Riverfire 2023: The best spots to watch the fireworks, how to get there, and when to catch the RAAF air show

The Brisbane River and skyline at night illuminated by a fireworks display.

It's that time of year again: Queensland's largest firework display, Riverfire, is set to light up the sky and kick off this year's Brisbane Festival with a bang.

When is Riverfire?

Saturday, September 2 from 4pm until 8pm .

Riverfire marks the start of Brisbane Festival, a three-week program of music, art and culture running from September 1 to 23.

When will the fireworks start?

People inspecting some fireworks.

Fireworks will run from 7:05pm to 7:25pm and will spark from rooftops, barges and bridges at 15 separate sites across the city.

A crew of 25 have been working hard to prepare more than 11 tonnes of fireworks for the show.

What time is the RAAF flyover?

The iconic flyovers will kick off with a C17A Globemaster at 5pm , followed by an EA-18G Growler at 5:15pm.

Practice flyovers were held on Friday — click through the gallery to view the pictures.

However, a display by the Army Tiger Helicopter has been cancelled.

Group Captain Bent Taylor said the army had elected not to participate in flying displays for "the time being" out of respect to those who lost their lives in recent military aircraft incidents in the Whitsundays and Tiwi Islands .

"While Army will not be participating in this year's Riverfire event, we look forward to being part of future events and flying demonstrations," he said.

"Army apologises to everyone who was looking forward to seeing the ARH, and asks for understanding at this difficult time for us and our friends from the United States Marine Corps."

You can watch the practice flyovers that were held on Friday in the Live Moment below.

If you missed the flyover, you can catch it again on Saturday

Crowds gather in Brisbane to watch the RAAF flyover.

That's a wrap on our live coverage for today, but we'll leave you with these photos and videos from our reporters out and about around South Bank.

You can also watch it all again tomorrow — the iconic flyovers will kick off with a C17A Globemaster at   5pm , followed by an EA-18G Growler at   5:15pm.

Kenji: Scattered cheers erupted from the crowd as the C17 aircrafts thundered onto the scene about 20 minutes late. Tradies clad in hi-vis stood shoulder to shoulder with office workers along the Clem Jones Promenade as the jets roared overhead.

Where can I watch Riverfire?

The best spots to view the fireworks are:

  • Kangaroo Point Cliffs
  • Captain Burke Park
  • Wilson Outlook Reserve
  • City Botanic Gardens
  • River Terrace at Kangaroo Point
  • Victoria Bridge
  • Dock Street, South Brisbane
  • Howard Smith Wharves

People giving the thumbs up on a barge with fireworks.

As many as 500,000 spectators are expected to turn out for the show that is set to be the biggest yet.

The show will feature 25,000 fireworks and will be accompanied by a soundtrack curated by homegrown musicians Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nutall.

What else is happening?

Brisbane Festival Artistic Director, Louise Bezzina, says this year's Riverfire is more than just a spectacular firework show.

"There is a full suite of beautiful and free programming to be dazzled by on Saturday," she said.

Drone show to light up the night

This year will also see 400 drones take to the sky for a light show following the fireworks.

NIEERGOO: Spirit of the Whale drone show is directed by Traditional Owner and storyteller, Shannon Ruska.

The words WARARR BRISBANE are lit up in neon lights in Southbank, Brisbane.

The show will centre around the Queen's Wharf project and use light to bring to life Dreamtime stories from the Yuggera and Toorbul peoples.

The show will run at 7:45pm and 9:15pm on Saturday and again on Sunday evening at 7:15pm, 8:15pm and 9:15pm.

Brisbane's (latest) pedestrian bridge opens

The newly completed Neville Bonner Bridge will welcome 500 people to be the very first to walk across on Saturday morning.

"Riverfire brings the whole community together, it's one of our most iconic Brisbane events," says Ms Bezzina.

"I'm so excited to see the city come to life in such a beautiful way."

What roads will be closed?

More than 60 roads across the city will be closed on Saturday.

Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point are the most impacted suburbs, as well as Brisbane City and South Brisbane.

Here is the full list of road closures.

How should I get to Riverfire?

Brisbane City Council buses drive down Adelaide Street in Brisbane's CBD

Translink will be operating many additional services on the day to assist movement throughout the city.

Free bus and train services to stations around South Bank and the city will run from 7:30pm to 9pm .

  • Cultural Centre Station will be closed from 6pm on Saturday so make sure to hop off at South Bank station if you're planning to watch the show from the Festival Garden.
  • The river will close from 6:30pm to 7:30pm on Saturday, meaning no ferry services will be available between Mowbray Park and Milton terminals.
  • QUT terminal will be closed from 4pm Saturday until Sunday morning due to its proximity to the fireworks.

What not to bring to South Bank

You cannot bring pets, scooters, bikes, drones, bottles with broken seals, glass, metal cutlery or alcohol into the South Bank Parklands.

Security will not allow these things through.

Why has Riverfire moved to the start of the Festival?

Brisbane Festival events, including Riverfire , will adhere to current COVID-19 restrictions as specified in the Queensland Chief Health Officer Public Health Directions.

Here are some tips to ensure your animals are safe and secure:

Contain your animal in your house or garage overnight; ensure there is a comfortable bed, plenty of water and some food.

It is advisable to close the curtains and turn on the TV or radio to provide some distraction.

Leave your pet with a friend or family member who is not going out.

Always ensure your pet wears appropriate identification, just in case they do escape. If your dog becomes distressed during fireworks or thunder, speak to your local veterinarian as they may be able to recommend something to help keep animals calm.

For more information on caring for your pets during Riverfire head to the RSPCA’s website .

Will there be additional public transport services for Riverfire ?

Additional Citytrain, bus and Citycat services will operate to and from Riverfire . For full information about timetabled services, fares, temporary stops and additional services visit the TransLink website or call 13 12 30 closer to the event.

More information will be available on the TransLink website closer to the event.

Can I use a drone during Riverfire ?

Due to the increased risk posed by low-flying aircraft and fireworks during the event and practice days, drones are prohibited to be flown within 1500m of the event venue areas (i.e. Brisbane City, South Brisbane, Kangaroo Point and Fortitude Valley) at any time, as such flights may pose a significant risk to both the aircraft and people viewing the event on the ground. Further information about the safe use of drones can be found on the CASA website.

How does Brisbane Festival manage the environmental impact of fireworks?

Foti Fireworks Queensland are the creators of Riverfire ; they are a leading manufacturer of fireworks and the most awarded fireworks display company in Australia.

Since March 2009 Foti has been offsetting the carbon emissions of all its business operations by purchasing carbon credits with the Carbon Reduction Institute, with certification that Foti has purchased sufficient credits in order to remain carbon neutral.

Foti actively reduces waste created from its operations and maximises the use of recyclable and sustainable materials in all of its processes. Their materials management strategy aims to reduce the use of toxic and environmentally unfriendly materials from its fireworks products.

Consideration is given to all areas of the manufacturing process of fireworks. Foti is a leader in the fireworks display industry for reducing the amount of perchlorate in its fireworks products. The company’s management strategy is evolving as more technologies become available and suitable chemical substitutes are found.

Will there be a dump and burn?

There will not be a dump and burn this year. The last F-111 dump and burn was in 2010. The practice, which started in 1998, was stopped because the planes replacing the F-111s did not have the ability to do a dump and burn.

River cruise at any season

It's a captivating two-hour cruise on the Moskva River aboard a modern 50-metre yacht. Two promenade decks offer panoramic visibility of Moscow and large restaurant and bar available on board.

Dear WeHeartMoscow thank you for leaving comments! Yacht "Radisson" can become the perfect place for spending time with family or romantic dinners! Flotilla "Radisson Royal" is a combination of amazing yachts ice class and a full-fledged restaurant, through which the Muscovites and visitors can enjoy river cruises 365 days a year! Also on the 1st of May the second year at a run the 1.5-hour rapid cruises for those who like to keep up with everything are taking place! Will be glad to see You again! With best wishes, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager of flotilla "Radisson Royal".

That's an excelent way to have a good diner. Buy a ticket of the Radission cruise - take advantage to know this astonishing hotel and "welcome on board!". The cruise allows you to know the most important buildings and monuments of Moscow as Kremlin, St. Basil's cathedral, the Moscow state university, the cathedral of our Savior, and others. I had a nightly cruise also and, as Paris, the experience was as good as during the day; and the diner was very delicious, including the wine and the dessert.

Hello, dear Pvassal! Thank you for the feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal". Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Also on the 1st of May the second year at a run the 1.5-hour rapid cruises for those who like to keep up with everything are taking place! We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

I didn't know quite what to expect from this river cruise, however I arrived at the pier an hour before departure. Due to the cold I decided to go in to the Radisson hotel for a drink and to burn some time. The hotel itself is very impressive and there's a lot of rich snobs spending some serious money in this place. When we finally boarded the river cruise, we had an ideal seat next to the window. I would say this is the best way to see Moscow, sipping a cold beer and having some nice food, while observing the city out the window. Definitely recommend this to any traveller going to Moscow!

Hello, dear mrtomo3! Thank you for your feedback about Flotilla Radisson Royal. It’s very important for us to know the opinion of each guest. Our company organizes cruises 365 days a year. Ice class of yachts allows not stop navigation in winter: they move on the ice so smoothly and quietly that only the changing landscapes of Moscow historical centre can remind you that you are in the cruise. And Now every Thursday, Friday, Saturday cruises flotilla "Radisson" with live musical accompaniment. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

The views are fantastic and the food is excellent. Maria (a bilingual waitress on the first ride) was an extremely helpful hostess who answered in perfect English every inquire I had about Moscow.

Hello, TecunUman! Thank you for your feedback about your cruise on the yacht "Radisson Royal" . Flotilla “Radisson Royal” has 10 perfectly equipped yachts designed for year-round entertaining excursion cruises on the Moscow River with restaurant service aboard. Our main goal is to provide high quality services that will allow you to fully enjoy your trip and come back to us again. Come on our thematic cruises and food festivals, you will discover still a lot. Flotilla "Radisson Royal » has prepared something special for couples and good friends - it is the most important thing for it to choose the right yacht. We will be glad to see you again on Board our yachts! Best regards, Olga Tkacheva, brand-Manager.

Great trip - went at 8pm and saw the city at night. The food isn't very good at all, sadly, but the journey is. 2.5 hrs there and back. Totally recommended.

Dear Ads7788, thank you for your comment. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the rolling stock, the menu is presented on yachts, may not be as diverse and exquisite in the filing like in stationary restaurants. We invite You to go on a cruise in Royal class yacht "Montana" - especially for fans of live music, a relaxed atmosphere and creative cuisine with an emphasis in Russian style! With best wishes, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager flotilla "Radisson Royal".

My mom and I enjoyed the boat cruise in early December. It was so cool to see all of the ice on the river. The food and service were solidly above average. There was also a photographer on board to provide a souvenir at a low additional cost. It does take a bit of time to get there from Red Square so plan accordingly.

Dear Samantha K, thank you for your comment. Such reviews are pushing to implement new ideas and achieve higher results in order to continue to please our guests! We invite You to go on a cruise in Royal class yacht "Montana" - especially for fans of live music, a relaxed atmosphere and creative cuisine with an emphasis in Russian style! With best wishes, Olga Tkacheva, brand Manager flotilla "Radisson Royal".

'Drunk' 20-year-old man missing after jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship

  • A 20-year-old man on holiday with his family jumped off a Royal Caribbean cruise.
  • The man has been missing since jumping overboard in front of his father and brother.
  • The US Coast Guard has launched a search operation.

A 20-year-old man jumped off the Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas cruise on Thursday morning while vacationing with his family.

The passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, jumped overboard at about 4 a.m. and has been missing since.

The US Coast Guard said on X on Thursday that its crews were "searching for a 20-year-old man who went overboard from the Liberty of the Seas cruise ship near The Bahamas.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider in a statement: "Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Passengers on the Liberty of the Seas ship described the tragedy as a "spur-of-the-moment decision."

Passenger Bryan Sims told the New York Post that the missing passenger was "pretty drunk" and that they had hung out in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m.

Sims said that when they left the hot tub, they encountered the drunk passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," said Sims.

The unidentified passenger reportedly told his father, "I'll fix this right now," and jumped out of the window.

Fellow passengers said his father and brother witnessed the "impulsive" leap.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The US Coast Guard said USCG Cutter Seneca and Air Station Miami HC-144 crews were conducting the search.

The Liberty of the Seas departed from South Florida and was 57 miles from Great Inagua in The Bahamas when the passenger jumped overboard.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate 3,634 passengers, served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of you falling overboard off a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, About 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and about 10 people went overboard, of which two miraculously survived, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," CLIA told Business Insider, explaining that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard from 2009 to 2019 were successfully rescued.

Man Arrested for Allegedly Taking a Decommissioned NYC Fireboat for an Overnight Cruise

Police say a man has been arrested for allegedly taking a decommissioned New York City fireboat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River

A man was arrested Thursday, April 11, 2024, for allegedly taking the decommissioned New York City fire boat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River, before becoming stuck and jumping ship. NEW YORK (AP) — A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly taking a decommissioned New York City fireboat for an overnight cruise on the Hudson River, before becoming stuck, jumping ship and stealing another vessel, police said.

He was charged with two counts of grand larceny, officials said. He had not been arraigned as of Thursday afternoon and it was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The man commandeered the fireboat, known as the John J. Harvey, by untying it from its mooring at Pier 66 off the west side of Manhattan, according to authorities. The 130 foot (40 meter) long vessel, which now serves as a museum, earned local acclaim after it was used to evacuate survivors of 9/11.

Once aboard the fireboat, the man was able to drift a short distance into the Hudson River, police said, but quickly got stuck. He leapt overboard, plunging into the frigid waters and later emerging on a second stolen vessel, according to police.

He navigated that sailboat toward Pier 51, roughly 15 blocks south of the original location, police said. The department’s Harbor Unit responded to a 2:30 a.m. call about a stolen boat and arrested the man on the sailboat’s deck.

A spokesperson for the Hudson River Park Trust, which oversees Pier 66, said the fireboat is secure and being assessed for damage.

Built in 1931, the Harvey assisted in several dramatic marine rescues, helping to put out a potentially catastrophic fire aboard the El Estero, a munitions ship docked in the New York Harbor during World War II.

It was retired in 1994, but was called back into service on the morning of 9/11 to help pick up survivors and to pump water onto the site.

The boat’s caretakers offer occasional free public cruises along the Hudson River.
