Before we dive into exploring the best USA road trips, there are a few tips to be aware of–especially if you’re visiting as an international tourist and haven’t explored the United States before!

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your United States road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits.

Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

Read the rental requirements carefully.

Especially make sure you know how many miles you’ve been allotted (or ideally, if they’re unlimited), if you need to return the car empty or full of fuel, what to do if the car breaks down, and what damages you’re liable for in the event of an accident.

On the off chance that you’re planning on continuing your road trip into Canada or Mexico , be sure to check any requirements for crossing the border as well.

Book travel insurance.

We don’t ever suggest traveling without travel insurance–anything can happen on the road, and an epic road trip is definitely a case of better safe than sorry.

Don’t underestimate how sparsely populated parts of the USA are.

If this is your first time visiting the USA, you may be surprised to see just how long you can drive in the United States without coming across a town or even a gas station–especially out west.

Be sure to keep an eye on your directions, and fill up your gas tank before heading into any particularly unpopulated areas!

Make sure you pack the right gear.

From safety gear to snacks, a big USA road trip requires bringing the right tools along, whether you’re taking a short vacation, diving into van life , or somewhere in between.

Route 66 is the quintessential American road trip, inspiring songs, movies, and novels.

Starting in Chicago and ending in Santa Monica, Route 66 passes through nine states: Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California.

Some of the best things to do on the route are enjoying the kitschy 1950s motels, gas stations, and restaurants that harken back to the days of the Great American Road Trip.

You’ll also find tons of quirky roadside attractions like the Catoosa Whale, Cadillac Ranch , and the Twin Arrows that are must-sees.

If you want to enjoy some nature along the way, you can visit the Grand Canyon or Petrified Forrest National Park.

The most typical way to explore Route 66 is to start in Chicago and drive all the way to Santa Monica, but there are many who drive smaller portions of it or go from west-to-east instead of east-to-west.

There’s no single “right” way to make the drive. Just make sure you enjoy yourself as you go!

Recommended Road Trip Length

Because the route is so long and there’s so much to see, it’s recommended you spend two weeks exploring it one way.

New York to Los Angeles

Driving across the United States from New York to Los Angeles is one of those classic American road trip routes that, quite honestly, is not suited to most USA vacations–you’ll be looking at a lot  of cornfields and open plains along the way and spend many days on the road.

… But that being said, the legend and myth of this USA road trip route endure because it does make for quite the adventure!

With nearly 3,000 miles of driving to do between NYC and LA, you have extreme flexibility to create your own USA road trip itinerary!

However, the most direct route (a mere 44 hours of drive time, not including stops and traffic!) will take you to Chicago, across the open fields of Iowa and Nebraska, through some stunning nature in Colorado and Utah, and right through Las Vegas before delivering you to the beauty of the Pacific Ocean.

If you’re open to detours, plenty of national parks will be within your reach on this USA road trip, including Rocky Mountain National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Zion National Park, and even the Grand Canyon!

If you’d like to enjoy a coast-to-coast road trip in the USA, we recommend setting aside at least two weeks to ensure you have enough time to experience the route along the way (and avoid spending too many days at a time looking at nothing but highways)!

Blue Ridge Parkway

If you’re exploring the western parts of North Carolina or Virginia , the Blue Ridge Parkway is always lingering somewhere nearby.

It’s the most popular road trip between the two states and connects two of the United States’ most-visited national parks, Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Shenandoah National Park.

At 469 miles in length, this road will take some time to explore !

Narrowing things down to a few places you must visit is tough, but here are some “musts.” 

Moving north to south, highlights on the Virginia side include Humpback Rocks (Milepost 5), Mabry Mill (MP 176), Peaks of Otter (MP 85), and the Blue Ridge Music Center (MP 213).

Across the border in North Carolina, you at least need to see Linville Falls (316), Craggy Gardens (MP 364), Graveyard Fields (418), and Oconoluftee (MP 469) at the end of the line.

Of course, there are more spots scattered throughout that are within a short drive of the Parkway , such as the ever-popular Asheville, NC , the Biltmore Estate , and more charming mountain towns than you can count.

That, along with its length, is why this is one USA road trip that will take some time, if ever, for you to complete. 

Please note that some areas of the Blue Ridge Parkway close during winter through parts of spring. The NPS is pretty good about keeping information up to date on their website .

While you can drive the Blue Ridge Parkway in less time, ideally, if you want to hike and explore along the route, a week is a great starting point for this USA road trip route.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Who doesn’t love a nice glass of bourbon?

On the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, you tour 18 different distilleries, try multiple bourbons (and other treats) at each, and take in tons of bottled-up history throughout the gorgeous Bluegrass State. 

While there is no official route for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, stay in either Lexington or Louisville as a “home base” for the experience, as all of the distilleries are within a few hours’ drive of these cities (some are mere minutes!).

Each day, pick 4-5 distilleries to visit, starting when they open in the morning and touring until they close.

Try to do the distilleries that are closest together on the same days (less driving and easier to get from one place to another).

If you’re a serious drinker, there are some bus tours that will chauffeur you throughout the Trail!

You’re never given more than about 2 ounces of alcohol at each distillery, but you may want a designated driver just in case.

On the drive between distilleries, you’ll see the rolling hills of Kentucky, some of our famous horse farms, and, of course, rick houses holding millions of gallons of the delicious spirit. 

In order to visit all of the distilleries, I recommend spending 4-6 days on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Southeast Coastal Road Trip

The stretch of coastline running from St. Augustine, Florida to the Outer Banks of North Carolina is packed with beautiful sights, historic cities, and laid-back beach towns.

We consider this area one of our personal favorites for road trips in the USA, and we’ve taken dozens of road trips in the region!

Start in St. Augustine, founded in 1565 by Spanish settlers and one of the most historic cities in the USA.

Explore its beautiful Castillo de San Marcos, check out the Fountain of Youth, relax on the beach, and explore the Colonial Quarter.

From there, head north to Savannah , where you can enjoy its incredible architecture and town squares, and then move on to Charleston , where you’ll find compelling American history and the lovely Folley Beach.

As you move up the coast, consider detouring for brief stops in Beaufort, South Carolina and/or Hilton Head Island, before heading into North Carolina.

Historic Wilmington and New Bern are always worth a look as you pass by, and while you’ll need to head all the way up to Kitty Hawk and Nag’s Head to experience the classic Outer Banks destinations, the Crystal Coast ( Emerald Isle , Morehead City, Beaufort , Atlantic Beach , etc.) has been my family’s haunt for generations and is also well worth experiencing.

And, the Crystal Coast also happens to be closer geographically to the rest of the stops on this United States road trip itinerary!

Want to continue north to the Outer Banks?

Ocracoke Island, Nags Head, Duck, Kitty Hawk (famously home to the Wright Brothers’ first-ever flight!) and more are all ready to welcome you.

We recommend spending about 10 days enjoying this USA road trip route.

Orlando to New Orleans Road Trip

Driving from Orlando to New Orleans  gives you plenty of options for stops along the way as well as enough to fill up an entire vacation at the starting point and ending point of the road trip.

From natural springs to beaches to caverns, there is plenty to see along this route to break up the trip.

Orlando is of course known for its iconic theme parks including Disney and Universal Studios.

However, Orlando and Florida also offer plenty of natural highlights including the natural springs.

On the way from Orlando to New Orleans , stop at Rainbow Springs, Silver Springs, or Ginnie Springs along I-75.

Once you get onto I-10, make sure to stop at Florida Caverns State Park for a unique Florida experience.

Plus, if you are taking this trip in the summer, you’ll appreciate the cooler air in the caverns!

Along I-10, there are also plenty of opportunities to stop for some time at the beach.

Consider Pensacola, Florida, or the Gulf Shores, Alabama, or any of Mississippi’s beaches to avoid a long drive off the main road.

From there you are in New Orleans where you can enjoy the bayou, lots of amazing food and live music, and plenty of history and beautiful architecture in the various districts within the city.

The length of this road trip depends on a few factors including how long you want to spend in Orlando and New Orleans.

The drive itself only takes about 9 hours, but if you want to spend time at the springs, beaches, and caverns, stretch it out to a 2 or 3 day drive, with a few days on either end to explore Orlando and New Orleans.

Washington State

With rugged driftwood-strewn beaches, snowcapped peaks, small towns, and major cities, Washington State is a true gem.

Home to incredibly diverse landscapes and endless adventures to be had, this Pacific Northwest destination is one of the best places to take a road trip in the United States. 

Start by  exploring Seattle (if you have the time) because there is plenty to do in this PNW hub. But when you’re ready to get out of the city, head straight to the Olympic Peninsula .

With temperate rainforests, waterfalls, remote beaches, and a towering mountain range, Olympic National Park is arguably the most diverse swath of land in the state, if not one of the most unique places in the country, and is the perfect place to try out some hikes in Washington .

Another drive well worth your while is to head northeast toward the iconic Mount Baker.

If you have the time, continue north to Highway 20 which brings you into the breathtaking North Cascades National Park.

Make photo stops along the way (like at the spectacularly beautiful turquoise waters of Lake Diablo), set off on epic hikes, and refuel at the small towns along the way.

Eventually, you’ll reach Lake Chelan , which is a perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer day.

From Lake Chelan, you have a stunning drive on Highway 2 back to Seattle with many more opportunities for exploring small towns and hiking along the way, if time allows. 

If you want to cover this whole route, you should allow 1.5 – 2 weeks. If you have less time, shorten your USA road trip itinerary accordingly.

Southwest Colorado Road Trip

Exploring Southwest Colorado on a memorable summer road trip through the mountains offers adventure in every direction.

Sand-sled through Great Sand Dunes National Park, drive breath-taking mountain passes, soak and swim in hot springs, and climb ladders to ancient Puebloan dwellings at Mesa Verde National Park.

From there, imagine taking a jeep ride to old mining towns, biking along scenic trails, and hiking among wildflowers.

Arrive in Telluride in style via a free gondola, go whitewater rafting or alpine sliding, sleep under the stars, and top it all off with local burgers and cold brews.

In other words: whatever kind of outdoor adventure you’re looking for, southwest Colorado has you covered.

A Southwest Colorado road trip highlights diverse outdoor fun in Great Sand Dunes National Park, Pagosa Springs, Durango, Mesa Verde National Park, Telluride, Ridgway, Ouray, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Crested Butte, and Buena Vista.

Choose from tent camping, cabins, or hotels, or a mixture thereof, for lodging along the way.

Allow at least nine to ten days for this epic southwest Colorado Road Trip , starting from Colorado Springs.

If you prefer slower travel and lots of outdoor adventure, consider making it a fourteen-day loop by staying longer in Ouray, Crested Butte, and Buena Vista — and really delve into these sweet mountain towns . 

Utah’s Mighty Five

Utah is home to five amazing national parks, all close enough to each other to visit on one iconic national parks road trip .

These national parks are Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, and Zion. Since they’re all in the southern half of the state, you can drive in a loop to get to them all.

This also works well as part of a bigger  southwestern US road trip .

If you’re short on time or not in great shape, you can see a lot by driving or taking park shuttles, where available.

Hop out at designated parking lots, lookout points, or shuttle stops, take pictures, and go for a short walk.

For more activity, each park has hiking trails for beginners to expert-level hikers.

You can see the highlights of each park in about a day, but allow more time at any park where you want to experience more hiking.

Start and end in Las Vegas and drive counterclockwise.

Since driving from Las Vegas to Moab , where Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park are located, is quite long, consider stopping in Page, AZ (home of the famous Horseshoe Bend ), or Monument Valley on the AZ/UT border. Or both!

From Moab, drive to Capitol Reef National Park, then Bryce Canyon National Park , and lastly Zion National Park before heading back to Vegas.

If you prefer, you can also do this route in reverse!

Give yourself at least a week to do this road trip, or longer if you’re stopping in Page and/or Monument Valley.

South Dakota

If you’re craving wide open spaces, plenty of buffalo and prairie dog sightings, gorgeous caves, and a quirky roadside stop or two, then South Dakota is the American road trip for you!

Driving from east to west (though you can easily reverse it), pay a quick visit to Sioux Falls and then The World’s Only Corn Palace (their words, not mine) before diving into Badlands National Park.

Drive the Badlands National Park scenic loop, do some hiking (the Notch Trail is not to be missed), and when you’re ready for a break, detour to Wall Drug for a heavy dose of kitsch.

Head north to visit the Wild West town of Deadwood, and if you’re up for it, detour into Wyoming for a quick visit to Devil’s Tower, the first US national monument!

Back in South Dakota, base yourself in or around Keystone to explore Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, and–if you have time–Spearfish Canyon.

Going inside Wind Cave National Park requires a guided tour, so be sure to book in advance!

Determined road-trippers can do justice to this South Dakota road trip route in about 5 days, though 7 allows for a bit more hiking and a chance to add on places like Rapid City.

South Dakota is also perfectly located for combining with road trips in Wyoming and beyond, so you can easily use this route as a building block for a bigger US road trip itinerary!

Scenic I-90 from Portland to Yellowstone

Visiting Yellowstone National Park from Portland, Oregon is easy and there is no better route to take than the scenic I-90.

This 812-mile trip starts from Portland and takes the I-84 along the very beautiful Columbia River Gorge.

As you get started, stop at Multnomah Falls to photograph the famous waterfall!

Continue to Richland where you could rest overnight before jumping onto the I-90, the longest interstate in the United States.

This interstate highway passes Spokane before trailing alongside the lake of Coeur d’Alene, a beautiful part of the country, and then snakes through the Nez Pearce-Clearwater National Forests.

Imagine a highway surrounded by forests on either side, and you have an idea of what this part of I-90 is like.

A great town to stop along the I-90 is Missoula, which sits along the Clark Fork River and has plenty on offer including a great park, Caras Park where families and visitors can unwind.

After Missoula, continue along the I-90 and join Highway 287 which will take you to West Yellowstone to start your visit to the first national park.

This route from Portland to Yellowstone is 812 miles via these interstates and highways and could be done in two days but is best enjoyed over a few days before your  Yellowstone vacation .

As you get close to the national park, you can also find some great camping near Yellowstone along this route.

Northern New Mexico

Northern New Mexico is one of the most beautiful places in the United States to have a road trip.

The weather is gorgeous and sunny at almost any time of year, and many of the state’s most interesting places are just an hour’s drive away from each other!

Start the road trip in the state’s largest city, Albuquerque. Almost all people arriving in New Mexico start here because this is where the major airport is located.

Tourism in Albuquerque has really taken off since the show  Breaking Bad  was filmed here, but those who are not  Breaking Bad  fans will still love seeing Albuquerque’s charming Old Town.

If you’re lucky enough to be able to plan your trip around the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta , you won’t be sorry you did!

After a couple of days in Albuquerque, drive an hour up to Santa Fe and spend a couple of days here. This is New Mexico’s capital and its most beautiful city.

You can stop for a bath in the hot springs at Ten Thousand Waves and see the historic Spanish Colonial Palace of the Governors. 

Finally, check out some smaller towns like Los Alamos, where the atomic bomb was developed, Chimayo, which is a popular pilgrimage site, and Taos, where you can visit a Native American pueblo that’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You’ll be amazed at how much Northern New Mexico has to offer!

I recommend spending about a week on this USA road trip route.

Denver to Yellowstone Loop

Starting from Denver, you can easily craft a fantastic road trip plan.

USA national parks are in abundance in the west, but from Denver, you can hit three of the most legendary in short order: Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and the ever-popular Yellowstone National Park.

For your first stop, base yourself in the beautiful mountain town of Estes Park , where you can access some of the best hikes in RMNP while also enjoying this idyllic mountain town.

From there, head up to Yellowstone to enjoy a few days of geysers, geothermal pools, wildlife spotting, and utterly unique views.

On your way back to Denver, head to Grand Teton National Park to visit highlights like Jenny Lake, enjoy some hiking, and soak in iconic views like those along Mormon Row.

Don’t miss the chance to spend a bit of time in Jackson Hole, one of the USA’s most iconic mountain towns, while you’re there!

We recommend setting aside at least a week for this all-American road trip–if you’d like to spend some time in Denver, a full two weeks is best.

San Francisco to Yosemite Loop

Typically, you think of the Pacific Coast Highway when you think of the best California road trips, right? Well…consider something a little different!

This 10 day California road trip , forming a loop from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park and back, is one of the best road trips in the USA.

You’ll get the best of big-city excitement, some time by the ocean, beautiful scenic vistas, and outdoor fun galore!

After spending a few days in San Francisco , hit up Monterey, Carmel, and part of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Can’t-miss destinations include the Golden Gate Bridge, Lombard Street, Alcatraz, Big Sur, and the world-class Monterey Aquarium.

Next head east over to Yosemite National Park for some incredible hiking, followed by a little wine tasting in Sonoma or Napa Valley, a stop in Muir Woods to see the giant redwoods, then finally back to San Francisco.

This road trip is perfect for families, couples, or even solo travelers and is guaranteed to be one you won’t forget!

You’ll need at least 10 days to do justice to this epic California road trip.

The American Southwest from Las Vegas

Thanks to inexpensive flights, a convenient location in southern Nevada, and its widespread appeal, Las Vegas is a fantastic place to kick off a road trip through the southwest!

With Las Vegas as a starting point, head off to Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada before making your way to the ultimate USA road trip destination: the Grand Canyon.

From there, loop up to Moab to explore Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, head west to visit Bryce Canyon National Park , and then move onto Zion before circling back to Vegas.

With extra time, you can add on more exciting stops in Arizona and Utah like Monument Valley, Page (home of Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend ), Capitol Reef National Park, Goblin Valley State Park, and more.

Ten days is a good starting place for this American road trip, but you can do an abridged version in one week, and the sky is the limit as far as how long you can take to explore every nook, cranny, and slot canyon in the region!

New York State Road Trip

The route from Buffalo, NY to New York City is full of great attractions and small towns to explore, and the variety of stops along the way will be sure to entertain every member of the family!

To begin the journey, start at Niagara Falls in Buffalo, NY.

See the roaring power of the American and Canadian falls, and if you are up for it, take a ride on the Maid of the Mist to get up close and personal with the falls.

After visiting the falls continue on to Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East, for a day of hiking and enjoying nature.

Continue on to   Rochester, NY , where you will find a variety of fun attractions, history, and nature experiences.

The next stop along the route is the Finger Lakes region, where you can enjoy the lakes, waterfalls, and some wine tasting.

From there, head to Saratoga Springs, known for horse racing and mineral baths.

After visiting Saratoga Springs, continue on to the Catskills Region, where you will find plenty of scenic views and hiking trails for hikers of all abilities.

Finish up your road trip in New York City, where you can visit the Statue of Liberty, The World Trade Center Memorial, Central Park, and Times Square, among many other iconic attractions!

We recommend taking a minimum of one week to fully experience all stops along this USA road trip route.

Miami to Key West Road Trip

If you’re looking for a tropical road trip, consider making the drive from Miami to Key West .

On this US road trip, you’ll travel through the islands that make up the Florida Keys on the “Overseas Highway.”

It’s said to be one of the best road trips in the country!

While the drive to Key West isn’t too far (165 miles), the stops and the scenic beauty along the way are what make it worthwhile. The road trip is full of fun and quirky things to do and see!

The John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the Spiegel Grove Shipwreck are two great spots for exploring under the surface, where you’ll find coral reefs, sea life, and a sunken Navy ship.

For above the water, consider taking a cruise on The Africa Queen through the canals of Key Largo. 

There are great restaurants and bars along the way too.

Some popular stops include Plantation Key’s Mile Marker 88 Beach & Bar for all the tiki vibes, Islamorada Beer Company, and Robbie’s Restaurant, where you can feed tarpons from the dock. 

This road trip is best for a weekend (2-3 days).

New England

Made up of some of the USA’s smallest states, the northeast region of New England is one of the best places for a road trip in the USA.

Featuring historic cities (hello Boston !), adorable small towns, a rugged coastline, gorgeous harbors, and plenty of lighthouses, New England spots a charm and culture all its own.

Consider starting and ending your New England road trip in Boston, the region’s largest city and airport hub, where you can walk the Freedom Trail, stroll cobblestone lanes, and visit some of the most impressive universities and museums in the country.

From there, make your way to beautiful Acadia National Park in Maine, stopping at charming coastal villages like Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kennebunkport, Maine along the way–plus of course, a stop in the charming city of Portland.

On your way back south, drop by the White Mountain National Forest, and beautiful towns like Stowe, Vermont (legendary for its fall foliage) and Woodstock.

If you have time, head south of Massachusetts before heading back to Boston, visiting the Gilded Age mansions in Newport, Rhode Island, and the idyllic small town of Mystic, Connecticut.

To take a USA road trip through all six New England states, two weeks or more is best. 

However, with less time you can easily pick and choose a couple of states to visit and still have an amazing road trip experience!

Texas Hill Country

Tucked into the central part of the Lone Star State, west of both Austin and San Antonio, lies an oasis of beauty.

Visit the Texas Hill Country for sparkling rivers, charming small towns, incredible hiking, beautiful waterfalls, excellent Texas barbecue , magnificent wildflowers, and more wineries and distilleries than you can count.

Some of the best things to do in the Texas Hill Country include visiting the town of Fredericksburg, which is known for its German heritage, enjoying a wine tasting, exploring beautiful Wimberley, climbing Enchanted Rock, exploring dramatic limestone caves, sampling barbecue, and visiting some of the best swimming holes near Austin , including the legendary Hamilton Pool and Jacob’s Well.

Be sure to save time for a couple of state parks, as well!

In addition to Enchanted Rock, popular state parks in the Hill Country include Garner State Park, Guadalupe River State Park, and Colorado Bend State Park (home to 70-foot Gorman Falls).

The lakes are also unforgettable: don’t miss a chance to admire the beauty of Canyon Lake or Lake Travis during this incredible US road trip!

Even if you only have one day, it’s worth taking a quick Texas Hill Country road trip–but ideally, we recommend setting aside a week to explore.

While you can visit year-round, bluebonnet season (roughly late March-April) is undoubtedly the most scenic time to visit!

Northwest Arkansas

Packed with beautiful forests, idyllic hot springs, historic towns, and a lesser-known but beautiful national park, Northwest Arkansas is the perfect option for travelers looking for an interesting but off-the-beaten path US road trip destination.

Start your road trip at Hot Springs National Park, one of the only US national parks to be set in an urban (really, more like small-town) setting.

Nine historic bathhouses in the national park line Bathhouse Row, where visitors flocked to enjoy the local hot springs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

You can still soak in two of them today!

From there, head north all the way to Eureka Springs, which is known for its historic architecture, beautiful setting in the Ozark Mountains, and even more hot springs.

Along the way, consider detouring slightly to visit Hawksbill Crag (pictured below), one of the best viewpoints in Arkansas.

Whether you want to hike, soak, shop, or simply relax and enjoy the views, Northwest Arkansas is a delightful getaway.

This trip can be completed over a long weekend, but 5 days would be ideal.

For one of the best road trips in Texas , begin in El Paso and head southeast. 

West Texas is filled with art, much of it BIG Texas art.

Before reaching the iconic West Texas art hub of Marfa , you’ll encounter some roadside art stops that include the “Giant” movie set installation featuring huge cutouts of stars Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean, and Rock Hudson.

This is followed by stops at the Prada Marfa store that never opens, and at the railroad-side World’s Smallest Target Store that is complete with a shopping cart. 

The tiny town of Marfa itself is home to the Chinati Foundation’s series of huge indoor and outdoor installations located on a former military base, as well as a plethora of art galleries–one of which displays Andy Warhol’s “The Last Supper.” 

In addition to art, Marfa has a viewing center where locals and visitors alike congregate at night hoping to see the area’s legendary and unexplained bouncing light orbs.

And if that’s not enough, you can also dine at the Stripes convenience store where Anthony Bourdain ate a fried burrito while filming what turned out to be his last episode of “Parts Unknown.” 

This is just the tip of the iceberg of a fascinating visit to this area. 

Allow 3 nights to visit this area and another night or two for an excursion to Big Bend National Park.

Northern Michigan

When considering the best road trips in America, the Great Lakes are often overlooked in favor of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts–but for a magnificent summer road trip through one of the USA’s hidden gems, head to northern Michigan.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Lake Michigan and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior are located a mere five hours or so apart if you drive directly.

And, if you’ve never set eyes on the Great Lakes, this road trip will defy your expectations of what lakeshores look like!

Between them, be sure to take a step back in time at Mackinac Island, one of the best places to visit in Michigan.

Here’s the twist, though: no cars are allowed on the island, so you’ll need to leave yours on the mainland during your island escape!

Plan for about a week to make the most of this USA itinerary.

However, when most people visit, they experience the inside of their resort and maybe a few beautiful places on day trips.

In truth, the best way to experience this incredible island is on a road trip to all of the best places on the island!

To start your Kauai road trip, go to the number one destination on the island: the Na Pali Coast.

The Na Pali Coast defies description, it is a place you have to see to believe.

The best way to see the area is on the Awa’awapuhi Trail, but make sure you hike the trail on a clear day for the best views!

From here, check out the Alakai Swamp, a boardwalk that also boasts incredible views.

As you leave the Na Pali Coast area, head down towards Waimea and see the Waimea Black Sand Beach.

Moving along the coast, stop at the Poipu area and see one of Kauai’s famous Hula shows.

Continue this coastal route and head into Wailua State Park. In this beautiful area, you’ll want to see Wailua Falls, Opaeka’a Falls, and hike the Kuilau Ridge.

The Kuilau Ridge Hike offers a 360-degree view of the Kauai landscape that will leave your jaw on the floor.

Finish your road trip by heading up to the Princeville area and checking out Queen’s Bath.

This is a beautiful tide pool that will make for the perfect ending to your Kauai road trip.

Make sure to check tides and go at low tide, as this area isn’t safe at high tide.

We recommend completing this Kauai road trip in 3 days.

Road to Hana, Maui

When you think of Hawaii you may not think of a road trip but prepare to have your mind altered.

When traveling on the island of Maui driving the Road to Hana is a must!

The scenic drive takes you from Kahului to the east side of the island to the town of Hana. 

The Road to Hana is 52 miles of one-lane bridges, hairpin turns, and curves.

This drive will take up an entire day so make sure you pack lots of snacks and fill up for gas beforehand.

The winding road takes you past jaw-dropping seascape views, roaring waterfalls, and exotic flora.

Some highlights of this drive include Ho’okipa, Twin Falls, the Painted Forest, Honomanu Bay, Wailua Falls, and the awe-inspiring Wai’anapanapa State Park.

Don’t forget to wear your bathing suit and pack a towel because pulling off the side of the road to take a dip in the ocean or swim under a waterfall is the name of the game.

Buckle up, enjoy the ride, and prepare for a trip of a lifetime.

You can drive the Road to Hana in a day, but if you’d like to savor the experience, consider camping or staying in Hana town for a few days to make sure you see all the best sights along this road trip in the USA.

Alaska Road Trip (Anchorage to Valdez)

Alaska is filled with excellent American road trip opportunities, especially in the summer.  

Start in Anchorage, when the museums are open.

Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center to learn about the indigenous people of the ‘last frontier’, and the Alaska Public Lands Information Center to learn about the history and culture of Alaska for free.

Take the Trolley tour for a fun overview of Anchorage, its history, and the earthquake of ‘64.

Ride the free shuttle to the Ulu factory, and check out the salmon runs at Ship Creek.

On day 2, head to Palmer and visit the Iditarod Museum before driving to Hatcher Pass.

Go to the high point for incredible views, hike the trails, and admire blue mountain lakes. 

Continue on this road to loop back to town.

From there, head to Matanuska Glacier, located one hour from Palmer. Spend day 4 hiking to and on the glacier. 

After that, drive toward Valdez Alaska on the Scenic Richardson Highway. It’s about 3 hours to Valdez.

Stop at Worthington Glacier Recreation Area to see the glacier or hike it. Stop at the various pullouts to view the waterfalls along Thompson Pass and the Highway.

If the salmon are spawning, visit Crooked Creek and see if you can spot a bear fishing for dinner.

While in and around Valdez, also consider taking an all-day wildlife glacier cruise, visiting the Valdez Museum and Annex, and visiting the Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum.

This is a 5-day, 6-night road trip that keeps visitors busy every day.

Everybody skips over Arkansas and Missouri when they suggest road trips, big mistake. Some of the best driving roads and scenery are located in the Ozarks and Quachita National Forests. Start in Springfield, Mo to the north. Stops could include Branson, Mo, Buffalo National River, Little Rock, Ar, Hot Springs, Ar, Talimena Scenic Drive from Mena, Ar then back north through the river valley of Fort Smith, Ar,, up Hwy 23 (Pig Trail) to Historic Victorian Eureka Springs, Ar. Then back to Springfield, Mo. You could easily spend 10-14 days on this road trip and see very diverse entertainment, scenery, hiking and waterfalls, mineral and hot springs, mountain and valley vistas. Best time to travel would be spring and/or fall. Scenery rivals anywhere in the country.

It is a beautiful part of the country! We actually visited Eureka Springs the weekend we got engaged, stayed at the Crescent. 🙂 We had someone signed up to contribute the Ozarks to this post but we haven’t heard back from them yet–maybe we’ll add it ourselves during a post update!

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.

1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66

It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.

Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. 2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2

21. The Florida Keys: An Island-Hopping Getaway

For a sunny road trip itinerary in Florida, skip Miami and head farther south. Beginning in Key Largo and ending in Key West, the Florida Keys Scenic Highway is often overlooked for more well-known routes up north, but it is well worth going out of your way to experience.

As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. Just about everyone loves a road trip. However, if you really want to get the most out of your driving adventure, you’ll need to do some good planning ahead of time. Following our ten step Road Trip planning guide may just help you have that epic road trip vacation you’ve always dreamed of.

There is nothing better for lightening your mood, getting over cabin fever, or just enjoying life than a good old-fashioned American road trip! We should know, we road trip a lot. We’ve road tripped in every single state of the USA as well as much of Canada and the rest of the world. We just can’t get enough of the road; we love it.

Taking on the planning for a road trip can be a bit daunting. There is so much to consider. Just take the steps in order and you won’t miss any of the key details needed to plan the most amazing adventure.

Step 1: Decide Where You Want to Go?

Thinking about where you want to go can be overwhelming, especially if you are just starting out with traveling by road. Take some time to contemplate how you want to travel.

• Are you interested in staying close to home or going someplace brand new?
• Do you mind flying to a starting point and picking up a rental car?
• Do you want to experience some of those famous road trips that you’ve seen on TV or read about?
• Do you want to spend all your time in the outdoors or do you want some city time too?
• Do you want to take your time on backroads or do you want to get to your stops faster and travel by Interstate?

In some cases, you can be road-tripping to a city, national park, or resort and they will be the destination, but in other road trips, the journey is the destination.

Take Route 66 for instance, to see it you need to drive and drive and drive. All the while you are sightseeing, taking photographs of the iconic landmarks, and probably blasting some tunes on your stereo.

One of our favorite road trips was going cross country on I-40 , which was a necessity, but we made the most of it and planned some great stops along the way. On another of our favorite trips, we were driving to meet up with family and spent time driving north through California and Oregon on the Pacific Coast Highway.

National Parks are such a huge draw in the U.S., and we’ve done our fair share of them, although we’re far from doing them all. Some national parks we’ve visited and loved are Mount Rainier and Olympic in Washington, the Utah national parks, and of course the two biggies Yosemite and Yellowstone . We’d love to explore Big Bend National Park as well as Mammoth Caves, but we just haven’t gotten there yet.

What is Your Reason for Taking this Road Trip?

Some reasons for taking to the road:

• Easy and cheap way to get from one place to the next
• Visit family and friends that live far away
• Get to know and enjoy time with a new partner or friend
• Follow a passion or hobby, like quilting, baseball, music, etc.
• Just to drive, get away from it all

We use road trips for a variety of reasons. The most common is just to easily and cheaply get from one place to the next as we travel, but that’s not the only reason.

One reason is that we want to visit family or friends that don’t live within normal driving distance. It takes an effort to get to see them, and even with the most engaging video calls , you miss them.

Sometimes we just road trip to get in the car and get away from it all. We don’t have a real destination in mind. The act of moving, the change of scenery, just being together is the goal. Where we stop or what we do is secondary.

A road trip is also great for getting to know someone. Trapped in a moving vehicle with someone you don’t know well tells you a lot about that person. It won’t take long before the normal conversation you have is played out and you have to start looking for new topics to explore. I truly believe a road trip should be a prerequisite for getting a marriage license.

So the first thing to do is decide what you want to get out of this road trip. Is it alone time with your travel partner or partners, or is it strictly for transportation?

How Much Time Do You Have for Your Trip?

For many people, this is a huge consideration. Whether you need to take leave from your job or not is important. Are you fitting the trip into the amount of time you have, or are you taking the leave to do the trip you want?

There are many ways to help you use as little leave for your road trip as possible. To begin with, you might want to fly to the start of the road trip and rent a car. It might cost more, but you will get to your starting point faster. This is the way we start many road trips. Yes, it’s more expensive, but the real vacation part of the trip starts sooner.

Another way is to creatively take advantage of three day weekends and holidays. For example, if you have a holiday coming up, say Thanksgiving, you can just take one day of leave for a four or five day road trip instead of taking all of them as leave days on an off week.

We love taking four day road trips and only taking one day in conjunction with a three day weekend. In our experience, the best day to take off is Monday. Most people will take Fridays off, so you are often competing with less people when you ask for the Monday off. The traffic is usually better on Mondays since most people are back at work and not on the highways.

At any rate, you usually will have an idea of how many days your road trip will last. When I’m planning a road trip, it’s often for a long weekend, one week, or two weeks. We have hardly gone out longer than that. So the first thing I do is make a calendar and a list of things I’m interested in doing. Finally, be sure to take into account the time of year. During the summer, the weather is most likely to be perfect for a road trip, but the roads could be jammed with other road trippers. The same may be true during major holidays, of course. If you decide to cruise the country in the winter, you might need snow tires or chains and should expect difficult driving conditions.

Jim and I love maps. Yes, we know you can’t live without the GPS or smart phone, but there’s something about holding onto a paper map, especially the kind that I can never re-fold the way it’s meant to be folded. We feel that paper maps are important for grounding us where we are at any given moment. Sometimes when only using GPS, we can’t help but let go of the bigger picture.

At the very least, we think you should have a fold out road map of the USA and a spiral road atlas. They are both really, very handy. I also have bought the USA scratch off map, because it makes me feel so satisfied when I’ve checked off another state.

If your plan is to take some time in a particular state, we recommend you buy that state’s maps as well. Make sure it’s one that shows all the scenic byways. These are roads that are designated as gorgeous drives. It’s a great way to start road tripping! You will want to get one for your state as well as your surrounding states.

When I’m looking for inspiration on where to go, I’m looking for gorgeous landscapes. So here are a few hashtags on Instagram that will give you beautiful landscape ideas for destinations.

• # newenglandpictures
• #pnwparadise

And of course you can look it up by state as well. What’s great about typing in a state is that Instagram will give you some more ideas of places to check. Here are a few examples:

Facebook groups are large forums that cover just about anything, so if you are looking for road trip inspiration, you can find them by searching. You usually have to join a group and answer questions, but I think they are worth it if you find informative ones. Here’s a couple I found that I think are pretty good:

Pinterest is a great place to look for inspiration. Whenever I’m beginning to plan a trip, I will go there and just search. You can find so many good articles on the platform.

Here is another good place to start: US Road Trips . Whenever you see a great pin, click on it and save it to your own Pinterest account. After perusing this page of great things to do on a road trip, go back to the top and hit “more ideas.”

Pro Tip: When you scroll over a pin, it should tell you the website that it comes from. If it looks like a gobbely-gook address or is from a photo site, I won’t click on it. When I find something that seems like it is coming from a trustworthy site and interesting, I will click through to the article and take notes from there.

Travel Blogger Websites

Since I know how hard travel bloggers work to give you the best experience, and they really travel a lot, I trust them more than regular review sites. When I search in Google, I skip over all the commercial sites and look for website names that are obviously bloggers. I know they will give the true scoop! Usually you’ll start finding them on Page 2 of Google.

Step 2: What do You Want to See and Do?

Now that you know where you are going to go and have a general idea of the type of trip you want to take, you can start discovering all the cool things to do and see along the way.

The first part of this is just to make a list, a wish list, don’t think too hard about it at first. Get your wish list full of possibilities, then you can narrow it down later when you decide on timing and of course, budget.

If you are traveling with someone else, you will want to make sure that they either make a list as well, or you hand over your list and have them star or sticker the places they are interested in too. You might even put a minus sign or X or something if they definitely do not want to do it.

When you do travel with a partner or your family or whomever, you have to make the decision beforehand if you will all do the same things or if you can separate at times.

For example, when we were visiting Charleston, South Carolina, my sister didn’t want to go to Fort Sumter because she gets seasick and didn’t want to take the boat. Instead she and her daughter took a spa afternoon while we explored the fort. Since this was all decided before we took the trip, everyone was happy. No one felt left out or slighted.

Step 3: Where do You Want to Eat and Sleep?

Deciding on where to stay.

Whether you want to camp or stay at luxury hotels, it’s getting to the point that you need to make reservations for your overnight stays before you go.

It used to be that you could just jump in the car and take your chances. Don’t get me wrong, I still do this occasionally. However, I have ended up once or twice having to spend the night in my car, which is by no means where I prefer to sleep. It’s just too hard to get that kink out of your neck.

After you and your travel partners decide what kinds of places you want to stay in, I would start reserving them, especially if your road trip is going to take you to many places night after night.

On the other hand, you can also head to one place where you’ll sleep, like an AirBnB, house or apartment rental, or even a hotel. Then you can take your road trips out to different attractions, even driving to another town, and driving back again every day.

What this does for you is let you not completely pack up each day, probably do laundry, and cook some of your meals. It can even provide a comfortable place to take a down day if you want.

Deciding on Where to Eat

I don’t know about you, but food is a major part of any vacation for me. I love sussing out those restaurants and cafes that have weathered the test of time and yet only the locals seem to know about them.

To find restaurants I’m interested in while road tripping, I do a fair amount of research ahead of time. Cities are pretty easy. You can usually find a good blog or two just on their restaurant recommendations. I find these to be somewhat helpful for finding the local favorites.

It’s important to find out what food or dish a city or state is known for that you don’t really eat anywhere else. Some iconic examples are deep dish pizza in Chicago and etouffée in Louisiana. Of course, these two aren’t the only places that have put their unique foods on the map. In fact, we collect these local dishes and when we visit those areas, we definitely want to try them.

So, let’s say we’re heading to New Orleans where I know I want to try and taste as much Cajun food as I can. First I find out what are the local dishes to try in New Orleans, like beignets, gumbo, and poor boy sandwiches.

Then we research where to find the best of each. Our first search shows us that there is a food blogger specializing in New Orleans food , so I would definitely take a look at that website. Then I find a couple of restaurants with a good number of high reviews that serve up the best examples and put them on my list of places I wish to eat.

Depending on the food, the restaurant, and how much I want to eat there, I will maybe even make reservations at least a week before. I hate to say it, but yes, we’ve missed out on some really great local restaurants because we didn’t make reservations. However, most of the time, we pretty much wing it, because we don’t really like to be tied down to days and times. While we are on a road trip, we really like to have a more natural flow.

Step 4: Make Your Map For Your Journey

I love making and using Google Maps on my trips. I’ve made at least 100 of them, no kidding. Here’s my process:

• Go to Google Maps, and hit the three lines in the top left corner.
• On the left sidebar, go down and click on Your Places (you may need to sign in to your Google account).
• Click on the Maps tab.
• Then scroll all the way to the bottom and click on “Create Map”.
• Click on “Untitled Map” to change the title and description, then click save.
• Now start adding places you are going on the map.
• Start typing a place name in the search box and then when the place pops up, click Add to map.
• Keep adding more places.
• When adding specific attractions, restaurants, hotels, I use different pin colors. Just hit the paint can to change.
• As you add places, they will be added to the bottom of your list. Just drag it to the correct position.
• At the end you will have a list of places, in order, that you are going.
• You can then share the map you’ve made with your traveling companions; just click on the Share button at the top and copy the link to send in an email.

Step 7: Create Your Road Trip Itinerary and Budget

While creating an itinerary is definitely recommended, I don’t think you should schedule out every minute of every day. Many of the best times we’ve had happened because we were willing to be spontaneous and change things up occasionally, and make a detour or an unexpected stop.

It seems no matter how much planning and research you do, it’s impossible to find everything some places have to offer. It’s such a bummer when you feel like you don’t have enough time to do it all, and you have to say to yourself that something will have to wait until next time.

However, it is important to create an itinerary and a budget, even if it is going to change.

Your Road Trip Itinerary

You guessed it, there are still more questions to answer when building your itinerary:

• How much driving do you feel comfortable with each day?
• Are you more about scenic byways than stops?
• Are you more into country driving or city driving?
• Do you mind taking Interstates, or do you want to stick to secondary highways?
• Do you want to schedule one thing to do in the morning, then one in the afternoon?
• Do you want to fill up your days with as much as you can possibly cram into them?
• Do you want to take the day to go hiking and picnicking in the mountains or kayak or run?

Sample Generic Itineraries

There are many types of road trips, but I have two main types that I usually do. I call them the circle and the star road trip itineraries.

The circle road trip is just that, a round trip itinerary starting and ending in the very same place. This could be home, or an airport that I’ve flown into. During a trip, I try not to drive the same road more than once, getting to see more views, landscapes, and attractions.

Especially in recent times, I’ve been making more star road trip itineraries. A star road trip is when I rent a place, usually on AirBnB, for a week or more. It’s my base, and from there I take short day trips to all the things I want to see and do.

There are pros and cons to both types. The circle trip allows me to cover more miles, but it also is a bit harder when making reservations for places to stay. An example of a circle trip would be to fly into Albuquerque, drive to Santa Fe, then Madrid, then back to Albuquerque to turn in my rental and fly home.

On the other hand, accommodations are one and done with the star trip, but I can’t get out and do as much. I usually do this type when there are many things to do very close by. New England is really good for this. There is so much to do in a 1-2 hour radius of the bigger cities. For example, staying in Boston and taking day trips to Cape Cod, Rockport, Newport, RI, Salem, and Plymouth.

The Budget For Your Trip

What types of items do you need to think about when budgeting for a road trip? Are you going to go cheap or splurge out on this vacation?

I think many people head out on vacation without really thinking about a budget, but travel expenses can certainly add up quicker than you think. Fuel, food, and fun things to do will all need to be factored into your budget considerations.

The biggest cost by far is your accommodations. Then if you are renting a car or camper, that will be up there as well. Attractions and activities can be pricey too. Even going to a museum can cost you $20 or so. Do a few of those and you’re really adding up your costs.

So, for budgeting, make reservations on all the high priced items like hotels and rentals beforehand. Then find your estimated fuel costs. We always use https://www.fueleconomy.gov for this. Now, add in about $50 per person per day (for food and incidentals). Soon you’ll have a really good idea of your total budget.

Don’t forget that you haven’t begun to pay for drinks, parking, or souvenirs yet. Of course, if you know that you want to go to that one expensive restaurant, you should probably include that in your budget planning as well.

Step 8: Pack and Prep For Your Trip

There are several things you want to do before you head out on your epic road trip. You will want to make sure your car is in optimal condition, and that you have everything you need to have a great time. Of course if you are renting, be sure to check out the car and the safety gear before leaving the lot.

Vehicle Checklist

Before heading out on the road, especially for a multi-day trip, it’s a good idea to check out your car. Make sure that everything is working correctly and that the maintenance is up to date. Here are some things you want to make sure are in good working order:

• Check your car’s paperwork to ensure your brakes, oil, tire rotation, and safety inspection are up to date. If not, I would get it in the shop before you go.
• Make sure to have your up-to-date car insurance and registration in your glove compartment, along with your owner’s manual.
• Make sure you have all of your emergency equipment, like tire changing equipment, a good first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher
• Check all lights, including signal lights
• Check all fluid levels, ie. washer fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and oil
• Check the windshield wipers for smooth cleaning
• Check and adjust the tire pressure (don’t forget to check the spare tire)
• Check the engine and under the car for leaks

Try to find out if there are any unique things you’ll need for the trip. For example, on our road trip up the Dalton Highway, we were told to bring two full size spare tires. We were sure glad we did, because we needed both of them, and there are very few places along the way to repair tires.

General Packing List for a Road Trip

There are some things you want to make sure you have in your car to make your trip fun and worry-free. Here’s what I like to take in my car:

• Water Bottles
• Coffee Mugs
• Some road trip games to play on the road
• Windex wipes or spray and paper towels
• USB cables for phones and devices to charge while in the car

Recommended Websites & Apps for Planning Your Road Trip

There are some incredible apps for your mobile device that can help with planning your trip and with managing things during the adventure. Download them, try them out, and learn to use them before you hit the road.

• AllTrails – helpful app for finding hiking, biking, and snow sports
• The Dyrt – This website has reviews and ranks for every campsite in the country
• FreeRoam – App with advice and tools for finding the best free camping areas
• GasBuddy – Find the best price for gas along the route, save money and maybe even win free gas
• iExit – Take the guesswork out of which exit to take for the best food or lowest gas prices
• Waze – Driving directions with live up-to-date info on collisions, construction, and speed traps
• ParkMe – Find the closest and cheapest parking near your destination
• Flush Toilet Finder – Does exactly what it says; find a nearby flush toilet when you need it most

Some Additional Packing Considerations

After you’ve got the basics down, think about any other items you might need that would make your trip easier, more comfortable, or more affordable. For instance, if you’ll be staying in several different places during the trip, bring a small bag that holds your overnight items and the next day’s clothes. Leave the bigger suitcase in the car and just carry in the small one.

If you’ll be staying in AirBnBs or have a kitchenette in your hotel, pack a small cooking essentials kit. We always bring a sharp knife, small cutting board, salt and pepper, sugar, cooking oil, can opener, corkscrew (priorities!), small non-stick frying pan, and a spatula. You never know what will be available in your accommodation.

Finally, be sure and pack plenty of snacks. We like to take a few bags of trail-mix, a box of crackers, and some granola bars for those times when you just can’t find a place to stop. You don’t want anyone in the car getting hangry!

Step 9: Road Trip Tips for Safety and Fun

There are so many things to consider when taking a road trip, but these tips will get you started and help you make a memorable journey:

• Do your research and try to avoid driving during high traffic times. This might mean leaving earlier or getting in late.
• Take many breaks while driving. Driving is fun, but sometimes we get into our heads that we have to arrive someplace at a specific time and we don’t take enough breaks. It’s important to stay aware and hydrated for your and your passenger’s safety.
• As the driver, don’t fiddle with the interior of the car like the air, phone, map, directions, whatever. Take along a co-pilot to do all that menial stuff. Just pay attention to driving.

Plan your in-car entertainment before hitting the road. Does your car have screens in the back seat? Do you have a bluetooth connection for your mobile devices? Consider downloading some audio books or movies for those long stretches of highway where there might not be much to see.

Recommended Entertainment Apps for Your Road Trip

Take our word for it, data connectivity can be very spotty, especially on back roads and byways. Make sure you download before you go. Download plenty of music, audio books, or podcasts and be ready for those long stretches of road with

• Audible – Paid subscription service for audio books, podcasts, and more.
• Kindle – Sync with your Amazon Prime account for audio books, etc.
• Libby – The best library app. Connect to your local library for free audio book downloads.
• Podcasts – Download episodes of your favorites to catch up on.
• Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora – Download music for the road

The perfect itinerary for an epic USA roadtrip (48 states at once)

Do you like roadtrips? They happen to be a very American tradition and we found the perfect itinerary to visit every state in the continental USA during 1 epic roadtrip. A great trip idea for those who have a lot of time but want to stay closer to home .

Personally, I love roadtrips and I hit the road as much as I can, despite also being an aviation geek: you can like both, right? What matters is traveling and seeing new places , no matter how.

So here are the maps and details of the 2 itineraries that allow you to see all the lower 48 states at once, depending on your travel preference.

Basics of the 2 epic USA roadtrip itineraries

The USA is a huge country, almost as big as Europe (it’s even larger than Canada when considering land area alone).

So the USA has a lot of variety in terms of landscapes, but even in terms of culture too (even if many who aren’t from the country don’t realize that).

If you aim to eventually visit every state, any 1 of these 2 itineraries is a great way to almost all of them at once. The only 2 states you’ll have left to visit after this roadtrip will be Hawaii and Alaska.

There’s a version for national parks and points of interest and a version for cities.

I’m on the quest to visit all 50 states myself (in addition to also visiting every country obviously), and I’m not doing too bad with 47 already.

But let’s just say it would’ve been much quicker to get to 48 at once with this roadtrip instead of having to do it over dozens of trips.

Here are the details.

48-state roadtrip – national parks/points of interest version

Here’s a map of the 1st itinerary.

It was conceived by American Ph.D. student Randy Olson, on  his blog , and it was done scientifically to optimize the routing: each stop represents a national park or a point of interest.

So you’re not just seeing every state, you’re seeing cool parts of every state (which sadly wasn’t our case in North Dakota during our very random 1200-miles-nonstop-in-2-days Flytrippers roadtrip across the Midwest just for fun).

Good times. Roadtrips always make for great stories.

Anyway, the itinerary has also been optimized to be as efficient a route as possible to see all 48 states, so you can rest assured you won’t be wasting any time.

If you only stop to sleep, you can complete this roadtrip in only 9 days, but we recommend taking at least a couple of weeks to explore all these places obviously.

And gas is significantly cheaper in the US in case you were wondering. You can start anywhere, it’s a continuous loop, and it passes through many spots near the Canadian border.

You can even take a shortcut from Michigan to Vermont through Canada, as the stop in Cleveland is only to keep Americans without a passport from crossing into the Great White North.

These are all very enticing attractions, for the most part. It seems I’ve only seen 14 of those, so maybe I should hit the road again after all.

48-state roadtrip – city version

Here’s a map of the 2nd itinerary.

If you’re more of a city slicker, the map’s author has created a 2nd version that routes you through amazing cities instead.

It is slightly shorter but quite as impressive: it makes you go through the “Best City to Visit” in each state, according to TripAdvisor .

But you won’t have all the lower 48 states, unlike the other itinerary. That’s because no city in Vermont, West Virginia, or North Dakota made the top 400 cities to visit ranking, unfortunately. So plan on making a few extra detours if you want to hit all states at once with this version of the itinerary.

Hello Andrew, the PHD student suggests in the 1st Itinnerary that the one stop to make in Washington State is the Hanford Nuclear Reservation?! Flat out, that is a terrible idea. It is in the middle of nowhere, I am just shocked it’s mentioned. Out of all the beautiful and amazing places to see in such a diverse state as Washington, a Nuclear Site was chosen? Surely this student could have done so much better. Thank you for allowing comments.

Having been all around the Olympic Peninsula, I agree that’s there are better stops. But my understanding is that he really optimized for the quickest way to do all 48 and had to choose a point of interest that wasn’t too far off that optimal path, hence that choice (I think).

Why do Americans always think the Statue of Liberty is in NY? it is in NJ. I’ve done road trips now that have taken in 39 states. Here’s a quiz to see how well you know the USA: Which state has only one syllable? Only one city has been name-checked on the moon. In which state is it? Which is the most Northerly of the contiguous states? In which state were Tennessee Williams and Elvis Presley born? Which was the last of the contiguous states to be admitted into the USA? Which four states all share a border with each other? Which state has the lowest population? Twelve cities are name-checked in “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” but only three states. Which? Which state has the longest name? Which two states have the most borders with other states? In which state is the geographical centre of the USA – and which one if you exclude Hawaii and Alaska? Which of the states of the USA has respectively the most Northerly, Southerly, Easterly and Westerly points?

The official Statue of Liberty address is Liberty Island, New York, NY, 10004.

There is no stop in North Dakota on the city version. You should stop in Fargo after Billings and before Sioux Falls

I’m 46 years old .. I have been to all 50 states and I’m 17 away from all 50 twice .. I have driven to 47 .. flown to Alaska, Hawaii and Washington..

“this roadtrip in only 9 days“ is extremely false statement. It is only 9 days if you are driving non stop, no breaks to even get out of your car, get gas, or actually see these places. From start to finish drive time it is 225 hours, 16 minutes = 9 days. Wow. Take some time to enjoy the view.

Hi! It is 13,699 miles (22,046 km) for the landmarks itinerary and 12,290 miles (19,780 km) for the city version. Crappy itinerary! Does not even include Zion National Park… and so many stops in the North Eastern states?? Nobody cares about those places except maybe a couple of places.

As explained, the PhD student who built the itinerary wanted to have one stop per state, and there are many states in the North-East so that’s why there are many stops there. I agree that Zion is an iconic spot, but his goal was also to optimize a routing that was as short as possible so that’s why it’s billed as an itinerary to see all lower 48 states at once and not an itinerary to see *the best spots*. But those interested in doing this can definitely adapt it and add many interesting stops for sure 🙂

For those who are short on time, here are some modifications that may come in handy while planning your Colorado road trip.

First of all, you can cut down the amount of days you spend in each location. We recommended around 2-3 days in each place, but you could get away with 1 or 2 in most places.

The driving times in between destinations are only around 1-3 hours, so you won’t be sacrificing too much time on the road.

The longest drive is from Great Sand Dunes National Park over to Mesa Verde National Park, which is just under 4 hours. Mesa Verde is pretty far out of the way in southwestern Colorado.

To save time on your Colorado itinerary, you could skip this national park and just go straight from Great Sand Dunes National Park to Grand Junction in 4.5 hours.

Or you could skip Boulder on your way back to Denver if you’re not a big fan of exploring cities. If you’re not big into skiing or snowboarding, you could also cut out Breckenridge since the ski resort is the main attraction here.

So even if you only have a week or two for a Colorado road trip, there are ways to make it work!

You can stop at Telluride Ski Resort on the way to Grand Junction, taking the Million Dollar Highway to get there. The Million Dollar Highway, a legendary stretch of U.S. Route 550 in Colorado, is renowned for breathtaking and sometimes hair-raising mountain views on the scenic drive.

Or stop in Aspen on the way from Glenwood Springs to Rocky Mountain National Park. Or spend more time exploring the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park, seeing destinations like Grand Lake and Adams Falls.

The Ultimate Michigan Road Trip Itinerary: 10 Days In The Great Lakes State

Offering access to four of the five Great Lakes, so much space that you’ll never feel crowded and glorious weather all summer, a Michigan road trip is the perfect getaway! But with plenty of things to do and see spread across the state’s two peninsulas, it can be tricky to put it all together.

Thanks to the help of some expert locals, we were able to craft the best Michigan road trip itinerary for our family trip. I’ve shared all our details below (including some things I would skip or change) so that you can get started planning your own amazing Michigan summer vacation!

Quick Overview

Days 1:  Arrive in Detroit or Grand Rapids Days 2-3:  Northern Lower Peninsula Days 4:  Mackinac Island Days 5:  Eastern Upper Peninsula Days 6-8:   Munising Days 9-10:   Houghton

You can use this itinerary as a general guide, but feel free to modify it to suit your needs. It would be easy to expand this to a two week summer road trip itinerary by continuing south to Chicago at the end for a few days before you return home, as we did. Chicago offers much better flights than the small airports in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan anyway!

If you’re pressed for time, consider taking Houghton off the itinerary and departing from Marquette (45 minutes from Munising) or Green Bay (3 hours from Munising).

Of course you can always reverse the order of this Michigan road trip itinerary if it’s more convenient for you.

Michigan Road Trip Logistics

• Our family did almost exactly this itinerary, departing from our home in Columbus Ohio. We did it as a loop, heading down to Chicago for several days after leaving Michigan. It would have been slightly faster to double back and head down via the Lower Peninsula – but where’s the fun in that? For those who live outside of the area, you’ll want to price out several combinations of flight and rental car options. The most convenient airport to start you off is Grand Rapids, followed by Detroit. If you choose either of those, you’ll probably need a one-way car rental and can look at dropping off and flying back from Houghton (CMX), Marquette (MQT) or even Green Bay (GRB). Alternatively, it’s easy enough to do the whole road trip as a loop beginning and ending in Chicago – you’d just have one long day of driving on either end.
• The first part of this itinerary is pretty fast-paced, and that’s in part because the Upper Peninsula is the star of the show but it’s far from most decent sized airports. One option to minimize short stays is to drive straight from the Detroit or Grand Rapids airport to Mackinaw City (4 hours) the day you arrive and start off with two nights on Mackinac Island. You could then extend your time in the eastern UP to two nights to explore slower.
• I strongly recommend that you book far in advance if you’re planning a summer trip to Michigan. I locked down all of our accommodations eight months in advance but there were still some places where our options were limited because we were late to the party.
• To save big on your accommodations, grab this credit card ASAP. We got it after we had already booked our hotels but it would have covered two of them and saved us a lot of money!
• Many areas of the Upper Peninsula are remote and quite undeveloped. There are pockets – especially along Lake Superior – where you won’t have cell phone service. I recommend that you use the Google Maps app to download the map above for offline use, which you’ll need to do when you have WiFi. Alternatively you may want to have a map like this one available to you. We had a paper map with us in one of our guidebooks but unfortunately there were some inaccuracies.
• If you’re driving your own car, bring a cooler and ice packs to keep a supply of water, snacks and lunch foods on hand. We did lots of picnic lunches, as restaurants are sometimes sparse and almost always more expensive than they would be elsewhere. We opted to book hotels that included breakfast for simplicity and to start our days faster, but you can also throw in some yogurt, cereal and shelf-stable milk if you plan to stay in vacation rentals.
• Each State Park charges is $11 per car for admission. We chose to buy the $39 non-resident annual pass at the first State Park we visited to give us flexibility and contribute to the upkeep of these beautiful sites. If you’re planning a Michigan roadtrip on a budget, you can map your itinerary to decide what’s right for you.

10 Day Michigan Road Trip Itinerary

Time to get into the details of our 10 day Michigan summer road trip itinerary!

1 Day in Detroit (or nearby)

Most people embarking on a Michigan road trip will start in the Lower Peninsula, with Detroit being the typical starting point thanks to the presence of the state’s largest airport. To get your bearings once you fly in, spend the night in Detroit or the nearby college town of Ann Arbor.

If you’re arriving early enough in the day and prefer to focus more time on the charming hamlets further north, you can skip this part and drive straight north – it’ll take you about four hours from Detroit to Petoskey or one of the nearby communities along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Things to do in Detroit

• The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation – This neat museum has a little bit of everything, from Presidential limousines and the actual bus Rosa Parks refused to leave to an exhibit focused on math and illusions.
• Ford Rouge factory tour – Want to see how cars are made? Sign up for a Ford factory tour! Production only occurs on weekdays before 2pm (earlier is better) so time your visit accordingly.
• Motown Museum – Learn all about the history of Motown and see where the hits were made! We’ve tried to go twice and been foiled both time – be sure to reserve your tickets when they become available three weeks in advance.
• Enjoy Ann Arbor – Stop into quaint Ann Arbor to explore its vibrant, hip Main Street. If you’re really lucky you’ll be there for the Ann Arbor Art Fair , which is the largest juried art fair in the US. We had a great time and bought some fun art from a variety of artists! Don’t miss lunch at Zingerman’s Deli , and consider calling in your order the night before to avoid long lines at this deservedly iconic spot.

2 Days in Northern Lower Peninsula

If you’re looking to start off your Michigan vacation with some relaxation, head to the northwest edge of “the Mitten” to kick things off. Folks here refer to Lake Michigan as “big lake” but routinely enjoy plenty of activities on the numerous small lakes dotting the region.

Things to do in Northern Lower Peninsula

Your time here doesn’t need a huge to-do list to be honest. Depending on where you stay, you could easily pass a few days lounging on the beaches of Lake Michigan, kayaking on a smaller lake (since the big lake is too rough) and enjoying ice cream and slices of Americana in the many cute towns around the area like Petoskey, Charlevoix and Harbor Springs.

In case you prefer some more specific adventures check out thse fun things to do in the area:

• Boyne Mountain – This ski resort transforms into an adventure center in the summer, boasting zip lines, the “world’s longest timber-towered suspension bridge”, chairlift rides, horseback riding and more.
• Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore – This picturesque Federally protected land is a favorite of many in the region. There are incredible 450 foot high bluffs and plenty of dunes to run around on and slide down.
• Torch Lake – You’d be forgiven for seeing photos here and thinking it’s the Caribbean thanks to the crystal clear shallow waters. There’s no real beach here though, you’ll want to enjoy the lake either by boat or swimming near the sandbar where the water is warmest.

Where to stay in Northern Lower Peninsula

Exactly where to stay depends on what you want to do, how far in advance you book and whether you prefer a hotel or a vacation rental (but note that many of these have a one week minimum in the busy summer season). Your drive time to Mackinaw City or St. Ignace will also depend on where you stay in this area.

• Holiday Inn Express & Suites Petoskey – While there’s no great view here, it’s conveniently located for access to the adorable towns of Petoskey, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs and more.
• Inn at Bay Harbor – The most luxurious property in the region, with an amazing lakeside location, spa, golf and more.
• Stafford’s Bay View Inn – Sweet b&b right on the lake filled with a combination of homey yet classy charm.
• Torch Lake vacation home – If you’re excited about the warm, turquoise waters of Torch Lake or Sleeping Bear Dunes, grab this vacation home that’s just a 5 minute walk from the shore! It’s also a quick drive to the town of Bellaire, which has plenty of shops and restaurants.

Restaurants around Northern Lower Peninsula

There are a million restaurants in the area to try, but my biggest tip would be to pick spots by the water for the evenings (and bring a sweater).

• Barrel Back Restaurant – Great views and good food on Walloon Lake. This is on the second floor, so if you can get a window table you’ll be warm while enjoying the scenery!
• Pier Restaurant – Dockside dining in Harbor Springs, with an emphasis on locally-caught fish and seafood.
• Symon’s General Store – Perfect lunch stop for custom deli sandwiches in Petoskey, either to eat at the picnic tables in the adjacent park or to take to nearby Petoskey State Beach.
• American Spoon – This Michigan fruit preserve company has stores located in many towns along the Michigan coast, but if you go to their Petoskey location (next to Symon’s) you can enjoy those preserves made into delicious gelato!

1 Day on Mackinac Island

Many Michiganders look to Mackinac Island (pronounced “Mackinaw”) as a way to step back in time. The island has been a sacred gathering space for the local Indigenous communities since long before French fur traders arrived in the 1600s. Without a bridge to connect Mackinac to the mainland ever , much of the island’s historic character has been maintained.

Access remains by boat and on-island transportation is restricted to horses, bikes, occasional mobility scooters for those with physical challenges, and personal snowmobiles in the winter. Even golf carts are (supposed to be) relegated to golf courses.

You’ll reach the island by ferry, and can take either Star Line or Shepler’s. I’ve heard recommendations for both and I really don’t think it matters which one you take, though Shepler’s is a little less expensive. Both companies offer departures from Mackinaw City (Lower Peninsula) and St. Ignace (Upper Peninsula) – if you get to the area early in the morning, you may opt for St. Ignace so that you’re crossing the Mackinac Bridge in low traffic.

You’ll save a few dollars by purchasing in advance online if you’re positive about your departure location, and if you’re visiting as a group or family look for the 3-4 packs of tickets for real savings. Shepler’s offers free day parking at both ports but you’ll have to pay for overnight parking with both companies at both locations.

Some visitors opt to bring their own bikes to Mackinac Island on the ferry, which is understandable because rentals are $50-60 for 4 hours! For most visitors just biking the loop with some stops (more info on that below) 2-3 hours should be sufficient. But if you’re bringing your own bike or trailer prepare to pay around $20 for its ferry ticket in addition to yours.

Since we had several weeks worth of gear in our van and only planned for one night on the island, we each brought a backpack for our overnight needs. The front desk of the Chippewa Hotel was kind enough to store them for us while we went biking.

Things to do on Mackinac Island

• Bike around Mackinac Island – There’s a perfect 8 mile loop around Mackinac Island that brings you to stunning rock formations, beautiful stone beaches, historic sites and more. It’s a can’t-miss activity if you’re physically able! We spent just over two hours looping the island, including leisurely stops in several places, trekking up the steep stairs to Arch Rock and getting ice cream at British Landing. There are several rental companies right at the dock when you get off the ferry and they’re all about the same. We found a wide selection of high-quality adult and kids bikes, plus trailers and tag-a-longs for younger kids (or less confident riders). Be sure to dip your toes in Lake Huron!
• Mackinac Island carriage tour – If you aren’t able to cycle or prefer not to, hop on a carriage operated by the world’s largest horse and buggy livery! The scenic carriage tours visit many of the island’s main attractions including Arch Rock, the Grand Hotel, the butterfly conservatory and Ford Mackinac. At the Fort this tour offers a “hop-on hop-off” option, which is the only way to visit For Mackinac without climbing a massive hill.
• Fort Mackinac – Perched high above the harbor, the 18th century Fort Mackinac still stands sentinel over the town below. It was constructed during the American Revolution and much of it remains largely as it was. There are plenty of fascinating things to do here in the span of an hour or two: attend one of many demonstrations throughout the day including cannon firing, check out the infrastructure that supported soldiers’ daily lives and even read the stories of officer’ families who were stationed there over time.
• Mackinac town historic sites – When you purchase a combo ticket for For Mackinac, you’ll also have access to several historic buildings in the town below. There are interesting for the stories they tell as well as demonstrations of life on the island during and shortly after the colonial period. We enjoyed both the blacksmith demonstration as well as the cooking demonstration.
• Butterfly House – We didn’t have time to visit either of the butterfly conservatories on Mackinac Island, but yes there are two! Based on recommendations I’ve received, I’d head to Butterfly House if time allows. It offers 1800 square feet of tropical gardens housing myriad butterflies and other interesting insects and is located just east of town – you’ll be only a block away as you head out to cycle around the island’s loop.

Where to stay on Mackinac Island

It can be tricky to find places to stay on Mackinac Island for just one night in the summer! Many properties have a two night minimum because it’s peak season and the island has strict zoning laws so you won’t find many true vacation rentals.

• Pontiac Lodge – If you plan to spend 2 nights on Mackinac Island, consider the much-loved Pontiac Lodge. It’s in the heart of town, walking distance to plenty of restaurants, shops and sites.
• Mission Point Resort – This b&b on the outskirts of town looks lovely and offers a variety of room sizes, and without the fanciness of The Grand Hotel. But it still doesn’t come cheap, so be sure to check prices before you commit.
• Sunset Condominiums – We stayed at this “condotel” right near Woods Restaurant and let’s say that it wasn’t our favorite place. Despite not being cheap (compared with non-Mackinac pricing) it really wasn’t great. No AC (or working bug screens), paper thin walls, very tired furnishings… but the upside is that it was one of the only places on the island I could book for one night, even eight months in advance.

Restaurants on Mackinac Island

You’re unlikely to find much “budget” dining (or anything else) on Mackinac due to both its popularity as a tourist destination as well as the expense and logistical challenges of island life.

• The Pink Pony – This 75 year old restaurant is so iconic that it’s basically the first thing you’ll see as you pull into the harbor, with the pink umbrellas fronting the Chippewa Hotel coming into view. It offers solid food and refreshing drinks. It also offers long lines (particularly when there’s a yacht race coming on to the island) so you might consider putting your name down as soon as you arrive on Mackinac and then going to do something else – we went for a bike ride around the island after storing our larger backpack with the helpful front desk at the hotel. Don’t miss the gift shop and free fudge samples as well!
• Woods Restaurant – This lodge-like outpost of The Grand Hotel sits on the far side of the island near Sunset Rock. Attire is a little less formal than at the Hotel itself (since you’ll either be trekking on dirt roads or riding in a horse-drawn carriage to get there) but you’ll still find ladies in dresses and some men in summer suits. We dined on the patio, which is lovely and charming. The food at Woods Restaurant is good but not life-changing (which you might expect at the price point). I would say it’s a “go for the experience” type of restaurant. Apparently there’s a duck pin bowling inside to enjoy while you wait but our otherwise excellent server didn’t mention it to us or our kids. Speaking of kids, in addition to a children’s menu they can do a child portion of some main dishes if you arrive early enough. If you plan to dine at Woods Restaurant, be sure to call a few days in advance to reserve a table at your preferred time. We opted to eat on the early side and then enjoy the sunset afterward (though the typical Michigan cloud cover didn’t oblige).
• Doud’s Market – If you’re looking for a budget-friendly place to get food on Mackinac Island, Doud’s is a good choice. There’s an ample selection of snacks, breakfast and even pizza. If you visit their “Market & Deli” location near Shepler’s ferry they have sandwiches as well. We popped in and grabbed yogurt and muffins to eat while we waited for a morning ferry back to the mainland and it worked out perfectly.

1 Day in the Eastern Upper Peninsula

Once you cross the “mighty Mac” (aka Mackinac bridget), the largest single-span suspension in the western hemisphere, you’ll arrive in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Many people blast through this area and head straight to Munising, but I think it offers enough fun things to do that it’s worth staying the night.

Things to do in the eastern Upper Peninsula

• Tahquamenon Falls State Park – This is the star of the show! These are the biggest waterfalls in Michigan and some of the largest in the eastern half of North America (though we’ve seen some very impressive ones in Niagara Falls , Finger Lakes and Quebec in the last year as well). The Upper Falls can be viewed from an accessible viewing area above or from a viewing platform that’s down a length set of stairs – but worth the walk if you can do it. We spent most of our time at the Lower Falls and you probably will too! Put on your swimsuit or water-friendly clothes and shoes and prepare to get wet. Lower Tahquamenon Falls is a great place for sure-footed adventurers to feel the cascades up close. You can either rent a rowboat or take the boardwalk out to the island in the middle of the river, where you’ll find visitors of all ages splashing and having fun. Do be careful, as there are some slippery patches of stone. One of the first things you’ll probably notice is the color of the water: it’s a rich brown, earning the site the nickname “Rootbeer Falls”. Just know that the water at Tahquamenon Falls is clean enough to swim in! The color is caused by tannins from nearby tree bark leeching into the water.

• Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum – This fascinating, well-done museum shares the tragic histories of some of the thousands of ships that have met their end in this treacherous part of the Great Lakes region. The experience is equal parts memorial, story-telling and an opportunity to learn about marine archeology. You can easily spend several hours exploring the complex, which also includes the historic lightkeeper’s quarters which share the human side of the site. Allow 2-3 hours to explore the entire museum, including a video about the SS Edmund Fitzgerald.

• Whitefish Point – Right behind the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is the beautiful beach at Whitefish Point. It has a nice sandy stretch and then a rocky entry as is typical of Lake Superior beaches. This is the perfect place to practice your stone skipping! I recommend wearing a swimsuit or water-friendly clothing along with some sort of water-friendly footwear, as it’s a shame not to enjoy the relatively warm shallow water here.

• MI Dog – This awesome sled dog training facility is the perfect place to go if you’re on a Michigan road trip with kids! Owner Laura Neese is a long-distance musher and she opens her kennel up to visitors in the summer. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about dog sledding and the close relationship between a musher and her team, and also cuddle some adorable husky puppies! We visited another small kennel in Alaska with the kids and it turns out they even know each other. We had originally planned to visit a roadside animal attraction in Newberry, but read some upsetting information on how the animals are treated. If that’s on your radar, please be sure to research it thoroughly.

Where to stay in the eastern Upper Peninsula

I’ll be totally honest that we didn’t like where we stayed in Newberry, but everything in Paradise was booked eight months in advance or required a multi-night stay.

• Tahquamenon Suites Lodging – Simple but clean accommodations in an excellent location in Paradise! Just 15 minutes from both the falls and Whitefish Point. This hotel does have a two night minimum, so it’s only an option if you’re planning a slower pace in this area.
• Americas Best Value Inn Tahquamenon Country – If you’re just staying one night in the eastern UP, congrats… this is where you’ll be staying unless you decide to camp. It was “fine” but not a place we would have voluntarily stayed for a second night.

3 Days in Munising

Munising is one of the major highlights of the Upper Peninsula. There are so many things to do in Munising itself and in the surrounding area that you could easily extend your visit here to a fourth day.

We spent our arrival day and all of the following day exploring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the next day in and around Manistique and then visited the sites in and around Marquette en route to our next stop. That UP itinerary worked very well!

Things to do in Munising

• Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – These iconic rainbow-hued sandstone cliffs are the biggest draw to Munising and should be at the top of your Upper Peninsula bucket list!
• Sand Point beach – Sand Point offers warm water and beautiful sunsets, plus a convenient location close to town.
• Pictured Rocks boat tour – To get a close up look at the cliffs, take a trip with Pictured Rocks Cruises . If the weather looks good, I recommend taking the last classic cruise that’s before the sunset cruise for brilliant colors and views in both directions.
• Kitch-iti-kipi – The “big cold spring” at Palms Book State Park is stunning! As you go across on a rope-propelled raft, you’ll see fish and wreckage below all the way to its 40ft depth. Plan to leave Munising first thing in the morning, as the drive is just under an hour and lines get long after lunch.
• Manistique – This cute town near Kitch-iti-kipi offers a warm, calm Lake Michigan beach at ThompsonRogers Roadside Park. You can visit the lighthouse in town as well.
• Lakenenland – Awesome privately owned but publicly accessible sculpture garden. Artist Tom Lakenen transforms scrap material into large-scale, interactive art. Wear your good walking shoes because you’ll be getting a lot of steps in!
• Marquette – For a totally different vibe, head to this quirky college town for lunch and a stroll on your way to Houghton. It’s also home to the iconic red Marquette Harbor Lighthouse.
• Sugarloaf Mountain – One of the best hikes in the Upper Peninsula. It’s about a 1.5 mile loop, but covers around 1,000 feet of elevation (some of that is on graded trail and some is on stairs). I’d rate it “moderate” and family-friendly. The views from the top are simply stunning!

Where to stay in Munising

• Holiday Inn Express Munising – Lakeview – We stayed here and it was excellent! If you book a balcony room (as we did) you can actually see Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore from you room. There’s a huge indoor pool, a lovely patio looking out to Lake Superior and rooms for up to six people!
• Roam Inn – If you’d rather stay in town, consider Roam Inn. It’s upstairs from the excellent Tracey’s restaurant, which is the perfect place to enjoy a high-end dinner while admiring the colorful sky over Lake Superior. Roam Inn offers rooms for two or four people.

Restaurants near Munising

• Tracey’s – As I mentioned above, this is the place to be for fine dining in Munising. Be sure to reserve a patio table shortly before sunset and grab a cocktail while you wait for your dinner to arrive.
• Pictured Rocks Pizza – Grab a top-quality pie to go and enjoy it as the sun goes down at nearby Sand Point beach. If it’s already dark, you can take advantage of their large turf patio to hang out on a summer evening over pizza and a soda.
• Frosty Treats – Fantastic sundaes in the heart of Marquette!
• Clyde’s Drive In – Burger lovers will have a great time at the Manistique outpost of this UP favorite. The food is delicious, fresh and affordable. There’s even a “Jr. Burger” for those with a smaller appetite, which ran us $3.45 in 2023.

2 Days in Houghton

Houghton is as far north as you’ll stay on this Upper Peninsula Michigan road trip, and it’s so far north that my cell phone welcomed me to Canada while we explored the Keweenaw Peninsula!

If you’re able to add an extra day to your Michigan summer itinerary, consider doing it here and taking a day trip to Isle Royale National Park – you can go by seaplane directly from Houghton or by ferry from Copper Harbor (there’s also a ferry from Houghton but it’s far too long to be practical for a day trip).

Things to do in Houghton

• Quincy Mine tour – This is an excellent tour of a massive copper mine complex, but it also gives you a fascinating look at the Keweenaw Peninsula’s rise and fall over the 20th century. This site is part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park, and you’ll see the impressive above-ground facilities in addition to taking a lengthy walk in the mine. Best for kids 8+.
• Adventure Mining Company – This is another option for a mine tour near Houghton Michigan, but with optional “thrill” experiences for teens and adults.
• Chutes and Ladders playground – Massive climbing and slides playground along the waterfront in downtown Houghton.
• Brockway Mountain Drive – This scenic road between Silver River Falls and the village of Copper Harbor offers great scenic lookouts that don’t require any hiking. Just keep your eyes peeled for the very obvious places to stop.
• Agate Beach – This pretty spot just west of Copper Harbor is the perfect place to go hunting for agates and other beautiful rocks.
• Astor Shipwreck Park – This lovely beach park is just outside the bounds of Fort Wilkins Historic State Park. It’s an awesome place to relax and enjoy views of the Copper Harbor lighthouse as you wrap up your epic Michigan roadtrip!

Of course there are also tons of hiking trails in the area if you’re looking for active exploration!

What to Pack for a Michigan Road Trip

There are a few things you’ll definitely want to pack for a summer road trip in Michigan. We brought these and found them very helpful!

• A paper map  – Some of these areas, particularly Upper Peninsula, don’t have great phone service. I suggest downloading maps to use offline in the Google Maps app, but also bringing  this paper map  as backup.
• A cooler  – This route covers about 1,000 miles so there are plenty of days when you’ll wind up driving around mealtime! We were really happy to have  this adorable (and effective) cooler  and  these serious ice packs  (2 of the XL size) with us for picnic lunches, quick hotel breakfasts and snack breaks. Everything stayed cold when we needed it to and the cooler has enough organization to consolidate paper plates, utensils, paper towels and even a bottle opener. We also brought collapsible silicone containers , which were helpful for snacks, blueberry picking and even sandwiches.
• Summer clothing (mostly)  – We were able to get away with almost exclusively summer clothes. In addition, we each brought one pair of jeans, one pair of hiking pants, a long sleeve t-shirt and a fleece or sweatshirt. Thankfully it’s a pretty easy trip to pack light for.
• Water-friendly shoes – While I’m personally not a fan of Keens, something along those lines is ideal footwear for a summer trip to Michigan. Once you leave the lower peninsula, most of the beaches have rocky entries and you’ll really appreciate having something protecting your feet. If you like Keens, you may be able to use them as your only footwear!
• Bug repellant – We had fewer bug challenges than we feared, but in general you’ll find plenty of mosquitos in northern Michigan. Bring insect repellant wipes for easy application when you know you’ll be outside for a long time.
• National Parks passport – The perfect way to remember your Michigan road trip is by getting stamps in your National Parks passport ! Opportunities include Pictured Rocks, Sleep Bear Dunes, Isle Royale, Keweenaw NHP and more. Just bring your passport inside any visitors center and use the provided stamps.

In addition to your itinerary, Wonderplan also shows essential information about the country you're visiting. These include the currency conversion rate, electricity plug type, languages spoken, weather, and popular conveyances.

3. PLAN by ixigo

PLAN by ixigo starts by asking you about your dream destination. Then, it provides an option to describe the type of experience you want to have. This is just like a ChatGPT prompt, so you can enter anything you wish.

For example, you can specify the duration of your stay, your interests, the kinds of activities you're looking for, whether you have a family with you, and so on.

But if you can't think of any prompts, PLAN by ixigo provides a few trip ideas, so you can always select those. PLAN by ixigo then shows a day-wise plan, showing what you can do in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

However, if the suggested itinerary doesn't sound appealing, you can again enter a prompt to edit it.

4. iplan.ai

While iplan.ai doesn't mention which AI or machine-learning algorithm it uses, the results are fantastic enough to gloss over that. The app works beautifully on phones to give you a full itinerary for any one city at a time, depending on how many days you have there.

The app first asks you to name the destination city. As far as we checked, iplan.ai works best for popular tourist cities, not offbeat or obscure travel. Next, note how many days you will be there, and then choose your free time each day—a cool step to ensure a better itinerary if you already have some plans, but not a whole days worth.

Tell iplan.ai if you're traveling solo, as a couple, with family, or with friends, and then choose your interest among topics like history, art and culture, nature, entertainment, shopping, food, sports, relaxing, etc. Finally, choose between an economy, normal, or luxury budget.

After a few minutes, iplan.ai gives you a day-wise itinerary for your trip. It's plotted on a map so you can see all the locations, and each point of interest has a brief description along with estimated travel time.

The app has both free and paid plans. With a paid account, you can share the trip plan with your friends and access it offline. Another limitation of iplan.ai is that you can't get an itinerary for a multi-city trip. For now, you'll need to make a plan for each city you're visiting, one at a time.

Having taken hints and tips from forumites, my road trip has expanded from 2 weeks 🤣 to 5 weeks.

Days chilling are necessary as we’re not spring chickens anymore.

Over night after flights from UK at Coral sea hotel Cairns

Collect motorhome and travel to Port Douglas via Smithfield Coles for provisions.

5 nights Tropic Breeze Caravan Park for jet lag recovery, Low Isles tour GBR, Kuranda. Mossman Gorge on route to Daintree.

All days flexible then from Daintree to Noosa River.

Daintree Riverview caravan park, Birding/wildlife tour booked with Daintree boatman 15 October

Atherton Tablelands, for Waterfalls, Ravenshoe, granite gorge creek rock wallabies, Hasties swamp bird hide, caravan park overnight

tarzali platypus park, Yungaburra, lake Eacham bird walk circuit and paronella park.

Mission Beach or Etty Bay, for cassowary spotting and chilling.

Townsville Rowes Bay caravan park via TYTO wetlands for Aquascene Magnetic Island , Magnetic Island, Billabong Sanctuary and chilling.

Phil’s, I have done outer reef and low isles. I’m not a strong swimmer - I prefer to snorkel with a pool noodle or a life jacket on, both which offer you extra buoyancy. I believe the outer reef boats will provide pool noodles - particularly the ones that go to pontoons. I would strongly recommend outer reef over Low Isles, as the coral at LI was basically dead - brown and covered in slime, with barely any fish life. We enjoyed the day out for the food, the boat ride itself and particularly the guided island walk, but we only chose this because we had our disabled young son with us - if I was doing it again, even with my son, I would do Wavelength instead.

Magnetic Island is so worth more than a day. We spent a week last year after spending a day the year before. We did the Forts Walk both times-bring water. So many great seaside restaurants in Horseshoe bay-

Aquacene is one of the best tours we’ve done anywhere . Highest recommendation, but the visibility for snorkeling is just meh.

Even if you aren’t great snorkelers, I’d bag the low isles for the ABC tour. 1 guide to 6 people, even with a noodle you’ll see more than the Low Isles because of the superior visibility. And the coral and giant clams are incredible, not to mention the variety of sea creatures. There were mostly novices on both our trips(1 year apart) and most of the people were our age or older(62). And if you’re doing lady musgrave first, you’ll be disappointed w the Low Isles anyway.

We saw a cassowary on the Jindalba Boardwalk in the Daintree-way too close!

We saw platypus in the wild in Yungsburra -not on the viewing platform but about 30 meters west under the bridge there’s a nice path by the river that’s definitely overlooked. We also saw one swimming in the rock pool at Babinda Boulders, which I hope you are including. The bakery in town is to die for!
