters to do business elsewhere. In return to base travel, remote workers are called into headquarters from time to time. A great example is Salesforce, with its new 75-acre, 140-room ‘Trailblazer Ranch’ campus in Scotts Valley, California that was conceived as a gathering place for its workforce of 70,000, most of whom work remotely or on a hybrid model.
5. Business Conferences and Corporate Retreats Rebound
As in-person business conferences and staff retreats return, destination-specific business events will see higher traction. Having spent so long out of the office and mostly interacting with colleagues virtually, leaders and employees are eager to enjoy in-person interactions. Dubbed the ‘Great Reconnection’, the trend will only be bolstered by people continuing to work from home full- and part-time as it makes such events a bigger necessity as well as more affordable due to the trimming of regular business travel. The trend has even given rise to a boom in retreat-planning startups such as NextRetreat and Troop .
6. The Sustainability Factor
The pandemic-led near-total shutdown of corporate travel also brought companies to the realization of the environmental impact of their business travels. As a focus on carbon emissions and sustainability becomes a bigger imperative for businesses of all types and sizes, cutting down on travel allows organizations to easily improve green credentials without restructuring or realigning processes and suppliers. According to Deloitte , half of the companies say they are optimizing business travel policies to support sustainability goals while 1 in 10 companies expect a reduction of travel budgets by 11-25% by 2025 to increase sustainability.
Aside from cutting down on travel, businesses are also looking to make travel more sustainable, choosing to stay in hotels with great sustainability credentials, for example. In London, the Green Tourism gold-accredited One Aldwych practices sustainable food sourcing, on-site composting, and biodegradable amenity packaging while Good Hotel, a building repurposed from a derelict floating hotel, donates its profits to social causes around the world. Many will look to travel management companies for guidance, providing new opportunities to help corporate clients achieve a greener travel footprint.
7. Safety & Flexibility Still a Priority
Even as mask mandates and other restrictions have eased in most places, safety and flexibility will continue to remain a priority. Business travelers will expect sanitized spaces, single-use amenities, minimal contact and self-check-in . The continuing focus has in fact led to an increase in the use of private jets allowing business leaders and C-suite executives to enjoy minimal touchpoints, spaced out seating and uncrowded planes, as well as custom services. Flexible cancellation policies too continue to be an expectation as uncertainties in the global climate remain.

The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022
These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .
When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.
The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."
Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.
Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."
No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.
1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.
A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

The State of Corporate Travel and Expense 2022
The past 18 months have profoundly impacted the corporate travel space, with rapid developments underway in areas such as the future of office and work culture, evolving company travel policies, employee safety, and the overall reorientation of business travel planning and programming in the post-pandemic environment. But as 2021 draws to a close, corporate travel and spend is recovering at a marked clip. So while there are still reasons for uncertainty, there are also plenty of signs of optimism as the industry looks ahead to 2022.
One major area of interest is how quickly business travel will fully return. U.S. domestic travel made a dramatic rebound in summer 2021, with travelers surging back to major urban centers that they had avoided during the height of the pandemic. Comparative data from TripActions finds that summer volume was up across the board in 20 major U.S. cities, led by Las Vegas and New York City, up 519 percent and 471 percent, respectively, over summer 2020. Assuming this trend continues, domestic travel is on track to reach pre-pandemic levels as early as 2022. While lagging behind the leisure segment, business travel is projected to catch up at a similar pace.
Another area of evolution is with the products and services offered by corporate travel and spend platforms, which must continue to adapt to meet the changing needs of corporate travelers. This includes a growing focus on employee safety, along with new topics such as better management of employee spending and overall company expense management.
Amidst all of this, companies are bringing employees back to the office — and even, in industries such as banking and finance, requiring their return — while other sectors are navigating a future of remote work and team travel. And in bellwether destinations like Las Vegas, large-scale meetings, conventions, and live events are surging anew.
How these developments will impact business travel has yet to be determined. However, early data from the industry suggests that remote work’s impact on employee trips is not an all-or-nothing proposition. Some business travel may decline, while other new forms of work trips, like offsites and team meetups, may increase in frequency.
This latest report from Skift and TripActions incorporates survey-based feedback on all these topics from more than 1,100 global finance and corporate travel and spend managers, as well as 500-plus business travelers, with insights from industry leaders. And it finds a generally improved outlook over last year aligned with the developments noted above.
Of course, the environment remains dynamic, as markets and economies confront the spread of coronavirus variants across the U.S. and abroad. The lack of universal access to vaccines, compounded by a patchwork of divergent governmental policies and travel limits, also present near-term challenges for a globalized recovery.
Yet amid these curveballs, new technologies and innovations born during the pandemic will help alleviate challenges, while setting corporate travel on a reimagined and retooled course for the future. Within every crisis lie the seeds of opportunity; and as with any departure from the status quo, new assumptions and paradigms point to the definite silver linings playbook for business travel.
In this report:
- The results of a survey of more than 1,100 corporate travel and expense decision makers and more than 500 business travelers examining shifting attitudes toward corporate travel and expense.
- A review of the growing importance of corporate travel payments and spend management in company decision making.
- An examination of how the shift toward remote work will impact corporate travel habits and spending.
- An exploration of how organizations and business travel platforms are elevating their employee support and health and safety features.
- In-depth interviews with corporate travel managers, meetings and event executives, and leading business travel thought leaders on how the industry is evolving.

IRS Tax Tip 2022-104, July 11, 2022
Business travel can be costly. Hotel bills, airfare or train tickets, cab fare, public transportation – it can all add up fast. The good news is business travelers may be able to off-set some of those costs by claiming business travel deductions when they file their taxes.
Here are some details about these valuable deductions that all business travelers should know.
Business travel deductions are available when employees must travel away from their tax home or main place of work for business reasons. The travel period must be substantially longer than an ordinary day's work and a need for sleep or rest to meet the demands the work while away.
Travel expenses must be ordinary and necessary. They can't be lavish, extravagant or for personal purposes.
Employers can deduct travel expenses paid or incurred during a temporary work assignment if the assignment length does not exceed one year.
Travel expenses for conventions are deductible if attendance benefits the business and there are special rules for conventions held outside North America .
Deductible travel expenses while away from home include the costs of:
- Travel by airplane, train, bus or car between your home and your business destination.
- Fares for taxis or other types of transportation between an airport or train station to a hotel, from a hotel to a work location.
- Shipping of baggage and sample or display material between regular and temporary work locations.
- Using a personally owned car for business which can include an increase in mileage rates .
- Lodging and non-entertainment-related meals .
- Dry cleaning and laundry.
- Business calls and communication.
- Tips paid for services related to any of these expenses.
- Other similar ordinary and necessary expenses related to the business travel.
Self-employed or farmers with travel deductions
- Those who are self-employed can deduct travel expenses on Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship) .
- Farmers can use Schedule F (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Farming .
Travel deductions for the National Guard or military reserves
National Guard or military reserve servicemembers can claim a deduction for unreimbursed travel expenses paid during the performance of their duty .
Recordkeeping
Well-organized records make it easier to prepare a tax return. Keep records, such as receipts, canceled checks, and other documents that support a deduction.

TRIP Incorporates Adaptogen In 4 New Blends And Launches Mindful Range. Pictured: TRIP's original ... [+] CBD range
TRIP , UK’s largest private soft drinks company with a focus on mindfulness and wellness, has launched its new range of proprietary functional blends, incorporating mushrooms and adaptogens in 4 fresh flavors.
Having created the brand new drinking category of “calm” and making its CBD-infused beverages a must-have amongst Gen Zs and Millennials despite the stigma traditionally attached to the hemp-derived ingredient, TRIP ’s new range, launched with 4 SKUs formulated with Lion’s Mane, Magnesium, and Ashwagandha, offers a new way to find calm in the every day chaos that is modern life.
Ponting out that the emerging ingredients have been gathering momentum and going viral due to their healing and soothing powers, Olivia Ferdi, cofounder of TRIP, says the brand “have led the growth of the functional drinks category and are excited to continue the trailblazing impact in the sector.”

“As consumers continue to prioritize health and wellness, the new Mindful Blend provides an accessible way to incorporate these trending ingredients into your lifestyle and a new way to unwind,” Ferdi adds. “Millions already find calm through the functionality of our CBD drinks, and seeing the increased demand and popularity of these ingredients has made it clear that there is a market for us to expand into a new range of soft drinks.”
The new functional drinks will debut with two exclusive flavors, Cucumber Mint and Blood Orange Rosemary, alongside two of the most popular flavors from its core range, Elderflower Mint and Raspberry Orange Blossom. “The flavors are inspired by memories of good times and favorite cocktails,” Ferdi explains, and says the unique blend aims to provide consumers with a new way to find calm through the powerful and popular health benefits of these functional ingredients, in an accessible canned form.
Having cut through to bring the notion of “better for you” to the mainstream, TRIP’s rapid growth reflects how clearly welcomed such a move is by the modern day consumers who are ever more mental health conscious. Since the brand’s inception in 2019, TRIP as a business has gone from strength to strength. Merely a year on since my last interview with the brand’s cofounders, TRIP’s retail coverage in the UK has gone from 15,000, as per March 2023, to over 25,000 as the list of stockists stands currently. TRIP continues to be UK’s no.1 CBD brand and the fastest growing soft drink company in January 2024.

Launching alongside the new Mindful Blend will be TRIP’s first ever TV campaign, aiming at driving further brand awareness and the importance of looking after one’s mental wellbeing. Speaking of this key milestone, Ferdi says: “Our mission is to help millions of people find calm and make plant-powered wellbeing accessible to all. This nationwide campaign is a key step to helping millions of people by driving awareness of this new way to unwind and find calm, naturally.”
