Bangalore to Gokarna Road Trip Blog | A Beautifull Journey & Experience

Bangalore Gokarna Road Trip

Bangalore to Gokarna Road Trip -“I climb behind the steering wheel, I drive off immediately without once looking back; it’s a long journey, but it leads to freedom.” –Corinne Hofmann

Do you believe in the above quotes? Do you think you need a much-needed break from your monotonous life? I would then recommend you reading out my story on a road trip covering almost 1200 Km.

Before I begin narrating my road trip story, let me tell you that I have a full-time job with personal life and I get only weekends to travel and explore. One thing I have learned is, if you plan well and put in some effort, you can enjoy the best part of life as you aspire.

WHY LONG ROAD TRIP?

A long weekend was approaching, and it had been a while since I took a break from my mundane city life and spent some quality time with nature.

Hence, it’s time to connect back to my real self, press that accelerator in full throttle and drive far-far away from the bustling city.

But what ideal location would fulfill my yearning for a calm, serene and adventurous experience, I did some research and decided upon this route Bangalore to Chikmagalur to Jog Falls to Gokarna & back to the city

BANGALORE to GOKARNA DAY WISE ITINERARY

Bangalore Gokarna road trip

The day-wise itinerary, places we stayed at and activities we indulge in are as below:

  • Day 1 – Drive from Bangalore to Chikamagalur
  • Stay at Zostel.
  • Sunset at Hirekolale Lake
  • Day 2 – Visit Bababudangiri
  • Drive from Chikamagalur to Jog Falls
  • Stay at Mayura Hotel
  • an evening at Jog Falls
  • Day 3- Morning at Jog Fall
  • Drive from Jog Falls to Gokarna
  • Stay at Namaste Sanjeevni – Gokarna
  • Evening at Kudle Beach
  • Day 4- Gokarna Beach Hike

5. Day 5- Gokarna Zostel

  • Drive back to Bangalore

DAY1: BANGALORE TO  CHIKMAGALUR

Driving early is the easiest way to avoid traffic hence, we started the drive from Bangalore at 8 am. The drive to Chikmagalur via Bangalore-Hassan highway was very comfortable; also, it’s a toll road most of the way. With breakfast break on the highway, we reached Chikmagalur by 2 PM.

ZOSTEL CHIKMAGALUR

zostel Chikmagaluru

After hearing many positive stories and reviews about zostel, I really wanted to experience a community stay. Zostel is 7km from the Chikmagalur city bus stand and has options for a private room and a bed in a dormitory.

There is a cafe inside the campus that serves limited options; tea, coffee, omelet & Maggi for breakfast and veg/non-veg thali for lunch and dinner. Situated amidst the coffee and black pepper plantation, the place is very peaceful.

REVIEWS & CONCLUSION

zostel Chikmagalur

The interiors are nicely done to give the place a traditional south Indian look, which gives it a very homely vibe. We stayed in a private room, which was spacious and clean, but the dormitories looked a little congested.

To conclude, the place has a lot of potentials and it felt like so much more can be done to add soul to this zostel. It’s a good place if you are looking for a budget stay away from the crowd and noise of the city.

SUNSET AT HIREKOLALE LAKE

Hirekolale Lake Chikmagalur

After resting for some time, we headed to Hirekolale lake for sunset. The lake is around 20km from the city (paved tar road all the way) and took us 30 minutes to reach there. Surrounded by hills and coffee estate, it’s a pristine and peaceful place to spend your evening.

There are no activities on the lake, and that’s what keeps the water and surrounding so clean. If you have some time in hand, do stay post-sunset to have the lake all by yourself, enjoy the cool breeze and watch the mesmerizing sky sparkling with stars.

DAY 2: VISIT TO BABABUDANGIRI

Bababudangiri Chikmagalur

Bababudangiri is located at 33km from the city and will take around 1-1.5 hrs to reach there despite a good cement road. The drive is beautiful, it’s an uphill drive with some steep hairpin bends; so be a little careful while driving.

I would highly recommend visiting here early morning to avoid the traffic, as the place gets crowded. If you need some peaceful time away from the crowd, the trick is to take the road less traveled.

HOW TO GET THE BEST VIEW

Bababudangiri Chikmagalur

Once you reach the Dargah, there will be two ways, one on the right going up where most cars will be going, and the other one on left alongside the dargah boundary wall.

Take the road towards left of the dargah and drive till the road ends, there will be a small place on the edge to park your car/bike and post that walk on an unpaved path that goes up.

There you will find a small pond and a temple, walk past them towards the left and you will be amazed by the view. This is the most scenic place in Chikmagalur; carry some snacks and water. If you are like me, you will live to spend your day gazing at the lush green hills.

DAY 2: DRIVE FROM CHIKMAGALUR TO JOG FALLS

bababudangiri panorama

The distance from Chikmagalur to jog falls is around 205 km. We left Bababudangiri (Chikmagalur) by noon and with a lunch break on the way, reached Jog Falls by 5 PM. The most exciting part of the drive was the first 60 km on SH57 through western ghats.

STAY AT MAYURA HOTEL – JOG FALLS

Mayura_Hotel_View From Room

View from the Room

We stayed at Mayura Hotel which is a KSTDC hotel located inside the jog falls entry gate. If you are visiting jog falls, I would highly recommend staying here as this is the only hotel inside the gate and you can spend all your time enjoying the beauty of the falls.

The best part is all rooms have a waterfall view. It’s difficult to get a booking here as there are only 8-10 rooms, so book in advance. The room tariff is fixed; the AC room would cost INR 4247 on weekend and INR 3539 on weekdays and non-ac rooms would cost INR 3539 on weekend and INR 2974 on weekdays.

You can book on the KSTDC website or booking.com. The rooms are very spacious, sparkling clean and have a huge window facing the falls. There is a cafeteria inside the fall entry gate for tourists that serve pretty good food.

You can only order room service for dinner and evening tea; for breakfast, you will have to go to a cafe. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend if you plan to spend the night at jog falls.

AN EVENING AT JOG FALLS

jog falls sunset

We reached a perfect time for sunset, there is a sunset viewpoint at small walking distance from falls. The clouds were floating in the sky, to end the day with the most beautiful and serene picturesque view ever.

Post dinner we went for a walk and the sky was brightened up by millions of stars; this gave our exciting day a calm ending.

DAY 3 – MORNING AT JOG FALLS

Jog Falls

We woke up at 6 am to see the sunrise at falls. The morning view of the fall is magnificent and peaceful. It’s the best time to click photographs as there are hardly any visitors at the early hours.

I did some morning yoga overlooking the falls, breathing in the cool fresh air; it was so refreshing. After 2 hours at falls, we headed to the cafeteria for morning tea.

DAY 3 – DRIVE FROM JOG FALLS TO GOKARNA

Gokarna is 110 km from jog falls and non-stop drive will take around 2.5-3hrs. Post breakfast, we checked out at 11 am and started drive to next & destination Gokarna .

Although it was a 2.5-3 hours’ drive, we took some detours and stopped on the way to explore the forest and surprise hike to the waterfall and reached Gokarna by 5 PM (our target was to see the sunset on the beach, and we made it).

The whole point of a road trip is to explore the unexplored & document our experience.

STAY AT NAMASTE SANJEEVNI – GOKARNA

namaste_sanjeevni_gokarna

We stayed for 2 nights at Namaste Sanjeevni. It is located at a walking distance from Kudle beach and there are no street lights so you will have to use torch while returning from the beach at night (it’s very safe though).

The resort has different categories of the room that serves everyone from the budget traveler to high spenders.

It’s a lush green resort which gives you the feeling of staying amidst nature. The added advantage is a swimming pool, which is well maintained and clean. There is no room service and no telephone provided in the room, so you will have to walk till reception if you need anything. This didn’t bother us much as we prefer eating at a restaurant where we can interact with other guests and staff.

SUSTAINABILITY CONCERN?

The one thing that bothered me most was that the only option of drinking water was bottled water, there was no water filter from where guests can refill. I feel this was very environmentally unfriendly.

Overall a great experience, perfect location, great food, and friendly staff.

EVENING AT KUDLE BEACH

Kudle Beach Sunset

Sunset from the cliff at Elephant beach resort

Kudle beach lies between the Om beach and Gokarna main beach. It’s a very calm and clean beach. We walked along the coast enjoying the breeze and the serene sunset.

The other less crowded option to enjoy the sunset and get a panoramic view of ocean is by walking up to the cliff through the White Elephant resort.

There are many restaurants along the shore for evening snacks and dinner. We retired at the shack for the evening where we enjoyed dinner listening to the sound of waves.

DAY 4 – GOKARNA BEACH HIKE

Gokarna Beach Hike

Gokarna beach hike covers 5 beaches in the order Kudle beach, Om beach, Half moon beach, Paradise beach, and Belekan beach. Kudle, Om and Belekan beach are accessible by the road whereas one can reach half-moon and paradise beach only by foot or boat. The one-way hike covering all beaches will take around 4-5 hours.

GOKARNA BEACH HIKE DETAIL

We drove to Om beach and decided to hike till paradise beach from there. Trek was straightforward, you start walking from Namaste cafe till the end of om beach, from there you will see a path climbing uphill. After 10 mins of climbing, you will see a breathtaking view of om beach, you can see the Om shape of the beach from up there.

It will take you 30 minutes to reach Half-moon beach. Trek from half-moon to paradise is a bit tricky, there will be a water stream that you must cross to find the actual path.

HOW NOT TO GET LOST?

If you feel like you are walking away from the coast then you are on the wrong path, just walk through the hills by the sea. If you don’t get lost like us, from half-moon beach you will reach paradise beach in 30 mins.

Water in paradise beach is calm, clean and perfect for swimming. If you plan to spend a couple of hours at the beach carry beach towels, snacks, and water.  We spent around 3 hours there, as the sun was scorching, we decided to take the boat back to om beach.

Boats will be leaving almost every hour from paradise beach and will cost around INR 300 per person till Om beach. On our boat ride back, we saw a dolphin which made money spent on a boat all worth it.

DAY 5 – GOKARNA ZOSTEL

zostel gokarna

On day 5 th , we planned to head back to Bangalore, but before heading back I wanted to check the Zostel of Gokarna, so we decided to have breakfast at Mantra cafe (which is part of zostel).

The Café is at less than a km from Kudle beach, located on a cliff overlooking the main Gokarna beach. The view from here was spectacular and the place has a very friendly vibe, seemed perfect for solo and group travellers.

I was so tempted to extend my travel and stay at zostel for a day, but unfortunately, the place was fully booked. One can spend a whole day sitting in the common area, lying on a hammock, enjoying the view.

BANGALORE FROM GOKARNA

zostel gokarna view

Finally, all my attempts to stay back failed and it was time to head back to real life. We started driving back at 11 am and reached back to Bangalore by 11 PM.

Although the return journey was long, the roads were smooth and wide.  The trip was very refreshing, and I was returning with loads of wonderful memories and stories.

SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

paradise beach

To summarize, road trips give you the freedom to move and explore at your own pace. The purpose of this trip was to rejuvenate, decouple from the day to day hustle of life and take a break.

I must say that I overachieved; 5 days, 1200 km, with INR 28K (for 2 ppl) less in my pocket and with priceless memories in my heart; I returned to my routine life fully energetic and ready to take on new challenges.

The Ultimate 3-Day Gokarna Itinerary (With Prices)

Are you planning a 3-day trip to Gokarna? Gokarna is a small town situated on the coast of Karnataka, famous for its beaches and temples. I have been visiting Gokarna since 2017 and this was my fifth trip to Gokarna. Yes, that’s how much I like this place, and can never get bored of it.

In the 3-day itinerary, I mention some of the best places to visit in Gokarna , where to stay, and the best places to eat. Is this the only 3-day itinerary you have to follow? Not really, this itinerary gives you a good experience of Gokarna visiting all the beaches via the beach trek, visiting the waterfalls and some of the best temples of Karnataka!

Don’t worry, I have also shared alternative 3-day itineraries at the end of this blog for all types of travelers. Gokarna can be visited on a budget . I have shared a breakdown of the cost at the end.

Table of Contents

How to reach Gokarna

Reaching Gokarna is relatively easy whether traveling by air, train, or road.

How to reach Gokarna by air

The nearest airport to reach Gokarna is the Dabolim International Airport (Goa). It takes another three hours to reach Gokarna from the airport as it’s approximately 150 km away. Since the Goa airport is well connected to other parts of the world, it makes reaching Gokarna easier.

How to reach Gokarna by Train

The Gokarna railway station is 10 km away from the main town. Trains from several cities like Bangalore, Mangalore, Mumbai, and Madgaon (Goa) halt at the station every day. Gokarna Road Railway Station code is GOK and you can find all the details about the train below:

All the trains from Mumbai and Pune also go via Goa(Madgaon)

For trains from other destinations, please check the IRCTC website .

How to reach Gokarna by Bus

The easiest and budget-friendly way to get to Gokarna is by bus. You’ll find direct buses from nearby cities like Mangalore and Bangalore, as well as from farther places like Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai. It takes 8-12 hours, depending on the location you are traveling from. Since I was traveling from Bangalore, it took me 9-10 hours to reach Gokarna town. You can find all the bus details on Redbus .

Since all the buses reach in the early morning no matter the destination you are coming from, this Gokarna 3-day trip itinerary can be easily followed by everyone.

The best time to visit Gokarna

Gokarna is a coastal town and thus the best time to visit Gokarna is from October to March as there is little to no rainfall. If you want to beat the crowd, you should visit from April to June. But do know that it gets really hot. Monsoon is not a great time to visit if you want to experience the beaches, but one should not miss the waterfalls nearby like the Jog Falls or Vibhuti Falls.

Places to stay in Gokarna

View of Gokarna beach from Zostel

While there are many budget options for a stay in Gokarna, I loved my stay at both Trippr and Zostel. While Trippr is a little far from the main town and situated on the middle beach, it has the best beachfront views. The middle beach still hasn’t gotten crowded, thus making it a great option for a stay.

Book your stay at Trippr at no extra cost using this link: Trippr Backpacker Hostel & Zostel

Zostel , on the other hand, offers incredible views of Gokarna Beach and is an excellent spot to connect with fellow travelers. The property is stunning, and don’t forget to enjoy the cafe’s scenic views and delicious food.

Other great budget options are staying on the shacks on the Kudle Beach for which you’ll have to go there and check!

So let’s get started with my 3-day trip plan to Gokarna, starting from Bangalore.

Day 0: Taking the bus from Bangalore to Gokarna

I started from Bangalore, taking the bus from Anand Rao Circle. It takes close to 8-9 hours to reach Gokarna. The bus dropped me off early in the morning by 7 a.m., and I had booked the stay in Trippr, which is 2.5 km from the main bus stand. Now the confusion is, should I pay for the auto to go to the hostel and then come back or rent a scooter straightaway? I chose the latter because why not save some money?

Where to rent the scooter in Gokarna

While searching for scooter rentals online, I found many operators providing them. Based on the highest Google rating, I decided to choose We Gokarna Bike Rental. The bikes provided by Gagan Anna were almost new and in very good condition. I rented the scooter for two days to cover some amazing spots near Gokarna.

Scooty Cost : ₹400/day on weekdays and ₹500/day on weekends

Scooty Rentals Company in Gokarna : We Gokarna Scooty Rental

You also need to submit a govt ID, which will be returned when you return the scooty. The “We Gokarna shop” is very close to where the bus will drop you off. The shop usually opens at 7 am, and even if the shop is not open, you can call Gagan Anna and go to his house to pick up the scooties.

One more important thing you need to note is there is only one petrol pump in Gokarna.

Location : Indian Oil Petrol Pump

Staying at Trippr Hostel on the Middle Beach

After renting the scooter, I directly headed to Trippr Hostel to check in. Since it was still early, I enjoyed sitting by the beach. After my check-in, I refreshed quickly and was on my way to the first spot, the Yana caves! But before that, some breakfast.

Before heading to Yana Caves, I made a stop in town to have breakfast at my favorite place, “ Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen ”. If you want to try some authentic South Indian food in Gokarna, this has to be your go-to place. After having a nice masala dosa and coffee, I started again towards Yana Caves.

Visiting the mysterious Yana Caves

Mysteriosu Yana Caves

Yana caves are approximately 50 km from Gokarna town, and it will take you close to 1 hour 30 mins to reach there. Take the route that also has Vibhoothti Falls on the way. There are two ways to reach Yana caves, which I didn’t know until I reached there. The first one is you can drive to the Yana caves parking from where the caves are just five minutes away

The second route involves hiking for 2-3hrs.

Yana Caves are famous for their special rock formations that took thousands of years to form naturally. The main attractions here are two huge limestone rocks called Bhairaveshwara Shikara and Mohini Shikara. These caves are considered holy by Hindus and are visited by pilgrims. Read more about the Mythology of Yana Caves here .

There is also a small temple at the entry of the caves, and you can also go under and around the caves. The caves do have a bad smell because of the bats living there. You can spend a good 30-45 minutes exploring the caves before heading to relax at the Vibhhooti Falls.

Swim under the Vibhoothi Falls

Vibhoothi Falls near Gokarna

Vibhoothi Falls is just a 30-minute drive from Yana Caves. I parked my scooty in the parking and then walked towards the waterfalls. The waterfall is inside the forest and is an easy 10-minute walk from the parking. Once you reach the waterfall, you can see it cascade down from a height of 25 feet.

Since the waterfall is inside the forest, there are very few spots that receive the sunlight, making the water super cold and refreshing. The water is continuously flowing, which makes it a great spot for swimming. Don’t forget to get your swimming clothes.

You can also jump in the pool of water, but be very careful as it can be dangerous. If you don’t know how to swim and want to get near the waterfall, there is a shop renting life jackets.

Vibhoothi Falls Parking Fees : ₹10

After spending a good one hour near the waterfall, I was starting to feel hungry again as it was already 3 p.m.

Sunset at the middle beach

Beautiful Sunset at Middle Beach

After reaching back from the waterfall I immediately went to Bhagvan Cafe , which is located in the middle beach and just a 5-minute walk from Trippr. They serve some of the best starters, I guess it was also because I was very hungry.

After spending a good one hour eating and watching the beach, I decided to head back to Trippr. It was almost time for sunset. I picked my spot and got my camera to watch one of the best sunsets I have seen in Gokarna. It’s a tough competition for which is a better spot for sunset, the Kudle Beach or Middle Beach!

I then headed to Sunset Cafe Beach , which is right beside Trippr. You have to order the Shakshuka there, it was so delicious! So amazing and you can hear the waves while having food, I could sleep right there after a tiring day.

Day 2 in Gokarna: Staying at Zostel

I woke up early in the morning to have a little swim and sit by the sea. These are some of my favorite things to do, spend time by myself. I then decided to check out from Trippr and headed to Zostel.

After an amazing first day, it was time to get back to the routine of having breakfast at Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen. I ordered the dosa and the coffee again.

Today was going to involve a lot of riding because I had planned to visit Murdeshwar. Murdeshwar is approximately 82 km away from Gokarna, and it takes two hours to reach there.

Visiting the Murdeshwar temple and the Gopuram

Raaja Gopuran in Murdeshwar

While on the way to Murdeshwar, you will also pass through Honnavar, where you can explore the backwaters. Murdeshwar temple is a popular Hindu pilgrimage site, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is famous for two main things:

  • 2nd Largest Shiva statue in the world, standing at a height of 37m(~121ft)
  • 2nd Largest gopuram, which is 18 storeyed at a height of 72m(237ft)

You can see the Gopuram as soon as you enter the Murdeshwar town. After parking, I directly headed towards the temple first for the darshan. If you’re going on a weekend, you will find it really crowded and the darshan can take you anywhere between 30 minutes to 1hour.

Shiva statue view from the 18th floor of Raaja Jopuram

Just behind the Gopuram is the Shiva state, which is really humongous! Even taller and bigger than the one in Kemp Fort in Bangalore. Now comes the best part, there is a lift which takes you to the top of the Gopuram on the 18th floor, isn’t that exciting? The 360° view from the top is really breathtaking.

With the big Shiva statue at the back and the huge Arabian Sea in the background, the view couldn’t get any better.

Cost to go to the top of the Gopuram : ₹20

After enjoying the panoramic view from the top of the Gopuram, I headed to see the Shiva statue from close and also visited the temple underneath it.

It was such a calm and serene feeling visiting the Murdeshwar temple and no Gokarna trip can be complete without visiting this place.

Murdeshwar Temple Timings: 7 a.m – 1 p.m. & 3 p.m – 8:15 p.m.

Raaja Gopura Timings:  6 a.m.  – 8:15 p.m.

After spending a good two hours at this place, it was time to get back to Gokarna. But before that, it was time for lunch. I had a quick lunch at Kamat restaurant just outside Murdeshwar town and headed towards Mirjan Fort!

Stop by the historic Mirjan Fort

Mirjan Fort near Gokarna

Mirjan Fort is a historic fortress built in the 16th century by the rulers of the Vijaynagar Empire. You can see the great bastions, escape routes, and watch towers at the fort. It’s best to visit the fort during the monsoon or just after it, as it turns all green because of the overgrown grass on the walls of the fort.

It’s a great spot for history lovers, though they don’t let you take your cameras inside. I spent a good 30 minutes and then headed back to Gokarna.

Timings of the Mirjan Fort : 8 am – 5:30 pm

You can also visit Belekan Beach if you have time. Near the beach, there is also a Hanuman temple, which gives you a great view of the sea and the beach! One can also do the Gokarna beach trek starting from Belekan Beach!

Once I reached back at Zostel I spent the rest of the evening resting on the sunbeds and watching the sunset from there.

Visiting Mahaganapati Temple & Mahabaleshwar temple

After relaxing for a good time, I planned to visit the temples by walk as it is very close to Zostel. Start by visiting the Mahaganpati temple and then heading to the Mahabaleshwar temple, which is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva as well.

You will not be allowed to visit the temple if you are not wearing a dhoti. You can either rent or buy it from nearby shops. The same applies to girls, no short/revealing clothes are allowed inside the temple.

A little history about the temple is that it was built in the 4th century. According to mythology when Shiva gave Raavan the Aatma linga while on his way back to Lanka, he was not supposed to keep it down. Everyone was afraid if Raavan reached Lanka, he would be the strongest, thus Shiva made him drop the Aatma linga, and that place happened to be Gokarna.

Since he tried to lift the stone back and wasn’t able to do it, he named the stone/linga Mahabala, which translates to the strongest. Thus the temple got its name as the Mahabaleshwar temple.

Temple timings : 6 am – 12:30 pm & 5 pm – 8 pm – Everyday

The temples also serve Prasad Bhojana. I did try it on my first-ever trip to Gokarna and would definitely recommend it.

Prasad Timings : 12 pm – 2 pm & 7:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Having dinner at Zostel Cafe

Chicken Ghee Roast at Mantra Cafe in Gokarna

Once I got back from the temple, I was very hungry and decided to have food at the cafe in Zostel. The cafe has some amazing panoramic views and they serve delicious food. You definitely need to try the non-veg starters, though a little expensive but totally worth it.

It was nice to talk to fellow travelers after dinner and then go to bed as tomorrow was going to be another long day.

Day 3:  Walk to Kudle Beach

I woke up by 8 am and then headed to the town as I had to return the scooter. After returning I planned to have breakfast at Zostel. After a great breakfast watching the sea, I was ready for the famous Gokarna beach trek, which covers all the famous beaches of Gokarna. I checked out and kept my luggage in the waiting area.

Zostel to Kudle beach is just a 1km walk and takes 15-20mins. As soon as you start to descend to Kudle Beach, there is a small Hanuman temple there, which they say is also the birthplace of Lord Hanuman .  Not really sure if it’s this or Anegundi in Hampi.

Kudle Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Gokarna, which is covered with hills on both sides. It’s best to walk barefoot and traverse the long lengths of the beach!

You can either swim or enjoy the different water sports here. Since I wanted to experience all the beaches, I thought to try water sports later! Towards the end of Kudle Beach, you’ll find steps that lead you to the most famous beach of Gokarna,” Om Beach”.

Reaching the beautiful Om Beach

Om Beach from the viewpoint

It takes another 20-30mins to reach Om Beach from Kudle Beach. Once you have climbed the steps from Kudle Beach you’ll reach a road, instead of following the road climb the volcanic rocks and you’ll find the arrows on the ground pointing you to Om Beach.

The beach gets its name because it resembles the Hindu religious symbol “Om”. The shape can only be seen when you’re on the way from Om Beach towards Half Moon Beach.

As soon as you reach Om Beach on the left side you’ll see the famous Namaste Cafe . It’s best to have a quick lunch here, and then move towards the other beaches. The food at Namaste Cafe is pretty average, not sure why the hype. Maybe because the restaurant overlooks the sea!

After having a quick lunch, I moved towards Half Moon Beach. If you don’t want to hike, you can also take a boat from here directly to Paradise Beach. If you’re lucky, you’ll also be able to spot dolphins!

You can also swim at Om Beach, but be very careful as it has a sudden drop.

The sun was at the top, and I thought It was better to keep moving and rest after Half Moon Beach.

Gokarna Beach trek: Heading toward Half Moon Beach

Gokarna Beach trek

The route from Om Beach to Half Moon Beach is not an easy path, and at times you are walking with a drop of 60ft on your right side. It’s better to do this with other travelers as you might get lost and the path is not straightforward.

When you have just started from Om Beach, you’ll find a path near a restaurant going toward your right, which will lead you to Om Beach viewpoint . Make a stop there and see the Om Shape being formed by the beach.

It takes 30 to 40 minutes to reach Half Moon Beach from Om Beach.

The beach gets its name because of the crescent-shaped beach. It’s not really a big beach, but it’s nice to just relax in the water here.

You can also find a few shacks here providing snacks, I relaxed for some time and then started to Paradise Beach.

Is Paradise really found at Paradise Beach?

View of Paradise beach and Small Hell Beach

The path might not be clear after Half Moon Beach. You need to start from the back of the last shack. This is the toughest part of the Gokarna beach trek, but you have an amazing view of the Sea on the right. It takes close to 40 minutes to reach Paradise Beach. Before reaching Paradise Beach, you’ll find a small beach called the Small Hell Beach. This was my favorite beach a few years back, as I had camped here for three days.

Paradise Beach is just a few meters away, you’ll find a lot of smaller shops selling you chips and cold drinks here. When you reach Paradise Beach, you’ll also find a camping site. Yes – people come and camp here for a night!

Back in 2018, the beach was not known by many travelers and thus was very offbeat. Over the years with so much infrastructure being built, the beach has lost its charm. I swam for a while and rested near Small Hell Beach. Since it was already 4 p.m., I headed back to Kudle Beach to experience the sunset from there!

  • Sunset at Kudle Beach

Sunset at Kudle Beach

It took me close to two hours to reach back to Kudle Beach from Paradise Beach, and as soon as I reached Kudle Beach I dropped dead. There was barely any time for trying any water sports so I decided to watch the sunset by myself.

And don’t just leave after the sun has set. Wait for the magic to happen after that. I sat there thinking how amazing this trip had turned out to be. This was a power-packaged Gokarna trip where I got to experience so many amazing places!

Since my bus was at 9 p.m., I decided it was time to get back to Zostel and freshen up. Before heading back, I stopped at my favorite spot for dinner. Any guesses? By this time, you guys already know it’s Dattaprasad Tiffin Canteen, which doesn’t just serve breakfast but all the meals!

After that, I walked to the bus stop and took my bus back to Bangalore.

Road Trip from Bangalore to Gokarna:

If you are planning a road trip from Bangalore to Gokarna, you should be knowing about the road condition from Bangalore to Gokarna.

Bangalore to Haveri on AH 47 (320 Kms):

The distance of 320 Kms from Bangalore to Haveri can be covered in just 5.5 hours. The road is a proper highway at least two-lane on one side in minimum. However, there are not many Dhaba or roadside shops options after Chitradurga which is around 200 Kms from Bangalore.

As you will be driving on the highway, this is evident that you will have to pay the toll charges also. There will be around 600 rupees in toll charges from Bangalore to Haveri. After Haveri, you hit the state road and I do not think there are any toll charges from Haveri to Gokarna.

Haveri to Gokarna (180 Kms):

The distance of 180 km from Haveri to Gokarna takes around 4.5 hours via Sirsi including breaks. This route is usually single-lane two-way drive through reserve forest and jungle which are scenic during monsoon or post monsoon but dry during summer.

Planning your road trip from Bangalore to Gokarna: Tips

Try to leave Bangalore as early as possible. On the average, general cars take around 10 hours. If you start late in the midnight or post midnight, you will reach Gokarna in the noon or afternoon. Gokarna being a rocky terrain and a sea nearby gets humid and warm easily.

The best time to start would be around 8 or 9 PM on Friday. So, that you can reach Gokarna early morning. Another thing is, if you start late, by the time you reach Sirsi, it will be already morning. So, for the rest of the 180 Kms, you will have to drive through the day traffic.

Understand the Gokarna beaches:

There is a total of famous five beaches around Gokarna along the Arabian Sea. Those beaches are:

  • Gokarna beach
  • Kudle Beach
  • Half Moon beach and,
  • Paradise beach aka small Hell beach.

Gokarna Beach trail

Note: The walking trail given in the map above is wrong between Kudle to Om beach. You can actually directly walk from Kudle to Om beach through Gokarna Cliff. Once you reach the Kudle beach, the trail is pretty evident.

Gokarna Beaches Accessibility:

Gokarna bus stand, market, vegetable shops, local shops and cheap hotels are all located in the Gokarna town. Gokarna beach is the nearest beach from there. Just before entering the Gokarna town, there is a road-cut which takes you there to the Kudle beach and the Om beach.

That means you can drive directly to the Kudle beach or the Om beach if you have your own vehicle. In case, if you do not have your own vehicle, a tempo or auto or tuk-tuk can be hired in the Gokarna town (in case you arrive by bus) to drive you to the hotel or Kudle or the Om beach towards the south of the Gokarna beach.

Kudle beach is situated at a distance of around 4 Kms from the Gokarna town towards the south. Om beach is situated at a distance of around 7 Kms in the same route further.

Gokarna beach:

Gokarna beach is the nearest beach to the town. As a tourist, I would not recommend going to this beach. This beach is mainly crowded by the locals. If you want to relax there drinking beer, it might look little awkward among the locals.

Kudle beach:

Kudle beach is the beach next to Gokarna beach. I would say this one is the one of the most famous and populated beach among the Gokarna beaches where you can sit and relax in the restaurants and have a beer or just do sun-bathing. This beach is also clean and easy to relax.

There are some restaurants on the beaches which serve you drinks and food where you can sit and enjoy. This beach is little costlier than the Gokarna main town beach but affordable because of the choices of the restaurants.

Om beach is the beach next to Kudle beach. It is little expensive compared to Kudle beach and the most expensive among the all. There is only one famous restaurant on this beach beside one or two local restaurants. So, it depends on where are you staying. If you are going to stay near the Om beach, of course, restaurants near the Om beach are your best choices otherwise try to stick to the Kudle beach.

Half moon and paradise beach (Small hell beach):

There is almost nil option on these beaches as far as food, drinks or even water is concerned. But these beaches definitely worth a visit because they are not so crowded and you can relax there on the beach.

Best time to travel to Gokarna:

Monsoon is surely not the best time to travel to Gokarna as water becomes murky and beaches also smell. You also cannot see the sun and relax there because of the infrequent rain. The best time to visit Gokarna would be from January until March. Most of the foreigners also arrive during this season only.

Gokarna beach, Om beach, Kudle beach, paradise beach, half moon beach (17)

How to reach Gokarna?

Gokarna is almost 500 Kms from Bangalore so, I would prefer to go by train/ Private vehicle rather by bus.

Train from Bangalore to Gokarna road station:

Karwar Express (16523) leaves Bangalore city Junction @ 20;00 reaches Gokarna road station @ 13:19; frequency: everyday Sleeper chargees: 405 Third AC charges: 1100

Gokarna Beach Camping:

If you are carrying your own tent, you can pitch that at Paradise beach ( the only beach where camping is allowed). You can also camp at the Namaste cafe or some resorts allow you to camp if you are in a group. They would only provide you space. Rest you have to arrange yourself.

If you are opting for camping, make sure you carry everything with you including water and other needs as there are no shops or restaurants at the Paradise beach as it is secluded. During the monsoon, make sure you have a proper tent which does not fly off under the high winds.

Gokarna beach, Om beach, Kudle beach, paradise beach, half moon beach (15)

Staying Option in Gokarna:

There are a lot of staying options in Gokarna on the various beaches including Gokarna town, Gokarna beach, Kudle beach and Om beach. The cost varies from place to place and the location of your stay.

Staying in the Gokarna town or staying on the Gokarna beach is cheaper than staying near the Kudle beach. However, in terms of money, Om beach is the most expensive. If you want to find an affordable place to stay, go for the Kudle beach. Here is a Wikitravel article with details on staying option in Gokarna.

Gokarna beach trekking:

Gokarna Beach trekking starts from the Gokarna beach and ends on the paradise beach aka small hell beach as marked on the Google Maps. There is a straightforward trail from one to another beach. If you are going to use the Google GPS trail map, it won’t show you the correct trail from the Kudle beach to the Om beach.

If you feel too confused, just follow other people who are trekking or ask the local people. Everyone almost knows about the trail as well as the trail is pretty evident. Here is a nice article on the  detailed walking experience  from one to another beach.

I am somewhat of a newbie to blogging. So with that being said, I am very glad that I found this blog post. I’ve heard talk of Gokarna Beach Trek but never really knew what it was all about; however, I can say that I understand a lot better now. I plan to stay connected to your blog. Can’t wait to see what you’re going to write next. Thanks

I have done Kumta to Gokarna Beach Trek. Reading this blog has refreshed my memories. Very soon I will do it again. Thanks for this inspiring article. Check my blog which I wrote after my trek. https://www.trekwithnazir.com/kumta-to-gokarna-beach-trek/

Firstly thanks for the article was very informative. I understand the article is three years old hence I had a query. Was planning to go with my wife for camping..as u suggested is paradise beach still safe considering the human intervention?

' src=

hi amar i am planning for a weekend trip to gokara with 12 friends by end of this jan. as we checked for hotels most of them are booked, so we are planning to camp at paradise beach. is it safe to tent there ?

' src=

It is safe to camp on the beach.

' src=

Hey, Could use a little help. I’m planning to go with a friend, 2 of us, both guys. Mostly 22/12/17-26/12/17. We want to camp in our own tents as we are on a tight budget. Is Paradise Beach safe? Also, what about shower and toilet facilities? Can we go to some hotel/restaurant for that sole purpose?

' src=

we are planning to visit this place next week .. is this time ok for trekking there .. plz rply

' src=

I want to visit their as couples and want to stay in tent as we want to stay under the stars. We are reaching there on 30th Jan. I also found somewhere that we can stay in Middle beach in tent. I wanted to confirm if it is possible to stay in our own tent at this time and what are the things we should care about if we are staying in tent.

Hi Sandeep I would like to know your experience while camping in gokarna , as we are planning for a trip to gokarna jan 26, 2018.

' src=

If we get our own tents, where can we freshen up in gokarna? Do they have rentals on an hourly basis to freshen up an stuff..

The best way will be to go to a restaurant order for breakfast and get fresh there. I am not aware of any public toilets.

' src=

Me and 3 of my friends are planning a visit during New Year.Since the hotels are fully occupied, we have no choice other than to camp. Can you suggest any alternative accomodations(I tried in booking.com,yatra,go ibibo etc.. and no rooms are available during that time)

Try Airbnb or type hotels near Gokarna, Karnataka on the Google Maps in the search box

' src=

Really nice article.

You mentioned camping might trouble in seasons, I din’t get here – whether their local festive season because of religious place that police gets strict or tourism season where flocks comes in abundance and party (e.g. 31st December)?

People usually gets strict when tourists create nuisance like venturing inside the water in the night, or smoking weed etc. If you are mindful, you should be in trouble.

' src=

Hi there, I’ll be going to Gokarna on 5th december, and I’ll be reaching late, at maybe around 10, so trekking to Paradise beach might not be possible, where else can I camp in the night, that I can reach at that time? Or should i start late to reach maybe the next day?

10 in the night in December (a winter month) in Gokarna is really too late. All the shops and hotels will be mostly closed and there will be completely dark on the beaches. Also, To trek to Paradise beach for camping, you will have to trek. the first question is: Do you know the route? Are you alone? Will you have enough water and food for the night? what if it rains? Leave aside the wildlife encounters, if any or other unseen problems…

So, looking at the above factors, I will not advise you to do so at all. The second option sound much better. You reach there early, get fresh, start trekking to the paradise beach.

' src=

Hey bro..i goin to pitch my own tent..only concern is drinking water source…? is it available at paradise beach or i hv to carry water.

There is no water facility at the Paradise beach… You will have to carry it

' src=

Are you carrying your tent with you or got it on rent. We are also planning to come to Gokarna this weekend and planning to use tent for sleeping.

' src=

It’s a wonderful blog and I think I got almost everything I need! Thank you so much. I had an inquiry though. Is camping on paradise beach safe? And is it still allowed, ’cause I heard it’s not allowed anymore.

Officially its not allowed… But on the festive time/ weekend, try not to camp there…. however, duing off-season camping on paradise beach seeks no trouble…

Alright. Thank you so much!!!!! That was very helpful 🙂

I was planning to go on one of the weekends in September with two of my friejds. I’m guessing that should be okay since it’s off season?

Yeah, that’s right…. try to avoid weekends… and if police asks you pretend as if you do not know anything about it :P… Good luck

Hi Lissiue, I am visiting in one week. So I wanted to know if you were able to camp conveniently on your last visit. So that I can plan accordingly.

' src=

Me and few of my friends are planning to spend new year in gokarna We prefer tents pitched along the beach rather than stay in some hotels And a beer at hand while counting down for the next year seems to be a good idea So Which beach is the best for tents and for some booze during December31st ..New year time . Also do we get to rent tents there ?

You cannot rent tents there. According to what you are looking for I think Paradise beach should be perfect. Be reminded that during occasions like new year, police gets strict….

' src=

hie is there any new eyar party at gokarna where we can join a group?? we are 4 ppl willing to trvael. 2 guys and 2 gals..but the more the group is more fun..suggest me

yes… of course, you should join it….

' src=

I would like to know which is the cleanest and pleasant beach in gokarna. Where we could have hastle free night walks and have a laidback evening with beer.

Paradise beach……

' src=

Hi, its a very helpful Article, I am planning to visit Gokarna from 8th novemeber to 12 Novemeber 2015. I am planning to carry my own camp and wish to stay at Paradise Beach. Do you think around this time there will be any issue?

I don’t think there should an issue. Just be safe 🙂

Thank, I will be 🙂

' src=

hey bro i’m thinking of camping on paradise beach a week from now. what are the risks involved. i read on the wikitravel page that cops and forest officials frequent the area. i do not smoke charas or take any other hallucinogenic substance.

I think there should not be any risk involved because there are no festivals around and also, it’s not a peak season. However, The temperature might be very hot these days so, I would rather suggest you to take a look of the weather in Gokarna and around and then plan your camping. If at all everything suits you.

On an over all note, there should not be any problem

Thank you for this, sorry for the late reply. We did go camping and the 2nd night we were there it rained 😀 haha so it was pretty fun…thank you again 🙂

Hi Samuel, was it convenient to put tent there. Was there any kind of inconvenience or something to take care of if we are putting tent on the beach in Gokarna. Is there a specific beach which is the best place to stay in tent.

' src=

hie , you mentioned that Camping is allowed in Paradise beach , and also to be aware of local police thr while camping… is camping hastle free here ???

Hi Najumudheen,

People rarely go to paradise and police too… Since this is off season.. there should not be any problem… yeah its haslte free

' src=

Thank you so much for a detailed route plan. I plan to do this trek in Jan/Feb, have bookmarked this! 🙂

I wish you surely would enjoy there 🙂

road trip bangalore to gokarna

A Drive Through Coastal Heaven: Mangalore - Gokarna

Photo of himanshu jha

“I want to go on a road trip. Just you and me. The highway, The Radio, The Blue Sky, The Back Roads, and windows down. We’ll talk about everything and nothing. We‘ll sing our hearts out and we’ll make memories we’ll never forget. Just you and me.”

Last August, I had planned a road trip from Mangalore to Gokarna with my friends, unfortunately, that got canceled due to heavy rainfall and I ended up going there next month with my girlfriend. We started our trip from Bangalore.

There are multiple ways to reach Mangalore. You can take a flight, train or bus. Mangalore has connectivity to almost all the major cities in India. For people living in Bangalore taking a bus is also a good option. You can also plan a scenic road trip starting from Bangalore amidst the Western Ghats.

We took the Karwar express from Bangalore to Mangalore which runs on alternate days. The timings of this train are very easy for people living in Bangalore, it departs at around 7 PM and reaches Mangalore early in the morning. After reaching Mangalore, we took a self-drive car (Zoomcar) and went for a great breakfast at Ocean Pearl, a bit expensive but was worth it.

Our first destination was Udupi, which is a 2-hour drive from Mangalore. Instead of taking the highway we decided on hitting the Fisheries Road which turned out to be the best decision of our trip. Driving so close to the sea, in between the little huts, you can witness the rich culture of these fishermen and their families. Enroute - You will get to witness scenic beaches like Pithrody and Kappu beach(lighthouse beach). There are a lot of options to stay in Udupi but we decided to stay in Malpe which is one of the most famous beaches in India. There are very few options to stay in Malpe so you can also stay at Manipal which is around 20-30 km from Malpe, a lot of options are available there. After relaxing in the afternoon, we went to the beach to enjoy the sunset. We took a stroll on the Sea Walk there, it is one of the rare things in India. Backwaters on one side and sea on the other, the cool sea breeze and the setting sun make it a perfect romantic evening.

After this we decided to explore seafood in Malpe. There are lots of stalls by the road selling a variety of lip-smacking dishes, pomfret fry, prawn chilli e.t.c, easy on the pocket too. After enjoying the local delicacies we headed back to the beach for the serenity and the sound of the waves.

We started early in the morning for Gokarna, Murdeshwar was our first stop. Murdeshwar is famous for the world’s second-tallest Shiva statue. The view from the temple is mesmerizing and very soothing. There are a lot of options to stay and eat here. One can have a one day halt here also if planning for a long trip. We had lunch by the sea at one of the restaurants in the temple premises, after which we started towards Gokarna. There is one hidden gem en route Gokarna, just 15 km before it - Mirjan Fort. This is a deserted fort in the middle of the forest. Time has covered it with green moss making it picturesque. The fort is not known to many and hence less crowded, so you can explore it in peace.

After visiting the fort we headed to Gokarna, We stayed at Zostel which has many options ranging from Dorms to Cottages. It is situated at the top of a cliff with the sea on one side and the view is spectacular from the Zostel Cafe aka Mantra cafe. After taking a power nap and relieving the tiredness we headed for the Paradise beach to enjoy the sunset. Most of the beaches in Gokarna are rocky beaches and you will get to see various rock formations all over. After chasing the waves away at the beaches we headed back to Zostel and spent the rest of the evening at Mantra Cafe with groovy songs playing in the background. By late evening we could hear the roaring of the waves, star gazed sky, and a lot of crickets buzzing. Far away from the horns and sirens, it was nature talking to us.

We started our day by visiting Mahabaleshwar Temple, for which Gokarna has been famous among its Hindu devotees. The temple is situated near the Main Beach, and its lane is crowded with souvenir shops.

It being the last day of our trip, we had to head back to Mangalore to board our train. You can take the same train (Karwar Express) for coming back to Bangalore. We started our journey back to Mangalore, this time we took the Highway to reach in time. Roads are in pretty good condition. We stopped for lunch again at Murudeshwar as visiting it once was not enough for us. After lunch we continued our journey to Mangalore and reached there by 4 in the evening.

We went straight to Mangalore Port and Panambur beach which are a must visit when in Mangalore. Panambur beach is like the Juhu beach, a delight for both the locals and tourists. It has a lot of eateries where we enjoyed a plate of Pav Bhaji and Bhel Puri. At last, It was time for us to return home. We dropped our self drive car and took a cab to the railway station. We were back in Banaglore the next morning.

Note - There are 2 stations in Mangalore so confirm beforehand where you have to go one - Mangalore Junction and the other is Mangalore Central.

Places to eat - Must try: Mantra Cafe(Gokarna), RNS cafe(Murdeshwar), Thimmappa Fish Hotel(Udupi), Ocean Pearl(Mangalore)

road trip bangalore to gokarna

25 Jan 2022

The drive to Gokarna is filled with fun and frolic. Travelling over the weekend to let your hair down to relax is the best way to unwind and release the tension. Plus, small getaways are genuinely helpful to get out of the city and its hustle bustle. Sequestered spots with scenic beauty rejuvenate the soul.

The town of Gokarna located by the Arabian Sea is situated on the southwestern side of Karnataka. This is a popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus. People come here to gain the blessing of the mighty Shiva. The renowned Mahabaleshwar Temple is home to a shrine dedicated to the deity Lord Shiva. Another temple, the Koti Teertha is known as a temple tank for devotees to step down in the holy waters, and bathe to cleanse their sins and seek a new beginning in life.

Gokarna is a destination with gorgeous virgin beaches. Its mesmerising palm lined Gokarna beach, Om and Kudle beaches are located not too far away from each other. There is also the Half Moon Beach, the Small Hell Beach and a few more exciting places to visit in this small town. The beaches here are known for their idyllic white sand and pristine blue waters.

Best Time To Visit

Gokarna is an excellent destination for a weekend getaway and is at its best during the monsoon season. It usually starts from June right through to August post which the weather becomes hot, dry and sunny. An alternative time to visit Gokarna is between October and March when the weather turns warm and pleasant, and temperatures touch 32 degrees Celsius during the day.

There are a number of water sports in Gokarna that will satisfy the soul of adventure seekers. It is a favourite vacation spot for travellers who travel here looking for a peaceful weekend. It is also a laid back and less commercialised version of Goa.

There are three ways to reach Gokarna from Bangalore. And all three are amazingly scenic roads to drive through.

Route 2 co-joins with Route 1. Route 1 takes approximately 8 hours and 50 minutes to reach Gokarna. The journey is about 479 kilometres from Bangalore and the drive is spectacular. Route 2 takes roughly 9 hours and 26 minutes to Gokarna and the journey is approximately 513 kilometres in distance. Route 3 is also about 9 hours and 35 minutes from Bangalore to Gokarna, and it is 513 kilometres long.

What To Eat And Stopovers

On the way to Gokarna, some of the eateries and restaurants serve some delicious south Indian food. The spices and flavours are incredible when one begins the meals and lingers on the taste buds until you return again to try them out. That's the secret to the cuisine served in these small but amazingly cool highway restaurants and eateries.

  • Lakshmi Bhavan Tiffin Room: This is a must visit eatery in Chitradurga. The restaurant serves Indian, Asian styles cuisine. They have a vegetarian and vegan friendly menu too. This may be a relatively small place but is quite popular among the local residents. The dosas served during breakfast are simply delicious. It is known to be one of the best hotels to try out the masala dosa as well.
  • Reddy Military Hotel: Their loyal customers simply rave about this small but well-kept restaurant. Their food is simply superb. In reality, when you reach, the restaurant does not have a military feel to it in any way and gives out more family oriented vibe instead. Their mutton chops, mutton fry, kheema, natti chicken, rice and chapathy are some of their most in-demand and frequently ordered dishes.
  • Swathi Delicacy: This restaurant serves Indian, Asian, and also vegetarian dishes across breakfast, lunch, dinner, brunch. This restaurant is located just off the highway. The food here is delicious. Must try dishes on the list are the south Indian idli vada, poori, pulao.
  • Vilasi Delight: They serve Indian and Asian food and is so popular with travellers that there is always a queue or you need to reserve a table in advance. One of the best vegetarian eateries on the highway in Tumkur, the food prices are affordable, with superb ambience making it the ideal choice for groups and families.
  • Kamat Upachar: This restaurant is popular among travellers. Their menu is Indian heavy but they also offer vegan options along with a special vegetarian menu. They are open for three meals - breakfast, brunch, lunch. Their plantain leaf lunch with jowari roti is a favourite among customers, which comes with delicious side dishes with a variety of South Indian flavours.

Reaching There And Places To Visit

Gokarna is filled with temples, beaches, fun in the sun and water sports. If you fancy a lonely walk on these virgin beaches, then this is definitely the place to be. The temples are some of the best destinations that you can choose within the country to pray, meditate, connect with your inner soul or just simply relax. Here are some of the places that you must visit in Gokarna:

  • Om Beach: This is a trendy beach for its shape which is like the OM famous sign among Hindus. People also visit here because it is a serene and gorgeous place to relax. Walking in the sand and enjoying the tranquil beaches calm people and refresh the energy.
  • Mahabaleshwar Temple, Gokarna: This is in Gokarna, and it is a Hindu temple located in Gokarna, many people travel to this religious pilgrimage centre in Karnataka.
  • Half Moon Beach: This beach earns its name for its shape as well. It is difficult to access the Half Moon Beach via the roads, so to reach the beach, one has to hike or use a motorboat from Om beach. Alternatively, take a walk towards Dolphin Cafe at the southern end of Om beach. Later, you can follow the signboard pointing in the direction of the Half-moon beach.
  • Kudle Beach Road: Visiting this beach is going to make you fall in love with it instantly. The waves here are softer than most Indian beaches where the waves are aggressive. It is ideal for children to play in the sea. The sand is soft and perfect to build some sandcastles. Kudle beach isn't as exposed as Om beach. Therefore, less crowd ensures a cleaner beach. The beach also has a couple of quaint beachside restaurants where you can grab a bite before jumping into the sea.
  • Paradise Beach : This beach is genuinely a paradise being almost entirely cut off from the mainstream. Paradise beach is a treat to one's senses. If in Gokarna, this is not to be missed at any cost. Paradise beach can be accessed by trekkers through the Kudle beach, which is the most used route. You can also hire a bike to ride till Belekan beach through the picturesque Belekan village and catch a glimpse of the local life here. Belekan beach takes one through a short 20 minutes hike to this secluded paradise beach. Stay back and watch the sunset or the sunrise and experience pure joy.
  • Maha Ganapathi Temple: Visit the Mahaganpati temple before the Mahabaleshwar temple as the legend goes that one needs to visit here before they go to the revered Shiv temple. The history of this temple is unique, and people are always intrigued to see the idol which is in a standing position and it is black in colour. One can also see the high bump in the idol’s head.

Gokarna is a destination with gorgeous virgin beaches.  The beaches here are known for their idyllic white sand and pristine blue waters.

How to reach Gokarna from Bangalore

Gokarna is a small town located on the southwestern coast of Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka and an hour south of the Goa border by train. It is one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage centers in India.

It’s quite easy to reach Gokarna from any part of the world. Gokarna is about 450 kilometers from Bengaluru, 238 km from Mangalore, about 59 km from Karwar, 866 km from Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and 525 km from Kerala. Gokarna can be reached in various ways, such as by plane, train, car, bus, or bike. It would become an awesome trip for bike riders since the travel includes curvy roads, hills, highways, etc.

How to reach Gokarna from Bangalore

This article will help you know how to reach Gokarna from Bangalore and plan your trip.

By Roadway:

There are several buses that run from Bangalore to Gokarna at affordable prices. It takes about 9–11 hours to reach the place. There are many state government and private bus services available from Bengaluru to Gokarna, as well as from other places in India.

Sugama Travels, Vijayanand Roadlines (VRL), Sea-Bird, Seabird Tourists, Spd Travels, and SRS Travels are a few private buses that provide night journeys as well as a countable day journey from Bengaluru, and the ticket fare ranges from 600 to 1500 bucks depending on the season and availability of the seats.

I would for sure say that our bus journey was not a very enjoyable experience since the overnight journey was horrible due to the bus condition. I suggest you prefer buses once after surfing about the bus ratings on Google/other booking apps.

And, if you are visiting Goa first and then traveling to Gokarna, it’s just a 1–1.30-hour journey by train & a 5–5.45-hour journey by bus to reach Gokarna. Bus services are available from most of the cities in India. One thing you want to do is dive into Google and search for the available services in your region.

The nearest Airports Dabolim Airport is approximately 106.2 km away from Gokarna. Other nearby airports are.

  • Hubli, 123 km away
  • Belgaum, 150 km away
  • Mangalore International Airport is 187.4 km away from Gokarna.

The flight rate ranges from 2.2k to 7k, depending on the days of the week and peak seasons. I suggest you plan your travel dates accordingly. After reaching the airport, you can reach Gokarna either by train, bus, or cab, as per your convenience.

By Railway:

If you are traveling by train, pre-booking the tickets is a better option than booking at the last minute. IRCTC gateway provides the available trains from Bangalore to Gokarna

The very nearest railway station is Gokarna Road, 6 km from the town, and you can reach the Gokarna beach from there by cab or auto, which takes 20 minutes to reach the place. The KSR Bengaluru Karwar Express, Matsyagandha Express, Poorna Express, Marusagar Express, and Mangalore Local are the daily local trains available.

The train ticket fare starts from Rs 250 to Rs 2k, according to the classes you choose.

The other nearest railway station is Ankola, which is about 20–25 km from the town. A few other nearby railway stations are Kumta Railway Station (32.8 km), Honnavar Railway Station (47.8 km), and Karwar Railway Station (74 km).

Once you reach the station, you can take either a bus (private or government) or a cab to reach Gokarna.

Bangalore Goa Road Trip (via Jog Falls, Bhatkal, Murudeshwar, Gokarna)

By ankit rajpoot | march 5, 2018 | comments 5 comments.

In January of 2018, I and wifey finally set out on our Goa Trip. We’ve been wanting to visit Goa for the past 5 years but the plan never came about. But this time, we finally decided that we’d visit Goa and do so on a road trip. Yay! So, here it goes the planning and execution of our Bangalore Goa Road Trip.

Palolem Beach, South Goa - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

We finalized the itinerary in November 2017 and made our hotel bookings. Since this was our longest road trip to date, and I am the only driver among the 2 of us, we decided to have a night-halt on the onward journey. So, our final itinerary looked something like this:

Day 1 – 26th-Jan : Bangalore to Bhatkal (En-route visit Jog falls) Day 2 – 27th-Jan : Bhatkal to Vagator (North Goa) (En-route visit Murudeshwar, Gokarna) Day 3 – 28th-Jan : Spend the day at Vagator, Baga, and head to Palolem (South Goa) in the evening. Day 4 – 29th-Jan : Spend the day at Palolem just relaxing at the resort or explore the nearby area on foot. Day 5 – 30th-Jan : Start back from Palolem in the morning and reach Bangalore before 6 PM.

While planning the trip, we wanted our night halt on the onward journey to be around midway between Bangalore and Goa. That’s not how it turned out though as we couldn’t decide on such a place and finally settled for Bhatkal. There was no particular reason to choose Bhatkal except that it was on the coast and fit in with the overall theme of our trip which was sea, beaches, and the beautiful Konkan region.

The day before the trip: I had planned to get everything ready well before the trip, but as usual, there were multiple things pending on my list on the night before the drive. The most important was to get the car ready. So, on the evening of 25th Jan, I popped the hood open and checked all the fluids and belts. And then took her out to get the tank topped up. Filled her up and got the air pressure checked in all four tires and the spare. As it turned out, the front left tire had a leak. I got the tire fixed and headed back home. Once home, I checked all the documents in the car and packed some essential things like snacks, charger, water bottles etc.

By the way, if you like road-tripping then do invest in a few emergency accessories for your car: A tubeless puncture repair kit and an air pump is a must for long trips. Also, learn to swap the tyre. Knowing the jacking points in your car and learning how to swap the tyre will go a long way in assuring a safe and convenient trip.

We had decided to leave early the next day as it was a 3-day weekend and we wanted to avoid the usual rush of Bangaloreans trying to get out of the city. We planned to leave between 04:30 and 5 AM, set the alarms and went to sleep. I follow a very strict policy of driving only during the day, thanks to the moronic drivers who are always on high beam with their fog-lamps on.

Day 1 (Bangalore to Bhatkal via Jog Falls): I had trouble falling asleep just like I always have before a trip. Needless to say, we were late the next day. Got up at 5 AM and got ready hastily, loaded the bags into the car and started our long journey. By now it was 05:45 AM and sunlight had crept up. We knew this meant long queues at the toll booths on our way out of Bangalore.

"<yoastmark

We were starting from Electronic City and took the Nice Ring Road towards the Tumakuru highway. As expected, we were hit by heavy traffic going out of Bangalore on the Tumakuru highway toll. The queue of vehicles was about 2KM long, but it wasn’t due to the toll itself. There was an upturned lorry at a bend just before the toll booth, which was causing the bottleneck. Luckily, we found a small side road that bypassed the bend and we joined the main road just before the toll booth. Beyond that point, the roads opened up and the traffic was behind us and we were off. Some pictures:

Nice, Smooth, Empty Roads - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

We stopped for breakfast at around 08:40 AM at a place called Hotel Sai Palace  about 172 KM into our trip. It’s a decent place, however, due to the long weekend, it was super crowded and finding a seat or getting service was an arduous task. Didn’t take many pictures here.

ODO Reading at Breakfast - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

Finally, after spending 45 minutes where we had planned to finish in 20 minutes, we started again. The roads again, were very welcoming with only occasional traffic and smooth tarmac, with lovely views of green fields, ponds, and small hills all around us.

Rice Fields - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

We continued on towards our next destination, which was Jog Falls. We traveled on the NH (Mumbai Highway) for another 4 hours and about 210 KMs, till Haveri , at which point, it was time to get off the NH and take on the slower State Highway to cross the ghat section. We decided to take this route towards Jog Falls. Right after getting off the NH, we stopped for a short break in a village and had fresh coconut water. It was refreshing. We also found a fuel station in the village and decided to tank up, given that the fuel gauge was below the 30% mark and we did not know if we’d find another fuel station for the next 200KM or so.

The ODO read:

397.3KM at 1:09PM - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

Started again after the fuel top-up. Beyond this point, as expected, our average speed went down drastically. The roads were alright, but there were just too many villages en-route and that meant a lot of speed bumps. So, we had to slow down quite often. We had also made the grave mistake of not stopping for lunch before getting off the NH. The SH stretch between Haveri-Jog Falls does not have any decent places to eat, at least none that I could spot from the car. Thankfully, we had packed a lot of snacks and water for exactly this situation and it proved very useful.

Given the time of the year, we didn’t have high hopes of finding any water in the falls. We finally reached Jog Falls around 03:40 PM and as expected, it was completely dry save for a few small streams. By this time, we were very hungry and were desperately looking for a proper meal. Thankfully, Jog falls being a tourist spot, we found this ( Prakruthi Yatri Nivas ) restaurant near the viewpoint and decided to have lunch there. The place was nearly empty. The service was quick and the food tasty. After hours of munching on potato chips and sweet cake, it was nice to have a proper meal.

Prakruthi Yatri Nivas restaurant and lodge near Jog Falls viewpoint. - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

We started our journey again after spending some time in the restaurant’s backyard at 04:30 PM. We took this route  towards our hotel The Royal Oak, Bhatkal as suggested by Google Maps. The route was very scenic as we passed through the Sharavati Valley Wildlife Sanctuary during the golden hour. At the same time, I was a little bit worried as the sun was setting and the thick jungle was already bringing in an early dusk. There was no traffic at all on this stretch of the road and it felt pretty spooky at times with all its twists and turns and not a single soul in sight. Still, we were not able to pick up speed as the road was very narrow and had a lot of blind curves.

Well, after about 2 hours of driving through the forest area, we finally arrived at Bhatkal. The hotel has a prominent building bang on Bhatkal Circle and we had no trouble finding it. They don’t seem to have covered parking available and we were asked to park in the open parking space available right in front of the hotel building.

The clock showed 06:40 PM and we had finally arrived at our final destination for the day after exactly 13 hours on the road. What a relief. We were tired and I was hungry. So we freshened up and ordered some tea and snacks and went straight to sleep by 8.30.

Our room at The Royal Oak, Bhatkal - Bangalore Goa Road Trip

Day’s Summary: Total Distance Travelled: 535KM Total Time Taken: 13 hours

The next day was gonna be less taxing as we only had about 250KM of driving to do. Or so we thought.

Sounds interesting! Keep posting

I can see your point. Fixed it. 🙂

Thumbs up for the post.Really liked the details you have given. But "the moronic indian drivers" was kind of a derogatory statement.Considering the fact you yourself are Indian, are you?I agree that most people might not be following the rule or are ignorant of the fact what damage high beams can cause to other drivers by nearly blinding them. But then there are plenty who do follow the rule and are courteous enough. That statement somehow stuck with me throughout the post.

Distance between Bangalore and Gokarna

Driving non-stop from bangalore to gokarna.

How far is Gokarna from Bangalore? Here's the quick answer if you don't sleep at all, or you have a friend with you so each person can drive some of the way, letting you make the entire trip by car without stopping.

Nonstop drive: 302 miles or 486 km

Driving time: 8 hours, 51 minutes

This is a pretty long drive, so it's not very realistic to drive nonstop. To get a better idea of how long this road trip would really be, scroll down to calculate how many hours it would take if you drive with stops .

Flying non-stop from Bangalore to Gokarna

Now let's assume you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line between Bangalore, India and Gokarna, India. Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula.

Flight distance: 245 miles or 395 km

Flight time: 59 minutes

The straight line flight distance is 57 miles less than driving on roads, which means the driving distance is roughly 1.2x of the flight distance.

Your plane flies much faster than a car, so the flight time is about 1/9th of the time it would take to drive.

This is a relatively short flight in a private plane, but you might be planning to book a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. Scroll down to see a more realistic calculation that takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

Bangalore to Gokarna road trip

Let's say you're actually planning a road trip to Gokarna, and you want to stop along the way to rest. If it's a real road trip, you might want to check out interesting stops along the way, eat at great restaurants, and maybe even find a hotel to stay overnight. That's what Trippy is perfect for, helping you figure out travel plans in detail.

Based on the length of this trip, we think you could spread out this fun road trip over more than one day.

Road trip: 2 days of driving

With the full itinerary planned out, we can estimate your total travel time for this trip.

Travel time: 9 hours on the road with 1 overnight

Start in Bangalore .

Drive for about 1.5 hours , then stop at Shankara Mutt and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 2.5 hours then stop in Chitradurga . Stay overnight. The next day, drive for about 2 hours , then stop in Ranebennur and stay for about 1 hour. Next, drive for another 2 hours then stop at Siddivinayaka temple Goli and stay for 1 hour. Finally, drive for about 1 hour and arrive in Gokarna .

Bangalore to Gokarna airports and flights

In the quick calculation above, we assumed you had a private plane and just wanted to know the time in the air from city to city. But for most of us, we're going to be flying on a commercial airline (whether it's first class or coach). So that means we really need to account for all the extra travel time getting to the airport, waiting for our flight, and making it to the destination.

To give you a better estimate of real-life travel, we've put together a flight itinerary with actual airports. Eventually you'll be able to customize this plan, choosing your own airports and flights. But for now, here's an example we've selected to give you an idea of how traveling might work between airports.

Departure airport: Bengaluru International Airport (BLR)

Arrival airport: Dabolim Airport (GOI)

With the airports selected, we can estimate the travel time to and from the airport, based on how far the airport is from downtown.

Getting to the airport: 52 minutes

Getting to your destination: 198 minutes

Now finally, let's look at an actual flight from BLR to GOI on Air India and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

Commercial flight time: 59 minutes

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from Bangalore to Gokarna including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 7 hours
