We all love fabric. We love any excuse to buy fabric. But, the most fun is when we get to travel AND buy fabric! That’s where the infamous Quilt Shop Hops come in. I’ll show you the 3 main things you need to do to plan the perfect shop hop road trip!

What is a Shop Hop?

Quite simply, a Shop Hop is when quilters visit multiple quilt shops in a single trip, or over the course of a few days. Basically, there are two different types of Shop Hops.

The first is the organized Shop Hops. These are when a group of specific Quilt Shops get together and create a passport system to help encourage quilters to visit their shops. Usually, you’ll purchase the passport for a few dollars at one of the participating quilt shops.

Each quilt shop on the list you visit will stamp your passport. Some may even give you a free gift! Then, when you have all your stamps collected, you’ll turn in your passport to be entered into a drawing for big prizes. I’ve seen everything from fabric giveaways to kits to even a sewing machine!

The second type of Shop Hop is one that you plan yourself. This is where I come in. Currently, I’m working on a BIG shop hop for my upcoming book. For this shop hop I’ll be visiting 19 different shops over the course of 2 weeks. Obviously, you don’t have to make such a big trip. Your shop hop may just be 4 or 5 shops in a weekend. Either way, here’s 3 main things to keep in mind when planning your Shop Hop.

1) Where am I Going?

The best way to begin planning a Shop Hop is to first figure out which shops you want to visit.

Click HERE for complete lists of quilt shops by State (US).

Once I have my list of the shops I want to visit, I’ll plug them into my map on the Furkot website to find my ultimate driving route. After trying a few different websites, I fell in love with Furkot because it’s fairly easy to use and, once you add each address on your itinerary, it will automatically plan the easiest route, break down driving times, give you suggestions on where to stop for the night, and much, much more!

Get a FREE Mini Quilt Shop Hop Planner!

2) how long will i be on the road.

Realistically, you can expect to visit 2 – 3 quilt shops per day depending on how far apart they’re located and how long you stay. In my experience, our shop hop travel groups of 4 – 6 people usually spend an average of 1 hour at each quilt shop.

You’ll also want to plan a stop for lunch. I like to plan 1 hour for lunch if we’ve packed lunch with us. Or, I’ll plan 1 ½ – 2 hours for lunch if we’re stopping at a restaurant.

Pro Tip : Another bonus of the Furkot app is it will suggest restaurants for you!

Taking all of this into consideration, you can use the Furkot map to calculate the time distance between each shop including your starting point and stopping point. Then, add in your time at each shop and voila! You have your day scheduled.

Ok. That may sound like a bit much. Don’t worry, I’m a visual person too. So, here’s what it looks like:

  • Starting point (my home) to first quilt shop: 45 minutes.                (8:30 – 9:15 AM)
  • 1 hour at first quilt shop                                                                          (9:15 – 10:15 AM)
  • Quilt shop #1 to Quilt shop #2: 90 minutes.                                        (10:15 – 11:45 AM)
  • 1 hour for lunch                                                                                        (11:45 – 12:45 PM)
  • 1 hour at Quilt shop #2                                                                            (12:45 – 1:45 PM)
  • Quilt shop #2 to Quilt shop #3: 20 minutes.                                        (1:45 – 2:05 PM)
  • 1 hour at Quilt shop #3                                                                            (2:05 – 3:05 PM)
  • Quilt shop #3 to stopping point (my home): 90 minutes                 (3:05 – 4:35 PM)

Obviously, there’s going to be some give and take in time when you’re out on the road. Some quilt shops will require 2 hours and some may only require 30 minutes. That’s all part of the fun! But, this itinerary gives you a basic overview of what the day will most likely look like.

3) How Much is This Going to Cost?

road trip quilt shop

The best way I’ve found for making sure I have enough money for the trip (and I don’t overspend too much) is to have a budget. I know, no one really likes that word when we’re talking about fun, however the better we plan, the more relaxed the trip. Here’s a few things to work in the budget.

I like to formulate a rough estimate of how much gas will cost with this equation:

Total miles divided by my car’s miles per gallon. This will give me the number of gallons I’ll need. Then, multiply the number of gallons by the current gas rate.

road trip quilt shop

This will depend on whether you are bringing your own food from home or planning to eat out. If I’m eating out, I like to plan for $30 per day.

For overnight trips be sure to add in the price of your hotel plus any approximate taxes and fees.

I like to budget an average amount that I’m allowed to spend at each quilt shop. My usual amount is $25 each. Some shops you may spend a little more. Some shops you may spend a little less. However, when I have a limit, I tend to be a little more picky on what is and isn’t a “must have”. After all, those pretties are just so tempting!

For our one day Shop Hop example, here’s what our budget will look like:

  • Gas        $12
  • Food      $30
  • No Hotel Stay
  • Fabric    $75

Total budget: $117.

A good idea here is to also round up. That way there’s a little extra wiggle room should you need just one more fat quarter. $125 should do the trick.

Time to Hit the Road

No matter whether your shop hop is one day or 2 weeks, the better we plan, the smoother the trip and the more focus we can give to just having fun! And meeting amazing fellow quilters. And buying cool new gadgets. And buying more fabric!

I can’t believe I just found your site! By friend and I have quilt traveled for years. Last July we planned a trip around the sisters Oregon quilt show. We shopped 47 stores in 12 days!! Idaho, Oregon, and Washington!! It was a wonderful, whirlwind of fabric fun!! I’m trying to decide where to go next! We went to every fabric store in Utah for 2020. Little trips throughout the year! (Since Sisters got cancelled). And we’ve done Idaho! I’m thinking Colorado or Arizona! And I can’t wait to get to some European fabric stores!!

How fun!! I would recommend doing Arizona in the winter/early spring months and Colorado in the summer/fall months. If you make it to Tombstone, AZ, I highly suggest a stop in to Big Nose Kate’s restaurant. They have the BEST apple cobbler!! 😀

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

BY THE YARD: PLANNING THE PERFECT FABRIC ROAD TRIP

Posted by Jen Lopez on Aug 21st 2019

road trip quilt shop

Everyone loves a good road trip. Add fabric acquisition to the agenda and now you’ve really got my attention! You can make sure your personal quilt shop hop is a success by following a few simple rules of the road:

  • Plan First – You can easily plan out your route and all the shops you’d like to hit with any of the quilt shop guides that are available either in print or online. With the help of these guides, you could simply throw a dart at a map of the United States and find a slew of quilt shops near or on the way to that location.
  • Budget – Decide how much money you have allocated to spend in total (after gas and snacks, of course!) and how much that divides into per shop that you plan to visit. As easy as it may be to do, you don’t want to spend all your money on the first stop!
  • Shop Local – There are many fabric lines that are available nationwide at just about every quilt shop. Skip those - you can buy that stuff at home. Try to find fabric designs that are particular to whatever region you are visiting. For example, visiting the Great Lakes? How about fabrics featuring pine trees and bears? Heading up to Maine? You’re sure to find your pick of blueberries and lighthouses. While you are shopping local, you can always find new and interesting patterns by local designers and they will appreciate your business!
  • Your Travel Companion – If you are traveling with folks from your guild, you can skip this step. But if you are road tripping with your long-suffering spouse or partner, be sure to think of them, too. Incorporate some stops on your trip to places they would love to see. In my case, I always make sure Train Guy gets to see a Railroad Museum or take a ride on one of those old timey steam trains. It’s fun and scenic, and those adjuncts have even inspired a quilt or two!

With the beautiful fall weather right around the corner, start planning your fabric road trip today!

Plan your next Shop Hop!

Next week, I am taking a road trip with my quilting friends.  The quilt shops in our area are hosting a Shop Hop, an event that is common all across the country.  Since I am on a strict budget, I need to plan for a shop hop!

stock image of a car loaded with fabric

What is a Shop Hop?

Plan for a shop hop.

As much fun as a full day of quilt store shopping sounds, it can be depressing when you are on a limited budget.  I want to support small business and independent store owners, so I always try to make a purchase at every stop.  Knowing that I have to make smart purchases I created this plan for a shop hop.

Tip # 1 – Think about your future projects

Are you starting a new quilt?  Is your UFO pile growing because you need borders or backing fabric?

Start your shopping list with fabric.  Be sure to include specific colors, sizes and those special designers and fabric collections that you have been drooling over in your Instagram feed!

If you are a scrappy quilter and have a sufficient stash, think about supplementing with colorful pre-cuts.  One of my local stores has a scrap bin near the register and I always find delightful fabrics in fabulous color combinations.

Tip #2 – Inventory the basics

Take a look at your notions.  Thread is a necessity, so put those basic colors on your shopping list.  I generally piece with a beige or grey but you may need bright colors for an upcoming project.  Are you working with bent pins? Treat yourself to a new box of straight pins.  Having fresh, sharp tools makes preparing your quilt pieces so much easier.  Stock up on new rotary cutter blades now!  Don’t overlook your sewing machine – grab some needles while you are in the notions aisle.

Tip #3 – Shop for Gifts and Souvenirs

A shop hop is the perfect time to grab some gifts for your crafty friends.  Many shops have items such as notepads, pincushions, bobbin holders and scissor fobs that make lovely and useful gifts for fellow quilters and sewists.

If you are far from home and want a souvenir, look for local patterns and fabric.  The recent Row-by-Row Experience with the coordinating fabric license plates are fun to collect.  Books make wonderful gifts so make a list of titles for yourself or others.  The coloring craze is in full swing and designers are on board with coloring books featuring quilting designs and full quilt layouts.

So, are you ready to plan a shop hop with your quilting friends?  Be sure to download the planning guide and make notes about the fabric, books, notions and gifts you are interested in.  Drive safely and have fun shop-hopping! I’d love to hear about your crafty road trips so please tell me about your adventures.

Quilting Road Trip: Most Unusual Stores

Contessa's note: You can use the Quilters Trip Planner on Quilting Hub to look for shops, guilds, museums, etc.

Quilting Road Trip: Most Unusual Stores

The Davis Mountains of Texas are known for the Observatory with its star parties and for Fort Davis where the Buffalo Soldiers were stationed after the Civil War. Touring Fort Davis while the grandchildren did their Junior Ranger program showed this quilter some awesome antique sewing machines and quilts. One porch demonstration got me interested in rag rugs. There are many methods to make a rag rug from quilt strips today, but in those days, there were few. The docent was demonstrating tearing the strips and using an old fashioned toothbrush to make the rug.

We asked about quilt shops in the area, and she sent us to the local hardware store. Now, I love hardware stores – I can always find some kitchen gadget or other that I just must have. But fabric? The owner of the hardware store explained to us that some of the local ladies had asked him to at least stock basics like thread, needles, and fat quarters. So he did!

Fort Davis

This was not the only place in the US where we found and purchased fabric at the local hardware store. We were in Paducah, KY for Quilt Week, but arrived a few days early so we stopped at the local Chamber of Commerce for maps. The lady on duty loved Quilt Week and asked if she could help us plan our week. She showed us locations outside of Paducah where other quilt shows were taking place around the week, but not necessarily on the exact dates of the show. We were on board with that and hopped in the car and headed for Crittenden County and the town of Marion. We stopped at many Amish shops, purchased some homemade fried pie, and saw so many quilts. One small show inside a church was our favorite.

ky-church

Just down the road was a hardware store with an awesome selection of fabric. We purchased some camper fabric because my quilting hubby was in love!

In Charlton, Massachusetts is a quilt shop with a fascinating history. It is located in the former Methodist Church, but still has the pipe organ.

Charlton

The church moved to a new building in 2004 when it outgrew the Stafford Street building. Cathy, the shop owner, uses the basement for classes and machine repair. The former sanctuary houses the fabric, and a corner closet is the "Bat Cave."

bat-cave

The most delightful part of the visit was when Cathy sat down at the pipe organ and played hymns for us while we shopped!

I would love to see your most unusual stores. Please comment!

Blooming Poppies Modern Quilts

Item added to your cart

Planning a new modern quilt- road trip redux.

Do you like to use the same quilt pattern for multiple quilts?  I sure do.  It's one of the great things about a quilt pattern.  You purchase (or in my case, write) it once, and you have endless opportunities for new quilts for years to come.

For me, the time has come to create a new Road Trip Redux !  This pattern has a special place in my collection and on my creative journey.  It was just my second pattern, after the Road Trip Quilt Pattern , and the first one where I dove into the world of Adobe Illustrator to attempt to create some more refined graphics and diagrams.  I also worked closely with a great team of  pattern testers for the first time.  This helped me so much to create a rock solid pattern. I have been so pleasantly surprised and thrilled with how much good feedback I've received over the years from quilters who have enjoyed the pattern.

As we all know, there is a lot to be said for the positive feedback loop.  Having this positive experience with this first "legit" quilt pattern I wrote, made me so excited to try another.  Ten quilt patterns later, here I am, ready to circle back to this nearly first one.

Quilt Pattern Cover page

It was really the beginning of my path into writing quilt patterns, and having had very little idea what I was doing, I was so grateful to my testers and the amazing and supportive Instagram community that cheered me on during the making of my very first Road Trip Redux Quilt.

It's been almost three years since I began that first one and I've made 3 or 4 more in that time.  But it's been a while, and I love this quilt so much, so why not start another? I have some quilt gifts to consider after all and this one offers me two great size options to choose from.

If you've been following along with me for some time , you know my love of solids is strong.  So for this round, I'm considering trying something a little different and sprinkling in some gorgeous prints.  There are just so many beautiful and lively prints out there and right now I'm loving all the Art Gallery Fabric lines by their talented designers.  Have you seen the newest and soon to be released lines? Ugh, how does one choose?!

Anyway, I decided to put together a few mock ups to share.  Any favorites in the bunch? Check out my sampling of mostly print versions first, followed by the all solids versions.  I have a feeling I'll be making more than one more!

First Up- The Print Version Quilts

modern quilt with peach, gold and grey floral

Next Up- The Solids Quilts Shine Too

modern quilt with peach, teal and grey

As you can see, I'm kind of a fan of the peach and coral color family!

So, even though, mock ups like these aren't quite as fun as the real thing, they are great for allowing me (and you) to visualize the possibilities.  Of course these here are just a small handful of what's possible.  I hope it's given you some color inspiration for any upcoming projects and maybe even for your own Road Trip Redux Quilt!

Kate Colleran Designs

A Road Trip Quilt

A Block Of The Month Adventure Quilt, designed by Kate Colleran and Tammy Silvers of Tamarinis.

The pattern is available as a shipped paper pattern or a PDF download.

This quilt came from the idea of  a road trip across the United States and depicts different aspects of the country.

If you look closely at the quilt, you can almost see that it represents the United States, from shore to shore. There are trees, there are mountains, there are blocks to symbolize the ocean, the sun and the stars along with blocks that represent the various aspects of a road trip – roundabouts, mile markers and roadside blooms.

The pattern is set up as a block of the month with 11 block designs, and then the 12th month puts it all together.

The quilt is fat quarter friendly; you need 24 fat quarters and a background. You can use prints, use solids, use tone on tones or batiks- it will all work!
